a big chapter Welcome anD a fonD fareWell big changes are afoot as we prepare to welcome our new Director andy eagle, who takes up his post in June. andy has twenty years of experience working in professional and community arts in Wales for both not-forprofit and commercial organisations. in 1992 he started as head of marketing for swansea grand theatre followed by a period with the newly formed neath port talbot cbc unitary authority as head of cultural services. it was in this post that he opened pontardawe arts centre, established a community arts development project for the valleys communities of the authority, and brought catatonia to margam park for a 25,000 sell out concert. since 2000 he has been Director of theatr brycheiniog, brecon which he has established as a genuine community arts centre that presents and co-produces a diverse programme attracting audiences from all over mid Wales and beyond. The Chair of our Board John Matthews said: “While we bid a very fond farewell to Janek whose achievements over the last fifteen years have been immense, the board of chapter are delighted to welcome andy eagle as our new Director. With his vision and commitment, we look forward to the next exciting stages in chapter’s progress as a national and international leader in the arts.” Andy Eagle commented: “i am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead chapter into the next 40 years of its artistic adventures. chapter is a unique arts hub and a wonderful Welsh success story. i look forward to working with the chapter board, staff and stakeholders to ensure its bright future, and meeting the many varied audiences and artists, both established and emerging, that make chapter such a vibrant place. i currently live in brecon but will be relocating to cardiff when possible. as a cardiff blues fan, it is of great comfort that future home games will be just a short walk away.”

David mackintosh: the curtain Until Sunday 19 June • Tan Sul 19 Mehefin ”I like the idea of things concealed or hidden by a curtain or cover, and that the drawings in the show might reveal things.” if an artwork embodies thought, mackintosh presents thinking in visible form on a scale few of his contemporaries can equal. launched into the sight, minds and physical territory of the spectator is the fundamental, intuitive value of making a mark. sheets of paper advance diverse and sometimes indistinct images, repeatedly leaping out with a surprise that can bring a smile or an unexpectedly different reaction. lines tangle and shade; they shape, overlay and obscure; they are enlivened by the potential for movement if not made to move already by the artist through animation. the accident of a ‘drawn’ curtain in a drawing presents delicious linguistic possibilities. but, what penetrates the viewer’s sensibility most strongly about the curtain is the notion of suspension (another play on words?). What lies behind? What is being concealed? is this curtain the barrier that closes off or is it the background on which to project? the animation unexpectedly rationalises the experience of mackintosh’s exhibitions with its constantly shifting images in one concentrated place. the artist propels on to his viewer’s consciousness arbitrary chance encounters and the sensation of being buffeted by the unrelated-ness of numerous images. yet this discontinuity occurs alongside a musical accompaniment that can sound, by comparison, notably together, even in its sometimes-chaotic disharmony. lightbox commission melanie counsell Mon 20 June — Sun 11 Sept • Llun 20 Mehefin — Sul 11 Medi We’re delighted to announce that we have commissioned cardiff-born artist Melanie Counsell to create the latest work for the large-scale lightbox at the front of our building. melanie works across a variety of media, materials and processes — including 16mm film, sculpture, drawing and printmaking — and has built a considerable reputation for her economy of means and material sophistication. she has produced numerous criticallycelebrated installations with a site-generated focus that have expanded the given architectural framework to create new psychological environments by manipulating time, scale, architecture, light and object. melanie’s commission forms part of a group exhibition, curated by Simon Morrissey, that opens in the gallery in July. A Fire In His Master’s House Is Set will also include works by mark Dean, sarah Dobai, magnus Quaife, Daren newman and adam chodzko. see our next magazine for more information. Biography melanie counsell was born in 1964 and graduated from slade school of fine art in 1988. she lives and works in london. exhibitions and commissions include solo projects for artangel, london; galerie Jennifer flay, paris; matts gallery, london and Works|projects, bristol. in 2007 melanie was awarded the sargant fellowship at the british school at rome, and has undertaken major residencies at frac corsica (2008) and cove park, scotland (2009). her bookwork ‘annette’ and accompanying catalogue were published by artangel, london and matts gallery, london. melanie has works in private collections in UK, france and germany and works in major public collections including the fonds national d’art contemporain and frac des pays de la loire, france.

