kay, the economy is giving us a bumpy ride right now, but why not treat it as a challenge. Good things will happen if we work harder, create more ideas and encourage the morale of the people around us. Getting serious about the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle – is something else we can do. Where there’s a will there’s a way, as the saying goes.

esco Lotus’s new utility-bill payment service is “fair”, and designed to help reduce the cost of living during the tough economic times, the company said over the weekend. Dr Darmp Sukontasap, senior vice president, countered criticisms from competitors that Tesco Lotus is introducing the service below cost. “As for complaints that were sent to the Commerce Ministry, we explained our position to Competition Commission officials.” “We don’t foresee any problems since we have always conducted our business with transparency and we have been fair to everyone,” he added.

‘Below the real cost’ A complaint by 7-Eleven charged that Tesco Lotus was offering the bill-payment service below the estimated real cost of Bt13plus per transaction. Tesco denied the charge and said that at Bt5 per transaction, it would get a return on its investment within two years. The over-the-counter bill payment service has been around in Thailand for about 15 years. The business is said to have a turnover of about Bt5 billion, with 7-Eleven dominating the market so far through its 7,000 outlets nationwide. DAILY

he recent spike in global gold prices has caused casualties in Thailand. Gold shops in Bangok’s Yaowarat district – famed for top-quality gold products – discontinued business during the Chinese New Year for the first time in history, planning to reopen tomorrow. Only Lang Hong opened its doors yesterday, quoting gold ornament at Bt14,900 per 15 grams. Jitti Tangsitpakdi, president of the Gold Traders’ Association of Thailand, was adamant that the closure was due to price volatility rather than the high volume of resales from consumers cashing in on

the higher prices. Before the Chinese New Year holiday break began on Sunday, gold shops in Yaowarat had sold a total of close to two tonnes of gold, worth around Bt6.8 billion. Yet, on Saturday – the last day of business before the break – local gold prices jumped Bt450 in a single day, to Bt14,600 per 15 grams.

Shutting shop “World gold prices have been jumping up and down several times in a day,” Jitti said. “Shops have had to change their prices many times, so we decided to stop selling gold on Monday and Tuesday.” He added that

Price skyrockets The owner of a gold shop in Khon Kaen said that as prices skyrocketed ahead of Chinese New Year, the number of sellers in his shop increased. However, he declined to buy, fearing that the price could fall after the New Year and the shop would be hit by losses. Yesterday, the gold price in Asia dropped by one per cent to US$890.60 (Bt31,147) per ounce, from $898.10 per ounce. The price on Friday spiked above $900 as the economic crisis encouraged savers across the world to invest in the precious metal. Gold hit a record high of $1,000 last year.

he Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection (DJOP) has a few new ideas for handling the flood of young offenders it expects during the economic downturn. DJOP director general Tawatchai Thaikaew expects this economic crisis to mirror the tough times in 1996-1997, with higher unemployment destabilising families and causing the number of young offenders to rise.

Treating drug addiction “We will separate juveniles into different groups – minor offenders (who will get short-term training), youngsters aged between 10 and 14, those who’ve committed drugs offences and those showing aggressive behaviour,” Tawatchai said. “Drugs offenders will be sent to the correction centre in Ayutthaya province, which will be adapted to treat drug addiction.” In addition, the DJOP will ask the Education Ministry and the Department of Skill Development to oversee vocational training in the department’s correction centres, he said. Detainees with good school records and behaviour would be let out each day to study, and their names would be deleted from police records on release.

