orking as a DJ on radio and TV, I get a lot of requests for advice from teenagers. I’d suggest that all parents stay friendly with their kids if they want to raise them well: it’s best to be just like close pals. Listening and giving advice is always better than preaching. Another key is to encourage them in what they love to do. With the right support, teens can be nurtured to become “quality” adults. More importantly, whenever your child encounters a problem, you will be the first one they turn to.

he bodies of four missing tourists were yesterday found trapped inside their dive boat, which capsized in a sudden storm on Sunday night off Phuket’s Promthep Cape.

Six dive masters from the Dive Asia Company, which operated the ill-fated diving trip, began an underwater search at 3.30pm yesterday.

Trapped in sleeping quarters They told police they spotted the bodies of three women and one man inside sleeping quarters on the Chokesomboon 19 boat but were unable to retrieve them, said Pol Lt-Colonel Prasert Srikhunrat, deputy commander of Marine Police Division 8. The mission to retrieve the bodies will resume today.

Police said the bodies were believed to be those of an Austrian, a German and two Swiss nationals.

The boat was resting 70 metres below the sea’s surface meaning the divers were limited to a 20minute search, said Prasert. Two people remain missing.

Meanwhile, the husband and daughter of Austrian tourist Gabrielle Jetzinger, 52, used dental records, and a ring and watch she was wearing to positively identify her body.

he economic crash has hit ex-comedian Cholay Dokkradon so hard that he’s decided to try his luck in show biz again.

In a dramatic bid to make the headlines (it worked), Cholay donned a sequinned evening gown yesterday for a stroll around Victory Monument.

No whistles, plenty of laughs “I’ve never looked good in women’s clothes,” Cholay said, in masterly understatement.

“But I know the audience will go for this.”

His dress and hairstyle was a take-off of singer Marsha Wattanapanich’s talk-of-thetown appearance at the recent Subhanahongsa awards ceremony.

“I thought a similar style

would catch people’s attention,” Cholay said.

He shimmied around Victory Monument, pausing only to hand out name cards and badger people to hire him for a show.

“The response is warm. I’m grateful,” he said.

There were words of greeting and support, and even flowers. Some people offered him money too, but he politely refused.

“I can’t accept money without doing anything for them in return. If they hire me for a show, at least I can give them some laughter.”

New troupe, new shows Plans for shows are underway, with eight veteran comedians already recruited for his new troupe and two new faces yet to be found.

“We will be debuting this weekend,” he said.

Big comedy shows at entertainment venues are only part of Cholay’s plans – he’s taking bookings for birthday parties, wedding ceremonies and other special occasions, too.

Tears of a clown Cholay – real name Nirun Changklang – quit comedy a

few years back to pursue an acting career.

When the acting jobs dried up it looked like his show biz dream had ended.

With his small savings, he hoped to start a new, quieter life selling books. But after finding that flogging print doesn’t pay, he’s seeking out the limelight again.

“Every month, I have to dig deep into my fast-shrinking life savings. I need to make a change because I have a house to pay for, and the debts could get out of control.”

SWEETENING A BITTER PILL Student volunteers ease the strain and bring smiles to a Nonthaburi hospital

he change in patients is easy to see,” says Dr Praputh Leelaprute, director of Bangbuathong Hospital.

“They’re simply happy to have the students around, reading books, the dharma or newspapers to them.”

The Nonthaburi hospital has been inviting local students to volunteer their services to ease the stress of patients’ life since 2007.

To date, more than 1,000 from 12 schools have answered the call, with a core of 200-300 from seven schools volunteering regularly at the hospital. So far 150 students have been presented with certificates of appreciation.

Patients recover faster “The students choose whatever work they think best suits them,” says Praputh. “They can help patients with information, serve them drinks, help out at the pharmacy, and play folk songs, read books or chat to patients to keep their morale up.”

Praputh adds that the project aims to instil a volunteer spirit in primary, secondary and vocational students. The

The Metropolitan Police has joined forces with Sor Wor Por 91 (FM91) traffic radio station to launch a project that will help passengers get back their belongings they leave in taxis.

Under the Taxi Oonjai Khonghai Daikheun project, passengers can make a free call to hotline 1644 to keep a record of which taxi they ride in, says station executive Jaiton Sriwangpol. If they forget any of their belongings in the taxi, the station can help contact the driver so he can return the items, she adds.

The idea came after many passengers contacted the station to ask it to locate forgotten items. Many taxis, too, have asked the station for help so they could return the items to their rightful owners.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles say Coolio has been charged with cocaine possession.

