All these innovative ideas will soon be real at Siam Discovery Centre’s Eco Project. The shopping complex launched this yesterday. It hopes to reduce negative effects on the environment.

The police academy is for the first time training female investigators. Police spokesman Watcharapol Prasarnratchakit says more cases involve women today and it’s appropriate women investigators work them. The next intake is in February next year. Each academy class accepts 40 students from the lower ranks with at least a Mathayom 6 certificate. Next year, 10 of those will be women. They must be aged 21 or under. Watcharapol says the police are seeking women crowd-control unit members, too. The force is looking for 123 new members of this unit. Applicants must be at least 165 centimetres tall and possess an undergraduate degree.

Teachers on tick Cash-strapped teachers will be offered state loans so they can pay off debts. The government is providing Bt800 million to fund the lending. An Education Ministry team tasked with solving rising debt among teachers says each loan can be up to Bt200,000, at 6 per cent. Education Minister Somchai Wongsawat says the maximum term of the loans is eight years, or 96 months. Teachers must have been employed for five years, have a good disciplinary record, have not declared bankruptcy or borrowed from the teachers’ fund before.

HAVE FUN AT THE FLORAL FAIR The Nai Lert Park annual fair is taking a more funfilled approach this year, and calling itself the Flower Carnival. To advertise the event organisers paraded naked models covered with orchids. The carnival is between August 22 and 24. The hotel will turn its four-and-a-half rai of private park into a permanent orchid garden, featuring more than 250 species. Orchid expert Rapee Sagarik is setting up the garden, worth around Bt40 million. The brainchild of Thanphuying Lursakdi Sampatisiri, an ardent plant and flower lover and honorary hotel chairperson, says the event has grown from “just a flower show” into a public and social affair. It raises Bt38 million for charities. This year the money is going to the Kidney Foundation of Thailand.

Participants this year include leading flower arrangers and top business people. Social celebrity and florist Sakul Intakul, party organiser Tinakorn Asvarak, JSL boss Lawan Kanchat, Siam Paragon executive Supaluck Umpujh, Central’s Yuwadee Bicharnchit, designer Polpat Asavaprapa and writer Chitra Kornantakiat are all taking part. Other activities include flower-arrangement demonstrations, celebrity fashion shows, a superstar concert, an afternoon tea concert with Jennifer Kim and friends, cooking demonstrations, a photography even, a shop-till-you-drop bazaar and a plant market. There will also be a special demonstration of sogetsu floral arrangements by Madame Kako of Japan. D A I LY X P R E S S

tireless worker for the preservation of Mekongregion wetlands has been recognised with a prestigious award. Mahidol University Assoc Prof Sansanee Choowaew is one of three Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award winners. She receives the equivalent of Bt330,000. The others are David Pritchard of the UK and Switzerland’s Denis Landenbergue. Sansanee is recognised for her “considerable” contributions to wetland management, education, capacity building, and training in Asia. She’s been involved for more than 15 years. She initiated, led and participated in many wetland-management training and research programmes. Sansanee serves on policymaking committees in the Mekong region. She is a great teacher and networker and involved with communities, valuing traditional wetland knowledge and culture. “This is something our country should be proud of,” Natural Resources and Environment Ministry chief Saksit Tridej says. “She is one of just three winners and the only Asian.”

PROF SANSANEE IS RECOGNISED FOR HER ‘CONSIDERABLE’ CONTRIBUTIONS TO WETLAND MANAGEMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN ASIA. The Ramsar awards were established to honour the contributions of individuals, organisations and governments around the world towards promoting wetland conservation. Meanwhile, wetland expert Harnnarong Yaowalert says 61 wetlands in this country are internationally significant. “Their management plans need an environmental-impact assessment,” he says.

The attack was a chilling imitation of a similar incident early this month, when a Palestinian driver went on a rampage with his earth-moving vehicle on a Jerusalem street, ploughing into vehicles and pedestrians, killing three and wounding dozens before a soldier shot and killed him. The identity of the driver in yesterday’s attack was not clear. There was no claim of responsibility but Israeli police called it a “terror attack”. The attack took place in downtown Jerusalem, several hundred metres from the hotel where United States presidential candidate Barack Obama was supposed to stay yesterday as he kicks off a visit to Israel.

