GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!
‘No Politics’ = no democracy By Vitsarach “Tae” Sukwatthanasiri Singer
I
remember seeing a “No Politics” sign at a restaurant and agreeing with the idea – if we keep on arguing we will only make our country worse. But then someone I know told me: “Imagine you had a firm running in the red. Do you want to investigate why the company is losing money and in trouble, or just let the company run further into debt? Arguing is part of our duty.” That comment changed my mind. Now I tend to think that everyone is just doing his own duty in arguing for what he thinks is right. So I want to give my morale support to every party.

he Cabinet yesterday approved in principle an executive decree to operate the National Film Archive of Thailand (NFAT) independently as a public organisation. Currently supervised by the Fine Arts Department, under the new structure the NFAT would eventually be operated independently. A Bt29-million budget was also approved yesterday to fund the archive’s operation in the first six months. The NFAT’s key roles will remain the same – acting as the official custodian of all Thai films and public documentaries.
Old reels stay put Of the estimated 200,000 films in NFAT custody, some 500 historic reels dating back to the reign of King Rama VII will be moved to the National Archives of Thailand, which is still under the Fine Arts Department’s supervision, said deputy director-general Prarop Laowanich. All NFAT employees would be given the choice of serving under the new structure or remaining with the department. An 11-member board of experts will be set up to oversee the NFAT’s new operations and budget. The Culture Ministry will oversee the transfer of budget and personnel. DAILY

Tighten your bellies! Weight-related illness is costing Thailand Bt4.2 billion per year, but plans to slim that figure are underway By Pongphon Sarnsamak

hronic illness caused by weight problems knocked Bt4.2 billion of Thailand’s Gross National Product (GNP) in 2006, a figure that will increase 13 fold in the next six years if nothing is done to tackle the issue, the Public Health Ministry revealed yesterday. Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai and Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam yesterday signed the “Changwat Raipoong Mungsu Sukhaparb Dee” (“Healthy and Slim Provinces”) plan for provincial and local authorities to lead communities in health-promotion activities.
Waistlines of more than 90cm for men and 80cm for women are deemed unhealthy. A survey of senior state officials’ waistlines in all provinces in 2008 found these ten provinces had the most big-belly officials: 1. Chaiyaphum: 81.16% 2. Prachuap Khiri Khan: 60% 3. Mae Hong Son: 57.45% 4. Phetchabun: 55.46% 5. Nakhon Ratchasima: 53.7% 6. Chon Buri: 52.44% 7. Utaradit: 50.51% 8. Lop Buri: 49.12% 9. Nonthaburi: 46.7% 10. Surat Thani: 46.7% Source: The Health Department
Two million in hospital Witthaya said that some two million hospital patients were being treated for chronic illnesses caused by being overweight, among them diabetes and heart disease. About half of them suffered high blood pressure and some 200,000 patients in this group had developed complications such as renal failure, paralysis and heart disease. The rise in such illnesses is draining the country’s economic output, he added, with the estimated Bt4.2 billion lost to heart disease, paralysis and diabetes in 2006 set to rocket to Bt52.15 billion in 2015 if nothing is done. The good news is that imple-

to the second. The province with the highest score in each region will get Bt20,000.
Beating diabetes is easy Belly-free means big prizes Focusing on a good diet, exercise and the control of stress, provincial health offices will attempt to become model belly-free organisations while local authorities will lead activities from this month to August with the aim of creating a belly-free community. The slimming champions will receive Bt100,000 in cash, with Bt80,000 going to the first runner-up and Bt50,000
Health Department chief Dr Narongsak Unkasuwapala said that participants in the department’s 2007 “Khonthai Raipoong” (“Fat-Belly-Free Thais”) project lost an average of nine kilograms in bodyweight and nine inches from their waistlines in four months. Citing an American study this year, he added that if overweight people cut their weight by seven per cent, they cut their risk of diabetes by 58 per cent.

