issue is a stepping stone to the greater things that are about to unfold in the near future. We will strive to bring you great stories and information about our lives, the people and the businesses that make up the East Bay Delta region. See my story on (Pg. 30) of how this dream to reality took place. In this current issue, you will find many fantastic stories. I am sure everyone in my era remembers “Little House on the Prairie.” I had the chance to meet Ms. Beadle aka Charlotte Stewart back in February at the Lapidary Club in Antioch. (Pg. 20), Thanks to Charleen Earley for writing the wonderful article for us. Just when you couldn’t find that great place to eat and relax on the Delta comes now a great article about Sugar Barge (Pg. 17) in Bethel Island. So many more great reads in this issue; it is a page turner to the end of all the wonderful people that I include in the Delta Living family. If you have any ideas for stories or suggestions please email me. Have a great summer and enjoy!

Treasure chest of oddly unique items W Rivertown Treasure Chest here have the three years gone since Toni and I opened Oddly Unique in May, 2014 in downtown Antioch? We grew up in families that cherished antiques and collected vintage and collectibles and started selling in a local co-op about five years prior. We started at 209 G Street in Antioch and then opened a second shop two doors down at 213 G Street a year later in June of the following year. Our inventory consists of antique, vintage, collectible and new items including: jewelry, housewares, furniture, toys, media, man cave, and garden items just to name a few. We try to carry something for everyone or try to find it if we don’t have it. We have worked hard to create a “Cheers” and family type atmosphere. We hope people want to come to see what is new and hang out often, sharing candy or snacks and taking advantage of the deal of the day. Now our new adventure is Rivertown Treasure Chest located at 306 G Street which opened at the beginning of May. 10

July – September 2017

Something for all ages from all decades We have partnered with Earlene Lanter to open a large co-op of numerous creative sellers and featuring a candy shop, new gift center, garden, media and many more “treasures.” There is something for all ages. Right now we are in the process of assisting three non-profits to receive and sell donated furniture, art and other limited items for a shared profit to give back to the community and leaders who have supported us. Giving back in a way like this makes me proud to live and own businesses in Antioch. While we thank all our customers for the continued support we encourage new patrons to come visit us in Antioch’s Historic Rivertown district where you

can shop, dine and enjoy checking out the businesses, or just sit and relax overlooking the Delta. Once a month we participate in the Rivertown Merchants Group which meets to organize downtown events. New events are held each and every month. So join us in the support of downtown Antioch and the see the renewed growth and feel the new energy along the Delta waterfront. Follow us on our media pages for all upcoming events and store specials. Why Box Hair Color Isn’t Good

Real Reasons Hairstylists Dislike Box Color

it turn out like hers? Because we each have done different things to our hair, meaning we’ve all done different shades of color on our hair. My hair didn’t turn out like the lady on the front because By Emily Wesolek I had highlights in my hair, then I put emstylist17@gmail.com a brown over it, then tried the “cinnahere have been numerous times berry” color. Box color from the store isn’t going to that clients have come into the salon saying they’ve been “coloring” be able to customize the color to exactly their hair for years using the box color how you want it. As licensed cosmetolofrom the store - as in, the store where gists, we go to school for 1600 hours you get your groceries. I totally under- that’s quite a long time! But let me tell you - the box color color your hair, you’re getting someone from the store is not the kind of color who can (most likely) get a shade closer to what you want than if you just run in you should be putting on your hair! Clients will often ask me why they the store to grab a few dinner items and shouldn’t use box color from the store. hair color. Many people also don’t understand The first reason I tell them it’s a bad idea is because the color on the box will, most that when you apply color to your hair likely, not turn your hair the exact color. - whether it be box color or professional I remember one time, many years before hair color - you do not want to apply I went to beauty school, I had my friend it to all of your hair, every time you put box color on my hair. highlights, your hair can become compromised and you make not be able to achieve the color you want. Oftentimes, the ladies I work with and I get clients that come in wanting to go lighter or go from having black hair to platinum blonde, but they’ve been applying black box color to all of their hair for many months, or even many years, and we often say we can’t get them to that platinum blonde they want. Sometimes the clients get mad because they want it right then and there, and only want to pay no more than $100. However, I think I can speak for many licensed hairstylists that the integrity of your hair is of utmost importance. Box color usually have harsh chemicals and can leave hair feeling dry and damaged, whereas a lot of the professional hair color that’s out there today are ammonia free and have special oils in them to add shine, hydration and are more true to color than store box color. Next time you’re feeling that itch to color your hair yourself at home, stop yourself from the “I hope this color turns out ok” feeling and get your hair done at a professional salon! You and your hair will thank me! dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Modern day Super Hero takes charge of her health By Charleen Earley

