he millions of low-income earners being handed “Help the nation” cheques from tomorrow are being targeted by campaigns launched in thousands of stores. If cashed at a commercial bank, each cheque is worth Bt2,000, but that value can be much higher if it’s spent directly at shops, department stores and entertainment complexes. “I’m going to spend the money where I find the best offers,” says 26-year-old Wipapan Nakbart.

The company employee is now hunting for shops with the most interesting promotions. Hoping to boost the sagging economy with the free cash, the government is finding that businesses like Pizza Hut, Carrefour, Big C, Tesco Lotus and CP Fresh Mart are playing along by encouraging spending sprees with attractive offers.

cheque at her office tomorrow and taking advantage of the deals. “I’ll use it to buy groceries at Tesco Lotus and Big C and a few books at Nanmeebooks,” she says. However, not all low-income earners are planning a shopping spree. “I will buy basic necessities and save what’s left of the money in the bank. I’m not interested in department stores’ campaigns because I have simple needs,” says Wassana Jantuek, a cleaner. Security-guard Jit Petchkeaw is full of praise for the government’s initiative, and the store promotions have caught his eye. “But I work so hard that I really have no time to shop,” he says.

FREEDOM FROM FEAR Female prisoners learn breast self-examination in a project that’s giving underprivileged women power over cancer By Wannapa Phetdee DAILY XPRESS

M

DAILY XPRESS/WATCHARACHAI KLAIPONG

ost Thai women do not know how to carry out a self-examination for breast cancer, and many don’t get the chance to learn – especially those detained in prison. However, some have just been given access to breast health education, thanks to the efforts of a volunteer group. The Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCs) ran awareness and training sessions over the past two days for about 800 prisoners at the Thon Buri Women’s Correctional Institute. The goal was to show them how to self-examine every month in order to cut their risks of falling prey to the often fatal disease. “We had never done the examinations ourselves because we didn’t know how. It’s very useful,” said one prisoner.

Fun without worries Nurses and volunteers taught the inmates about breast cancer, before showing them a video on how to feel for tell-tale lumps then letting them try it out on their own breasts. They also had to detect lumps in model breasts. “We make it fun and we take away the fear of breast cancer. We make them understand why it’s important,” said Marcia Hefetz, chairperson of BBCs. “These prisoners will be able to protect themselves from breast cancer if they can detect it early,” added Areerat Thimthong, director of the institute. Hefetz said the project

started last September in Suphan Buri, with the aim of teaching self-examination to underprivileged women in rural areas. The volunteers held training for health workers in clinics and hospitals, and then had them train villagers.

Lop Buri, Ayutthaya also Meanwhile, BBCs’ next target will be women in Lop Buri and Ayutthaya provinces. As the project is expanding rapidly, there is a budget short-

fall, even though BBCs has been funded by foundations, a cancer society, private companies and individuals. With the high cost of Bt80,000 per training session and the need for more volunteers, Hefetz called for donations and more helpers so that the group could run the project in Lop Buri and Ayutthaya. BBCs needs Bt2 million for this year’s operations, as well as companies to sponsor the printing of instruction books.

Chantaburi’s future glows in the forest Fireflies, trekking and canoeing are part of a project to conserve the province’s mangroves The Veru River Mangrove Forest Learning Centre’s firefly park will become Chantaburi’s hottest attraction if the Department of Marine and

Coastal Resources has its way. Department chief Samran Rakchat said yesterday that the planned reforestation projects, trekking routes and canoe trips

would make the centre the eastern region’s hub for mangrove rehabilitation.

Forest life Visitors will be taught about the life cycle of the firefly and the rich bio-diversity of the man-

groves. Also, environmentallyfriendly fishing methods will be taught to local workers to deal with the damage done by shrimp farming. The long-term plan is to make the centre a model from which other communities can

learn to tackle their own environmental issues, said Samran. His department will also build a network of local youths to learn and assist volunteers in conservation and planning for the sustainable use of natural resources.

