From the Head of School and Board Chair

Dear Latin Community, You are excellent.

We talk a lot about excellence at Latin. That can translate in many ways: how we bring it to our students through their daily educational and character-building experiences across campus; what we do to foster it among our teachers and staff; and how we reflect the high standard — a driving force for our Founders — which continues to be a priority for every Latin family. Excellence means something different for everyone fortunate to be part of this incredible community.

Throughout this report, you’ll read stories of people contributing to our community and their impact on our students and their families. We are privileged to lead this institution along with our fellow Administrators and Trustees. The past few years have brought unexpected layers, but you have shown up for our school and made it possible for us to navigate the unpredictability. We have come out stronger, and we continue to succeed in our goal of providing a world-class learning environment for every student.

Thank you for the many ways you make excellence possible at Latin. We are universally impacted by philanthropy. From record-setting Latin Fund support, to countless volunteer hours, to simply being all-in, your generosity equips us to not only do what we do, but to continue improving how we do it. It allows us the flexibility to meet our students where they are, while encouraging them to be their best selves. Our educators have the resources they need to be the best teachers possible — both in the content of their lessons and in empowering them to teach with genuine care, creativity, and an unparalleled dedication to their students. Thank you.

Our community is phenomenal. Your investment in Latin enables us to continue to support our most valuable assets — our students and our teachers — on our distinctive campus.

Read on and see how.

A Letter from the 2021–22 Latin Fund Chairs

When we made our first Latin Fund gift as a new family in 2017, we gave out of gratitude. Five years later, we continue to give gratefully, but we also consider our support to be an investment: in our children, in Latin, and in excellence.

As the 2021–22 Latin Fund Chairs, we boldly asked every member of our community to support Latin’s excellence. We were wonderfully overwhelmed by your response. Because of your generosity, the Latin Fund raised a record-breaking $2,053,164, with 80% of our parents joining in the effort. We especially want to recognize Latin’s newest families, who collectively contributed an unprecedented $241,854 to the Latin Fund. You are an inspiring new generation of Hawks! We cannot thank you enough.

Since its founding, Latin was built upon a tradition of philanthropy. Today, a strong Latin Fund is its backbone. Your Latin Fund gifts are used every year to sustain excellence and advance Latin’s Mission. Your support allows school leadership to say “yes” to opportunities that have a direct and immediate impact on our students, our faculty, and our community.

Your support is also a demonstration of trust. You trust that your gift is thoughtfully invested where it is needed most. You trust that faculty and staff have opportunities to voice their needs and make requests that benefit students. You trust that the Latin Fund ensures that our children receive a world-class education.

While the dollars you raised for the Latin Fund are critical to the school’s budget, your participation is equally important. We are one Latin community and every gift from every family matters. You demonstrated that you are all-in, willing to give back to the school that gives so much to our families.

To all who joined in supporting this year’s Latin Fund, thank you. Latin’s excellence relies on the commitment of our entire community and we are inspired by your generosity. Your support is an act of gratitude, philanthropy, and investment, and you are essential to our success. By going above and beyond for the Latin Fund, you embody what it means to be a Charlotte Latin Hawk. We are grateful.

PROJECTS

Here are just a few examples of capital expenses that the Latin Fund supported for our students, faculty, and campus in the 2021–22 school year:

Art Display Walls

The Latin Fund is an essential part of our school’s budget. Tuition covers 85% of the true cost of educating each Latin student, so philanthropic gifts to the Latin Fund help bridge the gap to ensure that school leadership can say “yes” to the opportunities, tools, and resources that give students the full Latin experience.

Latin is home to talented artists of all ages, and we proudly display our students’ work. The Latin Fund supported new art display walls in the Inlustrate Orbem Building and will refresh the art walls in the KnightDickson Library and the Claudette B. Hall Lower School over time.

Belk Gym Bleachers

With approximately 85 percent of students in Grades 7–12 participating in at least one sport, Athletics

are an important part of life at Latin. In the summer of 2021, Latin replaced the bleachers in our beloved Belk Gym, ensuring that our student-athletes and the community that rallies behind them have access to incredible facilities.

