PHOTO ALIGNMENT

THE RESULTS OF THE TIE POINTS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE DUE TO A NUMBER OF PHOTOS THAT WERE TAKEN FROM A DISTANCE, CAPTURING ADJACENT BUILDINGS, ENVIRONMENT AND SKY.

TIE POINTS (254,370) PHOTOGRAPHY ROUTE - TAKING A SET OF IMAGES FROM A DISTANCE AROUND THE STRUCTURE - TAKING A CLOSE UP IMAGES AROUND THE STRUCTURE, INCLUDING SMALL AREAS THAT WERE DIFFICULT TO CAPTURE FROM A DISTANCE CHALLENGES IN PHOTOGRAPHY: - VEGETATIONS AROUND THE PERIMETER THAT COVERS THE STRUCTURE. - ADJACENT BUILDINGS THAT AFFECT THE ABILITY TO CAPTURE THE WHOLE STRUCTURE FROM A DISTANCE. - OUTDOOR FURNITURES THAT COVER CERTAIN AREA OF THE STRUCTURE. - ROOF AREA (ABOVE 3M) THAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. - ROOF SPACE WITH POTTED PLANTS. - THE BUILDING OPERATES WEEKDAYS, THEREFORE, THE ONLY TIME TO TAKE PHOTOS ARE DURING THE WEEKEND OR NON-OPERATIONAL HOURS (WHICH USUALLY IMPOSSIBLE DUE TO THE SEASON SHIFTING TO WINTER SOLISTICE).

CAMERA LOCATION IN PLAN VIEW (266 CAMERAS)

DENSE CLOUD

GENERATED DENSE CLOUD

DENSE CLOUD (CONFIDENCE)

DENSE CLOUD (LEAST CONFIDENCE)

DENSE CLOUD (EXCLUDING LEAST CONFIDENCE)

THE LEAST CONFIDENCE OF THE DENSE CLOUD IS ASSUMED TO BE THE VEGETATION, SURROUNDING BUILDING AND ENVIRONMENT THAT ARE CAPTURED IN THE PROCESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY. HOWEVER, IN TERMS OF REMOVING IT, I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE IMPORTANT CLOUDS THAT SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED AS IT WILL IMPACT THE WHOLE INTEGRITY OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY RESULTING IN MESH HOLES IN SOME AREAS.

DENSE CLOUD (MANUAL CLEANING)

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - FRONT VIEW (CONFIDENCE)

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - FRONT VIEW

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - REAR VIEW (CONFIDENCE)

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - REAR VIEW

FROM TRIAL AND ERROR (SEE APPENDIX), I REALISED THAT IF I REMOVE THE AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED LEAST CONFIDENCE DENSE CLOUD, IT WILL CREATE HOLES EVERYWHERE, THEREFORE, I DECIDED TO MANUALLY CLEAN THE DENSE CLOUD. FROM THE FILTERED CONFIDENCE, THE COLOUR VARIES FROM RED (LEAST CONFIDENCE) TO BLUE (MOST CONFIDENCE). ONE REASON THAT MIGHT AFFECT THIS RESULT IN AGISOFT IS DUE TO THE IMAGES THAT WERE TAKEN. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE STRUCTURE THAT IS SITTING IN A BUSY ENVIRONMENT (WITH FURNITURES, VEGETATION AND ADJACENT BUILDINGS AND ALSO DUE TO THE DIFFICULTY IN CAPTURING FROM A HIGHER POSITION (UNLESS WITH A DRONE WHICH IS PROHIBITED IN THE UNIVERSITY). SELFIE STICK WAS NOT VERY HELPFUL.