14

July – September 2017

hile her last name might make her sound like a Super Hero, Regina Lawless IS a real-life Super Hero, in that she’s lost over 70 pounds in less than a year. Born in East Palo Alto, raised in Livermore, Regina did the 20/30 Fast Track to Weight Loss & Health Plan at Delta Valley Health Club in Brentwood in August last year. The 36-year-old lost 23 pounds in 30 days! Regina lives in Brentwood with her husband Al and son Morgan, and the program gave her the jumpstart to control her health and outlook on life. Why did you join the weight loss program? What was your powerful "why?" I began gaining weight in college, but didn't consider it a problem until I gained 60 pounds when I was pregnant. After my son was born, I struggled to lose the weight. With the stress of a family, a busy career and pursuing my graduate degree, my weight continued to increase. It wasn't until I realized the number of health issues I had - from headaches to digestive issues, and the impact they were having on my daily life, that I decided I had to make a change. I had seen the 20/30 Program advertised, but didn't give it much thought, because I had tried and failed at many diets before. Something told me to just give this a try. The fact that they focused on hormone balance and real food, really appealed to me. The group and one-on-one support was also an important aspect for me. I'm so glad I listened to that gut feeling - the program changed my life! How do you feel since you've lost the weight? Physically, I feel better than I did in my early twenties. I have a ton of energy, which helps me get through busy days at work and a long commute. I also sleep much better and wake up fully rested, which was not the case when I was overweight. My health issues are gone now - no chronic headaches, joint pain or digestive issues. The program

also completely changed my relationship with food. I was definitely an emotional eater before going through the program, particularly if I was stressed or anxious about something, food was comforting. Now, I've learned to enjoy food for what it is - energy. I still like certain foods, but don't have the need to overindulge and don't crave foods in the same way. It has been extremely liberating! From a lifestyle perspective, I am a lot more active. I enjoy working out now, which has really helped me manage stress. I also have a new sense of confidence that is evident in how I show up at work and how I engage with others. Doing the incredibly tough work of losing the weight and getting healthy overall, has shown me how strong I really am and that no matter the obstacles, I'm capable of accomplishing what I put my mind to. Why is this program important? If you want to overcome diets and learn how to eat for your overall well-being, this is the program for you. There is no packaged food or counting calories – it’s about real food and reasonable portions. Now don't get me wrong - it takes discipline to avoid certain foods. For me, I lived on sugar. It was hard the first couple of days to strip my diet of refined sugars and excess sodium, but once you overcome the first few days and begin to see results (which happens quickly), you realize that the food recommendations are better for your body and mind. I used to wake up tired and mentally foggy, but after about a week on the program, my cravings for sugar and salty snacks subsided and I began to enjoy the taste of real food. The program also provides weekly sessions where you get to connect and get support from others going through it. The 20/30 Team gives you great advice on how to deal with cravings or overcome setbacks. I often put the needs of my family and work above my own. This program taught me to reverse that and truly take care of myself so I could be better for everyone else.

