taxi driver returned gold necklaces and a wad of Bt1,000 notes to a 62-year-old woman at the FM91 police traffic radio station yesterday morning. Cabbie Suchart Thiansomprasong, 42, handed a bag with Bt16,500 in cash and two gold necklaces to Thanom Ditcharoen, who left the items in his taxi on Sunday evening. Thanom said that after a trip from Bangkok to Saraburi, she realised the bag was lost but had no information on the taxi. She reported the loss to police the next day but later learned that the cabbie had already contacted FM91. “It’s great to find out there are still good-hearted people around,” said Thanom, handing Suchart a Bt5,000 reward. Suchart said he found the bag as he was putting his shopping into the trunk on Tuesday afternoon, so he called the 1644 traffic hotline. “I understand that anyone would want to get his or her lost items back,” he said.

he government has warned Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) not to poke their noses into Thailand’s handling of the Rohingya boat people. Thai Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Virasakdi Futrakul said presence of Rohingya refugees in Thailand is a controversial issue. “We must warn UNHCR that they should not comment on the matter because they

‘Their plight ignored’: Jolie The warning came after UNHCR’s goodwill ambassador Jolie, who visited Burmese camps along the Thai border last week, criticised the Thai government for ignoring the plight of the Rohingyas and suggested officials should take better care of the Burmese minority. Virasakdi told reporters that Jolie was visiting Burmese refugee camps and had no official interest in the Rohingya. “The UNHCR should not have brought Jolie to one of

the nine refugee camps stringing the border which are run by Thailand’s Interior Ministry.” “The government will issue a reprimand letter to UNHCR, asking why it allowed Angelina Jolie to visit the refugee camps,” Virasakdi said. Kitty McKinsey, UNHCR spokeswoman in Bangkok, told AFP that both Jolie and husband Brad Pitt had camp passes issued by the Interior Ministry, and said the visit was arranged with the cooperation of the Foreign Ministry. While touring the northern Ban Mai Nai Soi camp, home to 18,000 refugees from Burma, Jolie said she hoped Thailand would be “just as generous to the Rohingya

refugees who are now arriving on their shores”.

Accounts of mistreatment Hundreds of Rohingya have been found adrift at sea off the coasts of India and Indonesia in the last few months, with many of the migrants giving similar accounts of mistreatment and abandonment at the hands of the Thai military. Thailand has denied claims of cruelty, but has taken an uncompromising stance toward the boat people. Authorities insist the Rohingya are economic migrants and say they will not be offered any refuge here. “We have the right to arrest them ... we will not set up holding centres for the Rohingya but will put them in prisons,” said Virasakdi.

n Australian navy diver was seriously injured as he fought off a shark in a rare attack in Sydney Harbour yesterday, officials said. The 31-year-old diver was taking part in a defence exercise near an upmarket residential area of the harbour when he was attacked, suffering severe injuries to his right hand and thigh. Paul Degelder was rushed straight into surgery at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital. The attack took place in Woolloomooloo Bay, which is lined with seafood restaurants and celebrity flats. The diver was taking part in a trial of new technologies to protect ships from underwater attack but was on the surface when the shark struck, officials said.

THIRSTY STAR Koala guzzling from a bottle held out by a firefighter becomes a hit on YouTube AFP, Sydney, Australia

A

thirsty koala rescued from the Australian wildfires has become a star on the videosharing website YouTube, providing much-needed relief from the disaster that has killed more than 180 people. Firefighter Dave Tree stumbled across the female marsupial, nicknamed Sam, as he was battling blazes in Victoria state and was amazed when the parched animal guzzled down water from a bottle as he held her scorched paw. “Things do survive the bushfire... are you alright buddy,” he says in the footage captured by a fellow volunteer on a mobile phone. Tree described the koala as “looking pretty bewildered”. “This is amazing ... how

gently stroked her. The clip has attracted more than 30,000 hits on YouTube and Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper is selling photographs of the extraordinary encounter, with proceeds going to volunteer firefighting organisations.

