Party raided The “swingers caught in the raid were a mix of Americans, French, Indians and Chinese. The tourist police arrived at the hotel suite to find the party just warming up and discovered condoms, 30 Viagra tablets and porn films. The police caught Richards in January at a party for about 50 people in a Huay Kwang hotel area but he claimed it was a birthday party and no charges were pressed. Officer Archayon Kraithong said the police investigation suggests the swingers parties have been going on for three to four years. Police issued a warrant for Richards’ arrest on February 1. The participants were released after paying fines, while Richards was still being questioned by police yesterday. If found guilty, he faces 10 years in jail or a fine of up to Bt20,000. DAILY

T

hai youths are more likely to express their love with gifts and roses on Valentine’s Day than have sex, according to the findings of a Suan Dusit Poll released yesterday. The findings were aired at the “White Valentine Design Your Love” press conference, which was attended by Public Health Minister Wittaya Kaewparadai and HIV/Aids control and prevention agencies. The survey, conducted by Rajabhat Suan Dusit Institute between January 17 and 31, asked 1,008 Thais aged 15 to 24 about

sex and how they would be marking Valentine’s Day.

Roses and romance About 26 per cent said they would give a gift to their partner, 13 per cent would give roses and 10 per cent wanted a romantic dinner for two. Only 5 per cent admitted that sex was part of their plans. The survey also covered the use of pornography; 34 per cent of respondents said they had visited porn websites while 31 per cent said they had used pornography during sex or masturbation. When asked how they pro-

tected themselves from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), only 53 per cent said they used condoms. Thirty-one per cent admitted to having caught an STD, and 62 per cent of them had sought out medical treatment at a hospital or clinic. But 6 per cent admitted to buying drugs over the counter for self-treatment. Wittaya said that unsafe sex risked infection by HIV/Aids but also unwanted pregnancies. To date there have been 345,196 cases of HIV/Aids in Thailand since the first infection was reported here in 1984, with 93,034 deaths. About 12,000 new cases are expected this year, most of them the result of unsafe sex.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) yesterday warned people to beware of new pyramid-fund schemes. Leaflet-handout services and website banners are the latest scams claiming to offer investors big returns. “The rate of return they advertise is higher than anything being offered by the banks,” said DSI official Colonel Piyawat Kingket. “Please be very cautious if you hear about an offer of very high returns in a short period of time, especially if you are asked to introduce new members too,” he said. Piyawat also gave a stern warning to anyone thinking of starting a pyramid fund. “You will be charged with public fraud and punished.”

Tram for Chinatown The project to develop Bangkok’s Yaowarat area is more than halfway complete and the “red route” tram service should be running by the end of this month, a senior official said yesterday. Samphanthawong district office director Prasert Inthusoma said that of the project’s nine tasks, the renovation of the Chinese arch to mark His Majesty the King’s birthday should be finished by March 16, cars had been banned on the arch roundabout from yesterday; and the tram service to transport tourists from Hualumpong subway station to Yaowarat was scheduled to start running in the next few weeks. Rural kids are discovering new horizons thanks to a windfall of words

here’s a simple reason you rarely see rural kids reading: they can’t afford the books they are interested in. Even when they go to libraries, there’s nothing to tempt them on the shelves. According to an Abac Poll, 16.4 per cent of children say they don’t have access to books while 25.2 per cent say the books they like are too expensive. Concerned about these findings, the Amway for Thai

Society Foundation has introduced the “One by One: World of Wisdom” campaign. It was responsible for a book bonanza at 10 rural schools in the North last year. “We organised events to gather over 20,000 children’s books for the schools,” says Sorot Vorasutika, a foundation committee member.

Special delivery A caravan loaded with 1,000 books reached a remote library in Mae Hong Son last week.

“There’s a big variety of reading matter, which is great for the children,” Ban Huay Gung School director Wanrabiab Boonkerd says. Taking children from kindergarten to Grade 9, her school has about 150 students, most of them Karen. Saengduen Samranpaisan, a Grade-9 student, was delighted with the pile of donated books. “They are very up-to-date. Some cover issues like global warming,” she says enthusiastically.

