DYING FOR LOVE! Love is always associated with the opposite sex, knowing that it’s the ultimate meaning of happiness is to fall in love, we spend most of our life searching for him/her, trying to do things to attract them and once we find them we try our best not to lose them because we know deep down that nothing in life is greater than being in love and that it is what will bring us happiness and joy. But, what if pursuing this state of happiness through falling in love might cause our death!? Literary not on a poetic sense. Soldiers, police and army officers who threaten their lives daily to protect us and help this country survive the severe instability and the threats we encounter daily is the kind of love like no other. Love for ones’ country is one of the most elevated kinds of love that one might not get it back in return in a materialistic sense, but still it’s one of the noblest kinds of love. Seeing an army officer who dies by the hands of terrorist and a police officer who willingly tries to stop a bomb from exploding, knowing the chances of survival is

50%, requires something bigger than love, it requires strong faith; faith that what he is doing is bigger than himself, and bigger than his life and he doesn’t question it. Watching war movies and the attitude of the soldiers fighting in the battle makes me always wonder what was he thinking of in the last minute? What would his calculations be? What about his wife and family whom he left behind? Did he think of this moment when he was applying to join the army or the police? All I can say is without these people putting their lives in danger out there, we won’t be who we are or find this quality of life we are living these days, despite all the threats and attacks our borders are witnessing. I wish that bloodshed would come to an end and if soldier’s blood will spread, I hope it will never be on the hands of fellow Egyptians, but rather on the boarders against a real non Egyptian enemy. Long live Egypt and long live our Soldiers!

Jewelry Goddess Tell us more about you? I am a wife, a mother, and a lover of all things artistic and innovative. I am drawn to all forms of art and design. I have always had a passion for jewelry making, which led me to regularly visit the jewelry making workshops in ‘Khan El Khalili,’ and learn from the skillful jewelry makers. Recently, I enrolled in a jewelry design workshop, which gave me more an in depth of the know how of the intricate jewelry making techniques. How did your passion for jewelry begin? As a young girl, I used to collect sea-glass that would wash up on the shore of the beach, and I would make rings for my sisters out of it. Later, I experimented with different materials. When I finally knew what kind of jewelry designer and maker I wanted to be and what materials best represent who I am, I decided to pursue it as more than a hobby. My line is a result of years of exploration, learning, growing, and settling into my own skin as a designer. Who or what inspires you? I am inspired by anything and everything. I can find inspiration in the most obvious of things like a painting or a song, and also the most mundane of things like a tree leaf or summer breeze, or even a subtle moment or a feeling. Anything can be inspiring if you pay enough attention to it. What distinguishes your pieces from any other accessory designer? I believe what distinguishes my designs from the rest is that I don’t follow trends; I don’t create conventional pieces. I am trying to redefine what jewelry is and how it should be worn. Who are your idols or the designers you aspire to? I admire the work of artists across the board, not just in jewelry design. I admire the work of certain fashion designers, filmmakers, painters, and so on. Who is your ideal client? My ideal client is anyone inspired or moved by my creations; anyone who sees something special in them, or who feels an immediate connection with one of my pieces.

Tell us more about your cooperation with designer Essa Walla and the ‘Nina Dress’… Essa Walla and I became fast friends upon introduction, such an amazing human being. He was generous enough to share a great opportunity with me to dress Lady Gaga on her recent tour stop in the UAE. As fortune would have it, Gaga chose to wear my arm cuffs along with his garment design at a postconcert event with fans. We then decided to collaborate and the Nina Dress was born. He was kind enough to name it so, which was a wonderful surprise to me. Who are the celebrities that wore your designs? Locally, there are a few like Dorra, Yasmine Raeis, and Ghada Adel. And of course like I said before, the legendary Lady Gaga. Who is the celebrity you wish to design for? Dressing a celebrity is not a main objective. When the opportunity comes I am very grateful as it shines a great spotlight on my brand, but I am more focused on creating designs for anyone and everyone who wants a little bit of adventure in their wardrobe. What is the closest piece of your designs to your heart? My favourite piece was a flower brooch that I made out of plastic spoons, it was an assignment given to us at the jewelry-making workshop. I loved that I repurposed something

