n my work with blind people, I’ve witnessed how difficult and lacking in opportunity their lives can be. Everyday activities are tough for the blind. The decision to become an eye donor means that we can help bring light into the lives of the sightless once we have passed away. The idea of “giving to others” has been neglected in our society. Becoming a donor is a way to practise the idea of giving.

With the gubernatorial election scheduled for January 11, all candidates have electoral laws to observe – and that means no throwing parties or giving special gifts. “If they go to Christmas or New Year parties, they must make sure they don’t hand out any gifts,” said Bangkok Election Committee chairman Ping Rungsamai yesterday. “And if they are invited to the stage, their speeches should not appear intended to woo votes.” Another election official, Sumeth Uppanisakorn, advised all 14 gubernatorial candidates to study the electoral laws carefully and abide by them.

Play fair, pollsters Among the high-profile figures who have registered to run for governor are MR Sukhumbhand Paripatra of the Democrat Party, Yuranan Pamornmontri of Pheu Thai Party, and independent candidates Kaewsan Atibodhi and ML Nattakorn Devakula. Ping said the EC had asked the pollsters to conduct the opinion polls with objectivity. DAILY

old you had just two years to live, how would you feel and what you would you? Suthasinee “Tew” Noiin, 52, is facing just such a situation due to colon cancer, but instead of falling into depression, she is happily sharing her life with underprivileged kids she calls “her children”. “I have to detox every day and make my mind peaceful,” she says. “Sometimes I’m so tired I can’t stand up.” But this doesn’t make her hopeless. “Money, a long life, or reputation don’t lead to a meaningful and happy life,” says Tew. “Helping others does.”

More than 20 years ago, a newly graduated Tew left her life of convenience in Bangkok to help abandoned, sexually violated and HIV-infected children in the Northeast.

A mother to youngsters She first established a project for children and juveniles, which helped 22 drug addicts and moms with unwanted pregnancies. Now she is “mother” to 112 children and youngsters at Ban Homehug in Yasothon. Half of her charges are living with HIV, and several have completed their undergraduate education and gone back to take care of others. “The children are my best

medicine in tough times. I try to get up whenever I hear their voices,” says Tew. The spotlight fell on her life after she starred in a TV commercial for an insurance company and was then invited to tell her story on TV shows. “I’ve decided to publicise the plight of Ban Homehug’s children so that they’ll be taken care of in the future, when I won’t be around,” she says. “It’s been a success, as there are more people visiting and donating goods. But the economic downturn means money is only trickling in. Flooding in the South has led to 27,562 cases of water-borne disease in the past 25 days, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday. Some 242 mobile medical units had assisted flood victims in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat from November 19 to December 14. “Hong Kong foot” accounted for the largest proportion of patients, at 39 per cent, followed by flu at 32 per cent, while 1,900 people suffered severe stress and insomnia, said Public Health permanent secretary Prat Boonyawong-wiroj. The ministry had responded by sending 134,000 sets of medical supplies to the region, he said, adding that locals wading through floodwater should watch out for the flu-like symptoms of Leptospirosis.

Border market boost From December 30 to January 4, the Rong Kleu Market on the border with Cambodia in Sa Kaew province will become a night market, open until midnight, said the provincial governor yesterday. After that, the market would be open until midnight every Friday and Saturday in a bid to boost Aranyaprathet’s economy, said Sanit Naksuksri. The province would promote easier availability of the seven-day border passes that enable the market’s mostly Cambodian vendors to operate on the Thai side, he added.

Many of the Indian police they encountered did not even have walkie-talkies. The Mumbai gunmen not only overwhelmed security forces with their weaponry and willingness to die, but also with their sophisticated use of technology, security experts said. Even the commando unit

For decades, astronomers have speculated about the possibility of a black hole at the Milky Way’s centre. But because of the billions of stars which lie between Earth and the hub of the galaxy, it has always been impossible to see what is actually at the centre. “Undoubtedly the most spectacular aspect of our long-term study is that it has delivered what is now considered to be the best empirical evidence that super-massive black holes do really exist,” said Professor Reinhard Genzel. – DPA

Elephants don’t get any more venerable than the beasts of old that cavort with dinosaurs in Nakhon Ratchasima

Dug up in Surin province, a skeleton of an elephant is an impressive sight. Prehistoric pachyderms lumber once again inside the museums of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University’s Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources, millions of years after they roamed Isaan.