Wanrabiab plans to allow members of the general public to use her school’s library too. “That way, more people will receive the benefits,” she says. “Many of our school-leavers can’t afford to continue their education. Allowing them to read books here means they will still be able to expand their knowledge.” Sorot expects the campaign to reach more than 3,000 children living in remote areas. “Next year, we’ll send books to five more schools,” he says.

ore than 75,000 motorists were caught running red lights in the month after traffic cameras went up at city intersections, but less than 5,000 have paid the fine at the 11 designated locations, a policeman said yesterday. Deputy city police chief Pol Maj-General Panu Kerdlarppol said he would meet with 7Eleven executives today to see if the fines could be paid via the stores’ counter service. Since December 30, tickets have been sent to 75,470 redlight runners, slapping them with a Bt500 fine and a 40point reduction on their licence, he said. However, only 4,283 have paid the fine so far.

Points reduction waived Payment has been delayed in cases where taxis and company vehicles have run red lights, because the tickets had to be forwarded from the company to the drivers, he said. He urged violators to pay the fines at one of the 11 locations identified on the ticket’s envelope, or call 1197 for more information. Panu said officials had been told to focus on the fines and waive the points reduction for now. The points reduction would only be imposed on red-light runners caught by police at the scene, not those caught on camera.

he businessman accused of a scam worth at least US$1.4 billion (Bt49 billion) in Japan’s biggest ever pyramid scheme had promised to build a paradise on Earth for investors, some of whom even called him divine. But to investigators, 75-yearold Kazutsugi Nami is an old hand at such scams whose personality pulled in people who thought they could get rich quick. Sporting dapper suits and wavy hair slicked back, Nami was confident even as police came to take him away early yesterday, defiantly enjoying a mug of beer in front of TV cameras. Nami wooed his so-called “shareholders” by building a cult-like status, saying he had a

“divine decree” to “eliminate poverty from this world”, a phrase that is recurrent Nami throughout his blog. “Nami was so charismatic that [investors] worshipped a ‘Nami cult’. Even he is known to have said frequently: ‘I am the law’. In this way, Nami had mind control over members,” the legal team said. Some even called him a “God”.

Nami had his first run-in with police in his late 30s. In 1971 he established a company called “APO Japan” that sold gadgets that allegedly reduced gas emissions from car engines while generating power. After his company went more or less bankrupt, he marketed a “miracle” stone, claiming it would turn tap water into mineral water. In 1978 he served a prison sentence along with other corporate officials for the scam. During his time in jail Nami wrote a dissertation “On Happiness”, which he said laid the foundation for creating his latest company.

Weighing Angkor Forty years after journeying to a ‘lost city’ in the jungle, a visitor returns and finds the temples not so serene By Augusto Villalon P H I L I P P I N E D A I LY I N Q U I R E R , Asia News Network, Siem Reap

I

n the summer of 1968, my friend Ruy travelled from his home in Saigon to the jungle deep in Cambodia to see a “lost city”. He discovered a collection of temples in a forsaken place called Angkor. Although each was spectacular in its own way, he said, Angkor Wat overwhelmed everything else. Ruy thought that I, a young architecture student, should see them, so I took his advice. My visit turned out to be a lifedefining moment that revealed my career path: I discovered I wanted to keep old monuments alive. I got to Angkor Wat at sun-

rise. It was silent. I was the only person there. Walking across the causeway over a wide moat, I saw layers of rectangular covered galleries around open courtyards, each diminishing in size as I climbed, one inside the other like the rings of an onion. Every corner was filled with stone statues so exquisite they demanded regular stops, each stop adding to the serenity of the journey to the gods at the temple’s summit. Reaching the central tower at the pinnacle, all was peace. Since that experience, I’ve often wondered if peace still reigns at Angkor Wat. On my recent return there, I arrived in a very different Siem Reap: tourists spilled out of ho-

tels, souvenir shops and restaurants that were all new to me.

Bare and lifeless shell As before, I got to Angkor Wat at sunrise, but this time I was not alone. Hundreds of tourists had already arrived, preventing me from repeating the peaceful pilgrimage of my memory, but I walked, anyway.

DAILY XPRESS

This time it was no longer silent or meditative. The sculptures that gave life and meaning to Angkor Wat were gone. Stone statues were beheaded or chopped off at their bases, victims of the terrible war and the forces of the antique trade. The reliefs that used to line the corridors were gone. The walls were blank. Today’s Angkor Wat is a bare, lifeless empty shell. It is still a monument of grandeur to rival anything in the world, but the toll taken by tourism is a heavy one that has to be paid – Angkor is an economic lifeline for Cambodia and the US$20 per day to visit the temples has paid for the abundant tourism facilities. The new Angkor updated my perspective on heritage as a tourism resource. Although the system could stand some improvement, Angkor is a property that has organised itself as a tourism resource rather well.