LOUNGE 18

mundane to make something beautiful out of it. What are your tips to girls who would love to be accessory designers? The best advice I can give to an upcoming designer is to work with your hands, and not just commission a workman to create the piece you’ve designed. I create my pieces with my own hands; this allows me to get as creative as I can see the piece take shape in my hands. You can start out with an idea, and as you’re working with the material, the piece turns into another idea completely and you end up with something very special. What are the challenges that you encounter during making your jewelry? The main challenge I think is to balance my home and work; something that my family has been very supportive of, secondly, is that there are not enough hours in the day. What are your favourite materials when designing your jewelry? I already design with my favourite materials, precious and semi-precious stones, copper, brass, silver, gold, and enamel. If you could describe your jewelry in two words, what would you say? Adventurous and bold. How can people order your pieces and see the full collection? You can find me on Instagram and Facebook as Nina Bakry Body Jewelry where information on how to order is available.

TIPS FOR A PERFECT VALENTINE’S

j

ust like a Christmas Eve, Easter and New Year, a Valentine’s Day is an occasion to celebrate; a sentimental day to let your partner know how much you love him/her. And as Saint Valentine was rescuing his life to save the love stories in the Middle age, we should too. Valentine’s Day represents a warning alarm to stop and think where your relationship is going. If you need to change anything about it or just celebrate your glowing feelings on a special day, Sherouk Nafie brings you a different aspect to Valentine’s this year. Valentine’s Day is celebrated by people worldwide; they celebrate their memories, their love, as well as remind each other how much they truly love one another. Everyone likes Valentine’s; it’s romantic and special in a way. And

LOUNGE 26

Valentine’s doesn’t mean you should only celebrate your love to you partner, but to your family, friends and perhaps yourself too. So here are some tips to celebrate your Valentine’s with your partner.

PREPARE FOR IT

With fun and determination to enjoy a special date, plan a romantic or perhaps an adventurous date. Don’t consider yourself old and go for the casual ordinary dinner at your favourite restaurant, renew the spark of your relationship and go for something extraordinary, surprise your partner with some different ideas and make it a Valentine’s to remember.

CRAFT IT

You are most probably buying your partner a Valentine’s gift to show your love, but again make sure you step away from the ordinary gifts, and surprise him with a handmade gift. You can maybe bake a cake, create a photo collage on a flowery album, or just paint his/ her room walls. Be creative and get out of the pattern of the ordinary gifts.

ENJOY IT

On such a unique date, forget about your relationship problems, your friends’ problems, and the girl you thought he flirted with, avoid all types of discussions about any sort of problems and just enjoy your date. Do you remember your first dates when you were still getting to know each other, enjoyed conversations together and had lots of fun? Stick to this and live a day from the past, and you’ll be fascinated how this will affect your relationship positively afterwards.

ACCEPT IT

Some partners just don’t like Valentine’s Day especially men so, don’t except that it has to be a legendary day, where you will get a proposal at the end. Some men don’t think of big teddies, red roses and written cards, but they will still enjoy a nice date with you and of course, he still loves you and would love to show you how much he cares. And so are some girls who are not Valentine’s firm believers, still she loves her partner and she appreciates his efforts.

FIX IT

Valentine’s Day is an occasion for people to celebrate their love so, consider it as a warning alarm for your relationships, remind yourself of what your relationship lacks, what is missing, and what your problems are will probably renew your passion. And so, think about your relationship and figure out all the negative points and consider Valentine’s as an occasion to make a new start or fix whatever needs to be fixed. After all, Valentine’s is not about gifts, roses or the perfect outing, but it’s about your love for your partner. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate that day, you should always remind yourself that you should show and tell your partner that he/she is appreciated and loved..Happy Valentine’s day to you all.