Facebook omputer security specialists warn that Facebook users have been hit with a series of data-stealing attacks in the past week as cyber crooks increasingly stalk social-networking websites. Facebook has become prime hunting ground for tricksters and malicious software spreaders because it is the leading social-networking community, with more than 175 million people sharing personal information. “There are so many people on social-networking sites it is becoming profitable for bad guys to go there,” said David Perry, global director of education at software security firm Trend Micro. Even seemingly innocent information posted on profile pages can sometimes provide opportunities for criminals.

Stealing info If people follow instructions in the bogus messages, software is installed on their computers that steals information and sends similar bogus messages to their friends on the site. The most recent Facebook attack came in the form of messages claiming to be from friends that wanted to share digital video of the receivers. Clicking on the link results in a prompt to download viewing software that is actually a computer worm called Koobface. “It steals your cookie on your desktop; not just for Facebook but for a half-dozen social networking websites including MySpace,” said Trend Micro research manager Jamz Yaneza.

Lizards use transvestite trickery Young male lizards in South Africa imitate females to fool aggressive older males into leaving them alone, in an example of transvestism in the natural world, researchers have found. The lizards not only avoid fights but gain access to females under the nose of their more macho rivals, the South African and Australian researchers discovered. They found that young male Augrabies flat lizards delayed displaying the extravagant colouration of sexually mature males until they were able to defend themselves adequately. “Experienced males will chase and bite their young rivals,” said associate professor Martin Whiting of Johannesburg’s University of Witwatersrand. “By delaying the onset of colour to a more convenient period, these males, termed she-males, are making the best of a bad situation.” But, as with large hands and an Adam’s apple in the human world, there is a flaw in the lizards’ transvestite transformation. Dominant males can detect the transvestite’s male hormones with their sensitive tongues, even if they are taken in by their female appearance. AFP

oy band 2PM, the dance/rap outfit managed by JYP Entertainment, South Korea’s most successful talent agency, is about to spread its wings, thanks to a contract signed last Friday with Sony Music Entertainment (Thailand). The signing ceremony at the Dusit Thani cements a joint venture between JYP and Sony, though Birathon Kasemsri na Ayudhaya, Sony Music’s managing director, was quick to say, “2PM will be our only Korean artist.” “And the main attraction of this boy band is Nichkhun, who’s the only Thai in the band. Our contract is ongoing and open to abrogation. There’s an emphasis on part-
nership and communication,” he adds. Making up 2PM are Park Jae Bum, Ok Taek Yeon, Kim Jun Su, Lee Jun Ho, Jang Woo Young, Hwang Chan Sung, and Nichkhun Horvejkul. They broke onto the scene last year with “10 Out of 10”, a high-energy number that blends heavy electronics, guitar and hip-hop beats with their mix of acrobatic and b-boy dance styles. Under the supervision of JYP’s Park Jin-young, the sevenmember 2PM grew out of the defunct 11-member band One Day, with the other four lads forming 2AM. 2PM released their first sixtrack album, “Hottest Time of the Day” last year, with “Only You”, “Angel” and “10 Out of 10” becoming instant hits.
“2AM is about ballads and slow songs, while 2PM is about dance and rap,” explains JYP on a Korean website. “With 2PM, we aim to change the meaning of the term ‘boy band’.”
Repackaging for Thailand Sony’s managing director says the band’s first and sec-
ond outings will be repackaged for the Thai market as one album, along with music videos, behind-the-scenes photos and bonus tracks. It’ll be a available in a few months. He also promises Thai fans a concert around June. “We’ll probably put them on
stage along our Thai artists, maybe with [former D2B ember] Dan Woravej,” he says. “Nichkhun told me that he is a fan of Ben Chalathit and Crescendo.” >> ON THE WEB Listen to the entire interview with 2PM at www.DailyXpress.net

It’s Not Me, It’s You Lily Allen (Capitol) Lily Allen’s sophomore effort sounds brighter and is definitely more danceable than her late2006 debut “Alright, Still”. This time, she’s worked with producer Greg Kurstin of Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue fame, and the result is less pop and a stronger electro underpinning. First single “The Fear” is an eminently danceable number with lyrics that tackle consumerism. “Not Fair” is a melancholic song about her hapless lover, while “F—k You” is an anti-George W Bush protest with “Sesame Street” piano. Other standout tracks are ballads “Who’d Have Known” and “Chinese”.