M

ore than 1.7 million Facebook users have joined a protest against another redesign of the popular social networking site, in one of the biggest consumer revolts seen in the online world. As of midday on Monday, the Facebook group called Petition Against the New Facebook had 1,727,394 disgruntled members, while a Facebook-sponsored poll on the redesign had received more than 1.2 million votes, with just 75,000

approving the new look. The redesign was foisted on the site’s 175 million worldwide users late last week in a bid by Facebook to better compete with microblogging sites such as Twitter while also making its pages more advertiser friendly.

Limited features Opponents of the new design say it clutters their home page with updates from people they don’t care about, while also limiting the number of fea-

tures available to users. Facebook has acknowledged the criticism, but so far has declined to take any action. “The new Facebook home page is one step in the continued evolution of the site, designed to give people more ways to share and filter all types of content, such as status updates, photos, videos, notes and more,” the company said in a statement. “We are listening carefully to what people are saying about the new home page through a variety of channels and are committed to using it to inform people about how we build and improve the site for everyone.”

Judge orders FDA to let 17-year-olds use ‘Plan B’ A P , New York

T

he Food and Drug Administration let politics cloud its judgement when it denied teenage girls overthe-counter access to the Plan B morning-after pill, a federal judge said as he ordered the FDA to let 17-year-olds obtain the medication. In a thorough denunciation of former president George W Bush’s administration, US district judge Edward Korman blasted the FDA’s handling of the issue, saying it had “repeatedly and unreasonably” delayed issuing a decision on the medication. The morning-after pill is a source of tension for social conservatives who held great

sway in the Bush administration and who believed the pill was tantamount to abortion. The ruling said the FDA in several instances had delayed issuing a ruling for suspect reasons. Korman ordered the FDA to make Plan B available to 17year-olds without a prescription under the same conditions as Plan B is now available to women over the age of 18. He said his order must be complied with within 30 days. The FDA said it is reviewing the judge’s decision. Women’s groups said it’s unlikely that the Obama administration would appeal. Social conservatives decried the ruling.

The joint study, begun in 1995 by the National Institutes of Health and seniors group AARP, followed more than half a million men and women between ages 50 and 71, who filled out a food frequency questionnaire estimating their

Over the study period, 47,976 men and 23,276 women died. The one fifth of men and women who ate the most red meat – a median of 62.5 grams per 1,000 calories per day – had a higher mortality rate than the one-fifth who consumed the least – 9.8 grams per thousand calories. Cancer-causing compounds are known to form during high-temperature cooking of meat, the report stated, and meat is a major source of saturated fat, which has been linked to certain cancers.

YouTube video by an enterprising 14-year-old showcasing the talents of his laid-off dad, a Florida-based marketing specialist, has scored thousands of hits and several job interviews. When the economy started nosediving Mark Gullet tried to prepare his son for the worst, explaining that millions were losing their jobs around the nation. Then on March 12 Gullet was laid off as a vice president in the marketing department for the National Hockey League Tampa Bay Lightning team. Undeterred, his fourteenyear-old son Ben got down to work and came up with the idea of creating a YouTube video as a promotional tool to help his father find work. Ben wrote the video’s script, which his father then edited. “Then he [Ben] worked on it on his lap-top computer at the kitchen table, laying down the music,” Mark Gullett said.

The result is the YouTube video entitled “Mark By Ben”, which has received over 59,000 hits. “We had thousands of hits from Brazil and, for some reason, now we’re getting hundreds of hits from Switzerland,” said the proud dad. And as an added result he has some job interviews lined up this week.