Tell us more about you? I graduated from AUC with a bachelor degree in Mass Communication, and I took several acting and theater courses. I acted in a play on the university’s theater called ‘Segn El Nesa,’ and after I graduated I worked as a producer, but I was satisfied with what I did as I enjoy acting more than anything. I told my husband director Mohamed Sami that I want to quit because although working as a producer is close to what I love, but not as enjoyable as acting to me, and he promised that he will give me a role in his coming project, which was ‘Hekayet Hayah.’ Before acting, I took intensive courses with acting coach Marwa Gebril. How did you and Mohamed Sami meet? Mohamed was my colleague at university. We were together as a couple for several years before we got married. What is the thing that he likes the most about you? And what do you like about him? What he likes about me the most is that I am really close to his work so, I understand what he wants to tell me. What I like the most about him is that he is very supportive; he is not like guys who feel intimidated by their wife’s success; on the contrary, he wants me to be in the best place in what I do, even when I was considering directing, he didn’t feel that I will be his competitor; however, he was teaching me and giving me all the support he can. What is the difference between Mohamed Sami at home and on set? (Laughs) Don’t remind me he is someone else. He changes completely on set; he is very strict especially with me, he becomes really aggressive and sometimes rude! I once told him that I won’t work with him again. I know he wants to get the best out of me, but he tends to be too harsh on me to the point that I sometimes cry on set. And when he returns home he forgets about it? Absolutely, and he acts as if nothing happened, but I don’t let go, I actually blame him for shouting at me on set in front of all the people, he explains that Mai, the actress, is different from Mai my sweet wife. I seem to not agree with him as Mai is the same person who was humiliated on set (smiles). What is your favourite movie for Faten Hamama? ‘Doaa El Karawan’ of course. Who is the Egyptian star from the golden age you look up to? Soad Housni..I would love to have a role like hers in ‘Khali Balak Men Zozo.’

How were you nominated for your role in “Baba Gab Moz”? By director Ashraf Zaki. He told me he has a role for me in a play, which shocked me because I thought theater had no future when the 25th of January Revolution took place, and there are no shows since then, but I think that ‘Baba Gab Moz’ is considered the first play after a long absence. I loved the script and my role because I sing and dance, and the role is totally different from what I’ve done before. What is the most challenging thing about working at theater? Originally, I have an issue that was threatening my acting career as a whole, which is that I am a very shy person, as soon as the camera roles I feel embarrassed. This time, I had to overcome my shyness to deal with live audience. This was the most challenging thing to me, not the role and not acting itself. We got trained for four months, and still the view of the empty chairs scares me. Who are your favourite designers? I love Hisham Aboul Ela, he is the one who designed my costumes for the play. What I like the most about him is the fit, his designs fits me perfectly. Internationally, I love Elie Saab and Alexander McQueen. What is your favourite hotspot for relaxation? In general, I love Bali, I wish I can go this year on my vacation. Where will you spend this Valentine’s? The play is taking all my time so I don’t know if I will be able to celebrate this Valentine’s, but if not we will try to make it up on another day. The good thing is that Mohamed is understanding. What is the best gift you’ve ever received? I love thoughtful gifts more than the materialistic ones. Mohamed once made me a board with all the posters of my favourite movies, actors as well as my favourite quotes from movies written underneath, this is the best gift I have ever received. What are you currently working on? There will be a break from theater in April till Ramadan. During this time, I will shoot a serial that will be aired in Ramadan called ‘Ard El Naam’ directed by Mohamed Sami starring Ahmed Zaher, Ruby and Rania Youssef. There is also a movie, but the project is not settled yet.

Tell us more about yourself... I consider myself to be a lucky guy for being one of the all too few that gets paid to do what they love and be recognized for it. I used to believe that I was very unlucky, I was never the kind of guy that would win anything, but I guess the world is changing, so why wouldn’t my luck. I like to laugh and make people laugh. Your beginning was through ‘Al Bernameg,’ is there any chance it will be back? Your guess is as good as mine. What did your experience in ‘Al Bernameg’ add to you? It gave me the space to grow creatively and professionally, and the confidence to be in front of any camera or audience. It also added a group of lifelong friends. How were you nominated for the role of Ramy in the movie ‘From A to B’? I had to sleep with a lot of people. Obviously kidding. One day I got a call from the producer Mohamed Hefzy, who invited me to audition for a role in an international film. He thought that the role of Ramy suited me. I auditioned three times, reading three different scenes. These auditions were taped and sent to the director, Ali Mustafa in Dubai. Ali and I had a Skype conversation following him seeing the audition tapes, in which he

