GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Road accidents a major issue By Dr Taejin Siripanich Don’t Drink-Drive Foundation

R

oad accidents are an issue that Bangkok governors ignore, promising only to ease the capital’s traffic. Why don’t they pay attention to reducing road accidents instead? They can usually be avoided. At least 600 people per year, or two people a day, die on the road in Bangkok and alcohol is usually the cause for half those deaths. The government should provide resources, budget and equipment to find ways to reduce road accidents.

ith only 2.3 per cent of us donating blood, Thailand is lagging behind the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) standard of 3 per cent to guarantee a country’s health, the Red Cross Society has revealed. But this year’s “Passing the Merit with Blood Donation” campaign yesterday urged existing donors to give blood banks a shot in the arm by upping their donations to once every three months. The Red Cross’s blood donation chief Wanlop Chiaravanont also invited those who give blood to family members to spread the benefit further.

Merit-making activity He added that the campaign would focus on blood donation as a merit-making activity, encouraging people to do it on birthdays and religious holidays. This would increase the amount of donations and help to meet patients’ needs. Those donating blood for the second time from April will receive a “meritrecording” book with speeches by Their Majesties and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. DAILY

REEL REGULATIONS Thailand’s new rating system will divide films into seven categories from May DAILY XPRESS

T

he country’s first film-rating system will be up and running in May after the Cabinet approved four draft regulations yesterday. Rather than the five categories used elsewhere, Thailand’s system will classify films into seven categories. “The extra categories are for films that should be promoted on cultural or artistic merit, and films that should be banned for inappropriate content,” Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch said. Films that authorities deem to offend the monarchy, threaten national security, hamper national unity, insult faiths, disrespect honourable figures, chal-

lenge morals or contain explicit sex scenes will be banned from Thai screens. The five other categories are similar to those used in rating systems elsewhere.

Special ratings The “General Audiences” category is for films with no sex, abusive language or violence. The “13” category excludes violence, brutality, inhumanity, bad language and indecent gestures, rules that are relaxed slightly for the “15” rating. Films with an “18” rating can explore the darker side of human nature but must not show scenes of exposed genitalia, crime or drugs. Then there are

films for viewers aged 20 and above. Sex scenes are allowed here but only if viewers don’t get a peek of genitalia.

Bt20-million project to transform Bangkok into “Teen Town” will run until September, said Deputy Bangkok Metropolitan Authority Governor Thaya Theepasuwan yesterday. The plan covers three measures:

Showcasing ideas First, the “Teen Town Street” will allow youngsters to earn extra income by selling goods or performances at the Victory Monument area’s Victory Point Plaza every second and forth Saturday of the month. Second, “Teen Town” public stages at 12 areas across the city will gather ideas for Bangkok’s plans to become a youth-friendly city, and third, a “teens’ friends clinic” will be launched at every district office.

It’s not all bad Thai Film Director Association chairman Yongyoot Thongkongtoon said the regulations would give a framework for film directors. One positive side is that it might encourage less lowgrade comedies and more movies with substance, he said. “We’ll have to wait and see what the new system brings in the long run.” Director and producer Prachya Pinkaew, who sits on the panel that prepared the draft regulations, said he was happy to see the system sail through the Cabinet. The regulations have been dogged by criticism since they were first unveiled.

Something for all ages Youngsters aged 15 to 25 will also get the chance to shine at the Yaowachon Prakai Petch Award ceremony on September 5. It covers outstanding achievements in 10 categories including sport, cultural promotion, environmental conservation, social development, antidrugs campaigns, and innovations. Those interested can submit their works to the Thai-Japanese Youth Centre of Bangkok until May 29.

iPhone helping blackjack cheaters Card-counting software turns mobile phone, iPods into illegal tools at casinos A F P , San Francisco

L

as Vegas casino operators are on the lookout for blackjack cheaters using a card-counting iPhone application designed to help players win. Nevada gaming control officials have sent warnings to casinos about card-counting software that turns iPhone cellphones or iPod Touch MP3 players into illegal tools for beating the odds at blackjack tables. “Once this program is installed on the phone through the iTunes website it can make counting cards easy,” Nevada

gaming control board member Randall Sayre wrote in a February 5 letter to casino operators.

Using ‘Stealth Mode’ “When the program is used in the ‘Stealth Mode’ the screen of the phone will remain shut off, and as long as the user knows where the keys are located the program can be run effortlessly without detection.” Players using the program simply tap a virtual button on the screen each time a card 10 or higher is turned up and tap a different button

for lower-value cards. A mini-software program continually updates a “true count”, which with one peek can provide feedback regarding a player’s chances of winning by getting cards with total values that are closest to 21 points without exceeding that amount.

