One of my favorite memories is from the 1994 Faculty Follies. The talent was amazing! Who could forget Chip Martin as Elvis singing “Kentucky Rain,” or Claudette Hall sitting in a bathtub (in what looked like her birthday suit) while the rest of us sang “Rubber Ducky, You’re the One”? We had bubbles, lots of bubbles, and lots of fun! What is something we might not know about you? I am an Army brat and saw Elvis Presley in 1960 filming a movie called G.I. Blues when my dad was stationed in Germany. Favorite movie/TV Show? Outlander on Starz What do you love most about Latin? Latin is a magical place where everyone knows your name, where your friends are lifelong, and students come back to see you after they graduate with wonderful stories of success!

KAREN MCQUAID Middle and Upper School Latin teacher Family: Spouse: Tom Mother: Charlotte Brother: Ken Hobbies: Reading, spending time with family and friends Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: I always enjoy visiting my husband’s family in Maine. Favorite midnight snack/food: Italian What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? I cherish the many laughs over the years with colleagues in the language department. Watching Bob Patten attempt to adjust a television set while Heidi Carpenter secretly countered his moves with the “missing” remote control tops the list! What is something we might not know about you? I went to high school with musician Ben Folds and with the late ESPN SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott. Favorite movie/TV Show? Probably “The Wizard of Oz.” What do you love most about Latin? Being surrounded by such dedicated, talented, and caring people.

MIKE WEISS Upper School History Teacher, Head Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Cross-Country Coach, Distance Coach, Varsity Track Family: Spouse: Patti (28 years) Cats: Benny and Jasper Hobbies: Cycling, running, reading, travel Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: Any bike-related vacation. Favorite midnight snack/food: Mexican and Italian What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? When C.W. Stacks crashed another teacher’s motorcycle on the stage in Thies Auditorium during the “Faculty Follies” performance back in the `90s (both he and the motorcycle were OK). Beyond that, I have thousands of great memories connected to my colleagues with whom I work, the students I teach, and the athletes I coach. What is something we might not know about you? Chuck Edwards, the esteemed History Department Chair, is a former student of mine. When Chuck was a high school student, I once accidentally caused General Norman Scharzkopf, Supreme Commander of Operation Desert Storm, to become publicly angry with him. It’s a long story. Favorite movie/TV Show? Godfather series, Goodfellas, The Sopranos — pretty much anything about organized crime. Also Seinfeld, The Office, and Parks and Recreation. What do you love most about Latin? Every single day, for 30 years, at the end of each class period students say “thank you” as they depart.

I know all the words to the 15-minute version of Rapper’s Delight. What do you love most about Latin? There are so many things I love about Latin including my colleagues and the life-long relationships I have formed with many students and parents. What I am struck by most often is how beautiful the campus is and how lucky I am to work in an environment with such beautiful art and gardens.

ANNE CAMMER Middle School Art, Grade 7 team, Middle School Diversity & Inclusion Family: Spouse: Rick Son: Ethan Cats: Sherlock and Nigel Hobbies: Church, music, adventuring, being in nature What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? I had an amazing adventure traveling to Uganda with Latin families and colleagues to teach in an Acholi school. The students, some for the first time in their lives, participated in art, music, and soccer clinics. What is something we might not know about you? This past fall, I was invited to try out for a karaoke show that may pilot next year on Netflix. Spoiler alert: I did not get on the show, but it was fun to try out! Favorite movie/TV Show? Between Two Ferns: the Movie, Living with Yourself, Jane the Virgin What do you love most about Latin? The people! And, our Core Values, that when put into practice by students and adults, lead us onward and upward!

CHRIS DOWNING Upper School History Teacher and Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships Family: Spouse: Wilma Sons: Brendan ’16 and Connor ’18 Hobbies: Traveling with my wife, playing golf with friends, reading, keeping up with my sons. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: Any beach where all four of us can hang out. Favorite midnight snack/food: Anything homemade, especially fish, beef, and desserts What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? One of my favorites occurred in the Fall of 2005. Jay Scott asked me to fill in for him in the press box to announce the state championship football game between Latin and Providence Day. It was bitter cold that night and the press box was open to the elements. It was an amazing back and forth game, and we won 20-14 by stopping the PD offense on the last play of the 4th quarter. What is something we might not know about you? I was born in Texas. Favorite movie/TV Show? It’s a Wonderful Life. Anything with Morgan Freeman or anything produced/directed by Ken and Ric Burns. What do you love most about Latin? The people I am fortunate to work with, throughout campus, on a daily basis. We have a very special community here, and I try and thank everyone who helps me do my job.