Classroom Furniture Replacements

No detail is too small when it comes to Latin’s commitment to excellence, and that includes classroom furniture. The Latin Fund helps support regular upgrades to classroom furniture, helping to create an ageappropriate environment to enhance learning, concentration, and collaboration.

Technology

After a year of hybrid learning, technology at Latin needed a refresh in 2021–22. The Latin Fund helped provide resources like new iPads, laptops, and classroom projectors to enhance learning. The Latin Fund also helped supply new computers in the Fab Lab and engineering classrooms.

A New Bus

As many of our Kindergarten Hawks will tell you, riding the bus to and from Latin is a highlight of the day. In a typical school year, more than 550 students ride buses daily. In 2021, the Latin Fund helped purchase a new bus to keep our students safe on the road.

PURSUING THEIR POWER “And” Students

In addition to the excellent academic offerings at Latin, Leslie and Mitchell Wickham ’87 wanted their daughters to explore a breadth of activities so that they could learn more about themselves and their individual passions. Outside of the classroom, Amelie poured her time into sports, musical theater, and Ecybermission. Cora ’24 has enjoyed Girls Who Code and AP Computer Science, while playing Varsity Soccer. She also loves the peace she finds through visual arts. Marisol ’26 has gotten a taste of civil discourse activism, served as captain of the MS Soccer team, and enjoys writing songs and lyrics on her guitar.

NEEDS Operational

Here are just a few operational examples of how the Latin Fund supported our students, faculty, and campus in the 2021–22 school year:

Financial Aid

Gifts to the Latin Fund make possible many critical enhancements that are visible and tangible on our campus. What you don’t see, however, is equally as important. Every year, the Latin Fund supports behindthe-scenes initiatives and investments that keep Latin a world-class institution.

The Latin Fund helps support the school’s expanded financial aid efforts, keeping Latin accessible to excellent students who will thrive in and strengthen our community.

Moderate Tuition Increases

The Latin Fund allows the school to operate from a position of financial strength while moderating tuition increases.

Professional Development Budget

Charlotte Latin is dedicated to providing employees with continuing education and professional development opportunities. The Latin Fund supports these endeavors every year, keeping our faculty and staff the best in their field.

Parent Organizations

New this year, the Latin Fund provides the budgets for the Latin Arts Association and the Booster Club, allowing members to fully focus on supporting Latin’s extraordinary Arts and Athletics programs.

In April 2022, a group of faculty and staff attended the Global Educators Conference in San Diego, California. A collaboration between the offices of Global Studies and DEI, this professional development opportunity allowed attendees to meet other Global/ DEI educators and learn best practices in the field. CLS Lower School faculty members Meghan Rinehart and Avery Teichman presented a session entitled “Books that Build Belonging: Amongst Colleagues FOR Students” about the Children’s Literature Book Club they have created for Lower School faculty.

GENEROSITY

FLY DAY began in 2018 as Latin’s festive, annual day of giving and has since become a key driver of dollars and participation for the Latin Fund. Held each May, FLY DAY is a 24-hour campus event encouraging parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, and friends to come together, celebrate the school, and support the Latin Fund.

FLY DAY V was a total knockout, with a record-breaking 1,685 donors raising $327,576 for the 2021–22 Latin Fund. Continuing our FLY DAY tradition of honoring Latin’s exceptional faculty and staff, volunteers delivered 1,400 cookies to Latin employees.

Alumni stepped into the ring to claim Best in Class bragging rights, parents engaged in some friendly competition for the Parent Participation Challenge, and a $45,000 Challenge match kept our donors motivated well into the evening hours. Thank you to our Latin community for leaving it all in the ring!

From funding the long-term growth of critical programs to providing significant dollars for scholarships and financial aid, Latin’s Endowment ensures the school’s ability to meet the needs of our students now, and for generations to come.

Securing a Strong Future for Latin

The impact made by donors to our Endowment lasts forever — building long-term assets while contributing annual dollars to budgeted expenses. In many instances, it also provides a way to honor cherished members of the Latin community with funds established in their name. The growth of our Endowment has been a cornerstone of the school’s financial health, and remains an important part of preserving the legacy of a Latin education.