3D MESH MODEL FROM AUTOMATICALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - REAR VIEW

3D MESH MODEL FROM MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - REAR VIEW

FROM THE COMPARISON ABOVE, IT CAN BE SEEN THAT THE GAPS IN BETWEEN THE STRUCTURES ARE COVERED WITH MESH AS IT WAS UNABLE TO DETECT THE SUPPORTING MEMBERS ACCURATELY. THE PANELS ABOVE THE STRUCTURE LOOKED VERY MESSY (THE ASSUMPTION WOULD BE THAT THE COLOUR IS TOO SIMILAR TO THE SKY COLOUR THAT IT DETECTS BOTH). ANOTHER PROBLEM WOULD BE IN THE WINDOWS AREA WHERE IT SHOULD BE TRANSPARENT (I DECIDED TO CLEAN IT OUT SO IT CAN SHOW THE REFLECTED INTERNAL TIMBER CLADDING OF THE FRONT STRUCTURE). THE VEGETATIONS THAT ARE LOCATED IN THE CORNER RESULTED IN THE DIFFICULTY IN TAKING PHOTOS OF THE WHOLE STRUCTURE.

BUILD TEXTURE FROM MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD

BUILD TEXTURE WITH DEFAULT SETTING - FRONT VIEW (4095 SIZE COUNT)

BUILD TEXTURE WITH ADJUSTED SETTING - FRONT VIEW (10000 SIZE COUNT)

BUILD TEXTURE WITH DEFAULT SETTING - REAR VIEW (4095 SIZE COUNT)

BUILD TEXTURE WITH ADJUSTED SETTING - REAR VIEW (10000 SIZE COUNT)

AFTER BUILDING TECTURE, THE PANELS ARE LESS BUBBLY AND IS MORE REFINED. THE TIMBER CLADDINGS ARE MORE REFINED AND THE GRASS TEXTURE IS A LOT BETTER THAN PREVIOUSLY, THE REFLECTION OF THE TIMBER CLADDING CAN BE SEEN FROM THE WINDOW AS IT IS TRANSPARENT. COVERING HOLES FOR THE ROOF IS IMPOSSIBLE AS THE CORNER OF THE ROOF IS COVERED WITH VEGETATION, UNLESS FIXED FROM OTHER SOFTWARE. SOME PARTS OF THE ROOF ARE STILL BUBBLY EVEN AFTER THE INCREASED SIZE COUNT OF THE TEXTURE. FROM THE COMPARISON OF THE DEFAULT SETTING AND ADJUSTED SETTING OF THE TEXTURE, IT CAN BE SEEN THAT THE QUALITY IS RELATIVELY SIMILAR UNLESS YOU PUT IT NEXT TO EACH OTHER.

SOLID MESH

SOLID MESH VIEW 1

SOLID MESH VIEW 2

SOLID MESH VIEW 3

SOLID MESH VIEW 4

THE SOLID MESH VIEW IN AGISOFT ALLOWS FOR EASIER DETECTION OF HOLES IN MESH. THE HOLES ARE IN THE GAPS BETWEEN THE ROOF AND THE STRUCTURE, WINDOWS, AND THE ROOF ITSELF. IT CAN BE SEEN HOW THE ROOF SLOWLY MERGING INTO THE VEGETATION AS IT WAS COVERED. THE ROOF PART WAS UNABLE TO BE CAPTURED EVEN WHILE STANDING ABOVE THE FURNITURE WITH SELFIE STICK. THE ONLY WAY WAS FROM THE SIDNEY MYER BUILDING (WHICH WAS TOO FAR FROM THE STRUCTURED AND COVERED WITH PLANTS) AND THE MATHEMATIC BUILDING, WHICH CAN ONLY BE VIEWED FROM THE CORNER. THE REST OF THE WINDOWS IN THE BUILDINGS ARE PRIVATE TEACHER ROOM, THEREFORE, IT WAS 100% IMPOSSIBLE TO BE CAPTURED UNLESS WITH A DRONE. EVEN WITH A DRONE, THE DIFFICULTY THAT WOULD ARISE WAS FROM THE POTTED PLANTS SITTING ON TOP OF THE ROOF STRUCTURE.