Tonight: Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand (Sony) After a four-year hiatus, the Scottish band return with a third album that’s loosely based on a night of great partying and the not-so-great effects of the morning after. There’s more rock and less punk on this outing, with “Turn It On” as good a number as you’d expect from any past rock great, and “Live Alone” reminiscent of the Bee Gees but with hints of rock techno. The album starts with “Ulysses”, an interesting opener that’s packed with synthesiser and guitar effects. “Lucid Dreams” is the strongest track with catchy hooks.

ll-female outfits rarely do as well in Thailand as boy bands but that didn’t stop South Korea’s Wonder Girls from selling out the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium last Saturday and turning their two-hour show into a big party. The energetic quintet had the crowd dancing from the word go, with a first set that included “I Wanna”, “Bad Boy”, “Goodbye” and “So Hot”. The girls then took a short break and introduced themselves to their Thai fans before
swinging into a Broadway-musical version of their smash hit “Nobody” and following up with the beautiful ballad “This Time”. The second segment of the show was given over to solo spots. Ye-Eun was the first to perform, her powerful vocals perfect for Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, while Sun-Ye went the sophisticated route, dressing in a blue evening gown for her rendition of “Sun and Moon”.
So-Hee emulated her heroine Beyonce, shaking her booty as she covered “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”, Sun-Mi showed off her dancing skills on “Invite” and Yu-Bin rapped sexily on “Sexy Back.” Thunderous applause and screams greeted the arrival of boy band 2PM, who performed “10 Out Of 10” and “Only You” before handing over to Thai
member Nichkhun for “We Become One”. The Wonder Girls then returned, dressed all in white and gathered around a grand piano to sing “Saying I Love You”, with Ye-Eun tinkling the ivories. The audience danced and sang along again, as the girls reprised “Nobody”, first in a tango version featuring 2PM, followed by the original version, and ended their act with “Tell Me”. For the encore, the girls performed “Wishing on a Star” and remixes of “Nobody” and “Tell Me”.

Wings of dreams Long after Thanksgiving and Christmas, you can still covet a turkey’s big flappers
W
hy turkey wings? Aren’t they tough? Well, yes, they can be a little chewier than chicken wings, but isn’t that the point? For super occasions you need super wings – something that would make a vegan gnaw at his knuckles. The trump card is in the barbecue sauces. A bourbon-teriyaki sauce is an easy mix of soy, sugar, garlic, ginger and some cheap bourbon. A spicy barbecue can be a traditional vinegar-andhot-sauce-based marinade made with a slab of butter and a bit of garlic. For a real taste explosion, try topping a few wings with grated Parmesan during the last 15 minutes of roasting. The honey glaze requires
about half a cup of fresh cilantro and a dash of cumin, salt and lemon zest. The dipping sauce is the easiest. A bottle of your favourite salad dressing keeps things simple. Juice it up with a splash of lemon. Brush the wings with sauce every 20 minutes. You’ll get a lot of smoke from the bourbon-teriyaki, but of the three sauces, it produces by far the most perfume. With only the barest of cooking skills, you can put together a heck of a table, with three mounds of wings, served buffet-style with dipping sauce, icy beer or carafes of ice tea. The wings were succulent and juicy and produce big saucy smiles on everyone’s faces.

briefly James,Williams rally Cavs past Heat
Lebron James
LeBron James and Dwyane Wade got into an old-fashioned shootout on Monday night, but the Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar needed timely firepower from a team-mate down the stretch to walk away with the win when the smoke finally cleared. James scored 42 points with six threepointers, Mo Williams had 17 of his 30 in the final quarter, and the Cavaliers rallied from 11 down in the final quarter to beat the Miami Heat 107-100.