The 45-year-old rapper, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey, was also charged with battery stemming from his Friday arrest at Los Angeles International Airport.

Authorities say he grabbed a screener’s arm to prevent a luggage search. Ivey was released on $10,000 (Bt360,000) bail and is scheduled for arraignment on April 3.

Burglar,90, arrested in Peru A 90-year-old woman was arrested in Lima for taking part in a burglary.

The woman, who looked like a sweet grandmother, arrived with two other women at a house that was for sale in the neighbourhood of Los Olivos in the Peruvian capital. The elderly woman distracted the owner, pretending to negotiate for the house, while the other two stole valuable objects.

When they were found out, the three women fled for a taxi that was waiting for them. The elderly woman, however, did not make it fast enough and had to run off. She was arrested just two blocks away.

At the police station, she initially lied about her name and told police that the two other women had tricked her by saying they were just going for a ride.

However, when her real name was known, the authorities learned she had a record as a thief.

apan’s robot teacher calls roll, smiles and scolds, drawing laughter from students with her eerily lifelike face. But the developer says it’s not about to replace human instructors.

Unlike more mechanicallooking robots like Honda Motor’s Asimo, the robot teacher, called Saya, can express six basic emotions – surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness, sadness – because its rubber skin is being pulled from the back with motors and wiring around the eyes and mouth.

In a demonstration, the robot’s mouth popped open, its eyes widened and eyebrows arched to appear surprised.

Saya pulled back on its lips to make a smile, and said simple phrases such as “Thank you”, while its lips moved to express pleasure.

A big hit with children “Robots that look human tend to be a big hit with children and the elderly,” said Hiroshi Kobayashi, Tokyo University of Science professor and Saya’s developer.

“Children even start crying when they are scolded.”

First developed as a receptionist robot in 2004, Saya was tested in a Tokyo classroom earlier this year with a handful of fifth and sixth graders, although it still can’t do much more than call roll and shout orders like “Be quiet”.

The children had great fun, Kobayashi recalled, tickled when it called out their names.

Still, it’s just remote-controlled by a human watching the interaction through cameras, he said.

Japan and other nations are hopeful robotics will provide a solution to their growing labour shortage problem as populations age. But scientists express concern about using a machine to take care of children and the elderly.

A magician who posted videos online detailing a “trip” he made in a crate aboard a cargo plane from upstate New York to Las Vegas admitted it was an elaborate hoax.

“It was a publicity stunt right from the start,” said Wade Whitcomb of North Syracuse, after federal officials declared the event a hoax.

“The FBI spoke to Whitcomb; he did not ship himself anywhere. We have no further interest in this,” FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said. – AP

Naked officer An off-duty police officer has been arrested after being caught naked in a Hong Kong park wearing only fishnet stockings.

A pair of high-heeled shoes was found next to the 49-year-old senior constable when police were called to the park by an alarmed passerby.

The married constable, who hurriedly put on a jacket before his arrest, had driven to the park to seek thrills by dressing as a woman, according to the South China Morning Post. “He was not under the influence of drink or drugs,” a police source said. – DPA

Jeffrey Gilham, then 23, stabbed his father, mother and brother to death in their Sydney home in 1993, but told police he killed his sibling in a fit of rage after discovering he had murdered their parents.

He pleaded guilty in 1995 to the manslaughter of his 25-year-old brother, escaping with a five-year good behaviour bond.

But Judge Roderick Howie said the crimes had been coldly planned for weeks, with Gilham calculating he “would be pitied as a loving son who reacted in an extraordinary fashion to the scene of horror that confronted him”. He described Gilham, 39, as a “consummate liar and brilliant actor”.

Gilham was eventually charged with the killings in February 2006 after 13 years of campaigning by his paternal uncles who believed that he, and not his brother, had murdered the family.

eens with lower levels of vitamin D have a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes and are significantly more likely to have high blood pressure and blood sugar, a study released yesterday has found.

The researchers also found that on average white teens had vitamin D levels almost twice as high as African-American teens and about 30 per cent higher than MexicanAmerican teens.

“These data on serum vitamin D levels in young people raise some concern about their food choices and even the amount of time they spend in the sunshine,” said Robert Eckel, a past president of the American Heart Association.

How vitamin D helps The body produces vitamin D in response to exposure to the sun and it can also be found in a number of foods such as fortified milk, fish and eggs.

Vitamin D helps to maintain strong bones by aiding in the absorption of calcium and also helps maintain normal blood levels of phosphorus and calcium.

