fter years of standing up for others, the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) has a battle of its own to fight. “We help protect other people’s human rights but at the moment we can’t protect our own,” says an NHRC staff representative, voicing concerns about a working environment staff say is dangerous. For months, officials have been barraged with dust, fumes and noise as their offices are constructed around them in a new government complex on Chaeng Wattana Road. Today, they are meeting with the construction firm Dhanarak Asset Development in a desperate effort to find ways of tackling the problems.

Consumer Protection Board and the National Health Security Office.
Ordered to stop Last month, construction workers were ordered to
stop work in areas near offices and reduce noise and dust. “Though the company has implemented those measures, we along with officials in other organisations still feel our health is being affected,” says Ging, citing symptoms that colleagues have never suffered before. “We want the company to provide health check-ups through a mobile unit for everybody working inside the complex and more ventilation,” the group said.
Fair pay, please Minimum wage rates for skilled workers will be fully enforced next year, a senior official at the Department of Skills Development said yesterday. So far, rates for 30 out of some 100 occupations are in place. The department’s deputy chief Prapan Monthakantiwong said employers who were still ignoring the rates more than two years after their introduction would face punishment. Three levels of minimum wage – Bt250, Bt300 and Bt500 per day – cover different trades.
No water shortage The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) yesterday said it was confident Bangkok would not suffer water shortages this drought season. MWA governor Charoen Chaikittisilp said that the Royal Irrigation Department would take 750 million cubic metres from the Chao Phya River and 220 million at the Mae Khlong Dam, with more available if needed.

Rain testifies in US court South Korean pop star and actor Rain testified that he had every intention of performing in Hawaii and other US states, but a series of abrupt concert cancellations were out of his control. “I was not the person that cancelled the concerts,” he said through an interpreter. “I would love to perform in North America.” Rain made his first appearance in a US district court in a room packed with giddy female fans in a civil trial stemming from the cancellation of his scheduled June 15, 2007, concert in Honolulu. Hawaii-based Click Entertainment alleges Rain and his managers breached a contract and defrauded it of US$500,000 (Bt18 million) in licensing fees, plus nearly $1 million in other expenses to stage the event. Rain said he didn’t know why his concert was cancelled, until much later when he was told by his handlers that the stage was not adequate and there were security concerns. Rain also said he wasn’t aware how much Click lost or how much he earned in 2007. – AP
ANNA NICOLE’S PSYCHIATRIST POSTS BAIL She conspired with another doctor to give model thousands of pills A P , Los Angeles
P
sychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich surrendered to face charges of excessively prescribing drugs to Anna Nicole Smith before the former model’s overdose death at 39. Eroshevich turned herself in at the Van Nuys police station in Los Angeles, said police spokeswoman Rosario Herrera. She was released several hours later after posting US$20,000 (Bt718,000) bail,
according to her attorney Adam Braun. After a lengthy investigation by the attorney-general and other state and federal agencies, Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Eroshevich last week with conspiring with another doctor, Sandeep Kapoor, and Smith’s lawyerturned-boyfriend Howard K Stern to provide Smith with thousands of prescription pills. California Attorney-General
Jerry Brown said the doctors wrote prescriptions in fictitious names and prescribed unwarranted amounts of highly addictive medications to Smith, knowing that she was an addict. Brown described Stern as the “principal enabler” in the alleged conspiracy. Stern and Kapoor turned themselves in last week and were each freed on $20,000 bond. Braun has said Eroshevich was only protecting Smith’s privacy by writing prescriptions in false names and did not intend to commit fraud.
A Philippine man nearly caused an air disaster in an eastern city when he used an airport runway to teach his girlfriend to drive just as a passenger plane was about to land. A Cebu Pacific Air flight carrying 80 passengers was descending at the airport in Legazpi City when the pilot quickly pulled up after he saw a passenger van moving fast on the runway. Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal said the van was driven by the city aviation chief’s son, who was teaching his girlfriend how to drive. “That van could have turned us into a fireball had I not successfully aborted landing,” Rosal quoted the French pilot as saying. – DPA
Lohan free A judge withdrew an arrest warrant for actress Lindsay Lohan for driving under the influence in 2007, saying the starlet had been complying with the terms of her probation. Beverly Hills judge Marsha Revel had ordered the arrest of the 22-year-old star, saying she had not been meeting the conditions set. But on Monday the judge said after meeting with Lohan’s lawyer that she “has been complying with certain aspects of the programme that the programme was unaware of”. – AFP

