How about loving yourself? Personally, I think we must first love ourselves before learning to share our feelings with others. Try giving love and being compassionate and you’ll be surprised how these can make you a happier person.

HOLY TATTOO!

Welcome to an annual temple festival where various figures are etched into the backs of devotees so they can ward off evil D A I LY X P R E S S

irm in the belief that tattoos will protect them from harm, thousands of Buddhists have attended the tattoo festival at Bang Pra Temple in Nakhon Pathom’s Nakhon Chaisi district to get their backs permanently marked by various types of figures. The holy event has been held every year since Buddhist monk Luang Phor Pern passed away seven years ago. The event is aimed at paying respect and being thankful to

monk teachers as well as Luang Phor Pern, who provided his followers with knowledge such as the incantation to shield them from harm. Luang Phor Pern also taught his followers to make merit and do good things for the prosperity of their community and the country. The temple is famous among devotees because they believe the tattoos designed by Luang Phor Pern or his followers will help them ward off evil and bring them good luck. The artists etch a traditional

tattoo into the backs of believers by inserting black ink into their skin. The most favourite figures are the fleeing tiger and Hanuman. Believers will neither suffer any negative effects from the injections nor experience a bleeding wound. After believers are tattooed, they perform strange actions or go into a trance while they stand amongst the crowd inside the temple. They act like a

monkey, a tiger or even grunt like a boar. Their performance depends on the figure tattooed on their skin. They calm down and return to normal when they are slapped gently on the ears or nose or when their legs are lifted high. At the end of the ritual, people offer food, fruit and dessert to the monks. Then they glow with happiness from attending the traditional ceremony.

Teach your children life subjects and they will end up with fewer problems Want your kids to have a happy life? Instil in them life subjects that are not taught in school: teach them to share and co-exist happily with others in society. “Huge incomes generated by tutorial institutions could indicate that parents are leading their children down the path to hardship because they focus only on academic knowledge,” says Buppasawat Ratchatatanan, director of the Buddhist-leaning

Thaw Si School. As a result, she says, parents overlook how their children live with others in their community or at school and how to teach them to be good. This has given rise to lots of problems among kids. She was speaking at a discussion on ‘Subjects Untaught by Schools’ at the Thai Health Promotion Foundation yesterday. “In fact, academic matters can be found in life subjects. Teachers

and parents should give children a chance to learn academic subjects relating to their life together with instilling in them patience, self-confidence, accountability, sympathy and responsibility,” Buppasawat says. Chaiwat Chaijaruwanit, a member of a group that educates children and youth through communities, says formal education is actually pulling them out of their community, as children believe

they will be able to learn only if they go to school; they don’t recognise that they can learn many other things from their community, which will help them live a happier life. “Thai education focuses on academic subjects but forgets to educate children on many other things outside school that are necessary to their life,” Buppasawat says. “This has led to an increase in child and youth problems.

“If the government focuses only on money or a good economy and aims to boost only academic knowledge, society won’t be happy and there will be a number of problems as we’re seeing today. It should change the direction of education and lay emphasis on life subjects that will help our children and youth live happily,” she adds. Wannapa Phetdee D A I LY X P R E S S

wink, a smile or a raised eyebrow could soon change the music on your iPod or start up the washing machine, thanks to a new Japanese gadget. The device looks like a normal set of headphones but is fitted with a set of infrared sensors that measure tiny movements inside the ear that result from different facial expressions. The gizmo – called the “Mimi Switch” or “Ear Switch” – is connected to a micro-computer that can control elec-

tronic devices, essentially making it a hands-free remote control for anything.