It is a fat-soluble vitamin and low levels are common among those who are overweight or have abdominal obesity.

But even after adjusting for body mass, physical activity levels, age, sex, race or ethnicity and socio-economic levels, researchers still found significant links between low levels of vitamin D and poor health among teens.

In general, highest well-being scores came from states in the West while the

lowest were concentrated in the South.

The happiest congressional districts were some of the wealthiest, while the lowest scores came in some of the poorest.

Jim Harter, a researcher at Gallup, said he was reluctant to explain regional differences without more study, but he suspected that some of the variations are explained by income. For example, when people were asked to examine their status in life now and five years from now, wealthier people tended to score higher.

The survey attempts to measure people’s well-being. It examines their eating and exercise habits, work environment and access to basic necessities, just to name some of the criteria.

The massive survey involved more than 350,000 interviews. Examples of the questions include: Did you smile or laugh a lot yesterday? Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your job or the work you do? Did you eat healthy all day yesterday? Do you feel safe walking alone at night?

ith its naked woman sitting casually on the lawn chatting with a pair of fully dressed men, Edouard Manet’s “Luncheon on the Grass” is baffling even for Western art students. What would an uneducated Thai farmer make of it?

Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook decided to find out in response to a Chinese commentator’s prescription that Asian art needs some sharp criticism from the West if it’s to improve.

She flipped the quotient around and asked a group of

Chiang Mai villagers to assess the Manet, Van Gogh’s “The Midday Sleep”, Renoir’s “Ball at the Moulin de la Galette” and Millet’s “The Gleaners”.

With Araya videotaping them from behind, the farmers perched in front of the well-known European paintings and discussed what they saw in the details.

The videos are part of her Bangkok exhibition called “In This Circumstance, the Sole Object of Attention Should Be the Treachery of the Moon”.

Revered as masterpieces in the art world, the European paintings are valueless to the

farmers, Araya points out.

They react by relating what they see to their own lives.

Renoir’s revelry is rated on food and drink. Van Gogh’s work hints at lottery numbers. The videos force you to re-evaluate the “masterpieces” for yourself and give some further thought to what constitutes art.

The exhibition’s long title is the name of another video, showing people passing each other in opposite directions in a rice field. It’s Araya’s lament that, when we err, we tend to blame the moon – blame anything other than ourselves.

The new ‘Wavefront’ Lasik technology offers new hope to the very short-sighted

or those who wear glasses or contact lenses, perfect vision is the ultimate dream.

Many short-sighted or myopic people are already realising that dream by opting for Lasik (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, a corrective procedure that’s been around for more than a decade, is quick and requires only a few days away from work for the eyes to rest.

Now the Thai Eye Centre has upped the ante in eye surgery with the launch of a faster Lasik machine that takes just two seconds for one-diopter corrections.

The Allegretto Wave Eye-Q from Germany has received US Food and Drug Administration ratings for delivering the fastest laser vision-correction procedures available.

It uses Wavefront Optimised technology at 400Hz repetition rates, reducing treatment time.

Step 1: Corneal flap is created with a microkeratome.

“Sometimes people are nervous and excited when the procedure starts and their eyes are constantly moving, so the faster technology combined with the smaller size of the laser is very helpful,” says ophthalmologist Swasdi Pothikamjorn, owner of the Thai Eye Centre.

Surgical success rates currently stand at 97 per cent on

patients whose myopia is measured at less than eight diopters.

Both government-run and private hospitals currently operate Lasik centres, offering services at prices that range from Bt10,000 to Bt80,000 per eye. The Thai Eye Centre charges Bt50,000 for the procedure with the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q.

“Though Lasik can solve hyperopia and astigmatism, it’s most effective for myopia,” says Dr Swasdi.

Certain people make less than-ideal candidates, so expect the ophthalmologist to check the health of your eye and the thickness of the cornea before accepting you as a patient.

bles help the bowels to function and can prevent many diseases. Most babies are happy to eat fruit as one of their first solid foods because they enjoy the taste. Allergies to fruits are also much lower than to some proteins at such an early age.

But as children grow up, they often refuse to eat, or eat less, fruit and vegetables.

The best advice I can give is to keep trying to encourage your child to eat more fruit and vegetables. Never become convinced that your child dislikes a particular fruit or vegetable because tastes change with age. Even if they refuse the first time, keep try-

ing – they may grow to love the thing they disliked. You should also encourage your children to eat healthily as they become teenagers and young adults.

Tips for parents ■ Set a good example by showing that you enjoy eating fruit and vegetables everyday.

■ Do not make mealtimes stressful.