The owners of Australia’s Big Pineapple have offered a tart response to the tourist attraction’s inclusion on a state list of protected places. The Queensland Heritage Council placed the 16-metre fibreglass pineapple on its register Monday, ranking it alongside the state’s top historic buildings and cultural sites. But the owners have vowed to appeal the decision, saying it was a “huge inconvenience and financial disadvantage”. Big Pineapple general manager John Edwards said the heritage listing covered the whole tourist complex, which includes a wildlife sanctuary and building. “Under the listing, I can’t pull up a carpet or put on a coat of paint without... approval,” he said. “If it was just the pineapple structure itself, we would have no problems with it at all.” – AFP

Two Komodo dragons mauled a fruit-picker to death in eastern Indonesia, police and witnesses said yesterday, the latest in a string of attacks on humans by the world’s largest lizard species. Police Seargeant Kosmas Jalang said 31-year-old Muhamad Anwar was attacked on Komodo, one of four islands where the giant reptile is found in the wild, minutes after he fell out of a sugar-apple tree.

A lorry driver accused of killing six people while driving drunk knelt in front of his victims’ relatives to apologise. Law Siu-kuen, 41, knelt in front of family members for more than 10 seconds after appearing in court to face a charge of dangerous driving causing death. Law, whose blood-alcohol level was allegedly almost seven times the legal limit when he crashed into a taxi carrying the six men, reportedly told the relatives as he knelt on the street outside the court: “I am really sorry. I know it was a big mistake.” Relatives hurled abuse back at Law, telling him: “You are a murderer. It’s useless for you to apologise.” – DPA

attaya’s population was suddenly boosted by half a million people last weekend when the International Music Festival filled three stages with pop, rock, hip-hop and look thung performers. The Tourism Authority of Thailand reckoned the event, between ticket salses and several hundred stalls selling food and other goods, resulted in Bt700 million changing hands. The annual Pattaya music fest was bigger than ever this year thanks to the inclusion of artists from across Asia, especially

South Korean boy band SHINee and the all-female Girls’ Generation. Its success was a bit of a surprise, given that the event now has competition in the form of the Central Festival Pattaya Beach at the new shopping complex on the shore. The competitive factor seemed evident in the music festival picking up Singha Beer as a sponsor. There were more stages for pop and rock in front of Royal Garden Plaza and for house and trance on the beach nearby. Along the beach street, tourists enjoyed the shopping and drinking, and some even danced.

Unfortunately, some preferred to brawl – a few ornery types leaving the rock stage at Bali Hai Cape.

Hip-hop puppetry The opening ceremony was amazing, with puppets from the Aksra Theatre putting on a hip-hop show. The highlights this year were the duets between Thai and foreign artists – Vietrio with Australia’s Cirque de Freak, GolfMike and South Korea’s Mighty Mouth, Tae Witsarat with Malaysia’s Rynn Lim, Shin Shinawut teamed up with China’s Kym Jin Sha, and Bie the Star matched to Hong Kong’s Kenny Kwan.

South Korean acts, such as Girls’ Generation, were a major draw this year.

Cook it simply on one side with a squeeze of lemon juice. The technique should work for less-expensive farmraised salmon as well. You’ll love this simple preparation.

Heat a non-stick frying pan. Place the salmon in the pan, skin-side down, pour the lemon juice over the salmon, add the salt, and cook for about six minutes over medium heat until the skin is crispy. Cut a slice to determine the degree of cooking you desire, such as medium-rare – pink at the centre – which preserves most of the natural taste. Season, if you like, with a dash of extra-virgin olive oil and a sprig of fresh thyme. Serve immediately.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer

By Eugenia Last

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Today’s Birthday: Don’t get all worked up over nothing. It’s the thinking Aries who will win this year and have others marvelling at the way you can magically make things happen. Your ability to drum up support and enthusiasm will help you finish what you start. ARIES *** March 21-April 19 You need to get rid of anything or anyone holding you back. Organisation will be required to fulfil responsibilities that you promised you would take care of. Clear the way for a new beginning. TAURUS **** April 20-May 20 Put your skills to work for you. Offer services that you have perfected over the years. Stick to your budget and do not give in to sales that promise you the impossible.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★