RICHARD HARRIS English Teacher, Academic Mentor, Creative Writing Club and Scholastic Writing Competition Advisor, LAA Liaison, CLS Camp Counselor, CLS Writing Institute Instructor, Global Studies Lit & Creative Writing Workshop Instructor, Professional Reading Group Leader, Faculty-Athletics Rep & Student Section Supervisor, & Spirit Club’s Zen Golf Coach Family: Spouse: Sherry; Sons: Foster and William Hobbies: I enjoy downhill mountain biking in our NC mountains, but I most enjoy surfing at the Outer Banks in the winter and spring when the waves get big. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: A good memory of the family on a trip was backpacking/camping on the cliffs of Shortoff Mountain above Lake James. It was fun taking my family to the campsite that my American Transcendental Club students led me to many years ago when we read Emerson and Thoreau around the campfire. Favorite midnight snack/food: Home cooking. My family says I make the best pancakes, sandwiches, and steaks — and everything else Sherry makes is always a favorite, too. What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? My adventures to Pisgah, Shortoff, and other NC mountains with students, leading my 2003-2009 American Transcendentalism Club, and running our club’s Sundial Newsletter that published student artwork, poetry, and philosophical statements by hip students such as Will Rudolph. What is something we might not know about you? I’ve surfed some of the world’s most famous, deadliest waves over shallow reefs and biked the world’s most famous downhill trails with cliff jumps and creek gap jumps. Despite some scars, I’m still surfing and downhill biking. Favorite movie/TV Show? As a teacher, my favorite film is Dead Poets Society. John Keating is a kindred spirit. When students call me “O Captain, My Captain,” I can say I am a captain because I’ve earned my captain’s chair for my 20th year at Latin. I also enjoy Red Bull TV for surfing videos and Red Bull Rampage downhill biking contests. What do you love most about Latin? What I love most about Latin are the people, colleagues who make our community one of genuine collegiality, and students who stay friends for life.

I have so many everyday! Maybe when a senior I had in first grade remembered me and ran over to give me a hug. What is something we might not know about you? I help people redesign their homes with things they already have. I love the smiles and hugs I get back. Favorite movie/TV Show? I love The Big Bang Theory and Whose Line Is It Anyway. What do you love most about Latin? We are one big family.

JAY SCOTT Horne Performing Arts Center Manager/ AV Tech Director Family: Spouse: Renee Son: Tyler (high school senior) Hobbies: Traveling across the country to National Parks in our RV and pen making in my wood shop Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: RV Trip to the National Parks in Utah. Zion National Park is my favorite because we hiked the Virgin River Gorge. Favorite midnight snack/food: Hamburgers on the grill What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? The musical production of The Wizard of Oz in the mid 2000s. Also announcing a few State Championship games in football for the Hawks. What is something we might not know about you? I am the Ministry Coordinator for my Sunday School class and I sing on a praise team in the choir at FBCIT. Favorite movie/TV Show? The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen, 9-1-1, and God Friended Me What do you love most about Latin? The families and witnessing these young students grow and mature into outstanding young citizens.