Pornpot Sopajaroen, a 21-year-old engineering student at Rajamangala University of Technology’s Uthen Thawai campus, was shot five times in front of a 7-Eleven store near the Kasetsart Intersection. Suchart said a sketch had been made from eyewitness accounts but the search for further witnesses and the motorcycle that the gunman used to flee was continuing. Coffee can protect from dementia Drinking moderate amounts of coffee may protect people from dementia later in life, according to a study by Finnish and Swedish researchers. Coffee drinkers ran a lower risk of dementia in middle age and Alzheimer’s disease later in life compared to those who drank little or no coffee. The researchers at the University of Kuopio, Finland, and the Karolinska Institutet of Stockholm, Sweden, studied 1,409 individuals aged 65 to 79 who were members of a group surveyed in 1972, 1977, 1982 or 1987 and who completed a re-examination in 1998. The average follow-up was made after 21 years. A total of 61 people were identified as demented, of whom 48 had Alzheimer’s disease. The people were divided into three categories. Moderate coffee drinkers, who drank three to five cups of coffee per day, had the lowest risk, the study said. – D PA

I’M INNOCENT, EX-MINISTER SAYS Bahamas lawmaker insists he did not try to extort money from movie star A P , Nassau, Bahamas

A

Bahamian lawmaker detained in an alleged extortion plot targeting actor John Travolta said he’d been charged with no crime and had only tried to warn the actor after his 16-year-old son died. Obie Wilchcombe said fellow Bahamas parliamentarian Pleasant Bridgewater told him “someone was doing something untowards” after Travolta’s son Jett died of a seizure at the family’s Grand Bahama home – a message he said he relayed to the actor’s lawyers. “She [Bridgewater] knew I

was close to the Travoltas. She wanted to bring something to my attention,” Wilchcombe told Us Weekly.

‘It’s ridiculous’ He called it “ridiculous and absurd” to suggest he’d sought money from the movie star, saying one “single individual” had tried to take advantage of the family. The details of the alleged extortion plot have still not been made public. A former Bahamian tourism minister and self-described Travolta friend, Wilchcombe

was with the actor shortly after his chronically ill son died on January 2. He and Bridgewater were detained along with paramedic Tarino Lightbourne. Bridgewater was charged with abetment and conspiracy to extort, and released on US$40,000 (Bt1.4-million) bail. She resigned from her Bahamas senate seat, vowing to fight those charges. Tabloids previously quoted Lightbourne recounting his efforts to revive Jett on the way to the hospital. Police said Travolta filed a complaint alleging attempted extortion. The actor and his wife Kelly Preston have taken their son’s ashes home to Florida.

ags-to-riches drama “Slumdog Millionaire” cemented its status as favourite for next month’s Oscars after winning the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Mumbai-set love story about a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire scooped the best ensemble cast prize at the awards show, regarded as a bellwether for likely winners at the Academy Awards show. Veteran Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor accepted the award alongside his co-stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. “It was overwhelming enough to be nominated. To win this is unbelievable,” said Kapoor. “Our gratitude to the great genius Danny Boyle,” he added, referring to the film’s director. Other movies nominated for the award included “Doubt”, “Milk”, “Frost/Nixon” and

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. It was the second industry award for “Slumdog Millionaire” in 24 hours following its triumph on Saturday at the Producers Guild of America Awards. Last week the film earned 10 Oscar nominations for the February 22 Academy Awards, trailing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” with 13. However, bookmakers and pundits increasingly say “Slumdog Millionaire” is the favourite for the Oscars’ bestpicture prize, with Academy voters reportedly bowled over by the film’s uplifting finale. In other awards, Sean Penn and Meryl Streep won the best actor and actress awards for their performances in “Milk” and “Doubt” respectively. Australian heart-throb Heath Ledger won a posthumous award in the best supporting actor category for Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight”.

ANNE HATHAWAY, ON HER OSCAR NOMINATION AS BEST ACTRESS

V

ikas Swarup is extremely modest for an author whose novel inspired the hit film “Slumdog Millionaire”, which earned four Golden Globes and 10 Oscar nominations – but then he is a diplomat. “I’m living proof that if I can write a book, anyone can,” says Swarup, 47, deputy high commissioner at the Indian embassy in South Africa. He says he has no intention

of giving up his day job to be a full-time author, despite the novel “Slumdog” is based on, “Q and A” being translated into 37 languages and a film option Swarup already having been taken out on his second novel, “Six Suspects”. In fact, Swarup still seems surprised at the success of his

debut work, in which a poverty-stricken orphan wins India’s version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” by answering the questions from memories of his tormented past. “I was writing to prove to myself that I could write a book. I only thought it might appeal to Indians – not that it would have this worldwide appeal,” Swarup says. He’s “extremely happy” with the movie, even though the plot underwent a thorough makeover in director Danny Boyle’s hands. The biggest change was that the filmmakers swapped the protagonist from Ram

