Freya Dooley: The song settles inside of the body it borrows Until | Tan 26.05 Freya Dooley’s work combines literary and pop cultural references to create unstable semi-fictions and dense soundtracks. Often referring or returning to anxious states, her work attempts to articulate an inside turned out. The Host (2019), is a new multi-screen audio-visual work that takes Mark Twain’s 1876 short story ‘A Literary Nightmare’, as it’s departure point, in which the protagonist is tormented by an earworm jingle and only finds relief by passing this affliction on to an unwitting audience. Elaborating on the real and imagined experiences of a reluctant host to dreamlike states, stubborn parasites and repeated riffs, Dooley explores the effects of listening on our emotional and physical states. The exhibition also features the recent work Speakable Things (2018) that connects Greek mythology, pop music, opera, television and ‘guilty pleasure’ in a fragmented visual essay. Meandering between lip-syncs and landscapes, song and speech, melody and cacophony, the film’s lyrical narratives explore the loss, leakage and leverage of the voice. ‘The song settles inside of the body it borrows’ deviates from existing literary narratives to explore the potential and limitations of the voice, consumed bodies and occupied minds.
Alongside the exhibition is ‘Find joy in these scenes of fruitless labours’, Dooley’s new commission in the Caffi Bar that is produced in collaboration with Foundation Press, an experimental risograph press based in Sunderland.

About the artist Freya Dooley is an artist based in Cardiff. She works with writing, moving image, sound and performance and is interested in the voice as a conduit between sound and language, thought and body. Her exhibition ‘Somewhere in the crowd there’s you’ runs concurrently at Eastside Projects in Birmingham. Freya also shares a collaborative practice with artist Cinzia Mutigli, and their performance ‘Being Sharon’, about their lives intertwining with their favourite soap operas, was commissioned by Chapter for Experimentica in 2018. Dooley recently received a Jerwood Visual Arts bursary and was shortlisted for the Kleinwort Hambros Emerging Artist Prize (2019). Other recent solo commissions include ‘Speakable Things’, Oriel Davies, Powys (2018); and ‘Rhythms and Disturbances’, g39, Cardiff (2016). This exhibition is supported by Arts Council of Wales.

Mae gwaith Freya Dooley yn cyfuno cyfeiriadau diwylliannol pop a llenyddol i greu darnau ansefydlog rhannol ffuglennol a thraciau sain dwys. Gan gyfeirio neu ddychwelyd yn aml at gyflyrau o bryder, mae ei gwaith yn ceisio cyfleu’r tu mewn wedi’i droi am allan. Mae The Host (2019), gwaith newydd sain-weledol aml-sgrîn, yn defnyddio stori fer Mark Twain o 1876, ‘A Literary Nightmare’, fel man cychwyn, lle mae’r prif gymeriad yn cael ei boenydio gan dincial parhaus, a’r unig beth sy’n ei ryddhau o’r sŵn yw trosglwyddo’r cystudd i gynulleidfa ddiarwybod. Gan ehangu ar brofiadau gwirioneddol a dychmygol gwesteiwr amharod o gyflyrau breuddwydiol, parasitiaid styfnig a riffiau ailadroddus, mae Freya’n archwilio sut mae gwrando yn effeithio ar ein cyflwr emosiynol a chorfforol. Mae’r arddangosfa hefyd yn cynnwys y gwaith diweddar, Speakable Things (2018), sy’n cysylltu mytholeg Roegaidd, cerddoriaeth bop, opera, teledu a ‘phleserau euog’ mewn traethawd gweledol tameidiog. Gan grwydro rhwng cydwefuso a thirluniau, cân a lleferydd, alaw ac amherseinedd, mae naratifau telynegol y ffilm yn archwilio colled, gollyngiad a dylanwad y llais. Mae The song settles inside of the body it borrows yn gwyro oddi wrth y naratifau llenyddol presennol i archwilio potensial a chyfyngiadau’r llais, cyrff defnyddedig a meddyliau wedi’u meddiannu. Yn cyd-fynd â’r arddangosfa bydd ‘Find joy in these scenes of fruitless labours’, gwaith comisiwn newydd
Freya yn y Caffi Bar sydd wedi’i gynhyrchu ar y cyd â Foundation Press, gwasg risograff arbrofol wedi’i lleoli yn Sunderland. Ynglŷn â’r artist Artist sy’n byw yng Nghaerdydd yw Freya Dooley. Mae’n gweithio gyda thestun, darluniau sy’n symud, sain a pherfformiad, ac mae ganddi ddiddordeb yn y llais fel cyswllt rhwng sain ac iaith, y meddwl a’r corff. Mae ei harddangosfa ‘Somewhere in the crowd there’s you’ yn rhedeg ar yr un pryd ym Mhrosiectau Eastside, Birmingham. Mae Freya hefyd yn cydweithio gyda’r artist Cinzia Mutigli, ac yn 2018 fe gomisiynodd Chapter waith ganddi ar gyfer Experimentica, sef eu perfformiad ‘Being Sharon’, sy’n ymwneud â’u bywydau’n rhyngblethu gyda’u hoff operâu sebon. Cafodd Freya fwrsariaeth Celfyddydau Gweledol Jerwood yn ddiweddar, ac roedd hi ar y rhestr fer ar gyfer Gwobr Artist Newydd Kleinwort Hambros (2019). Mae ei gwaith comisiwn unigol diweddar yn cynnwys ‘Speakable Things’, Oriel Davies, Powys (2018); a ‘Rhythms and Disturbances’, g39, Caerdydd, (2016). Cefnogir yr arddangosfa gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.