e have here an elephant that’s been waiting to see you for 16 million years. You really shouldn’t disappoint him. Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University’s Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources has reopened its Bt160-million triplet of museums after several months’ refurbishing, and they’re way better now, special thanks to some multimedia magic. As well, they are now the biggest fossil museums in Asia. The elephants and huge pieces of petrified wood mingle with dinosaur bones, all “natives” of the Thai Northeast. “The elephant-fossil museum is one of only seven in the world and the only one in Asia,” says institute director Pratueng Jintaskul. “We’ve highlighted a lot of the display areas, such as the one for the petrified wood, which has a specimen that’s

1.75 metres long, and magnificent wood opals and elephant fossils as old as 16 million years. “The biggest fossils of carnivorous dinosaurs ever found in Thailand are here, up to 10 metres long,” Pratueng adds. “The allosaur and duckbilled hadrosaur are the ones found in Nakhon Ratchasima.”

It’s petrifying! The jazzy new additions include a 360-degree video animation showing dinosaurs in battle, and moving dinosaur models. “We want to keep improving the museums, because they provide a scholarly service for students. The plan is to make the petrified-wood museum the best in the world by 2011.” Pratueng expects the three museums to attract 150,000 visitors a year by then, a huge jump from the pre-revamp tally of 12,000 visitors. “Right now you can visit for free, and it will be free for the next several months. We’re in talks with the university council about setting an appropriate admission fee.”

Some stylish words for Fall Autumn brings a rich harvest of new style guides. Here’s a review of the best

ucky has built its name on being the go-to magazine for the how, what and where of shopping. In this guide, the glossy's editors take on the much trickier task of mastering style by identifying 10 archetypes, which range from such

unexpected ones as Euro Chic and Posh Eclectic to the more typical Bohemian and American Classic. For each, you’ll find an iconic item, profiles of trendsetters and 40-odd quintessential pieces. Some of the suggested basics are obvious (a leather motorcycle jacket for capturing rock and roll), but others are head-scratchers. Is a brown suede poncho “really” necessary for nailing California Casual? Still, the welledited take on each look's es-

sentials is fascinating, and I eagerly examined even my leastlikely styles before creating a mental shopping list of the Arty Slick staples my closet is sorely lacking. What the book is sorely lacking, though, are notes on whether a piece is Alexander Wang or Alice + Olivia. Shortcomings aside, Lucky's guide is a fun and focused way to decipher and hone a style, whether yours leans toward a Gamine/Bombshell blend or heads straight for Mod.

For the iconic look dubbed Arty Slick,

Lucky recommends a drapey twotoned shift, like this silk dress from Dolce Vita (US$209 at Shopbop.com). “The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style,” by Kim France and Andrea Linett, identifies 10 fashion archetypes, from Euro Chic to American Classic.

hailand’s 12th-richest woman last year, according to Forbes, Nishita Shah is combining her business savvy and fashion sense in a line of versatile city wear for modern women, and it’s not all buttoned down.

The managing director of the GP Group doesn’t strut around in a high-powered suit – she prefers wearing clothes that are as vibrant as she is. Her new line, Nsha, offers a modern look you can wear everywhere. With $350 million in her bank account, Nishita can afford any clothes she wants, but the Nsha label is something she believes might take the world by storm. At the GP Group her father founded, she manages the staff and oversees its shipping, pharmaceuticals and hospitality arms. It’s a broad spectrum that requires versatility. “I want clothes I can just throw in a suitcase and get going,” Nishita says. Though she admits she doesn’t always have time for the gym, her label will soon include a sports line ranging from yoga outfits to golf gear. She’s teamed up with designer Chomwan Weeraworawit, who has an obsession with making the ideal corporate style. As a result, Nsha has a uniform “look” to its sophisticated togs, among them the Bianca jumpsuit, which is a hooded dress based on fashion icon Bianca Jagger’s image, and a trench coat that makes quite a statement all by itself without the need to mix and match. Nishita won’t say how sales are going so far, but 5 per cent goes to the Queen Sirikit Centre

for Breast Cancer, and it’s expected to receive Bt500,000 this year. Unlike most collections, a lot of the line is made using recycled supima cotton, which lends the clothes a soft, love-worn feel. Fluffy French terrycloth softly drapes over the body, lending

the sense of movement and flow. Another key element is Nishita’s favourite colour, hot pink, which contrasts nicely with the dark greys of the brand’s winter uniform. Nsha will in the coming year expand into Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Los Angeles and New York.

