Temperatures will continue to fall tomorrow and the day after, the Meteorological Department said yesterday.

The department’s statement said the mercury would drop 1 to 3 degrees Celsius and warned of strong winds and high waves in the Gulf of Thailand. The temperature in Bangkok fell to 14 degrees on Sunday night.

Frozen up North Chiang Mai weather bureau forecaster Pensiri Trisat predicted the North’s cold snap would get worse, with the mercury falling 1 to 3 degrees by Thursday. His Majesty the King will tomorrow become the first recipient of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)’s Global Leaders Award.

WIPO director-general Francis Gurry will present a medal to His Majesty at Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Klai Kangwon Palace.

The award is in recognition for the King’s inventions for rural community development and use of the intellectual property system to protect these works.

To date, more than 20 of his inventions have been patented.

tudy hard, do what you love and set high goals if you want to become an astronaut, kids were told yesterday – but don’t apply if you are scared of heights or cramped spaces.

These were the words of British Nasa astronaut Nicholas JM Patrick, who landed at Harrow International School, the Bangkok branch of his old London school, to give students a taste of what it takes to get a career in space.

“You have to study hard not just in academic subjects but also in everything that you’re trying to learn,” Patrick said.

His own favourite subjects were mathematics, physics and engineering – a preference that’s helped him get this far.

Path to the moon “The high goal I set myself when I was five or six years old was to walk on the moon and I still haven’t achieved it. But in trying to achieve it, I have a very interesting career.”

Patrick blasted off on board December 2006’s STS-116 Discovery Space Shuttle on a mission to help with construction work at t h e International Space Station.

Careful preparation, he said, was his key to success: “We don’t just Astronaut practice the Nicholas Patrick things we expect to do, we also practise procedure to handle all kinds of malfunctions and problems.

Looking down from space One student asked him how he felt when he looked down on the Earth from outer space.

“I couldn’t believe that I had finally made it into space after eight years training, or how beautiful the planet looked!” he answered.

His next trip to space will be with the crew of the STS-130, which is due to launch in December with a payload of the final pressurised components for the space station.

Looking further ahead, Patrick said he would like to be involved in the future of space travel as a teacher of a new generation of astronauts.

Police yesterday reported that nearly 40,000 Bangkok motorists ran red lights between December 30 and January 11.

Deputy city police chief Pol Maj-General Panu Kerdlarppol said the new cameras installed at 30 intersections across the capital had caught 36,642 motorists ignoring red lights.

Taxis accounted for 60 per cent of the violations and the cameras flashed most at the Ban Ma intersection.

So far, said Panu, traffic tickets have been sent out to 23,070 vehicle owners.

Fines should be paid within seven days, he added, or those caught on camera would face problems renewing their licenses and annual vehicle tax.

ens of thousands of people in a remote area in northwestern Burma face a food crisis after their farmlands were destroyed by a rat infestation, a non-governmental organisation said yesterday.

The infestation erupted two years ago in Chin state, which borders Bangladesh and India, and some residents were now receiving handouts, said Joseph Win Hlaing Oo, director of the Country Agency for Rural Development.

“We estimate that some 70,000 people in Chin state have been suffering from a

food crisis since two years ago because of rat infestation and drought,” he said.

“We started rice distribution to local people in the first week of this month under a food-for-work programme.”

Adding to the struggle A separate report by the UN World Food Programme said the rodents had destroyed 75 per cent of crops in the area and forced 30 per cent of the farmers to leave their fields.

“Farmers are reported to be struggling to meet day-to-day needs, resorting to edibles gathered from the forests,” the

n a ceremony alternatively as solemn and celebratory as the movie that won a leading four prizes – the rags-to-riches drama “Slumdog Millionaire” – the Golden Globe awards helped focus the Oscar race as it honoured the late Heath Ledger for his performance in “The Dark Knight.”

By winning trophies for best dramatic picture, director, screenplay and score, “Slumdog Millionaire” cemented its place as the awards season’s most beloved underdog.

The modestly budgeted story of an unlikely Indian game show contestant now has become not only a powerful Academy Award contender but also a minor box-office hit.

“We really weren’t expecting to be here in America at all at one time, so it’s just amazing to

be standing here,” screenwriter Simon Beaufoy said in accepting his honour from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Ledger remembered If “Slumdog Millionaire” provided the most joyous moments at the awards, Ledger’s posthumous win for supporting actor offered its most poignant.

Ledger died last January from an overdose of prescription medications, before “The Dark Knight” was released and became Hollywood’s secondhighest grossing movie, trailing only “Titanic”. “The Dark Knight” was the actor’s last completed film role.