www.deltalivingmagazine.com

THERE IS NO OFF SEASON! Was your family supportive? My family was very supportive. They were encouraging of me embarking on this journey, however, they were not too keen on following the same diet. So it took extra commitment and willpower on my part to avoid their food and stick with my program. But in the end, I have converted them to some of the healthy recipes I've discovered during the program. They now love my cinnamon banana Paleo pancakes! Any advice you’d like to give? Find a program that works for you and be committed. Nothing worth having is easy. Make the commitment to yourself, plan for the pitfalls and be disciplined along the way - you will see results. Do you incorporate exercise into your daily life? I did not exercise the first 30 days - in fact the program encourages you to just focus on your diet. However, I now exercise regularly. I try to get to the gym 3-4 days per week, which is tough with my work schedule. But I love the boost I get after a workout so I've been creative in finding ways to fit it in. I also walk more at work and take the stairs a lot more often. Losing the weight has inspired me to remain active and to tone up. I now have specific fitness goals that are in reach that I would have never thought achievable before. What has your family and friends said about your weight loss? My family is blown away. My sister-in-law saw a picture of me on Facebook recently and commented that I look like I'm aging in reverse! My co-workers are also shocked by the transformation. Some who I haven't seen in awhile didn't even recognize me. The biggest compliment I've gotten is how young and radiant I look. It's also been nice seeing the changes myself when I look in the mirror. I had to buy a new wardrobe, which has been awesome. My clothes fit so much better and look better on me. It's been amazing! Anything else you'd like to add? This process has changed my life. I’ve regained confidence, restored my health and now I have a new passion for wellness. Recently, I enrolled in a health coaching certification program and am looking forward to supporting other women on their journey to improving their overall health. I learned through this process that I don't have to give in to stress and being aimlessly busy. The biggest surprise for me in all of this is the realization that in order to be successful at weight loss, I had to fundamentally change my mindset, not just change my diet. Having learned that lesson, I am now more intentional about the choices I make in every aspect of my life, not just the food I eat. I discovered that I could take charge of the quality of my life - that it's okay to slow down and truly live. There is no better feeling than that!

The sweet taste of sugar on the Delta By Cha Cha

bicc@bethelisland-chamber.com

I

f you haven’t taken a trip out to Bethel Island in awhile, now might be a good time to visit, beginning with the Sugar Barge Bar & Grill at the Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina. Travel by boat or car, it is without a doubt, an oasis right here on the island with such a long-standing history. The Sugar Barge is named after a legendary cargo vessel, which moored on the very spot for many years. It was originally built in 1925 in Alameda and christened South Shore #1. In 1945, it was renamed M.V. Mokulii, and for many years, she carried freight and sugar from San Francisco, Richmond and Oakland, thus becoming known as the Sugar Barge. She was permanently moored in 1969, where she was purchased by Paul Keeney, Lenny Gomes and Harry Norager. After given a facelift, she became known as the Sugar Barge Restaurant and Lounge.

Unfortunately, she sank twice, putting Lenny and Paul out of business. She now rests at the bottom of the slough filled with many memories. Today’s Sugar Barge is creating its own memories with the owners, The Riggs Family, who purchased the RV park in 1996 and then built and opened the restaurant in 1997. These 50 acres are a delight to all who come to eat or stay in the RV Park. The Sugar Barge Bar & Grill has two levels, which makes this location great for any time of the year. The restaurant is open Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner, all year long. It’s wonderful in warm weather to eat outside on the top deck, watch the boats cruise by, or watch the sea life as sea lions entertain. Tranquil and inviting even if you prefer to sit inside, the large quaint eating area with the beautiful handcrafted bar in view, all while the friendly staff takes great care of you. I personally dined on the scrumptious BLTA salad, fried green beans, and the fish-n-chips. All menu prices were reasonable for an outing starting at $4

and up. And the food, well, let’s just say I will be back for more. Every Saturday they provide live entertainment; one weekend a band, the other a DJ. Plus they offer special nights like “Paint Night,” which seems to be a huge hit here on the island with locals and guests. Sugar Barge also has special themed ticketed, “Club Sugar Barge” events that are a sell out each time - St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Halloween, Comedy Dinner nights and more! The RV Park has 114 RV spaces for rent and camping, which includes a swimming pool. There are RV and boat rentals, a boat launch ramp, boat and RV storage and they have 50 slips that can allow those who travel through the Delta via boat, to slip and dock and enjoy the dining and meet up with friends or to make new ones. Come on out to the Sugar Barge for a beautiful breath-taking sunset overlooking the Delta waters. Visit them at www.sugarbarge.com or call 925.684.9075. How to love someone who’s been abused By Sarah R. Hughes

