he popularity of nude calendars by alcohol companies has been growing each year since the economic crisis that they have proven to be a hit. This year, however, they have become a controversy, pitting a manufacturer against the Public Health Ministry.

Boon Rawd Brewery’s 2009 nude calendars for Leo beer is facing the wrath of the ministry, which says that it violates the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act of 2007.

“Nude calendars have become popular again since the economic recovery,” says Witawat Jayapani, president of DAILY

the Advertising Association of Thailand. “And alcohol sellers have bigger budgets to spend on making these calendars as part of their sales promotion.”

Bt3 million to pose nude In 1985, a famous actress received Bt100,000 to pose nude.

But during the economic crisis and with strong social opposition, alcohol companies did not gain as the desire for nude calendars waned, Witawat says.

Then, as lately as 2001, another famous actress reportedly bagged as much as Bt3 million for posing nude.

Prince of Songkhla University scientist who developed aquatic animal food technology that improves the fish-processing industry has been named Outstanding National Researcher by the National Research Council of Thailand.

Professor Suthawat Benjakhul of Prince of Songkla University’s Faculty of AgroIndustry has over the past 10 years conducted nearly 200 studies in a bid to develop the technology.

“Observing is an important skill for a researcher. When you face a problem, you have to think how to resolve it by using clear assumptions,” he says.

ideogames are not just for kids.

A new survey has found that more than half of American adults aged 18 and older play videogames, and that about one out of five play every day or almost every day.

According to the survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 53 per cent of American adults aged 18 or older play videogames, although the number decreases significantly with age.

Eighty-one per cent aged between 18 and 29 play videogames, 60 per cent of those aged between 30 and 49, 40 per cent of those aged between 50 and 64 and just 23 per cent of those aged 65 and older, the survey found.

Men are more likely than women to play videogames.

21-year-old woman accused of sending a vulgar text message to a 17-year-old girl is one of the first cases brought under a law against cyberbullying spurred by the suicide of a teenage girl following cruel messages.

The 2006 death of 13-yearold Megan Meier prompted Missouri lawmakers to update the state harassment law earlier this year so that it now covers bullying and stalking done through electronic media, like e-mails or text messages.

A handful of cases relating to electronic communication

have been filed statewide since the law took effect on August 28.

In one of the new cases, Nicole Williams is accused of using electronic communications to harass a teenager in a dispute over a boy.

Fictitious personality The 17-year-old girl received voice messages with lewd and threatening comments, including some threatening rape.

Williams told police others sent those messages from her phone, according to a probable cause statement.

In a landmark cyberbullying

trial last month, Lori Drew, 49, of Missouri, was convicted in Los Angeles on misdemeanor federal charges of accessing computers without authorisation.

Prosecutors said Drew and two others created a fictitious teenage boy on MySpace and sent flirtatious messages from him to neighbour Megan Meier, 13.

The “boy” dumped Megan in 2006, telling her: “The world would be a better place without you.” Megan hanged herself.

Now, about 45 states have updated their laws to address harassment through electronic communications or crafted new laws to respond to the concerns of cyberbullying or cyberstalking.

A suspected arsonist accused of killing 17 people in a fire in a Hong Kong karaoke bar has been charged with murder after 11 years on the run.

Choi Kam-fai will appear in a Hong Kong court today to face charges of murder and arson in relation to the fatal attack in which karaoke customers were burnt to death.

The 33-year-old is allegedly one of three members of a triad gang who hurled fire bombs into a crowded karaoke bar in January 1997. – DPA

Hilton robbed American socialite and heir Paris Hilton was robbed at one of her homes, with local media reporting that the burglar swiped US$2 million (Bt69 million) worth of jewellery and other valuables.

itter divorces, eccentrically named babies and a tragic death dominated the celebrity headlines in 2008 as Britney Spears began her long road to recovery after hitting rock bottom.

When Spears was rushed to the psychiatric unit of a hospital in early January it looked as if the New Year would echo the previous 12 months, during which a clutch of troubled starlets were rarely out of the news.

Spears’ long and tortured fall from grace appeared to be complete when she was wheeled out of her Los Angeles mansion strapped to a stretcher after a threehour custody stand-off involving her baby sons.

Yet the drama of the meltdown was surpassed just weeks later, when she was again rushed back to hospital – this time in a police convoy.

A dark night Mercifully, however, the hospital drama signalled the nadir for Spears, whose fortunes began to change for the better.

Her woes in January coincided with the death of Australian actor Heath Ledger.

