y work carving ice decorations in a hotel was good training for the snow sculpture contest. But with no institute for teaching ice carving in Thailand, and low pay even if you do master the craft, it’s no surprise that few people make it a career. Skilled professionals are in demand abroad though, where ice carving can earn you good money. Unfortunately, young learners get discouraged though by the patience needed and the physically demanding work — I know I did. But a bright future is not out of reach, just keep practising and stay calm.

Atomic inventions The Science Ministry proudly presented two new Thai inventions that use nanotechnology at a press conference yesterday – a mosquito repellent lotion and a fish sauce powder. The products will be on display at the NAC2009 (NSTDA Annual Conference 2009) from Thursday to Saturday at Pathum Thani's Thailand Science Park. When Science Minister Kalaya Sophonpanich plunged her lotioncovered hand into a box of mosquitoes, all were duly repelled. She said the lotion represented a technological leap by the National Nanotechnology Centre (NANOTEC) in an effort to fight the economic crisis. Most of the products in the Bt2-billion-per-year market for mosquito repellents were either chemical-based and so could cause skin irritation, or herbal products whose repellent effect did not last long, she said. But the nano-emulsion technology of the citronella, hairy basil and vetiver oil-based new product should extend its effect to five hours, she said, and was safe for infants and small children. They also developed a fish sauce powder with high quality, taste and scent when mixed with water, Kalaya said. The powder was useful as a condiment, a food additive and for exporting as it reduced transportation costs. – D A I L Y X P R E S S DAILY

arine police yesterday recovered the body of one of the seven missing tourists near the site where a boat taking 30 tourists on a diving tour to Phang Nga’s Similan Islands capsized in a sudden storm on Sunday. The Phuket office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation have identified the deceased as Gabrielle Jetzinger, an Austrian woman, but authorities are waiting for confirmation from relatives. Police are using boats and a helicopter in the search for passengers missing after the 29-metre Choke Somboon 19, a Dive Asia Company boat, sank 30 kilometres off Phromthep Cape.

Frogmen were on standby to investigate the capsized boat to find out if any of the missing were originally trapped inside. Preecha added that the Phuket Tourism Authority Office was providing information about survivors and the missing.

Preecha Reungchan yesterday morning reported that 23 passengers – three Japanese, eight Germans, three Swiss, one Austrian and eight Thais – had been rescued from life rafts. The six still missing are Jumpa Sorntat (Thailand); Yuba Hirotsuga (Japan); Klaus Konradoer (Austria); Monika Schuster (Austria); Sibylle Bucher (Switzerland); and Rolf Niederberge (Switzerland). Victim of a twister? Prawit Jaempanya, director of the Central Weather Forecast Bureau, said records showed a fierce storm had blown for an hour in the area of the accident. The onset of the hot season brought suddenly-occurring typhoons, he added, but couldn’t confirm reports that the boat was the victim of a twister. Typhoons usually take about an hour to gather, he said, and if they show up on radar, warnings are issued.

Muziic turns YouTube into rich source for songs A schoolboy and his father have unleashed software that lets people listen to YouTube’s vast collection of music videos as if it were a private collection. Muziic software created by 15-year-old David Nelson enables computers to mine YouTube’s rich database of songs and play customised lists of tunes free of charge. “The Muziic player is a pretty cool little thing,” said analyst Matt Rosoff of Directions On Microsoft. “It looks and works a lot like iTunes in that it is a downloadable desktop application; but you get all the content from YouTube. You have an all-in-one-place library of music for free.” Google, which bought YouTube in 2006, says the Muziic service has only recently caught its eye and that it is checking whether it conforms to the YouTube terms of service. Older fathers’ children

‘less intelligent’ Kids of older dads perform less well in tests conducted at eight months, four years and seven years of age A F P , Melbourne

C

hildren fathered by older men are likely to be less intelligent than the offspring of younger dads, Australian and US scientists have found. The surprise result contrasted sharply with earlier studies showing that older mothers produced children more likely to record above average intelligence scores, the researchers concluded. Lead scientist John McGrath from the Brisbane-based Queensland Brain Institute said the result was a world first and had implications for men in Western societies who

have delayed fatherhood until their 40s or older. “The results were quite startling as it was thought that the age of the father was less of a concern compared to the age of the mother,” McGrath said.