GEMINI ** May 21-June 20 You will be disappointed if you bank everything you’ve got on a plan that isn’t foolproof. Promises made will be broken due to circumstances beyond your control. Be clear about what you have to offer. CANCER ***** June 21-July 22 Separate business from pleasure if you want things to run smoothly. A love relationship may need an adjustment before it’s too late to do anything about something you have grown to dislike. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 It’s time to expand your awareness, try new things and open up possibilities you have never considered. Getting together with people who have similar interests will help you attract love.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Don’t be tempted to spend your cash on something you really don’t need. A tight budget will allow you to save for something you really want or that can help you get ahead in the future. LIBRA *** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 You need to network with as many people as possible about your plans for the future. Someone will take an interest and help you find the perfect outlet for your ideas. SCORPIO ***** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 You have more to offer than you realise, so put your talents to work for you. A change of plans will be your advantage. An honest, emotional attempt to get your way will work, so share your feelings. SAGITTARIUS ** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Before you move forward with anyone or with a deal you are involved in, make sure everyone - including yourself - is there for the right reasons. It will be easy for something to go wrong and anger to set in.

A different job will help give you some ideas about where to head, spiritually and vocationally. AQUARIUS *** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 You can’t say yes to everyone and manage to get the things you have to get done finished. Make suggestions but don’t give up cash or precious time. Don’t give in to erratic behaviour. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 You will be unpredictable and impulsive in your actions and this can cost you both emotionally and financially. It is important for you to trust in someone whom you respect.

Schumacher on hand for Ferrari

King call-up is sheer madness

Ferrari will be calling on the experience of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher for the start of the Formula One season. Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said the former champion would be working “in the background” but will attend team meetings. “His knowledge and experience will be of great use to the team there,” she said. Schumacher’s manager Willi Weber told Germany’s Bild newspaper: “For the last two years it wasn’t so important for Michael to be in the pits. But now with all the rule changes he can help the engineers understand the car better.” – DPA

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says captain Ledley King’s call-up to the England squad is “mad” and “pointless”. He believes the 28-year-old would have no chance of playing at the World Cup and cannot understand why the defender has been called up by manager Fabio Capello. “I said if Ledley plays against Ukraine next Wednesday, there Redknapp is no way he would be able to play for us the following Saturday. “He barely manages anything on a Friday the day before a game, that’s how it has to be with him. “Ledley is a fantastic player for us and I would never stop any player playing for their country.” – Agencies

Hiddink to help draw up targets Chelsea will seek the advice of Guus Hiddink over summer transfer targets even though he might not be at the club next season. “We are going to solicit his views as we think about summer transfers,” Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck told the Daily Express. Buck also defended the club’s recent transfer strategy despite a number of big-money signings failing to live up to expectations. “I don’t think we make any more mistakes than any other club,” said Buck.

Rooney escapes fresh FA action Wayne Rooney will not face further disciplinary action following the red card he received against Fulham last weekend. Although he had words with Phil Dowd after being shown the red card, the official has confirmed he was not sworn at by Rooney, an offence which could have led to a longer ban. – AFP

Brazil striker Robinho threatened Pele with legal action over the former great’s apparent suggestion that he had a drug problem. The Man City forward is angry at Pele’s reported comments last week that Robinho and Ronaldo had both had a drug problem. Robinho’s representatives want Pele to explain the comments attributed to him and apologise if they were accurately reported. “A formal retraction from Pele will be requested” a statement said. – AP

