GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

What Thailand could learn from America By Krissada Sukosol Clapp Singer and actor

B

ecause I was born and bred in Thailand, I have always been prouder of my Thai side. But watching Obama’s inauguration speech reconnected me with my American self. People give America a hard time, but deep down I think they admire its values. Recently I’ve been impressed with the selflessness of leaders of opposing parties – they know when to work with each other for the greater good. I don’t see such sacrifice in the influential figures of my home country. It’s a shame. I realise we live in a different culture but … I love Thailand and I just want to feel good again about being Thai.

Now, joining the stressbusting treatments on offer is Transcranial Electrostimulation (TES) therapy, which uses electricity at a specific frequency to stimulate the release of beta-endorphin in the brain. The aim is to flood the body with a feeling of relaxation.

The simple invention uses iron pendulums of different weight to separate the produce. “It can separate fruit and vegetables into six groups and speed up the process dramatically. The tool costs Bt800 and doesn’t need electricity so is easy to use in orchards,” says Prangchanok Toobworapun, 17, a student who helped create the tool.

pending more hours watching television or playing video games as a teenager may lead to depression in young adults, according to a study. Researchers looked at the exposure to electronic media of 4,142 adolescents who were not depressed when the study began in 1995, before DVDs and the Internet were widely used. The teens reported an average of 5.68 hours of media exposure per day, including 2.3 hours of television, 2.34 hours

of radio, 0.62 hours of videocassettes and 0.41 hours of computer games. Seven years later, when the participants were an average of 21.8 years old, 308 of them (7.4 per cent) had developed symptoms consistent with depression.

Young men more at risk “In the fully adjusted models, participants had significantly greater odds of developing depression by follow-up for each hour of daily television viewed,” wrote the au-

thors of the study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry journal. “In addition, those reporting higher total media exposure had significantly greater odds of developing depression for each additional hour of daily use,” said the study, led by Brian Primack of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Young women were found to be less likely to develop symptoms of depression than young men when exposed to the same amount of electronic media. Depression, the leading cause of non-fatal disability worldwide, commonly begins in adolescence or young adulthood, the article explained.

Google Earth allows a peek into oceans, Mars A P , San Francisco

G

oogle Inc has launched a new version of Google Earth that allows users to explore the oceans, view images of the planet Mars and watch regions of the Earth change over time. The new features mark a significant upgrade to Google Earth, a popular software program that provides access to the world’s geographical information through digital maps, satellite imagery and the company’s search tools.

‘Extremely powerful tool’ Google Earth 5.0 was unveiled at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, where former vice president Al Gore, singer Jimmy Buffet and others spoke about its capacity to educate the public

about global warming. “This is an extremely powerful educational tool,” said Gore, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work raising awareness about global warming. “One of my fondest hopes is that people around the world will use Google Earth to see for themselves the reality of what’s happening because of the climate crisis.” Google Earth has been downloaded more than 500 million times since it was launched in 2005. The software is available for free on Google’s website. John Hanke, director of Google Earth and Maps, said the idea of adding oceans came three years ago when a scientist pointed out that the software was missing the water that covers almost threequarters of the Earth's surface.

The warning came at the nominees’ traditional pre-award luncheon, where Sidney Ganis – president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the movie awards – told the group of 112 nominees that this year’s show would be quite different and would carry “many, many risks”. A man armed only with a pocket knife stabbed a dog to death as it was attacking a 77-year-old woman in her front yard. Ann Lyon, who was with her own dog when an American bulldog attacked, was wearing a leather coat that protected her from serious injury, authorities in Council Bluffs, Des Moines said. Lyon said that the bulldog knocked her to the ground and then went after her dog Casey, a

Kevin Daub told Omaha, Nebraska, television station WOWT that he stopped his truck and jumped out when he noticed the bulldog attack Lyon. “I just heard her screaming ‘Help! help me! help me!’ so I ran over and tried pulling it off her,” he said. A&R MEN

The talent-spotting gurus Old-school record label execs turn to teaching in hopes that their successors will better serve artists and adapt more quickly to changes By Randy Lewis LOS ANGELES TIMES

LOS ANGELES TIMES

O

The artists-and-repertoire men: Jeff Blue, left, Don Grierson, front, and Kenny Kerner.

nce upon a time A&R were the sexiest letters in the music industry’s alphabet. Executives in the artists-and-repertoire division of every major record label were charged with discovering and nurturing new acts, setting them on the path to stardom. These high-powered talent brokers would spend their nights scouring nightclubs and street corners after days combing through stacks of homemade recordings in their quests for pop music’s next big thing. In the era of retrenchment, though, many labels have reduced or even eliminated A&R staff. Most companies are looking only to sign acts that come to them spit-shined and ready to market, or perhaps plucked from a TV talent contest, no nurturing required. But Don Grierson isn’t going to let the trade die without a fight. Grierson, who helped shepherd acts including the Beatles, Little River Band, Heart and Tina Turner, maintains that the skill set he teaches in A&R classes at Hollywood’s Musicians Institute continues to be vital,

even as the industry faces an uncertain future. What is critical, he says, is training students to anticipate trends and harness new technologies to better serve artists and connect them with an audience. The harsh reality is that few record companies have either the time, money or interest to nurture an act for four years, as Jeff Blue of the institute’s staff did with Linkin Park before the band became a platinumselling smash.