B

eing with somebody who has been abused is complex. Sometimes you will want to find the person who did this to us, did this to you, and you will not be able to fathom the rage you feel toward a stranger. Sometimes you will be mad at us, or yourself, maybe even sad. We may or may not understand how you are feeling, but please remember that we love you. What we do know is, loving someone who has been abused is not always easy. We also know that you are not them, but sometimes it is hard to make that separation. Fights will happen, and we will try to be strong. But maybe you will yell, or swing your arm in a certain way, and we will freeze. The look in our eyes will be a veil of fear or sadness. We aren’t looking at you, but the abuser instead. Most people who have been the victim of abuse, emotional or physical, understand you are different. With time and gentle touches or soft whispers, we will begin to heal. The cracks between scars where we began to come apart like a ragdoll will reconnect. With enough time, every slammed door will not feel like a rejection, a punishment, or an alarm before a loud and violent storm. These are not your wounds to heal, but we are thankful every day that we wake up and you are still there beside us, helping us and trying to see who we are and who we are trying to become. It is undoubtedly unfair that we have fallen in love with you, a perfect representation of everything tender and restorative after something so damaging. It is equally unfair that sometimes we cut your soft, perfect skin on our sharpened edges without meaning to.We never meant to involve you… wanted to involve you. Many of us would rather stay alone, save ourselves, believing because of the abuse it is better this way. And while it is an unfair situation with heartache to 18

spare, something inside both of us lets us know it is worth it no matter the damage. We are afraid sometimes you will realize our emotional baggage is ours alone, and you will leave. Somehow, your absence would feel more hollow and painful than any insult, any blow, because this feels real, substantial and safe. Still, we would understand if you left. We hold no illusions that somebody else must save us; this is not a Disney movie and nobody here is royalty. Instead we are trying to learn the power of a soft and healing touch in the dark when a nightmare freezes us to our bones and the isolation suffocates us once more. You have been there, and we are trying to show you in whatever way we can that you are not them, that we love you. We have let them go; unfortunately the scars remain and are not so easily forgotten. But every embrace after a fight, every flirtatious look just because, every understanding word, acts like salve on a burn. While we will always have a part of our past that is a dark chapter, you will always be the person who helped turn the page and showed us there are people who can bring light, and reminded us we can bring light too. In 2015, an estimated 1,670 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States. In 2015, Children’s Advocacy Centers around the country served more than 311,000 child victims of abuse, providing victim advocacy and support to these children and their families. A lifetime of following her love of acting: Miss Beadle visits Antioch By Charleen Earley

charleenbearley@gmail.com Photos courtesy of Charlotte Stewart

A

ntioch was graced with a special visitor who takes most Gen X’ers back to the past – we got to meet Charlotte Stewart, who played Miss Beadle on Little House on the Prairie. Cue the music and Laura Ingalls running down the hillside. Cue the memories. Charlotte played a wholesome schoolteacher on the 1970s western drama television series, which ran for nine years – Charlotte starred in four of them, starting in 1984. At the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds for the Antioch Lapidary Club show on Feb. 18 this year, she stood by her newlywed husband Michael Santos and the meteorites he sells. While her role on television was a sweet spinster, until she met the pig farmer, her real life didn’t come close to matching her TV persona – not by a long shot. Her book is titled Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A bad girl’s guide to becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X and Me, with Andy Demsky. Charlotte said she has regrets. “I have tons of them!” said Charlotte, now 75. “I made so many mistakes, I owned up to them, and I wrote about it in my book.” She met her first husband Tim Considine on the set of the Little House on the Prairie. He was the eldest son named Mike Douglas on the hit ABC television series, My Three Sons. “We never had kids, never wanted to,” said Charlotte, known as ‘Char’ to her family and ‘Char Char’ to her friends. “My sister had seven kids, my brother had three. We were very close to my family, nieces and nephews.” Before meeting her husband, and just before her acting career began, she regrets she never went off to college when all her friends did. Born 20