The risks “Now we are getting more evidence of the age of the father being just as important – the older a dad is, the worse his children tend to do in intelligence tests.” Researchers examined data collected on 33,000 children in the United States between 1959 and 1965 fathered by men

aged from 15 to 65. They found that the children of older dads performed less well in intelligence tests conducted at eight months, four years and seven years of age. The researchers said previous studies had linked older fathers to an increased risk of health problems in their children, including schizophrenia, autism, dyslexia, epilepsy and dwarfism. However, the study published in the US journal Public Library of Science Medicine is the first to suggest there is also a link with general intelligence. McGrath said the research team could not draw conclusions on how having an older father impacted on children later in life.

A group of Malaysian burglars found out the hard way how important it is to carry the right tools of the trade. And their timing was off, too. Police officer Abdul Jalil Hassan said yesterday that the burglars forced their way into a beauty saloon in Kuala Lumpur and broke through a wall with a sledgehammer to enter the adjacent pawnshop. The crooks, however, could not break open the safe in the pawnshop because they didn’t have the right tools. They fled empty-handed when they heard employees coming for work early on Monday despite it being a public holiday.

A whole lotta ‘Funk’ Street Funk Rollers return to the scene with 10 tracks of psychedelic rock

Various Artists (Reprise)

This soundtrack of the superhero flick, an animation adapted from a comic book, compiles music from the 1950s to the ’80s as eclectic as Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” to Nat “King” Cole’s “Unforgettable”, and Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee” to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Most of the 12 songs resonate with a sense of timelessness, except for the surprise inclusion of Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row” covered by emo kings My Chemical Romance. Jimi Hendrix’s version of Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” gets the adrenaline going rocking, with Billie Holiday’s “You’re My Thrill” and Nina Simone’s “Pirate Jenny” serving up with jazz. Overall, it is a great soundtrack, full of classic and emotional tunes.

he Street Funk Rollers come roaring back onto the local scene with a new album, the simply titled “IV” on their original label, Black Sheep. “Three years ago we were facing a dead end, so we agreed to drop the band and go off and do our own thing for a while,” explains frontman and guitarist Arthapong “Oat” Boonsermsab, adding that he’s happy to be back making music with bassist Tanawit “Na” Pongcharoen and drummer Natthapol “Note” Ruekarunothai. “The album title pays tribute to my favourite bands, Led Zeppelin and Foreigner,” both of whom called their fourth albums ‘IV’, but of course I’m not comparing my band with my idols,” he adds. “I decided to go back to Black Sheep after seeing the problems other label-less bands faced with distribution after coming out of the studio. I felt it would be too exhausting to cope with marketing and management, as well as taking care of copyright issues.” The 36-year-old frontman wrote both the lyrics and melodies of all 10 new tracks, which blend rock with psychedelic soul, funk and jazz. The first two cuts are “Chua Korn”

A few years ago, I know we were an inspiration for fans, so I hope they won’t feel disappointed with this new album.”

You may not even know what 4WD transmission really means, but you like the idea of being able to drive anywhere and on any surface. It’s having the option that counts. For those of you who want a

though it won’t be for much longer, as Land Rover is planning to introduce a smaller SUV based on the LRX concept. The Freelander 2 comes with a more boxy front, characteristic of Land Rover, along with more boxy lights and taillights that stick out like circles. It’s bigger than its predecessor too, looking more like its bigger brothers, the Discovery 3 and Ranger Rover. On the inside, the Freelander is possibly one of the best SUVs in its size. Both driver and front passenger get adjustable armrests, material build quality is high, there’s a great 6CD sound system, a Bluetooth connection for the phone and an overall sense of robustness. And even if you do no more than collect the kids from school in the Freelander, you have the “terrain response system”. This is a knob that allows you to select between general driving, grass, gravel, snow, sand, mud and ruts. With terrain response, the onboard computer systems select the correct gearbox settings, adjust the suspension height, adjust the differential lock settings and even alter the throttle response of the