THE ACCESS FROM EACH BUILDING IS ONLY AVAILABLE DURING WEEKDAYS WHICH MEANS THAT THERE WILL BE PEOPLE AND THAT THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED. THIS WILL IMPACT ON THE SOFTWARE BEING UNABLE TO ALIGN THE PICTURES. THE SOFTWARE WAS UNABLE TO ALIGN THE PICTURES TAKEN FROM SIDNEY MYER AS IT IS FULLY COVERED WITH VEGETATIONS. USING SELFIE STICK WAS NOT ENOUGH TO CAPTURE THE ROOF SPACE.

IN MY FIRST ATTEMPT, I TOOK 94 IMAGES OF THE SITE. I TOOK A SET OF THE IMAGES FROM A DISTANCE AND THEREFORE, RESULTED IN MISSING FURNITURE DETAILS AND ROOF PANELS. WHEN I FIRST WORK ON THE AGISOFT, I WAS STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY THEREFORE, THE RESULT OF THE MODEL WAS NOT IDEAL.

IN MY SECOND ATTEMPT, I LEARNED HOW TO WORK WITH THE CONFIDENCE, I TRIED REMOVING THE LEAST CONFIDENCE AND SEE HOW IT TURNED OUT. THE SET OF IMAGES THAT WERE TAKEN THIS TIME INCLUDED WITH A BIT OF THE ROOF VIEW MAKES IT ABLE TO DETECT THE PLANTS ABOVE THE ROOF, HOWEVER, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO CLEAN AND THAT MADE ME COME UP WITH A DECISION TO HAVE THE ROOF EMPTY.

SOLID MESH FROM MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD

IN MY THIRD ATTEMPT, I TRIED TO MANUALLY CLEAN THE DENSE CLOUD AS I WAS AFRAID THAT SOME OF THE MISSING INFORMATION FROM PREVIOUSLY WAS DUE TO THE LEAST CONFIDENCE BEING REMOVED. THIS TIME, I DECIDED TO TAKE MORE PICTURES THAN BEFORE TO SEE HOW IT WILL TURN OUT. HOWEVER, IT STILL HAVE A LOT OF ERRORS, THE FURNITURES THAT ARE MISSING SOME TABLE TOP WHEN RENDERED AND HOLES ON THE CLADDING. THEREFORE, I BELIEVE THAT MORE PICTURES DOES NOT JUSTIFY GOOD OR BAD MODEL.

THE RESULTS OF THE TIE POINTS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE DUE TO THE EXISTING CONDITIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT (SKY, TREES, AND CARS).

TIE POINTS (163,209)

PHOTOGRAPHY ROUTE - TAKING A SET OF IMAGES FROM A DISTANCE AROUND THE STRUCTURE - TAKING A CLOSE UP IMAGES AROUND THE STRUCTURE, INCLUDING DETAILS ON THE WALL, FLOOR AND OVERHEAD SPACE. STRUCTURE CHARACTERISTICS - SITTING ON A SLOPED LANDSCAPE, WHERE HIGH SPACE INCLUDING THE ROOF CAN STILL BE TAKEN FROM THE HILL, HOWEVER, NOT 100% ACCURATE. - LOCATED IN A PARK WHICH MAKES IT A LOT EASIER TO PHOTOGRAPH AS THERE IS NO VEGETATIONS NEARBY. - THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES WOULD BE FROM PEOPLE WALKING ON THE STREET (I HAD TO ASK SOMEONE TO LEAVE THE SITE OOPS & AT THE TIME THERE WAS A REPORTER RECORDING FOR THE NEWS) - LARGE STRUCTURE WITH CONSTRUCTED LANDSCAPE.

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD (CONFIDENCE)

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - BLUE SKY ON THE ROOF

MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD

AUTOMATICALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD - REAR VIEW

FROM THE PREVIOUS STRUCTURE, I LEARNED THAT IT IS IDEAL TO TEST ON CLEANING THE DENSE CLOUD MANUALLY. FROM THE LOWER IMAGE COMPARISON, IT CAN BE SEEN THAT THE ROOF STRUCTURE IN THE AUTOMATICALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD HAS A LOT OF MISSING PARTS DUE TO THE DIFFICULTY IN CAPTURING THE ROOF SPACE. THE GRASS CAN BE SEEN LESS DENSE ON THE AUTOMATICALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD AND THAT THE MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD LOOKS MORE COMPLETE. MANUAL CLEANING OBVIOUSLY TAKES LONGER TIME, HOWEVER, I BELIEVE THAT IT GIVES BETTER RESULTS.

