New ratings, same old censorship By Lt-Colonel Wanchana Sawatdee Actor

’m making a stand against the new film act as I disagree with a law that combines a rating system and censorship. We should have the same movie rating as other countries. I think that film-makers should have their freedom of expression protected. The government must ask whether they want [movies] to show what they prefer us to see, or to reveal the truth. Movies shouldn’t take the sole blame for a deteriorating society – there are other factors that contribute. We should face reality rather than play the blame game.

fter battling a severe, painful disease for about 17 years, Saowanee Rittichot, better known as ‘Nong Aom’, passed away at the age of 26 yesterday. Nong Aom, who was suffering from ichthyosis, had provided moral support and awakened the fighting spirit in lots of hopeless people across Thailand. She died of lung cancer and complications at Bangkok’s Saint Louis Hospital. Her life was presented on Channel 5’s Joh Jai (Straight to the Heart) programme about six years ago and Modernine’s Khon Khon Khon reality show in 2005. Her lively bearing and optimism inspired many. Nong Aom suffered from the disease since she was nine. The genetic skin disorder started as a small wound on the corner of her mouth, but later the wound spread to almost every part of her skin. She was admitted to hospital on January 31 because of chronic wounds on her right arm. The arm was amputated to save her life, but doctors discovered she had lung cancer, too. Ichthyosis is dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin. The skin is said to resemble fish scales. It pained Nong Aom so much that she had to get her relatives to slough off her skin. DAILY

angkok: Venice of the East? Yes, it might become a reality in the near future. The Senate, the Crown Property Bureau (CPB) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) are continuing in their quest to reshape the heart of Rattanakosin Island in Dusit as well as charming communities along the Chao Phya River into nouveau Siam. Aiming to update the studies presented by SJA+3D, there will be a seminar on “The Vision on Preservation of Rattanakosin and its Island” at the BCP office this Saturday

from 8.30am to 4pm. The seminar is targeting about 100 delegates, including representatives from the Senate, the CPB, TAT, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (ONESDB), the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, the Association of Siam Architects, communities affected and the media.

Multi-billion-baht plan The seminar will reveal new studies on the multi-billionbaht masterplan, which will affect dozens of communities

The Senate, the Crown Property Bureau and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are pursuing an ambitious plan to reshape the heart of Rattanakosin Island and turn Rajdamnoen Avenue into the ‘Champs Elysees of Bangkok’ along the Chao Phya in Tha Tien, Tha Chang and Tha Phrachan as well as Wat Rakang in Bangkok Noi district. Chaired by Senate chairman Prasobsuk Boondech, the panellists include Uthit Chaithen of ONESDB, Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, national artist Sumet Jumsai and Veeraphan Shinawatra, both of SJA+3D. Veeraphan will present an updated study called “Chao Phya Sodsai Thoed Thai Ong Raja”, a project to preserve the area along the river from Tatien near Wat Pho and the parallel area along the river in Thonburi.

The CPB, the landlord of the Tha Tien community, will team up with TAT to develop Tha Tien into a “living culture community” following the global trend of cultural tourism. The new study will continue to develop the ancient Tatien community by replacing the old fresh market with a public park and modern tourist spots, from which the popular Wat Arun can be seen on Thonburi’s riverbank. Uthit will present an update on the controversial project of “Converting Rajdamnoen Avenue into the Champs Elysees of Bangkok”.

SAVING THE PAY-OUT The government is trying to tackle the economic recession by introducing a number of measures, one being to hand out Bt2,000 gift cheques to low-income earners and encourage them to shop. But most eligible people who spoke to Wannapa Phetdee of Daily Xpress don’t see it that way. They say they prefer to hold on to the money.

Somchai Muagthong, 36 Security guard

Sitthichai Sitthipokha, 46 Assistant village head

I plan to keep the Bt2,000 to pay for my children’s education for the next semester. Although the government has promised to provide free 15-year compulsory education, I’m not sure if it will do so. We don’t know for how long this policy will be in effect because it may be discarded when the present government is out of power. Therefore, I have to spare money for my children’s schooling. Despite special promotions by shopping malls, amusement parks or hotels for people with these cheques, I won’t spend the money on shopping.

I will keep this money in my savings account. I’m not affected much by the economic downturn. Normally, I save every month as I get income from several jobs. I work as a security guard and a messenger and am in charge of opening a construction company’s offices. I am a person who won’t spend that amount of money because I’m not sure whether the special promotions are worth the cost of transport to and from the shopping mall. I believe many people will feel the same way I do.