The 28-year-old Oscar-nominated star of “Brokeback Mountain” was found in his New York apartment after an accidental drug overdose.

Crazy baby names Meanwhile, with Spears out of the limelight, the tabloids were able to return to one of their favourite story genres – the celebrity birth.

Nothing gripped the paparazzi quite like the arrival of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newborn twins in July.

The Hollywood power couple’s attempts to draw a veil of privacy over the births by relocating to the south of France were successful, and then in true A-List style, Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon were introduced to the world in a People magazine photo-spread.

As baby names went, the Pitt-Jolie monikers were among the least adventurous this year. From Bronx Mowgli (born to Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz) to Zuma Rock (Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale), no name was deemed too quirky.

“I’d say that this is the biggest double whammy since Moxie CrimeFighter [daughter of magician Penn Jillette] and Pilot Inspektor ‘son of actor Jason Lee],” said Linda Rosenkrantz, co-author of “The Baby Name Bible”.

Pleum is competing as an independent against the big political parties, and so did Chamlong.

Pleum is the election’s Candidate No 8, and so was Chamlong.

Chamlong polled more than 400,000 votes to win the race, and Pleum is praying like crazy.

Building on dreams The upcoming ‘Architect ’09’ fair draws attention to the profession’s involvement with community projects

he Association of Siamese Architects celebrates its 75th anniversary next year with a showcase that will see its members taking a good look at where they really want to be.

The “Architect ’09’ fair on the theme “Re-Vision” is scheduled to run from April 29 to May 3 at the Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Chief organiser Smith Obayawat says the time has come for Thai architects to re-examine their responsibilities.

“We are deeply affected by our fast paced lifestyle and suffer from an overflow of information and communication,” he says.

“Architects should serve the people and build dwellings rather than monuments that only satisfy their egos.”

Community service is the new ambitious goal for the association, whose ongoing projects include the Orphan Home, a collaboration with the Thai Red Cross Society, the Art for All Village, a housing development for the disabled where art is used as a tool to improve quality of living, a playground for a congested community in Min Buri district, and the preservation of Wat Pong Sanuk in Lampang province.

“Personally I find all the talk about the ‘green concept’ nothing but public relations propaganda.

Architecture is far more complex than that. What we really want is to create a saving energy building and to do we need more resources.”

Exhibition highlights at the fair include Phra Meru architecture, designs that emphasise His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy philosophy and how the association views the future.

hailand’s not short of spas – this much we know.

Anyone getting into the business had better have a unique selling point and top-quality services, says Vorravit Siripark, whose company Puri distributes the Panpuri spa and aromatherapy products.

“People are more sophisticated now – they know what they want – so the business is quite challenging and competitive,” he says.

“The Thai brands are strong in natural, oriental, exotic ingredients, but weak in packaging.”

Vorravit’s master’s degree in luxury-foods management from Milan, Italy, is paying off.

“My studies were very specialised, focusing on business, marketing and managing high-

end brand names. As a student I did research on the potential for spa businesses in Thailand, before the boom started.”

Panpuri has been offering top-quality spa and personalcare products, often customised, since 2003. They’re found in spas, resorts and department stores in 21 countries,

including in Europe.

The success of Panpuri, Vorravit says, begins with its name. Pan, or panya, is Sanskrit for “wisdom, the awakening of the mind”, and puri has multiple meanings in several languages.

In India it refers to the holy city of Orissa. In Bahasa Indonesia it means “palace”, suggesting luxury, and it suggests “purity” in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Panpuri adds Eastern sophistication, the subtle scents of its essential oils – jasmine, lemongrass, ylang ylang, sandalwood and more – and impressive packaging.

“I like to think of Panpuri products as having a personality,” says Vorravit. “It could be a Mister, Miss or Missus. If it happens to be a lady, she has many dimensions – elegance, sophistication, and yet a unique heritage in the modern world.

“I believe people can travel through time when they smell different scents. To me, the smell of jasmine reminds me of my childhood with my grandmother. She gave me refreshing drinks with jasmine blossoms floating in them.”

ayne Rooney came to the rescue as Manchester United beat South American champions Liga de Quito 1-0 yesterday to win the Club World Cup and lift one of the few trophies to have eluded them.

The England striker pounced in the 73rd minute after being set up by Cristiano Ronaldo, with United rallying to victory after Nemanja Vidic was needlessly sent off for a deliberate elbow early in the second half.