Turning on room lights “You will be able to turn on room lights or swing your washing machine into action with a quick twitch of your mouth,” said its inventor, Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Osaka University. “An iPod can start or stop music when the wearer sticks his tongue out, like in the famous Einstein picture. If he opens his eyes wide, the machine skips to the next tune. A

wink with the right eye makes it go back. “The machine can be programmed to run with various other facial expressions, such as a wriggle of the nose or a smile.” The Mimi Switch could also store and interpret data and get to know its user, said Taniguchi, chief researcher at Osaka University’s Graduate School of Engineering Science in western Japan. “It monitors natural movements of the face in everyday life and accumulates data,” Taniguchi said. He said he was planning to seek corporate funding to market it for practical uses – something he expected might take two or three years.

n Ethiopian film bringing to life the horrifically brutal 1970s and 1980s regime of dictator Haile Mariam Mengistu took top honours at Africa’s main film festival. “Teza” by US-based, Ethiopian-born director Haile Gerima was the jury’s unanimous choice for this year’s Golden Stallion of Yennenga, the award for best film at the gathering in Ouagadougou, considered Africa’s Oscars. The beautifully shot film switches between past and present as it tells the story of an idealistic scientist who studied in Germany in the 1970s before returning to Ethiopia. It deals with big themes such as emigration and dictatorship, racism and war, also

the position of women in Ethiopian society – but Gerima manages not to preach to his audience. As the director could not be in the Burkina Faso capital to pick up the award himself, it was accepted on his behalf by his sister Selome Gerima, who co-produced the film. “Haile asked me to convey his happiness,” she said upon accepting the award. The runner-up Silver Stallion went to South-Africa’s John Kani for “Nothing but the Truth”, which explores a librarian’s experiences with racism in South Africa during and after the apartheid era. The Bronze Stallion went to audience favourite “Mascarades”, an Algerian comedy about a boy who invents an imaginary rich suitor for his narcoleptic sister.

New Zealand is to restore the titles of knights and dames to its honours system. The titles, linked to the British honours system, were dropped in 2000 by the former Labour government. The move brought criticism then that it was part of a move to turn New Zealand, a member of the British Commonwealth, into a republic. Prime Minister John Key said yesterday that restoring the titles would recognise service given to New Zealand, and had the approval of Queen Elizabeth II. “This is about celebrating success,” he said. “The changes will be finalised and come into effect in time for the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June.” – AFP

S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, reflecting on her life in the public spotlight, said on Saturday she misses ordinary pleasures but has no regrets about her choice of public service. “It’s very hard to go out shopping and just enjoy yourself out with your friends; it’s hard to go out to a restaurant and have just a meal with some people you want to talk to without being recognised,” she said during an interview on a popular women’s programme on the Turkish channel NTV. The former first lady even answered questions about her marriage to Bill Clinton and the scandal of the Monica Lewinsky affair that overshadowed his presidency in the late 1990s. When asked if it was love or friendship which enabled her to get past her husband’s adultery, she answered smiling: “Oh, love! And forgiveness, and friendship, and family.” “You know, family, faith, friends are the core of my life and I don’t know anybody whose life is smooth sailing. “If you meet such a person, I want to know them, because I’ve lived a long time and I have yet to meet that person.”

Hong Kong pop star caught in a sex-photo scandal that shocked the Chinese-speaking world early last year said she considered suicide after the pictures were leaked on the Internet. Gillian Chung of the popular Hong Kong female pop duo Twins said “there was one point when I couldn’t see my future and thought the only thing I could do was to end my life”. But in her first interview since the scandal, the 28-yearold singer told Hong Kong broadcaster TVB that she realised “death wouldn’t solve the problem”. The photos – taken by her on-and-off-again boyfriend, Chinese-Canadian actor-singer Edison Chen – showed him and eight Hong Kong stars performing sex acts. The resulting scandal early last year forced Chen and the stars to take a break from the entertainment industry. Chen resurfaced two weeks ago to testify against the com-

Hot site Until a few weeks ago, Tim Edwards was just another one of the men begging for change at a busy Houston underpass, ignored by most drivers who sped on past without a glance. Now, thanks to an Internet marketing campaign and unlikely allies, Edwards has become the human face of homelessness to thousands of online viewers drawn to his website by its deliberately controversial name: Pimp This Bum. During regular webcasts, dozens of visitors to www.pimpthisbum.com ask questions about Edwards’ life

and his slow fall from office manager with a home, a car, and a future to an outcast short of hope and with little prospect of help. The website also is a venue where visitors can donate money, services and goods to help Edwards yank himself out of homelessness. Some homeless advocates say it makes him a victim of exploitation, but the organisers say that edgy tone is what makes the project succeed.