LAST BIG CHANCE Prayad seeks key to US Masters in hometown Hua Hin AFP, Hua Hin

T

hai star Prayad Marksaeng knows he has one last throw of the dice in his quest to qualify for the US Masters when he competes in the inaugural Black Mountain Masters here this week. An impressive tied 13th at this month WGC-CA Championship in the United States has moved Prayad up to 50th place on the official world rankings and he needs to stay there to qualify for the year’s first Major at Augusta National. A strong finish in his hometown of Hua Hin, where he grew up in poverty, should help him achieve his goal. “It’s great to have a new Asian Tour tournament in Hua Hin. It has been quite a long time that we’ve had a big event in my home town,” he said. “It will be a great week. And if a Hua Hin native can win the tournament, it would be perfect.” As a child, Prayad walked across a golf course to get to school and made his own golf

club with a bamboo and some scrap metal. Despite his humble beginnings, he has now become one of the Asian Tour’s leading names, winning six times in Asia and three times in Japan. The smooth-swinging Thai has not forgotten his roots and plans to put up a show for his fans. “I would like my fans to see me play some good golf. I’ll be thinking of winning,” said the 43-year-old, who added that it was tremendous for Black Mountain to back a new tournament on the Asian Tour. “The economy is down but golf in Thailand is up. This offers a chance for the new generation of players to gain experience apart from competing in local events,” he said.

Judge kills Daly’s libel suit Pro golfer John Daly claimed a Florida newspaper libelled him in a column suggesting he failed “the scoundrel sniff test,” but a judge disagreed. Duval County Circuit Judge Hugh Carithers dismissed Daly’s libel lawsuit yesterday and granted the Florida TimesUnion’s request for summary

judgement. He ruled that former columnist Mike Freeman’s statements were either true or constitutionally protected opinion. Daly had sued in 2005, alleging a column by Freeman written during The Player’s Championship that year defamed him. Freeman’s column said: “How does Daly not fail the scoundrel sniff test with fans despite possessing definite Thug Life qualifications. Look at the Daly blog. Domestic violence accusations? Yup. Substance abuse issues? Unfortunately, three different kids from three different moms, making him the Shawn Kemp of golf? Yes. A former wife indicted for laundering illegal drug profits? Roger that.” Carithers wrote in his opinion that the alleged defamatory statements were opinions based upon disclosed facts. “The only possible basis for a defamation action would be if Daly proved that one of the four underlying facts was false, but there is no genuine dispute with respect to any of the underlying facts,” Carithers wrote. The judge also cited constitutional protections against libel.

Japanese celebrate WBC win

eattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-out, tworun single in the top of the 10th inning as defending champion Japan beat reigning Olympic champion South Korea 5-3 yesterday to win their second straight World Baseball Classic title. The Japanese won the inaugural tournament three years ago, beating Cuba 10-6 in the finals at San Diego. “Well, we represented Japan,” manager Tatsunori Hara said. “Day by day, the team evolved. “I felt like we could have scored more, but it was difficult for us to earn runs with the Korean defence.” Japan, who out-hit South Korea 15-5, blew several scoring opportunities and stranded 14 runners. “We became No 1 in the world,” Hara said. “The fact that two Asian countries were able to play against each other in the finals is something that we and the Koreans can be proud of.” The 35-year-old Suzuki, an eight-time All Star, is a .331 hitter in eight seasons with the Mariners after starring in Japan. He tied Lou Gehrig’s major league record with his eighth straight season of at least 100 runs and 200 hits last year. South Korea had tied the game at 3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Lee Bum-ho’s run-scoring single off Japanese closer Yu Darvish (21), who got in trouble by issuing one-out walks to Kim Hyun-soo

Darvish struck out Choo Shin-soo before Lee lined a 1-1 pitch into left field, with pinchrunner Lee Jong-wook scoring easily from second. Seiichi Uchikawa opened the 10th with a single, was sacrificed to second and took third on a single by Akinori Iwamura. After pinch-hitter Munenori Kawasaki popped out, Iwamura took second on defensive indifference. Suzuki managed to foul off a pitch after it had bounced before lining the eighth pitch of the at-bat from Lim Chang-yong (1-1) to centre for his fourth hit. eight previous games. Given the lead, Darvish worked around a leadoff walk to retire South Korea in the bottom of the 10th, setting off a wild celebration when he struck out Lee Jin-young to end the four-hour game. “Although there is regret, we did our best,” South Korean manager Kim In-sik said through an interpreter. “I myself have no dissatisfaction. We kept coming back.” Asked about allowing Suzuki to hit with two runners in scoring position instead of walking him intentionally, Kim replied: “I don’t know why the pitcher tried to pitch directly to Ichiro. I did not understand. In the end, it did not work out for us.”