an theatre help us with the issues we face from day to day? The Bangplay Learning Theatre Group thinks so. The five-year-old troupe’s successful series of three plays called “Chiaochao Chumchim”, for example, questioned the ways Thai teenagers lead their sexual lives. Its new play, “Maha Nakorn 2552” (“Metropolis 2009”) deals with, as the title suggests, life in Bangkok at this moment. This is the second play in the series “Maha Nakorn”, which began in the midst of

our political turmoil last year. Using child characters who fight for their territories as a metaphor, “Maha Nakorn 2551” commented on the effects of politics on citizens. “Now that our political situation has changed, we’ve slightly shifted our focus,” says Paiboon Sophonsuwapap, who wrote and directed the play with Taweevat Kumneardpetch. “At the core of ‘Maha Nakorn 2552’ is a middle-class family in Bangkok, a different set of characters from 2551,” explains Paiboon. “A mother who works as a vendor in the Northeast pays a visit to her daughter, an events organiser, and finds she is living with a girlfriend. The

mother struggles to understand the relationship. “The inspiration came partly from our own backgrounds. Taweevat is from Bangkok while I’m from upcountry and we both now live in the capital. So one of the themes is how families split up under economic pressures: the mother can’t make a living in Bangkok and her daughter can’t survive upcountry.” Another issue in this 80minute realistic drama is that of modern families. “We show how they live out their unorthodox choice,” says Paiboon. “Living in Bangkok, they are also surrounded by modern technology, like mobile phones

ome people seem to think LGBTI-rights events are superfluous to Thai society. What is happening right now in Chiang Mai, the epitome of Thai hospitality, might open their eyes. Conservative elements have lined up against the second Chiang Mai Pride parade and are petitioning the governor to ban the February 21 event. Spearheading this demand is a former gay activist with political ambitions, which is surprising, especially when one considers that this individual

was part of Bangkok Gay Pride as far back as 2001 and as recently as 2006. The lobby group claims the parade will feature improperly dressed marchers, which goes against Thai culture. I saw no evidence of this at last year’s event, which was also the climax of the International Gay and Lesbian Association’s regional conference. The parade was a combination of a march by activists from around the region dressed in their national costumes or in plain clothes and a calm Northern-style procession – certainly not a Brazilian carnival. often disguised as cultural preservation. This conservative group presents itself as the arbiter of culture, similar to the role the Culture Ministry took in 2004 when it proposed to ban what it called “sexual deviants” from television and government posts. Such a sentiment highlights the widespread feeling that the only way gays, lesbians and transgenders can exist in Thai society is if we keep our mouths shut and be content with our lot. Gay-pride events must be held to underline the implicit prejudices and discriminations. The expression of one’s identity is a human right protected by the Thai constitution. I like to think of culture as an evolving elephant consist-

ing of different body parts. Arbitrarily banning certain elements of a living culture simply because one doesn’t like them is akin to killing the elephant to put its tusks in a museum. It seems some people are aiming to do just that.

“King James” added another chapter to his legacy. LeBron James had his 21st career triple double with a season-high 52 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds on Wednesday night, leading the Cavaliers to a 107-102 road victory over the New York Knicks. “I don’t go out there for the numbers, I just play my game,” “King James” said. “ I never thought you could look at the box score and see somebody with 50 with a triple doubl.” – DPA

Wasim hails Murali for breaking record Legendary Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram congratulated Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan on breaking his record of taking the most wickets in one-day international play. The wily off-spinner Muralitharan claimed his 503rd wicket in the fourth one-dayer against India in Colombo when he dismissed opener Gautam Gambhir. Wasim, who took 502 wickets in 356 matches before retiring from international cricket in 2003, paid tribute to Muralitharan, who achieved the feat in his 328th match. “It was only a matter of time before he broke my record. Nakamura “Most of the Australian team have played in strong European clubs for many years and they are at high levels,” he said ahead of the qualifier in Yokohama. “I don’t think we will have such a beautiful formula in which we can make a number of good passes and score goals.” he said. – AFP

eenager Dan Gosling was Everton’s hero as they knocked city rivals Liverpool out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 extra-time fourth round replay win at Goodison Park on Wednesday. There were only two minutes of extra-time remaining when Gosling, who only turned 19 on Monday, curled the ball past Pepe Reina to end the interest of Liverpool, currently second in the Premier League, in this season’s FA Cup. A miserable night for Liverpool was made worse by the sight of inspirational captain Steven Gerrard going off in the first-half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury while