Virtual success Instead of partnering singers, instrumentalists or composers with producers, Grierson, Blue and their colleagues Barry Squier and Kenny Kerner – who discovered Kiss – might pair them with a music supervisor working on a popular television series or a video-game franchise, media that have become great ways to break artists. Students are assigned to set up virtual record companies. They have to find a band they’d like to sign, make a recording and then promote, market and publicise it. Matthew Williams, a heavy-metal singer who moved with his guitarist brother Jason to Los Angeles a couple of years ago, enrolled at MI and soon landed a song in a movie that will be released this spring.

Well, the stuff about him will no doubt be the most reliable gossip in the book.

Take wild and crazy guy Steve Martin, who is convinced that any movie can be a Martin box-office success if it has a wedding in it. When he was signing up for “Pink Panther 2” he insisted that his Inspector Clouseau character get married in the film. “Every movie I’ve done that ends in a wedding or holding a baby has been a hit!”

Simply satisfactory With a mere 4,000 people watching, the only fire at the Simply Red show was in Mick Hucknall’s tummy By Lisnaree Vichitsorasatra D A I LY X P R E S S

Brotherhood

The Chemical Brothers (Virgin) Following their fifth consecutive UK No 1 album last year, The Chemical Brothers return with “Brotherhood”, a Best Of collection that’s serving as a back catalogue to American market. The collection of 13 hits includes new tunes “Keep My Composure” featuring Spank Rock and “Midnight Madness”. The album opens with “Hey Boy, Hey Girl”, “Block Rockin' Beats” and “Do It Again”, three strong electronica tracks from “Galvanize”, then moves into solid dancefloor with “Leave Home” and “Saturate”. The mood is strictly house on “Star Guitar”, making this a very collectible compilation.

ff to a dissolute start on their farewell tour, Simply Red managed to sell only 4,000 seats at Impact Arena on Sunday night, mostly foreign long-time fans a bit shy about admitting their age but willing to say the show left them simply content. There were no tears as Mick Hucknall and the lads said goodbye to Bangkok, the first of many adieus they’ll bid as the tour rolls on to Australia and New Zealand, Mexico and South America, then North America and

SOME OF THE THAIS TOLD US THEY WEREN’T ACTUALLY SIMPLY RED FANS BUT CAME TO HEAR THE HITS FROM THE ’80S

homeward to Europe and Britain. Twenty-five years is enough, said one fan of Hucknall’s songwriting, noting that the singer now has a family to take care of. “The music will still be with us,” said 53year-old Mark, a follower since the disco years who’d brought his whole family to the show. And for Vivienne, 52, “The song lyrics are excellent – good and relevant.” Some of the Thais at the concert told us they weren’t actually Simply Red fans but came to hear the hits from the ’80s – and they didn’t exactly get what they expected. But the true devotees seemed well contented with the 21 songs on offer and, after a restful lounge in their seats, “Holding Back the

Years” finally got the crowd on its feet. Hucknall got a little raunchy after that with “The Right Thing”, shifting the audience into proper dance gear.

And then he disappeared, for quite a long time, actually. When he came back he confessed he was suffering from a bit of Bangkok belly, though he used the term Delhi belly. Oh, dear, the tour was off to the trots. So the show wasn’t a blast, but there were plenty of touching moments. Hucknall dedicated “For Your Babies” – which he wrote before he had any children of his own – to the youngsters of the world, and another one too, as a nod to Unicef, “Say You Love Me”. The encore included “Something Got Me Started” and, with the gutted economy in mind, “Money’s Too Tight (To Mention)”. The perfect ending was “If You Don’t Know Me by Now”, the greatest of their greatest hits.

Pocketful of Sunshine The English singer and songwriter’s sophomore effort is top notch with lots of radio friendly hook driven pop enhanced by her beautiful and bright vocals. It kicks off with the catchy “Put Your Arms Around Me”, which will have you singing along in no time at all. She collaborates with Sean Kingston on “Love Like This” and gets all soulful on the striking ballad “Soulmate”. “Not Givin’ Up” is the standout track with passionate vocals and a flawless beat.