Raul, 31, is in excellent form, helping Real to reduce Barca’s lead at the top from 12 points to four points in the past three weeks. – DPA
Honda close to sale of F1 team Honda Motor is close to an agreement to sell its Formula One team in time for the new season later this month, a Japanese newspaper reported yesterday. “Honda has been making the utmost efforts to avoid the worst case scenario of disbanding the team. Our company and our team will be able to make an announcement in the near future,” the Yomiuri newspaper quoted a Honda official as saying. It did not name the likely buyer. – AFP
India reign in New Zealand wet The strike power of Virender Sehwag, Mahendra Singh Dhoni
and Suresh Raina delivered India a 53-run win in a rain-marred opening one-day international against New Zealand. With the match first reduced to 38 overs each, under the DuckworthLewis system New Zealand were set an imposing target of 278 in reply to India’s 273 for four. They were already watching the run rate rise at an alarming rate when a second rain disruption revised the target to 216 from 28 overs, meaning New Zealand needed 105 from the remaining 7.1 overs. They flayed away, but the game was already gone and at the close New Zealand were 162 for nine. – AFP
Cook ends century dry run in Tests Alastair Cook broke his drought of Test hundreds to collect his eighth Test hundred and earn England a draw in the fourth Test against West Indies on Monday. Left-hander Cook was undefeated on 139 and Kevin Pietersen was unbeaten on 72, and carried England to 279 for two at the finish an hour and 10 minutes before the scheduled close on the last day at Kensington Oval. The result meant that England continues to trail in the five-Test series 0-1, following an innings and 23-run defeat in the opening Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica. - AFP

AUSSIE RISES Comfortable on the course, Ogilvy getting his due AP, Marana, Arizona
E
ven when the desert sun pushed temperatures into the 90s, Geoff Ogilvy was as cool as can be. It wasn’t always that way. When he wasn’t getting the results he expected his first four years on the PGA Tour, no one was as critical of his game than Ogilvy. It wasn’t so much anger – few players get more angry than Tiger Woods – as the inability to keep his emotions from dragging him down. That’s what stood out during his victory in the Accenture Match Play Championship. Ogilvy never flinched, even when he was on the verge of losing in the second round. Whether he was trying to retrieve his ball from a cholla cactus or watching his tee shot on the 343-yard 15th hole stop 4 feet from the cup, he looked the same. “I think she changed him,” said his wife, Juli, from the pa-
tio outside the Dove Mountain clubhouse as Ogilvy mowed down two opponents on Saturday to reach the championship match for the third time in four years. She was referring to Phoebe, their 2-year-old daughter, who lifted her head from a bowl of vanilla ice cream that covered her face. Kicking his feet from a high chair next to her was Jasper, who just turned 1. Indeed, Ogilvy is comfortable in just about any situation. A month before he won the 2006 US Open, he was invited to a black-tie dinner at the White House and wound up at a table with former President George W Bush and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. At Kapalua this year, he looked equally content in blue jeans and flip-flops during a night out with his wife, Adam Scott and actress Kate Hudson. Few players are more articulate, whether it’s discussing history or golf course design. Ogilvy has always been that way. The trick was learning to like himself on the golf course.
“There was no real moment of clarity or epiphany or whatever,” Ogilvy said. “You want to say it was a very gradual process from being generally not very nice to myself on the golf course to being quite nice to myself on the golf course. Being negative on a golf course is a habit. You hit a shot and complain about it, and that’s just the way you play golf. “It takes a while to change that, and it had been coming for a while before La Costa.” La Costa is where Ogilvy first won the Accenture Match Play Championship in 2006, about four months before he captured the US Open at Winged Foot with a birdie-par finish, a major better known even now for Phil Mickelson’s double bogey on the 18th hole. Now, however, Ogilvy is starting to get his due. He became the first player this year with multiple PGA Tour victories, having gone wire-to-wire to win at Kapalua. He now has won three times in his last seven starts, dating to the Australian PGA Championship in December.