JENNY URBAIN Middle School Spanish Teacher Family: Spouse: Henry Children: Katelyn (8 years old) and Austen (6 years old) Hobbies: I love to do Zumba, and you know I love teaching about oils! Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: We love to go to Hilton Head to be with my parents. Favorite midnight snack/food: Mexican, sushi, steaks, and desserts! I love it all! (Especially when I don’t have to cook!) What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? I had a blast when Dr. Fox took us to Cashiers. It was the beginning of many memories. I loved getting to know my now long-time friends Teresa, Donay, Chris, and Clark and had so much fun singing karaoke with Anne Cammer and winning a limbo contest. What a week! Favorite movie/TV Show? Schitt’s Creek (comedy) and Happy Valley (police show) What do you love most about Latin? I love coming to work knowing that I have such good friends, great support, and hard-working students. LAWRENCE WALL Head of Upper School, Instructor in Classical Languages, Junior Classical League co-sponsor Hobbies: I love classical music, genealogical research, and snagging a bargain at an antique store. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: Well, we went to Six Flags the summer of ’68. Everything went sort of downhill from there. Favorite midnight snack/food: I love Greek food. What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? The opening of the Inlustrate Orbem Building is the pinnacle. What is something we might not know about you? My nickname got me a mention in John Shelton Reid’s “1001 Things Everyone Needs to Know about the South.” Favorite movie/TV Show? No question — I Love Lucy. What do you love most about Latin? Our students are good people. Our teachers are the best. Our parents are supportive. May it ever be so.

KARI WIMBISH Humanities 6 Teacher, Grade 6 Team Leader, Middle School Model UN Coach Family: Spouse: Dan Huang Sons: Tai and Sam Dog: Lucky Hobbies: Cooking, gardening, reading, live music Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: A Northern California family adventure! Favorite midnight snack/food: Indian and Mexican — not necessarily together though, that might be an interesting mix. What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? So many memories, it’s hard to pick. I’ve spent many birthdays with 110 of my favorite people on the Grade 6 class trip to Kanuga. And speaking of birthdays, because Jeff Wolfe and I share one, I can usually convince at least one student each year that he and I are twins. What is something we might not know about you? I am a third-generation Charlottean. Favorite movie/TV Show? I love movies and TV shows such as “Mad Men” and “Stranger Things,” that are set in a specific time period and get the historic details just right. What do you love most about Latin? While my own school experience elsewhere in Charlotte was good, I would have loved to have gone to school at Latin. Growing up in a school, from age 5 to 18, with teachers who care and really follow your progress, and that offers an enticing array of opportunities to pursue, must be an incredible experience for our students.

LIZ DANNEMANN Lead Kindergarten Teacher, Team Leader, LA Curriculum Team Member, Social Committee Family: Spouse: Brian Sons: Tim (19 years old) and Jack ’22 Dogs: Dixie and Rex Hobbies: I love to cook. I love walking. I enjoy gardening. And I recently started yoga. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: We just went to Ireland last year as a family. It was Tim’s graduation present. Favorite midnight snack/food: Mediterranean food What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? When I turned 40, they organized everyone to wear purple, green, and gold. The entire Lower School was involved. What is something we might not know about you? I was a gymnast for 15 years, ages 3–18. Favorite movie/TV Show? When Harry Met Sally/Seinfeld What do you love most about Latin? I love that because of the community we have, I love that I am excited to come to work every day. Not everyone gets that. I love the feeling that Charlotte Latin gives.

DOREEN FITZPATRICK Lower School Administrative Assistant Family: Sons: Matthew (25 years old) and Liam (20 years old) Best friend: Joe Hobbies: Spending time with my boys when they are home, cooking (especially making banana pudding for Mark Tayloe... lol), exercising, bicycle riding, sailing, listening to music, and relaxing. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: Wrightsville Beach, St. Simons Island, GA, and traveling to Maine Favorite midnight snack/food: Love Italian, Mexican, and a really good steak on the grill What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? I have two! First, when Mark Tayloe and Linda Cropper gave me approval to establish the Lower School Welcome Desk! These parent volunteers continue to make memories for me and Lower School; they are absolutely awesome. Second, several years ago, I was given the honor of remodeling my work space in the Lower School Office. Working closely with Kim Mullery and watching the office transform over a summer are memories I will always cherish. What is something we might not know about you? I was a Charlotte Catholic High School cheerleader, dance instructor from my mid-teens to my early twenties, and taught Water Aerobics at the Uptown YMCA in my mid-twenties. Favorite movie/TV Show? Oh my, this is embarrassing to say but I love watching my recorded episodes of General Hospital. What do you love most about Latin? I love it all. Latin is family — from the faculty/staff to parents and students, especially the Lower School students skipping, laughing and smiling. It’s a happy place.

Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: Aruba What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? My favorite memory was the first time both of my kids walked into Charlotte Latin as students. It was such an exciting day! I can’t believe they are already in Grade 3 and Grade 5! What is something we might not know about you? I don’t actually work in the Middle School; that’s my twin sister, Sarah! What do you love most about Latin? I am lucky to have the opportunity to see my family and friends every day!

Favorite midnight snack/food: Real Mexican food What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? An amazing trip to Peru with Anne Cammer, Ed Fox, and Ayeola Elias. The trip was awe-inspiring, and my travel partners were so fun and very funny! What is something we might not know about you? I eat a Pop-Tart every morning for breakfast (not proud of it). What do you love most about Latin? I love the friends I have made throughout the years, and I also love all the holidays we get!

Every day is a fun day to be a chemistry teacher at Latin, but I’d have to say my favorite memory was getting engaged on the cross country trails. What is something we might not know about you? Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: We took a family trip to Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic last summer after both of our daughters graduated. It was amazing. Kindergarten students keep me laughing each year, and traveling abroad with Upper School students is always an adventure. I think my two favorite trips were the Habitat for Humanity trip to El Salvador in 2009 (thanks to fellow chaperones Coach Howard and Mr. Barnhardt) and traveling to Argentina with some Lower School teachers in 2014. What is something we might not know about you? I am actually an introvert and could spend hours just sitting around, quietly reading a book or the newspaper. Favorite movie/TV Show? I’m addicted to General Hospital. Also, I may be one of the few who still watches Grey’s Anatomy. What do you love most about Latin? The energy of Lower Schoolers keeps me going, and I truly look forward to working with my colleagues (my friends) every day.

There are so many memories that make me smile when I think of my 10 years at Latin. I’ll always remember my Outward Bound trip (with Charisse and Topher), fun times with the Grade 3 team, seeing Meredith on campus for eight years, my trip to Argentina with Kelly, and a moment I will NEVER forget — hugging Luke Kuechly in Room 22! What is something we might not know about you? I have a certified therapy dog, Quinn. We visit the Ronald McDonald House and the Levine’s Children’s Hospital. He has made so many children smile! I have never felt so much love and support when my father passed. Turning around at his funeral and seeing so many colleagues and parents from previous classes sitting in the pews really made me appreciate our school community.

I thought, “Oh no, I don’t like snakes but I have to protect these kids.” I anxiously walked to the sandbox and “the snake” was an earthworm. I have never been so excited to see an earthworm in my life. And to a child an earthworm can look as big as a snake. What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? I went to Middle and Upper School at Charlotte Latin, and as a sophomore, I was an exchange student in England. A group of us stayed in England for about two weeks and we even traveled to Paris during that time. In August 2001, after college graduation, my two friends — also Latin graduates — and I drove across the country and back. We stopped at numerous national parks and camped along the way. We visited many cities as well, including New York, where I saw the World Trade Center for the first and only time. Favorite movie/TV Show? Some series I love include The Americans and The Wire. What do you love most about Latin? My colleagues are friendly and supportive!

My father was in the Air Force, so I was born in Okinawa, Japan, and then lived there again on our second tour from 1984-1989. Favorite movie/TV Show? 90 Day Fiancé (definitely my guilty pleasure) What do you love most about Latin? I definitely love that working at Latin gives me the chance to get to know students so fully. Whether it’s traveling to overnight tournaments with the debate team or working one-on-one with students on their writing, I feel like I have such unique opportunities to connect with students.

Each year, Charlotte Latin has meaningful service projects for the students to partake in or to become more aware of. It is AWESOME that Latin creates time, space, and energy for all to be involved in. Some students have had eye-popping awareness or greater appreciation as a result of these service projects. What is something we might not know about you? Once upon a time, I wore hearing aids; however, in 2004, thinking I had an ear infection as a result of triathlon practices in iffy waters, I went to a small-town Ear, Nose & Throat practice to get it looked at. The nurse practitioner who examined my ear and looked at the medical history with my ears had to tell me that my hearing in that ear was gone for good. Short story, as a result of my hearing loss and meeting that cute nurse practitioner, we got married and now have two beautiful kids. What do you love most about Latin? The history of the school, the open-mindedness to try new things, the people who work here, and how they care for the students.