Mohammad Thomas – whose name could be Hindu, Muslim or Christian – to Jamal Malik, a Muslim whose mother dies at the hands of Hindu vigilantes.

Not ‘poverty porn’ Swarup hotly rejects criticism that the book and film are “poverty pornography”, seeking to exploit the misery of India’s destitute. “The film is about life. The hero is the ultimate underdog who beats the odds. It’s a story of triumph.” Inspiration for the story came from a tale of a British major who was found guilty of

cheating his way to victory on the UK’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Swarup thought if a British officer could be accused of cheating, “it would be most likely that a slum boy would be accused of cheating if he won the show”. He completed the 382-page novel in four months, and the editors demanded no rewrites. Swarup set the tale in Mumbai’s vast Dharavi slum, though he’d been there. Yet his representation was so authentic that someone who knew the place intimately asked him how many years he’d lived there.

T

he Paris menswear displays ended on Sunday with a flourish of flowing jackets, schoolboy bow-ties and profusely pleated pants, as designers refused to bow to the gloomy recession aesthetic that has cast a pall over other fashion capitals. French label Lanvin put its money not on pinstripes or other business-friendly fabrics but sumptuous woollen knits that billowed or clung to the body in soft waves, creating a

sensuous, romantic look. Superb construction was at the heart of the collection, which featured the label’s hallmark visible seams and darts. Suits and jackets were cut wide, but fabrics – mostly knits in dusky tones of grey and black – were so supple that the silhouette remained quite narrow. Lanvin’s artistic director, Alber Elbaz, said he and menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver had aimed to create a collection that looked lived-in. Across town, Dior Homme was all hard lines and sharp angles. Although the house sent out mostly black suits – a menswear staple in hard times – its innovative tailoring pushed the look forward. Asymmetrical cuts, strap and metalwork closures and heaps of pleats created an edgy, bold silhouette that played on volumes and contrast. Designer Kris Van Assche dared go big, sending out billowy pants that bucked the overall trend in the Paris shows toward slim trousers.

Lucas Os sendrijv er

A plethora of pleats fanning out from the low-slung waistband gave the pants an almost bubble cut through the hips and thighs. British designer Paul Smith staged an energetic show that drew inspiration from the mischievous English schoolboy, with his tweed-heavy ward-robe and penchant for irreverent mixing and matching. The collection was whimsical and fun, even if Smith didn’t stray far from his label’s hallmark style. Smart wool jackets were worn over cycling jerseys in bright primary colours.

Flashes of hot-pink lining peeked out from a blazer in oatmeal-hued houndstooth. Throughout menswear week other Paris designers also put flight and fancy above pure pocketbook concerns. Highlights included John Galliano – who sent out models made up as Pan, the man-goat hybrid – and Givenchy, with its mediaeval S&M look.

She’s not wearing any Makeup, that is. Think you can get away with it?

SIX QUICK STEPS

S

>> Here’s how to achieve that

hu Uemura’s “No makeup makeup” for summer isn’t about naked faces – it’s more complicated than just skipping the mascara. The cosmetics firm’s Attamet Watchararattapan says that the natural look they’re aiming for has to start with beautiful skin. That means wearing the right moisturiser and having frequent facial massages to help replenish the skin cells. With great-looking skin, it’s easier to look good with the least amount of makeup. “Most women today already know a lot about makeup, so the main focus is more on

“no makeup makeup” look:

* Wear a primer to set the makeup.