eal-life couple and singers with different bands – Walailuck “Koi” Musickapodoke of pop rockers Saturday Seiko and Anusorn “Yong” Maneethed of bossa nova pop outfit Armchair – have joined up professionally for the first time for a travel book and CD they’ve called “Koi-Yong and Friends: My Travellers”. “It’s not just a photo travel book that also contains songs, music videos and travel experiences. It’s our very heart and soul,” says Koi, during the launch party at B2S CentralWorld. “It’s a private and special gift to our fans.” Yong says the idea for a travel
book with songs came to mind while he was chatting on MSN with his bandmate, keyboardist Atit “Aun” Sornsongkram. Aun, it seems, was explaining how he had fallen for the charms of Paris on a trip there during his student days in Germany. Yong decided to act on the idea after Armchair sold 1,000 copies of their single album “My Traveller” at the Fat Festival. “Aun said that Paris can stoke the fires of love. We went there to see if he was right,” says Yong. “I love reading and Koi loves photography and we both love travelling.”
A little help The couple invited a few friends to take the trip with them, including photographer Prach Sirithorn. On their return, Yong and Koi set to work, spending six months putting together the 230-page book. It comes in an attractive box, designed by Yong, with a picture of
the two on the Paris metro, and includes lots of great photographs of the couple posing at the Eiffel Tower, Musee du Louvre and Versailles Palace. There’s also narration on the City of Lights, tourist information and a pinhole camera. The CD features eight tracks, including two versions of “Khuen Klab Me” sung separately by the couple, “My Traveller” and “Khae Pieng Wan Nee”. Stylish Nonsense’s Wannarit “Pok” Pongprayoon acts as music director and Koi and Yong are the producers. “If you listen to the songs while looking at the pictures and reading our words, you’ll feel like you’re with us on our travels,” says Koi. “The music is in the style of the late ’80s,” says Yong. “And the book is rich in emotions.” > > T R AV E L A L O N G The book with CD inside costs Bt490 and is available at B2S.

itsarat “Tae” Sukwatanasiri, one of Grammy’s newest artists, has very clear ideas about where he’s headed. “I want to sing as well as Phi Bird [superstar Thongchai McIntyre] but I don’t expect to be as famous as he is,” the clean-cut youngster tells Daily Xpress. “I admire Bird’s singing style Tae and have great respect for the way he thinks.” Tae has wanted to be a singer since he was a child. He’s just released his debut album – “Thi Rak Khong Khrai Sak Khon” – and the first four cuts have become instant hits. Tune into any radio station and you’ll hear “Khwam Song Jam”, “Khwam Wang Lek Lek”
and “Rak Kan Khrang Nueng … Khid Thueng Talod Pai”, the Thai version of Malaysia’s pop singer and songwriter Rynn Lim’s “All About Love”, as well as the title track. “My voice is best suited to easy-listening numbers, the kind of songs that have strong, deep lyrics and beautiful melodies. I can put the emotions across because they’re based on personal experience,” he says. “On ‘Khwam Song Jam’, I remembered how sad I felt when I heart was broken while ‘Khwam Wang Lek Lek’ made me think of falling in love.” And despite his protestations, Tae may soon be as famous as Bird. Grammy enjoys a cooperative agreement with a Malaysian record label so our southern neighbours are likely to be able to chill to Tae’s silken vocals before too long.