Special editions rolled off newspaper printing presses and Japanese fans who’d taken time off work to watch the World Baseball Classic final celebrated with banners emblazoned with “Samurai Japan”. The WBC may not be a big deal in the United States but it’s huge in Japan, which prides itself on its baseball pedigree. Needing a 10th inning to beat arch rivals South Korea 5-3 in Los Angeles late Monday only added to the tension. Workers crammed into bars and restaurants in Tokyo and other cities to watch the game which started at 10.30am local time yesterday. Electronics stores selling big screen TVs were turned into public viewing galleries as the baseball-crazy nation stopped to watch. “To defend the title and do it against South Korea is a great feeling,” said Soichiro Tabata, an office worker who watched the game at a Tokyo sports bar. “I took an extra-long lunch break but I think I’ll get away with it today.” In Seoul, thousands skipped work and school to watch a large-screen broadcast of the game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. The loss to Japan was a blow but many Koreans were quick to praise their baseball team. “What a shame! It could have been such a moralebooster for Koreans,” said Kim Jin-hee. – A P

aisuke Matsuzaka captured his second consecutive World Baseball Classic Most Valuable Player award after another stunning performance to help Japan keep global supremacy in its beloved sport. Matsuzaka claimed the honour after Japan defeated South Korea 5-3 in 10 innings to capture a second consecutive Classic crown, although his big

effort came in a 9-4 semi-final victory Sunday over the United States. Added to his World Series title in 2007 as a member of the Boston Red Sox, Matsuzaka has collected honours unlike any other pitcher in history. “I’m a very lucky person,” Matsuzaka said. “It’s not something many people experience or earn. I’m very thankful for the MVP award. I didn’t think it

was going to be me at all.” It would have been difficult to select anyone else from the repeat champions as Matsuzaka went 3-0 for the second Classic in a row, this time with a 2.45 earned-run average over 14 2/3 innings. The man known as “Dice-K” allowed four runs on 14 hits, striking out 13 while surrendering five walks. He defeated the Koreans in round one, Cuba in

round two and the US Major League Baseball stars in the semi-finals. “The biggest difference was this time I was already a champion and I was able to help us do it again,” Matsuzaka said. “In a tournament like this you must do more than throw good pitches. You have to win no matter what.” Matsuzaka’s life changed greatly after his display in the 2006 Classic.

RAIN RESCUES DANAI Nature helps weary Thai quell surge by hot Ukrainian By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS, Nakhon Ratchasima

ain saved Danai Udomchoke in the opening match of the US$50,000 LTATSAT Korat Open as the weary eighth seed advanced with a 6-3 6-3 victory over grumpy Ukrainian Denys Molchanov yesterday. Leading 6-3 and 2-1, Danai began to feel the effects of playing for three successive weeks as his muscles seized up. Molchanov recovered to 3-3 but the Thai was rescued by light showers. After the 30-minute break that followed, a rejuvenated Danai emerged to reel off three straight games and close out the match. “If it wasn’t for the rain, I don’t know what would have happened. I felt stiff all over after playing non-stop since the

Danai Udomchoke tries to remove his cap from the racquet Davis Cup,’’ said the world No 147, who played the final of the Bangkok Open on Sunday. Though the Ukrainian qualifier was the more aggressive of the two, he was inconsistent. Molchanov either whipped clean winners or committed errors. The frustration was too much for him at one point, and he smashed his racquet in fury at seeing another shot go wide.