Jiangkham Yaikhampom, 48 Cleaner Phawattamon Jirawatchainan, 30 Company employee I intend to save the Bt2,000. It will help ease my expenditure burden. I’m not interested in any special promotion offered by shopping malls as I don’t have plans to buy clothes or other items. Most of my friends told me they, too, would keep this money.

Right after receiving the Bt2,000 from the government, I will transfer it to my niece up-country for her educational expenses. I usually give her Bt1,000-Bt1,500 per month. It will help ease my burden in providing money for my niece, and she will get more money than I’ve sent her each month in the past. Giving her this extra money is more useful than buying things for myself. She will have more money to buy necessary items, such as stationery.

Chomphunuch Phakdeephongsa, 47 Cleaner Bt2,000 is somewhat too little for me. It would be better if I got Bt3,000. Anyway, it’s useful and I will spend it on consumer goods. If shopping malls offer me interesting discounts on clothes, I will buy some. But if the prices are still too expensive for me, I won’t. I will check the prices first. However, offering promotions will help disadvantaged people up-country, where there are no shopping malls and drug stores taking part in the project. As there are many people affected by the recession – the unemployed and others working in rural areas – it would be better to give all of us Bt1,000 extra.

>> There are 9.4 million workers eligible for the Bt2,000 cheques nationwide. The cheques will be handed out from April 8.

Sarah Reinfelder’s two healthy babies were delivered seven weeks premature by Caesarean section at Marquette General Hospital in the Upper Peninsula. The 21-year-old woman has a condition known as uterus didelphys, and doctors say such twin births are rare. The uteri are different sizes, with the larger twin born from the larger uterus.

Banker turns ‘thief’

Stem-cell breakthrough goes one step further Pioneering work by Japanese stem-cell researchers two years ago has taken a major step forward, helping the quest for versatile, grow-in-a-dish transplant tissue. Two teams have combined ideas to devise a safer technique for reprogramming skin cells so that they become “pluripotent” stem cells – fundamental cells that then grow into specialised organs. The downside of the earlier technique was that the genes were delivered by a “Trojan horse” virus, but they couldn’t be given to patients without boosting the risk of cancer. In the new studies, two squads of researchers from Britain and Canada recount a method by which the four genes are delivered into the cell without using a virus – and then are removed after the reprogramming is done. CHEUNG LASHES OUT OVER SEX PHOTOS Says she’s still reeling from ordeal and that actor Chen ‘has never apologised’ A F P , Hong Kong

A

Hong Kong actress at the centre of an Internet sex photo scandal has broken her silence about the incident, lashing out at the pop star who took the compromising pictures. Cecilia Cheung, one of several local celebrities shown in the photos with Hong KongCanadian actor and singer Edison Chen, said he had never apologised, and that she was still reeling from the ordeal a year later. “He has never apologised to us personally,” Cheung told iCable in an interview, according to a report in the South China Morning Post.

“He should at least have called us to say sorry if he genuinely admitted his mistake.” Cheung She added: “The photos are still circulating online. How can we live a healthy and happy life? How can we put ourselves back on our feet?” The photos – showing Chen in compromising positions with various celebrities including Cheung, Canto-pop star Gillian Chung and former actress Bobo Chan – became an Internet sensation when they were posted a year ago.

Cheung said she decided to break her silence after Chen gave evidence last week in a Canadian court in the case of Sze Ho-Chun, a computer technician charged in Hong Kong with illegally posting the explicit photos online. The 28-year-old Chen for the first time identified Cheung, Chung and Chan in the Vancouver court as some of the women in the photos, but said later outside court he wanted to “protect” them and that they had “suffered enough”, the Post reported. Cheung, also 28, angrily retorted: “You should not have come out [now]... saying one thing but doing another in a bid to win the public’s forgiveness whilst hurting us.” The scandal had forced Chen into early retirement.

Police recovered millions in stolen cash and interrogated seven suspected robbers after a gang took a bank employee’s family hostage and forced him to rob his own branch. On Friday, six armed, masked men stormed into the rural home of Bank of Ireland worker Shane Travers. They tied up his partner, her fiveyear-old son and her mother, and told Travers they would be killed unless he cooperated. Travers took out ¤7 million (Bt325 million) from his branch later that morning. The theives took the money – the biggest in Ireland’s history – and drove off with his family. They abandoned the family inside a van north of Dublin. But shortly before midnight police raided a house in the Dublin district of Phibsborough and nabbed five men and a woman.