congratulated me on getting the part. Tell us more about your role... Ramy is a 25 year old momma’s boy that lives inside too many bubbles. He thinks he is a journalist, blogger and activist and gets a hilarious slap in the face by reality when he decides to go on this road trip with his school buddies. Was it scary to have your first feature film acting experience with non-Egyptian actors? Quite the contrary, it was a pleasure acting with the whole cast of the film. Personally, I am very comfortable in an international setting. I grew up in a multinational community and I am used to having peers from around the world. Of course, it goes without saying that it was an honour to work with such a caliber of actors as (costars) Fahad Albutari, Fadi Rifai, as well as Madeline Zima from the American hit show, Californication, and Leem Lubany from the award winning movie Omar. That being said, the film included Egyptian actors Khaled Aboulnaga, Yosra El Lozy, and Maha Abo Ouf. You added a few more Egyptian jokes to the movie script. Tell us more about that... The movie is full of Egyptian jokes, some written and some improvised. As the only

authentic Egyptian that was involved in the fine-tuning of the character, Ramy, it makes sense that I would have a lot to do with them. It seems you had a lot of fun behind the scenes. Can you share any of these moments? I like to work hard and play hard so there was a lot of fun stuff happening behind the scenes. Some of the stuff you will be able to see on The Making and the other stuff you’ll never know about. Your English is flawless. How did you master the English language? I have spoken it every day since I was two. Practice makes perfect. Who are the actors you aspire to be? I admire many different actors for different reasons. At best, I can learn from all of them and put my own spin on the things I have learned. However, if I had to name someone, it would be Omar Sherif, and this would be because he is both and Egyptian and international success. I’d like to do this with a laugh or two. What is the role you wish to play most in international cinema? Either one that makes me laugh the hardest or wows me the most. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still trying to answer this question.

SEX, GENETICS &CANCER d

id you ever know that sex could sometimes lead to cancer!? This month Dr. Ahmed Ihab tells us how some sexual behaviors can increase the risk of developing cancer and reveals all about the link between the three words Sex Genetics and Cancer. Is there any sort of association between the three words (sex, genetics and Cancer)? The answer is simply yes, but the question remains, how does this happen? I just want to make it easily comprehended by non-medical specialists or in other words I want to mark it out as a public orientation: Sexually transmitted diseases are the actual linkers between the three words. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is transmitted through sexual intercourse where enters the human cell and disrupts the cellular genetic machinery: which means that the viral proteins destroys the human genes responsible for cancer inhibition, those human genes are referred to as Guardian of the genome against cancer. How is HPV transmitted? HPV affects both males and females, with higher incidence in females especially those with multiple sexual partners. It is unusual to be transmitted through blood but can be transmitted from mother to child during birth or can be transmitted from one person to another by skin contact, genital contact and shared instruments. What is the presentation and types of cancer caused by HPV? Usually patients with HPV present with warts in the genitalia or in the skin or may present originally with cancer that affects the Cervix, the anal canal, the penis, the vagina and the pharynx

mostly the areas of sexual contribution. How are genes involved in HPV infection and Cancer? Genes are actually involved in two aspects The diagnosis: DNA of the virus can be obtained from cells taken from any part of the body of high risk individuals as the Vagina, Cervix, Penis, and mouth. This DNA analysis is FDA approved and is required to identify infections prior cancer transformation. Cancer transformation: The Viral E6 and E7 proteins become integrated into the human tumor- suppressor-genes and inhibit their function; tumor-suppressor-genes are present in all normal humans and are dedicated to kill the crazy cells that think of transforming into cancer. Do condoms protect against HPV infection? Condoms do not completely protect from the virus because the areas around the genitals including the inner thigh area are not covered, thus exposing these areas to the infected person’s skin. Then how is HPV prevented? In developed countries, cervical screening using a (Pap Smear test) which is the routine examination of sexually active female at high risk by taking cells from the cervix to detect abnormal cells that may develop into cancer. In addition there are two novel vaccines that are given to sexually active females who are not infected with the virus. The vaccines protect against initial infection with HPV and HPV associated cancer cases. But the vaccines provide minimal benefit to women having already been infected with HPV types

zodiac

Capricorn Dec.23 - Jan.20 This month eroticism will blossom in words. You’ll speak a lot with (or about) your loved one, you’ll write love notes, emails, text messages or even poetry! But, even though “first came the word,” you’ll have to get down to action as well! Be careful not to overdo it with words as they might end up replacing action! Make a plan, use your persuasion capacity (which is second to none right now!) and bring your sentimental life to the level of facts. A long walk or even a short trip together would be welcome. On February 3rd-4th 2015, your emotions will be amplified and can lead to a significant event at the sentimental level. February 2015 will be excellent for intellectual activities, training, acquisition of new knowledge and information, writing, editing, etc. You will also do well in exams or interviews. The key to success in February 2015 will be communication. You’ll have an overwhelming capacity to persuade and you’ll send your messages with strength and glow, impressing your interlocutors. Success will also follow you if you deal in commerce or any other type of trading.