* Use concealer on the dark

eye circles and freckles, but just enough to cover them. * Follow up with UV under base or light base. * Use pastel eye shadows instead of darker colours. * Follow up with powder that matches your skin tone. * Highlight your nose or cheeks with a highlighter, focusing on your best features.

highlighting and shading techniques,” says Attamet. “You look at your face in the light. Wherever the sun hits your face, that’s where you should highlight it.” Of course, that’s a little tricky in sunny Thailand. As a general rule, Attamet says women with plump cheeks should highlight the lower cheeks, and women with more defined cheekbones

should highlight that ridge of bone itself. You highlight all of your strongest points: that sharp nose or, if you have beautiful eyes, the area just above the eyelids. The colours you use should look natural – beige, light pink and soft browns on the eyelids, cheek and lips. Follow up with loose powder to complete the look.

THE COLOURS YOU USE SHOULD LOOK NATURAL – BEIGE, LIGHT PINK AND SOFT BROWNS ON THE EYELIDS,CHEEK AND LIPS.

a Mer takes advantage of the coming Thai summer to introduce its latest product, a moisturising cream with a strong sunscreen that’s already drawn orders from the celebrity set before its release here in March. For La Mer’s SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid Light Transformed, the Max Huber Research Labs have built on the power of light principle to engineer a formula that harnesses the power of light in a daily hydrating sunscreen.

The protecting fluid provides broad-spectrum UVA/ UVB protection as well as an array

of visible light-transformation benefits, using semi-precious tourmaline and Brazilian

malachite capture light energy and then transform it into beneficial green light to boost its powerful anti-oxidants. At the launch event, Patreeya Na Nakorn fell in love with the beautiful scent and luxurious texture. “It’s great being able to reapply it all day without feeling sticky,” she says. Pals who enjoy outdoor activities; Thipanan Srifuangfung, Theerawan Pangsriwong, Surachanee Limatibul, ML Sisira Diskul and Jitpas Bhirombhakdi, were also planning to add the cream to

their must-haves, which include wide-brimmed hats and parsols. “This one is better that the usual UV creams because we can put it on as often as we want,” says Sisira. Prem Busarakhamwongs, the only guy at the event, says most men are lazy about using UV protection but this new product may make them change their minds. The SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid will be available in March for Bt3,500 (40ml) at La Mer Aquarium Counters in leading department stores.

Torre slams A-Rod, Cashman in book Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre is scathingly critical of superstar third baseman Alex Rodriguez and general manager Brian Cashman in his

new book called “The Yankee Years.” Torre claims in the book that Rodriguez’s teammates dubbed him “A-Fraud” after the three-time Most Valuable Player developed an obsession with Yankees captain Derek Jeter. Torre also claims that Rodriguez asked for a personal clubhouse attendant to run errands for him. Torre, who became manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers after an acrimonious split with the Yankees, was also Torre critical of Cashman, saying the general manager never told the team’s ownership that Torre wanted a two-year contract. – AFP

pain’s Rafael Nadal firmed as Australian Open favourite yesterday with another impeccable display as Andy Murray’s Grand Slam bid folded before the quarter-finals. As Nadal whipped Fernando Gonzalez to reach the last eight, 2008 finalist Jo Wilfried Tsonga was also in fine touch as he dismissed US star James Blake in straight sets. Nadal, who is yet to drop a set, said he was playing the best Australian Open of his life. “Probably I am playing a little bit better than last year,” he said. “I’m not saying I’m going to be in the final or semi-finals. I think the feeling is a little bit better. But in the end the impor-

tant thing is the result.” Nadal’s best performance here was 2008, when he reached the semi-finals before being beaten by Tsonga, but his claims on a first hard-court Grand Slam are growing. He has been the form player of the top seeds with triple champion Roger Federer taken to five sets on Sunday and Novak Djokovic twice pushed by Amer Delic and Marcos Baghdatis. “I am playing well, but you never know if it’s going to be enough. So I hope to continue to play like this, and later we will see, because all the matches are very, very difficult,” Nadal said. Meanwhile, Murray’s campaign ended in tears as he was