Dangerous drive Police in Ohio say a woman has been charged with child endangerment after another motorist reported she was both breast-feeding a youngster and talking on a phone while driving. Officer Michael Burke said the woman told police she couldn’t let her child go hungry. – AP

After taking a shot to the lip, Dwyane Wade gave the New York Knicks a shot to the gut. A bloodied Wade scored 24 of his 46 points in a spectacular fourth quarter as the host Miami Heat rallied from a 16-point deficit for a 120-115 victory over the defenceless Knicks. “It was one of our best wins of the year,” Wade said. “A punch in the stomach,” said Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni. – DPA

orena Ochoa underlined her supremacy as the world No 1 as she came from three strokes behind to win the US$1.45 Honda LPGA Thailand under tailor-made conditions at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Plantation. The Mexican, playing her first tournament of the season, trailed overnight leader Paula Creamer by three shots but stormed to a six-under-par 66 for 14-under-par 274 to capture her 25th career title. “My goal was to win the tournament and here I am with the trophy. I’m pleased. I played exceptionally well,” said Ochoa, who played alongside Creamer in the final group, which at-

tracted some 2,000 fans. “This is a good preparation for next week [in Singapore] as the course is pretty much the same. I will take rest and will be ready to defend my title on Thursday,” added Ochoa who was US$217,500 richer after her latest triumph. A record 16,500 fans showed up at the venue due to the star studded field and the overcast conditions. South Korean Park Hee Young, who suffered a devastating 79 on the first day but rebounded in the next rounds, finished lone second with a total of 11-under-par 277. “I felt sick on the first day. I had to be vaccinated at the hospital and after that I got better

and better in the next three rounds,” said Park, whose second finish here was her best result on the LPGA. She hit a bogey free round of 65 with an eagle on the fourth hole on Sunday. After three highly humid and sunny days, the sky was blanketed with clouds yesterday, which proved to be a bad sign for Creamer. The world No 3, who held a three shots lead, stumbled to two straight bogeys on the second and third holes and never recovered. “I didn’t have any rhythm and started on the wrong foot. It wasn’t my day. Lorena played awesome. It would have been difficult for me if I had played better anyway,” said the crowd darling who despite her disappointing performance still spent more than 30 minutes signing autographs for hun-

ON TEAM’S INABILITY TO SCORE

WALES RUGBY CAPTAIN

“Our goal-scoring record has dried out over more than just five games. There are plenty of reasons and one of them is certainly psychological. But overall it’s hard to assess what is tactical, what is technical and what is psychological. I don’t think it’s about us only trying to score the perfect goal – the perfect goal is only when the ball touches the net.”

“We have to get over this quickly. We will review the game like we do in victory. It’s not going to be pretty viewing, and it will be tough for some individuals, me included, but that’s Test-match rugby. There is no hiding place.”

dreds of fans. American-Thai Stacy Prammanasudh, after three disappointing rounds, saved the best for last as she fired an unbelievable nine-under-par 63 to set up a course record. She signed off with sev-

Wentworth, when he never trailed over the final 71 holes of that event. Ogilvy will be trying to win a World Golf Championship for the third time in his career, the most of any player besides Woods, who has won 15 of them. For Casey, it would be his first professional victory in a US PGA Tour-sanctioned event. The only time they have faced each other in match play – except for games at their home club in Scottsdale – was two years ago, when Ogilvy scored a 5-and-4 victory in the quarterfinals. The former US Open champion appears to be hitting his stride. “That’s the best I played all week by a long way today,” Ogilvy said. He had to be sharp against both of his opponents on a warm day in the high desert. McIlroy, the 19-year-old from Northern Ireland, kept on Ogilvy’s heels the whole match. Ogilvy birdied his last three holes and won only one of them in a 2-and-1 victory. “He’s the real deal,” Ogilvy said of a teenager who will rise to No. 15 in the world next week. “This will be the worst ranking he’s got for the next 10 years. It’s only going to go up, because he’s very impressive.” Equally difficult was Cink, who became only the fourth player to reach the semi-finals in consecutive years.

Briny Baird shot a 3-under to get within a stroke, putting him in final group with Wilson and Van Pelt at the 6,923-yard, par-70 El Camaleon course designed by Greg Norman.