Cage of death A Siberian tiger at a wildlife park near Beijing attacked and killed a man who climbed into its enclosure thinking he found a shortcut down from the Great Wall, a park official said yesterday. The 20-year-old man, surnamed Guo, had been hiking with two other people on the wall when the group decided to jump down to save time on the descent – unknowingly landing themselves in Badaling Wildlife World’s tiger enclosure. The tiger pounced on Guo, knocking him down and clamping its jaws around his throat, said a wildlife officer. Guo was killed instantly. A park ranger who saw the attack chased the tiger in a jeep until it released the body, while the other two men escaped by clambering up a fence and out of the enclosure. – AP

THE SERIOUS SIDE OF LOVE Yongyooth Thongkongtoon, a director well known for his comedies, takes on drama with ‘Best of Times’ XTRA

N E E D I N G A S S I S TA N C E >> The film is inspired by “Wela Rak”, a student-made short, to which Yongyooth purchased the rights. >> The young filmmaker was hired as third assistant director on “Best of Times”. >> Yongyooth and his first assistant director were seriously injured in a car wreck in December while he was driving back to Bangkok from the set in Chanthaburi. He still walks with a pair of canes. >> “Khwamjum Sun Tae Rak Chan Yao” (“Best of Times”) is in cinemas.

O

ver the past few years, director Yongyooth Thongkongtoon has built a reputation for movies that look at such interesting subjects as gay relationships and metrosexuality but deal with them in a good-natured way that risks offending no one. “I present serious issues as bitter pills coated with caramel,” says the director, whose previous movies have included the gay-transgender volleyball comedy “The Iron Ladies” and the sexually perplexed romantic comedy “Metrosexual”. So it comes as something of a surprise to discover that his latest film “Khwamjum Sun Tae Rak Chan Yao” (“Best of Times”) is not a comedy but a straight romantic drama.

“The movie looks how you move on with your life after you’ve failed. This time, I’ve chosen not to dilute what I want to say with comedy.” The idea for making “Best of Times” was born while Yongyooth was working on last year’s horror anthology “See Phrang” (“4Bia”). His segment was a taught Hitchcockian thriller about loneliness. “I discovered while filming my segment of ‘See Phrang’ that I am able to focus on a serious movie without feeling uncomfortable,” he explains.

Going for it “Best of Times” tells the story of a lonely veterinarian (Arak Amornsupasiri) who thinks he has a chance with his old high-school crush (Yarinda Bunnag) when he learns that she’s divorced. But she doesn’t really remember him. Meanwhile, a 50-something widow (Sansanee Wattananukul) takes a shine to

an older man who’s showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease “I think women with broken hearts make themselves feel worse by insisting on maintaining contact with their exlovers,” he says. “Unlike the young lovers, the older couple knows it’s important to grasp happiness. Age is not a barrier but they find themselves up against an unavoidable health problem. “Thai society thinks that retired people are satisfied just to stay at home and take care of their grandchildren. That’s wrong. Older people still have plenty of energy and their thoughts and opinions are more up-to-date than we imagine.” Though there are lighthearted moments in the film, the story conveys plenty of serious messages albeit in a feelgood way. Yongyooth acknowledges the feel-good aspects but says, “it doesn’t have the comic relief of my other films”.

Klum holds her curves She’s been accused of being fat but the German supermodel refuses to diet A F P , Berlin

Supermodel Heidi Klum has hit back at critics who claim she doesn’t have the right figure for the catwalk. In an interview with Bunte magazine, the 35-year-old Klum – currently hostess of the popular “Germany’s Next Top Model” TV show – says,

“I was never a diet sort of person. “But when I started to model, I knew already that I would have to watch what I ate and for example give up wiener schnitzel,” she said, referring to a traditional Austrian dish that consists of veal fried in breadcrumbs.

“My children are my best workout,” she says, adding with a twinkle in her eye, “and I am of course also busy with my husband.” Klum, who’s married to British soul singer Seal, is merciless in her criticism of the would-be models on her show, and her attacks on the young girls have prompted sniping over her own appearance.