NEED A PEP UP? Barca coach sweats as Real Madrid cuts lead to 4 points AP, London
ep Guardiola was lauded by the Barcelona fans when the team held a 12-point lead at the halfway point of the Spanish League season and looked on course to take the title away from Real Madrid. With that lead now down to four and Madrid on a run of 10 league wins in a row, Guardiola is under mounting pressure. If these results continue, he could write his name in the history books as the Barca coach who threw away a huge lead and handed its biggest rival a third title in a row. In his first season in charge, 38-year-old Guardiola now has to lift Barca out of a slump of four games without a win, including back-to-back losses in the league. If he doesn’t, then Barcelona and Madrid could soon be neck-and-neck in the title race. “We were on a good run, but we have dropped quite a few points,” Guardiola said. “We have to refocus ourselves because nobody said this would be easy. League campaigns are long, with potholes, but we are still in a good position.” When Barcelona were building their big lead, the former midfielder, who was hugely popular with the fans as a player, appeared to have the magic touch as a coach too. Playing attack-minded football and setting goalscoring records along the way, Barca went on a 22-match unbeaten run. Real Madrid were well behind, fired manager Bernd Schuster and appeared to have little chance of winning the title again. How things have changed in the past month and now, with eight points sliced off their team’s big lead, the Barca fans

They want to see how Guardiola reacts as Madrid continues to turn up the heat in the title race. After the distraction of a Copa del Rey semi-final against Mallorca today, Barcelona aim to end their poor run. Guardiola’s team surrendered a 2-0 lead and conceded an 89th minute goal to lose 4-3 at Atletico Madrid on Sunday. That followed a 2-1 defeat at home to neighbours Espanyol. Adding a 2-2 draw with Real Betis and a 1-1 Champions League tie with Lyon, that makes four games in a row without a victory. “We had an advantage and Real Madrid have made up Joseph Guardiola eight points on us in three games three months from the where the Spanish title goes end of the competition, but we this season. will get back up and continue,” His team doesn’t have a probGuardiola said. “We will recov- lem scoring goals. with even striker Henry giving away a penalty against Atletico. With Real Madrid surviving injury problems and moving closer with each round of games, Barcelona are now feeling pressure they never thought would come when they had their huge lead back at the halfway stage of the season. While Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao next weekend, they hope that Atletico Madrid won’t hand neighbours Real any easy points and may even end their winning streak. Centreback Carles Puyol said that all teams, even Barcelona, had to get through a poor spell of results at some stage of the season. “It’s a huge blow but we have to continue and be stronger than ever before,” he said. But Barcelona seems to have forgotten how to win games. The only good omen for Barcelona? The last time they lost two games in a row while the league leaders was in 2006. They went on to win not only the title that year, but the Champions League too.
A deal allowing David Beckham to extend his stay with AC Milan through the end of the Italian season is close but not yet complete, Milan chairman Adriano Galliani said yesterday. The former England captain joined Milan on a two-month loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy in January and was due to return to the Major League Soccer club next week. But Beckham wants to stay, and Galliani said the two sides are nearing a deal that would keep him at Milan until the summer. “The deal is not done. We’re working on the possibility of a loan until June 30, but no deal has been reached yet,” Galliani said before boarding a plane for a friendly in Doha, Qatar, according to Milan’s Web site. Beckham has a fiveyear contract with the Galaxy worth US$32.5 million. “The deal is getting more and more concrete,” Galliani told the club’s TV station late on Monday. “I hope we can arrange it so he stays on loan at least until June 30. Then he could return to Los Angeles and rejoin us in January.” Financial terms of the proposal are unknown, but the Galaxy earlier had asked US$10 million from Milan for the outright purchase of Beckham. Milan had said it would pay no more than US$3 million, since he could become available anyway after the MLS season. “This is the direction we’re aiming for,” Galliani said. “It’s complicated, as we’ve always known, but I’m still trying. “He’s transformed himself into a very important player,” Galliani added. – A P