His goal gave them an unprecedented treble this year, with the English and European champions now able to call themselves world champions, helping silence those who have criticised the long trip here.

ristiano Ronaldo has all the attributes needed to become a legend with Sir Alex Ferguson tipping him to emulate the likes of Pele and Maradona.

The 23-year-old Portuguese winger, who beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to win the Ballon D’Or this month, has time on his side. “Cristiano is superb,” said Ferguson.

“He has timing getting into the box, ability with two feet – and you would never associate a Portuguese winger with such magnificent ability in the air. He is like an old-fashioned centre forward.

“He’s only 23 and still a very young lad and there’s a lot of things in his favour to go on and prove himself as a legend. The next few years, when he reaches 28 or 29, I think you will get your answers.”

Ferguson’s praise comes amid another row with Real Madrid over Ronaldo, with both sides trading barbs after reports that there was an agreement for the player to move to the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Working against Ronaldo reaching the same heights as Pele and Maradona is that Portugal don’t play as

much high profile football as Brazil or Argentina, depriving him of a world stage to show off his skills.

“When you have a star like this, a young player with such huge potential, they normally make an impact very early, which is what Cristiano has done,” said Ferguson.

“Pele scored in a World Cup semi-final as a 17-yearold. Maradona played for his country at 17. Cristiano was 18. All the signs are the same.

“What you don’t know about him but can say about Pele and Maradona is that their careers lasted for a number of years.

“They both played in two World Cup finals. Maybe Portugal do not have the same profile as Brazil and Argentina to get to finals, so you have to judge Cristiano in a different way.

“I’m always expecting more from Cristiano because he has such high expectations himself,” he said.

“Last season, his best scoring came in the second half of the season and he needs to recapture that. But I am very satisfied with the way he is playing.

“He always wants the ball and there are few wingers in the game who have an impact like him.”

lackburn manager Sam Allardyce is planning showdown talks with Roque Santa Cruz after the Paraguay striker revealed he wants to quit Ewood Park in the January transfer window.

Allardyce had made it clear when he was unveiled as successor to Paul Ince in midweek that he had no intention of selling his best players, so Santa Cruz’s admission that he wants to move on drew an angry response from his new boss.

Santa Cruz, who was missing from Allardyce’s 3-0 debut win over Stoke at Ewood Park with a calf injury suffered in training, will have to explain himself this week.

“Did it bother me on Saturday? No. Is it going to affect my night out? No. Will it bother me on Monday? Yes,” Allardyce said.

“I will sit down and see what the situation is. We will deal with it professionally very quickly.

“I think there is an issue but it is not going to be resolved tonight. It is not going to detract from a night out with a good friend on his 60th birthday.

ingaporean Lam Chih-Bing came up with a solid performance when it mattered most to hoist his maiden trophy on the Asian Tour in the US$750,000 Volvo Masters of Asia at the Thai Country Club yesterday.

Lam showed absolutely no sign of nervousness as he was chased all afternoon by a group of co-leaders that included Thai Chapchai Nirat and Australian David Gleeson. He fired a bogey-free round of five-under par 67 for a total 14 under-par 274 to canter to a two-shot victory over the Thai.

“I was never in danger of making a bogey today. At the first tee, I knew I needed to shoot a solid round,’’ said Lam, who became the first Singaporean to win the tournament, which was previously dominated by Thai, Indian and South Korean players.

It was an early birthday present for Lam, who will turn 32 next Monday. The Volvo Masters of Asia has by far been his biggest accomplishment and earned him the top prize of US$135,000.

“I have won a bunch of small ones but this is just unbelievable. It was such a jam-packed leaderboard and I’m just glad I went out and finished the job,” said Lam who had his parents, wife Sophie, daughter Tian Lei and countryman and golfing idol Mardan Mamat, congratu-

The Indian star wrapped up his campaign at the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia yesterday when he was officially crowned the 2008 Asian Tour’s Order of Merit champion, and said his next goal was one of the four most prized trophies in world golf.

“This has been the best year so far in my career,” he said after shooting rounds of 76, 70, 70 and 72 to finish in the middle of the field.

“I think I’ve got the game to win a Major. A lot of it comes down to the short game,” said Singh.

The son of Milkha Singh, who is a decorated Olympic runner for India, Singh said that despite his golfing achievements over the past three seasons, he still feels he has yet to measure up to his father’s iconic status.

“Dad is still a bigger name than me in India,” said Singh. “A Major under my belt, then I can sit at the same table as him.”
