LATIN Fall/Winter 2020 • Charlotte Latin School
Charlotte Latin School’s mission is to encourage individual development and civility in our students by inspiring them to learn, by encouraging them to serve others, and by offering them many growth-promoting opportunities.
In May 2020, Charlotte Latin achieved what seemed the impossible — an in-person graduation. On a beautiful Sunday morning, the Class of 2020, with their immediate families, gathered on the field in Patten Stadium. The Class of 2020 will always be the class that graduated during a global pandemic. But that’s not their whole story. It doesn't define them. They had incredible experiences as students and left an indelible mark on Charlotte Latin School. They traveled the world, broke records, earned prestigious awards, won championships, discovered new passions, and forged new paths.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
MISSION-DRIVEN AND HAWK STRONG A Letter from the Head of School
Chuck Baldecchi
Dear Latin Community, The mast of the ship stands prominently on the brick patio below. You can’t miss the impressive edifice that has been built in front of the Horne Performing Arts Center. It stands tall, and as you get closer to the precipice, you notice the sturdy stage that is the ship. In the afternoon, it is occupied by Middle School drama students rehearsing Treasure Island for the fall play. Instead of a live audience filling the amphitheater seats to watch the performance, the cameras are rolling and our students bellow out their lines for a YouTube audience at home. Welcome to 2020. On one hand, this ship represents the creative use of space, the flexibility of the director, tech crew members, set designers, and the actors as they stand strong against the obstacles COVID-19 has presented each class being taught at Latin, but more dramatically it stands as a metaphor for Charlotte Latin School — its faculty, staff, parents, volunteers, and students — as we all weather the storm and turbulent seas and come together as a crew to meet and deliver upon the mission of Charlotte Latin School. Charlotte Latin’s mission is to encourage individual development and civility in our students by inspiring them to learn, by encouraging them to serve others, and by offering them many growth-promoting opportunities. There are moments in history when schools and organizations are tested and challenged. During those challenging times, weak institutions can falter, and the community fractures. But if an institution knows its mission, adheres to its core values, and binds together as a community, it will become stronger and more relevant than it was before. That is absolutely the case for Charlotte Latin. If having school during this pandemic isn’t a “growth-promoting opportunity,” I don’t know what is. It is teaching the Latin community to learn something new every day, pushing our teachers to think creatively, and requiring our students to solve problems in both the classroom and in their souls. The only way we can accomplish success as a community is to put aside selfish impulses and embrace “the service of others.” It is truly a beautiful thing to watch and to experience. Mission-driven and Hawk strong,
Charles D. Baldecchi Head of School

ENCOURAGING THEM TO SERVE OTHERS
LATIN LEADS WITH HONOR IN THE LOWER SCHOOL Honors Self, Others, Learning, Leading
T
he families who founded Charlotte Latin School envisioned that the Latin graduate would model our Core Values: Leadership, Commitment to Excellence, Honor Above All, Personal Responsibility, Moral Courage, and Respect for Oneself and Others. These core values stand strong today, and in fact, one might argue, they have never been stronger.
At the helm is leadership, a trait that conjures natural positions of authority, stature, and influence — student council, the school’s administration, or our board of trustees for instance. And while these are all vital roles in the life and community of a school like Charlotte Latin, they do not act alone. Leaders, the founders believed, are everywhere.
“
Many people — particularly children — think that the person in the room who is the most vocal, or the biggest, or perhaps the most humorous is considered a leader. What we hope to teach our students is that leadership involves understanding and practicing concepts such as courage, resilience, curiosity, and self-awareness. In Leads with Honor, they learn that all people have the ability to learn and the capacity to lead.” – Ann Brock, Director of Leadership Development Visually portrayed throughout classrooms and The philosophy of Latin Leads with Honor is based upon everyday, citizen hallways is the Leads with Honor compass rose. leadership that is accessible to all students and cultivates community and connection. To accomplish this with our youngest students and broaden their understanding of true leadership, a dedicated Lower School Leads with Honor team, led by Ann Brock, Director of Leadership Development, and Lower School teacher Mary Ellen Reese, was created to implement a Lower School leadership development curriculum. Lower School Leads with Honor began in 2016 with a fourth-grade pilot and expanded to Grades 2–5 the following year.
“Our kindergarten and first-grade students already spend time on learning how to do school, incorporating characteristics such as civility, kindness, and respect into their everyday routines,” said Head of Lower School Mark Tayloe. “We knew we could begin to build on that foundation with the second grade — Latin’s Class of 2028.” Continued on page 8.
Leadership Attributes in the Lower School “When I think about the eight leadership attributes (see right) that our students focus on going back to second grade, we see them all at work in our classrooms. We certainly have an emphasis on resilience and responsibility, but we get the whole picture.” – Jennifer Keith, Grade 5 6 LATIN Magazine • Fall/Winter 2020