Her mum Kelly Emberg was his long-time girlfriend, and Rod had Ruby sing a couple of numbers at his Bangkok show. So they went out sightseeing and, to his delight, lots of people recognised Rod, who performed in Bangkok once before – 20-odd years ago. In fact, so many people started milling around the British singer that the family had to high-tail it out of there on a long-tail boat!

in popularity

Some people are even using the frame as an alarm clock or a digital photo album. Digital photo frames first hit the market in 2007. It took them a few years to achieve widespread popularity, but now the digital multitaskers are flying off shelves, says Constanze Clauss, a spokeswoman for the German Photo Industry Association in Frankfurt. But how can a consumer tell the different models

apart? “They’re pretty much all the same in terms of quality,” says Clauss, adding, “The more expensive ones have more features.” Such features can include anything from an integrated radio, calendar, clock and alarm clock to remote control. Most come with a slot for a camera’s memory card, plus an interface for a USB stick. Some even come with an internal hard drive. “Then you can just transfer the pictures and not leave the memory card stuck in the frame.” Most models can hold about 4,000 pictures. Zoom, automatic rotation, cross fading and programmable time intervals are standard in most frames. Some also have photo finishing tools, so users can adjust contrast and brightness, or even remove red eye effects. Trends are moving away from classic seven or eight-inch frames, which can generally show pictures in a 10 x 15-centimetre format.

Frames with 15-inch displays, rivalling that of a laptop, are moving out of convention halls and into living rooms though the disadvantage when compared to smaller frames they cannot be battery operated. When picking a display, customers need to look past the plexiglas, mahogany, cool silver, neutral black or white frame. Apart from picture quality, it's important to check viewing angles and whether the frame can support 9x13 and 13x18 formats as well as the classic 10x15. Claus recommends going to the store armed with a fully loaded USB stick or memory card so you can try out frame with your own pictures. “Just like with a television, a lot depends on your personal preferences. Some people like more red in their picture. Some like more yellow.”

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Happy Birthday: Just when you think you have everything under control you can expect the unexpected. This will be yet another year of change and searching for your ultimate dream. Once you master the present, the past will become clear and the future that much more inviting. Let your emotions lead the way. ARIES ***** March 21-April 19 You have no time to waste and certainly cannot walk away from what’s important to your future. Believe in yourself and your talent and you can be successful. Quitting is not an option. TAURUS ** April 20-May 20 Trying to push your way into anything will not meet with approval or success. For now, take one step at a time, making each move count. Watch what others do and listen to what they say.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★

GEMINI **** May 21-June 20 You may want to be the leader but don’t expect to get that role without a fight. The competition is great. Put creative and original ideas on the table and you will spark interest. CANCER **** June 21-July 22 Try something different or new and you will be surprised by what you learn. A change within a relationship at work could help you ahead. Don’t change things at home or in your personal life. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 Don’t let a personal relationship cause problems for you professionally or financially. Uncertainty will make you look bad. Even if you aren’t sure about something or someone, don’t let on. VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Don’t hesitate or wait for someone else to make a move. Do your thing and don’t look back or worry about what anyone else thinks or does. Your plans are in place.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LIBRA *** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Your ideas are spectacular and the ability to dazzle someone you really like and admire will not be difficult. There is a lot that can happen if you develop an idea with someone special. SCORPIO **** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Listen to what’s being said but don’t take it as gospel. Someone is likely to feed you false information that may lead you astray. Let common sense be your guide. SAGITTARIUS ***** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Take a pass if someone is trying to get you to do something you don’t want to do. You are better off getting away from home and checking out other options. Don’t let anything hold you back.

Juliette Binoche

Singer-actress Keely Smith is 77. Singer Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders is 67. Guitarist Robin Trower (Procol Harum) is 64. Singer Jeffrey Osborne is 61. Actress Linda Fiorentino is 49. CAPRICORN *** Dec. 22-Jan. 19 Don’t be talked into a risky financial venture. You know better than to mix money and romance. Just because you care for someone doesn’t mean you should support his or her dream. AQUARIUS *** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Emotions will play a big role in the way things unfold and how you handle the situations you face. Honesty must be questioned if someone is having trouble giving you a straight answer. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 You may be able to pick up some valuable information from others that will lead you into a better position. THE SPORT briefly Anelka doubtful for Juventus clash Nicolas Anelka’s chances of making Chelsea’s Champions League match against Juventus in Turin tomorrow remain “touch and go”, according to manager Guus Hiddink. “It is doubtful Anelka will be fit for Tuesday,” the Dutchman admitted. “But it is still a very close thing. He is working, but he has been out now for Anelka many days. We will see what his reaction is to treatment and training.” The possible loss of Anelka is not a headache given the form of Didier Drogba. – AFP