disappearance of martial-arts star Panyom “Jaa” Yeerum has spun out a rumour that he’s in financial trouble, but this is nonsense. The man known internationally as Tony Jaa merely seems invisible because he’s working real hard to finish “Ong Bak 2”. It’s his directorial debut, and it’s supposed to premiere in December. Still a lot of kicking and punching to be done apparently. A Sahamongkol Films spokesperson says the actordirector has been sent into deepest Khao Yai to shoot some footage and can’t find his way back out of the jungle. Once he’s done, they’ll send somebody to bring him home for a press conference.

ast Saturday’s “One-Way” concert didn’t see rock titans Silly Fools and Ebola go head to head in a musical duel as fans had been led to believe, although they did jam briefly during their separate shows. That didn’t bother the more than 1,000 rock disciples who turned out to Hua Mark Indoor Stadium though, they screamed, moshed and danced throughout the show. Ebola opened the concert, lighting up the stage with firebombs and roaring into “Sang Sawang” and “Withee Thang” off their latest album “Way” before taking fans back to the old days with “Khem Thit” and “Karn Jaak La”. Fans, most dressed in black, sang along to “Klub Soo Jud Rerm Ton” and “Sing Thi Chan Pen” and jumped up and down to “Sak Wan”, which

wrapped with a electrifying solo from Silly Fools’ guitarist, and “Get Out”.

Audience response Silly Fools chose a Matrixlike backdrop for their set, which opened with “Satree Mai Lek Nueng” and “Rao Pen Khon Lueak Ang” from “The One”, their first album with new singer Benjamin Tuffnell, and more firebombs. The audience was quiet at first but started jumping around to “Nueay Laew” and “Stay Away”.

Although the rock quartet had problems getting the audience going with their newer songs, the audience responded well to older hits like “Nam Lai”, “Ji Ja” and “Wad Jai”. The drummers of both rock bands each performed solos, then handed over to Silly Fools’ original drummer and Ebola’s singer who jammed on “Mual Moo Pluk Jai”. Silly Fools closed out the concert with highly charged performances of “Ngo” and a reprise of “Rao Pen Khon Luek Ang”.

Tony Jaa: Neither invisible nor broke. He’s just busy making a movie.

Awards are crap anyway Oscar winners keep their tro-

phies on the mantel over the fireplace, right? Or in a nice display cabinet behind glass? Not Emma Thompson, who won her first Academy Award as best actress in “Howard’s End” and another for scripting “Sense and Sensibility”. She keeps both of them in her bathroom. We didn’t want to ask why.

More than 10,500 devoted fans showed up for the concert, which took place on two magnificently lit stages. The sound system worked without a blip and even though the two stars had a few problems moving around the smaller stage, fans enjoyed the opportunity of getting up close and personal with their heroes. The duo travelled through time with a 26-track set list, starting from the early days of

their collaboration and bringing back many fond memories of songs recorded with other Bakery stars. Screams rang out when the backup band of Thai and foreign musicians played the first notes of the opening track, “Chao Ying”, and applause greeted “Busaba”, rearranged with Latinstyle rhythms and with an outstanding guitar line that brought to mind Carlos Santana. Nop Pornchamni jammed with the duo on “Yak Ja Khor” while Groove Riders’ frontman Burin was joined by rapper Joey Boy for his cover of “Hormone". arina, Cortina and Cherry – names like these used to go down fine with car buyers but those days are over. Such monikers would almost certainly spell financial ruin for modern car manufacturers who opt for the exotic, mysterious aura surrounding names like Tiguan, Touareg and Qashqai. The people who come up with these weird and wonderful tags call themselves “verbal designers” and the names they conjure up must be easy to pronounce, marketable all over the world and be free of negative connotations. That’s a tall order considering that 100,000 different car names have already been legally registered. In the 1960s the names of

cars were easy to remember and tended to reflect the status and upward social mobility of those who drove them. Increasing prosperity in the 1970s combined with a desire to travel saw a proliferation of names which conjured up sunny Mediterranean climes – think the Ford Capri or the Volkswagen Scirocco. The 1980s were more sporting and while Boris Becker and Steffi Graf dominated the world of tennis, VW relied on the association with upmarket leisure pursuits to help sell the Golf and Polo. The end of the East-West conflict in the 1990s saw a trend towards futuristic names like Astra, Omega and Mondeo. Nowadays the car companies hope that by using names with recurring letters buyers will associate them with a

particular manufacturer’s “family" of models. French maker Citroen has Saxo, Xantia and Xsara while Toyota of Japan has dropped Corolla, Starlet and Carina in

favour of Auris, Yaris and Avensis. “A name is an instrument, a way of conjuring up an image. It doesn’t actually have to mean anything,” says Germany’s leading car expert

Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer from Gelsenkirchen Technical University. “All that matters is that it goes down well with the customers.”