Doubling up for love Two veteran crooners add another show to satisfy their legions of fans
This ultimate cover album, produced by the charity organisation of the same name, brings together 15 of the hottest artists in today’s music industry and gets them to perform covers of much-loved numbers by artists of the 1960s and ’70s. That makes for some very interesting pairings. Duffy turns Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” into a new spiritual standard, and Estelle gives a different though no less funky rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. TV on the Radio sticks to tried and tested waters with David Bowie’s “Heroes”, as does Elbow with U2’s “Running to Stand Still”. Not even Beck tries to improve on perfection with Bob Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”. An interesting buy and well worth the outlay.
Music For an Accelerated Culture Hadouken! (Surface Noise)
The Leeds-based band puts out their debut album, a fun outing with lots of techno and dance beats over electronica enhanced by James Smith’s singing and rapping. It mixes youthful aggression with grime music, crossing between Klaxons and Lady Sovereign. “Crank It Up” is an amusing funny song about today’s consumer behaviour in the music industry, while “Spend Your Life” dwells on the band’s own downloads. Others tracks well worth the listen are “Liquid Lives”, which throbs with dark techno, and the ballad “Driving Nowhere”.

By the end of this year, she adds, the cooperative will have a far wider distribution through Francine butcher shops and kiosks. And the product-tracing system is to be extended, with the help of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, to more farms and slaughterhouses. Sompop Chatraporn, director of the BMA Health Department’s Veterinary Public Health Division, says the idea will “in the near future” be shared with any small- and medium-sized enterprise that wants to raise standards. Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer
By Eugenia Last
Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
Today’s Birthday: Don’t let confusion bog you down and stop you from getting ahead. There will be lots of hidden matters to contend with, so ask questions before you make a decision. Keeping a low profile but a high work ethic will help you maintain your status and emotional wellbeing. ARIES ***** March 21-April 19 Problems with officialdom should be taken care fast. Don’t let the wrong impression stand in your way. Do something nice for your partner or, if single, get out and meet someone new. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 Don’t mix emotions with finances. Beware of someone is playing on your good nature. You can make suggestions but start paying and your relationship will change.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★
GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 The opportunities you get will not sit right with some of the people you know. Jealousy will play a role so be careful not to give anyone ammunition to use against you. Expect added responsibilities. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 Sit back and let the changes going on around you fall into place. Lashing out emotionally before you actually know what the end result is will be futile and will cost you dearly. LEO ***** July 23-Aug. 22 Your outgoing nature will open up doors to new partnerships that can enhance your personal and professional position. Put on the charm but try not to lead anyone on emotionally. VIRGO ***** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 You have plenty to be thankful for and lots of plans to make your life better. Alterations to your living quarters will turn out well. A chance to engage in an emotional encounter will leave you wanting more.
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY
LIBRA ** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 A push will make you decide quickly what you should do about a troublesome relationship. Either set the record straight or pull out. You need new avenues to meet people with common interests. SCORPIO **** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 How you earn your living will take on a whole new meaning. You can launch something you’ve been working on to a totally new application. The way you approach someone will make the difference. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Don’t confront anyone before you have thought matters through. Love is on the line and so are your emotions and your future. Avoid meddlers and stay out of everyone else’s business as well.
Queen Latifah Actor Peter Graves is 83. Country singer Charley Pride is 71. Actor Kevin Dobson is 66. Singer Irene Cara is 50. Singer-actress Vanessa Williams is 46. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) is 43. Singer Miki Berenyi is 42. Actress Queen Latifah is 39. Comedian Dane Cook is 37. Singer Devin Lima (LFO) is 32. Singer Adam Levine (Maroon 5) is 30.
CAPRICORN *** Dec. 22-Jan. 19 A change of plans will suit your needs but someone you care about may not be happy with the decision you make. Decide if it is worth putting up with the negativity. AQUARIUS **** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Getting involved in a group that will help you meet people will be good for you. Love is in the stars and opportunities to show others what you have to offer will lead to bigger and better things. PISCES ** Feb. 19-March 20 You’ll be confused, causing you to make some mistakes. Deal with anyone who is trying to make you look bad before he or she has a chance to do any real damage. Your reputation may be at risk.

Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos says he is ready to move back to Real Madrid from Turkish side Fenerbahce if the Spanish club’s former president Florentino Perez returns. “If Florentino comes and says ‘Roberto, come back’, I will have to think about it and talk about it. I have never said I won’t come back,” he said. Real “is the team of my life and I would be lying if I said that I don’t want to go.”

ot often does the person sitting at home see more than the spectator in the stadium, but it happened on Saturday when Liverpool beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. A couple of minutes before the kick-off, while the television camera was lingering on the teams lining up in the tunnel, something happened that gave a fascinating portent of the upset to come. We had just learnt that Alvaro Arbeloa, the Liverpool rightback, had tweaked a hamstring during the warm-up and would not be playing. Rafael Benitez had reconfigured his defence, moving Jamie Carragher from centre-back to fill Arbeloa’s position and bringing in Sami Hyypia alongside Martin Skrtel. In the light of the lengthy preparations that would have gone into a fixture of this magnitude –
not the match of the season, perhaps, but a very important one to both sides – this represented a serious adjustment. What the roving camera in the Old Trafford tunnel showed was a little huddle at the rear of the Liverpool line. At the centre of a group of defenders Javier Mascherano was delivering an impassioned speech, complete with heated gesticulations. It was the sort of thing one might have expected to see from Steven Gerrard, the team captain, or from the vastly experienced Hyypia, his predecessor. Two hours later, however, Mascherano had given a display confirming my belief that he rivals Claude Makelele as the best exponent in modern British football of an art to which, even now, too little importance is attached. Gerrard and Fernando Torres, who ran the United defence
ragged and scored a goal apiece, won the battle of the headlines. But it was Mascherano who carved out the space and time in which they could play, as he had done the previous Tuesday night when Liverpool produced the second of their great performances of the season in routing Real Madrid. The first of those great performances came at Stamford Bridge in October, when Liverpool’s midfield squeezed the life out of Chelsea and ended the west London club’s run of 86 home league matches without defeat. The third came, of course, on Saturday – when, significantly, United took the field without an equivalent player. Mascherano’s excellence was a thread running through all three games.
Calmness and excellence I first saw him in 2004, when he was 20 years old and winning an Olympic gold medal with an Argentina squad including Carlos Tevez and Gabriel Heinze. No one in Britain pays much attention to the Olympic

“Johnno can be a scary man sometimes when you walk back in the dressing room so the best thing is to play well and get a win and stay on the right side of him... There has been frustration in the camp but that has also led to excitement. We were itching to get on the field to put things right and prove people wrong.”
“I wore it because in case your swim suit bursts, it’s nice to have a double. I have a regular swim suit under my performance suit because it makes me feel more secure and it covers more of my chest. It’s not something that makes you swim faster.”

Mascherano was superb in the drubbing of Real Madrid mid-week, then Manchester United at the weekend.
Benitez’s many expensive acquisitions, and the coltish striker is undoubtedly a wonderfully compelling performer who adds a sense of possibility to any match in which he takes part. But my choice would be Mascherano, a player who rose above a set of tangled transfer dealings and above the inability of his first English club to understand exactly what it is that he adds to a team. Benitez could see what Pardew failed to spot, and spent 18m on a player whose contribution is proving to be priceless.
Robinho has been described behind the scenes as a “passenger” and his future has been discussed at length in Manchester and Abu Dhabi. Although he has been outstanding at times in home matches, Hughes has become more and more “exasperated” by his inability to get through to a player who became the most expensive footballer in Britain when he signed for £32.5m last September. City have reluctantly taken the decision to listen to offers for Robinho at the end of the season, although Hughes is still open-minded and hopes the player will show a greater desire. Failing that, one plan is to offer him as bait to Chelsea in a possible player-plus-money exchange for John Terry despite the England captain’s insistence that he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge for the remainder of his career. City’s information is different, Hughes having heard from a number of sources that Terry will listen to what the club’s owners have to say. City would be willing to double his current salary and have been encouraged by various messages that have been left for Hughes. Another option that City are considering would be to offer Robinho to Bayern Munich in a possible exchange for Franck Ribery.