bullied off court 2-6 6-1 1-6 6-3 64 by Fernando Verdasco, the stocky Spaniard with the laser serve. Murray, who clashed with Federer and Djokovic over his status as pre-tournament favourite, refused to make excuses despite falling ill with a cold. “If I say that I’m sick and it affected me, I know it’s going to be like, ‘Well, he’s making excuses for losing,’” he said. “I don’t feel that was the reason why I lost. I definitely did have my chances, and he played too well.” The defeat puts on hold Murray’s attempt to win Britain’s first Grand Slam since 1936, and also ruins his chances of becoming world No 1 in the next six months. Tsonga then dominated the tie-break, pummelling some big forehands before sealing it with an ace 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7/3). “I think I’m playing better than last year,” he said. “I’m stronger maybe in my head, and it helps a lot.” Earlier Nadal, capitalising on Gonzalez’s four-hour marathon with Richard Gasquet on Saturday, raced through the first two sets in less than 40 minutes each. The Chilean 13th seed mounted a brief revival in the third but Nadal hit back from 3-0 down and got the decisive break 4-3 to end it 6-3 6-2 6-4.

struggling Serena Williams received a free ride into the Australian Open quarter-finals when her opponent fell ill yesterday, while fourth seed Elena Dementieva surged to her 14th straight win this year. Three-time Australian champion Williams was trailing 6-3 2-4 to rising teen star Victoria Azarenka and had received a code violation for swearing in frustration when a mystery bug forced the 16th seeded Belarusian to retire. Williams next opponent, eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, also had an armchair ride into the quarters when Chinese 22nd seed Zheng Jie pulled out of their clash with a wrist injury. But there were convincing wins for Dementieva and unseeded Spanish giantkiller Carla Suarez Navarro in the two matches that did go the distance. Azarenka’s dramatic withdrawal prematurely curtailed what was developing into a fascinating clash between a nine-time Grand Slam winner Williams and one of the leading lights in a new generation of challengers. The 19-year-old had broken Williams twice to win the first set and was down a break in the second when she became distressed. She called a medical time

out but could barely stand up after coming back out to play, wobbling between points then staggering to the net in tears to concede the match before being helped off court. Williams, who complained of feeling rusty earlier in the tournament, said she was unhappy with her serve when she was reprimanded for an audible obscenity towards the end of the first set. “I felt like this tournament my serve hasn’t been anywhere near where it normally is so I just got a little frustrated with my first serve per centage,” she said, adding that she was confident she would have come back to win. Williams remains on track for a semi-final showdown wiith Dementieva, who crushed Slovak 18th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-2 to extend the hottest winning streak in women’s tennis. The 27-year-old’s 14-match run this year has already delivered titles in Auckland and Sydney, leading compatriot Dinara Safina to nominate her the favourite to lift the trophy here. But Dementieva played down the tag, preferring to concentrate on her next match against Suarez Navarro. “I’m the favourite? I don’t think so,” the Monte Carlobased world No 4 said.

‘Big Four’ kept apart in FA draw

NO CUTTING EDGE Benitez tells L’pool to sharpen up after 2nd Everton draw AFP, Liverpool, England

,,

AP

R

afael Benitez admits Liverpool need to find a sharper cutting edge after his side’s latest frustrating draw sparked a war of words with Everton boss David Moyes. For the second time in a week Benitez was left fuming as Everton came to Anfield with a defensive mindset and managed to grind out a 1-1 draw, this time in the FA Cup fourth round. After snatching a Premier League draw against their Merseyside rivals on Monday, Everton held out again because Liverpool were unable to turn their possession into goals. Benitez’s frustration at Everton’s cautious tactics, and his disappointment at the prospect of an unwanted replay at Goodison Park on February 4, boiled over after Sunday’s match. “When you have a busy time it is better not to play too many matches but you have to do it,” he said. “I think we have important games coming now. It will be difficult but if everyone is available we will manage the squad. “It could be better to get the tie finished in one game without a replay. At least we are still in the competition. “One team was trying to win this match and one didn’t want to lose. To attack against 10 players behind the ball is not easy so I’m really pleased with the players. I have never played like this here or at Valencia. It has to be different in the replay. Clearly they have to attack.”

