melange
600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. Sponsored by Haworth, Melange is a co-working office where people of various backgrounds can come together and connect. The design of the office interior was inspired by the rich culture and history of Chinatown, as well as the diversity of the people in it. To achieve a comforting atmosphere, rustic materials and elements modeled after traditional Chinese patterns were used throughout the space. This acts as a juxtaposition to the modern building. Red, often used to represent happiness and prosperity, is the main color used in each space for branding and wayfinding. The design process of a two-person team versus a solo project challenged and pushed me to think outside the box to create a unique experience with another designer.

the square Office for Line Corporation To implement Line Corporation’s globally focused mission, my concept focused on connections between spaces of different uses. Almost every room is somehow connected to a bigger space. This encourages employees to interact and share ideas with one another. The color scheme and atmosphere was taken after the brand itself, which is playful and fun with a bright green statement color. Green carpet is placed in areas upstairs and downstairs as a refuge from office life for people on both levels. The reasoning behind this is to create the carefree feeling of a summer picnic.

retreat Japanese Courtyard Gardens Cherry Hill, Central Park New York, NY Inspired by the serenity that comes from traditional Japanese courtyard gardens, this space strives to bring calm to visitors in all stages of life. The interior, while minimal, incorporates a lot of wood, with green as an accent color. The warmth from the wood materials brings an earthy feeling to the space, grounding the visitor with nature. Green is scattered across to further bring the outside, in. Man has an affinity to nature, and even if you only see that nature in your peripheral, your mind will relax and begin to destress.

sketches 2016-2017
The past year of sketching has been an eye-opener for me. After the first few weeks of sketching during the summer of my freshman year, I realized that gaining skill in sketching is like sports or training a muscle. Some people have a natural talent, but not everyone does. If you don’t have that talent, you have to practice everyday to get better. I also learned that sketching isn’t about what is on paper, it is what you see. Whether it be in your brain or in the physical world, a vision is what makes a sketch strong. In that sense, I’ve learned the importance of looking at my paper less and less because I’ve realized that conveying a message is more important to me than sketching every little detail.