football tournament, for the simple and patently inadequate reason that there are no British representatives. Other nations, however, take it extremely seriously, making it a good opportunity to see young talent on the way up. In Athens, Mascherano, who had made his senior debut for River Plate less than a year earlier, sat in front of the defence and controlled the traffic with a calmness and technical excellence reminiscent of Barcelona’s Pep Guardiola. Four years later in Beijing he was doing much the same thing, this time as an over-age player in a squad including Lionel Messi. The impression was the same, and so was the result: another gold medal for a man who by this time had moved from River Plate to Corinthians in Brazil and thence to England, first to West Ham – where Alan Pardew saw fit to give him only seven appearances in half a season – before finding a home at Anfield. obinho is facing a major challenge to keep his place at Manchester City after angering his manager, Mark Hughes, with his increasingly erratic performances in the club’s away matches. City have not won on their travels in the Premier League since their second away game of the season at Sunderland and, according to informed sources, Robinho’s poor form is regarded as a “significant” factor. Hughes is so disappointed, it has emerged, he is now giving consideration to dropping Robinho when Martin Petrov is fit again after five months out with a knee injury. Petrov has been cleared to step up his training after seeing a specialist, with a view to being available to challenge for Robinho’s place on the left side of attack in the next two or three weeks. Robinho’s performance at Chelsea on Sunday has attracted strong criticism but Hughes has suspected for some time that the Brazilian’s displays indicate he is not fully committed to the club. Uppermost in his mind is that City, with only eight points away from home this season, still have to visit Arsenal, Everton, Manchester United and Tottenham.

ormer Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock could pursue a personal compensation claim against West Ham United, according to newspaper reports yesterday. Warnock, currently Crystal Palace boss, resigned as manager of Sheffield United in May 2007, three days after their relegation from the Premier League. Had West Ham not fielded Argentina forward Carlos Tevez in contravention of Premier League rules, Warnock believes United would still be in the premiership – and with the money and status that confers. West Ham were fined £5.5 million by Premier League tribunal, then reached a £25million out of court settlement with Sheffield United on Monday. A joint investigation by the Premier League and Football Association in ongoing, and Warnock warned that even that might not be the end of it. “I’ll be looking into this now,” he told the Daily Mail. “I just wanted to see the club’s case out of the way first. As far as I’m concerned, I should still be a Premier League manager. And I think the players have a case, too. “It [the settlement] justifies what we’ve said all along.”

Playing at home and with plenty of pressure, the fourthseeded pair performed at nowhere near their best. Their opponents decimated the Thai’s serves and net play in front of fans at Rama Gardens Hotel. “We were worried this might happen. We pushed ourselves too much in the hope of bringing out our best but we just fell apart,” said a downhearted Sonchat, who together with his brother has collected three Challenger trophies this season. “I missed from the baseline

Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana discuss tactics yesterday. and Sonchat missed at the net. We had some opportunities but didn’t take them. They served and returned so well,” bemoaned Sanchai, who hoped for a better performance in Nakhon Ratchasima next week. “We must change our attitude and think of this as just another tournament. If we are still pressurised by the thought that we must play well at home, we will
lose our focus,” Sanchai said. In the first-round singles action, the comeback trail of former world No 3 Guillermo Coria of Argentina was cut short by Harel Levy of Israel who easily trounced the unfit Argentine 6-3 6-2. Most of seeded players made it safely through to the second round. Top seed Andreas Beck of Germany, No 86 in the world,
cleared his hurdle with a straight-set victory over Bjorn Rehnquist of Sweden 6-3 6-4. “I’m happy to win the first round under difficult conditions. It’s hot for all players here and only those who can focus all week will have any chance,” said Beck, a big admirer of former world No 1 Roger Federer. Second seed Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea, supported by his young daughter and wife, had no problem easing past American Tim Smyczek 6-1 6-4. Third seed Go Soeda of Japan won a three-set battle with Ukraine’s Sergei Bubka, a winner in Kyoto last week, 6-1 5-7 6-2, while fifth seed Mathieu Montcourt of France dismissed Russian Alexandre Kudryavstev 6-4 3-6 6-1. Indian Somdev Devvarman was the only seeded victim, the tournament’s No 8 falling to Martin Slanar of Austria 3-6 6-4 4-6. But fellow countryman Rohan Bopana advanced with a 6-3 7-6 (9-7) win over American Rajeev Ram.