A 17-year-old Hong Kong youth was in serious condition yesterday after losing most of his left hand when a home-made bomb went off in his high-rise apartment. Hundreds of people were evacuated when the block of flats in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long district was rocked by an explosion that went off at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, police said. Police found the boy in a pool of blood inside the flat with all the fingers ripped off his left hand. His father suffered minor injuries. Officers said the youth had been making a bomb using a plastic hand grenade and gunpowder. – DPA

The newspaper reported the animal suffered burns to her paws and was in a lot of pain, but was on the road to recovery at the Mountain Ash Wildlife Shelter. However, wildlife experts fear millions of native animals may have been killed in the firestorm. Victoria police yesterday issued an appeal for supplies for pets affected by the fires. They said donations of food for cats and dogs, rugs, blankets and feed for horses and any other animal supplies would be gratefully accepted.

Zebras crossing These fugitives were wearing stripes even before they were caught. Police in the German city of Augsburg say they had to chase four circus zebras through the streets after they escaped from their handlers. One of the escapees gave itself up to passers-by, and the other three were eventually corralled in a paddock. There were no injuries, either to humans or zebras, during the chase. – AP

rom the poster to the production design, “A Moment in June” – the directorial debut of 28-year-old O Nathapon Wongtreenatrkoon – seems steeped in the visual style of Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai. “He has greatly influenced my thinking, as has my other favourite filmmaker, David Lean, so yes, his movies have inspired my film. But that doesn’t mean I have copied him. On the contrary, some scenes are meant as a tribute to his work,” Nathapon explains. The lush romantic drama, set in 1972 and 1999 and intertwining three stories about love and separation, blurs the line between a stage play and reality, with a complex narrative and a visualised style. The budget was low, at just Bt10 million, but the stars are heavyweights, led by such big names as Shahkrit Yamnarm, Krisada Sukosol Clapp and Sinitta Boonyasak.

XTRA HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS >> Nataphon raised almost half of the Bt10 million financing on his own. >> Shahkrit worked with the rookie director on his thesis film, “Bicycles and Radios”, which was a hit on the festival circuit. >> “A Moment in June” (“Na Khanarak”) opens in cinemas today.

Nothing’s lost Nathapon wrote the script in English and then let his actors translate their lines into Thai by themselves, resulting in some unnatural conversations, which local filmgoers may find a little off-putting. But the director isn’t worried, pointing out that the responses of local and foreign audiences are totally opposed, even toward the same character. “It’s interesting to hear both sides. I’m surprised that my

I’LL DO ANYTHING I CAN TO MAKE IT WORK AS A THAI FILM. O Nathapon Wongtreenatrkoon film can make people think so differently,” he says. As a theatre and film graduate, O rather focuses on the characters’ ability to put across their feelings through emotions rather than lines. “I’d rather concentrate on the emotional communication rather than dialogue, which sometimes has little meaning to the story. If I wanted to communicate just through dialogue, I’d rather make a radio drama than movie.” However, he has made compromises for the local audience. After screenings at Pusan and the World Film Festival of Bangkok last year, he’s created a Thai version, which is 6.30 minutes shorter and has two more songs. And even though half his life has been spent in the West, he still feels a strong connection to his homeland. “I’ll do anything I can to make it work as a Thai film,” he says.

The right dose of salt The link between salt and hypertension is now being debated By Oliver Stenzel DEUTSCHE PRESSE-AGENTUR Dresden, Germany

E

ating an egg for breakfast in peace is not always easy given the common admonition, “Don’t use so much salt!” While high consumption of table salt has long been blamed for high blood pressure, some scientists now are not so sure. Beyond dispute, however, is that the human body’s fluid balance and absorption of nutrients depend on salt, which maintains osmotic pressure in the lining of blood vessels, says Stephan Bischoff, a professor of nutritional medicine at Hohenheim University in Germany. Salt enables the passage of nutrients into cells, and of waste out of them. It is also important in areas including the transmission of nerve impulses, muscle movement and bone density. “Salt also causes the body to retain water,” adds Bischoff, pointing out that a salt deficiency could lead to dehydration. An adult requires a daily minimum of 1.4 grams of salt to compensate for the salt lost normally by the body. Sweating or diarrhoea can greatly raise the requirement.