Apple devices aid players Nevada officials said they were tipped that players in Northern California casinos have been using the cardcounting software on the popular Apple devices. It is illegal in Nevada to have or use card-counting gadgets in casinos, but players are allowed to try to keep count in their heads.

ver since 7th Scene’s vocalist Apiwat “Stamp” Uaethavornsuk released his debut solo outing, “Million Ways To Write Part 1”, rumours have been circulating that he’s parted ways with his bandmates and embarked on a solo career. Not so says Stamp. “We are not at loggerheads. The CD is just a side project reflecting my thoughts,” he insists. And the title? “It’s a send up

of Boyd Kosiyabong’s “Million Ways To Love Part 1”, he says, grinning at the sly dig at his mentor and LoveIS label head. The album confirms the 26year-old’s status as a songwriter. He also penned Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre’s “Namta” (“Tears”), which was a winner at last year’s Season Awards. His other credits include Boyd-Pod’s “Rak Khun Khao Ik Laew”, Moderndog’s “Ngern Laan” and August’s “Fun Waan Aai Joob” for the movie “4 Romances”.

“Khwam Khid” (“Thought”), a track off his solo album, is featured on the soundtrack of the romantic drama “A Moment In June”, which is now in cinemas. “That came about when the photographer for my album cover gave my CD to O Nathapon, the movie’s director. He thought that song, which is about a couple who have separated, would go well with his storyline,” says the 26-year-old.

Umbrella inspiration Three tracks on the CD – “Rom” (“Umbrella”), “Song Muen” (“20,000”), and a live version of 7th Scene’s

“Thrisadee See Chompoo” (“Pink Theory) were inspired by Newklom, the pseudonym of a contributor to A day magazine. “I’ve always been fascinated by the way he writes, and his article “A Day in the Rainy Season”, about how the umbrella is really designed for two people, stuck in my mind. I imagined how lonely a guy would feel if he were alone under his umbrella,” he says of “Rom”. “Song Muen”, he adds, is based on the length of the average life – 20,000 days – and was inspired by an article on Cambodia.

Our Bright Future Tracy Chapman (Elektra)

Two decades and eight albums on, Tracy Chapman is as interesting as ever, showcasing her signature folksy sound and poignant, heartfelt lyrics that perfectly match her warm vocals. The title track is a bittersweet standout tune with organ and banjo while “Conditional” is backed by melancholic guitar, She sings with a slight country twang on “A Theory” and a bit of the blues on “Save Us All”. My favourite tracks is the jazzy piano-infused “I Did It All”, a clever number that recalls her earlier days, with the lines “Slept in late/ Stayed up for days/ Partied hard/ Lived my twenties in a haze/ Smoked second-hand in crowded bars/ With the A-list of B-list movie stars”.

For Thailand, it came as a two-CD package with rare tracks like “We Are the World” featuring Jackson’s voice only, “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu”, the Spanish version of “I Just Can't Stop Loving You", and “Say Say Say”, which has him duetting with Paul McCartney. Seeds of a million meals Versatile, convenient and happy to be paired with any other food, grains are diverse – and all prepared the same way LOS ANGELES TIMES

N

ot only are grains ancient foods, trailing history and culture like scattered footprints, they’re also the foundation of many easy and healthful dishes. And though the flavours of grains can be very different – quinoa is subtle and faintly grassy, farro is nutty and surprisingly sweet – they’re often virtually interchangeable within recipes. Once you find a dish you like, you can make it again and again, substituting whatever grains you have on hand or experimenting with new ones. Grains, like pasta, can be cooked with other ingredients, but a simpler and more direct method is to cook the grains separately first, just by boiling them until tender in lightly salted water. This increases the versatility of the grains and the recipes

The cooked grains will keep nicely for about five days stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator, so making more than you’ll use in a single dish can be handy. Consider cooked grains as you would a bowl of pasta or brown rice: as the basis for a one-dish meal, a stir-fry or composed salad or even a casserole. LOS ANGELES TIMES PHOTO

Drain off any excess water – what’s important is not that all the water is absorbed but that the grains are cooked correctly, and are not mushy. You can add more water during cooking if you think the grains are in danger of scorching. Then allow the cooked grains to cool slightly while you assemble the rest of the components.

themselves, since you can add cooked grains to any number of dishes, or make the same dish with a variety of different grains. Cook a big pot of bulgur or millet or barley at the start of the week, then use a cup of it in a garden salad, tossed with a vinaigrette dressing and spiked with fresh herbs.