England eye O’Neill? BLOOMBERG, London
T
he Football Association wants Aston Villa’s Martin O’Neil as England manager when Fabio Capello decides to leave the post, the Sun reported. New FA chief executive officer Ian Watmore likes the way O’Neill is producing so many English players, the Sun said. Watmore thinks Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson would both be excellent choices, but is ruling them out on the grounds they wouldn’t take the job, the newspaper said. O’Neill was snubbed for the post in 2006 after failing to impress in his interview, the Sun said. England picked Steve McClaren and then fired him in November 2007 after failing to qualify for last year’s European championship. Capello has a 4 1/2year contract running through Euro 2012, which contains an escape clause after next year’s World Cup, the Sun said.

BREATHING FIRE ‘Dragon Ladies’ take women’s tour by storm AFP, Singapore
group of five women dubbed the Dragon Ladies are taking the US LPGA Tour by storm, breathing new fire into a sport that needed a boost with the retirement of Annika Sorenstam. Rarely does a country produce so many athletes who mature into world-class competitors simultaneously, but that is what has happened in South Korea. They are all 20 years old – born in 1988 in the Chinese Year of the Dragon – and all broke through last year on the prestigious United States’ Tour. South Korea has a history of producing quality women golfers – 10 of the world’s current top 30 are Korean – since still-playing trailblazer Se Ri Pak set the standard a decade ago with two Major wins in her

But the current crop, who are also known as ‘Se Ri’s kids”, are seen as the best ever, capable of dominating world golf for years. World No 4 Shin Ji-yai is arguably the most talented, winning the HSBC Champions in Singapore this month for her fourth LPGA victory. But the others – Choi Nayeon, Park In-bee, Kim In-
kyung and Oh Ji-young – are not far behind. Park has already won a Major (US Open) as has Shin (British Open), with Kim and Oh posting their maiden LPGA victories last year while Choi pushed Taiwan’s Tseng Yani all the way in the race to be named 2008 Rookie of the Year. There are others, such as Lee Seon-hwa and Ji Eun-hi, who
are a year or two older but like the Dragon Ladies were inspired by Pak’s exploits. “We grew up together, trained together, and we all came of age last year. It’s an exciting period for Korean women’s golf,” said Park. Shin, who has already overtaken Hall of Famer Pak as the most prolific winner on the Korean Tour, said her veteran compatriot, who has won 24 times on the US LPGA, was responsible for inspiring so many young South Koreans. “We all watched Se Ri and started golf. Before there weren’t that many juniors but after Se Ri everyone came,” she said, adding that the class of ’88 was particularly special. “Our junior teams were very strong. We won almost every tournament,” she said. Most of the Korean players attribute their dominance to the work ethic in their home country, which sees them practice, practice, practice, as well as remaining calm under pressure.

weden’s Therese Alshammar broke her own 50-metre butterfly world record at the Australian swimming Championships yesterday but was later disqualified by Swimming Australia for wearing two swimsuits. World champion Alshammar set a time of 25.44 seconds in the morning qualifying heats to take 0.02 of a second off the record 25.46 she set at Barcelona, Spain on June 13, 2007. But officials later discovered that Alshammar was wearing two suits in the race and ruled that the time would not stand. Swimming Australia said that under swimming governing body FINA’s new rules that were ratified last weekend, and Swimming Australia’s rules instituted last year, Alshammar would be disqualified because it states that swimmers may only wear one suit.