“I for one will start to be able to look less at the gap in the future and the incredible place Heath made for himself with his talent and with his dedication,” director Chris Nolan said in accepting Ledger’s award for his performance as the Joker.

Rourke wrestles Ledger’s win was not unexpected, but in one of the surprising picks, Mickey Rourke was named best dramatic actor for his role as an over-the-hill grappler in “The Wrestler”.

The veteran actor’s wild offscreen behaviour nearly cost him the role. He was initially dropped from the film when producers couldn’t raise money with him in the lead, and he was recast only after his replacement, Nicolas Cage, and director Darren Aronofsky parted ways on the movie.

Foul language More of an extended, freewheeling and alcohol-soaked dinner party than most awards show, Sunday night’s ceremony may have reached new highs (or lows) for bawdy banter.

Rourke’s acceptance speech was peppered with mild pro-

fanities, Aronofsky made a joking (but nevertheless obscene) gesture toward Rourke, and “Slumdog Millionaire” producer Christian Colson uttered a four-letter expletive when music was cued up in the middle of his acceptance speech.

A few winners were surprised and flattered, including English actress Kate Winslet, who won for dramatic actress (as an unhappy suburban housewife in “Revolutionary Road”) and supporting actress for “The Reader” (in which she played a German trolley worker with a horrendous secret.)

“I was so shocked to win one. Honestly, I can’t believe it,” Winslet said after collecting her second trophy. “To have been here so many times and to have not won so many times. To win twice in one night …” said the actress. She was a previous Golden Globe nominee for “Little Children”.

One British commentator says the signs are unmistakeable.

Ask Snowy”, in a story ahead of Tintin’s 80th anniversary on Saturday. “What debate can there be when the evidence is so overwhelmingly one-way? A callow, androgynous blond-quiffed youth in funny trousers and a scarf moving into the country mansion of his best friend, a middle-aged sailor?”

he Golden Globes are a party and the stars came dressed for it. Sunday night’s red carpet in Beverly Hills was full of both classic Hollywood glamour and up-and-coming fashion trends.

There were lots of hues of ocean blues, tropical shades and sandy neutrals, strapless corsetstyle gowns, one-shoulder numbers and a little glitz thrown in.

The jewels — big chunky earrings and oversized necklaces — apparently are recession-proof.

Jennifer Lopez could have been a Globe statuette herself in her plunging V-neck, gold-bead gown by Marchesa. Penelope Cruz went for a more subtle gold in a slim column gown by Giorgio Armani Prive with the occasional beaded horizontal stripe.

hanks to the current wave of musical games, you can have your guests singing all night long.

For “Academy Fantasia” wannabes, there are karaoke games like Sony’s “SingStar”. For those of us who can’t carry a tune, there are instrumental games like “Rock Band 2” and “Guitar Hero World Tour”.

These familiar titles remain your best bets for a lively party, but there are some new contenders.

“Lips”, for the Xbox 360: “SingStar” has found a niche of karaoke-loving PlayStation owners, with hundreds of songs available for downloading. “Lips” has a long way to go to catch up, but it’s a worthy alternative for Xbox owners.

It’s easy to play: Just pick up a mike, pick a song and start warbling. You’re judged on timing and pitch, and you aren’t penalised much if you miss a note. Hardcore gamers may object to the complete lack of challenge, but karaoke’s more about having fun than trying to rack up high scores.

The 40-song set list is nicely diverse, from country crooners like Johnny Cash to pop stars like Beyonce and Rihanna.

“Ultimate Band” for the Wii: Less successful are two latecomers to the guitar game craze that began in

2005 with “Guitar Hero”. Both try to eliminate the need to buy fake plastic instruments. Instead you use the Wii controller to simulate holding a guitar or beating on drums.

In “Ultimate Band”, you choose notes with the Nunchuk controller and strum with the Wiimote. It never feels close to playing a guitar, although drumming feels a little more realistic.

“PopStar Guitar” for the Wii: This game comes with a doohickey that connects to the Wiimote, giving it four large buttons (like the five on a “Guitar Hero” guitar). You choose notes by pressing the buttons and strum by flicking the Nunchuk controller. It works fairly well.

Otherwise “PopStar” is a bland take on the now-familiar guitargame formula. The track list consists entirely of current teen-pop faves like the All-American Rejects and the Jonas Brothers. But the notes you’re asked to play often don’t match the notes you hear – the timing is all off.

merican rap singer 50 Cent, who knows a thing or two about guns, is the subject of a popular shoot-’em-up video game that on January 25 will have a sequel called “50 Cent: Blood on the Sand”.