Charlotte Stewart, most known for her role as the schoolteacher 'Miss Beadle' on Little House on the Prairie directed by David Lynch, wrote a memoir titled, Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A Bad Girl's Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X and Me, where she reveals her wild life of sex, drugs and addiction.

in Yuba City, CA, at age 17, she headed to L.A. “I was not a good student, I just wanted to roller skate all the time!” she said. “I was not interested in school, I was a big show off! I had to be the center of attention, I was a skater and always wanted to show off!” “So when it came time to go to college and all my friends were going to Berkeley or Stanford, I saw this ad in a 1958 teen magazine and on the back cover was an ad for the Pasadena Playhouse,” she added. “I cut the coupon, mailed it in and I was accepted. I told my parents after I was accepted!” She figured they’d be upset with her. “Truth is, my parents were so pleased that I had a plan!” recalled Charlotte. She got her first job at age 19, working in a movie called Damaged Goods (1961). “It was a teenage love story, which led to a Loretta Young show and

From the description of her book, “Charlotte, with Andy Demsky, reveal a no-holds-barred, heart-breaking and ultimately joyful account of 50 years in film and television … (her book) offers a backstage pass to Hollywood’s cocaine-fueled glory years in the 1970s, and includes Charlotte’s celebrated work as Mary X in David Lynch’s cult classic film, Eraserhead, as well as her later work as Betty Briggs in the highly-rated television series, Twin Peaks.” Little House on the Prairie ran 50 episodes long – after four years on the show, she left, was remarried to Jordon Haun and did a movie with Neal Young. “He wrote on the back of my book, ‘I didn’t know Miss Beadle knew so much about sex, drugs and rock-nroll!’” she said. Plant Upkeep By: Debbie Gatt

debbie@indooreden.com

N

ow that you have all these beautiful plants in your home, how do you keep them clean? A plant needs more than just watering and proper lighting. You should also dust and spritz the leaves to keep them shiny and healthy. You may see leaf shine products in the plant section of large depot stores or hardware stores that say they are safe to use. Some of them are aerosols or petroleum based and will actually cause plant damage when exposed to hot temperatures or sunny windows. Plant leaves do not like them. It’s like spraying oil onto your skin then sitting out in the sun for a while. You will get burnt and dehydrated. They are not a necessary expense. Keep it simple and natural. Keeping the dust off the leaves make your plants look healthy and keeps away the plant bugs. You will need a nice dry terry cloth towel that can be washed in hot soapy water when you are finished. This way you can reuse it for an environmentally safe way of cleaning. To dust the leaves, place the leaf in between the towel, so both sides can be swiped at the same time. You’ll want to start all the way down by the stem. This is where the most dust collects. Gently wipe the leaves and bring out the natural shine without chemicals. Your plant will love you. This should be done once a month. In between the dusting of leaves, you want to spritz them with a distilled water solution. Fill a standard size spray bottle with distilled water or rainwater and two drops of liquid dish soap. Not just any type of dish soap. You want a phosphate free and mild dish soap. Most of the 26

July – September 2017

time I use Ivory original dish soap with no added scents. Ivory is more mild than other dish soaps. If you have plants near the kitchen, they may have an oily film on them. For those plants, you can use two drops of Dawn liquid soap to cut the grease in a standard size spray bottle of distilled water. This keeps the leaves clean and hydrated. Spritzing the leaves can be done about every ten days. You don’t want to over water your plant leaves. Another trick of the trade to keep plants looking fresh is to periodically trim any dried tipped leaves or dying leaves. You want to use very sharp disinfected scissors that would be used for your plants only. You can use rubbing alcohol to clean

