ive people in Ubon Ratchathani filed complaints with police yesterday about loan sharks charging them interest of 150 per cent per year. They said they faced bullying and even threats to their lives over the debts, which total several million baht.

One of them, 28-yearold salesperson Nanthiya Jaijing, said she needed to buy cosmetics to sell so she borrowed Bt450,000 from former school friend Nattanicha Buayai on April 26 last year. When she fell behind with payments, she borrowed Bt700,000 from other sources to repay the debt.

Debts sold, doubled Nanthiya says she has now used four lenders to pay off each previous debt, including a local police lieutenant. She now owes a total of Bt1.8 million to her current lender, a friend of Nattanicha.

Nanthiya says he threatened to destroy her property after she could no longer even keep up with the interest payments of 10 per cent per month plus another eight per week.

Consumer Protection Centre official Nattinee Duangdamrongsak said it was representing a group of five debtors all facing harassment after their loan contracts had been shifted from one lender to another, doubling their debt.

Spider-man unmasked

pider-man usually saves people from monsters while firemen usually rescue them from burning buildings. Both try to make the world a better place, but they often lead complicated lives themselves.

Recently, fire fighter Somchai Yoosabai managed to coax an autistic boy to safety from a third-floor window ledge by showing up in a Spider-man outfit.

The boy had ignored all pleas to get down but smiled as he saw the superhero and immediately ran into Spidey’s arms.

This isn’t the first time the fireman has dressed up to save someone. A drunkard planning to jump to his death was talked (or maybe laughed) out of it when Somchai turned up dressed as his favourite morlam singer, Poifai Malaiporn.

“I’m glad I’ve helped people realise that firemen will do everything they can to help in a 199 emergency,” says Somchai.

The plane’s black box showed that the Tunisian pilot Chefik Gharbi lost control of the situation, ceded command of the plane to his co-pilot and began praying.

Gharbi and his co-pilot, who was also convicted in the case, were among 23 people who survived the crash. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Samoan woman charged over in-flight birth A 29-year-old Samoan woman who gave birth on a flight to New Zealand was charged yesterday with abandoning her baby girl in an aircraft toilet.

The baby was found by cleaners in the plane’s toilet rubbish bin after the 150 passengers and cabin crew, who reportedly knew nothing about the birth, had disembarked.

The woman was identified when authorities noticed her bleeding as she told immigration officials that she had misplaced her passport.

She faced a second charge of assault on a child, Radio New Zealand reported.

The woman underwent surgery at Middlemore Hospital after what police said was a difficult and complicated birth on board the plane as it arrived in Auckland from Apia, the capital of Samoa.

News reports said the woman was flying to New Zealand as part of a group recruited to work as seasonal fruit pickers. – D P A

skydiving, mountainclimbing interpreter from Taiwan has scored herself a shot at what’s been dubbed the “Best Job in the World” – getting paid to serve as the caretaker of a tropical Australian paradise island.

Officials with the tourism department of Australia’s Queensland state announced yesterday that Clare Wang won a spot among 11 finalists vying for the job – a A$150,000 (Bt3.7-million) contract to relax on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef for six months while writing

a blog to promote the area.

Wang was selected by the public as the “wild card” winner from a pool of 50 shortlisted entries the department had chosen earlier. She received 151,676 votes – almost three times as many as her nearest competitor – on the job ad’s website, which featured the video applications of all 50 hopefuls. Nearly 35,000 people from across the world applied for the gig.

Ten others short-listed Tourism Queensland will choose the other ten finalists and announce the names on

April 3. All 11 hopefuls will be flown to Hamilton Island in early May for interviews, and one will be declared the winner on May 6. The job begins on July 1.

“Clare has done a remarkable job of promoting her quest for the Best Job in the World in Taiwan and has become an overnight media celebrity,” Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said in a statement.

A New Zealand teenage whizzkid who admitted developing software that infected a million computers around the world has been hired by telecommunications company TelstraClear to advise companies how to avoid hackers.

Owen Walker, 19, admitted when he appeared in court in July to being part of what the FBI called “an elite international botnet coding group” that caused chaos around the world, including shutting down the entire network of 50,000 computers at the University of Pennsylvania. – DPA

Maid abuse A Singapore court yesterday charged a property agent with seriously hurting the eye of his Indonesian maid and 10 other counts of maid abuse.