ENCOURAGING THEM TO SERVE OTHERS
The Lower School garden creates opportunities for the fifth grade to learn, on a small scale, gardening and farming skills while also reinforcing many of the attributes of Leads with Honor, such as commitment, resilience, and collaboration. Planning a fall and a spring garden teaches the varied crop seasons and uses native flowers to teach the importance and types of pollinators. While weeding and planting, we find other educational opportunities, and the students learn that the garden requires their commitment to be successful. Centrally located, the garden is a source of pride for the fifth grade and a learning tool for as many grades as possible.

ENCOURAGING THEM TO SERVE OTHERS
Today, more than six years after the Lower School Leads with Honor inception, it takes neither a sharp eye nor a keen ear to notice that Leads with Honor is everywhere, and the students eagerly await the activities. Visually portrayed throughout classrooms and hallways is the Leads with Honor compass rose. The program/curriculum plays out in the classrooms via experiential Hawks Quest activities such as the Number Slide, Reel Story, pattern blocks, and planting a garden. Sharp fifth-grade students, who were the first to “do” Leads with Honor reflect on their very first exercise in second grade — The Hula Hoop Pass:
The HULA HOOP Pass Prop: One hula hoop for each group. Flinn Teichman We get into Leads with Honor and suddenly everyone comes together — it's almost like we knocked down the walls of groups and joined each other.
Cam Thomas We learned to work together, and it helped us get to know each other.
Sam Wagner In second grade, you don’t know much about working together as a team. The hula hoop just got us started. That’s what Leads with Honor can do.
Emma Griggs It was fun, like the game that you learn something from.

Challenge: To pass the hula hoop all the way around the circle without releasing hands. Brief: Each small group stands in a circle holding hands. Two students let go of their hands and place the hula hoop between them. Rejoin hands. Each participant must pass through the hoop as it makes its way around the circle. If a disconnect occurs, begin again. Debrief: Was this activity easier or harder than you expected? Why? What was a successful strategy that your group used to pass the hoop? What did your group do when you became frustrated? How did you stay committed to completing the challenge without breaking the rules? Describe other examples, away from Leads with Honor, where staying committed is important.
For our students to excel at Latin and in life, it is essential for them to know that they have the ability to lead. Through practice and experience, Latin Leads with Honor instills this knowledge in even Latin’s youngest students. To hear fifth-grade students articulate what they have learned in four years through Hawks Quest and Leads with Honor is invaluable. More important, however, is their self-awareness within the bigger realm of their community. Imagine what we will hear from them as they progress through Leads with Honor in the Middle and Upper Schools and as global citizens. Learn more at www.charlottelatin.org/programs/leadership
INSPIRING THEM TO LEARN
THE AMERICAN PARADOX AND PROMISE SEEING HISTORY THROUGH A LOCAL LENS By late spring 2020, we were accustomed to virtual this and drive-through that, and carefully planned curricula pivoted abruptly to meet the challenges presented by COVID. Grade 7 history students craved engagement as they learned remotely, and their teachers Mr. Hutchins and Mrs. Putman, yearned to end the year in a meaningful and personal way — from their makeshift breakfast table classrooms. Enter the Hobart family, who serendipitously introduced the teachers to the journeys of two brave individuals. The connection more than met the need for robust and relevant engagement as the class concluded its study of the Civil War, the legacy of slavery, and post-war restoration. The individuals are Jimmy Lee Kirkpatrick and De Kirkpatrick, two gentlemen with the same last name and age but quite different life paths. Here is a glimpse into their fascinating story spanning almost seven decades and that they shared with 115 students in a virtual class in May.
J
immie Lee Kirkpatrick grew up in 1960s Charlotte in the Grier Town (now known as Grier Heights) neighborhood, which was then considered the outskirts of town. He attended Billingsville Elementary and the all-black Second Ward High School. A talented athlete, Jimmie Lee made the difficult choice as a rising senior to transfer to the predominantly-white Myers Park High School (MPHS) to increase his chances of playing college football. At MPHS, he became the school’s first black football player, and when it came time for the famed Shrine Bowl — where the best of North Carolina high school football played the best of South Carolina — based on his high school football success, Jimmie Lee seemed a shoo-in. But despite his talent, he was not selected. The community erupted in outrage. Debate spiked in local news columns and over Charlotte dinner tables. Was it race or just football? Civil Rights Attorney Julius Chambers filed a lawsuit against the Shrine Bowl claiming racial discrimination. Civil unrest in the Queen City elevated.
“In a time when students felt so distant and removed, this experience was humanizing.” – Rick Hutchins, Grade 7 History