engine suitable for the terrain. Completing the experience with the Freelander 2 is the 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces a massive 400Nm of torque. Mated with a six-speed automatic gearbox, we’re talking about low fuel consumption with ridiculous acceleration. With it’s on- and off-road capabilities, great diesel engine, great interior and brand image, the Freelander really hits the sweetspot. It doesn’t come cheap though – the price tag is a jawdropping Bt3.99 million.

Australia clinch series against SA Australia clinched the Test series against South Africa when they won the second Test by 175 runs at Kingsmead. South Africa were bowled out for 370 in their second innings with 37.4 overs to spare on the final day. The series win enabled Australia to bounce back after losing a home series against the same opponents earlier in the season. The victory was virtually sealed when the tourists dismissed overnight batsmen Jacques Kallis (93) and AB de Villiers (84) inside the first hour. Left-arm spinner Simon Katich had figures of three for 45. – AFP

Chanderpaul, Nash stump England England wobbled to 80 for three in their second innings, after Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash collected hundreds to keep West Indies in the fifth and final Test on Monday. England lost the wickets of their captain Andrew Strauss, stylish No3 Owais Shah, and their vice captain Alastair Cook in a dramatic hour and 10 minutes before stumps were drawn on the penultimate day at Queen’s Park Oval. The visitors had earlier gained a lead of just two runs, after Chanderpaul scored his 21st Test hundred, an undefeat-

ed 147, and Nash made his maiden Test hundred of 109, as West Indies were dismissed for 544, replying to England’s first innings total of 546 for six declared. – AFP

Mourinho returns to Old Trafford needing a win or a draw against old foe Fergie AFP, Manchester

I

f there was a world record for the fastest sprint by a manager in a designer overcoat, then Jose Mourinho’s dash down the touchline at Old Trafford in 2004 would take some beating. Five years and two days on from that groundbreaking and career-making event, Mourinho returns to the Theatre of Dreams tonight for his first serious European assignment at the helm of Inter Milan. He may not be planning to rerun that iconic romp but it is a safe bet that the Portuguese coach is every bit as intent on ruining Sir Alex Ferguson’s evening as he was when Porto were making his reputation by navigating their way past United on their path to Champions League glory. With the benefit of hindsight,

the last-minute equaliser from Costinha that triggered Mourinho’s jubilant jig five years ago could be seen as a moment of freakish good fortune. Two goals from Benni McCarthy had enabled Porto to come from behind to secure a 2-1 first-leg lead. A Paul Scholes header early in the return match put United in the driv- Inter coach ing seat, and only Mourinho a mistaken offside decision denied the midfielder a second that would have put the tie beyond reach long before Costinha’s late equaliser sent Porto into the last eight. Mourinho’s subsequent history has demonstrated that the win at Old Trafford was far from being a fluke however and, with only one defeat in his 13 direct encounters with Ferguson, he has earned the right to a bit of respect in these quarters. Not that he doesn’t know it, of course. Asked in the build-up if he saw himself as a potential successor to Ferguson

at the head of the Old Trafford hierarchy, Mourinho was delightfully immodest. “Special clubs need special managers, so in theory it could work,” he said. “If you want me to rule out ever being Manchester United manager then I can’t.” Ferguson declares himself immune to the provocation implied in such comments. “I’m used to him and I’m not shocked by anything he has to say anymore,” said the Scot. “In the build-up to a match against Jose I have to expect everything from him.” United’s manager went on to suggest United’s current cop of players had simply to emulate their display in last weekend’s 4-0 FA Cup thrashing of Fulham if they are to continue to progress in the Champions League after a goalless stalemate in the first leg. “We controlled them well in Milan – Inter only had a couple of half-chances in the second half,” Ferguson reflected. “My players played with an incredible level of concentration. They have to do the same in the second leg.”