I slicked on three shades from the collection. A few strokes of the frosty-raspberry Love Alert and I was ready to work it down a red carpet. Three swipes of the copper-flecked Miss Dynamite at 8 survived two meals, frequent swigs from a water bottle and an afternoon of chatter. By 4, there was only a trace of the gloss, but

the golden sparkles lingered. It was the milky-pink Sugarrimmed, however, that won my affection. Even though this gloss is slightly pricier than the brand’s standard slicks, for the holidayparty circuit, it’s a coat I’d be remiss not to don before heading out the door. Nars Eye Shadow Duo I can appreciate a good pairing when I see one. But a quick scan of my eye shadow cache reveals a common component: the ugly duo. There’s a deep, rich bronze paired with a sallow nude, copper married with a searing mint green. Maybe it’s a marketing ploy to sell more palettes or simply a case of

chronic mismatching, but either way, I’d nearly given up on finding the perfect pair. Leave it to the geniuses at Nars to restore my faith in colour coordination. The Duo Eyeshadow in Jolie Poupee offers two entirely wearable shades of vibrant purple: a sheer blue-violet and a deep, shimmering amethyst. The lighter shade yields a soft wash of colour, making my lids eye-catching yet office-appropriate. The darker shade adds depth to the crease, but applied with just a little black eyeliner, it gives green and brown eyes some extra pop. Finally, a dynamic duo that’s just that. f you’re looking for a compact digital camera that’s packed with features and is also fun to use, then the Casio EXZ300 is just the ticket. The top model in Casio’s Exilim range, the EX-Z300 boasts a 10.1-megapixel imaging sensor, 4x wide optical zoom lens, three-inch LCD screen, advanced Face Detection and Auto Shutter technologies, CCD shift AntiShake system, and a brand new makeup function. That doesn’t mean it will actually reach out and paint your face, but it certainly does the next best thing – just flick it to Make-up Mode and it smoothes and brightens skin tones, giving faces a Photoshop-style airbrush job.

The EX-Z300 has 38 Best Shot scene modes, which will help users to obtain great images in a wide variety of shooting situations. In our test, we found it cap?tured sharp and clean portraits, scenery shots, terrific close-ups of flowers as well as sharp night scenes. The provided Night Scene and Night Scene Portrait work well without a tripod. The only blip we found was that the coloured light bulbs we shot were not as true as those captured by a digital SLR camera mounted on a tripod with long exposure time and narrow aperture.

That said, the EX-Z300 should allow you to have fun shooting the celebration lights for the holiday. And it also has Face Detection software, which allows you to record your family members’ faces into the camera. Set to Family priority, the camera is able to distinguish them from a crowd, and will set focus and exposure to their faces. The camera can also record high-definition movies at the 1280x720, 24fps. The EX-Z300 comes in pink gold, black and silver and retails for Bt11,990 complete with 2 GB SD card and a bag.

f you often have to use your mobile phone in a noisy environment, cancel out the excess sound with an ant. Specifically, a BlueAnt Z9i. This Bluetooth headset with dual microphones and the latest in Voice Isolation Technology is very effective, providing powerful noise suppression and echo cancellation.

I tested it with my Nokia N80 and had no problems connecting to the headset. Then I stood beside a busy road, activated the Max Voice Isolation Mode and my conservation partner reported she couldn’t hear the noisy engines though she occasionally caught the occasional horn of an impatient motorist. The Standard Voice Isolation mode worked well inside a noisy office with more natural sound quality. BlueAnt says Z9i also reduces wind noise. I tried in out while riding my bicycle but this time my conversation partner reported being able to hear the breeze rather than my dulcet tones. That said, the headset works very well in most environments

and it has excellent sound quality. I could hear the voice of my conservation partners loud and clear. Another good thing is that Z9is is very light and comfortable to wear. Although I wear eyeglasses, the headset’s earpiece hooked comfortably over my right ear. Z9i has only three buttons – multifunction, volume up and volume down. You’ll need to consult the manual to learn how to activate several features of the headset, especially since it can connect to two mobile phones at the same time and also switch calls between the two phones by placing one on hold. The battery provides 5.5 hours’ talk-time or 200 hours of stand time. It’s retailing here for Bt3,990.