INSPIRING THEM TO LEARN
Despite the intense controversy, Jimmie Lee was at peace. He knew he had to persevere on his path. He went on to play football as a Purdue Boilermaker, where his team won the 1967 Rose Bowl his freshman year. As a sophomore, he led the Big 10 conference in kick-off returns. Fast forward to 2013, when Gary Schwab of The Charlotte Observer ran a three-part series about Jimmie Lee and the Shrine Bowl case: (1) “Jimmie Lee Kirkpatrick: Breaking through in North Carolina high school football;” (2) “Breaking Through: A game that moved off the field and into court;” and (3) “Breaking Through: Mustangs of 1965 reunite, reflect on the perfect season.” Charlotte native and fellow MPHS Mustang De Kirkpatrick took an interest in the coverage, instantly recalling his classmate — the hotshot black football player Jimmie Lee. “Cuz,” they would call each other in the hallways in jest because of their same last name.
Hoping to reconnect, De reached out to the Observer reporter to request Jimmie Lee’s contact information. He emailed Jimmie Lee, who now lives on the west coast in Oregon and had coached and taught for many years in public education. The classmates, who had not seen each other in decades, made a plan to speak on the phone. On that call, Jimmie asked about the first initial “H” he had noted in De’s formal email signature. “It stands for Hugh,” De replied. This seemingly benign answer would unearth painful details about their history and alter the course of their future, taking them from mere class and teammates to much, much more. Jimmie Lee went on to explain his question. In a quest for information about his own family’s history, he discovered that a Hugh Kirkpatrick had owned his ancestors — specifically his great, great grandfather, Sam — in slavery.
“Our nation was founded on perfect ideals. Throughout our course, often relying on primary sources, we come to learn that not all of these ideals were granted evenly to all people. Yet the promise of these ideals provides countless examples of morally courageous individuals and groups for us to study, together helping America fulfill its vision of ‘a more perfect union.’ ” – Lauren Putman, Grade 7 History

“
We have so much more in common than we do not.” ― Jimmy Lee Kirkpatrick
De was Hugh’s namesake three generations deep. “I was stunned,” said De. “But once I got over the shock, I spent much more time with Jimmie Lee, and we became very good friends.” The conversations between Jimmie Lee and De deepened over the next two years and sparked a journey for both men into their shared past, taking their story about the slaveholding history that connects them on the road. They share this gift with churches and civic organizations across the country. Jimmie Lee and De spent an hour with our 7th-grade students, exemplifying the moral courage Charlotte Latin founders hoped for, sparking curiosities, and talking about healing and forgiveness. “In a time when students felt so distant and removed, this experience was humanizing,” said Mr. Hutchins. “I hope that our story will allow others the ability to examine the history of race and slavery in America in a manner that is safe, healing, and productive,” said Jimmie Lee. “We must examine what it takes to have this kind of conversation. I am grateful for the trust we have in each other and the safety we feel. We have so much more in common than we do not,” he continued.