Thai rider hopes for a top-five finish in the championship By Kitinan Sanguansak DAILY XPRESS
hai Honda PTT SAG rider Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot has flown to Spain for a final training session before the Moto GP season-opening Qatar Grand Prix next month. Aiming to continue his steady rise in the 250cc world championship, the 21-year-old Ratthapark, whose 17th finish in the debut season was followed by a 13th place last year, wanted to be fully prepared before embarking on his third campaign in the top competition. Ratthapark, who is the first Thai to contest a full championship season, was accompanied by a large entourage at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday. Among them was AP Honda executive Alaksh Phornprapha. “I’ll focus on getting accus-

son could be my year after two not-so-great campaigns. I’m confident the results are going to be better. I’ll try to break into the top five,” he said, before boarding the flight.
This year, Ratthapark will continue to ride No 14 after using number eight in his rookie year. But the big difference this time round is the arrival of seasoned rider Hector Faubel of Spain, who joined the Stop&Go team during the offseason. Having spent two years as the team’s sole rider, Ratthapark considers Faubel as a benefit rather than a threat. “Faubel joining us won’t have any detrimental effect on me. There won’t be No 1 and No 2 rider tags – the team is going to treat both of us the same. “Actually, I can see Faubel’s arrival helping me immensely. I can learn from him and we can help each other during the campaign. He’s a competent rider. I’m looking forward to working with him.” The 2009 Moto GP season begins with the Qatar Grand Prix, the first and only race to be held under floodlights, on April 12.

he Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) president Suwat Liptapanlop has offered a Bt1-million bonus to team Thailand if they upset Australia in their Davis Cup Group I tie this weekend at the LTAT National Tennis Centre. Suwat said the money should motivate the national team – Danai Udomchoke, Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, Kittipong Wachiramano-wong and Peerakiat Sirilue-thaiwattana – to pull the rug from under the feet of the Aussies. However, Thailand have a slim chance against Australia, who have four players inside the top 200. Former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt, currently at 72, world No 127 Chris Guccione, No 189 Brydan Klein and No 194 Carsten Ball will be tough for the Thai fledglings. All matches will be live on Truevisions.

THESPORT Sri Lanka vice captain Kumar Sangakkara confirmed he and his team-mates were “safe and out of danger” after gun attacks on their team bus in Lahore. The batsman was one of five players who received shrapnel wounds when gunmen opened fire as the bus made its way to the way to the Gaddafi Stadium ahead of the third day of the second Test. Sangakkara told CNN-IBN: “There are a few injuries but everyone is safe and all the players are out of danger. We are shocked, but apart from that everyone is okay. “Thilan [Samaraweera] has a shrapnel wound in his leg, but he is fine. “[Tharanga] Paranavitana had shrapnel in his chest, but thank God it wasn’t very deep and just on the surface. “I had shrapnel injuries in my shoulder, but they have all been removed and I’m okay now. “Ajantha [Mendis] had shrapnel in his neck and scalp, but he too has had medical attention and is fine. “Everyone else is perfectly all right.” Thilan Thushara was the fifth player confirmed by Sri Lanka sports minister Gamini Lokuge to have been injured. The players were this morning waited to be airlifted from the stadium. A vehicle carrying match officials which was following the Sri Lankan team bus was also caught up in the attack. David Beckham would complete the Italian season with AC Milan and return to the Los Angeles Galaxy in mid-July under a deal in the works. Terms of the loan extension were not reported, but the deal was said to be worth millions of dollars to Major League Soccer and the Galaxy, which would lose star ticket seller Beckham for 17 of 30 regular-season games this year. >PAGE 25