PEP’S BIGGEST TEST AP, Barcelona, Spain

B

arcelona coach Pep Guardiola faces the biggest test of his debut season when the Spanish powerhouses meet French champions Lyon in the return leg of their Champions League final-16 match-up. Lyon have a challenge of their own with France striker Karim Benzema still in doubt to start for tonight’s match. Benzema was replaced at halftime in Lyon’s weekend loss to Lille due to a nagging hip injury, which has been bothering him for nearly 10 days. “I have a few problems but, yes, I think I can play,” Benzema said, according to Spanish daily Sport. “I don’t want to lose this match for anything in the world.” The two clubs head into the match at the Camp Nou following a 1-1 draw at Lyon in the first leg. Guardiola’s rookie season has been close to perfect, with the Catalan giants picking up a victory over the weekend to snap a winless slide and recoup extra points over Real Madrid atop the Spanish League. Barcelona are already through to the Copa del Rey final and must overcome Lyon – and an 0-3 record against French clubs in two-legged series – to keep their European hopes and the elusive treble bid alive. “The most important thing is ourselves,” midfielder Seydou Keita said. “If we’re good, we’ll

Lyon forward Karim Benzema doesn’t want to sit out the return match in a tie poised at 1-1. win the game.” Guardiola will be without captain Carles Puyol after the Spain defender was sidelined for three weeks when he injured his left ankle against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. Midfielder Andres Iniesta has played well since his return from injury, while Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry are expected to play. The trio have combined for 55 of Barcelona’s 76 league goals this season. Barcelona trounced Lyon 3-0 in a group stage match at the Camp Nou last season, although neither team is putting much credence into that result after the French club’s strong performance at the Stade de Karim Benzema Gerland where Benzema hit the

post after nearly scoring. “Barcelona taught us a lesson and I hope it serves to keep us sharp from the opening minute,” Benzema said. “[But] I’m conscious that it will be very difficult to qualify.” Lyon controlled with Juninho scoring from a first half free kick before Barcelona took control in the second half, but managed only Thierry Henry’s 69th-minute equalizer. Lyon, trying to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in three years, will be short-handed against one of the most explosive teams in Europe with John Mensah missing to a hamstring injury, while fellow defender JeanAlain Boumsong is in doubt with the same injury.

Both AS Roma and Arsenal have been hit by striker concerns ahead of their Champions League second round, second leg clash at the Stadio Olimpico tonight. Arsenal’s Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out already while Roma are sweating on the fitness of their emblematic striker Francesco Totti. But while Roma are scrimping around to try to find fit attacking players, Arsenal are set to welcome back two young guns from the treatment table. Brazilian-born Croatia striker Eduardo proved his fitness on Sunday following a hamstring problem by scoring a cracker in Arsenal’s FA Cup victory over Burnley while Theo Walcott made his first appearance since shoulder surgery in November in a 20-minute cameo. It has all left Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feeling buoyed despite the absence of Adebayor, sidelined for a month with a hamstring problem. “I haven’t made the team yet but Walcott and Eduardo will certainly be in the squad. The more resources you have the better it is and they are two guys who can score goals,” Wenger said. “We slowly have all our players coming back. That can be decisive because we are going into the final sprint.” Walcott himself admits he is not yet fit enough to start but he hopes to make an impact from the substitutes bench. – A F P