GROWTH-PROMOTING OPPORTUNITIES
SILVER LININGS ON THE SILVER SCREEN PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
W
hen Charlotte Latin’s founders wrote the school’s mission statement, it is doubtful they envisioned a pandemic some 50+ years later. They did, however, plan a school to equip its students and community with the tools needed to navigate uncharted territory and to grow from whatever came its way — to rise to the challenge. In a year when we could have simply “made do,” or canceled, or postponed, Latin has instead reimagined school — and all that goes with it — just as our wise founders intended. In some capacities, we might just be grateful for the year that offered so many growth-promoting opportunities — silver linings, if you will. In a mere four months, from August to November, the Performing Arts Department and its “cast of thousands” produced Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and presented the film version after Thanksgiving to rave reviews. We invite you to enjoy some perspectives — the opportunities — that unfolded.
From the Director of Performing Arts – Alicia Long Transforming Pride and Prejudice from the stage play to film created learning opportunities we could only imagine. Student screenwriters collaborating with actors, newly-interested film and camera crew working with industry professionals, and actors filming on location are just a few of the examples of this rich experience. In a time of great uncertainty, it was a huge win for our students and a delight for our community.
The Setting – The Duke Mansion The website of this venerable Charlotte estate reads, “Find yourself in southern splendor.” Though built in 1915 (and listed on the National Register of Historic Places) —100 years apart from the setting of Pride and Prejudice — the grandeur of The Duke Mansion makes for a perfect backdrop for Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, et al. Thanks to Beth and Charlie Lucas who secured permission to shoot on location.

From the President of Latin Arts Association – Vivi Bechtler-Smith As the umbrella organization that supports, enhances, and promotes the arts community at Charlotte Latin School, LAA is proud to support the Performing Arts in making virtual productions a reality. LAA provided the necessary funding for the purchase of film cameras and equipment, a microphone system, and the professional editing services needed to allow productions to proceed — to succeed — on a virtual platform. These enhancements will serve the department for years to come.
GROWTH-PROMOTING OPPORTUNITIES
CAST From the Director – Matt Cosper Tackling a film project has been an enormously educational and humbling experience. Film and theatre are very different mediums and being good at one does not guarantee aptitude for the other. When I direct a play or a musical, it is essential that something passes between the actors and audience in the moment. Theatre is about the movement of energy; film is about photography. The acting needs to be much simpler and truer to our notions of reality, and it is the movement of the camera and the framing of the pictures that does the emotional heavy lifting. My task was to simplify the actors’ work, distilling performances down to something essential. It is an entirely new skill set. To call it challenging would be the understatement of the year. In the end, it is still the director working with actors and technicians to tell a story; the muscles that we use for that are remarkably similar. It’s about finding a way to instill truth into fiction, and to do so in a way that feels beautiful, inevitable, and joyous.

GROWTH-PROMOTING OPPORTUNITIES
From the Protagonist Elizabeth Bennet – Kate McCracken ’22 Making a movie was, for me, definitely the silver lining of COVID. The idea that the fall play would be presented as a film was incredibly exciting. Though intimidated by the logistics of making a movie, we were eager to get working. Given that film performance is so different from theatre, I questioned if I would be able to transfer my strengths (singing and acting) onto the screen. Stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me opportunities to learn about my craft. Everytime we shot a scene I found something new about screen acting — like learning how to be authentic in a stripped-down performance or how to avoid being distracted by the equipment. Performing Pride and Prejudice at The Duke Mansion really sealed the deal. I would be so happy no matter the location, but being in a beautiful home that looks right out of the 1800s definitely helped me create the world of my character, Elizabeth Bennet. There are many societal norms in the 1800s that we don’t think about in 2020 such as bowing and a very precise posture. Unlike a traditional play, films require large crews to help with things like boom mics, wardrobe, and camera positions, so many students who normally aren’t interested in theatre helped on the crew. The Pride and Prejudice creative team made this process a dream. Time and time again our director, Mr. Cosper, created a space where students felt comfortable to try new things, to fail at said things, and to grow. Making this film added so much unexpected joy to my junior year. I never believed I could have film experience before college. This is one of the best things I’ve ever done, as a performer and as a human.
From the Film Industry Professional – Joseph Stauffer At Shutter Blade Media we are always looking for future team members with drive and passion to hop out on set with us for film projects. The adaptability of the students from stage to set was remarkable and they really showed amazing potential and positive energy. During our preproduction lessons, students had “hands-on” experience with some of the equipment. One of the main things I tried to drive home during these lessons was, as with any production, shooting on location presents its own set of challenges and all boils down to teamwork and “creative problem solving.” Even though we had an accelerated time frame to shoot this project, everyone (even a few budding filmmakers) was a pleasure to work with and did an absolutely fantastic job.