ost Thailand pushed Australia to the limits before losing 3-2 in the Davis Cup Zone Asia/Oceania Group I tie at the LTAT National Tennis Development Centre yesterday. Thailand, after falling 1-2 behind on Saturday, came roaring into the tie when son-of-thesoil Danai Udomchoke rallied gallantly to upset an ailing Lleyton Hewitt 2-6 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-1 in four hours and 10 minutes, and draw level at two all. But the visitors, who were odds-on favourites, eventually closed the tie when big-serving Chris Guccione, a replacement for Brydan Klein, downed un-

fancied Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-3 7-5 7-6 (7-3) to wrap up the decisive point. Australia will play India in May for a slot in the World Group play-off while Thailand will host Kazakhstan the July in the play-off to maintain their status in the regional zone. Australian captain John Fitzgerald, despite the Hewitt’s unexpected loss, was confident that his team would make it through in the end. “To be frank, we expected to win the two rubbers. But that’s the beauty of the Davis Cup because everything can go different ways. We have to give credit to Danai who is a courageous player,’’ said Fitgerald. The former world No 1

Hewitt appeared to have the match all sewn up when he took the first two sets. But the torrid heat and the injury to his left hip slowed down his game from the end of the third set. Danai remains unbeaten on the Centre Court here, having won all his singles matches in the University Games, Asian Hopman Cup and the Asian Cup in 2007 and the Davis Cup. This is the first time I won a five-set match after losing the first two sets. I beat the former world No 1 and a two-time Grand Slam champion. That’s something I should be proud of,’’ said Danai who suffered cramps. Although the victory, a major one in his career, gained him immense confidence, Danai is not get carried away. “Beating Hewitt doesn’t mean that I will beat all other players. Each

gery six months ago and just returned to the tour in January, was disappointed to let the chance slip away after a 2-0 set lead. “My biggest chance was at four all [third set] and I had a break point. If I had got that break I would have come out and served for the match. He played better as the match went on. It was a bit disappointing,’’ said Hewitt, who deserved all praise for his fighting spirit despite the physical disadvantage. “My hip was flaring up a bit today in the third set. We had a lot of long rallies in the first three sets. “Playing in humid condition, my body got fatigued easier than playing indoor. With Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo back in contention after being rested, and Wayne Rooney proving his fitness following a recent hamstring injury, Ferguson has an enviable problem as he attempts to put one over long-time rival and Inter boss Jose Mourinho. “Carlos scored two superb goals, he was a jack in the box all day. He has great energy,” Ferguson said. “My biggest concern at the moment is picking the right team because I am having to leave world class players out. I only hope they recognise that at the end of the season all of their great contributions will have been appreciated.“I took Rooney off in the second half because he is just coming back from that hamstring problem and we didn’t want to take any chances.” Second half goals from Rooney and Park Ji-Sung completed a routine win and booked United’s place in the FA Cup semi-finals for a record 26th time. Fulham manager Roy Hodgson was frustrated that his side’s early good work was thrown away by poor defending at a corner that allowed Tevez to score the opening goal.

Arsene Wenger says his team had already faced alerts.

ir Alex Ferguson faces an anxious wait on the fitness of Rio Ferdinand ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan on Wednesday. The centre-back left Craven Cottage on Saturday wearing a protective support after injuring his ankle during United’s commanding 40 FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham. Ferdinand had been forced to withdraw at half-time with United already in a comfortable two-goal lead and manager Ferguson admits he is uncertain whether the player will recover in time for the second leg clash with Italian giants Inter at Old Trafford. That last 16 tie is finely poised after a scoreless draw in the teams’ first meeting in the San Siro. Ferguson said England defender Ferdinand’s importance to his side’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition, and so keeping alive their hopes of winning five trophies in a season, could not be underestimated. “Ferdinand is a concern for us. He went over on his ankle and we will have to wait and see how he is,” Ferguson said. “We just hope he makes it because he is so important for us.” Ferguson also faces a se-

