he new generation of Thais should know that they’re missing something – catch my new movie or any of my back catalogue and they’ll see what I mean. Horror films are big now but old TV series like “Chao Poh Shanghai” [“The Bund” – just out on DVD] were in a league of their own. If you want fastaction entertainment, I recommend Hong Kong TV series and movies of the ’80s.

Video clip reveals deaf Khon Kaen student was beaten up before hanging herself D A I LY X P R E S S

olice will interrogate a group of deaf students suspected of attacking a schoolmate who committed suicide last Friday. Amporn Phumphukhieo, 18, hanged herself in a toilet cubicle at the School for the Deaf in Khon Kaen. “We have found a video clip showing that her schoolmates beat her up,” Khon Kaen police chief Major Sujin Nijpanich said yesterday.

Sign-language interrogation He said sign-language translators would help in the interrogation. “All the attackers are students at the same school,” Sujin said. He added that, aside from the mark around her neck left by the rope, there were no physical wounds found on Amporn’s body at the time of her death. “But the beating could have prompted the decision to take her own life,” Sujin said. Amporn, a Grade-12 student, had been at the school since Grade 1. She was due to move on to a college in Udon Thani next month. Her teacher described her as a good student with a cheerful personality, adding that she had always helped with extracurricular activities. DAILY

SUICIDEby decapitation Bridge victim’s head torn off by ‘force of gravity’; missing Italian man likely victim D A I LY X P R E S S

D

eputy police commissioner-general Jongrak Chuthanont announced yesterday that the westerner whose head was found hanging from Rama VIII Bridge on Sunday committed suicide and was believed to be an Italian. Jongrak said Siriraj Hospital doctors had confirmed that the body discovered near the bridge on Monday belonged to the head. He said the uneven decapitation wound and bruises suggested death by hanging rather than beheading with a sharp object, adding that the man’s body showed no signs of assault. At 11am yesterday, forensic officials along with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Disaster Prevention and Mitiga-

tion officials went to inspect the scene one more time. They took photographs of the handwriting found on the bridge’s railing and descended by rope to take photographs of the blood traces and collect samples.

Blood-spray pattern It was confirmed that the blood-spray pattern found on cement foundations under the bridge resulted from the action of the arteries when the head was torn from the body by the force of gravity. Siriraj Hospital forensic doctors had told police that this sequence of events was “often typical of a suicide by hanging”. Though medical evidence shows that it was almost certainly a suicide and not a brutal

execution by international gangsters, Jongrak urged anyone with evidence that suggested murder to contact the police. The case will be registered as suicide in 30 days if no more evidence to the contrary is put forward, he said.

Italian arrived on Wed As for the ongoing attempts to identify the victim, Jongrak said he was wearing Italianmade Puma clothing, and the bag found near his head carried the name of an Italian hotel. Checks revealed that 49-yearold Italian Jaeta Jiovani entered Thailand on February 18 and checked in to the Rex Hotel in the Sukhumvit area before going missing at the weekend. It was reported that Jiovani had been to Thailand seven times. Police also showed reporters pictures taken of Jiovani arriving at the airport.

The Public Health Ministry has proposed a ban on the sale of alcohol to Thais over the Songkran Festival weekend of April 13-15, an official revealed yesterday. Saman Futrakul, director of the Public Heath Ministry's Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, said the ban on Thai buyers would not extend to foreigners, who would still be able to buy alcohol on Songkran.

Culture shuffle A Cabinet meeting yesterday approved a shuffle of culture and religious affairs officials, with Religious Affairs Department chief Preecha Kanthiya moved to an inactive post and Arak Sanghitkul assigned as Office of Contemporary Art and Culture chief. Arak’s predessor Apinan Poshyananda was appointed deputy permanent secretary for culture, while Preecha and another Apinan official, Prisana Pongtadsirikul, were to be made the ministry’s inspector-generals, said permanent secretary for culture Veera Rojanapojanarat. Deputy permanent secretary for culture Chaveerat Kasetsunthorn became National Culture Commission secretary-general, he said. Veera added that the transfers open the way for Arak to use contemporary art and culture to create income for Thailand.