How much salt is healthy? The question is not easy to answer. The standard given by the Bonn-based German Nutrition Society (DGE) is six grams daily for adolescents and adults, with an upper limit of 10 grams. “Exceeding this amount could lead, in individual cases, to negative consequences for health,” said DGE spokesperson Antje Gahl. The guarded phrasing reflects the fact that salt intake is no longer generally linked to high blood pressure or hypertension. “There has been no reliable study proving that the average salt intake in the healthy population contributes to high blood pressure,” notes Karl-Ludwig Resch, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Dresden University. “There many possible causes of high blood pressure and many ways to lower it, too, among which reducing the consumption of table salt is one of the least effective.” There are no uniform recommendations on how much salt a person should consume though most doctors agree a diet low in salt would do no one any harm.

the pros Will medicines for hair loss kill my liver? Looks like I’ve inherited the baldness gene from my father. I take Finasterlide pills and rub Minoxidil lotion on my bald patch, but I’m worried they may be harmful to my liver in the long run. Any advice? Thidakarn Ratanabanangkoon

is an anti-ageing physician and dermatologist at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital’s Esthetics Institute.

T

he most common type of hair loss in men is called Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) – or male-pattern bald-

ness. The end result can be complete baldness in some men, but examination by a dermatologist is required for proper diagnosis and a treatment plan. The medications you describe are the two most commonly used to treat AGA. In most cases, results with Minoxidil are slow and not dramatic. Patients with a history of heart disease or high

blood pressure should consult their doctors before using it. Like Minoxidil, Finasteride is an FDA-approved medication. It decreases the level of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone, which can result in the regrowth of hair. In high doses, Finasteride can cause loss of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction. However, stick to the 1 milligram dose recommended for

treating AGA and you should be fine – side effects are rare if you follow the instructions. Finasteride is metabolised by the liver, so caution must be used when prescribing it to patients with impaired liver function. But to my knowledge, there is no evidence of liver toxicity resulting from long-term use by patients with normal liver function.

THE SPORT briefly James goes off for 47, but Pacers edge Cavs

Lebron James

LeBron James went off for 47 points, but the Cleveland Cavaliers star then committed a controversial game-ending foul which made him and coach Mike Brown fume at the referee. Danny Granger hit the game-winning free throw with two tenths of a second left to give the Indiana Pacers a wild 96-95 victory over the visiting Cavaliers. James disagreed with the call, saying: “There was no contact made.” – DPA

A-Rod chaos a distraction for Jeter

Jayawardene quits as Sri Lanka captain

New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter sees the latest doping controversy swirling around teammate Alex Rodriguez as just another distraction in the chaos that typically swirls around the club. “I’m not addressing Alex’s situation until everybody’s here,” Jeter said. “I don’t want to talk to guys today and have three more people show up. It’s better to get everyone together. “Are things a distraction? It’s a distraction when you talk about it every single day.” – AFP

Mahela Jayawardene yesterday decided to step down as Sri Lanka’s cricket captain after the upcoming Tests in Pakistan, saying he was doing it “in the best interests” of the team. “This is something I have been considering for some time as it has been my long-held belief that my successor should have at least 18 months in the job to imprint his vision on the team for the 2011 World Cup,” Jayawardene, 31, said. Kumar Sangakkara, the current vice- Jayawardene captain and Jayawardene’s close friend, was likely to take over as skipper, local media speculated. – AFP