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, front, and captain Steven Gerrard celebrate the team’s goal. Benitez’s jibes drew an angry response from Moyes, who hinted that his counterpart lacked dignity. “I never come looking for a draw, that’s for sure, although I might have taken a draw in the end,” he said. “We’ve come to a side with a lot of big players who have spent big to win trophies. That makes it difficult for a side like Everton. “This is a great football club but we look after our business. We do things with a bit of dignity and style.” Liverpool’s failure to kill off Everton despite completely dominating the second half means they face a busy period of three games in seven days.

I HAVE NEVER COME LOOKING FOR A DRAW,THAT’S FOR SURE. David Moyes Tomorrow’s Premier League trip to Wigan is followed by a crucial home game against

Chelsea on Sunday and now another derby at Everton three days later. Benitez’s decision to leave Robbie Keane out of his squad left Liverpool with few attacking options to break down Everton, but he insisted it was up his forwards to improve. “We know we have had some draws against teams who have defended like Everton, so we have to change the situation and improve our attack,” he said. “Robbie was not selected because we have a very good squad but he is working hard. “Normally all the players want to be in the squad and start so I doubt he will be happy.”

English football’s ‘big four’ of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were kept apart when the draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup was made on Sunday. Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton face a potential last 16 clash with Aston Villa after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield. But Villa, trying to break into the elite quartet, also have a fourth round replay after being held to a goalless stalemate on Saturday by Championship side Doncaster. The winners of the replay between Midlands foes Derby and Nottingham Forest can look forward to a glamour tie at home to English, European and world champions Manchester United. Swansea’s record for knocking out FA Cup holders Portsmouth was a home tie against another Premier League side in Fulham. Cardiff or Arsenal, who played out a goalless draw on Sunday, face the winners of the replay between Premier League strugglers West Brom and Burnley, who knocked several top-flight sides out of the League Cup before losing in midweek in the semi-finals to Tottenham. A guaranteed allPremier League clash is the match between West Ham and Middlesbrough. AFP

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, right, argues with referee Martin Atkinson.

rsene Wenger admits he is concerned at the prospect of a fixture back-log after Arsenal were held to a goalless draw in the fourth round of the FA Cup by Cardiff. The north Londoners have seen their resources dangerously stretched by a spate of injuries to key attacking players such as Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky, Theo Walcott

and Eduardo da Silva, and the prospect of shoe-horning another game into an alreadycrowded schedule drew a downbeat response from Wenger after Sunday’s stalemate here at Ninian Park. “We could do without it, of course,” the Arsenal manager said. “But let’s not complain because we play football. “It’s one more game to play. If that’s the price we have to

pay to stay in the hat, we’re happy to do it,” added Wenger, whose team – if they see off Cardiff – will face either Premier League strugglers West Brom or another secondtier side in Burnley in the last 16. “We are very short at the moment and cannot rotate very much,” the Frenchman added. “I could rest a few players against Cardiff but not as

many as I’d wanted. I’d planned to take Robin van Persie off, but it didn’t work that way.” Arsenal may now face a rush of four games in the space of 10 days – three Premier League matches and the replay with City – but, for Wenger, even that is a more palatable prospect than being dumped out of the FA Cup for the first time by lower league opponents.

Perez beamed and doffed his cap after the ball rolled onto the green and the fans in the grandstands erupted in cheers. He stopped grinning only briefly, while he was bending over his final putt.

Merrick’s second-place finish was the highest for the 26year-old former UCLA star, who is beginning his third full season on the tour. Perez, who led the first three days of the 90-hole event before falling three shots off Stricker’s pace, had said the ideal conditions made the early

rounds “like playing in a dome”. That changed for the closing round over the Palmer Course at PGA West. Club selection, figuring distance and direction, all became a challenge. The wind would quiet one moment, then gust and swirl the next. Flagsticks on the greens rocked back and forth with the flags flapping, go still, then just as suddenly begin shuddering again. Stricker, at No 16 the highest ranked player in the field, had his hopes of winning a fifth tour title blown away in the wind.

