When their Schutzstaffel parents are taken into Allied custody, five siblings are left to fend for themselves, with teenaged Lore taking charge of the journey to join their grandmother in Hamburg 500 miles away. The children encounter a populace suffering from postwar denial and deprivation, and for the first time are exposed to the reality and consequences of their parents’ actions. With food hard to come by, and the journey becoming ever more arduous, the family meets Thomas, a young Jewish survivor who helps them negotiate their way towards their final destination.

From L to R: To The Master, Burton: Y Gyfrinach?

chapter.org

The Master Sun 10 — Thu 14 March USA/2012/137mins/15. Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson. With Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Back by popular demand. In the years after WWII, an American intellectual creates a religion. When he meets a troubled drifter, he invites the man to help him spread the new faith. As their congregation increases, the drifter begins to question the religion he once accepted and the mentor who gave his life direction.

“The themes may be contentious, but the handling is perfect. If there were ever a movie to cause the lame to walk and the blind to see, The Master may just be it.” The Guardian

Burton: Y Gyfrinach? [The Secret] Fri 8 + Sat 9 March Wales/2011/76mins/12A/Welsh with English subtitles. Dir: Dylan Richards. With Richard Harrington, Dafydd Hywel.

A provocative drama that considers what might have occurred at a pivotal moment in the life of ‘60s superstar Richard Burton and his elder brother, Ifor Jenkins, in the aftermath of a Swiss funeral. For Burton it was the chance to re-connect with the revered father figure who had become estranged following his love affair with Clepatra co-star Elizabeth Taylor. For Jenkins it was a moment to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future. The awkward, booze-fuelled reunion was to climax in a shattering accident that left Ifor paralysed from the neck down. Richard Harrington and Dafydd Hywel soak the screen in Welsh melancholy and familial angst as a plausible cause for an incident that was to haunt Burton for the rest of his days unfolds. We will be joined by director Dylan Richards following the screening on Friday 8 March.

Robot and Frank Fri 15 — Thu 28 Mar USA/2012/89mins/12A. Dir: Jake Schreier. With Frank Langella, Liv Tyler, Peter Sarsgaard, Susan Sarandon.

Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank, a walking, talking, humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. + SciSCREEN returns with a post screening panel on Wed 20 Mar. Please reserve a free place through the Box Office. Tickets for the film must be purchased separately. www.cardiffsciscreen.blogspot.com

Wales One World Film Festival 2013 Fri 15 — Wed 20 Mar

WOW Film Festival returns with a wide range of films that transport you to places you rarely get a chance to see — the vast landscapes of Tibet, a remote hamlet in the far north of Greenland, and the extraordinary, Oscar nominated War Witch, about a child soldier in the Congo.

1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. Loach has created a rich political and social narrative using archive film of the period and contemporary interviews with those who remember those times, such as ex-Miner Ray Davies from Caerphilly and pioneering Valleys GP, Dr. Julian Tudor-Hart. Wed 6 March: Preview Screening followed by Q&A with Ken Loach in person accompanied by Ray Davies and Dr Julian Tudor-Hart. Sun 17 March: A nationwide satellite screening with a Q&A with Ken Loach.

Nostalgia for The Light Fri 15 March

Chile/ 2010/94mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Patricio Guzman. With: Gaspar Galaz, Lautaro Núñez, Violeta Berrios.

A moving meditation on time and place and the enduring importance of memory, courage and conscience. In the vast Atacama Desert, astronomers peer into the cosmos in search for answers about the origins of life. Nearby, a group of women search for the bodies of loved ones, dumped unceremoniously by Pinochet’s regime. A film of rare visual poetry that’s personal, political and philosophical.

“A film that makes you ponder the mysteries of human existence anew.” Total Film

Machuca Fri 15 March

Chile/Spain/France/UK/ 2004/118mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Andres Wood. With: Matias Quer, Ariel Mateluna, Manuela Martelli.

Chile. 1973. Set against the collapse of Allende’s government, quick-witted, slum-kid Pedro and shy, rich-kid Gonzalo forge an unlikely friendship. A delicate and accomplished coming-of-age tale, that is also an angry, idealistic farewell to an era brutally cut short before its time. Canada/2012/90mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Kim Nguyen. With: Rachel Mwanza, Alain Bastien.

This hugely appealing, heartfelt gem sees smart, strong-willed, tomboy Wadjda chafing at her restrictions as she stops at nothing to earn the money to buy a bike.

This beautiful, powerful fairytale about love follows Komona, a child soldier in the Congo, as she tells her extraordinary life story to her unborn child. A film with many facets, and an amazing performance from an amateur actress that is so moving and surprising that it is not easily forgotten.

