Week 2 - Jim Photography
Wordweb
For every word there was within the list that we had gotten in week 1 (repulsive, attractive, appropriate, inappropriate, slow, fast, excessive and sufficient), we had to make some photographs. The photography really inspired me to start thinking about my environment, about images that I could make in everyday situations.
Before making the mood board I decided to make a wordweb. It helped me very much to select the proper images for my mood board.
Sketches I chose the words slow and excessive, so I particularly sketched bigger cutlerythat would allow one to eat slow, but to eat big amounts of food. Nature was something that inspired me very much, when sketching. I was very inspired by leaves, animals, flowers and water. I didn’t think of usage that much, I focussed on form. Also I wasn’t limited by knife/fork/spoon. I made some combinations
Mood board In this ‘slow’ mood board, I used a lot of dark colors. I also used some lines that ran throughout the images. With hindsight I can conclude that the line of the images was there, but that not every image had to be in there. For example the images on the left bottom of the mood board were rather excessive (to stay in terms).

Week 2 - Charlotte Photo’s
Sketches
We got the assignment to make pictures form the Eight words: repulsive, attractive, appropriate, inappropriate, slow, fast, excessive and sufficient. In week after we got this assignment I looked around me everywhere I was to see if there was a situation I could take a picture of. I chose the best ones per word. I got the feedback that the colors in my attractive picture were too dark and not attractive enough. Also did I got the feedback that the pictures of appropriate and inappropriate need each other to bring the words over. I totally agree with this feedback, I wasn’t indeed that happy about the attractive photo.
I made a lot of sketches of all the three different cutlery. At the moment I made the sketches I thought more about ways to use them than about the form. This made it that I had very strange forms of cutlery. Mood board The first weeks we also got the assignment to make a mood board that communicate one of the eight words which I named above. I took the word inappropriate because at first I had very little inspiration and then I found a few inappropriate pictures which gave me ideas. I really enjoyed to make the mood board. My feedback on my personal mood board that next time I can better not use persons because you associate them very fast with famous people which could bring the wrong mood over.

Week 3 Words
This week we were divided in pairs, each pair got its own four words which we needed to make a mood board and scrap cutlery. Our words where: attractive, appropriate, sufficient and excessive. Group mood board
- - -
mood board which makes it attractive. Not too much contrast which is not at tractive. The shapes need to fit into each other, which is appropriate and sufficient too. We need to take care of the lines that flow through the mood board.
Than we started to sketch all kinds of shapes that our we drew from the inspiration of our mood board.
By making the mood board we started with a list of requirements which we wanted our mood board to have. These were: Scrap cutlery - - -
All pictures categorized and with a white space in between which communicates appropriate and sufficient The pictures need to have busy patterns which makes it excessive. The colors need to be matching and need to pull you to the middle of the
For the scrap cutlery we collected a lot of scrap that we brought all together, and then we searched for possibilities to put materials together or for shapes that already could be used for cutlery.
Week 4 Sketches
Wordweb
This week we also made sketches. The sketches were now more focussed on the words that we had gotten, as opposed to the sketches in week 3. Some of the sketches we had made in week 3 we used as a source of inspiration for our new sketches.
We chose to make a wordweb, just like Jim’s in week 2. In this way we could organize our thoughts about the words better and find images that corresponded with the words.
Form exploration: Clay
This time we chose to make a mood board that was more minimalistic, so we decided to cut down the number of images. In this way we could achieve the word ‘appropriate’ better. For the attractive part and the sufficient excessive part of the mood board we used what we had learned in week 3. Ordening the main pictures in simple squares and using a lot of color and contrast on the other side resembles the excessive, sufficient balance. The black swann in the middle is the central point of the mood board, making it look attractive.
While we were claying we weren’t as inspired from the clay, as we were from the scrap material. So now we decided to look more at our sketches, from the sketches were created the clay shapes.

Week 5
Finished digital mood board
This week we finished our digital mood board. Because everyone was already very positive about our last mood board we haven’t changed that much, only the contrast of the beak of the swann could be higher and the lines between the two pictures with water could be better, so we replaces one water picture and we made the contrast higher. Everyone liked the lines in the mood board but was shocked about the contrast with the black background. Eventually
we haven’t changed that because it had more to do with the screen at that moment. Final form cutlery We also make the final form of our cutlery. We choose to do this in foam because it is easy to form and it didn’t take very much time. We made a spoon which looks attractive and appropriate and has a sufficient action (so one is able to eat just enough). We used our mood board as inspiration for the spoon, so some
forms of the swann came back in the spoon. Such as the round forms, the form of the beak, and the feathers on the back of the swann. Also we made a knife which looks attractive and appropriate and has an excessive action, this piece of cutlery was also inspired by our mood board as it had the swann shapes too. The knife is very big which makes it excessive but has also very little hand bars which allows use in an appropriate way.

Week 6
Final form & material cutlery
When we were looking for ways to shape our final cutlery, we came to the idea of using fabric to create a shape that would look very polished. We used old stockings and pulled them around our foam materials that we had made in week 5. On forehand we adapted the forms so that they would be more coherent and would fit better to our mood board. Then we used Paverpol, a fabric hardener, to make the fabric stick, and to make it more solid and waterproof. Then we used a golden paint powder, to mix with the fabric hardener. We chose for the color gold, because of the attractiveness of this color, and the luxury it suggests. Food We baked some muffins with a pink color to test our cutlery with.
Reflection Jim Before I started this assignment, I was very anxious about making mood boards. I wanted to learn alot about making mood boards. Especially for brainstorming I think moodboards are a very useful tool.
During the assignment I have even become more inspired. I particularly liked the week 2 deliverables, in which we had to make photographs that represented the 8 words that we had gotten. On the right there are some photographs that I made for the word ‘slow’. From this moment onwards, I became very interested in photography, I even purchased some equipment to make better photographs. Also, creating prototypes out of different materials was really helpful for me. The usage of scrap material is definately something that I will remember for future use. The waste material was not only cheap, but also already shaped, like this it was easier to think about forms. The material did speak to the imagination, whereas clay for example is a material that has to be formed entirely by oneself.
Sketching was something that I enjoyed doing on forehand, but I did it mostly with photoshop. I have learned that paper and a fineliner give more freedom when drawing, because there is no way to erase what you have sketched. As I am responsible for putting together the report and designing the layout, I learned to work with InDesign. In conclusion I did not only reach my goal and have a greater knowlegde about selecting, editing and putting together images for a moodboard, I also became inspired for photography, use of material and sketching on paper.

Reflection Charlotte At first I really enjoyed this assignment, it was very nice to rate things with the whole group. And to give each other feedback was very helpful for me.
I had no specific goals for this assignment, is was more that I wanted to develop in the competency area Form and Senses. I never thought about the form of a product so deeply and that it was possible to show so much aspects, or words in such a little picture. It really made me think about shapes around me and also about how I could shape the things in my project and my other assignments in such a way that it communicates what I want it to communicate. In the mood boards you see on the right is clearly development visible. I’m very glad with the steps I made in the competency area Form & Senses with this assignment. The working together with Jim went very well, we both had a lot of ideas about what our mood board should look like and by discussing our ideas we came to a mood board on which we both were glad. This also went that way by making the cutlery, we choose out of the sketches two models we liked the most, and both made one of them. So I also developed on the competency Teamwork & Communication. Now I know that working together this way works very well.