Lim Beng Tai, 38, is charged with beating the maid several times. His wife Connie Ng Lay Har is accused of punching the maid once and slamming her right hand against a car.

t’s been three years since a tiny blue elephant with enormous eyes bounded his way into the hearts of filmgoers in the first Thai animated feature in almost 30 years.

Now Kantana Animation’s Khan Kluay, who since his 2006 big-screen debut has been entertaining the little ones with a TV series on Channel 7, is back in another movie adventure.

In “Khan Kluay II”, the hero elephant (voiced by Atthapporn Teemakorn) is a veteran soldier in King Naresuan’s army. He and his mate, Chaba Kaew (Ann Thongprasom) are the proud parents of twins. When his family is kidnapped, he has to choose between his duty and those he loves. He ends up confronting the vindictive elephant Nga Nin and the brutal king (Nonzee Nimibutr) who is still furious and sad at having lost his son during the battle with King Naresuan.

Kompin Khemkumnerd has handed over the director reins to Taweelap Srivuthivong, art director of the first film, while he continues work on his next movie.

“We’ve worked hard to improve on the mistakes in the first part,” says Taweelap, adding that the two-plus years of production for the sequel was necessary to ensure that the movie didn’t look outdated.

“The story and animation are more complicated and animation technology is constantly moving forward,” Taweelap says. “The sequel has more adventure and,

to make the scenes more incredible, we sent a team to Burma to research the locations.”

Powerful voices With Khan Kluay all grown up, it was essential to pick the right voices, says voice director Montree Jen-aksorn. He’s made an unexpected casting call, picking filmmaker Nonzee Nimibutr to portray the Burmese king.

“He has a powerful voice, which is a perfect fit for the king’s character. Kids will tremble in their seats,” grins Montree, who lends his own voice to the sorcerer Ong Sa Another remarkable choice is that of actress Apiradee Phawapootanon, who modulates her usual high-pitched voice to the gentle crystal tones of Princess Suphankanlaya.

Other voice actors include Warut Worratham as the pigeon Jid Rid and Nattha Loyd as Sang Da, Chaba Kaew’s mother.

ction heroine Yanin “Jeeja” Vismitananda has a new look for her second project – an action-romance that’s been dubbed “Due Suay Du”, literally “stubborn, beautiful and fierce”.

“I play a stubborn young woman,” says Jeeja, who’s cropped and dyed the curly frizz she wore in “Chocolate”.

“I’m happy about changing my hair. The new style is good for doing an action film.”

The project marks the return of Rashane Limtrakul, who directed a segment in the “4 Romances” short-film collection. But his last feature was his directorial debut in

1995, “Loke Thung Bai Hai Nai Khon Diaw” (“Romantic Blues”).

Joining Jeeja on the set are familiar faces Panna Rittikrai and Weeraphol Phoomatfon, with whom she worked on “Chocolate”. They’re helping the young actress perfect her high-kicking moves for her character, a girl who has to fight for her love.

“We never see martial-arts

films that have love as a central theme,” says Rashane.

“But I firmly believe that love always comes with a fight and a fight is always involved with love.”

Jeeja’s love interest is Kazu Patrick Tang, a FrenchVietnamese martial artist who’s making his debut in a starring role. He’s previously appeared in Luc Besson’s action flick “Unleashed”.

s artist-in-residence at Thai Celadon in Chiang Mai, ceramist Vipoo Srivilasa has tapped into the creativity of the factory’s employees.

The pieces they’ve created under his guidance will be on view in the exhibition “Monsters by Hands” at the northern city’s Pongnoi Art Space from April 5 to 26.

“I usually work with lowfired earthenware, but celadon is a high-fired stoneware formed with a wood-ash glaze and a cracked, glazed surface,” says Melbourne-based Vipoo, known for his quirky creations.

“I wanted to combine these two techniques, and during my stay I conducted a workshop to share some fun and creativity with the 40 employees.”

in his solo show “Colonies” at Bangkok’s Surapon Gallery last month.

You won’t find the familiar celadon tableware in “Monsters by Hands”. Instead, expect alien figures that challenge preconceptions about factory-made products.