Life in the fast lane Auto-maker Porsche defies crisis by opening a museum to showcase its cars By Andreas Cremer BLOOMBERG

P

Porsche-Museum in Stuttgart

orsche SE is defying the worst car market in decades. As competitors such as General Motors and PSA Peugeot seek state aid, the German carmaker is treating itself to a new $100-million (Bt450-million) museum. “This is our new visiting card,” said Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, last week at the museum’s opening in Stuttgart, near the company’s southern German headquarters. “We will welcome our international customers here, as well as many people from around the world who don’t drive a Porsche themselves, but are fascinated by our sports cars.”

The futuristic structure designed by the Vienna architect Delugan Meissl has 5,600 square metres for 80 vehicles such as the 356 Spyder, the car that the actor

James Dean was driving when he died in a 1955 crash, and the latest generation of the 911 Carrera sports car. “The swaggering architecture conveys anything but a pledge to modesty,” said Manfred Wehmeyer, an arts lecturer at the University of Stuttgart. “It’s a bit of a showoff.” Projected by Porsche’s management to attract 200,000 visitors a year, the new museum epitomises “the modern company’s forward-looking self-confidence”, according to Hunger. Porsche posted record profit of ¤6.4 billion last year and, less than four weeks ago, took control of Volkswagen AG, Europe’s largest carmaker. Volkswagen produces more cars in a week than Porsche does in a year. Porsche decided to build a new museum in 2004. The design by Delugan Meissl was picked out of 170 submissions from all over Europe and construction began in 2005. The museum’s upper exhibition floor is made of a steel structure that rests solely on three

concrete pillars, creating the impression of a “hovering monolith”, according to architect Romand Delugan. Other cars on display include the 1939 Type 64, built for the B erlin-Rome long-distance car race. The original 911, the 1968 2.0 Coupe, also features. First code-named 901, it had to be renamed after Peugeot claimed the right to all three-digit numbers with a zero in the middle.

Milan ready for talks to keep Beckham AC Milan chief Adriano Galliani said yesterday the club would do everything in its power to keep English midfielder David Beckham, who has been loaned to the Italian club by American outfit Los Angeles Galaxy. Asked if Beckham wanted to remain with the club, Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I think so, yes. But I can speak only on behalf of the club, and we will do everything we David Beckham can to keep Beckham after March.”– AFP

Italy coach Marcello Lippi said yesterday there was no chance that Paolo Maldini would be included in the squad to play Brazil in London on February 10. Lippi has been under pressure to give Maldini a farewell call up in the match at Emirates Maldini Stadium. “We’ll take into consideration this hypothesis,” Lippi was quoted as saying in a story by the ANSA news agency. “We will think of something, but at the moment it is impossible. “I respect Maldini greatly and he is a great player and a great professional,” Lippi said. “He is one of the greatest players that I have ever.” – AP

Chelsea’s Bosingwa escapes FA action

China not ready to host World Cup China have decided not to bid for the right to host the 2018 and 2022 football World Cups because the game in the nation faces serious problems and playing standards are too low, state media said. The deadline for launching official bids expired early yesterday Beijing time, with China holding back for several reasons, the Beijing Youth Daily reported, citing an unnamed

Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa escaped any disciplinary action Monday for deliberately kicking Yossi Benayoun in the back during the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Bosingwa’s reckless act late in the match looked a far more blatant foul than the challenge which saw Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard sentoff on the hour mark. “I apologise for what I did and it was never my intention to hurt him [Benayoun],” said Bosingwa. “I know it was wrong and I apologise.” – AFP

Singapore F1 circuit to be modified Singapore’s Formula One Grand Prix street circuit will be slightly modified to increase the potential for overtaking, race promoters said. Last September, drivers said the bumpy, five-kilometre waterfront circuit offered virtually no chance of overtaking, although organisers thought it was possible in at least two places.Minor modifications are now proposed at three turns “in order to improve overtaking opportunities,” said Michael McDonough, the race’s technical and operations director. – AFP

R

obbie Keane swapped the title race for a relegation struggle last night by completing a staggeringly swift return to Tottenham Hotspur after less than six months at Liverpool, with the Irishman admitting what should have been a dream summer transfer to the club he had supported as a boy had “proved not to be the right move”. Liverpool finally sanctioned the sale late yesterday afternoon as the 5pm cut-off ticked ever closer after a day of frantic negotiations with the Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy. Keane, who departed White Hart Lane for an initial £19 million with a further £1.3 million of potential

add-ons, is understood to have cost Tottenham an initial £12m. That fee will rise quickly to nearer £16m with further ambitious add-ons, linked to silverware he claims at Spurs, to see up to £19m change hands again. The 28-year-old is expected to make his second debut for Tottenham in Sunday’s potentially explosive north London derby with Arsenal. The Spurs manager Harry Redknapp admitted he was “thrilled and delighted” to have secured Keane’s purchase, with the player joining Jermain Defoe and Pascal Chimbonda in returning to the club during this transfer window as the Spurs manager effectively reassembles the squad that excelled

briefly under Martin Jol. “He is a terrific player and can make all the difference,” said Redknapp, conscious that Saturday’s 3–2 defeat at Bolton left Tottenham in 14th place but only a point clear of the relegation zone. He has recruited a player desperate for games after enduring a hugely frustrating spell at Anfield, the victim as much of a political struggle raging behind the scenes as a player labouring with poor form. The forward arrived on Merseyside amid great fanfare but struggled to justify his transfer fee, scoring seven goals in 28 appearances. He was substituted 18 times in that time and struggled to adapt to Rafael Benitez’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, whether playing behind Fernando Torres or leading the line in the Spaniard’s absence. “It was a difficult decision to