Hendry blames ‘chaos’for exit Five-times UK champion Stephen Hendry blamed his first round exit from this year’s edition of snooker’s second-most impor-

L

uiz Felipe Scolari is at a loss to explain Chelsea’s dismal home form and fears that if it does not improve they can forget about winning the English Premier League title. The Blues have claimed victory in just three of their nine home league games this season, while winning all eight of their matches on the road. Chelsea manager Scolari is mystified as to why his side are finding it so hard to conquer opponents at Stamford Bridge, where they have won just two of their last seven games. “It’s difficult to explain what’s happened. I am frustrated,” the Blues boss said. “It’s important for us to win at home but now

we’re playing better away than at home and I need to change this idea. “We need to win two or three games here and after this, maybe we’ll play the same as in the last five or 10 years,” added Scolari, who in October saw Chelsea surrender their 86match unbeaten home league record with a 1-0 loss to current table-toppers Liverpool. “But now all the teams come to Stamford Bridge and play back with 10 players within 40 metres. There is no space for my players and sometimes my players need to improve and dribble, try something different. “At this time, it’s difficult for us,” Scolari said. “Sometimes we don’t have the quality to beat the

other club and we need to accept that.” Chelsea blew their chance to overtake Liverpool at the top of the table here on Sunday. The Blues drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge with West Ham, managed by Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, in a fiercely-contested London derby. Wales striker Craig Bellamy gave the visitors a 33rd-minute lead with a well-taken strike but France forward Nicolas Anelka rescued a point for Chelsea six minutes after half-time with his 100th Premier League goal. The result left Chelsea in second place, one point behind Liverpool, while West Ham are 16th in the table, a point above the relegation zone. “If we draw or lose but play well I am not frustrated, but in the first-half we did not play well,” Scolari said.

“We worked very hard and that drained us. The gap of 12 points is important, but Madrid will never consider giving up. The hype is something that we cannot control. We were not that bad before and we are not that great now, everyone has to look for the middle ground.”

SOMETIMES WE DON’T HAVE THE QUALITY TO BEAT THE OTHER CLUB AND WE NEED TO ACCEPT THAT. Luiz Felipe Scolari The 60-year-old former Portugal manager, who guided his native Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup, said Chelsea were passing the ball around the midfield but failing to create

chances in front of goal. “After our goal we tried to pressure and open the midfield and play with three strikers. But the strikers are in a line. “I need to train them more and the players need to understand that three players can play in attack – but not be fixed there. They need to come back and work without the ball.” Chelsea went into the match having beaten Romania’s CFR Cluj 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to reach the last 16 of the Champions League. Zola said he thought the strains of playing European football were taking their toll on England’s “big four” clubs, who have all progressed from the Champions League group stage. “When you play a Champions League match, it’s very demanding, it drains you,” the Sardinian said.

“There’s quite a few players who are running out of their contracts. What do you want me to say? “None of us have been offered a contract so there’s no bad guys here, I’ve not refused anything. “As soon as they speak to me obviously I’ll have more news for you.” Owen opened the scoring when he expertly chipped advancing England goalkeeper David James. “If you keep a clean sheet then you’re always liable to nick one, then they had to come out a bit more and we managed to pick them off a bit. “To nick the first one was good, it was a great ball by Jonas [Gutierrez], the first touch was just a little bit heavy, I was stretching for it a bit, and then I managed to dink it over the ‘keeper but obviously I took a right clattering. I thought he [James] was trying to give me a broken leg or something.”

ewcastle striker Michael Owen gave little away regarding his future after sending the Magpies on the way to a 3-0 win against Portsmouth at Fratton Park here Sunday. The England international celebrated his 29th birthday by opening the scoring in the 52nd minute of a match that saw Newcastle record their first away league victory this season in the Premier League and so climb out of the bottom three. But any joy the travelling Magpies’ fans felt at seeing Owen score for the northeast side would have been tinged with concern following reports the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward could be leaving St James’ Park. Owen is due to hold talks with Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear next week regarding a new contract. He is presently on a £103,000 deal which expires at the end of the current season. Newcastle could decide to cash in on their prize asset during the January transfer window rather than suffer the financial loss that would come if Owen left as a free agent at the season’s end. “Obviously, there’s a lot made of it,” Owen told Sky Sports.