GROWTH-PROMOTING OPPORTUNITIES
Adapting a Play to a Screenplay - From the Writer – Kaylah Hooper ’21 Pride and Prejudice was initially intended to be a stage production, but was shifted to film to follow safety protocols and to accommodate our audience. With this shift came the need to adapt the play for screen. Although I took Latin’s Filmmaking course my junior year, this project was still very new. Instead of cultivating my own ideas for film, this was to become my adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic book — set in Regency era British ballrooms and mansions, with characters whose nuanced dialect, costumes, and relationships I needed to fully understand and portray. When creating the script, I watched movies, read the book, and looked at fan art. I took what I learned, and wrote what I wanted to see on camera, envisioning the scenes over and over again to get a better idea of sound, pace, and rhythm. With Mrs. Labrie to advise and the writing team of Matthew Marcus, Alison Moore, Jenna Upton, and Elena Egge, we worked closely to determine how we wanted the film to play out. I am very proud of the results.
From the Costumer – Sally Roper Adapting costuming for film versus costuming for stage has its challenges, but it was so exciting and the kids were thrilled. Costuming for a film is quite different from a play. Typically on stage, there is costume sharing and many actors are doublecast. For film during a pandemic, that cannot happen. Every character has his or her own wardrobe. In addition, for safety precautions, the student actors have to measure themselves for fittings, do their own hair and makeup, and arrive on set in costume. The costumes and characters must be researched and the details exact. For a stage performance, you can use velcro or even tape to keep a costume in place for quick fixes and changes, and know that for the most part, no one will see that detail. For film, precision is necessary. This includes buttons and zippers. Camera angles can be all over and up close. Sometimes a character is actually sewn into the costume. But the joy is evident. We were thrilled to do something different. It is amazing; it looks like a proper movie. Something great is coming out of this pandemic. Watch it here: www.CharlotteLatin.org/prideandprejudice

IN MEMORIAM
The Charlotte Latin Community Celebrates the Life of Former Board Chair
John H. Robison 1930–2020 Special thanks to Parent of Alumni, Grandparent, and former employee Lucy Anderson for her contribution to this tribute.
C
harlotte Latin School celebrates the life of former Board Chair, John H. Robison, age 89. John, a lifelong Latin supporter, actively gave his time, talent, and treasure in his many roles in addition to his board work. He was an alumni parent, grandparent, and father of current Director of Admissions, Mary Yorke Oates ’83, who described him as a forward-thinker who loved the spirit, culture, and character of Charlotte Latin. For our school, she said, “He put his treasure to work.”
Former Head of Lower School Claudette Hall served closely with Robison on the Headmaster Search Committee in 2000. She found him to be very wise and a good listener, and the way in which she described him became a common thread among many colleagues and friends: “He was quiet, but when he spoke, it was clear that he was a man of deep thought who expressed what he was thinking brilliantly. He always kept the best interests of Latin as a priority.” Hall was deeply grateful for the Lower School Counselor position made possible by the Robison-Oates Endowment.
In the business community, Robison was an esteemed icon. He analyzed and mobilized, studied issues, and listened. He did not fear risk and took action. “John was an executive banker working for American Trust, NCNB, and Banker’s Trust of South Carolina before establishing his career in the executive search business. John’s firm placed top-level executives nationally and internationally and achieved recognition from Fortune 1000 Corporation’s Top 100 Recruiters. He loved networking and opening doors for others, and while a no-nonsense deal maker, John was loyal, trustworthy, and well-respected. His founding of UVEST Financial Services was a testament to his uncanny sense of opportunity due in large part to the successful marriage of his long-time relationships with community banks and his keen sense of timing as trading regulations shifted,” his obituary states.
In addition to Charlotte Latin, Robison was also a passionate booster of Charlotte, serving in organizations such as Queens University, UNC-Charlotte, The Ben Craig Center, The Scottish Bank, and Union Seminary. He was a long-time member and elder at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
Fellow trustee Jim Barnhardt was Robison’s successor as Board Chair, and describes, “He led the Board with a recognition of the unique needs of the school. His leadership and philanthropy will be greatly missed.”
In 1992, John and his wife Rooney established The Robison-Oates Counseling Fund, offering counseling and learning resources for students in the school’s three divisions. And from 1995–97, he led Latin’s Board of Trustees as Chair.
16
Robison was a family man and as his daughter described, “unabashedly proud of his grandchildren.” He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rooney, his sons, Rob and his wife Catherine Robison, Steve, Worth, his daughter Mary Yorke ’83 and her husband David Oates, and six grandchildren: Curry Robison, Stephen Robison ’05 and his wife Bria, Scot Robison ’07, Harris Oates ’12 and his wife Meagan, John Oates ’15, and Annabelle Oates ’18.

