RACHEL MACLEAN: SPITE YOUR FACE Until / Tan: 20.01.19
Commissioned for the Venice Biennale in 2017, Rachel Maclean’s critically-acclaimed ‘Spite Your Face’ travels to Chapter to present her first solo exhibition in Wales. Referencing the Italian folk-tale The Adventures of Pinocchio, ‘Spite Your Face’ (2017) advances a powerful social critique, exploring underlying fears and desires that characterise the contemporary zeitgeist. Set across two worlds — with a glittering, materialistic and celebrity-obsessed upper world, and a dark, dank and impoverished lower world — the lure of wealth and adoration entices a destitute young boy into the shimmering riches of the kingdom above. Written in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, and during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the story is steeped in the political flux and uncertainty of our time. Shown as a perpetual 37-minute loop with no definitive beginning or end, ‘Spite Your Face’ raises issues including the abuse of patriarchal power, capitalist deception, exploitation and the destructive trappings of wealth and fame, all in Maclean’s typically direct and acerbic style. Following the monumental staging of the work for Scotland + Venice in the deconsecrated Chiesa di Santa Caterina in Venice, ‘Spite Your Face’ was reframed for the Georgian Gallery of Talbot Rice in Edinburgh before travelling to Cardiff where we will also present a new commission to accompany the exhibition. Maclean has created a large-scale artwork that will be sited on the lightbox, announcing the arrival of central character, Pic, to visitors and passers-by alike. A text by writer and curator Ellen Mara De Wachter has been commissioned to accompany the exhibition.
Cafodd ‘Spite Your Face’ ei gomisiynu ar gyfer Biennale Fenis yn 2017 cyn dod i Chapter, Caerdydd, yn rhan o arddangosfa unigol gyntaf Rachel Maclean yng Nghymru. Mae ‘Spite Your Face’ (2017), sy’n cyfeirio at stori werin Eidalaidd ‘Anturiaethau Pinocchio’ yn cynnig beirniadaeth gymdeithasol rymus ac yn ymchwilio i ofnau a dyheadau sylfaenol sydd yn nodweddu’r zeitgeist. Yn nau fyd y ffilm - byd uchel disglair a materol, ac is-fyd tywyll, diflas a thlawd - mae atyniad cyfoeth ac eilun-addoliad yn arwain bachgen ifanc tlawd o’r gwaelod i’r brig. Cafodd y gwaith ei ysgrifennu yn sgil penderfyniad y DG i adael yr Undeb Ewropeaidd, ac yn ystod ymgyrch arlywyddol Donald Trump, ac mae hi’n stori sydd wedi’i seilio ar lif gwleidyddol ac ansicrwydd ein cyfnod ni. Ar ffurf lŵp 37 munud o hyd heb ddechrau na diweddglo pendant, mae ‘Spite Your Face’ yn codi cwestiynau cymhleth – am gamdriniaeth grym patriarchaidd, twyll cyfalafol, ecsbloetio a dinistr cyfoeth – a’r cyfan yn arddull nodweddiadol uniongyrchol a miniog Maclean. Yn dilyn llwyfaniad mawreddog y gwaith yn arddangosfa Scotland + Venice yn eglwys ddatgysegredig y Chiesa di Santa Caterina yn Fenis, cafodd ‘Spite Your Face’ ei ail-ffilmio ar gyfer Oriel Sioraidd y Talbot Rice cyn teithio i Gaerdydd, lle byddwn hefyd yn cyflwyno gwaith comisiwn newydd gan Maclean. Aeth yr artist ati i greu gwaith celfyddydol ar raddfa fawr a gaiff ei leoli ar flwch golau Chapter. Bydd yn cyhoeddi dyfodiad cymeriad canolog y gwaith, Pic, i ymwelwyr â’r ganolfan a’n cymdogion. Comisiynwyd ysgrif gan yr awdur a’r curadur Ellen Mara De Wachter i gyd-fynd â’r arddangosfa.

ART IN THE BAR / CELFYDDYD YN Y BAR
Cornelia Baltes Until / Tan: 24.03.19
Cornelia Baltes’ brightly coloured paintings combine simplicity with humour and playfulness. Real-world observations are stripped back to their simplest form; creating new abstract patterns and rhythms. Their bold graphic qualities often spill out over the surface and on to the walls and surrounding architecture in which they inhabit. For Chapter, Baltes has created a new site-specific work in the bustling Caffi Bar — two giant cartoon hands dangle down from the glass skylights above, their fingers stretching towards the floor whilst another hand protrudes around the smaller wall, claiming the space as their own.
Mae paentiadau lliwgar Cornelia Baltes yn cyfuno symlrwydd â hiwmor ac elfennau chwareus. Mae sylwadau ar y byd go iawn yn cael eu lleihau i’w ffurfiau symlaf ac mae hynny’n creu patrymau a rhythmau haniaethol newydd; mae eu nodweddion graffigol hy yn aml yn gorlifo dros y waliau a’r bensaernïaeth amgylchynol. Ar ran Chapter, aeth Baltes ati i greu gwaith newydd safle-benodol yn y Caffi Bar - dwy law fawr, mewn arddull cartŵn, sy’n hongian o’r ffenestri gwydr yn y to, eu bysedd yn estyn tua’r llawr, wrth i law arall estyn o gwmpas y wal lai, fel petai i feddiannu’r gofod.

Rowley and Morgan have been making experimental work together, and with others (Brith Gof, Forced Entertainment, Pearson/Brookes, National Theatre Wales) since 1990. Much of that work exists only in traces and memories. In 2008 they made Phantom Ride, a performance based on traces of the lost works of pioneering south Wales based film-maker William Hagger. In 2017, with choreographer and performance writer Wendy Houstoun, they began to examine contemporary re-presentation of their own lost works. In 2018 Phantom Rides Again delves deeper into the telling and retelling of stories, languages, reliability and credibility...fake news.
“Phantom Ride elevates the art of the unreliable narrator to a new level. It’s very unreliability is unreliable. clever, funny and filled with deadpan charm” Andrzej Lukowski, Metro 2008 Yn y gyntaf o gyfres o blismon da plismon drwg radical ôl-dremiol a Wendy Houstoun neidiwch yn ôl ar fwrdd y Phantom Ride, gyda rhywfaint o gydweithredwyr, i gofio rhai o’r pethau anghofiedig ... Mae Rowley a Morgan wedi bod yn gwneud gwaith arbrofol gyda’i gilydd, a gydag eraill (Brith Gof, Forced Entertainment, Pearson/Brookes, National Theatre Wales) ers 1990. Dim ond mewn atgofion y mae llawer o’r gwaith yna yn bodoli erbyn hyn. Yn 2008 fe wnaethon nhw greu Phantom Ride, perfformiad yn seiliedig ar olion gwaith coll y gwneuthurwr ffilm arloesol o dde Cymru, William Hagger. Yn 2017, gyda choreograffydd ac awdur perfformiad Wendy Houstoun, fe ddechreuon nhw archwilio ailgyflwyniad cyfoes o’u gweithiau coll eu hunain. Fe fydd ymwelwyr i’r arddangosfa yn cael cyfle hefyd i ddefnyddio’r meddalwedd mynegiannol a ddatblygwyd mewn ymateb i’r teithiau creadigol yma ar draws amrywiol blatfformau digidol, y cyfan wedi’u creu yn ofalus i gyrraedd y cynulleidfaoedd ehangaf posibl.