Ribery sticks with Munich for now Franck Ribery has no intention of leaving Bayern Munich in the near future, but will not commit himself to the German Bundesliga champions on a long-term basis. Confronted with big interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid and other clubs, The French star Ribery said that “no one must be afraid that Ribery will leave the Bundesliga.” Ribery, 25, has contract in Munich until 2011 which Munich would like to renew as early as possible. But Ribery said “that depends on the talks between my adviser and the club.” Ribery named Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City as clubs interested in him. – DPA

He’s the first player from Togo to win the honour in the award’s 38-year history. – AP

SAMBA MAGIC

Brazil’s breathtaking display halts Italy’s awesome unbeaten run THE GUARDIAN, London

S

o it was not such a bad week for Brazilian expats in England after all. A masterclass from the men in yellow with footballing sunshine in their souls swatted aside the world champions. Two goals made in Manchester, finished sublimely by Elano and Robinho, underlined why Brazil remains the most exportable nationality in the global game. With the sudden availability of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the scrutiny of the current coach Dunga was particularly sharp. Some Brazilians had been pondering whether it might be time for a successful old face to regain care of the footballing dreams of nearly 200 million compatriots.

Dunga’s Selecao duly delivered one of their most scintillating exhibitions for years, in front of a cacophonous audience. And so ended Marcello Lippi’s awesome run of 31 games undefeated with the Azzurri. Although he might curse the decision making of Howard Webb, who disallowed two goals (Fabio Grosso’s offside call was marginal, Luca Toni’s handball correct), he could not argue that his team were anywhere near Brazil’s wavelength. Midway through the second half Ronaldinho actually won a freekick simply by dancing. Italy had nothing to compare. Brazil scored a sumptuous opener in the 14th minute, with Elano linking exquisitely with

the two Rs. He picked up a pass from Ronaldinho, flicked a backheel to Robinho, and skipped on to the return before flummoxing Gianluigi Buffon. It demonstrated all the gifts that make him feel so outraged by his exclusion at Eastlands. Mysteriously, the ‘Lippi 32 not out’ banner that had hung from behind the goal where the Selecao celebrated disappeared. Italy were shattered 13 minutes later when Robinho mesmerised every pair of eyes in the stadium with a goal of startling virtuosity. Andrea Pirlo will not look upon it so fondly as he was guilty of careless dawdling on the edge of his own area, only to be pickpocketed by the most expensive player in the history of the English game. Robinho twisted past Gianluca Zambrotta and threaded a subtle shot past Buffon.

ON RUSSIA’S MANAGER GUUS HIDDINK TAKING OVER AT CHELSEA

ITALY COACH AFTER THE DEFEAT

“He did this before with Australia and PSV, I think. I prefer to think only in one job, not in two jobs. As a club manager you practise every day and you can change every day, you can talk with the players every day. Being England team manager is different.”

est

“I don’t think this hurts. Obviously I am not used to losing but we lost against Brazil, not the worst team in the world. I’m not concerned. It is a normal step in the construction of a new team. We started rebuilding the team six months ago. Step by step we will do it.”

Robinho fabulous, Italy foul, says Brazil coach

B

Brazil were in classic superskills mode. Dunga, in a sheepskin overcoat that was vintage John Motson, looked on so calmly it was difficult not to spare a thought for Scolari, who well appreciates what different worlds the club and international manager inhabit these days. Italy, not quite fielding their strongest available team – Lippi used the exercise to polish his desire to establish two players in every position – struggled to apply pressure of their own. Grosso and Daniele de Rossi provided their most enthusiastic offerings. Italy were more threatening after the interval. Giuseppe Rossi struck the side-netting immediately, and later set up Toni with a smart cross the big striker latched on to. But even Brazil’s goalkeeper, Julio Cesar, captured the imagination with a

wonderfully agile stop. Ultimately, Italy may as well accept that if Lippi’s record was going to end some time, it may as well be to opponents who were simply outstanding. Lippi conceded that his side had been beaten by a better team, but he was adamant his decision to field a relatively inexperienced line-up was the right one. “In this moment it is clear they played technically better than us,” Lippi said. “We are at a moment when we are rebuilding our team. We struggle and we suffer. Of course we can’t debate the supremacy of Brazil. “The thing I liked least was the fear. We were a little bit intimidated. Obviously Brazil is one of the best but if you want to be competitive, even against the best in the world, we need to show a different mentality.”

