We are excited to be building on nearly a decade of WOW working as a conduit for change and so after 12 incredible years as Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre I have left to establish The WOW Foundation. This will exist as an independent charity working with national and international partners to build upon and further the work that WOW festivals have begun. WOW is now in over 15 countries across 5 continents. Two million women are a part of the WOW movement, which grows daily - you can see our global map of festivals on the opposite page in this programme. Men and boys are an important part of WOW - we all benefit from a gender equal world. WOW Cardiff is a festival - not a conference or a symposium - because we want to attract and celebrate women and girls from all walks of life. Despite the gravity and seriousness of the issues that hold us back, we aim to build a place of warmth, shared respect and fun. WOW Cardiff is not only the first full-scale WOW festival in Wales, but also our first bilingual festival in the UK. The incredible Charlotte Lewis and Rhiannon White have put together this programme, that brings together so many different women with so much to share.

Has there ever been a more exciting time of change for girls and women? There’s so much to celebrate and so much to improve and it needs everyone to be involved. I founded WOW - Women of the World Festivals in 2010 because I felt we needed a place to get together, to talk and discuss in a spirited, frank and inclusive way all the barriers and possible solutions to achieving a gender equal world and also create an understanding of the intersections that further divide us.

Thank you We are over the moon to share with you the programme for WOW Cardiff 2018. It’s been an incredible journey and from the beginning has been driven by the energy of women and girls from Cardiff. From Ely to St Mellons, Splott to Butetown we have been inspired and amazed by the badass women of our city. We have so much to be proud of. WOW Cardiff gives us an incredible opportunity to come together to talk about what matters to us. We have created a programme which is as rich and diverse as our city, we know that you’ll find treasures in new conversations and activities, stumbling on unexpected moments that we hope will stay with you for a long time.
WOW Schools Day
A day for secondary school students aged 13-18 to explore gender equality and celebrate their role models and the women from history who have inspired them.
You’ll find discussions exploring things like sexuality, menopause, courage, domestic abuse and race. You might don a pair of boxing gloves and fight like a girl, shake it like Beyoncé and learn ways to take care of yourself. We will hear from miners striking women, boxers, leading feminist thinkers, international record breakers, mothers, clowns, young people, survivors, international activists and scientists and many, many more. We are truly excited to be part of this festival and hope you’ll love it as much as we do. Enjoy yourselves! And soak up the infectious energy, optimism and drive that we know WOW offers. Like Roald Dahl, we believe kindness is the number one attribute in a human being and as a collective we think of ways of being kind to our friends, neighbours, communities and spreading kindness in the places we work, learn, shop and be. Being kind means we connect with each other and nurture compassion, which means we all care about each other a little more. Come and join us to spread the love. Rachel Maclean: Spite Your Face
Pull back the gold curtain and you’re in another world! Spite Your Face, Rachel Maclean’s highly colourful, film-based fantasia, is drawn from The Adventures of Pinocchio, the Italian folktale charting the adventures of the little puppet-boy whose nose grows every time he tells a lie. Festival Forte and Newsoundwales present an evening with 4 incredible Welsh artists. Homelessness
It is impossible to ignore the increase in homelessness in Cardiff. According to local charity The Wallich, figures of rough sleepers rose from 12 people in Oct 2013 to 40 people in May 2018. Women of Windrush
The 22nd of June 2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush in the UK, carrying 492 Caribbean passengers who in 1948, accepted the invitation from the UK Government to make Britain their home. 2018 also exposed one of the biggest political scandals in recent years as the Windrush Generation, many of whom are in their 70s, are being deported or threatened with deportation, losing their jobs, and have been refused access to medical treatment. Join us in this very special panel discussion celebrating the Women of the Windrush

Self Care Saturday with Rebecca May
This session will focus on aspects of Yoga to create a healthier relationship with our bodies and minds, look at tools to help reconnect us to our sense of self and choice over our own bodies. Wales is rich with historical sites and museums, but have you ever spoken to any of the curators and experts behind the scenes? And did you know so many of them are women? On the Shoulders of Giants Working class women are the stronghold of society – they create and weave together the fabric of every community. In tough times Wales has seen women embed themselves deep within movements, the linchpins, the leaders. Here in Wales we stand on the shoulders of giants. Join Michael Sheen as he talks with those at the heart of the Miners’ Strike
and the Save Our Steel Campaign, as they share stories of how women came together to join these momentous movements. From hundreds of daily food parcels to arrests on the pickets, we hear from these women who shook their traditional roles to become politicised and fearless for a fight that challenged both communities to the core.

Nothing About Us Without Us
Universal Credit, Brexit and Austerity has put a mounting strain on disability services and access. Empathy, Power and Play: A Clowns Without Borders Workshop
This workshop will be a creative and practical exploration of the glorious potential of play and its ability to create meaningful human connections, inspire change and subvert hierarchy. Participants will be invited to take part in a series of theatre and clown games that inspire creativity and compassion. We fully expect this session to provide a joyful antidote to our inner-perfectionist! This workshop is for adults (18+) and all abilities are welcome, no drama/theatre skills required, just an open mind and willingness to take part. Clowns Without Borders is a registered UK charity whose mission is to use laughter to alleviate the suffering of children affected by war, natural disaster or crisis. Through their performances and workshops they directly acknowledge children’s need for emotional support, respite and reassurance at the very worst of times. Women Stand Together: Grenfell & Aberfan In this panel discussion, WOW Cardiff welcomes survivors and leaders of relief and justice efforts following the Aberfan and
Grenfell Tower disasters. On the 21st October 1966 in Aberfan a colliery spoil tip collapsed engulfing a primary school and 20 houses. 144 people, mostly children, lost their lives. Aberfan lost an entire generation that day. June 2017, nearly 51 years later, a devastating fire tore through Grenfell tower claiming the lives of 71 people and rendering hundreds of families homeless and traumatized. For many of the survivors of these events, the tragedy is as present as if it were yesterday. The similarities between Aberfan and Grenfell are striking. In the immediate aftermath of both of these devastating events, members of the community leapt into action to set up and lead relief efforts in response. Many of these community members were women. Women continue to lead many of the campaigning groups in the ongoing fight for justice. WOW brings together a panel of speakers of women from both Aberfan and Grenfell to talk about ways in which women are continuing the fight for justice. Panelists include: Denise Morgan MBE, Retired Headteacher Gaynor Madgewick, Author Lucy Masoud, London Firefighter Yvette Williams MBE, Justice 4 Grenfell. LayFullStop is a female hip-hop / soul artist from Manchester, by way of Birmingham, and has been performing on stages alongside well established collectives Cul Dè Sac and Roots Raddix. LayFullStop has managed to build a cult following since the release of her solo tracks ‘Ying Yang’ and ‘Aura’ on YouTube in 2016. Lay’s style is an authentic mix of nostalgic soul and UK hiphop, at times singing in the sweetest of tones, whilst still being able to unleash ferocious bars with such seamlessness, neither style is compromised. WOW Spirit has delivered nine WOW festivals in five cities across the UK over the last three years three years (one in 2016, three in 2017 and five in 2018). It is a Southbank Centre initiative funded by Spirit of 2012. WOW Spirit has targeted areas where a lack of cultural infrastructure and limited access to resources and restricted opportunities for female leaders are barriers to community cohesion Each festival has been based on ideas raised at a series of planning sessions called ‘thinkins’. Everyone can come to these to share their ideas and suggestions and make sure that WOW looks at important local issues. Building new festivals across the UK allows women, men, girls and boys (including some of the most marginalised voices in society) to get actively involved in their local communities. As programmers, volunteers and participants, they can help create a fairer, happier society.