Another cup might go into a just-finished pot of hearty minestrone soup, another into a warm side dish of roasted vegetables and feta cheese. Start cooking a pot of grains by following the instructions on the package. Use lightly salted water in a ratio of two or three parts water to one part grain.

Organisers cite security concerns Dubai organisers of the Barclays Championships yesterday cited security concerns and “public sentiment” in the volatile Middle East as likely motives for a ban of Israeli player Shahar Peer from the event. Three days after the United Arab Emirates government denied the No 45 a visa, the situation threatened to explode into a full-fledged diplomatic incident. Suggestions that the rich Dubai event could be wiped from the WTA calendar have made the rounds, with officials also taking a wait-and- see approach to next week’s men’s ATP tournament on possible entry of a pair of Israeli doubles players. – DPA

Coach criticises Hoffenheim players Coach Ralf Rangnick has bitterly criticised Hoffenheim’s players after the team lost the lead in the Bundesliga, saying their “girlfriends’ handbags had become more important than football.” “My players have been reading for weeks and months how good they were,” coach Rangnick said. “They were treated like pop stars, photographed as models, the handbags of girlfriends became more important that football. “My players have to concentrate on things that made us so strong in the first half of the season,” he said. – AP

Collingwood ton puts England on top Paul Collingwood became the second century-maker in the England first innings when he hit his eighth Test hundred against West Indies in the third Test on Monday. West Indies made an unsteady start to reach 55 for one, replying to England’s total of 566 for nine declared when stumps were drawn on the second day at the Antigua Recreation Ground. Collingwood made 113 and shared three half-century stands to beef up the England Collingwood total after captain Andrew Strauss’s 169. – AFP

Wenger hopes Eduardo can spark Arsenal revival via the FA Cup AFP, London

A

rsene Wenger believes Eduardo’s fairytale return to action with Arsenal can help his side get their spluttering season back on track. After almost a year on the sidelines, Eduardo was back with a bang on Monday as his double strike inspired Arsenal’s 4-0 FA Cup fourth round replay win over Cardiff at the Emirates Stadium. The Croatian forward showed no signs of any rust following his long rehabilitation from the horrific broken leg and ankle suffered in a challenge with Birmingham’s Martin Taylor last February. Eduardo gave the kind of virtuoso display sorely lacking

from any of his team-mates in recent weeks and, although he had to come off after 66 minutes with a slight hamstring strain, Wenger is confident the 25-yearold will play a key role in Arsenal’s bid to finish in the Premier League’s top four and win the Champions League and FA Cup. “I am very happy to have him back because he gives us options,” Wenger said. “He can play on the flank, he can play central, he can play behind the striker or up front on his own. It is fantastic for us. “Of course everybody is happy for him. It was good to see us play with the handbrake off. Eduardo played a big part in that.

“He is intelligent, talented, he understands quickly what is happening and reacts well to every situation. That is why he is a striker.” Eduardo was overcome with emotion after his comeback and paid tribute to his family for helping him emerge unscathed from the gruelling recovery period. “It was the best day of my life because it proved I can play again,” he said. “It was a special moment to score and very emotional. I had tears in my eyes. “I celebrated by kissing my wedding ring because my wife Andreja, daughter Lorena and family supported me right through this.” Wenger claimed it was Eduardo’s mental strength that was the key to his return to full fitness. “I’m not surprised he did well. He made a big step forward in

training a couple of weeks ago. You could see he had found sharpness and got rid of a bit of apprehension in the tackling,” Wenger said. “It has been a long time out but he has been extremely strong mentally. I could never see one minute of doubt when he said ‘no I don’t want to do it’. “He was always wanting more. This guy is small but he has the mental strength of a mountain.” Eduardo’s double and goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Robin van Persie were just reward for a scintillating display that left Cardiff, last season’s FA Cup runners-up and serious contenders for promotion from the Championship, looking like a team of part-timers.

Usmanov ups Arsenal stake Red and White Holdings Limited, the company part-

owned by the Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, increased their shareholding in Arsenal to over 25 per cent. Red and White said the increase in their shareholding was “in line with Red and White’s previously stated intention to secure a significant shareholding in Arsenal and ensure that its position is protected”. Usmanov co-owns Red and White with Farhad Moshiri, a London-based investor. “We are pleased to have now secured over a quarter of the shares of Arsenal,” the statement went on. “We are committed long-term investors and supporters of the club and are comfortable that we are now in a protected position. “We also welcome the strengthening of the squad and look forward to a successful conclusion to the season.”

Masters invitation

Danai Udomchoke’s record in the Davis Cup is strong.