Aquarius Jan.21 - Feb.19 This month will generate great thirst for affection and wide availability so that, in your own turn, you can overwhelm your partner with affection. You will have high expectations of your partner as regards their behavior and the proofs of appreciation that they should offer. You can be very happy in February 2015, but for this you’ll have to have reasonable expectations and stop thinking you’re the center of the universe. Also, you’ll have the attitude of a leader, you’ll ooze strength, confidence and competence, you’ll be assigned important tasks that will make you stand out. The key to success in February 2015: energy, initiative and ingenuity, in combination with good social and professional networking. After the first decan, some relief will be felt, an obstacle that made your road difficult will be cleared. It will be an excellent month for money, as long as you are moderate and you don’t allow greed and waste to take control.

Jennifer Aniston, February 11, 1969

Pisces Feb.20 - Mar.21 The first two decans of February 2015 will overflow with emotional thrill. Your desire to win somebody’s affection, their power to seduce and their affective availability will be at their peaks, and the number of sentimental opportunities will grow. The feelings will be tumultuous; the desire will be strong and eager and will sometimes be expressed dramatically or excessively. The events, although exciting, can be bewildering. You’ll be ready to re-configure your life objectives according to the impulses of passion. February 2015 will have a huge erotic potential for you. From the sentimental point of view, the first decan will be more complicated or unusual. But the experiences you’ll have, although not exactly pleasant, will lead to raising awareness of a situation or settling one. This month will lend you passion and dynamism in the first two decans. You’ll get very involved in what you’ll do, you’ll take the initiative, you’ll fight, strive. You’ll be energetic, determined and efficient. Sometimes your methods will be rash, aggressive or careless and you’ll tend to bite off more than you can chew. In spite of all this, you can be successful.

Aries Mar.22 - Apr.20

Happy Birthday

Aquarius LOUNGE 54

Things will not always be simple in this period, but they will eventually lead to a more satisfactory couple life. The first two decans in February will not be very exuberant for Aries people at the sentimental level, but they will incline especially towards meditation, privacy and maybe even towards solitude. It’ll be like catching your breath before thrusting yourself into the whirl. And there will really be an emotional whirl, which will begin on February 20th. This month, favoured activities for Aries will be the cultural-scientific ones, higher education, specializations, professional trips and initiatives that imply long distances, foreign countries or foreigners. An older project might come back to attention. You’ll sometimes stagnate, change your mind or come back to some phases for adjustments etc., but on the whole you’ll make progress.

Taurus

Gemini

Apr.21 - May 21

May.22 - Jun.21

The first two decans of February 2015 could be very romantic. It will be a good period to go out more together with your partner, to have fun with friends or make future plans. One topic that will interest you all throughout the month will be sexuality, an aspect which you can still work on in order to improve it: there still are unexplored ways, there still is room for communication in order to reach perfect communion. In the last decan of February 2015, you will be more isolated or could be under an impression of loneliness or dissatisfaction. It’s not excluded that you have an unpleasant surprise at the sentimental level. Also, this month favours advancement, standing out, being in the center of attention and attracting admiration and positive appreciation. You will also have strong financial connotations. In the long run, until the end of 2017, the ruler of Taurus’ house of career will draw attention towards business, investments, various transactions.

This month your feelings and wishes will acquire importance and prevail over reason, and may create sentimental moments of unique charm and intensity. Beware, though, because excessive feelings can lead to critical moments as well! Information, communication and trips will be at the top of your preoccupations all throughout February 2015. It will be an excellent period for studies, research, writing, editing, publishing, conferences and interviews, trips, meetings, negotiations, and even for activities that require energy and skill. All these domains are familiar to you, classifying under your innate talents, so you will definitely do your best, thus ensuring success. February will speak of ambition and competitiveness, but also of personal charm and social relationships, which can support advancement. The second and third decans will be the most successful, and professional accomplishment will imply financial benefits also. Your shape and mood will be on the rise.

