ou might have seen her ads on billboards and mailers posing with her beautifulyet-retired quarter horse “Chance” otherwise known as Big Boy, but for Lori Abreu, who is a Listing Specialist, a Buyer’s Agent and her company offers Property Management Delta Ranches and Homes, she believes “Happiness comes when you believe in what you are doing, know what you are doing and love what you are doing.” Born and raised in San Leandro, CA, Lori moved with her husband in 1986 to East Contra Costa County and loves everything about her job. “I love meeting people, talking to people, learning about their lives, their goals, their dreams and most of all, making their dreams a reality,” said Lori, who has been in the industry the last 16 years. “I typically work between 70 to 80 hours a week, until the job gets done, and I don't quit until then,” she said. “Even with the tough deals, clients need to be satisfied with our services, so with every single transaction, I have an automatic survey set up to our client’s email, and I have never received less than a perfect score of 5 stars!” Giving back to the community is important to Lori and her team. “We donate time and money to the local schools, Veterans and other many good causes through Rotary.” “I support charities that help our community, especially children,” she added. “I want young girls to see a role model of someone who can be a great mom, married for 29 years, live for every moment and still be a successful business owner.” At the end of the day, Lori is grateful for everything in her life. “I’m blessed with a job that I absolutely love, I have a great husband and two amazing daughters, and I don’t take any of it for granted,” said Lori. “I love to laugh with my friends, spend time with my animals, be at the home that we built ourselves 15 years ago and just so completely grateful for all of life’s adventures and opportunities.”

ayor Bob Taylor and his overstuffed dog named Rufus, proudly led the dog parade at the free annual Bark in the Park event held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016. It’s an event he started four years ago, and it’s been met with adorable success year after year. “We had a beautiful new park downtown and he wanted us to make people aware that it was there and available. He also suggested we have a dog parade,” said JoAnn Klement, one of the event organizers and chair of Brentwood Neighborhood Committee (BNC). With 27 vendors and sponsors, free raffle prizes, 59 dogs in the parade, country music, a K9 unit demonstration and salutes from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 10789, JoAnn sees the annual event as ongoing. “We don’t anticipate it ending any time soon. It is too much fun!” said JoAnn, of Brentwood. “We also had dog owners who had their dogs with them in the park just to check out the fun. Hopefully next year they will participate.” For the parade portion, costumes are optional. “We love having the dogs in costume, but costumes are optional, so please don’t let a lack of costume or a dog who doesn’t like to wear one, keep you from participating in the parade next year,” said JoAnn. Of course the dogs in costumes are so much fun.” Costumes included pink ballerina tutus, jail black and white stripes, even spray-painted pink and lime green hair - safe pet paint, of course. The event is free each year, compliments of all involved. Most vendors donated free raffle gifts, even the San Jose Sharks and Golden State Warriors. “The Brentwood Neighborhood Committee, with the assistance of the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department and our sponsors absorb all the costs for BARK,” said JoAnn. “We want it to be a free event for ev-

