isitors to a science fair next month will get a taste of a future swimming with robot fish invented by Thai scientists. Scientists across the world have been developing robot fish for years in an effort to learn their swimming secrets and use them to increase the speed and efficiency of boats and other watercraft. The US are leaders in the field, says Assistant Professor Saroj Saimek, but the robot fish project at his Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) is right on its tail.

ith passions running high ahead of February 14, a survey revealed yesterday the dirty tricks that teenagers use to get each other into bed during the Valentine’s period. Conducted in January, the Rajanagarindra Institute poll on adolescent mental health found that teens lure their lovers into having sex with a variety of tactics. Dinner dates are a favourite way to begin the seduction, according to 76 per cent of the 393 high-school students polled. These are usually followed by a trip to a nightclub, karaoke bar or
cinema, where the “victims” are loosened up with alcohol. What comes next is often an invitation to meet the parents, but they’re not around when the couple arrive, leaving the way clear for the sexual predator to pounce.
Alcohol and pornography Other popular ploys include plying the target with alcohol and pornographic videos, and the invitation to spend a night by the beach over the Valentine’s weekend. The request for sex often comes with a threat to end the relationship if the partner doesn’t say yes. Fifty-two per cent of those polled cited dresses that are
strapless or have spaghetti-straps as classic female seduction attire. Rajanagarindra Institute’s director, Dr Bandit Sornpaisarn, suggested teenagers protect themselves against the pressure to have sex around Valentine’s Day by avoiding being in private places alone with their sweethearts, not drinking alcohol and not dressing too provocatively. If they want to have sex, he said, use condoms. “ If your boyfriend asks you to have sex on Valentine’s Day and threatens to break up if you say no, think about leaving him,” Bandit added. “If he just wants sex, he probably doesn’t care much about your future together.”

isha Susan is on an unusual Valentine’s Day mission, sorting out piles of cards, letters and lots of pink underwear – all destined for a right-wing Hindu vigilante group. “There are many of these coming every day,” says the 20-something Susan, holding up a pair of vivid pink panties. Susan is founder of the “Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women” – a group she set up as a provocative response to a recent attack by Hindu extremists on young women drinking in a bar.

An Australian man who climbed bare-chested onto a hotel roof to help save children sheltering from wildfires raging all around was hailed in parliament as a hero yesterday. Armed only with a garden hose, tradesman Peter Thorneycroft, 43, fought flying embers hitting the roof as dozens of children huddled in the hotel’s
TV footage of Sri Ram Sena (SRS), or Army of Lord Ram, activists chasing, slapping and kicking the terrified women prompted widespread condemnation and outrage. The attackers, who style themselves as guardians of traditional Hindu values, were briefly detained and then released on bail, prompting Susan to take matters into her own hands. Using the Facebook social networking site, she appealed to Indian women to send in their pink “chaddis” – a colloquial Hindi term for underwear. The panties would then be sent to the SRS as a special “gift” for Valentine’s Day – an event the rightwing group denounces as Western and decadent. The activists of one of India’s largest Hindu nationalist organisations are sometimes disparagingly
referred to as “chaddi-wallahs” because of the khaki shorts they wear for official functions. The Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women already has 20,000 members and the underwear is coming in thick and fast.
‘Hindu army’ unfazed In the wake of the pub attack, India’s Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowduri compared the SRS to the Taleban in Afghanistan, but the group’s leadership was unrepentant. Not only did it defend the violence, but it also warned that any shops buying into the Valentine’s Day market would face attack. “Drinking, socialising, celebrating Valentine’s Day is all part of Western culture which is corrupting our Indian culture,” SRS general-secretary VK Rajesh said. “We are not against love. But we are against loose morals we see among the younger generation.” He did not seem fazed by the impending deluge. “Those who send us the underwear, we will send them pink saris. It is symbolic of Indian culture,” he says. But for Susan and her co-campaigners, it is the SRS that is breaking the social taboos. “Today they say don’t go to pubs. Tomorrow they will say don’t go to work. Then they can demand that we cover our faces,” a protester said.

onight, Retox is launching its first series of “Toolroom Knights” at 808 with DJ Paul Thomas jousting at the deck. Thomas has racked up gigs on five continents and at countless big venues around the world – not bad for a 29year-old who only started deejaying 10 years ago. He rumbled onto the UK dance scene with thunderous sets at Birmingham’s Godskitchen, where he landed a residency in 2003. Now he’s also Toolroom Records’ producer and a Global Underground artist. We had a chat before his Bangkok debut.