rsenal manager Arsene Wenger raised the prospect of English football becoming a target of violent extremism, adding his team had already faced security alerts in comments published yesterday. Wenger spoke in the wake of the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team which left eight people dead as they travelled to a Test match in Lahore, Pakistan last week. “It has happened to us, where we have had alerts before games that we played at home,” Wenger told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. “We kept quiet about it. I wonder about this because in England, you don’t get any police escort before games – they refuse, especially in London. We [the world of football] don’t regard ourselves as terror targets but you wonder why not.” Arsenal does not employ private security, unlike teams like Manchester United, the paper said, adding that Wenger thought this was the responsibility of the state. “You rely on the internal security of the country where you are,” he said. He added that he had previously experienced security worries when he was manager of Japanese side Nagoya Grampus.

n unbeaten 163 by Sachin Tendulkar led India to a comprehensive 58-run win over New Zealand in the third oneday international yesterday and ensured they cannot lose the series. Tendulkar, utilising his full array of textbook and improvised shots, was the stand-out figure as India scored 392 for four after being sent into bat first. It was the highest international ODI score against New Zealand, but the Black Caps were on target to overhaul it when they reached 166 without loss before the middle order

Inter click into gear Inter Milan clicked ominously into gear ahead of their Champions League trip to Manchester United with an impressive 2-0 victory at Genoa on Saturday. Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli maintained Inter’s seven-point lead at the top of Serie A after Juventus won 1-0 at Torino in the Turin derby. Inter played like a Jose Mourinho team, full of power, commitment, organisation and a little swagger too. The only negatives for Mourinho were injuries to centre-backs Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso who both left the game during the first period. That, and United’s impressive showing in beating Fulham in the FA Cup, will be Mourinho’s two main worries. AFP

self-destructed and they were all out for 334. The win, completed in 45.1 overs, gave India an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the series with only two matches remaining. New Zealand had reason to think luck was on their side when they won the toss and had an early success with the dismissal of Virender Sehwag, India’s dangerman in their previous matches, for only three. Gautam Gambhir followed for 15 and India were two for 65 in the 13th over when India stepped up to a level New Zealand had no answer for. Yuvraj Singh joined the impe-

During the batting power play they added 69 runs with overs of 13, 13, 12, 17 and 14, propelling India from 105 after 20 overs to 206 after 30. Yuvraj kept his running to a minimum, with 10 boundaries and six sixes in his 87 which came off only 60 balls. On a ground with short boundaries, the Indian innings produced 18 sixes in all, equalling the world record for an international innings, and New Zealand added 13 to set a record 31 sixes in a match. Fast bowler Peter Siddle claimed the remaining two Proteas wickets in the first over of the day, to see the hosts dismissed on their overnight score of 138, a first innings deficit of 214 runs. Atletico felt hard done by against Real and striker Sergio “Kun” Aguero vented his frustration at not being awarded a late penalty claiming the referee took the easy way out. “It was a penalty,” fumed Aguero. “It was the final incident in the game but you aren’t going to get a penalty in the dying minutes at the Bernabeu. “I looked at the clock and there was a minute left and he [the referee] wasn’t going to give it.” Atletico fall five points behind fourth-placed Villarreal who defeated Espanyol 1-0.

The Honda is still up for grabs

WINNING MANTRA Sun, sea and Singha victory for Indian star Randhawa AGENCIES, Phuket

ndian star Jyoti Randhawa cruised to a comfortable twostroke victory at the Singha Thailand Open for his eighth Asian Tour victory yesterday. The 36-year-old Randhawa produced a flawless five-underpar 65 to hold off Rhys Davies of Wales, who equalled his best performance on Tour with a closing 67 at Laguna Phuket Golf Club for second place. Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wei-chih settled for third position, three behind the winner, after a 65 while SSP Chowrasia of India was tied fourth alongside upcoming Chinese talent Wu Ashun after rounds of 69 and 66 respectively. “I’m feeling great. I played marvellous golf the last two days. To shoot five under without any bogeys was good, I’m very happy,” said Randhawa, whose winning total of 17-under-par 263 earned him a cheque for US$79,250. Tied for the overnight lead with Davies and Chowrasia, Randhawa, who charged into contention with a sizzling 62 on Saturday, pulled one stroke clear of the pack after shooting three birdies in his opening five holes. He coolly maintained his grip down the final straight with further birdies on the 12th and 15th holes. “The way the course was set up and the way it was playing, I thought I could shoot some low numbers and I did that the last two days and I’m glad I did it,”