Cancer

Leo

Jun.22 - Jul.23

Jul.24 - Aug.23

The first two decans of February 2015 will not be very spectacular at the sentimental level, but rather quiet or without significant events. At a common level, it will be about routine and sharing responsibilities within the couple, and at a more elevated level, about cultural-spiritual search, about the shared wish to discover new horizons. It could also be about a romantic trip or taken for sentimental reasons. The last decan of February 2015 will be much more alert and more exciting. Opportunities can appear at any time. The chances that will be offered in this period will imply the need for some changes or re-inventions, which you’ll have to summon up the courage for and make.

Communication will remain essential to your sentimental life all throughout February 2015. Your sentimental life will be marked by discussions, debates, correspondence, messages etc. on various topics, among which some important, with old roots, that are looking for clarification. There will be trips to take and reunions to attend, there will be negotiations and a desire for changes or reorganization. The good signs, clarifications and solutions will start coming in the second decan. In general, in this period your interests will gravitate around relationships, and their life partner will play the starring role. You might, however, have the tendency of over thinking everything and of worrying too much. Money or friends can have an impact on Leo’s couple. Relationships with the others will be crucial.

Virgo

Libra

Aug.24 - Sep.23

Sep.24 - Oct.23

Although it is the middle of winter, the first two decans of February 2015 will be hot. Big storms, flows of passion, sheer craziness! Nothing can stop your feelings, nothing can make them give up the struggle to reach the person they want. There will be no caution, no reason, nothing but instincts. Your motto for February 2015 will be “make it or break it!.” The stars will incline towards making it, but if you have a problematic birth chart, the option with breaking it is not excluded either. The last decan will be less passionate, but will predispose them to an idealistic romanticism, which can be charming but rather misleading. The key words of the month will begin with “c”: cooperation, collaboration, contracts, competition. You’ll interact with the others actively, you’ll start new partnerships or you’ll end some partnerships that didn’t please you.

February 2015 you can expect anything without prior notice. What will happen to you will largely depend on you, so try to behave in a balanced and tactful way. The situation can completely go crazy in the last decan of February 2015. Your sexual instinct will be strong, your emotions intense, but you’ll risk having exaggerated reactions or making wrong decisions. It is possible that older problems will come to the surface or that misunderstandings related to communication will occur. You’ll have an active, busy, pressing month, that will demand a lot from you. Fortunately, the work, although hard, can also be pleasant. And it can even be productive if you work systematically and in an organized way. You’ll benefit from circumstances that will favour you, you’ll know how to place yourself in the center of attention and in a good light.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Oct.24 - Nov.22

Nov.23 - Dec.22

February 2014 will be a great month for fun and sentimental affairs. In the first two decans, you’ll live life fully and you’ll have sexual energy worthy of memorable adventures. You’ll express your instincts with a lot of strength, you’ll get rid of inhibitions, you’ll flirt with youthful eagerness, by no means will you allow your rivals to snatch your prey, and in the bedroom you’ll simply be a tornado that will amaze, enchant and exhaust your partner. This period will especially encourage new love stories, passionate or free love, with no strings attached. This month, you’ll impose, improve your image, and climb to the top. In addition, your income will start to increase and if you manage it wisely, you can consolidate your financial situation. You’ll have to make efforts accordingly, though. Thus, February 2015 foreshadows to be productive, but busy and stressful.

The first part of February 2015 will not abound in gallant offers. It’ll rather be a solitary period, in which you’ll cherish privacy; a period of analysis and evaluation, in which you’ll examine closely what expectations you have of your significant other and what you can offer in return, how important the current relationship is for you, etc. It is also possible that there will be situations which will bring the “best behaviour,” conservative tendencies face to face with great thirst for freedom and nonconformity. Love will be in the air and it could manifest in the most unexpected and surprising ways. In the first decan, you will have to take a test that will assess their knowledge and capacity to find solutions. You might have the feeling that you are undergoing a blockage that you have an obstacle in your way, but you’ll eventually win by intelligence and diplomatic negotiations.