en process beauty on the right side of their brains, while women use their whole brain to do the job. They even explain it differently. Novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Essayist David Hume: “Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” Researchers were surprised by the finding. “It is well known that there are differences between brain activity in women and men in

cognitive tasks,” said researcher Camilo J Cela-Conde of the University of Baleares in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. “However, why should this kind of difference appear in the case of appreciation of beauty?” The answer seems to be that when women consider a visual object they link it to language while men concentrate on the spatial aspects of the object, Cela-Conde said in an interview by e-mail. The researchers tested 10 men and 10 women, showing them paintings and photos of urban scenes and landscapes, asking them to rate each scene

as either “beautiful” or “not beautiful”. At the same time the scientists looked at images of the magnetic fields produced by electrical currents in the brains of the men and women. For the first 300 milliseconds, there was no difference between male and female brains, and from 300 to 700 milliseconds activity was greater for objects that were rated as beautiful than for those that were not beautiful. For both sexes the most active region was the parietal lobe that deals with visual perception, spatial orientation and information processing, but it was focused on the right side of the brain in men while both sides participated in women.

Mother sells baby to pay hospital bill A F P , Hyderabad

poverty-stricken single mother in India sold her newborn son to a childless couple for Rs6,000 (Bt4,200) so she could pay her medical bill. The 20-year-old woman, Rajitha, delivered the baby by Caesarean section last week in the town of Kothagudem, Andhra Pradesh, but could not afford the Rs2,000 hospital fee, the NDTV news channel reported.

Bought by richshaw driver A rickshaw driver friend gave her Rs6,000 for the baby, which he planned to raise with his wife. The couple have no children. Police interrogated the woman in the local hospital, 270 kilometres from the state capital Hyderabad, where she

told them her husband had abandoned her and she had no means to support herself and a baby. Police said they would take action against the hospital. “Buying and selling a baby is an offence, so we will be booking cases,” Kothagudem revenue division officer P Rajaram said. Welfare officials want the baby to be reunited with his mother so she can breastfeed him. They said the mother and child would then be shifted to a state-run facility where Rajitha can decide if she wants to put the baby up for adoption. The incident occurred in the parliamentary constituency of India’s minister of state for women and child development Renuka Chowdhury.

ince Washington intern Chandra Levy disappeared in 2001, one name had been familiar: Gary Condit, the former congressman who was questioned by authorities in her disappearance. But a man named Ingmar Guandique was never far away. The Salvadoran immigrant lived in an apartment near the park where Levy’s remains were found. He’s now serving time in federal prison for assaulting two female joggers there weeks after Levy disappeared. An arrest in the Levy case is imminent, and two people with knowledge of the case said that Guandique will be charged. Prosecutors describe Guandique as a violent predator with drug and alcohol problems and poor self-control. But there are still few answers for why it’s taken so long to make an arrest in a case that some say brought down a popular congressman and embarrassed District of Columbia police. Sheila Cruz, Guandique’s former landlady, said that around the time Levy disappeared, Guandique had scratches on his throat and a swollen lip. She said Guandique told her he’d been in a fight with ex-girlfriend Iris Portillo, but Portillo denied that she hit him.

he Hong Kong-Canadian pop star who took photos while having sex with a string of female celebrities told a court on Monday that he was shocked when the images were plastered across the Internet. Edison Chen, one of Asia’s biggest entertainment stars, gave evidence in the case of Sze Ho-Chun, a computer technician charged in Hong Kong with illegally posting the explicit photos online. The photos became an Internet sensation when they were posted last February, forcing Chen, 28, into early retirement and sending him fleeing to his childhood home of Canada. The pictures showed Chen in compromising positions with various celebrities, including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan. Chen told the unusual hearing in Vancouver that the photos were his, but that they had been stored on a personal laptop computer that had gone missing last year. He told the court he believed the release of the photos was due to “some foul play” by workers at a computer store he used in Hong Kong. “I’m quite a

Hong Kong’s Department of Justice flew a legal team, including Hong Kong’s chief magistrate, to Vancouver after Chen had refused to return to the southern Chinese city to give evidence. Despite his retirement, Chen’s fame has not faded. He was the most-searched personality late last year in Asia, according to Google.