It’s just one of those days that you putt the ball and they all go in. I am really pleased,” said the world No 46 who achieved her career lowest of 63 for the second time after the 2007 Fields Open in Hawaii. Local amateur Moriya Jutanugarn stumbled to an opening triple bogey but recovered to hit a 73 and a total of two-over-par 290 for a joint 28th. “I’m pleased with the result. I was here to gain experience and learn techniques like chipping and putting like a pro,” said the 14-year-old who finished 23 places higher than her younger sister Ariya, who ended up 51st in 2007.

eoff Ogilvy reached the final of the Accenture Match Play Championship for the third time in four years on Saturday, and he’ll face Paul Casey. Ogilvy made five birdies on the back nine to outlast teenage sensation Rory McIlroy in the quarter-finals, then played his final four holes in 5-under par against Stewart Cink for a 4-and-2 victory. Meanwhile, Casey has turned in the most dominating performance in the 11year history of this tournament. In an all-England semifinal, Casey defeated Ross Fisher 2 and 1, and will have a chance to become the first Match Play champion to never trail in any match in the entire week. Even more astounding was that Casey has led 79 of the 80 holes he has played. A tournament that no longer has Tiger Woods instead has the best two golfers in match play over the last three years. Ogilvy was 17-2 in match play dating to his 2006 victory at the Accenture Match Play Championship. That includes a singles victory in the Presidents Cup. Casey has won 16 of 20 outings in match play around the world, including his 2006 victory at the HSBC World Match Play Championship at

iverpool manager Rafael Benitez admits his side’s Premier League title hopes are fading after a shock 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Benitez concedes the title is now Manchester United’s to lose thanks to Saturday’s meltdown at the Riverside Stadium. Benitez knows Sir Alex Ferguson’s leaders are strong favourites to retain their title and he said: “It depends on Manchester United. Will they slip up? Maybe, I don’t know. The ball’s in their court now. “We will have to make sure we beat Sunderland in our next game now. Before this game winning the title was a difficult task, clearly now it’s even more difficult.” Benitez refused to blame the continued speculation about his long-term future for this latest damaging setback. With his new contract yet to be signed, he added: “My advisers are in talks with the advisers of the owners. Maybe they will have a conversation and we’ll see if we can progress.” The Spaniard also would not use Liverpool’s tough 1-0 midweek Champions League victory at Real Madrid as an excuse for a below-par display which saw his side badly run out of steam after the opening half hour. He added: “We had some problems with injuries and

Chelsea ready Guus Hiddink insists Chelsea are ready to step up the pressure on Manchester United in the Premier League title race after claiming a third successive victory under the Dutch manager. “I’m rather realistic, that’s to say we have to first win our

games, and hopefully a little bit more comfortably than we did here,” Hiddink said. “And then we have to ask goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar if he likes to have this ball in the back of his net. And I know him very well so I don’t think he’s willing to do so. “So that means a stable team like Manchester United, let’s face the facts, are in a good seat. “But as long as we have the possibility, as long as it’s not decided, we will keep going and that is what we have proven last week at Villa Park and here. “As long as the team is keeping up this fighting spirit we keep on going for the things that can be reached at the end.”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand insists Jose Mourinho has what it takes to succeed Alex Ferguson as the Red Devils’ manager. England centre-half Ferdinand reckons the Portuguese coach has the credentials to follow in 67-year-old Ferguson’s footsteps.“There are very few people who could take over,” Ferdinand told GQ magazine. “If you’re talking about someone with the ego and personality to do it, then Jose Mourinho is the name that jumps out at you.” However, United legend Bobby Charlton does not believe Mourinho would be able to build on Ferguson’s legacy. “I would hate for anyone to take this the wrong way but I don’t see him here,” the World Cup winner told The Mail on Sunday newspaper. “He’s got a talent but maybe if he ever came here the philosophy of youth football might never be the same again.” Ferdinand gave an insight into the kind of personality required for the job as he detailed Ferguson’s notorious “hairdryer” treatment – giving players a full-on verbal roasting. “It’s not pretty, it’s unbelievable,” he said. “If you talk back to him, he just keeps going louder and louder until you shut up. Everyone’s heads are on the floor, trying not to catch his eye.” – A F P

eal Madrid reduced the gap on bitter rivals Barcelona at the top of the Spanish League table to four points on Saturday when substitute Guti and veteran skipper Raul scored in a 2-0 win at Espanyol. Espanyol, who had defeated Barcelona last weekend, were in charge at the Olympic Stadium through Ivan de la Pena’s promptings in midfield, but