After struggling to win over the critics who feel his cautious tactics betrayed Brazil’s legacy as guardians of the beautiful game, Dunga was entitled to feel his team’s dismantling of Italy had made an eloquent point about his philosophy. But with tricky World Cup qualifiers ahead, Dunga refused to gloat and emphasised that this result must be the springboard for a successful year for Brazil. “We played against Italy who hadn’t lost for 38 matches, so it was one of the best wins,” he said. “We finished last year well and have started this year very well. “I talked to all the players and told them in order to be a good team we need to be humble. “People are sentimental and emotional when things go well. When things go down a bit people talk more. Every thing I say people blow it up. “But with the squad we had against this opposition, I am happy.” Dunga was happy to praise the contribution of Manchester City forward Robinho, who outshone even rejuvenated team-mate Ronaldinho by setting up the first goal and scoring a sublime second. “Everyone knows what the qualities of Robinho are. He showed good personality.”

ewcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is to undergo a heart bypass operation and could miss the rest of the season, the BBC reported yesterday. The 62-year-old, who had a heart attack 10 years ago when he was Wimbledon manager, was taken ill before his Premier League side’s match against West Bromwich Albion last Saturday. Kinnear, who took over at Newcastle last September and whose contract runs to the end of the season, is set to have the operation tomorrow. Chris Hughton, Kinnear’s assistant, take charge of the team in his absence.

Brazil forward Robinho, left, is brought down by Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro during the international friendly at the Emirates Stadium in London. Brazil won 2-0.

razil coach Dunga insisted his war of words with Italy’s Marcello Lippi and Gianluca Zambrotta won’t take the gloss off his side’s impressive 2-0 win over the world champions. Dunga became embroiled in an unseemly spat with Italy defender Zambrotta as he came to the touchline to protest about a series of fouls on his players during the friendly international at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Both teams were fiercely competitive throughout the match, with Brazil also guilty of over-zealous challenges. So it was hardly surprising that Dunga came under fire from Lippi, who said: “If we had complained like that about some of the strong fouls they did in the first half there would have been all sorts of confusion. To get up off the bench like that is just not right.” But Dunga refused to apologise for his touchline outburst after goals from Elano and Robinho clinched the best result of his time in charge of the Selecao. “It was Zambrotta who started to talk to me. About what Lippi said, to be honest, if I had to say something every time Italy made a foul we wouldn’t even have played. Unfortunately that is the way football is,” he said.

Real Madrid will borrow US$90 million from Spain’s largest bank Santander to help finance the purchase of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, Spanish radio said yesterday. But the loan will not be enough to cover the transfer fee, private station Cadena Ser said. “Cristiano Ronaldo already has an agreement with Manchester to leave for Real at the end of the season,” the station said, without indicating its source.

GUUS FLIES TO CHELSEA Hiddink expects to be at Stamford Bridge by next week AP, London

ussia coach Guus Hiddink expects to take charge of Chelsea next week, managing the Premier League club until the end of the season. “I expect to be on the pitch next week,” Hiddink told Radio 538 in the Netherlands yesterday. The Dutchman said he is ready to replace the fired Luiz Felipe Scolari on an interim basis while continuing to coach Russia. He said he is acting out of solidarity with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who is the financial backer of the Russian national team. “It’s a favour for a friend. Abramovich does so much for Russian football that I wanted to give something back. He called me personally,” Hiddink said. “I can do it because we [Russia] are only playing two