Sacked for jaunt A Chinese Communist Party official has been sacked for leading a delegation on a jaunt to Egypt and Dubai, where the group splurged on diamonds and stayed at top hotels. An Internet blogger initially exposed Tan Rigui, the deputy party secretary of a district in Guangdong, by posting a video online showing some of his government-funded “work trip”. A government investigation then found that Tan led 13 officials from his Duanzhou district to Egypt on the two-week trip early in 2007, the China Daily said. Those who travelled with Tan included officials from a number of district government departments, who have all been asked to repay the costs of the trip that add up to 450,000 yuan (Bt2.3 million). – AFP

Porn fine A federal judge on Monday ordered a Briton convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography to pay about US$200,000 (Bt7.1 million) in restitution to a woman who was photographed being sexually abused when she was a child. Senior US district judge Warren W Eginton said his ruling was the first in a criminal case in which someone convicted of

possessing illegal images – but not creating them – is required to pay restitution. The case involves Alan Hesketh, a British citizen who was sentenced in October to 78 months in prison for possessing and distributing nearly 2,000 photographs of child pornography. Hesketh’s attorney Jonathan Einhorn said he would appeal the restitution order, calling it unreasonable and predicting it would lead to similar claims by other child pornography victims.

Priest charged A Florida priest charged with embezzling thousands of dollars from his church to fund a lavish lifestyle has been convicted of second-degree grand theft. Prosecutors accused the Rev Francis Guinan of stealing $488,000 (Bt17.4 million) from St Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Delray Beach to fund trips to the Bahamas and Las Vegas, jewellery and home furniture. A jury found that he stole more than $20,000 but less than $100,000. He had been charged with first-degree grand theft of more than $100,000. The 66-year-old priest faces up to 15 years in prison. His sentencing is on March 25. A conviction on the more severe charge carried up to 30 years in prison. – AP

fter five years of sending young dream-hunters on the road to fame and fortune through Thailand’s successful TV reality show “Academy Fantasia”, Kitikorn “Noom” Penrote has launched his own company, Have A Good Dream. “It’s essentially a TV production house and artist-management agency that scouts for talent, builds up new artists then gently introduces them to the entertainment business,” says the new company’s chief executive officer. Have A Good Dream is getting off the ground with two TV programmes, “The Gentleboy Institute”, a boot camp and variety show that will air on Channel 3, and “The Trainer”, a reality show that will go out on Modernine.

Different concepts “The two shows are very different,” says Kitikorn. “‘The Gentleboy Institute’ will be home to eight goodlooking boys with excellent dancing and singing skills,” says the producer. “They’ll be presented as a boy band like Dong Bang Shin Ki or Super Junior, not one by one as in reality shows ‘AF’ or ‘The Star’. “No one will be voted out over the 17 weeks. ore than 10,000 fans turned out last Saturday for Tiger Translate Music & Art Festival 2009, taking in the music shows and art exhibitions spread over the spacious area, which proved a much better venue for the event than RCA, the site for last year’s debut. The space was carefully zoned for this second festival too, with the result that visitors had no trouble finding the striking artwork by motion graphics contest winner Nopparat Asawasirayothin inside the fairy castle after passing through the entrance. Leaving the castle, we discovered the second set of artworks, the so-called “typo town” pieces, which included winner Kantasorn Puangkham’s street art, installed around the venue. Festival-goers had fun with one of the woodcuts, shaping words like “think”, “create”, “idea” and “success”. Further along, two groups of graffiti designers sprayed the same board to the accompaniment of Kai-Jo Brothers’ reggae beats while multimedia winner Rom Khampanya showcased his glass-inspired work to the sound of Slot Machine. nce upon a time the Porsche was a simply a superb sports car, but then the maker came out with the Cayenne SUV, and the world of premium autos started to change. People wanted a bigger, more versatile vehicle for the city that bore the same glittery name. Next in this line of evolution is the BMW X5, the second generation of the hot-selling X5, and it’s one of the best big SUVs I’ve driven. The best thing about it is it still feels like a BMW. SUVs come in types. There’s the soft, clumsy sort that totters around down like a drunken hippo, and there’s the hard, sharp and powerful

strutter, the lion on steroids. The X5 falls into the second category. It comes with a 3.0-litre diesel engine, which means it’s frugal – at least compared to other SUVs its size. It will average 11 to 13 kilometres per litre on the highway. Then there’s the “i-drive” menu that takes a good few hours to master but with which I’m now starting to get familiar. The gear lever looks like a control from the Starship Enterprise and is quite easy to use, so much so that having to use regular automatic gears can be aggravating. On the move, the X5 is a great drive. Corners are taken with ease, and the overall handling for a vehicle this

size and weight is impressive. Bumps and cracks in the pavement are ironed out, although it would nice if the car could handle the rigours of Bangkok roads even better. The diesel engine seems a little lethargic, mainly be-

cause of the two-tonne weight of the vehicle. The X5 costs Bt6.3 million, and if you’re not one for diesel you can consider the more expensive X5 4.8-litre petrol version for Bt9.4 million.