Damien McGrane (67) was fourth, three strokes behind second place. After a shaky start, Alvaro had five birdies on the back nine, including two on the 16th and 17th holes. “It wasn’t a perfect day,” Quiros said. “I took time to get going. Real moved three points clear of third-placed Sevilla, who lost 2-0 against Racing Santander, as they enacted revenge for their opening 2-1 defeat to Depor at the Riazor Stadium. Portuguese defender Pepe admitted it was frustrating that Barca kept winning but pointed out that Real’s other rivals were now further away. “Barca didn’t slip up but the teams behind us [Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid] did so we have some breathing space,” explained Pepe. “We

just have to wait for Barca to drop points, then take advantage by winning.” It was a fifth straight win for Ramos who has had to deal with the speculation that Arsene Wenger could replace him at the end of the season. Ramos has a six-month deal but presidential candidate Florentino Perez has stirred trouble by claiming he would bring Arsenal manager Wenger to the Santiago Bernabeu if elected. “We just have to concentrate on fulfilling our part by winning and wait and see what happens,” said Ramos. “It is a long season and a lot can happen.”

Barcelona have also been irked by suggestions that Real could break the bank to sign their Argentine star Lionel Messi who scored twice in the 4-1 win over Numancia on Saturday. “I’ll never leave Barca,” said Messi. “I’ll only leave if they throw me out. Barcelona is my home.” With Barca and Real in their custom positions of first and second the rest of the top sides appear to be fighting for the remaining two Champions League slots. Despite playing against ten men for close to an hour Sevilla fell to a surprise 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Racing Santander.

avid Beckham left the door open to a possible long-term stay at AC Milan after scoring his first goal in Italian football in a 4-1 win at Bologna. The victory kept Milan in the title hunt, trailing leaders and city rivals Inter Milan by six points. Playing only his third match for Milan, Beckham wrapped things up on the hour mark with Milan’s fourth, a rocket that beat Francesco Antonioli at his near post. “I feel very good here. I arrived in a team that wanted me for years and I play for exceptional fans,” said the former England captain. “I’ll stay here until March and then we’ll see. Right now

AC Milan’s David Beckham celebrates his first goal on loan. I’m focussed only on my football.” Beckham joined on loan from LA Galaxy and his deal is due to run out on March 8, after which he is expected back in Los Angeles for the start of

the new Major League Soccer season. On Sunday, he struck from about 15 yards out to the right of goal to net his first successful strike for Milan. “It was a

truly special goal, just as it is special for me to be playing here,” he told RAI TV. “The important thing was to win so now we are even more confident ahead of Wednesday’s game [against Genoa].” Milan have been a more balanced and effective outfit since Beckham joined, something they had lost since Gennaro Gattuso was injured. Coach Carlo Ancelotti is keen to keep him at the club but admits that it is out of his hands. “It’s up to him what happens. Our hands are tied because he is locked into a very precise contract,” said Ancelotti. “But as long as we have him at our disposal I see no reason not to take advantage of that because he’s giving us a lot.”

now – we’re second in the league, just two points off the summit. “We stand a good chance of promotion to the top division or at least a play-off place. Our next game is on Saturday, so after national duty, I have to fly back to Belgium, which means I’ll definitely miss the traditional match between Chulalongkorn and Thammasart Universities.” Leesaw revealed that he was hopeful but not certain of being handed a starting spot by coach Peter Reid. Iran top the table following their 6-0 mauling of Singapore. “I’ve talked with Reid on the phone from Belgium. He said he needed me for the Iran match. It’s up to him whether he wants me to start the game. “I’ll accept his decision. He changed the system to play with a lone striker while I was absent. So I’m hoping he’ll revert to two strikers now that I’m here.”