The Masters and the British Open, the two majors with the most global influence, announced Sunday a new Asian Amateur Championship. Augusta National chairman Billy Payne and Royal and Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson said their clubs will finance and operate the new tournament, to be played October 29 at Mission Hills in China. The winner will receive an invitation to the Masters and an exemption to the final stage of qualifying for the British Open. “Eighteen months ago we started an overall effort to see how we could use the good reputation of the Masters and our resources to help attract kids to the game of golf,” Payne said. “It became obvious fairly quickly that the place we could impact the most would be Asia,” he said. “We thought if we could identify good golfers and create heroes who would be emulated by other kids, in the process they would be attracted to the game.”

The 160th-ranked Danai will be joined by Thai No 2 Kittipong Wachiramanowong and No 3 Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana, a reserve player, as well as doubles experts Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana in the tie to be held from March 6 to 8. Former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt, currently ranked No 103, and No 129 Chris Guccione will play the singles for the visitors. With the home crowd backing the team and summer heat likely to affect the Aussies’ peformance, nonplaying captain Thanakorn Srichaphan is dreaming of revenge for the Australian’s 5-0 thrashing of Thailand in Townsville last year. “Danai always brings his best when representing the country while the twins have stepped up to another level. I don’t see why we can’t beat Australia,’’ said the former country’s No 1. Danai has a decent 28-14 singles record in Davis Cup singles. He lost a five-setter to Guccione last year.

FEEM READY TO ROAR AP Honda backs Ratthapark to fire ahead of Moto GP season By Kitinan Sanguansak DAILY XPRESS

P Honda, undeterred by gloomy economic conditions, showed its commitment to Thai motorsport by supporting Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot’s bid for Moto GP glory for the third successive year. Despite the downturn, the country’s leading motorbike seller on Monday signed a contract at Plaza Athenee Hotel to continue to back Ratthapark, who was the first Thai to compete a full season in the world championship. Zenjiro Sakurai, president of AP Honda, said that the support the company is giving to the 250cc Thai rider is part of its policy to give something back to the society. “We’ve an objective to help society. Our major aim is to

We’ve been doing this job for over 20 years with the aim of pushing a Thai rider onto the world stage. “Ratthapark, no doubt, is our main success story. He has enjoyed two good years on the circuit. He’s also raised Thai riders’ profile considerably on the international stage. We

hope he will have another great year this season,” said Sakurai. Having just completed testing in Jerez, Spain, the 21-yearold Ratthapark is looking to pick up where he left off last term when he notched up three straight top-ten finishes in the last three races. “We’re working on solving

my problem at the start. I think I should be ready come the start of the season. My form at the end of last year makes me confident about my prospects this time. I want to be among the top five,” said the Thai Honda PTT SAG rider. With Hector Faubel joining the team during the off season, Ratthapark, who followed up his 17th in the rankings in his debut season two years ago with a 13th position in his last campaign, confirmed he wasn’t worried about working alongside the Spanish rider, an old rival. “I’ve already met him. He’s quite a nice guy. Although it’s a bit weird right now to work with the man I fought for points with in the last campaign, it should be fine when racing gets underway. “Given his vast experience on the circuit, I think I can learn a lot from him,” said Ratthapark. The Moto GP’s new season will kick off with the Qatar Grand Prix on April 12.

he Provincial Electricity Authority’s preparations for the Asian Football Confederation Champions League qualifier against Armed Forces of Singapore today have been hit by venue trouble. The Thai Premier League champions’ game was originally due to take place at Thammasart University Rangsit Campus’s stadium. However, it failed to meet the standards and the venue has been shifted to Rajamangala National stadium. PEA are considering filing charges against the university for its failure to maintain the venue properly. “We inspected the stadium around a month ago and the field was in good shape. But, when the AFC officials came to check the stadium, they saw the pitch was not in a fit condition for play,” said Praphol Pongpanich, PEA’s manager. SERVING REVENGE

Former world No 1 Ana Ivanovic provided hints on and off the court at the Dubai Open as to why her new coach might just provide the boost she needs to get back to the top of the world rankings. The Serbian superstar teamed up with American Craig Kardon only last week – and her first match with his help produced an important revenge. She won 7-5 6-4 against Alisa Kleybanova, the aggressive Russian who caused a massive shock last month when she beat Ivanovic in the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. That was Ivanovic’s last match on the WTA Tour, but she took the opportunity to repair some of the damage at the first attempt, proving resilient when it mattered most. “I was looking for revenge but I felt nervous at the start,” Ivanovic admitted. “But I have been very aggressive and serving very well. That’s something I have been working on with Craig and I felt confident going on court.” Hence the importance of Kardon, who used to be coach to Martina Navratilova. “We have practised really well.”