Two endowments established during the 2021–22 school year honor beloved members of Latin’s community. Read on to learn how these funds will benefit Latin students for generations to come.

There are few people at Latin who have had a larger impact on the growth of our Endowment than Fletcher Gregory. Appointed the school’s Chief Financial Officer in 1998, he has stewarded the Endowment with care and prudence — overseeing a staggering increase from $4.2M when he began to $43M today.

As passionate as Fletcher has been about Latin’s financial health, he has also developed a love for the school’s Service Learning program. Service Learning was his daughter, Mary Salem’s ’06 life’s work — and, in her memory, has remained a priority of the entire Gregory family. As Fletcher prepared to retire after 31 years of devotion to Latin, it was only fitting that the Board of Trustees pay tribute to these two areas by establishing the Gregory Endowment for Service Learning. The Latin community —

from current and former Board members to grandparents and retired colleagues — joined to invest in this fund to honor Fletcher’s legacy at the school.

A pillar of Charlotte Latin’s Mission, the Service Learning experiential education model fosters self-confidence, self-awareness, and empathy. As students engage with their larger community through tangible outreach, they are taught the critical thinking and project management skills that prepare them to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The Gregory Endowment for Service Learning ensures the continued growth of this program, meaningfully impacting the character development of future generations of Latin students.

The Power of Endowment: SUNNY’s LEGACY

There’s not one person who doesn’t wish she was still here today — shining brightly on the world, on Charlotte, on Latin, and most importantly on her children. And no one would trade places with the family, friends, and community who miss her terribly. But they merged their grief with the joy that was Sunny, and they looked forward. They knew they had to make a difference — in a place she loved. And Sunny’s Legacy was born.

Established in 2022, Sunny’s Legacy honors the life and vivacious spirit of Sara “Sunny” Harris Hutchinson, a beloved graduate of Latin’s Class of 1993. Sunny personified the radiant sunshine and love that inspired her name. She was the epitome of selflessness, empathy, and loyalty. Sunny’s purpose was people — genuinely caring for them, attentively listening to them, and deeply loving them.

The endowment that funds Sunny’s Legacy, created by her family and supported by many who knew her, ensures the long-term sustainability of the program. Sunny’s Legacy includes two components that will touch the lives of young people as they honor her light and memory: Sunny Scholars and Sunny’s Honor.

Sunny Scholars

Sunny Scholars is a marquee Charlotte Latin scholarship designed to fully support students who exemplify Sunny’s character and qualities, but who would otherwise not be able to afford a Latin education. The long-term goal is to fund all school-related expenses for two recipients per grade in Grades 6–12 through graduation. In its first year of implementation — Fall 2022 — we welcome two students to the Middle School as Sunny Scholars. Sunny’s legacy and the vision of her family are coming to fruition through these students and support for the endowment.

Sunny’s Honor

The second and more outward-facing element of Sunny’s Legacy is Sunny’s Honor. Among Latin’s most cherished peer honors, it is awarded annually at graduation to a senior who makes a positive difference in the lives of others. The first Sunny’s Honor was awarded at Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 22, 2022, to a ray of sunshine herself, Mary Schleusner ’22.

Mary Schleusner ’22, the first Sunny’s Honor recipient, is at home on both the basketball court and the Homecoming Court.

The citation read at graduation reflected the similarities between Sunny and Mary. “Mary, your classmates chose you. You connect with your peers through your kindness, integrity, and positivity. Your passion for people invigorates those around you. You make the world a ‘Sunny’ place. If such a person exists to match Sunny’s sanguine character and commitment to excellence, it must be you. You exude energy and joy while walking through the hallways, constantly making people laugh, and making friends with all kinds of people. Whether in the classroom or the quad, peers are drawn to your infectious laugh and your ability to make everyone feel included. Involved in Athletics, SALT, Sisters, and many more activities at Latin, while taking a rigorous course load, you are a leader for good who brings us all together. You are the sun of the Class of 2022. Latin would not be itself without YOU.”

Impact of OPERATING GIFTS

Latin’s Commitment to DEI and Leadership

Thanks to contributions to Latin’s Operating Fund, the school is able to invest in marquee programs that reflect our Core Values while differentiating our educational experience and enriching our community.