their inability to create clearcut chances was to prove crucial. An impressive run from De la Pena from the midfield and a strike from Nene, which went close, were all that Espanyol had to show for their possession in the first half. Real soaked up the pressure before Guti put them ahead from a free-kick conceded after a rare attack in the 67th minute. He curled a left-footed shot

from 30 yards into the top corner and five minutes later Raul slotted home to give Real the three points and extend their winning run to ten matches. Real coach Juande Ramos singled out Guti for special praise. “We knew that the game was not going to be easy but we were very motivated,” said Ramos whose team had been stunned by a home midweek Champions League defeat to

Liverpool. “There was little difference between the teams in the first half but after the break Guti changed the match and after his goal Espanyol had to take risks which led to the second goal.” Espanyol coach Maurico Pochettino felt his side deserved more.“We tried to play football and we had chances to score but the game changed with the free-kick.”

raeme Swann has admitted that Ramnaresh Sarwan has become a thorn in England’s side after the West Indies batsman struck his third hundred of their Test series on Saturday. Sarwan’s marathon, undefeated 184 followed scores of 107, 94, and 106 in his three previous innings in the series, and has enhanced West Indies’ chances of saving the fourth Test at Kensington Oval. Sarwan’s 14th Test hundred carried West Indies to 398 for five, replying to England’s first innings total of 600 for six declared, at the close on the third day – leaving the home team three runs short of avoiding the follow-on. “He has been a pain in the backside for us in the series so far,” Swann said. “We need to come up with a method for dis-

He has been good enough to get a hundred and get out in the previous three knocks, but [on Saturday], he carried on after he got the milestone and he has been hard to get out. “He must be due a low score at some stage, so let’s hope it is in the second innings of this Test.” This may be wishful thinking on Swann’s part because Sarwan believes that West Indies have not yet reached the threshold of safety. “I do not think we have reached safe waters just yet,” he said. “There is still a lot of time to go. There is two days left in the match.” Sarwan shared four significant partnerships that boosted the West Indies. reland captain Brian O’Driscoll downplayed all talk of a Six Nations Grand Slam despite seeing his side go one step closer with a 14-13 victory over England here at Croke Park. Saturday’s success left Ireland as the only team in this year’s tournament with a played three, won three record. Now victories away to Scotland and Wales, whose hopes of back-to-back clean sweeps disappeared against France in Paris on Friday, would see Ireland end their 61-yearwait for the Grand Slam. But the focus of O’Driscoll, man-of-the-match against England after scoring Ireland’s only try having previously landed a 30-metre drop-goal, was firmly fixed on Scotland, who

England manager Martin Johnson said his struggling side needed to make a “massive improvement” when they face France in a fortnight’s time after a 14-13 Six Nations loss to Ireland. “We’ve got 15 days before we play France and we need to improve our rugby side and our discipline side needs to be massively improved.” Johnson has repeatedly stressed the need for improved discipline but his words appear to be having little effect. “I said to the players, you cost yourselves the game. If you give away 18 penalties you are going to lose,” Johnson said.

the same respect we gave France, Italy and England,” he added ahead of the March 14 match in Edinburgh. Defeat away to Scotland in 2001 ultimately cost Ireland what would have been only the

second Slam in their history and O’Driscoll said: “Murrayfield is a tough place to go – I know that from experience. “Any side can beat any other in this tournament. That’s what makes it so hard to win.” After Ireland went 14-6 up late on it seemed as if they’d all but won a hard-fought encounter. But when England full-back Delon Armitage scored a converted try with barely a minute left on the clock there was a chance Ireland could have found themselves rueing flyhalf Ronan O’Gara’s four missed goalkicks from six attempts. “The ending was a little nerve-wracking,” O’Driscoll admitted. “We made it harder for ourselves than we needed to.”

I would like to thank my fans, especially the people in Bali as they have been nice. It’s my first time in Bali and I’ve been enjoying myself. I’m very happy to win here,” said the two-time Asian Tour No 1. It marked a memorable week for Thongchai who emerged as the first player to win 11 titles on the Asian Tour. “It was very hot and my face is sunburned. I’ve never seen my face like this before. I’m used to playing under the heat back home but this week it was extremely hot. The greens here are also very different and I have to read it well to keep the scores low. But this is a great win for me and I would like to dedicate this to my family,” added the champion.
