Charlotte Latin School is committed to the development of promising novice teachers from historically under-represented groups by providing one-on-one mentoring and skill building in the first year of teaching.

Meet the Latin Fellows

Being one of the first Latin Fellows is a major honor for me. I have been given the opportunity to observe and learn from some amazing teachers, each with their own unique teaching styles. I also have the chance to share myself and my culture with our teachers, students, and families.” Lower School and Educational Technology • Fellow since 2018 • Graduated from Columbia College

– Rozlyn Humphrey, Kindergarten and Educational Technology Support

my most meaningful experience as a Latin Fellow has been creating special relationships with my students. When I see students struggling, I give them extra support to show they truly have someone in their corner. After we work together for a period of time, it warms my heart to see students progressing in an area that once troubled them. That is when I know that what I’m doing here as a Latin Fellow is meaningful.” – Jasmine Washington, Grade 4 Team Lower School • Fellow since 2019 • Graduated from Univ. of South Carolina

Upper School • Fellow since 2019 • Graduated from Tufts University

Latin fellows has helped me grow as a professional and helped me identify the places where I need support. I have been given space to lead class, develop curriculum, share ideas, advise student groups, and participate fully just as any other faculty member in the upper school.” – Anjalique Knight, Upper School World History and Human Rights

LATIN FELLOWS PROVIDES: • Competitive salary plus optional benefits

• Mentoring by expert teachers • On-campus bi-monthly teaching seminars • Educational technology training • Observations and supportive feedback

• A curriculum that is traditional in design and innovative in implementation • A supportive first step in your career as a teacher • Ongoing professional development opportunities

The opportunity I have to work with Anjalique in the Latin Fellows program is definitely a highlight of my almost 20-year career at Latin. In fact, having the opportunity to work with a new teacher with the intellect and humor that Anjalique possesses, reenergized my own teaching. Co-teaching the Honors Human Rights class with her last year was especially meaningful not only to me but to the students; our differing backgrounds, ages, and experiences made for an exceptionally rich class. Anjalique taught me so much about intersectionality and the significance of meme culture. I am so happy that Anjalique agreed to a second year, and it has been rewarding to see her success as she leads her own classes this year. I am grateful that I can count her as my friend.” – Karen Glenn, Upper School History Teacher and Latin Fellows Mentor “Latin Fellows, now in its fourth year, successfully introduces young, new teachers from under-represented groups to the independent school world. The supportive structure, pairing a Fellow with a seasoned, experienced teacher for a full academic year, is a winning formula.” – Chuck Baldecchi, Head of School Head of School Chuck Baldecchi with Dr. Taylor and Latin Fellows

The Latin Fellows Model • Each Fellow is given an academic assignment in one of the three divisions: Lower School, Middle School, or Upper School. • The Fellow is paired with an experienced teacher who models the essential elements of effective teaching, which include lesson planning and delivery, classroom management, thoughtful communication, assessment, professional reflection, and technology integration. • After a period of observation and learning through professional development, the Fellow transitions into an instructional role by leading small groups, providing individualized student assistance, and working collaboratively with the experienced teacher to co-plan and deliver classroom instruction. Over time, the Fellow assumes progressively more responsibilities as an instructional leader, and with continued support from the lead teacher oversees two subject areas (in Lower School) or two classes (in Middle School or Upper School).

Lower School • Fellow from 2018-19 • Graduated from Johnson C. Smith University

Being a Latin Fellow means finding your place in the Charlotte Latin community. This process is meant to help build your own identity as a teacher and community member. I can’t think of a better way to be introduced to such a complex and energetic environment.” – Valeria Hernandez, Former Latin Fellow