Philanthropic support of these programs helps sustain and grow their impact — while ensuring the school continues to prepare our students to be good citizens of the world.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Rooted in Latin’s Core Values, our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program celebrates the talents, perspectives, and engagement of every individual in the school community. It is critical to the educational experience that each student feels a sense of belonging. Investments in Latin’s DEI initiatives make that aspiration a reality by providing resources and flexibility to meet our students where they are while promoting learning opportunities that encourage critical thinking.

Program Highlights:

• Latin Fellows Program: This year, two teachers participated in the Latin Fellows Program, a co-teaching experience that provides two years of guidance, training, and experience for novice educators from underrepresented groups.

• Mosaic Night: One of six student-led clubs focused on DEI, the Mosaic Club hosted the annual Mosaic Night in April — in person this year — celebrating the diversity of the Latin community and featuring a tribute to the longtime advisor, retiring Maria Klein.

• Partnering in Professional Development: Eight members of Latin’s Offices of Global Studies and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion partnered to attend the Global Educators Benchmark Group (GEBG) Global Educators Conference in San Diego, California, bringing model practices in the field of global education back to Latin.

Leadership Development: Latin Leads with Honor

Latin’s leadership development curriculum is a distinguished and visionary program rooted in the school’s Core Values. Students benefit from leadership lessons beginning in Grade 2, establishing and nurturing their skills while promoting a shared understanding of leadership in our community. Latin Leads with Honor differentiates Latin from its peer schools, encouraging leadership as a lifelong characteristic of our students with servant leadership as the ideal model.

Program Highlights:

• Middle School Partnership: Ann Thompson Brock ’81, Director of Leadership Development, partnered with Todd Ballaban, Head of Middle School, to pilot an innovative 7th Grade Leadership Lab elective. Based on the Leads with Honor framework, the lab highlights and fosters students’ everyday citizen leadership potential. The experiential, character-building program made a significant impact in helping these students assimilate to real-time life in the Middle School during COVID.

• New Leadership Initiatives: Funded through a three-year grant from the Chapman Family Foundation, this initiative expands the leadership curriculum by promoting listening, leadership, and caring throughout the Latin community. The integrated curriculum for students in Grades 2–12 teaches the skills and courage to care. In addition, faculty and staff, and eventually parents, will participate in the Our Community Listens course to learn empathetic listening skills that enhance and encourage relationship building.

Aspire to be Seen.

We feel most valued when we are seen for who we are at our core. The best way to achieve this with children is to teach them to celebrate themselves. When we feel good and secure about ourselves, we learn to celebrate others — whether they are the same as us or different.

A 2021 Lower School collaboration among DEI representatives and volunteers, the Visual Arts Department, Lower School Librarians, and Latin Arts Association created and installed Aspire to be Seen — a display and series of fourteen city buses and five subway trains along each Lower School corridor. Each bus or train window featured a photo of every member of the Lower School community peering out their windows. “I am Wes,” it says above one first-grade friend’s smiling face. And below, “I like myself because I am a good climber.” In general, we want others to know things about us that they cannot see. Students partnered as “subject” and “photographer.” They learned to recognize an external quality and to ask about an internal identity.

“I am Wes. I like myself because I am a good climber.”

The 7th Grade Leadership Lab fosters everyday citizen leadership potential.

A Letter from the Director of Philanthropy

“What do you love most about Latin?”

Our team asks many generous donors this question throughout the school year. The answers may vary, but a common theme is how our community creates an environment where our students can excel in their chosen pursuits.

At the Upper School Honors & Awards program in May, I was struck by how Latin’s culture allows each member of our community to carve their own path. Thoughtfully-crafted summaries of each student recipient highlight the diversity of what it means to excel at Latin. These students and educators are remarkable, and their experiences at Latin allow them to flourish. Some examples:

• A leader on the football field and in the Fab Lab was celebrated for his joyous love of learning.

• A talented artist recognized for her community service, giving more than 900 hours to animal rescue.

• A Morehead-Cain Scholar honored for his accomplishments in playing the clarinet and lacrosse, as well as a founding role in a student-led organization focused on mental health.

