CONCEPT Hue is an exhibition set up to showcase art and design work on the theme of colour, in particular the primary colours.

Open to all practices, the aim of Hue is to show the range of art and design work that can be created under a restriction of using a singular colour. Primary colours were chosen as they are the foundation for all colours. Each person who wants to submit will be assigned a colour to create a piece of work in. The pieces will be curated and displayed in the exhibition, held at LS6.

RESEARCH The main research for this brief was into how colours and in particular primary colours are used in conjunction with one another.

In fig 1, the colours are muted and pale.

Placed into shapes, the colours give the piece a sense of youth, however due to the exposed structure of the shapes they have a purpose. The combination of shape and colour is interesting as this would normally seem juvenile but the overall execution is sophisticated.

In fig 2, the bold primary colours are in ellipse form. The simplicity alongside the boldness of the colours leave the piece to speak for itself.

In fig 3, the colours are more abstracted by having a low opacity given to them, they blend in with the green of the background. The placement of text within the poster is interesting as it does not detract from the colour or placement of the shapes. fig 1 fig 3 fig 2

IDEAS Initial ideas for the brief included the use of squares in the designs. As the focus of the exhibition is on colour, ideas based on paint swatches and Pantone swatches in particualr were formulated.

In Pantone swatches, the colour is the primary focus and the white strip at the bottom of the swatch holds the text. The text is arranged in a hierarchy so that it doesn’t detract from the colour but still gives vital information. This similar style was translated into initial sketches, using squares or blocks of colour in the ideas for flyers or leaflets.

Experimenting with composition within theses sketches led to a few designs being mocked up digitally.

D E V E LO P M E N T After intially experimenting with blocks of colour inspired by Pantone and paint swatches, the direction of the advertisements began to take more from research into primary colours and their use in conjunction as a palette.

Combining the colours with simple shapes suited the bright and modern feel. An issue that was overcome in this stage was the colour choice, by muting the colours slightly this allowed them to harmonise together and refrain form looking too juvenile, especially in conjunction with the shapes.

Using circles instead of squares hailed from the research into primary colours in art and lead to a more fun and experimental style.

PRODUCTION Flyers for Hue have been printed on a lower quality stock, due to the number of flyers that will be in the print run. A large amount of flyers printed on high quality stock would be costly and useless as the flyers will not be physically held. Also if they were hung up in an outdoor environment the weather would likely affect the flyers, rendering a higher quality stock pointless.

Creating gifs for advertising on social media added dimension to the project as ooposed to static posts. Creating variations of gifs in Photoshop will incline more people to interact with the posts and hopefully submit artwork to the exhbition.

The advertisements for open submissions will be printed on vinyl to act as temporary advertisements.

E VA L UAT I O N The range of advertisements created for the Hue exhibition could’ve been created to a higher standard, however the running theme of primary colour as well as circles keeps it consistent. The call for submission advertisements utilise the circle as the main feature and create a bright bold advertisement your eye is drawn to. By sparing the details of the exhibition within this advertisement, the viewer is left wanting to know more, and will email to clear the mystery around the ad.