The border stands very prominently in our love lives, and in an opposite way from what most people would imagine. Instead of those geographically close to us, the only men who we have a realistic chance of sharing our lives with are foreigners. How many Thai men can actually accept what Thai society calls “second-class women” as the other half of their lives? How many can withstand what their families and neighbours would say? because neither Thailand nor Austria has legalised same-sex marriage. They had hopes when Thai legislators discussed a bill on legal recognition of sex change and the Austrian parliament debated
same-sex marriage. Both hopes were doubly crushed when the Thai bill didn’t pass and the Austrian Parliament was abruptly dissolved. Although the embassy recognised their relationship, they could grant Dee – an optometry shop manager – only threemonth visitor visas. Luckily the couple found an Austrian transgender forum that advised them of a judiciary precedent in Austria allowing marriage in a similar case. After many hurdles they were legally united in Austria, where they now live. Another case illustrates the problems in Thailand. American executive chef Lee fell in love online with executive secretary Jin and
moved to Thailand to be with her. After two years of living together they had a wedding and religious ceremony (pictured) on Koh Samet, happily surrounded by families and friends. However their otherwise happy couple life has met with various legal obstacles. Since their marriage isn’t recognised by either country, Jin can’t adopt Lee’s surname. Now running a resort together on Samui, they face trouble because of the lack of a marriage certificate, not only in their personal but also professional lives. A bank has rejected their joint application as spouses for a business loan. If Thailand is literally the “land of the free”, why is the freedom to love allowed for some and not others? For many transgenders, Valentine’s Day may never arrive.

abio Capello has insisted England will learn from the footballing lesson dished out by European champions Spain as they strolled to a 2-0 friendly win here. The revival in England’s fortunes since the Italian took charge was firmly placed in perspective by the superiority of a Spanish side that always appeared to have an additional gear in reserve that was never required. Goals from David Villa and second-half substitute Fernando Llorente ensured the home side’s superiority was reflected in the margin of victory on a night that saw David Beckham equal the late Bobby Moore’s record of 108 outfield caps. Capello was unhappy that his side had failed to put Spain under greater pressure but recognised that they were always likely to struggle against oppo-
nents who have now put together a 29-match unbeaten run including 27 wins. “I think this game was very important for us,” Capello said. “We played against one of the best teams in the world and we knew the difficulties that we would have to meet during the game. “I learned a lot of things about my team that will help for the next games we have to play for World Cup qualification.” Capello denied that the defeat had left him feeling pessimistic about England’s chances of mixing it with the world’s best at the World Cup finals in South Africa next year. “Spain have one of the best midfields in the world, they won the Euro and it is almost as if they are playing from memory. They are very good at keeping the ball and they can punish you if you make one mistake. “We can’t play the same style: we have to play with our style

Beckham reaching 108 “was a tribute to a man who has always refused to sacrifice his England career for the increasingly rapacious demands of the clubs,” wrote one commentator in The Daily Mirror. The Sun also praised Beckham’s achievement, saying that while some saw him as “an over-hyped creation of a rabid celebrity era”, there was no doubting his commitment to England. There “could be no higher accolade” than to be linked with Moore, it added, describing Beckham as “one of the most extraordinary figures of modern times”. “Beckham’s arrival on 108 does not challenge what Moore achieved,” said the Daily Telegraph, adding: “Both were and are men of their time, footballers whose appeal stretched beyond the field of play.” – A F P and the players we have. even-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher said yesterday he was fine as he nursed cuts and bruises at home after escaping serious injury during a motorcycle accident while testing in Spain. Schumacher was taken to hospital after a crash at the race track in the Spanish city of Cartagena on Wednesday, but was later discharged and flew home to his family who live near Lake Geneva. “Thanks for the many ‘Get Well Soon’ wishes, but I am fine today,” Schumacher wrote on his website yesterday. “I am not perhaps as articulate as usual, but all checks show that everything is okay.” False reports in the Spanish media on Wednesday, citing sources at the track, had claimed the 40-year-old had multiple injuries and was left unconscious after the accident.

C Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti says he has no intention of becoming Chelsea’s manager. The London club fired Luiz Felipe Scolari on Monday, and hired Russia coach Guus Hiddink as his replacement until the end of the season. Ancelloti has been considered Chelsea’s top choice to take over fulltime in the summer. “The only club that has made a move to sign me has been Chelsea,” Ancelotti told La Stampa newspaper yesterday. “In the summer I met Abramovich but I didn’t want to leave AC Milan.