Excitement mounted when K9 officers Shipilov and Rezendes (and his dog Marco) acquainted residents with their Shepherd after the parade. “They also did a short aggression demonstration,” said JoAnn. tional Anthem and the Contra Costa County Animal Services provided their Licensing Amnesty Program for the past two years,” said JoAnn. She said that through the Licensing Amnesty, several pet owners have been able to take advantage of the program and save on their late fees. “We also benefit by having more dogs licensed,” she added. While this year was considered a barking success, it carried with it a sad undertone for JoAnn. “Sadly we lost our 11-year-old Australian Shepherd and Husky mix, Brady about three months ago,” she said. “BARK was a little bittersweet for me this year, because Brady had been there right from the start.” Visit them on Facebook at Brentwood Bark in the Park. roviding protection for our pets in hot weather is critical. Pets, like people, are susceptible to the effects of extreme heat. This resource outlines the effects of hot weather on dogs, cats and rabbits. Pets in hot weather: Dogs One of the most life-threatening mistakes people can make is to leave a dog in a vehicle in hot weather. Dogs can’t perspire, as humans do, to cool themselves off via evaporation, so they have to pant to cool themselves. If the air that they are taking in is too hot (as it is in a parked car in hot weather), then panting has little cooling effect and the dog quickly overheats. Many people think their dog will be OK if they leave the windows open, but even with the windows wide open, the car can quickly become hot enough to cause heatstroke, brain damage, and even death. Your pet may pay dearly for even a few minutes spent in a sweltering car. And you should never let your dog ride in an open pickup truck, but it’s especially dangerous in hot
weather, since truck beds are often dark colors, which get very hot. Please leave your pets at home during hot weather.
Pets in hot weather A little empathy goes a long way in protecting our pets from extreme weather. If it’s too hot for us to stay comfortable in the car, in the yard or on a walk, it’s even hotter for our furry friends.
Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting that does not resolve as the pet rests, increasing distress, a tongue color that is dark red to almost purple, weakness or collapse, hyper-salivation, vomiting and labored breathing. If you suspect a dog or cat is suffering from heat stroke, move him to a cooler environment immediately and apply cool water to the abdomen, ears and foot pads. Don’t pour ice water over the whole animal, submerge him in a tub of cold water or cover him in a cold, wet blanket. Once he is stable, get him to a vet as quickly as possible, even if he seems to be cooling down and his temperature seems normal. I’ve had Mr. Morris for about four years now, but have no idea of his age. He appeared in the horse barn one day looking a bit out of place - obviously a domestic and not a feral even though he was not neutered at the time. The feral cats we had around the farm are skittish and slim in build. This guy would just sit there like a big booby who wanted to be fed and petted - not hand shy at all. He was my horse’s buddy. He stayed as an outside cat for about six months when one day he disappeared. About two days later I found him terribly slashed up with big gashes on his leg and underside. I later learned we had a bobcat in the area that was killing all the small outside animals, but Mr. Morris managed to escape. I took him inside and confined him while he healed. Now he is a protected house kitty and seems to be quite fine with it. He had to get used to my dogs and other house cats, but it didn’t take too long and now he hugs the food bowl working on the plumpness of his figure. - Eloine Chapman

re you tired of cleaning up mounds of fur off your couch, floor, pillows, clothes and basically everything? Are you allergic to dander, but still want a dog to call your own? Your seasonal allergies are starting to creep up on you and the last thing you need is a dog that will add to those watery eyes, sneezes and sniffles. All hope is not lost. There are “hypoallergenic” dog breeds available for adoption. No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but there are breeds that shed very little fur. From all different sizes and coats, here are our top choices for the breeds with almost nondetectible fur shed.
7. Poodle
Coming in a variety of sizes and colors, this breed is a wonderful choice for people suffering from dander allergies. With a Poodle, your nostrils and eyes will be clear and free. Who wouldn’t want that?
6. Portuguese Water Dog What’s interesting about breed is that not only are lergenic, but they’re also

4. Border Terrier
These pups are affectionate and highly trainable. Their coats are short, harsh and dense and may need raking weekly with a stripping knife. They require vigorous exercise, which is great for you or the kids (if you have them)!
These dogs do not shed as much as normal canines do, but they do actually require the dead or loose hair to be picked from their bodies twice per year. This is called stripping the coat. This isn’t much maintenance for a lifetime of unconditional love and companionship, especially since this breed is extremely affectionate.
Gentle, loving and hypoallergenic: this is the perfect combination for a potential dog owner with allergies. They’re small, but pack a punch when strangers are around! Depending how long you want to keep their silky coats, they do require daily brushing to prevent tangling their fur.
2. Shih Tzu
These lion looking pups can be the perfect companion because they easily adapt to people as well as their environment. Their coats shed very minimally, so no cleaning or sneezing! The do not require affection in excess, so if this seems like the breed for you, adopt!
9. Bichon Frise
This dog comes equipped with a curly double coat. Their active, playful disposition is perfect for any person. This pup is most definitely compatible with allergy sufferers because their shedding is almost nonexistent, so if this hound holds your heart, it is time to adopt.

This slender and graceful breed only requires weekly brushing to keep the fine coat, short and glossy. Their shedding is almost non-existent, and are best suited for adults or families with older children. They are fragile, which isn’t ideal for smaller kids.