helsea’s “greatest” player had only one regret after being serenaded by Blues fans on Sunday. West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, who was overwhelmingly voted Chelsea’s greatest player in a 2003 poll on the club’s official website, didn’t acknowledge the reception during his team’s 1-1 draw with the Blues at Stamford Bridge. “The first 10 or 15 minutes I couldn’t understand what was going on, the crowd was singing my name,” Zola said. “I’m just sorry I did not wave. It’s fantastic that they did not forget. It was unbelievable.” “It’s been a great day. I’ve had a fantastic reception and it was a great result.” The appreciation was mutual. When Craig Bellamy scored in the 33rd minute to put Chelsea, which needed victory to overtake Liverpool at the top of the league, in danger of a third home defeat this season, Zola sat motionless and refused to celebrate. Zola, who played for Chelsea from 1996 to 2003, said he didn’t rejoice “out of respect for the people here who have given me so much.” “My team was excellent, they really played well,” Zola said.

Old Lady dump Milan in six-goal thriller to stay on Inter’s heels

uventus kept their own title hopes alive while dealing a potentially fatal blow to those of AC Milan with a thrilling 4-2 victory at Turin’s Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. Juve stay just six points behind leaders Inter Milan, who beat rock bottom Chievo by the same score earlier in the day. Milan, who finished with 10 men after Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off on his return to his former club, are nine points back in fourth spot with the title now slipping away. Coach Carlo Ancelotti said defensive weakness had cost them. “What made the difference? We were too vulnerable at the back, we let them have too many chances to score,” he said. “The difference was in defence, we conceded too easily.” Juve’s two-goal hero Amauri claimed it was a fully deserved result. “It was a great match. We know that Milan are a great team and if we won it’s because we deserved it,” he said. “We knew how to put Milan under pressure.” Juve took the lead through an Alessandro Del Piero penalty after the striker himself was felled in the box by Marek Jankulovski. Juventus forward Amauri after scoring the team’s third goal against AC Milan. Abbiati kept his side in it at the beginning of the second period with smart saves from Claudio Marchisio and Momo Sissoko. At the San Siro Inter looked to be coasting two minutes into the second half when they led 2-0 but the Flying Pigs staged an unexpected fight-back to level things at 2-2 before Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted a late brace. That ensured Inter will go into the Serie A winter break in a week’s time at the top of the standings. But Mourinho criticised his players for taking things too easy. “In the first half we scored

straight away and then relaxed too much, as if the match was already over,” he said. “After Chievo equalised they hoped to win and we were afraid of losing but we managed to react and score two goals.” Inter were off to a dream start on three minutes as Brazilian full-back Maxwell cantered down the left on the overlap, took a pass from Dejan Stankovic, cut inside and rifled home right footed. It was a similar story at the start of the second period as the champions fashioned a brilliant goal through Stankovic, who finished off an Ibrahimovic flick from Maicon’s cross.

Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate for Manchester United to be the first British team to get their hands on the Club World Cup, one of the few trophies he has yet to win. United arrived in Tokyo yesterday after a long flight from London, hoping that the gruelling mid-season trip will not damage their Premier League campaign. “This is a very difficult tournament, different from what we were used to last time, but hopefully we can handle it,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity for us to get the team together in a serious competition because no British team has ever won it and it’s a big challenge to us.” He said winning the trophy would be important for the club and for the club’s record. “We feel we should have won more in Europe but having won the Intercontinental Cup back in 1999, we were the first British club to do it, and that's a prestigious piece of history for us,” he said. Sevilla’s Renato celebrates scoring against Villarreal.

razilian Renato was the hero again as Sevilla followed up their Real Madrid scalp with a 1-0 home win over title rivals Villarreal on Sunday to go third in the table. Renato had scored an 84thminute winner as Sevilla overcame Real 4-3 last weekend and struck on the chime of half-time to secure a valuable three points and they move level on

points with Valencia, eight behind leaders Barcelona. “If my facts aren’t wrong Villarreal only had one shot on our goal and that says a lot about my players,” enthused Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez. Villarreal slip to fourth and trail Barcelona, who defeated Real 2-0 in ‘El Clasico’ at Camp Nou on Saturday, by nine points. Atletico Madrid leapfrogged

city neighbours Real with a 2-0 home win over Real Betis on Sunday. Argentine duo Maxi Rodriguez and Sergio “Kun” Aguero grabbed a goal apiece as Atletico moved up to fifth, two points behind Villarreal, while Real slumped to sixth. Sevilla coach Jimenez stuck by the same system that defeated Real with Ivica Dragutinovic the only personnel change re-

placing Fernando Navarro at full back. Luis Fabiano and Diego Capel, two of their biggest stars, started on the substitutes bench to their dismay. “Sevilla’s goal was offside,” said Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini. “The mistake opened the game up for Sevilla and they started to play better. It was always difficult with one man less.”