Guus Hiddink has a fantastic record as a coach. matches in April and one in June, but the English league is finished then.” Hiddink said he hopes to attend Chelsea’s FA Cup match at Watford on Saturday as a spectator, and then be in charge for the following weekend’s Premier League match at Aston Villa. Assistant Ray Wilkins is

coaching the team on an interim basis. Hiddink didn’t rule out staying at Chelsea permanently. “There are two scenarios,” he said. “Either they say: ‘Go back to the East’ or it all goes well, and then ... but that is not ideal.” AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is considered the

favourite to take over on a permanent basis next summer. “If the position will be open in July then I think he might consider it,” Milan director Umberto Gandini said. “He did already have a chance to consider it when he was approached last summer.” Scolari was fired on Monday after seven months in charge with Chelsea languishing in fourth place in the standings, seven points behind leader Manchester United. Russia have two World Cup qualifying games over the course of the rest of the English league season – at home to Azerbaijan on March 28 and away to Liechtenstein four days later. Those dates should not conflict with Chelsea league games, and the qualifiers are games Russia should win comfortably as they chase Germany for the top spot in Group 4. Only the group winners are guaranteed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, with the runners-up then chasing a play-off spot.

ermany captain Michael Ballack said he and his Chelsea team-mates bore much of the responsibility for the team’s failings this season which led to the firing of coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. “We wanted to have success. That it didn’t always work out at the end is surely not only the fault of the coach but also of us players,” Ballack was quoted as saying in German newspapers. “Scolari has shown in the past that he is a successful coach,” Ballack said in Duesseldorf, where the German team were playing Norway in a friendly yesterday. Scolari was fired by Chelsea on Monday. “I found it surprising. I am here with the national team and then suddenly something like that happens, it’s not pleasant,” Ballack said.

TAMMY TAKES REVENGE Thai ace gets the better of Uzbeki Akgul in 1st round By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS

amarine Tanasugarn exacted sweet revenge over Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan in the first round of the US$220,000 PTT Pattaya Open yesterday to register her first WTA match win of the year. After dismal results in Hobart and the Australian Open, Tammy eventually snapped her losing streak with a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory over the towering Uzbek, who handed the Thai a painful defeat in the Fed Cup in Bangkok last year. “Yeah!” exulted the Thai No 1 in response to question about her season’s first win. “Honestly I wasn’t thinking about a win going into the match because I didn’t want to think ahead. My goal was to focus on one point at a time.” Both players were in a similar

Former world No 4 Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan, 38, suffered cramp in the third set and lost 6-2 4-6 6-4 to eighth seed

Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia after two hours and 13 minutes. “I was disappointed because I was well prepared for this tournament. I don’t know why I got cramp because I’ve rarely suffered fromit in the past. I have to find out what went wrong,” said the veteran. Third seed and world No 19 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia withdrew with flu and was replaced by Japanese “lucky loser” Ryko Fuda of Japan. In second-round action, fifthseeded Peng Shuai of China overcame a sluggish start to beat Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 and become the first player to book a quarter-final berth. Vera Dushevina of Russia upset fourth seed and 2007 champion Sybille Bammer of Austria 6-4 7-5. Scolari was victim of a revolt: Terry A F P , Seville, Spain

C

helsea captain John Terry has dropped a strong hint that a revolt by some of the club’s players triggered the dismissal of Luiz Felipe Scolari. Although he insisted that he personally had been shocked by Scolari’s sacking and described the Brazilian as a “great man”, Terry made it clear that not all of the Chelsea squad were of the same opinion. Against a background of reports that Michael Ballack, Petr Cech and Didier Drogba had agitated for Scolari to be sacked, Terry pointedly stressed that he and a “few” other stars had been behind him. “I was very shocked at the time and disappointed because myself and a few of the players at the club were fully behind the manager,” Terry said, later putting the number of Scolari loyalists at just “two or three players.”