Players get to be 50 Cent and lead the “G-Unit” – Tony Yao, Whoo Kid, Lloyd Banks and others – in battle in two war-torn countries.

The rapper is a media tycoon, taking turns running his business and firing 20 high-powered weapons on land and in the air.

Naturally, there’s a thumping great hiphop soundtrack – more than 40 tunes performed by “Fiddy” and the G-Unit – and also included are 10 music videos.

‘Pietersen tried to quit in India’ Kevin Pietersen first threatened to resign as England captain in India before Christmas, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) vice-chairman Dennis Amiss has said.

ir Alex Ferguson will savour the riposte provided by his players to Rafael Benitez’s criticism: a 3-0 win over Chelsea that puts Manchester United in the driving seat in the Premier League title battle could scarcely have been more sweetlytimed.

But the Manchester United manager is far too wily an operator to celebrate victory over any adversary prematurely.

So it was not entirely surprising that last week’s extraordinary outburst from Benitez was treated by Ferguson as if he were discussing the worryingly erratic behaviour of a distant, elderly relative.

Where Liverpool’s manager

had vented his anger over what he sees as his counterpart’s hypocrisy, bullying of officials and serial whingeing, Ferguson restricted his response to an expression of bemusement in a tone that veered towards the pitying.

“There was a lot of venom in what he has said and I don’t understand where it has come from,” the Scot said. “He is obviously disturbed about something. When he reflects on it he must realise what a ridiculous thing he is saying.

“But I don’t want to say anything else because all I want to do is keep my focus on my team.”

Sunday’s win means United will displace Liverpool at the

top of the table if they win their two games in hand, the first of which is a rearranged fixture at home to Wigan on Wednesday.

Having taken five points out of six from Chelsea and with home fixtures against both Liverpool and Arsenal to come, United are looking ominously well-placed at a time of the season when Ferguson’s sides traditionally hit their stride.

uiz Felipe Scolari is only one defeat away from the first full-blown crisis of his reign at Chelsea – but the Brazilian insists he will not seek be plunging into the transfer market in search of a remedy.

As they surrendered meekly in a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United here on Sunday, the Londoners looked a pale shadow of the side that pushed Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to the wire last season.

Devoid of inspiration going forward and calamitously casual in defence, Scolari’s class of 2009 suffer even more in comparison with the Chelsea sides that Jose Mourinho – who was in the VIP seats at Old Trafford – led to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.

But Scolari remains convinced that Chelsea’s current squad have sufficient reserves of quality to prevent United from claiming a third consecutive title.

Asked if Sunday’s defeat would force him to knock on Roman Abramovich’s door with a request for transfer funds, Scolari’s response was defiantly indignant.

“But when you have control of everything and your chief executive is powerful in the FA and things like this, then that is not mind games.

“Is there a conflict of interest with David Gill at the FA? “That is another fact. It is a fact that one person has a lot of power and control, and is on a lot of committees in the FA. To me that is very strange.”

ustralian Geoff Ogilvy led from start to finish to claim a six-shot victory in the Mercedes-Benz Championship yesterday, overcoming a choppy start to the final round before closing with a 5-under 68.

Former US Open champion Ogilvy was on the verge of an unseemly collapse, his six-shot lead down to one as he stood in the ninth fairway, when he drilled his approach onto the green and holed a 20-foot eagle putt to steady his nerves and send him on his way to victory at Kapalua.

With four straight birdies on the back nine to restore the margin, he sailed home to join Ernie Els and Vijay Singh as the only wire-to-wire winners since the season-opening PGA Tour event moved to Kapalua in 1999.

“I enjoyed the last 2 1/2 hours more than I enjoyed the first

World Golf Championships. He finished at 24-under 268, earned $1.12 million and moved up to No 6 in the world.

“When Geoff plays well, it never looks like he’s going to hit a bad shot,” countryman Adam Scott said.

Ogilvy had made only one bogey in the first three rounds, but doubled that count after this

first two holes yesterday.

With the Plantation course soft from overnight rain that lasted into the morning, Ogilvy missed the fairway to the right on the opening hole and couldn’t reach the green, missing an 18-foot par putt. He found a bunker with his tee shot on the second hole, blasted out to about 6 feet and missed that putt.

Just like that, his lead was down to three shots over Kim, who birdied two of the opening three holes.