Asian fury at baseball’s world classic

WILDCARD SHAME Danai says Thai tennis authorities have failed local youngsters By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS

avis Cup hero Danai Udomchoke has hit out at the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand’s decision to favour former world No 3 Guillermo Coria with a wildcard for two US$50,000 Challenger events in Thailand while overlooking promising local players. The Thai No 1, who produced two points for Thailand in the Davis Cup tie against Australia, including a stunning five-set win over Lleyton Hewitt, said the tennis body failed to show enough support for Thai players by handing the privilege card to the Argentine. “I don’t think it’s a good idea. The main reason for having the Challengers here is to have more tournaments for Thai players to compete in. But they gave a wildcard to Coria. Argentina has never given a wildcard to a Thai player,’’ said Danai, who will be taking part in the events. “They don’t seem to be concerned much about the future of Thai players. Now only two Thais will get wildcards into the main draw,’’ he added. Coria, who missed most of the season last year through injury, will use the Challengers, the first starting next week at the Rama Gardens Hotel and the second the following week in Nakhon Ratchasima, as his comeback tournaments. A wildcard will also be given to world Junior

Thai No 1 Danai Udomchoke has attacked the distribution of wildcards for local tournaments. No 2 Grigor Dimitrov, a former junior Wimbledon champion. Another team Thailand Davis Cup player, Kittipong Wachiramanowong, will be awarded the third wildcard for the two weeks while the fourth will go to either Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana or Peerakit Siributwong. World No 86 Andreas Beck of Germany, South Korean Lee Hyung-taik and Australian Davis Cup’s Chris Guccione and Brydan Klein will also take part in the events. “I was surprised the ranking cut-off was at 218 which is more like a US$125,000 tournament. It’s a very tough field,’’ said Danai.

Federer hires Agassi’s guru Roger Federer has hired Darren Cahill, who guided Andre Agassi to the No 1 ranking, as his new coach, Associated Press reports. The 27-year-old Swiss, who hasn’t played a match since he lost the final of the Australian Open to top-ranked Rafael Nadal, will start working with Cahill at the Indian Wells tournament in California, which begins this week. Federer had been guided by Australian coaches Peter Carter, who died in 2002, and Tony Roche. Although Federer worked with Jose Higueras during last year’s clay-court season, he hasn’t had a coach since he split from Roche.

Japanese slugger Ichiro Suzuki said he was furious after a 1-0 loss to South Korea in the final game of the first round of the World Baseball Classic. Both nations have qualified for the next round in California that starts on Sunday but the Seattle Mariners star was hot under the collar after Monday night’s loss, which avenged a 14-2 win by Japan earlier in the round. “Defeat is defeat, even by a margin of one run,” said the 35-year-old leadoff batter, who is still struggling to find his form after going 4-for-14 in Japan’s first three games of the tournament. “I am angry at the fact that we lost,” he said. “It would have been great if we had crushed them.” The Japanese icon, who helped lead the team to victory at the inaugural Classic in 2006, said he was now trying to focus on the next round. Japan and South Korea both flew overnight to training camps in Arizona before moving to San Diego for a group stage in the second round that will include Mexico and the winner of Tuesday’s match-up between Australia and Cuba. “I am thinking about what comes next ... like how to build it up,” said Suzuki, who holds the US Major League season hits record with 262 in the 2004 campaign. “How shall we boost ourselves mentally rather than physically?,” he said. Saha can’t wait for ‘amazing’ Man United A F P , Liverpool

Everton’s Louis Saha has a point to prove against United.

verton striker Louis Saha believes his side can shock Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals despite the amazing form of his former club. Saha scored the winner in Sunday’s quarter-final against Middlesbrough at Goodison Park and Everton were paired against United in the draw for the last four.

The France star admitted the prospect of facing a United team on course for a remarkable clean sweep of five trophies in one season is daunting, but he is convinced Everton can win at Wembley next month. “The semi-final draw with Manchester United is obviously extra-special for me, of course, because I used to play for them and this will be a very

big moment for me,” he said. “I have only been away from the club for a season, but things have moved on even from my time there. Now they have Dimitar Berbatov to bring in, it is amazing the strength they have right through the squad. United are just amazing. The great players they have and the big squad, they seem to win all the time. “We know it will be hard in

the semi-final, and I am really looking forward to facing my old club and the friends I have there. But I also know we can win at Wembley.” Saha knows the semi-final is the toughest draw Everton could have been given. “We will have to play hard against a team of United’s quality. We will be underdogs against a great team of quality and belief,” he said.