Mighty mite Nate Robinson stole the show in the Knick of time. Robinson exploded for a season-high 41 points, including a steal and the tie-breaking lay-up with 26 seconds left, carrying the New York Knicks to a 123-119 over the short-handed Indiana Pacers yesterday. The reigning Slam Dunk Champion hit 11-of-18 shots, including four three-pointers, and converted 15-of-19 free throw. – DPA

Fernando Torres, right, has never scored a goal at the Bernabeu, let alone won a game there. Inset: Real Madrid’s Arjen Robben is chased by Sergio Ramos during a training session yesterday.

Liverpool striker Torres returns to Real Madrid’s ground determined to break jinx DPA, Madrid

F

ernando Torres is returning to Spain, and is set to visit a scene that has held a “curse” for the striker throughout his career: Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Torres – who rose through the ranks of Atletico Madrid before joining Liverpool – is the main attraction as Liverpool visit Real in the Champions League tonight, in a clash with great symbolic content. The Bernabeu, in turn, is set to show its most hostile side to the former Atletico captain and current star of the so-called “Spanish Liverpool”, the team where he has grown to become one of Europe’s top strikers. Torres is keen to play down

the significance of a new visit to the home of Real, which has caused him so many headaches during his career. “The special game would have been against Atletico, playing Real Madrid is not special,” he told the latest edition of the British magazine FourFourTwo. However, the Spain forward will not be able to avoid the limelight so easily. Not just for his Atletico Madrid past or for being one of Liverpool’s superstars, but because of his particular, personal curse: he has never scored a goal at the Bernabeu, let alone win a game there. “I’m looking forward to it because it’s going back to Madrid, playing in a stadium where I’ve never won and against a great

team. And because we’re sure that we’re going to get through,” Torres noted. The striker, 24, left Atletico two years ago to start a new phase at Liverpool. It was a somewhat traumatic decision due to his long-time ties to the Madrid club and its history, but time proved him right. Torres not only conquered the hearts of Liverpool fans, but he also achieved the international recognition that he never got while an Atletico Madrid player. This year, he won the Bronze Ball award, as the third-best player in the world, behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. In the meantime, Real are looking for ways to stop him. Torres is set to face Pepe, one of the continent’s most solid defenders, in what may be billed in advance as a fantastic duel.

ON FERNANDO TORRES CAPABILITIES

ON REAL MADRID VS LIVERPOOL

“I think Fernando has been saving his goal for Wednesday night. It is hard for any team to score at the Bernabeu, but for me it is just a coincidence that Torres hasn’t yet scored there. Fernando is happy to score against any team – but it would be extra special for him to score in the Bernabeu because he grew up as an Atletico fan.”

“I want to beat Liverpool because I playing for Chelsea lost twice in the semi-finals. Liverpool are a strong team and have a manager that is good tactically. The most important thing is to score some goals at the Bernabeu.”

The Portugal centre-back admits he has studied his rival’s movements. “He is a great footballer, fast and very strong,” Pepe said. “He is one of Liverpool’s strongest points and I am looking forward to playing against him.” Liverpool were set to arrive in Spain later yesterday with many players who are in some way linked to Real. Coach Rafa Benitez, for one, was trained as a coach at Real Madrid, and he is being mentioned as a person to take the reins of the Spanish team next season. The situation is somewhat similar with midfielder Xabi Alonso. He was close to signing for Real four years ago, and is again being mentioned as a possible signing now. Defender Alvaro Arbeloa is returning to what he once called home. After rising through