Lucas was later sent-off for a second bookable offence. Everton, sixth in the topflight, will face Aston Villa in the last 16 after the team fourth in the Premier League beat Championship side Doncaster 3-1 in a fourth round replay earlier Wednesday. “It’s a great day for the club and all the fans,” Gosling said. “I was thinking ‘just shoot and get it on target’.” In another replay, Derby came from 2-0 down to beat arch East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest 3-2 and so secure a glamour fifth round tie at home to English, European and world champions Manchester United. Derby, who like Forest are struggling in the second-tier Championship, are managed by

Nigel Clough, a former Forest forward. Clough, whose late manager father Brian won the English title with both clubs back in the 1970s, left the post-match press conference duties to his assistant Gary Crosby, another former Forest player. “He [Nigel Clough] doesn’t look for any glory but he is incredibly pleased with the result and that is all he is interested in,” Crosby said. South Africa’s Benni McCarthy was Blackburn’s hero when scoring with just two minutes of extra-time remaining in their 2-1 all Premier League replay victory over Sunderland. Blackburn now face 1987 Cup winners Coventry in the fifth round. Villa scored twice in the space of four minutes against Doncaster. Steve Sidwell put

And Moyes believes there is no reason why his side cannot go all the way in the FA Cup, a competition they last won in 1995. “There is more to come from us,” said the Scot. “We’ll enjoy this moment and then we’ll move on. “We didn’t win the FA Cup by defeating Liverpool, but there will be a lot out there who will think we have.” Moyes reserved special praise for Dan Gosling, who only turned 19 on Monday and whose goal was just his second for Everton since a move from Championship side Plymouth Argyle. “He works hard in training. Dan is a well mannered boy who is always willing to learn,” said Moyes, without a recognised striker for much of this season. Louis Saha and Yakubu remained injured and Australia midfielder Tim Cahill once again played up front on his own on Wednesday. “The result ranks very highly in terms of my time here at Everton,” said Moyes, who celebrates his seventh anniversary at Goodison next month.

teven Gerrard seems set to miss the next few weeks of Liverpool’s bid for the Premier League title after sustaining a hamstring injury during their 1-0 FA Cup defeat by city rivals Everton. Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, speaking after Wednesday’s match at Goodison Park, said Reds captain Gerrard would undergo a scan to assess the full extent of the problem Now the inspirational midfielder, who as much as anyone at Anfield has helped Liverpool move to within two points of leaders Manchester United, seems certain to miss Saturday’s league match away to Portsmouth as well as England’s friendly international in Spain next week. “We need to check on Gerrard,” said a dejected Benitez after Liverpool’s first defeat in 17 outings. “He will have a scan tomorrow (Thursday). We will have to wait and see until then.” The Spaniard backed his players to bounce back from their bitter disappointment. “I didn’t want to go out of the FA Cup,” added Benitez. “I have to be disappointed with the way we have lost, but we still have the league and the Champions League this season. We are still in a very good position.” While Benitez, who has yet

espite a spirited display, Thailand found themselves at the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in a friendly in Sendai city, Japan, yesterday. In the game, held on artificial grass at the Sendai club’s stadium amid freezing conditions, the Thai side met the same fate they suffered in a friendly in Riyadh last year where they slumped to a 1-0 defeat. The result means that Thailand, whose solitary victory against the Green Eagles came in 1984, will have to wait a while for another shot. The Middle East team were easily better in the opening exchanges but it was the Thais who came close to opening the score just before the half-hour mark. Midfielder Suchao Nutnum forced the best out of the Saudi keeper with a sizzling 20-yard freekick. But it came as a little surprise when the Middle East side broke the deadlock just past the hour mark via a headed effort from a left-side corner. Moments later, it was 2-0 after the Saudi striker made no mistake when racing clear towards the goal. Ex-Man City player Teerasil Dangda hit back for the Thais in the dying seconds.

‘Ton was not meant to be’ Kevin Pietersen has dismissed criticism about his dismissal for 97 in the opening Test against West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, on Wednesday. Pietersen looked set for another Test hundred after clattering two fours and a six off successive balls from Sulieman Benn. But the former England captain tried to clear the long-on boundary with another violent slog/sweep, top-edged the delivery, and was caught by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin. “I got to 97 playing that way, so it just wasn’t meant to be,” Pietersen said. “It was very tough to get dismissed like that.” AFP

Stosur admitted she allowed Tamarine to dictate play early in the match as her strategy and confidence faltered, but said the turning point came midway through the decider. “The start of the third set was really important. If she had won that game at 3-0 who knows what would have happenned – tennis can change really quickly,” Stosur said. “I knew that game was going to be important the longer it went. To secure two breaks, you feel a lot more calm about things.”