At the centre of this beautiful, bewildering new film are Juan and Natalia, a bickering middle-class couple with two adorable toddlers (Reygadas’ own). Tender, touching ‘home movies’ of meal times and parties show the domestic nature of everyday life interspersed with dramatic scenes with local characters.

Alois Nebel Mon 18 March

Czech Republic/2012/80mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Tomas Lunak. With the voices of: Miroslav Krobot, Karel Roden.

Based on a cult graphic novel this is a superbly atmospheric portrait of a fractured loner and his country’s recent history. Haunted by the violent postwar expulsion of the Germans he witnessed as a child, Alois prefers old timetables to people, but when a mysterious mute man returns his world is turned upside down. Cloud Atlas Fri 22 — Thu 28 March

The Sun-Beaten Path Tue 19 + Wed 20 March

Tibet/2011/89mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Sonthar Gyal. With: Yeshe Lhadruk, Lo Kyi.

With vast, desolate landscapes this cinematic gem is an authentic portrait of contemporary Tibet. Walking home through barren mountains and dusty windswept plains, the troubled Nyma is joined by an old man who allows Nyma to gradually unburden himself.

Germany/2012/172mins/15. Dir: Tom Tykwer. With Tom Hanks, Halle Berry.

One of the most ambitious, expensive, critically discussed, dauntingly dense, mash-ups of formal literary ambition and cinematic pulp fiction in years. Independently produced, this reasonably faithful adaptation of David Mitchell’s sci-fi novel relates six stories taking place between the years 1849 and 2346. With wonderful performances from Tom Hanks, Jim Broadbent and Halle Berry anchoring the visual spectacle, this is an awe-inspiring journey not to be missed.

Mama Africa

Finland/2011/90mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Mika Kaurismaki. With: Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte.

The House Wed 20 March

Czech Republic/Slovakia/2011/97mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Zuzana Liová. With: Miroslav Krobot, Lucia Jaskova.

A beautifully performed tale of life in small town Slovakia, the struggle to make ends meet, and the gulf between traditional parents and their kids who have quite different aspirations. This minor gem is the kind of emotionally rewarding, real flavour-of-life drama at which ‘Czech’ cinema so often excels.

Fri 22 — Thu 28 March Japan/2011/128mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Hirokazu Koreeda. With: Ohshiro Maeda.

Two young brothers find themselves divided by their parents’ separation, attending different schools and living at opposite ends of one of Japan’s largest landmasses. Keen to reunite, and in doing so repair the rift between their parents, the boys cook up an almost mystical solution. A touching, warm and realistic portrait of family life in contemporary Japan, Koreeda delivers an utterly engaging, emotionally complex portrait of parents, grandparents and teachers all seen through the prism of the pitch perfect young boys.

“One of the year’s best films.” The Guardian

Richard Bevan / Chess Club Sun 24 March Chess Club records a girl sitting at a chess board thinking, planning her next moves, a process that is described brilliantly by Walter Tevis in the novel. The audience are placed in opposition to this image of the young chess player, becoming a mirror, reflecting elements of her thought processes about the art work projected on the screen before them. For O:4W Chess Club has been blown up from its original 16mm film format to 35mm for projection in a cinema. The film will be projected for two hours, a duration that suggests both a feature film and of a game of chess. Song For Marion Fri 29 — Thu 4 April UK/2012/94mins/PG. Dir: Paul Andrew Williams. With: Terence Stamp, Christopher Eccleston.

Arthur is a grumpy old man incapable of any form of emotional expression to either his son or his terminally ill wife Marion, who, in stark contrast, embraces life as a member of a local choir. When Marion’s health takes a turn for the worse, Arthur is forced to confront his feelings. With terrific, natural performances from Stamp, Redgrave and Arterton this is a deeply moving tale of redemption.

Shell Fri 29 March — Thu 4 April UK/2012/90mins/15. Dir: Scott Graham. With: Chloe Pirrie, Joseph Mawle.

Shell runs an isolated petrol station with her father, Pete. Aside from the few regulars who utilise their outpost (including the excellent Michael Smiley), Shell and Pete have almost no contact with the outside world and as such are mutually dependent on one another for basic human needs; needs that become increasingly disturbing and seemingly inescapable. Graham and Cinematographer Yoliswa Gartig paint a haunting vision of life lived outside the boundaries of normal society that is given a vibrant beating heart by Chloe Pirrie in the title role.

Beyond The Hills Fri 29 Mar — Thu 4 April Romania/2012/150mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Cristian Mungiu. With: Cosmina Stratan, Cristina Flutur, Valeriu Andriuţă.