• An Upper School teacher tirelessly devoted to reaching her students in the classroom and as a mentor to numerous student-led organizations.

This is merely a snapshot of the individuals celebrated that day by their classmates, faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, siblings, and Latin alumni. It was remarkable to come together to hear the many ways Latin impacts our students and teachers, and how they, in turn, make a lasting difference in our community. The theme continued days later at Commencement, when we graduated a Senior Class who will be remembered as much for their accomplishments, as for their depth of character.

Philanthropy makes every part of our school better. Everything you give to Latin champions students as they navigate their unique journeys. Thank you for making countless options possible as they determine what excellence means to them. Your generosity enables Latin to be a place of opportunity for all students — which is what I love most about Charlotte Latin.

REUNION WEEKEND 2022

When Hawks Come Home

Finally, our alumni were able to come back to campus in April to join a Reunion Weekend celebration — years in the making.

The skies were crystal blue for the Alumni Way dedication at the McIntosh Leadership Center, where we celebrated the more than 90 alumni who supported the Vision2020 Campaign with their philanthropic leadership.

Later that evening, we welcomed our Hawks home in the Beck Student Activities Center, where all enjoyed good food and fellowship while listening to live music from Grayson Foster ’12 and his band.

50 Years of Belk Gym Latin has expanded and evolved over the years. Still, some things never change, like Buck Bryant ’79 leading Lower Schoolers under the covered walkways toward the gym, seniors sitting around the Japanese Garden, and the many bookbags outside Belk Gym.

Hawks, including Beth and Carl ’78 Belk, gathered for lunch to celebrate 50 years of Belk Gym. Even with a new court and brand new bleachers, there is something classic about our beloved Belk Gym that will never change. Some even say it smells and sounds the same!

With the energy magnified by the night’s Carolina v. Duke Final Four game, it was great to have Hawks back on campus

2021–22 Alumni Governing Board Chair

Charlotte Latin’s Alumni community is fortified with more than 4,700 Hawks living across the United States and around the world. We are all unique people called to different pursuits. No matter the direction our alums take in life after Latin, we share the common ground that we graduated from this wonderful school on a strong foundation built on character, moral courage, selfless service, excellence, and honor.

You will read more about how alumni giving has a real impact on the life of Latin today. Every year, our battle cry for the Latin Fund is participation! Any gift, of any amount, matters. I am thrilled to share that our alumni participation this year reached 20% — a number that far outpaces other schools. The Alumni Endowment has now surpassed $2.5 million, which means we are in a position of strength to support and reward our faculty and students each school year.

I am incredibly proud of our Alumni Governing Board, complete with 22 members near and far who dedicated their time, talent, and passion for Latin in their volunteer work. I am grateful to the 717 alumni who jumped into the ring on FLY DAY V — a record number of alumni donors during our annual day of giving. I am delighted to share that our three Learning to Fly scholars in the Lower School had outstanding years, and are beloved by their teachers. One is known for her “...contagious personality. She enters the classroom twirling, dancing, and ready to start the day.”

Though you are no longer on campus each day, you continue to make a difference in the life of the school. What we are each able to contribute in our time and our gifts adds to an extraordinary impact. Thank you all for your unwavering support. It has been a true pleasure leading the AGB, and I look forward to all that next year brings for our Latin community.

Alumni Governing Board

The Alumni Governing Board (AGB) is composed of alumni from Charlotte, New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Jacksonville, and New Haven. Striving to strengthen ties among Latin alumni and the school itself, the AGB has focus committees that work with each other and the Office of Alumni Relations in identifying specific needs and the corresponding means to satisfy them, all while supporting the Mission of Charlotte Latin.

Alumni Governing Board Committees at Work

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Effe Ghartey-Tagoe Gibson ’10 Michelle Charles ’17

Goal: Collaborate with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to establish a productive interaction among Alumni of Color and the school community by offering relevant programming.

Endowment/Awards

Andrew DeWeese ’20

Goal: Oversee the Alumni Endowment and participate on faculty and administrative committees to select recipients of annual alumni-funded awards.

Sydnor Gammon ’07 Elizabeth Beecy ’14

Goal: Foster a community to encourage networking and relationship building among Latin alumni.