I have been here either as a student, parent, or staff member since 1978, so the people I have met and interacted with at Latin are truly my favorite memory. What is something we might not know about you? I think most people know that I have an identical twin, but for a long time my sister’s picture was on my driver’s license. Sadly the state of Texas now owns that memento. Favorite movie/TV Show? NCIS What do you love most about Latin? That it is a family school — the genuine support and interest that our community shows in the health, happiness, and well-being of one another is unique. I am blessed to be an alum, parent, and staff member.

BETH WEAVER Lower School Learning Resources Family: Spouse: Brian; Children: Hadley (Grade 1), Lyla (TK), and Zoe (Little White Cockapoo) Hobbies: Shopping and fashion; painting; interior design; exercise; organization; vacationing by a lake, beach, mountains, or somewhere tropical; spending time with my family in Buffalo (I have two brothers and two sisters.), spending time with great friends, and laughter. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: I have several favorites, but top two are: Soggy Dollar Bar and the Baths on the British Virgin Islands and taking my girls to Disney for the first time. Favorite midnight snack/food: Thai, Mexican, or sushi What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? My favorite memory here has to be when my daughters got their acceptance letter from Admissions. I have also really enjoyed arts here at Latin (seeing the beautiful work hanging in the halls or seeing an amazing performance). This year, I just love being able to see both of my daughters’ smiling faces in the hall and grabbing a quick hug from them. What is something we might not know about you? My best friend in high school was Scotty Bowman’s (a famous hockey coach) daughter. I’ve drunk champagne from the Stanley Cup, and Mr. Bowman broke up a party that I threw in high school right before the police got there. Favorite movie/TV Show? A Few Good Men and I also love any of the “brat pack movies”- Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club...etc. My favorite TV show (besides watching anything on Bravo) is by far Friday Night Lights. What do you love most about Latin? There are so many things I love about Latin — the arts, the teachers, the beautiful campus, the amazing professional development that has been provided for me, but most of all the people here are so fun to work with and make it easy to come to work every day.

Hobbies: Working out, college and NFL football, enjoying live music, and entertaining friends and family. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: British Columbia Favorite midnight snack/food: A good homemade black bean burger and savory sweet potato fries. What is your favorite or most embarrassing Charlotte Latin memory? When I was the DJ for LS Field Day and the kids were dancing on the track to the music I was playing. What is something we might not know about you? My husband and I have been to every winery in NC, and we’re now venturing to all the wineries in VA. Favorite movie/TV Show? I’m into sports. We have three TVs streaming at the same time when it’s college and NFL football season, as well as college basketball season. What do you love most about Latin? I love that it’s a family community. I love that expectations are high and everyone — teachers and students alike — is accountable.

My favorite memory was when we [Admissions] were in the Lower School, and the students got off the bus and came into the Lower School building. Their excitement to see their friends and teachers and to get to class is infectious. It made every morning a happy one. What is something we might not know about you? I played ice hockey in college. Favorite movie/TV Show? Any Jason Bourne movie What do you love most about Latin? My relationships with my colleagues, students, and parents.

I love to watch soccer with family and friends. Favorite place to vacation/relax/get away: I go to New York or Boston where my family lives. I had applied many times to Charlotte Latin, so the day they offered me a job, I was so happy. What is something we might not know about you? I grew up in Colombia and was in the army for three years. When I got out of the army, I applied for my passport. I came straight to America. I was 22. Favorite movie/TV Show? I only like to watch sports, mainly soccer. What do you love most about Latin? I like everything. I am here every day. It is like my home here.

CRITERIA FOR SERVICE RECOGNITION All members of the Charlotte Latin School staff working a minimum of 20 hours per week are recognized in five-year increments beginning with five years. For the purpose of this program, the year commences in September and includes anyone who is in the employ of the School no later than January 31 of the following year. Staff members commencing employment after January 31 will become eligible for recognition the following school year. In the event that an interruption in service occurs, total years of service are cumulated. Years spent on leave or outside the employ of the School shall not be included in the total. Excepted from this and qualifying for inclusion in years of service are: sabbatical, exchange program and/or other school-sanctioned programs.