But who would want to explore these bodies? Who will receive their stories? Their words have been buried in dust, through the long corridor of time. We unearth them here. We hear them echo in the darkness. This city will fall. Alfa, Beattie and Coral wait… wait while once more the action plays out elsewhere. Once more they form the chorus to someone else’s lead. But… this city will fall. With interwoven BSL, live audio description and English captions at every show, peeling will challenge audiences to experience theatre afresh. Whose stories do we tell? And who will be there to bear witness? Q&A following the matinee on 02.05 + 04.05 A Taking Flight Theatre Company co-production with The Riverfront and Chapter.
Yn y cysgodion, byth ganol llwyfan, mae tri pherfformiwr yn aros am eu moment fer yn y goleuni. Ond pwy fyddai eisiau archwilio’r cyrff hyn? Pwy fydd yn clywed eu straeon? Mae eu geiriau wedi’u claddu o dan lwch, drwy goridor hir amser. Rydyn ni’n eu datgelu yma. Rydyn ni’n eu clywed yn atseinio yn y tywyllwch. Bydd y ddinas hon yn cwympo. Mae Alfa, Beattie a Coral yn aros... yn aros wrth i’r cyffro, unwaith eto, ddigwydd yn rhywle arall. Unwaith eto, dim ond corws ydyn nhw yng nghyngerdd rhywun arall. Ond... bydd y ddinas hon yn cwympo. Gyda Iaith Arwyddion Prydain, disgrifiad sain byw a geirdeitlau Saesneg wedi’u rhyngblethu ym mhob sioe, bydd peeling yn herio’r gynulleidfa i brofi’r theatr o’r newydd. A MR AND MRS CLARK PRODUCTION CYNHYRCHIAD GAN MR AND MRS CLARK
Louder Is Not Always Clearer
08.05—11.05 7.30pm Jonny is a teacher, a workshop leader and an avid football fan. He’s just become a father. His friends say that he’s outgoing and that he loves music, festivals and nightclubs. Jonny is deaf. He was born deaf to hearing parents who were afraid that disability would stigmatise their son and the family. ‘Louder Is Not Always Clearer’ is an honest portrayal of the vulnerability of a deaf man, created and performed by a deaf man. For a hearing audience it is an illuminating and emotional experience. For deaf audience members the show is a familiar tale of misunderstanding and isolation. For all audiences it is a humorous and at times moving story of one man’s attempt to cope, to fit in and be accepted. Mae Jonny’n athro, yn arwain gweithdai ac yn gefnogwr brwd o bêl-droed. Mae newydd ddod yn dad. Mae ei ffrindiau’n dweud ei fod e’n gymeriad allblyg, a’i fod wrth ei fodd â cherddoriaeth, gwyliau a chlybiau nos. Mae Jonny’n fyddar. Cafodd ei eni’n fyddar i rieni oedd heb nam ar eu clyw, ac oedd yn ofni y byddai anabledd yn peri stigma i’w mab a’r teulu. Mae ‘Louder Is Not Always Clearer’ yn bortread gonest o fregusrwydd dyn byddar, wedi’i greu a’i berfformio gan ddyn byddar. I gynulleidfa sydd heb nam ar eu clyw, mae’n brofiad dadlennol ac emosiynol. I gynulleidfa fyddar, mae’r sioe’n adrodd stori gyfarwydd o gamddealltwriaeth ac unigedd. I bob cynulleidfa, mae’n adrodd stori ddoniol a theimladwy ar adegau am ymgais un dyn i ymdopi, i berthyn ac i gael ei dderbyn. £12/£10 BSL interpreted | Gyda dehongliad Iaith Arwyddion Prydain