“We couldn’t have got anyone better. People make decisions in their life and his move to Liverpool didn’t work out. It was difficult for Robbie. Liverpool are such a strong side going well in the league it was hard for him to break in regularly.”

We’ve got to get on and fight our way up that league table.” His exit marks a significant political victory for Benitez, the Liverpool manager who is seeking greater autonomy over transfers at Anfield. The striker found himself a pawn in the power-struggle between Benitez and the club’s hierarchy. Benitez was the main force behind Keane’s departure and his success indicates he now has the backing of at least one club owner. Intriguingly, Keane may now return to Anfield on the season’s final day for a league game upon which Spurs’ league survival and Liverpool’s pursuit of a first league title in 19 years could potentially hinge.

afael Benitez never stops being a tactician. The win over Chelsea had no sooner been completed than the Liverpool manager was honing his strategy on another front. Someone asked if there had been a Tottenham bid for Robbie Keane. “Officially I don’t know,” he replied. You had to admire his craft. Only a virtuoso could plant far-reaching doubts with so few words. Without lurching into a crass outburst he had made his audience think yet again about Anfield’s tensions and spheres of influence. The prospects of Benitez signing a new contract are hard to make out when so much is clouded at Liverpool. We have still to learn if George Gillett and Tom Hicks can complete a sale of the club. More pertinently for most fans, it is not known if Benitez will secure the absolute control he seeks over transfers. The issues will have to be resolved eventually, but they ought surely to be shelved now that no further footballers can be bought or sold until the summer. Benitez has already been a distraction for Liverpool as well as a leader, but he is not guilty of the charge that is usually laid against him: the allegation that the attack on Manchester United last

month had instead sabotaged his own team’s form was the wrong complaint to make. Benitez was surely trying to encourage the referee Howard Webb to be sceptical about the Old Trafford team and its manipulative manager on the weekend when Chelsea came to face United. He was not to know Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team would be so weak that a relaxing win for the Premier League champions was inevitable. It is hard, all the same, to see why this trivial affair should unsettle the Liverpool squad or break Benitez’s concentration. The real harm was done when he left his own position open to speculation. Professional footballers may not care very much who the manager happens to be, but they are averse to instability because a newcomer might decide to get rid of them. For a while Liverpool did lose their focus. He and his squad must regain focus. The reported annoyance that Gareth Barry was not bought in the summer ought to have been forgotten by now, particularly since Liverpool are wellequipped with deep-lying midfielders. Every ounce of his concentration is needed to make the most of his players, since they alone have a faintly plausible hope of beating United to the title.

he long-suffering fans of Atletico Madrid are not in agreement with the sacking of coach Javier Aguirre and the appointment of Abel Resino. Aguirre, 50, was sacked on Monday night, as a consequence of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Valladolid, which left Atletico seventh in La Liga and without a win since December. Former Atletico goalkeeper Abel Resino, until Monday coach of third division Castellon, was due to be presented to the media later yesterday. This change of coach, however, has not met with the agreement of most Atletico fans, according to online polls taken yesterday by sports dailies AS and Marca. Only 18 per cent of AS readers believed that the sacking of Aguirre is “the solution”, with 82 per cent opining that the departure of the Mexican will not improve the team’s situation. In another poll, only 27 per cent of readers believe that Abel is the “ideal” coach to replace Aguirre. Abel played for Atletico 1986-1995, but his coaching curriculum is slim. His only first division team was Levante, who were relegated.

enit St Petersburg confirmed yesterday that their international midfielder Andrei Arshavin has been signed by English Premier League giants Arsenal. However the Russian side said the value of the deal was higher than the £12 million announced by Arsenal on Monday. Alexei Petrov, a spokesman for Zenit, said Zenit received much more money than £12 million, which Arsenal announced on Monday, refusing however to disclose the final value of the deal. “The conditions of the contract are very favourable for Zenit,” Petrov said. “The value of the deal is more than £12 million.” On Monday, several hours after the 1730GMT transfer deadline passed, there was still no formal confirmation. However, it appeared the hold-up was primarily down to the difficulty the Premier League had in processing late deadline day deals.