Shrimp, meet chickpeas Are there ever enough ways to eat shrimp? Here’s one you may not have tried. Consider it a kind of summer stew with a subtle Indian flavour. It tastes good served warm with jasmine rice, or cold accompanied by toasted pita triangles. BY BONNIE S BENWICK THE WASHINGTON POST

Gingered Shrimp with Chickpeas and Spinach Ingredients 1 pound

large peeled and deveined shrimp (fully thawed frozen shrimp will do) 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon ground cumin Pinch cayenne pepper 2 cups water

THE WASHINGTON POST

Ginger root, peeled 2 small cloves garlic 1 small onion 6 to 8 sprigs coriander 10 ounces spinach leaves 1 14-ounce can of chickpeas 1/2 large lemon

Directions Mince the ginger and garlic in separate piles and finely chop the onion. Chop the spinach and the coriander leaves, discarding the stems. Cut the lemon half into five wedges. Toss the shrimp in a bowl with some of the salt. Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until the oil shimmers.

Add the shrimp and cook for about two minutes, turn them over and cook another minute or two, until not quite cooked through. Transfer to a plate and squeeze one of the lemon wedges over the hot shrimp. Return the skillet to the stove, reducing the heat to medium. Add the remaining tablespoon of

oil, then the onion. Sprinkle with salt to taste and cook, stirring once or twice, for about five minutes. Add the ginger and garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for a minute. Next add the cumin and cayenne pepper and cook, stirring, for 20 seconds. Then add most of the water,

the chickpeas and the remaining salt. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for five minutes. Use a potato masher to crush about half of the chickpeas in the skillet, then add the spinach and cilantro. Use tongs to fold them into the mixture. Cook for

two minutes, until they’ve wilted. Return the shrimp to the skillet. Cook for a minute or two, adding the remaining water if needed. Be careful not to overcook. Divide among individual bowls and serve with the remaining lemon wedges on the side.

Today’s Birthday: You’re competitive and creative, ready to take on whatever comes your way. You can bask in the limelight and take one of your ideas to the next level. Travel, learning and putting yourself on the line will pay off if you can keep the momentum flowing. The more contact you have with people from distant places or different backgrounds, the more you can promote what you do best. Sagittarius ***** (Nov 22-Dec 21)

What’s so funny?

Adam Adam is overjoyed that his daughter has volunteered to help him weeding. Usually weeding is a boring task that results in backache. And how do you know which plants to pull out? Which plant is a weed and which is not? Adam has an easy explanation for this, “A weed is a plant we don’t like.” But like for many other children, dandelions are plants that Adam’s daughter likes. They are nice and fluffy, and if you blow on them, a big cloud of little seeds on parachutes sails away with the wind. This is a lot of fun even if her father would call a dandelion a noxious weed. — Horst Baelz

England resumed at 50-2 overnight and needed to bat for at least five more sessions to save the game, but managed less than three. Tamarine books ticket to her fourth Games with an unexpected wild card By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam D A I LY X P R E S S

ennis darling Tamarine Tanasugarn has won a widcard entry into the Beijing Olympics. She becomes the 51st national athlete to book a ticket for the Games after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) invitation. It’s the fourth time she’s been to the world’s greatest sporting extravaganza. The invitation fax was sent to the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, offering a special place for the veteran to join this

Games. Previously, the world No 38 had been denied a wildcard for the Games and had not been on the ITF alternate list. As a result of certain withdrawals from the Games, vacancies are available in the women’s singles 64-place list. The ITF decided to award one to the veteran because of her extraordinary grasscourt season. She won a title in Holland and reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Tamarine’s entry now brings to 13 the number of disciplines Thailand will compete in. She

aekwondo exponent Chonnapas Premwaew breathed a huge sign of relief after it was revealed that her injury was not serious, clearing the way for her to compete at the Beijing Games. Chonnapas, one of the three fighters fielded at the Games, underwent a medical check-up at the Siriraj Hospital after joint pain forced her to miss training in the past week, raising concerns that she might be unable to compete. However, Chonnapas, a contestant in the 57kg category, has been given the green light to participate in what will be her maiden Olympics after it was diagnosed that the injury was not as serious as feared.