Real’s youth ranks, he left in the face of a lack of chances to develop his play, and he is now doing well both at Liverpool and in the Spain jersey. In a case quite similar to Torres’, keeper Jose Manuel Reina holds a double grudge against Real Madrid: he is a selfdeclared Atletico Madrid fan, and back in 2001, when he played for Barcelona, he was attacked by a spectator at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid and Liverpool are set to clash in Europe’s top competition for the first time since the 1981 European Cup final, which the English side won 1-0. It’s been a long time, and football has changed a lot – so much so that Liverpool now travel to Madrid with many Spanish footballers in its ranks, several of them with pending issues.

side currently sitting in second place in Serie A. Ranieri’s departure from Chelsea, in 2004, was followed by an unsuccessful spell at Valencia. But he has since restored his reputation as a coach That work is sufficiently well advanced to suggest Juve represent a real threat to the fledgling Hiddink revival but Ranieri can nevertheless anticipate a warm reception on his return to west London. The Italian was kept on for Chelsea’s first season under the ownership of Roman Abramovich but, despite taking the club to the semi-finals of Champions League and securing second-spot behind unbeaten Arsenal in the Premier League, was pushed out to make way for Mourinho. He can justifiably boast however of having forged the core of the Portuguese’s title-winning side having made John Terry captain as well as being responsible for bringing Lampard, Petr Cech, Joe Cole and (the now departed) William Gallas to the club. “I didn’t win anything but the crowd knew very well that I built a good team,” Ranieri reflected recently. “Did I get enough credit? No. I wanted to finish my job but it was impossible.”

f the pronouncements emanating from Stamford Bridge this week are to be believed, Guus Hiddink walked through the door and suddenly all was harmony and common purpose once more at Chelsea. From the carefully choreographed group hug at the end of Saturday’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa – Hiddink’s first match in charge – to Frank Lampard’s claim that the “old” Chelsea spirit was back, no effort has been spared in an attempt to bolster faith in the Dutchman’s ability to transform the fortunes of a group of players who had lost their way, individually and collectively, under Luiz Felipe Scolari. Hiddink’s record as a motivator speaks for itself. But even the man who guided South Korea to the last four of the World Cup must harbour some doubts about his ability to squeeze more silverware out of Chelsea’s current crop of players. Chelsea’s peak years – and the club’s two Premier League titles – coincided with Jose Mourinho’s time in charge. But Blues fans also recognise the importance of the foundations put in place by Mourinho’s predecessor, Claudio Ranieri, who will be back at the Bridge tonight, is at the helm of a Juventus

late goal from England defender Jonathan Woodgate gave Spurs what could be a crucial three points in the fight against relegation as they beat fellow Premiership strugglers Hull 2-1 on Monday. Woodgate’s header – in what was his 50th appearance for the London club – four minutes from time gave Spurs only their second win in their last 10 Premier League matches and first away win since beating West Ham on December 8 last year. For Hull relegation appears to be a real possibility as they have registered just one victory in their last 17 Premier League Games. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said he believed that his side had deserved the victory but bemoaned the fact that ahead of him and the club this week lies a Uefa Cup second leg clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, who beat them 2-0 in last week’s first leg, on Thursday and then their defence of the League Cup against Manchester United on Sunday. “We’ve got to play on Monday and Thursday and we’ve got a Cup final on Sunday. It’s ludicrous,” said Redknapp. “We are trying to figure a team out for Thursday.”

MASTERS STRATEGY Thai star Prayad arrives in the United States aiming for a place in the Masters AGENCIES

hai standout Prayad Marksaeng wants to be at full throttle when he embarks on an American odyssey this week which he hopes will lead him all the way to the US Masters in April. The talented Asian Tour star today becomes the first Thai to compete in the elite 64-man WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at the RitzCarlton Golf Club in Marana, Arizona, and he hopes to pull off some surprises, starting with his first-round match against England’s Lee Westwood. Currently ranked 53rd in the world, Prayad knows he has every opportunity to break into the top-50 which would earn him a second appearance at the Masters, the year’s first Major. Prayad has two chances to achieve his goal as he will remain in the US for the WGCCA Championship next month. The WGC events offer a lucrative US$8 million in total prize money. “I am the first Thai player to compete in the Match Play and I’m proud of that achievement. It will inspire me to play well,” said the 43-year-old veteran, who won three times in Japan last year. Prayad enjoys competing in match-play competitions, especially after he won all three matches in Asia’s victory over