assembly: art in the bar annabelle shelton Fri 13 May — Sun 3 July • Gwe 13 Mai — Sul 3 Gorffennaf Annabelle Shelton draws influence from her social and geographical investigations of space and environment. she uses extensive photographic documentation, as well as memory, to create rich, detailed studies that are then re-presented using layers of watercolour and pencil. interested in the Japanese art of ‘Ukiyo-e’ (traditionally meaning ‘sad world’), annabelle takes the more recent translation ‘floating world’ as inspiration for her playful, dreamlike and sometimes surreal landscapes. she takes us on a personal journey, revealing elements of the familiar through her unique use of positive and negative space. annabelle is exhibiting a number of previous works alongside a new painting specially created for chapter. Mon 20 June • 9am-2pm Llun 20 Mehefin organised by cardiff School of Art and Design students and Subject leader in Sculpture, cecile Johnson Soliz, this seminar features an impressive list of speakers exploring the relevance, context and future of contemporary sculpture in the uK. Drawing on their extensive knowledge and understanding of making, exhibiting and thinking about sculpture, contributors will articulate how and why there are so many successes today within this rich and varied contemporary art form. In the afternoon, guest speakers will join cardiff’s emerging sculptors in the cardiff School of Art & Design Sculpture Department to hear how the next generation are making and thinking. Thu 23 — Sat 25 June • 8pm Iau 23 — Sad 25 Mehefin the latest in Peter Suart’s series of one man ‘eternity cabarets’ follows previous works which have explored ‘big topics’ like the holy grail, the holocaust, quantum mechanics and race relations. combining theatrical trickery, original music and storytelling, this new show looks at the hong Kong bubonic plague of 1894. While in hong Kong, Dr alexandre yersin from france and Kitasato shibasaburo from Japan both claimed precedence in identifying the plague bacillus, a discovery which subsequently changed the course of medical history. Peter Suart is a musician, performer and graphic artist who has released solo albums and worked with theatre artists and companies in hong Kong since the 1980s. he is the co-founder, with Kung chi shing, of the box, known since 1987 for its brilliant, one-off theatrical music concerts. presented in association with hong Kong arts centre.

re-live stories to leave Sat 18 June • 7.30pm • Sad 18 Mehefin following the success of last year’s A Story To Call My Own, Re-Live return for one night only with their latest offering, the culmination of a three month collaboration with the marie curie hospice in penarth. over the past four years Re-Live have been working creatively with older people and exploring the depth of the reflection process that, for many people, comes with getting older. “our work has shown us that older people look forward as well as back, and that the one inevitable truth facing us all is that someday our life will end.” this project explores how an awareness of the nearness of death affects the way we live in the here and now and the way we think about the past. Do we “rage against the dying of the light” or do we accept that all life must pass and that the future is unknown? What do we do with the days, hours or minutes we have left? how would we like to be remembered, and what are the memories that we most treasure, the stories we want to leave behind? Wales Dance platform llwyfan Dawns cymru Fri 1 — Sun 3 July • Gwe 1 — Sul 3 Gorffennaf a joint initiative led by national Dance company Wales with chapter and the Wales millennium centre, this first edition of a planned annual event invites contemporary dance-makers in Wales to present new, original works, from one minute to three days, across the spaces at chapter, Wmc, the Dancehouse and their environs. the full programme will be announced by mid-June and tickets can be bought from participating venues. the platform gives you the chance to experience tantalising works-in-progress, installations, ensemble performances, films and outdoor dances across the city from Wales’ pioneering and emerging dance makers.

For the first time ever, Médecins Sans Frontières gave a documentary crew uncensored access to its field operations. Set in war-torn Congo and post-conflict Liberia, this documentary interweaves the stories of four doctors as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions. Two volunteers are new recruits: a 26-year-old Australian doctor stranded in a remote bush clinic and an American surgeon from Tennessee trying to cope under the load of emergency cases in a shattered capital city. Two others are experienced field hands: a dynamic head of mission, valiantly trying to keep morale high and tensions under control, and an exhausted veteran, who has seen too much horror and wants out.

This beautifully animated film is a bittersweet account of author J. R. Ackerley’s 16-year relationship with his German shepherd dog. The distinguished man of letters hardly thought of himself as a dog lover until he came to adopt Tulip, who turned out to be the love of his life. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip’s sassy, erratic behaviour and Ackerley’s fumbling but determined efforts to ensure an existence of happiness for her. This is a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships.

this 1960 film began life as ‘battle of angels’, a neverproduced 1939 play by a young tennessee Williams. nearly 20 years later, Williams refined this rough-hewn theatrical effort into ‘orpheus Descending’, which enjoyed a respectable broadway run. the renamed film version stars marlon brando as Valentine ‘snakeskin’ Xavier, a troubleprone drifter who wanders into a deliciously Williamsesque mississippi town. here he becomes involved in the problems of alcoholic carole cutrere and unhappily married lady torrence and also runs afoul of torrence’s vicious husband. sexual symbolism abounds in this tempestuous drama, which features brando at his most inscrutable and magnani at her earthiest. maureen stapleton, in real life one of brando’s best friends and severest critics, plays an avant-garde artist.

one of the most well received films to grace our screens in recent times, marc evans’ latest is a beautiful meditation on culture, roots and identity, which interweaves two journeys. in the first, insecure, uptight rhys drags his girlfriend off to patagonia so he can photograph disused chapels in exotic locations, where she soon falls into the arms of their gorgeous gaucho guide (matthew rhys) — and who could blame her? meanwhile patagonian granny cerys fools her grandson alejandro into accompanying her to Wales to find the farmhouse her mum was forced to leave when pregnant. these meandering journeys are enlivened by evans’ fine eye for landscape, and his intelligent reflections on contemporary Wales and its place in the world.

Voiceovers from friends and family accompany grainy 1980s interviews and archive film of press stunts and his family at home in sao paulo, as senna matures from determined newcomer to world champion, and ultimately to sceptical, but resolute young veteran. the questionable circumstances of his death — in a car that was not safe enough to be on the road — add a universal theme, about how power and money lead to corruption, and can destroy when left unchecked.

It seems he’ll have to take the law into his own hands if he’s to survive…

Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre.