■ Involve your child when choosing the fruit and vegetables you buy and get them to help in preparation and cooking.

■ Offer fruit or vegetables as a reward for good behaviour or a special achievement instead of sugary sweets or snacks.

afael Benitez believes Liverpool’s Champions League humiliation of Real Madrid has set the stage perfectly for his side to cut Manchester United down to earth in Saturday’s make-or-break Premier League clash.

Benitez admits Liverpool must win at Old Trafford or forget about catching their rivals in the domestic title race, and a Fernando Torres-inspired 4-0 demolition of Real could hardly have been better preparation.

“When you have an important game coming up, if the players play well and score four goals against a top side like Real Madrid you have to be really pleased,” the Spaniard said. “As

a manager maybe it is the best way to approach a big game.”

The return of Fernando Torres from injury helped inspire what was arguably Liverpool’s finest display of the season, although their fans would be guilty of wishful thinking if they were to anticipate United’s defence conceding as many chances as Real’s hapless back four did here on Tuesday evening.

The irrepressible Torres opened the scoring after quarter of an hour, a penalty from Steven Gerrard killed the tie and the Liverpool captain’s second and a late effort from substitute Andrea Dossena sent Benitez’s men into the last eight for the fourth time in his five seasons in

charge.

Adopting an unexpectedly bold approach, Benitez once again demonstrated his tactical nous on the European stage as Real were caught cold by Liverpool’s high-tempo pressing, as well as being unable to cope with the pace and trickery of Torres.

Striker Didier Drogba had a legitimate goal ruled out when his free kick was stopped by Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in their Champions League match on Tuesday. TV replays showed the ball crossed the line and should have been awarded.

Ultimately it wasn’t crucial, as Chelsea drew 2-2 and won 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-finals.

“I think technology must be brought in, so we don’t have the dispute, yes or no,” Hiddink said.

“We had it very early on in my career, in the 80s. My team PSV Eindhoven and Philips did some tests and they went well, but the people who were deciding didn’t want to know. Now the technology is so perfect that it has to be done.”

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri agreed.

“There’s a lot of talk about this technological aid.

They’ve done it in tennis and sometimes the human eye cannot always be right. I think that an instrument like the one they use in tennis would make things better.”

ayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann says his side are determined to make their record-breaking win over Sporting Lisbon count as they prepare for the Champions League quarterfinals.

Bayern hammered Lisbon 7-1 at Munich’s Allianz Arena on Tuesday night to win the Round of 16 tie with a staggering 12-1 aggregate scoreline after winning 5-0 in Lisbon a fortnight ago.

omen’s world No 2 golfer Yani Tseng is mulling playing for a foreign country because she is unhappy about the neglect of the sport in her native Taiwan.

Tseng’s father Tseng Maohsin yesterday confirmed a news report from the United Daily News that lack of respect for the sport in her home country, and not money, has prompted the move.

The report yesterday said Tseng is unhappy because Taiwan does not take golf seriously and has not responded for her call to hold a LPGA tournament in the country, even though LPGA has already approved the event.

Tseng has been invited to play for China and has been asked to give Beijing an answer before the end of the year, the United Daily News said.

Her father confirmed the report in an interview with cable TV channel ETTV. “What makes us angry is that even at your home, you are not valued. When Singapore invited her, they let her fly first class and stay in the best hotel. But when she returns to Taiwan, her golf club and hand-carry luggage weighed over ten kilo, and our airline wanted to charge her for excess baggage,” he said.

The news on Tseng came a few days after sports officials confirmed that Taiwan’s top pool player Wu Chia-ching is considering a move to Singapore after talks for increased pay with Taiwan’s billiard association collapsed.

Yesterday, Government spokesman Su Jun-pin promised that the island would improve conditions for athletes to prevent them from defecting to other countries.

“We need to create a better environment and to give them higher prize money,” he told reporters.

British driver Lewis Hamilton was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II for his achievement in becoming the youngest Formula One champion in history.

THESPORT Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard saluted a “fantastic team performance” after his side thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 on Tuesday.

Already 1-0 up from the first leg, Liverpool advanced stylishly to the quarter-finals, suggesting their post-Christmas wobble may be over.

For Madrid, this was their biggestever Champions League defeat.

“The first 30 minutes we were awesome,” Gerrard said.

“We got the job done, and then in the second half it was just about seeing it out.”

Liverpool trail Premier League leaders Manchester United by seven points – and have played a game more – but could close the gap as they face their north-west rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“First and foremost, it’s about enjoying tonight,” Gerrard said.