And even after Ogilvy appeared to steady himself with an up-and-down birdie on the par-5 fifth, followed by another good pitch to 5 feet for birdie on the sixth, he was grinding.

He hit the wrong club on the seventh, came up short and took bogey. Then he missed his target some 20 yards to the right on the par-3 eighth and took another bogey.

“I’ve never had a six-shot lead before. It’s a pretty uncomfortable feeling, to be honest with you,” Ogilvy said.

nders Hansen birdied the final hole on Sunday to finish at 15-under 269 and beat Andrew McLardy by one stroke at the Joburg Open.

The Dane shot a 5-under 66 at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club East Course to hold off McLardy, who finished second for the

second time in three years after a 68. “I played really nice on the front side there hitting a lot of good shots so that was very good,” said Hansen, who had six birdies, including four straight from the sixth hole.

Hansen had a 20-footer for eagle on No 18, but he left it three feet short before sinking his birdie putt. McLardy birdied

espite beating Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday, Manchester United’s players were angry after a canny corner that Cristiano Ronaldo headed into goal was disallowed.

When United won a corner on the stroke of half-time, Wayne Rooney nonchalantly rolled the ball into the quadrant and then nudged it back out. The touch signified the corner being taken and the ball was left for Ryan Giggs.

It was virtually unnoticed inside Old Trafford and apparently the linesman didn’t notice it either because when Giggs ambled back to collect the ball – and then run it forward before delivering the cross to Ronaldo’s head – referee Howard Webb blew his whistle.

“I don’t think the linesman knew Wayne had taken a short one. I don’t know if Wayne had told him,” Giggs said. “I just jogged past Wayne and he said he’d took it, so it was clearly outside the D so I just ran across and took it.”

Rooney and Giggs reacted angrily after the goal was disallowed and confronted the linesman. “I don’t see what the problem was,” Rooney said. “I took the ball and rolled it out of the D ... the linesman got it wrong.”

Although Webb wouldn’t reverse his decision, Giggs floated in a traditional corner seconds later and Nemanja Vidic headed it in to give United a 10 lead. “Luckily we scored just after that,” Giggs said.

ormer England captain David Beckham admitted he was surprised to be handed a start on his debut for AC Milan in their 2-2 Serie A draw at AS Roma. On-loan Beckham was taken off a minute from time in a pulsating encounter that saw Mirko Vucinic, for the hosts, and Pato, for Beckham’s team, both grab a brace.

It wasn’t the dream start that Beckham would have wished for but he gave an industrial performance on the right of a three-man midfield and showed several glimpses of his passing range, crossing ability and even his sterling defensive work.

He had one shot on goal but his curled effort from outside the area lacked the pace to trouble Doni in the Roma goal.

“I enjoyed it immensely, I was surprised to start the game but given the chance I really enjoyed it,” he said.

Beckham began the match by staying deep and often leaving his team-mates to forage for-

ward but as the game wore on and he found his feet, he increasingly started to make typical bursting runs down the right flank, whilst also coming inside to see more of the ball.

He said, however, that the differences between Italian football and that in Spain or England were not so great.

“It’s similar, of course there’s more of a tactical level in Italy, there always has been that and there always will be but I think I adapted pretty well and I enjoyed it. Tactically we like to keep the ball in midfield and play the ball forward as much as we can and once you get into the game it opens up more.”

Beckham didn’t get a chance to strike one of his trademark free-kicks despite Milan having two opportunities around the edge of the box.

But with Ronaldinho and Andrea Pirlo in the side, the Englishman admitted he might have to bide his time before getting to set his sights. “Of course we all take it in turns, if one of the other players feels like he can score from a free-kick then I’ll let them do that but I’m sure I will get my chance.”

As for communication, Beckham, who speaks Spanish but not Italian, revealed he is having few problems talking to his team-mates.

World Championship runner-up Felipe Massa described the new Ferrari F60 Formula One car as “cute” after it was unveiled on Monday.

Massa was the first to test the 2009 Ferrari model – successor to the F2008 – which has been radically adapted to comply with new International Automobile Federation (FIA) stipulations aimed at encouraging overtaking.

“With all the new rules I was expecting a different type of car, like 10 years ago with big wings, so I was surprised.

The new F60 seems tiny, very compact and cute.”

The car is named F60 in reference to the number of championships Ferrari have participated in and becomes the 55th different F1 car designed by the Italian manufacturer. Most of the design changes have been imposed by the FIA in order to increase overtaking in a sport often lacking in excitement due to the difficulties in passing the car in front. – AFP