• Focus on Black alumni as our first DEI initiative. The DEI Committee has done the groundwork in identifying all of our Black alumni and studying peer schools’ comparable networks — all in anticipation of working with Erica Moore, our incoming Director of DEI, to roll out a CLS Black Alumni network this year.

• Managed the selection process and presentation for the three annual Inlustrate Orbem faculty awards. This year, these awards honored: Carol Webb-Gargagliano (Upper School), Laura Korkowski (Middle School), and Ginger McAdams (Lower School).

Giving

Talia Caliguiri Fann ’98

Goal: Increase awareness of the power and impact of Alumni giving.

• Researched the most efficient and meaningful ways to reconnect alumni with Latin and alumni with one other. Reviewed networking platform options, eventually agreeing that our established Charlotte Latin School Alumni LinkedIn group is working great.

• Devised plans for upcoming alumni panels (based on career paths and lifestyles), as well as plans to send an engagement survey for future alumni-to-alumni mentoring.

• Compared Latin’s alumni leadership giving societies to those of peer schools. Implemented the True Blue Giving Society specifically for Latin’s alumni philanthropic leaders, with a goal of increasing average alumni gift size to the Latin Fund.

• Continued use of social media as an alumni connection and recognition platform.

• Held in-person events like Book Discussions with Maria Klein and Hawks on Tap.

Fletcher Gregory, Lily McMahan ’22, Carol Webb-Gargagliano, and Ryan Carter ’12 celebrate Mrs. Webb-G’s well-deserved Inlustrate Orbem award.

• Obtained a record 717 alumni donors on FLY DAY. With the end-of-year Collins Cup challenge, we achieved our annual alumni participation goal of 20% with 824 total alumni donors.

Impact of ALUMNI GIVING

Inlustrate Orbem Awards

When an alum makes a gift to the Latin Fund, 25% of that gift is allocated to the CLS Alumni Endowment.

Established in 1990 and currently valued at $2.5 million, Latin’s Alumni Endowment is used to fund three important initiatives.

Three annual Inlustrate Orbem awards recognize and reward exceptional faculty members who have significantly contributed to the life of the school. Each faculty member receives a $5,000 award for their service and commitment to excellence.

In May 2022, Carol Webb-Gargagliano (Upper School), Laura Korkowski (Middle School), and Ginger McAdams (Lower School) received this special award.

Distinguished Faculty Chairs

Two Distinguished Faculty Chairs are selected to exemplify leadership, instruction, and mentorship for the entire Latin community. Current Distinguished Faculty Chairs are Mike Weiss and Richard Fletcher. Each Faculty Chair receives a substantial monetary commitment during their tenure.

Learning to Fly

Three Learning to Fly scholarships offer a Latin education to Lower School students. Priority is given to alumni children who have established need.

Alumni giving DOES make a difference.

Distinguished Faculty Chair Richard Fletcher ’85 and son, Theo ’28, enjoy the FLY DAY V mural painted by Nina Lavelle ’22.

Collins Cup CHAMPIONS

Introduced last year, the Collins Cup is named for our favorite math teacher and philanthropist, Dr. Ken Collins.

The Collins Cup challenge is awarded annually to the class with the highest participation in the Latin Fund by the school’s fiscal year-end on June 30.

Class of 2000 Wins

Always competitive, the small but mighty Class of 1977 proudly won the inaugural Collins Cup in 2020–21.

This year, the Class of 2000 takes hold of the Collins Cup, with 48% of the class making a gift to the Latin Fund.

The Office of Alumni Relations says, “We are all winners!” as the Collins Cup helps us reach our overall participation goals.

Alumni in the FAB ACADEMY

After graduating from college, Charlie Horvath ’13 was working in the industrial manufacturing industry. His sister, Avery ’15, became a software engineer for a robotics company. While the work was fun and engaging, both wanted to explore new types of engineering and shift their careers towards product development. They knew that Latin’s engineering lab had joined the worldwide Fab Lab network — more than 2,000 labs in 120 countries. Better yet, Charlotte Latin’s lab is considered a node, enabling the school to offer the Fab Academy course on “how to make almost anything.” So, the Horvaths returned to campus and completed the 20-week intensive Fab Academy certification. Along with Upper School students and faculty, they gained access to world-class fabrication expertise in a fast-paced collaborative environment, unparalleled at the high school level.