ational coach Peter Reid has kept his faith in misfiring striker Teeratep “Leesaw” Winothai to lead the attack when Thailand square up with Indonesia in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Asean Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup today. Reid’s men, the tournament’s three-time champions, made a strong statement of their ambition with an imperious performance in the group stage, which saw them top Group A with maximum points from three matches, scoring eleven without reply in the process. Curiously, despite such a hefty number of goals, Leesaw, deemed the team’s top for-

claimed a 3-0 victory over Malaysia in the last group match. That means Leesaw, who is bound for a second-tier Belgian club, should start alongside ex-Manchester City player Teerasil Daengda up front in a 4-4-2 formation.

The 23-year-old Teeratep is hoping he can repay the faith Reid is showing in him by breaking his duck against the Indonesians to help Thailand take a significant step towards the final. “Against Indonesia, the game should be more open. I believe I will get more chances,” said Leesaw. “The atmosphere will be electric as we all know how passionate the home fans are. However, that won’t affect me – I like to play in front of a huge crowd.” Apart from the off-colour Leesaw, former Sunderland manager Reid has no cause for concern, given the team’s clean bill of health. The return leg in Thailand takes place in five days time. Channel 7 will televise the match live from 7pm.

INDIA’S INCREDIBLE WIN Classy Tendulkar guides hosts home with 41st century AFP, Chennai, India

atting great Sachin Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 103 as India achieved the fourth-highest run chase in history to stun England by six wickets in the first Test yesterday. The hosts surpassed the seemingly improbable victory target of 387 on a wearing wicket with 20.3 overs to spare on the fifth and final day to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Tendulkar swept off-spinner Graeme Swann to fine-leg for the winning boundary that also brought up his 41st Test century amid loud cheers from 30,000 home fans at the Chidambaram stadium. Tendulkar, showing the form that has made him the all-time leading scorer in both Tests and one-day cricket, anchored India’s chase for five hours, dur-

India’s Sachin Tendulkar, top, is congratulated by Yuvraj Singh after scoring a century and the winning runs. ing which he hit nine boundaries. “This is a very, very special victory,” said the 35-yearold Mumbai resident. “To score 387 is something to be proud of on a track where the ball was bouncing and jumping at the end. “I think it was a very, very important hundred because, I al-

ways say that if the team wins, then the hundred becomes very special and today this hundred was very important. “But cricket is a lesser thing compared to what happened in Mumbai and we are with those who lost their dear ones.” The first Test match in India since last month’s terror attacks

in Mumbai provided a thrilling finale with all four results – victory for either side, a draw or a tie – possible going into the final session. India required 83 runs from 40 overs and England needed six wickets in the last two hours of play, but Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh survived the second new ball to fashion a remarkable win. Yuvraj chipped in with 85 not out in a fifth-wicket stand of 163 with Tendulkar to dash England’s hopes after Kevin Pietersen’s men dominated a major part of the match with both bat and ball. Yuvraj, recalled to the Test side following the retirement of former captain Sourav Ganguly, made up for his first innings score of 14 by coming good when his team needed it most. The top three run chases in history are the 418-7 by the West Indies against Australia in 2003, 406-4 by India against the West Indies in 1976 and 404-3 by Australia against England in 1948.

Vettori not sold on TV replays New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori says the television replay system being used to review umpires’ decisions in his team’s current Test series against the West Indies needs to be reappraised. Vettori said he was concerned the system was not being used for the purpose for which it was intended – to eradicate incorrect decisions – and that too many borderline decisions were now being reviewed. “What’s happening a little bit is the 50-50 ones are coming into play and I don’t think that’s what it was invented for,” he said Two batsmen were given out after replay reviews. Vettori said the replay system should not eliminate the traditional process of allowing the umpires to give a batsman the benefit of the doubt. – A P

The 38-year-old Swede said an emotional goodbye to the game with a final-round oneunder par 71, but that was good enough only for a tied seventh place finish at six-under 282. “In the end, as I walked down the 18th fairway, I felt at peace with myself,” said Sorenstam. “I could feel the breeze on my face, and it was just a really comfortable feeling. I saw some players standing behind the 18th green; that gave me a tear. I saw my parents and my family ,and that brought tears, too.