Jyoti Randhawa of India holds the winner’s trophy after the final round of the Thailand Open. said Randhawa, who is the first Indian to lift the Singha Thailand Open King’s Trophy. The 2002 Asian No 1 said his relaxed attitude, where he spent time scuba diving with fellow competitor and brother-in-law Digvijay Singh and their families, was the key to his success on the holiday isle of Phuket. “That’s the mantra now,” said Randhawa. “I need to relax a bit and chill out. You don’t practice and work hard during tournaments. You do it before that. I came here, I swam, I went scuba diving and I enjoyed myself. And here I am, I’ve won a golf tournament. I learned a lot and I think I need to do this more often. “The two boys [Davies and Chowrasia] got me going.

They were on my heels the whole day. SSP made an eagle on the first hole and I needed to wake up and do something and luckily I did. It was good competition.” Davies, who was bidding for a first Asian Tour title, was happy that he pushed Randhawa all the way. The 23-year-old blew his chance of turning on the pressure at the two closing par five holes by bogeying the 17th after finding trouble in thick rough. “Jyoti played great. He hit a number of great shots and a few good putts at the right time,” said Davies. Thongchai Jaidee and Chapchai Nirat finished as the top Thais in a share of 10th place at 270.

Yang Yong-eun’s slow and steady approach with an even-par 70 kept him in front by one shot after three rounds of the Honda Classic in Florida on Saturday. On the South Korean’s tail were Jeff Klauk (67) and Jeff Overton (70, with a triple-bogey on the 11th hole, going twice in the water, followed by two birdies in his last three holes) entering the Honda’s final round. “I kept fighting,” Overton said. “And now I’ve got a chance to win.” Yang bogeyed the third hole, birdied the 15th and made nothing but pars the rest of the way. He’s in position to win $1,008,000 on Sunday, or 1.567 billion South Korean won – not to mention a two-year US PGA Tour exemption. “Both would be good,” Yang said. Meanwhile in Newport Beach, California, Mark O’Meara shot a 5-under 66 to grab a share of the lead with Bernhard Langer at the Toshiba Classic on Saturday. O’Meara, who won 16 US PGA Tour events – including two majors – was winless on the Champions Tour in 33 starts. “It would mean so much to win, especially here,” said O’Meara. Meanwhile in Christchurch, New Zealand, Steve Alker shot a finalround 5-under-par 67 yesterday to win the New Zealand PGA by two strokes over two other local golfers. – A P

Shin Ji-yai of South Korea celebrates with her victory.

outh Korea’s Shin Ji-yai birdied her first four holes yesterday to set up her fourth LPGA tour victory at the $2 million HSBC Women’s Champions. Shin, who takes home a $300,000 winner’s cheque, shot a final round 66 to finish the tournament at 11-under 277, two shots ahead of Australia’s Katherine Hull (74) at the

Tanah Merah Country Club course. Shin lived up to her nickname ‘Final Round Queen,’ a moniker she said her fans gave her after regularly coming from behind to win. The victory was 20-year-old Shin’s first as an LPGA member. She won three LPGA tour events earlier as a member of the Korean and Japanese LPGAs.

“I’m very surprised and very happy,” said the 5-foot-2 Shin, who also had a 66 on Saturday to thrust herself into contention after a moderate opening two rounds. “I can’t believe I birdied the first four holes.” Hull led going into the final day by two shots, and two birdies on the front nine put her four strokes ahead at the turn. Her title hopes began to evaporate when she bogeyed

the 10th, then on the 13th she shanked her tee shot into the crowd en route to a double bogey, dropping her into a share of the lead. “I made a really bad choice on 13,” Hull said. “I broke my game plan so I got what I deserved. “I decided at the start of the week to hit 3-wood off that tee. I hit a driver and it was the wrong choice. I was too greedy and overconfident.”