Refuelling hopes

“I can’t believe this is my fourth Games. It’s been 12 years already. I’m honoured,” says Tamarine, whose Olympics debut was at Atlanta in 1996. She paired with Benjamas Sangaram to reach the doubles quarter-finals twice – in Atlanta and Sydney 2000. “I’m a bit surprised as I had given up hope already. But unlike the Grand Slams, the Olympics will be tough from the first round as they select only the best 64 players compared with 128 in the Majors,” said Tamarine who just resumed her training this week after resting her

injured right arm for a fortnight. “I’m glad to be the first woman to play in four Olympics. I have no other choice but do my best in my fourth Games which could be my last,” adds Tamarine, who has not moved beyond the singles second round in her past two attempts. However, she will have to reshuffle her programme due to the late invitation. She was planning to compete in Canada next week, and will have to withdraw from two events in the US to take part in the Olympics and conclude the itinerary at the US Open.

“She [Chonnapas] can do light training, focussing on body strengthening,” her doctor says. “It’s not a serious injury. The pain she felt was from an inflamed muscle. That should not be a problem. Now, there is nothing to be concerned. “I believe her morale will be a significant factor in determining if she will have a successful campaign,” the doctor adds. Chonnapas says she felt better after treatment. “The doctor gave me a lot of encouragement. I will follow his advice during the preparation. “There is no problem with coach Choi Yeoung-suek, too, as he understands the situation and tried to help me in arranging the light training programme. “All I have to do now is to stay in proper physical shape and get ready for the challenge,” Chonnapas said.

few days after Moriya Juthanugarn wrote a new chapter by becoming the first girl to win the Junior Open, the biennial 54-hole championship for Under16s, in England. Contesting in the girls’ Class A division, the 16-year-old Patcharajutar posted a total of four-under par 284 to claim a threestroke victory over American Danielle Frasier. Having returned home on Monday night, Patcharajutar was still basking in the glory of her biggest achievement. “I’m proud to win for the country. But, it’s more special this time because I won the title which the world No 1 Tiger Woods won when he was young. “I’m delighted to see my name and our national flag put alongside Tiger Woods’s at the course,” Patcharajutar said. “The competition was definitely not easy. The course is difficult, given its tight fairways. I’m thankful to my coach, who helped me draw up a game plan for the four days of the event.” However, Patcharajutar, who sealed two gold medals at the last SEA Games, turned her attention to a title defence next year, when Laos hosts the regional event for the first time. Thailand’s success at the Championships was not limited to Patcharajutar. The 12year-old Phinnarat Lumboonreung won the Class C division held at Lake San Marcos Country Club & Resort after securing a fourstroke victory by registering a score of five-under par 211.

ON TARGET Jakkrit and Tanyaporn hope to hit the bull’s eye as they aim for gold in Beijing By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam D A I LY X P R E S S

T

he national shooting association has pinned its hopes on pistol specialists Jakkrit Panichpatikum and Tanyaporn Prucksakorn to make a big bang in Beijing. Head coach Peera Piromrat says the two are expected to make it to the finals, judging by their recent performances in World Cup meets and practice results. “The two shooters have shown steady improvement in their weekly tests. Jakkrit scored 584, which is the world’s third best in the men’s 10m and Tanya fired 586 in the 25m which is also amazing,” says Peera who will have Sasithorn Hongprasert and Thanyalak Chotiphaibunsin joining him for the Games. Jakkrit, a former World Cup bronze medallist, fired 560 to take the 15th position in the men’s 50m pistol in April’s World Cup series in Beijing and shot 578 to finish 20th in the 10m category in the Milan meet last month. The 35-yearold, trained by his father and former national shooter Manit, is currently No 23 in the 10m and No 27 in the 50m in the world rankings. But all eyes will be on teen

Tanyaporn

sensation Tanyaporn who produced two top-eight finishes in World Cup meets this year. The 18-year-old, ranked 24th in the world, scored 583 to reach the 25m final in Beijing and shot 386 to reach the 10m final in Milan. Nevertheless, when it came to the crucial stage, her con-

centration fell apart and she had to settle for eighth in both meets. “At this point, we have set the final as the primary target for all shooters. Once they are in the final, anything can happen. Even world champions choke in the final. So we might have a chance,” says the chief coach. The four-member national team is the biggest the country has ever sent to the Olympics. Thanyalak and Sasithorn, the 2006 Asian Games gold medallists, will go into action in the women’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle three events.

He has earned 15 gold medals at World Championships (which is also a record). His plan for Beijing? Phelps will be competing in eight events and no one is betting against swimming’s greatest star. His coach Bob Bowman says, “His greatest strength is the ability to relax and focus under pressure. As the pressure gets higher, Michael performs better – that’s very rare.”