OUR SPACIOUS CAMPUS
Q.
What can a school accomplish with 128 acres, more than 20 facilities, dozens of volunteers, state-of-the-art technology, a nimble faculty, masterful and thoughtful scheduling, and the support of a community?
A.
We can do school, in person, during a pandemic.
“This year, we have made a number of significant technological investments to facilitate hybrid learning properly. One of the biggest is the Swivl investment. Swivl cameras are essential to allowing us to communicate with our students at home.” – Ed Tech Chair Alan Becker
When Head of Lower School Mark Tayloe first addressed Parents’ Council in September, he noted that the Lower School alone was utilizing 45 learning spaces.
“The Inlustrate Orbem Building, for many reasons, has brought us the means to have school when so many others are not having it, because we have plentiful, adaptable space to maintain safe distancing, even when the weather is inclement. Every square foot added has allowed for a ripple effect and the much-needed repurposing of older spaces and created an environment to the whole school’s benefit.” – Head of Upper School Lawrence Wall 17

The Possibilities Are Endless
Tanya Whitner and Alan Oliver Parents to Blake ’32
As parents and members of the Charlotte Latin community, we believe it is our responsibility to continue the tradition of giving that has afforded our son the excellent faculty and facilities Charlotte Latin provides. As donors, it is always encouraging to see your contributions at work through the construction of new facilities such as the McIntosh Leadership Center, and through the investment in technology and safety measures that have allowed our son to continue his education through these uncertain times. We are also mindful of the investments that are not as readily noticed. One of these investments is financial assistance. Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Latin’s students are indeed full of life. Every student we encounter exudes the love of learning, eagerness to help others, and “Honor Above All” that makes Latin a firstrate educational institution. We hope that our gift supports Latin’s goal of providing financial assistance to qualified students. Charlotte Latin is located on a beautiful campus where the possibilities are endless. It is an environment where students not only learn, but also thrive. It is a community that ensures that students can be their best selves no matter what inspires them. Latin celebrates diversity; the dedication to promote a more inclusive culture for our child and others truly moves us. Through our collective support, we guarantee that this legacy of excellence will continue to soar. There is no greater gift that we can give than to make certain that our children’s futures are brighter than ever!