the scissors after each plant with another terry cloth towel. Use a very small amount of alcohol to avoid any vapors. When you trim off a tip, trim it in the shape of the leaf end, or cut at an angle. This will make it less noticeable that it has been cut. Remove any ugly leaves by easily pulling or peeling off. Buying a container that will hold all your necessary supplies will make caring for your plants a minimal task. You should have scissors, a bottle of 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol, terry cloth towels, liquid dish soap, and a spray bottle to fill with distilled water. This way everything is in one handy place. Keep the dust bunnies away! dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Belatedly, I applied to Corning Community College, hundreds of miles away, precisely because I needed distance from a circle of rule-breaking friends. I rented a room and buckled down, making Deans List and transferring second year to the State University of New York at Albany. I worked my way through school as a groundskeeper, movie usher, library aide, dishwasher, short order cook, soda jerk and, senior year, residence counselor earning room, board and tuition. From a gentleman’s C habituate and high school joker I had matured to a cum laude graduate and responsible student advisor. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Returning to square one, what’s a good teacher worth? Given my turnaround, I’d say priceless. Firstly, teachers recognized the good underneath my acting out. In believing in me, they fostered a readiness for me believing in me. Secondly, by their passion they lit my innate but dormant pilot light of curiosity. I awakened to a penchant for life-long learning. If teaching is, as someone said, nine tenths encouragement, then Robert Frost’s estimation rings true; “I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” One could do worse than being an awakener. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

A

s a wordsmith, I’d like to use the metaphor of ending a chapter and starting a new one – and in this case, I’m talking about Delta Living and Purrfect Pets Magazine! It’s official, Glenda Kugler is the new publisher and owner and I’m forever the founder. This issue begins the new chapter. 34

July – September 2017

It’s been a beautiful five-year-run and I know, with Glenda at the helm, the two magazines will continue for another five hundred MORE years, I’m not exaggerating. As I move forward as editor for now, I couldn’t be happier. From starting these publications from pure scratch to turning the magazines sideways (literally, horizontal format) it’s been a rollercoaster ride of fun, and like most small business owners can attest, it’s also been a labor of love and passion mixed in with blood, sweat and tears.

My goal in selling the magazines was to focus more on teaching journalism, because it’s what I’ve worked up to all these years. I also wanted to continue my freelance writing as well, so all-in-all, this new chapter for both Glenda and I, was a win-win. Now let me introduce you to the new owner – drum roll – give a warm East County welcome to the publishing world, Glenda Kugler. Born in Kansas, raised in Nebraska, Glenda moved to Antioch, CA in 2014 because she got engaged to her high school classmate. Sweet, right? She’s 52-years-young, has a 33-year-old son Randy in Omaha, Nebraska, and she’s been taking care of her nephew for the last 12 years – he’s Special Needs. She’s now living her dream. “I have always wanted to have a magazine from the time I used to sit on the Nebraska Film and TV www.deltalivingmagazine.com

board, and did modeling and acting events, etc.” she said. “There was always some kind of story or pictures that I thought the others left behind. Kind of cliquey area, but I wanted to be the one who would show people the unsung story or pictures.” “I was handed a great opportunity and ran with it,” she added. Jumping in, both feet first, Glenda’s been busy successfully creating partnerships through advertising, connecting with local businesses, attending mixers, giving talks at speaking engagements and searching out great story ideas. “I have always worked well under pressure when meeting deadlines,” she said. “So many new doors have opened. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories.” In her spare time, Glenda does rescue work. She has one of the biggest hearts for dogs, and really, all animals. “I own Boston Terriers; they are my favorite,” she said. “I have had a lot of dogs big and small, but a Boston is so loyal and have such great personalities. I say they’re like Lay’s Potato Chips, you can’t have just one!” “I believe animals are the next thing to Godliness,” she added. “They are all very spiritual.” Glenda’s rescue mission was something she fell into. “I started out as a certified medical assistant at age 23, then took courses to become a lab assistant doing research, send-outs and working in a trauma unit,” she said. “Then when I got custody of my nephew (due to the awful schedule I followed), I worked for a local newspaper as a consultant designing ads, writing and planned events for the paper. This lead to doing my rescue events for animal rescue awareness for five years. I was also a sous chef for three years, because I love cooking, and did events www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Almost There Travel Agency, Destination Unknown = Paradise By Tammy Larsen Travel Agent/Owner