3D MESH MODEL

3D MESH MODEL FROM DEPTH MAPS

3D MESH MODEL FROM DENSE CLOUD

3D MESH MODEL FROM DENSE CLOUD (CLEAN CONFIDENCE)

3D MESH MODEL CROPPED TO SHAPE AND TEXTURED

I TRIED GENERATING 3D MESH MODEL FROM DEPTH MAPS, THE RESULTS ARE SMOOTHER THAN DENSE CLOUD, IN A WAY, IT IS LESS SHARP AND DETAILED. THE RESULT OF THE MESH MODEL WAS VERY GOOD COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS STRUCTURE, THE ONLY MINUS PART WAS ON THE ROOF WHERE THE PHOTOS RECOGNISED THE SKY AS PART OF THE ROOF. I ASSUME, IF I HAVE THE ABILITY TO USE DRONE AND TAKE A PICTURE FROM THE HIGHER POINT, IT WILL BE MUCH MORE CLEARER.

FIXING ROOF AND BUILD TEXTURE (15000 SIZE COUNT)

ROOF WITH MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD + SOME OF THE BLUE PARTS > FILL HOLE > BUILD TEXTURE (15000 SIZE COUNT)

ROOF WITH AUTOMATICALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD > FILL HOLE > BUILD TEXTURE (DEFAULT - 4095 SIZE COUNT)

ROOF WITH MANUALLY CLEANED DENSE CLOUD + SOME OF THE BLUE PARTS > FILL HOLE

ROOF WITH MANUALLY CLEANED ALL BLUE PARTS > FILL HOLE > BUILD TEXTURE (10000 SIZE COUNT)

I LEARNED A LOT WHEN I WAS TRYING TO FIX THE BLUE (SKY) PART IN THE ROOF. IF THE HOLES ARE TOO BIG, THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BUILD TEXTURE TO THAT EXTENT. AND DURING THE PROCESS OF FILLING HOLES, THE SURFACE WILL BE BUMPY AND THAT IS NOT VERY IDEAL FROM THE ELEVATION VIEW. FROM TRIAL AND ERROR, I DECIDED TO REMOVE ONLY THE OBVIOUS BLUE PARTS AND FILL THE HOLE. AFTER THAT, I TRIED BUILDING TEXTURE WITH A HIGHER FACE COUNT AND IT SURPRISINGLY MERGED WELL ALTHOUGH IS NOT 100% ACCURATE. ALSO, WITH A HIGHER FACE COUNT, THE LESS BLUE PARTS ARE VISIBLE.

BRANDENBURG GATE BRIEF HISTORY A Surving Witness of Significant Historical Moments

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

CONSTRUCTION The gate was built between 1788 and 1791 by Prussian King Frederick William II as a key entry point to the city of Berlin.

THE RETURN OF QUADRIGA

Napoleon Bonaparte entered into Berlin in 1806 through the gate and ships the Quadriga (statue of the goddess of victory driving a chariot pulled by four horses) to Paris.

The Quadriga was returned in 1814 after Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated.

HITLER RISES WORLD WAR 2 The gate miraculously survives WW2.

Hitler held a parade through Berlin in 1933. Hitler himself and the other 20,000 people walked through the gate. He used the grandeur and significance of the structure to show power.

THE BERLIN WALL

THE FALL OF BERLIN WALL

THE SURVIVING GATE

The gate was on the eastern side of Berlin and marked a significant division amongst the city.

The wall was torn down and Berlin became one again allowing people to freely flow through the gate.

The gate receives around 12 million visitors per year and continues to be a place of cultural, political, social and historical significance.