VISION2020 DONORS
SUPPORTING HEALTHY MINDS AND BODIES The Strength Center dedicated by the Middendorf/Anderson Family By Kristin and Marty Middendorf Parents to Brock ’21 and Kayla ’23 We have always appreciated how Latin carefully and thoughtfully plans for its growth and balances academic, athletic, and artistic priorities. When we were considering Latin for our own family, we were impressed that all of these areas were equally valued and supported. The school’s expansion over the last 12 years — from the Inlustrate Orbem Building to the Howard Levine Athletic Campus to the Horne Performing Arts Center — shows just how much Latin values educating the whole child. With equal importance, The Nest and Extended Day help attract, retain, and support Latin’s amazing faculty and staff.
Pictured above: Brock ’21, Marty, Kristin, and Kayla ’23 Middendorf & grandparents Mary and Bruce Anderson with their family plaque at the Strength Center dedication ceremony on October 5, 2020. Pictured on right: Grandparents Patricia and Frank Middendorf reside in Florida but proudly support Charlotte Latin School.
Both of our parents, Mary and Bruce Anderson and Patricia and Frank Middendorf, are strong supporters of education and give back to their grandchildren’s schools, their own alma maters, and to underserved schools in their local communities. While we don’t often stop to think about the impact we make through our multi-generational family giving, we feel blessed to contribute to a school we love and that has provided an outstanding overall educational experience. There was no question in our minds that we wanted to contribute to the Vision2020 campaign. The wellness priority was meaningful to us because wellness and mental health are in the headlines every day. A state-of-the-art facility like the Strength Center supports our athletes’ needs and offers all students a place to work out, de-stress, and build healthy minds and bodies. In addition, we are a sports family! Frank played football, Bruce played basketball, and Marty played hockey at the college level. Latin just celebrated 50 years. By supporting Latin today, we can all help ensure it continues to be a sought-after, high-performing academic institution for decades to come.

HAWK STRONG A Conversation with Keith Brunnemer ’93 The new McIntosh Leadership Center, a hallmark of the Vision2020 Brunnemer Family campaign, was once known to our alumni as the 100/200 Building. The hallowed halls are now transformed and connected to Latin’s iconic walkways by a bridge named Alumni Way, honoring the many alumni who generously support the Vision2020 campaign. What inspired you to support Alumni Way? As I reflected on Latin’s 50-year history, I thought of all the people who contributed to Latin’s growth and success over the years. In particular, I was inspired to give in honor of three women who were important in my life and at Latin, and whom we have lost: Anna Kennedy ’93 (in 1993), Sunny Harris Hutchinson ’93 (in 2018), and Evangeline McMahan (in 2009; mother of Debbie Frail ’88, Eddie McMahan ’93, and Julie McMahan ’97). They, along with their families, made a tremendous impact on the Latin community. Why is it important for Latin alumni to give back? Our gifts pay forward the outstanding experiences we were fortunate enough to have. One of the Vision2020 campaign priorities is investing in financial assistance, so by supporting the campaign, my gift helps provide access to a Latin education for families without the means to achieve it on their own. What are your hopes for Latin’s future? The quality of the new facilities is the most impressive part of Latin’s growth since my time as a student. Looking ahead, I want to see Latin continue the pursuit of academic excellence while also focusing on developing grounded and well-rounded leaders who make a positive impact in their communities. Greatest Latin memories? Mr. Starner’s math class; Coach Mac’s pre-game speeches, and the walk down the hill to Patten Stadium on Varsity Football game nights. Want to learn more about how you can leave your own legacy at Latin? Alumni gifts of $1,000 or more will be permanently recognized on Alumni Way. HOPE, HEALTH, AND KINDNESS AN INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN COLASANTI ’00 By Mallory Evans ’18
Dr. Jonathan Colasanti ’00, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University, serves as the Medical Director of the Infectious Disease Program (IDP) at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where he resides with his family. In this critical time of COVID-19, Dr. Colasanti recently imparted wisdom relating to his professional experience and memories of Charlotte Latin with fellow alum Mallory Evans ’18. ________ When asked how COVID-19 impacted his profession over the last six months — especially when working with patients initially thought to be at a higher risk — Dr. Colasanti first noted the early missing key factors of testing and data. In a setting that pushed essential workers to the limit, direct lines of communication and support emerged as essential for navigating the chaos. Above all else, Dr. Colasanti and his team prioritized the safety of their patients and staff as the situation and available information evolved. The critical need to remain present while addressing fears became evident to Colasanti as he navigated both patient care and the well-being of his staff. His clinic treats a population with high rates of comorbidities that confer high risk from COVID-19. In order to protect this vulnerable group, his team adopted and increased practices such as telehealth, mail-order pharmacies, and home visits. As COVID-19 disproportionately affected minority populations, ensuring high-quality care was a priority. New infections, mass loss, and the increase in cases challenged healthcare workers’ morale. When asked what he gained from his Latin education, Dr. Colasanti noted integrity and accountability. Mentors like English teacher Maria Klein and Varsity Basketball Coach
Jerry Faulkner instilled important lessons and encouraged his sense of intellectual curiosity. He recalled a poignant 1996 The Grady Infectious presentation in Thies Auditorium by LaGena Disease Program provides comprehensive Lookabill Greene living primary and specialty with HIV. This key care to more than 6,000 un- and underinsured moment ignited his persons with HIV. passion for healthcare and HIV awareness. The opportunity to hear speakers — like author and humanitarian Elie Wiesel and former Secretary of State Colin Powell when Dr. Colasanti was a student — allows Latin students and the community to connect with the broader world. Asked his wisdom for the Latin community, Dr. Colasanti advised we maintain hope, cautious optimism, and public health prevention measures. He emphasized that face coverings provide essential protection and mitigate respiratory viruses. Dr. Colasanti also shed light on the added mental health impact that COVID-19 has had, and the importance of creating safe outlets for students. While deceivingly simple, Colasanti underscored the value of kindness and support. In an increasingly virtual society, it’s necessary to rely on our interpersonal relationships and connections. Charlotte Latin benefits from a vast alumni network, and Dr. Colasanti and his work with people with HIV and infectious diseases embody the opportunities beyond graduation. Nothing matters more now than focusing on health and well-being.
Mallory Evans ’18 studies English with a concentration in American Literature at Barnard College of Columbia University. Her passions include music and art which she utilizes in her professional and extracurricular work. She develops designs and promotional material for Bacchanal, Columbia University’s premier music organization as well as Alpha Chi Omega. She loves bridging her creative interests with important causes to support the greater New York community.