I

decided it was time for me to own my own business, after getting laid off of my job. I attended Los Medanos College’s Travel Program, where the teachers worked in the travel industry and educated us on an ever-changing industry. The experiences and knowledge they shared were important to me; it’s one of the reasons why I became the success that I am today. Unfortunately, after working for another agency and learning how to run a travel business, the economy started to decline. Fortunately, that is when I took the chance and went out on my own and opened my business, even though others were losing their jobs, businesses were closing and homes were lost. I opened my doors in 2009 in downtown Antioch at 506 West 2nd Street. I enjoy having an office in the Historic Rivertown District. My future goals, as I get older, are to have the agency run without me there, because I love to travel with my friends and family. I only hire enthusiastic, like-minded employees who share in my vision of Almost There Travel. The best part about owning my business is knowing that I have control over 36

July – September 2017

how I run it. I can participate in any event and do not have to have anyone dictate how or why I would want to participate. I promote myself and my business using my own creativity and partner with my travel representatives to take my business in a direction that appeals to me. My customer service and enthusiasm set me apart from the others in my line

of work. When speaking with me, you can tell I am passionate about what I do to make your travel experience memorable. I treat your vacation like it was my vacation. I continue to keep up with the changes and learn new things within the industry by attending travel seminars, doing ship inspections, watching webinars,

asking our travel representatives to come in and do training on their products and so much more. We are experienced travelers who have been to many destinations and, when traveling, the little details are more important than you think. Paving his future from the steps of his past By Charleen Earley charleenbearley@gmail.com

J

ason Stanley is not only following in his dad’s footsteps, but his grandfather’s as well when it comes to his profession – he’s a third generation grader and paver – and started out as a toddler. “My dad put me on a tractor skip loader when I was six. When I was four, he made my own little rake and shortened the pick handle. He taught me how to drive a truck when I was eight!” said Jason, age 33 and owner of Sunrise Grading & Paving. “I love doing what I do,” he added. “I like doing a good job and seeing that it’s done correctly.” Jason and his crew of five excavate for building pads, parking lots, driveways and private roads, and fixes road damage with street patching for both private and commercial contracts. “We cover all of the Bay Area, extending south to Silicon Valley and Bakersfield, and to north towards Fairfield, Sacramento and Redding,” said Jason, who was born in Pittsburg, and lives in Brentwood with his wife Sylvia and their four kids. Running a business of his own means sometimes logging in 14 to 17 hour days. “I do my own estimating and I go out there and run the jobs,” said Jason. “If you want your business to be successful, you have to put in the work!” When he thinks about where God has placed him in life, he thanks his parents. “I lost my mom in 2009 and my dad in 2010; they were only 65-years-old. I thank God for blessing me with beautiful parents, my dad taught me so much,” said Jason. “God walks us through 40

our path and this is what he chose for me to do.” When he’s not working, Jason heads to the gym or he’s at his son’s baseball and football games. “I go boating, hunting and fishing with the family too,” he added. What sets his company apart from the rest is his service quality. “We take pride in our work and our goal is to provide quality service in our workmanship and our response time,” said Jason. “I like to see my customers get a good job, because that’s the way things should be.” He runs his business like he runs his life. “I live my life by doing unto others what I’d like them to do for me; it speaks to my work,” said Jason. “I wouldn’t want someone doing shoddy work for me or be dishonest. I give people respect, because life is short and we all need to enjoy our time here.” For the last 15 years, Gretchen Cater has hired Jason for all of her grading and paving needs. She lives in Texas, but has property in the Bay Area. “He’s very fair in his pricing and does excellent, quality work,” said Gretchen. “Jason has gotten bigger and better over the years, and sometimes I run into vendors who raise their prices because of that. Not Jason. He treats me like I’m the most important person on his list! I’m not his biggest client, but he still makes time for me.” “I’ve even bid against him sometimes, and he always comes out very competitive,” added Gretchen. “But what tips the scale for me is that his customer service goes above and beyond. Jason is a good businessman, and he has a real heart for people. He cares.” dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com