“I felt much better after the rain – the stiffness eased up. I also changed my game plan and it worked,’’ added Danai, who lined up a clash with South African Izak Van Der Merwe who sent the ailing Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria packing 7-5 6-1. The world junior No 2 was affected by a knee injury. “He has big serves,” Danai noted of his next opponent.

Two compatriots made early exits yesterday, leaving Danai the lone Thai left in the singles. Third seed Chris Guccione of Australia blasted a string of rocket serves to pick off Sonchat Ratiwatana 6-2 6-3 while Im Kyu-tae of South Korea vanquished Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana 6-1 6-1. Heat is still a factor here and its latest victim was German Dieter Kindlmann who retired at 1-4 in the match against thirdseeded Go Soeda of Japan. Fifth-seeded Michail Elgin of Russia lost in the first round for the second week running, going out to Marsel Ilhan of Turkey 1-6 7-5 4-6. Elsewhere, Alexandre Kudravtsev of Russia downed Somdev Dewarman of India 7-5 6-3, and Martin Slanar of Austria moved past Chen Ti of Taiwan 6-2 7-6 (7-5), Filip Prpic of Sweden trounced Austrian Joseph Sirianni 6-2 6-2, and Israel’s Noam Okun eased past Evgeny Donkoy of Russia 6-2 6-3.

Rain factor in IPL bid AFP, London

T

he contest between England and South Africa to stage the Indian Premier League (IPL) was hotting up as bad weather threatened to cool English hopes of staging the lucrative Twenty20 event, which runs from April 10-May 24. IPL chiefs were attracted to England for several reasons. Among those were the relatively short distance between venues and the strong support for Asian teams in the country’s major cities, which are also home to Test match grounds that could stage fixtures. But according to Cricinfo website, opinion has moved sharply in favour of South Africa, with IPL officials increasingly worried by how rain, which often makes a major dent in the early part of an English cricket season, could adversely affect up to 70 per cent of their fixture schedule. In contrast, South Africa has a generally better weather.

DRMOURINHO,I PRESUME Just call him Dr Mourinho. Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho was awarded an honorary doctorate by Lisbon’s Technical University.

Surprised over the poor pre-season per-

formance of the McLaren-Mercedes team, but worried about the excellence of Brawn GP and the evolution of Toyota, Ferrari’s Brazilian Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa travelled to Australia yesterday. “So far it is difficult to have a clear idea, because it is the first race that counts, but I think we have never seen a McLaren so far behind, a McLaren with so many difficulties as this year,” Massa said. As he evaluated his potential rivals for the season that is set to start on Sunday at the Australian Grand Prix, Massa said he was impressed by the “resurrection” of Honda – now Brawn GP – in recent tests. “We have seen a Brawn GP that reemerged from ashes to be a second faster than everyone else, and a Toyota that grew from one moment to the next and improved its car a lot. They probably have a bit more than everyone else, be it’s in the technical aspect, in aerodynamics, wherever, I don’t know, but they have a bit more,” the second-placed driver of the 2008 season said. According to Massa, the evolution of Brawn GP and Toyota forces Ferrari to fight to reach the top level. “We have to discover where that difference is coming from and try to improve our car, or discover whether that difference comes from some area that is not yet so clear.” However, he noted that he was “satisfied” with Ferrari’s pre- season performance. “The car is competitive, it is fast, it is solid. We could race quite a bit and carry out some race simulations in which there was no problem with the car. We are ready to start the championship and I hope we are as competitive as we have been in the past few years,” Massa said. The Brazilian stressed that he feels “mentally stronger” this season, after the 2008 title slipped through his hands in the last lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the last race of the season. “It was a great life lesson for me, a great lesson of personal learning which will probably make me stronger to fight for any championship, for any race or for any victory whenever I am on the track,” he said. – D P A