FIRST GENERATION AMERICANS AND ACADEMICS A REFLECTION BY JUNKO TAKEDA ’94 (excerpted)
JUNKO TAKEDA ’94 and her husband, Mark Schmeller, live in Syracuse, New York, with their son, Takeshi and Junko’s father, Kenichi. A graduate of Duke University and Stanford University, Junko was recently promoted to full professor of history at Syracuse University. As a first generation American and daughter of educators, Junko reflects on her experiences and path to a career in higher ed as a woman of color: My department voted to promote me to full professor. I’m the first woman of color in the history of my department to reach this point. I was born in Japan and grew up in the post-Civil Rights South. I was an undocumented alien until I reached 14, when I was legalized. My parents struggled to make ends meet. When I started first grade in 1982, I didn’t speak English and Charlotte Latin provided a personal language tutor and substantial financial aid.
(Left) Junko Takeda ’94 with her late mother and grandparents. (Right) Junko Takeda ’94 and her son, Takeshi, on a recent research trip to Paris.
When I declared my major at Duke, the woman I hoped to have as an advisor for European history said, “You should do Asia.” I found another mentor to direct my thesis on French colonial liberalism in Algeria. I was the first in my family to graduate from a 4-year college in 1998. At Stanford, I was my advisor’s first female Asian-American student to complete a Ph.D. in French history in 2006. I was the first Asian American hired in SU’s History Department in 2006. When I arrived, a distinguished professor commented that when he came to SU, they didn’t hire “people like you.” Others told me Asians “don’t count” for diversity. I know I’ve enjoyed more educational privileges than most in the US. A little over 30% of our population have college degrees. It takes at least a quarter century for a freshman to reach full professorship at a research university, assuming a straight path to graduate school, immediate employment, and consistent productivity. The challenges of diversifying academia is not only a question of hiring and retention. It’s one of how to make higher ed accessible and worthwhile to underrepresented students who experience inequities from the moment they step on campus. Given the realities of this country and profession, it doesn’t surprise me I have had to claim many “firsts” across the years.

One such initiative may involve an Alumni of Color Network to build community through networking opportunities and engage with identity and inclusion issues. If you are interested in being involved at any level, please email sally.smith@charlottelatin.org.