“Latin is the only high school node in the entire world. We both were so excited to return to Latin, and now we can take these skills back into the workforce and make our alma mater proud.”

Class of 1977 members and Dr. Collins celebrate the inaugural Collins Cup in July 2021. This year, the Class of 2000 takes hold of the Collins Cup, with 48% of the class making a gift to the Latin Fund.

A Commitment to PHILANTHROPY

Celebrating our Philanthropic Leaders

At Charlotte Latin, leadership is demonstrated in different and surprising ways.

Leadership in philanthropy represents every constituency — from young alumni and grandparents, to current parents and faculty and staff. We are proud to celebrate our philanthropic leaders.

These donors set the tone for leadership giving in the 2021–22 school year, and serve as inspiring examples for our entire school community. We are incredibly grateful for their investment.

The Latin Society

The Latin Society honors donors who support the Latin Fund with total annual giving of $2,500 or more.

“Alumni giving supports Latin’s expanded mission to be more inclusive, having more funds available to help students attend Latin who would otherwise not be in a position to do so.”

Vision2020

In 2021, Charlotte Latin gratefully celebrated the successful completion of the Vision2020 Campaign — the most successful capital campaign in the school’s history.

The Latin community committed an incredible $31.8M to invest in Latin’s future, funding crucial investments in our students, faculty, facilities, and operational excellence. As the priorities made possible by the campaign have become reality, so has our vision to empower the next generation of leaders in Charlotte and beyond.

Thank you to everyone whose participation in the Vision2020

Campaign helps our school community to thrive ahead. To read more about these generous partners, please visit the Vision2020

Donor Wall in the lobby of the Inlustrate Orbem Building or find the Vision2020 Commemorative Report: charlottelatin.org/support/gratitude.

“Thank you for supporting our school. My favorite part about CLS is that we have nice friends and teachers. I love CLS because I get to meet new people and learn. I am grateful for people spending their time to educate me. I love going to CLS because I get to play and learn with all of my friends.”

We are incredibly proud of Latin’s faculty and staff who participated in the Latin Fund.

TIME, TREASURE, TALENT Gifts of

2021–22 Booster Club President Nilma Amin P ’19, ’21, ’23 believes that the education of her children is done in partnership with the school. “Our children spend the majority of their day here. Latin is a community that shapes who they are becoming,” she says. She first became involved with the Booster Club when her oldest son started at Latin in 9th grade by volunteering in the concession stands. “We were a new family. It was a great way to meet other families and get a feel for the behind-the-scenes action,” she adds. Athletics is more than victories or defeats for the Amin family. The journey of physical endurance, mental strength, and even injuries have helped her children. Nilma has watched their relationships with peers and coaches deepen over the years and she feels fortunate that all Latin students have opportunities to try new sports and achieve success.

“Regardless of the various sports played by our three children, they all learned to play with dedication, with humility, and with heart.”

Alumni

Hawks fly high when we fly together, and this year, 20% of Latin’s alumni participated in the Latin Fund with their generous support. We are grateful for a vibrant alumni community who choose to show their one blue love each year for Latin.

Anderson planned a neighborhood breakfast stand aptly known as Cook’s Cafe and donated the proceeds to Charlotte Latin School “to help with costs of having school during COVID 19.” Anderson is pictured here in May 2021 with his 5th Grade teacher, Laura Balabushka, his mom, Shirley Anderson Cook ’93, and Director of Giving, Lea Fitzpatrick. WE SOAR Together,

Community. Participation. Thank you.

Charlotte Latin is excellent because of the people who invest in our school each and every day.

Teachers, and their utmost dedication to every student in their classroom.

Coaches, and the lessons they teach of discipline and sportsmanship.

Families, who choose to become part of our campus and community fabric.

Alumni, preserving the Latin spirit and pride.

Here, the contributions of every person in our Latin community matter. What you choose to give back to Latin impacts our most important asset — our students.

74 Charlotte Latin School 2021–22 | Thank You