Stosur is not ruling out Taiwan’s chances of beating the Aussies, despite being without their key players, and said Australia’s place in tomorrow’s final was not yet sealed. “Even though we’ve beaten these guys before, tomorrow you never know, and every match is going to be important to us until we get into the final,” she said. FOR MUM’S SAKE Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother wants the star to join Real Madrid, says Pepe DPA, Madrid

ristiano Ronaldo’s mother wants the World Footballer to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, according to fellow-Portugal international Pepe.“Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother has a dream: seeing her son play for Real Madrid. And everybody knows that mothers carry great weight,” Pepe said in an interview. Pepe is a good friend of Ronaldo’s and he plays for a club that has been after the winger for a long time. Last year, the operation to sign him failed over the staunch opposition of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. Pepe, a great fan of Ronaldo, explained that his mother, Dolores, wants him to move to Spain soon.“Both his mother and all his family as well as himself have made it clear that their dream is to play for Real Madrid. It is a dream that his mother has and a dream that he has too. Now we will see what happens,” the centre-back said. As to Ronaldo’s chances of settling in the Spanish capital, Pepe has few doubts. “He would not have any problems. This is a very good changing-room atmosphere. They received me very well, and with Cristiano there would not be a problem either.” Pepe smiles each time he thinks of Ronaldo – who turned

Cristiano Ronaldo, left, the Portugal captain, and defender Pepe are close pals. 24 on Thursday – as a teammate. He stresses, moreover, that the superstar portrays an image that does not match what he is really like. “People have an idea of him as a person which is completely different from the real thing. I have known him since he played for Sporting Lisbon and he is a very simple person who, like any human being, likes to dress well and to have the best stuff. Since he is in a position to buy the best, he does so.” The Real Madrid defender thinks Ronaldo’s personality is perfect for a major club, contrary to popular belief that he may be inclined to behave like a conceited prima donna.

“Ronaldo is an incredible person. He likes to jump and joke with everyone. He is the Portugal captain, but he is the first to be jumping around with everyone else,” Pepe said. One of the season’s debates is the permanent comparison between Ronaldo and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, as to who is the better player? Pepe votes for Ronaldo. “They are different footballers. For me, Cristiano has more points in his favour because he heads the ball well, he is stronger and he scores goals. Messi has quality, dribbles and scores goals. For a coach, I think Cristiano is better because he is more complete,” he said.

Micah Richards, the Manchester City and England defender, has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a teenager outside a nightclub, police said yesterday. Richards, 20, was interviewed on Wednesday by officers investigating an incident in which an 18-year-old male was assaulted in the Manchester suburb of Hale in the early hours of December 24. Richards was bailed until April 8 pending the completion of inquiries which will allow the police to decide whether he should face any charges. The defender’s arrest adds to a growing list of off-field headaches faced by City manager Mark Hughes. The club’s star player, Brazilian international Robinho, was arrested and bailed last month in connection with allegations of a serious sexual assault on a teenage university student in a Leeds nightclub. Robinho, 25, denies any wrongdoing. The City boss has also had to contend with reports that one of his most promising young players, Michael Johnson, has become a regular at casinos in the city, which the 21-year-old denies. “We are very supportive of Micah. It is an ongoing situation, we are aware of that,” Hughes said. – A F P

David Beckham controls the ball during a friendly against Rangers.

avid Beckham has pleaded with LA Galaxy chiefs to release him from his contract with the US Major League Soccer side and let him turn his loan move to Italian giants AC Milan into a permanent deal. Beckham, after playing in the first-half of Milan’s 2-2 friendly draw with Rangers here at Ibrox on Wednesday, made no secret of where his heart lay.

“At the moment my lawyers are not talking to the Galaxy but I have expressed my desire to stay at AC Milan now and it’s just down to Milan and Galaxy to come to an agreement,” he said. “I have enjoyed my time here [at Milan]. I knew I would enjoy it but I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I have.” Beckham, 33, has been in fine form since arriving at the San

Siro, scoring twice for Milan to help the club into second place in Italy’s Serie A behind city rivals Inter. “I’ve expressed my desire to stay here for a while but at the moment I’m still a Galaxy player,” Beckham said. “I respect the Galaxy and everything they have done for me. They have always been great to me.” Nevertheless, he added: “But I hope they can come to an

agreement and it’s down to the clubs now. At this point it’s out of my hands. I’ve said what my feelings are to both clubs. “To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I’ve enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it. I think people have seen the way I’ve been since playing at this level again. “It’s nothing against the MLS and the football over there.”