Prayad Marksaeng becomes the first Thai to compete in the World Match Play tournament today. Europe in the Royal Trophy, a Ryder Cup-style event, in Bangkok last month. “I had a great outing at the Royal Trophy which gave me a good boost. I hope to carry that experience into the WGC events. I’m enjoying some good form – and hoping it continues. “I love match-play events. I enjoy taking risks and competing in close matches. I find match-play formats very exciting. There are no second chances and that keeps me on the ball,” said the Thai, a sixtime winner on the Asian Tour. After the Match Play, Prayad

will head to Doral Golf Resort and Spa for the CA Championship from March 1215. “I will strive hard at both events. I have two chances to move up the rankings. I hope to produce two good results.” In preparation for his trip, he sought advice from countrymen Prom Meesawat and Chapchai Nirat, who have both competed at Doral. He liked what he heard. “They told me that the greens are similar to those in Thailand, so I think I’ll be comfortable,” he said. Prayad was invited to the Masters last year but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Days after becoming the youngest winner of a European Tour or Australasian Tour event, 18-year-old amateur Danny Lee has decided to change his swing. The South Koreanborn New Zealand golfer closed with consecutive birdies to win the Johnnie Walker Classic by a stroke on Sunday, forgoing the prize money but moving from No 562 to No 159 in the world rankings and earning a three-year exemption on the European, Asian and Australasian Tours. It was a conversation with Butch Harmontrained Won Joon Lee during the Johnnie Walker that encouraged Lee to alter his swing. “I didn’t really like the follow-through of my swing so I asked him a couple of questions and he taught me some good tips, so I’m working on that at the moment,” Lee said. “He is coached by Butch Harmon and I really like his swing – like Adam Scott. I really like their style of swing so I asked him a few questions.” Lee plans to turn pro after the US Masters – he gets to play at Augusta as the reigning US Amateur champion. For now, he’s back at practice preparing for the Moonah Classic, which is jointly sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour and the Australasian PGA and starts tomorrow at the 7,421-yard Moonah Links course. Suzann Pettersen won with an eagle last year.

eigning champion Suzann Pettersen of Norway returned to the Siam Country Club Pattaya Plantation with some sweet memories. Sixteen months ago it was at this 6,477-yard par-72 layout that she overcame the challenge of veteran Laura Davies to claim the title. Both were tied at 19-under coming into the final hole before Pettersen

delivered a superb 15-foot eagle putt to close the deal. “Those are memories for life – going head-to-head with Laura,” said the world No 4, who posted 10 top-10 finishes last season. “Laura played fantastic. It feels great to think back; I’ve seen some pictures of it since then.’’ The 26-year-old has been in town since Saturday, trying to learn the course for the US$1.45

Million Honda LPGA Thailand and acclimatise to the scorching heat of the beach city. “The course is a good set up. The fairways are soft, the greens are hard, so that will be a challenging part. It’s fairly open off the tee. Other than that, I think the key will be to get soft approaches into the greens [because they are so hard].’’ Despite being the defending

champion Pettersen denies she is feeling the weight of pressure on her shoulders. “It’s a great field we have here. We have pretty much all the top players. I think there are other players who should feel more pressure than I. Even though it’s been 18 months, I still feel like a an underdog,’’ said the Norwegian, who will tee off on Thursday as one of the favourites.

BANGKOK

THESPORT Australia’s Brendon Jones felt chills up his spine when he heard of Tiger Woods’ decision to make his return to golf at this week’s Accenture Match Play Championship. Jones, the last man to qualify for the 64-man field, was home with his family when he heard the news. He knew the No 64 seed plays the No 1 seed in the opening round, and he knew who was No 1. “I got a few chills up the back of my neck,” Jones said. The trick will be getting them to go away when he meets Woods on the first tee of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain today. He was quite the celebrity on Monday. He was stopped twice for pictures with fans as he walked off the 18th green. When he stepped into the media centre, he found 30 reporters staring at him, along with eight television cameras at the back of the room. Jones is curious, like everyone else, about how Woods will perform in his first tournament since winning the US Open on one good leg. Wood had seasonending surgery a week later to reconstruct the ligaments in his left knee. Jones is being realistic about his opening match. “If I get beat by anybody, I would like to get beat by Tiger.”
