saltwater spa campbellton, new brunswick, canada New Brunswick is a Canadian province with one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis, affecting 1 out of 400 residents. The town of Campbellton rests on the base of Sugarloaf mountain. According to the town’s website, it is referred to as the “undisputed capital of salmon country”. The Atlantic Salmon is loved by both residents and tourists alike, and is the inspiration of the design. Like an Atlantic salmon on the long journey home to begin a new life, Saltwater Spa strives to provide mental and physical assistance to people with multiple sclerosis in navigating life’s many obstacles, by giving them the strength to overcome them.

The Atlantic Salmon takes a particular route to spawn. They start in freshwater and mature there until they are ready to swim upstream to feed in the ocean. The salmon then return to the river to spawn.
This cycle is seen in the floor plan. The consultation room is the first step to recovery, but before recovery comes obstacles and hard work, seen as physical therapy in the swimming pool and exercise areas.

Materials played a big role in developing the design concept. Taken from the color contrast of the scales on an Atlantic salmon, the materials on opposite facing perpendicular planes contrast each other either in color or in texture. This helps those with multiple sclerosis by making it easier to navigate around the area, as well as while using the kitchen itself. This is also seen in the pool and in the exercise room, especially the contrast of the charcoal and the blue.

next denver, co The design of this office for NEXT is inspiredby the flexible use of the block at Larimer Square during the summer. Located only a few blocks away from the site, Larimer Square is the first historic district in Denver. Various shops bring in visitors year-round, but during the warmer months, the city blocks off the road for events like the Slow Food Movement, the Chalk Art Festival, and dining under the stars. Inspired by how both sides of the street come together to work as one unit, despite being separated by ongoing traffic, this new office for NEXT strives to use multi-functionality to bring both suites together with a constant flow of employees going to and from each side.

The diagrams shown above represent the merging of both street sides of Larimer Square. The blue indicates where the heavy foot traffic is and the yellow suggests that both sides are open and connected as well.

benching The diagram on the right shows the relationships between the collaboration “tents“ and the open office seating. Located in the middle of Suite 150, these spaces allow employees to gather and separate for impromptu meetings or for those that need some alone time. Each “tent” has a different color trim which allows for easier wayfinding.

Taking on the shape of a tent, each rest area becomes its own semi-private space, despite being completely open. The sheer material on the “roof helps to control the acoustics while letting in light underneath. The wood used for the frame is a nod to the trees that line both sides of the street.

weave lighting design This laundrocafe was designed to support a custom lighting fixture for the RBT lighting competition. For the competition, we were tasked with designing a space that supported the custom light fixture, and could be opened up to meet the street. The color palette of the space is inspired by the colors of the sky around late afternoon. The concept leading the design is taken from the feelings of removing line-dried laundry in your backyard or balcony after a long day.

sketches from 2018-2019 Sketching by hand is a skill that is useful in working through a concept, visualizing spaces, and analyzing things seen. These are a collection of sketches over the last 3 years from from quick sketches to marker renderings and from a study abroad in Japan.