Vipoo invited photographer Jatturong Sartkhum to document the creation process at Thai Celadon with pictures of the individual artists and their efforts.

or Areejit Photales, a 34year-old nurse from Si Sa Ket province, life as she knew it collapsed the day she was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. Exhausted from twiceweekly dialysis, she knew life could only return to normal if she had a kidney transplant.

But where to find a donor? Her younger brother tested but was a different blood type.

Her elder brother was Type O – a match – and agreeable, but Areejit’s hopes took another battering when tests showed he was infected with Hepatitis C. “I felt desperate. Then I got a call from heaven,” says Areejit.

That call was from Assoc Prof Yingyos Avihingsanon, a nephrologist at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine. He asked whether Areejit wanted to be the first Thai to undergo the ABO

“Also, the donor needed to be someone very strong, otherwise we risked having two patients as a result of the operation.”

This innovative programme, introduced some 10 years ago in the West, allows patients to receive a kidney from living donors even though their blood types are incompatible.

They must, however, undergo several treatments before and after the transplant to remove harmful antibodies that can cause organ rejection.

That treatment is called plasmapheresis and is similar to dialysis.

Is mid-cycle pain normal?

I am 38 years old and have lower abdominal and pelvic pain that occurs roughly midway through my menstrual cycle – that is, around a week after my period ends.

I asked my doctor and he said that it’s normal and is because of ovulation. What can I take to ease the discomfort?

Ovulation may well be the cause mid-cycle pain, though you should consult your doctor next time you are experiencing discomfort so he can conduct

an ultrasound and confirm that you are indeed ovulating. If the pain is caused by ovulation, it’s not a serious problem.

As for treatment, I would suggest you start taking the oral contraceptive pill (birth control pill), which will stop you from ovulating. If you still have the pain while using the pill, then other possible causes should be explored through laparoscopic surgery.

The British team said the Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams cars run with rear diffusers, underbody sections to aid air flow, which are contrary to the rules. Ferrari and Renault have also expressed their unhappiness.

he ageing, yellow Labrador named Mulligan stretched out on the carpet next to the office door at Bay Hill and didn’t move except to lift his eyelids when footsteps disrupted his morning nap.

Suddenly, he lifted his head and staggered to all fours, wagging his tail when he heard a familiar voice coming up the stairs.

Arnold Palmer climbed the final few steps and smiled at his dog. For more than 50 years, Palmer has made everyone around him feel better.

That’s why he’s the “King”.

And that’s why he is more relevant than ever in the world of golf. US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem is asking players to be more aware of how good they have it. He wants them to be reminded that they essentially are working for the corporate sponsors writing the cheques and for the fans behind the ropes.

Last week, tour officials posted a notice on the bulletin board in the locker room at the Transitions Championship.

“Please remember to thank the CEO of this week’s event,” it read. “Cards have been placed in your lockers for you convenience.”

Anyone think Palmer ever needed a reminder like that?

Players like him don’t come around very often, if at all. He has transcended his sport to become one of the most famous athletes in the world. He won a US Open by 15 shots. He won another US Open on one leg.

Palmer is golf’s greatest ambassador. Woods might be its greatest player.

All of which leads to an intriguing question.

Which is golf more likely to see next? Another Tiger Woods or another Arnold Palmer?

Padraig Harrington cast his vote for another Tiger, mainly because of the media and

celebrity culture.

“It’s hard to be an Arnold Palmer now,” he said. “I don’t know if the era could happen again where you could have somebody like Arnold Palmer, who was a man of the people.

Now, sports people tend to be a bit more aloof and detached.”

Peter Jacobsen said he expected to see another Palmer before another Woods.

“Like day turns into night, I think you’ll see the tour change again very soon,” said Jacobsen. “I think we’re likely to see the next Arnold Palmer.”

“Tiger is more like Jack [Nicklaus] was early in his career,” Faxon said. “He was dedicated to improving himself and his career, and winning majors, which is great for the tour.”

But does Woods look fans in the eye? Does he remember the names of people he met 10 years ago no matter the size of their role? Does he see the media as a way to promote golf, or does he see it as an obstacle?

Finchem is asking players to do more for the tour, for the fans and for the sponsors.

Woods has said he will do his part, but the details were vague until word began to leak about a private function on Monday at Isleworth Country Club where Woods hosted a breakfast and a clinic for a dozen or so CEOs of companies that are US PGA Tour title sponsors.

“He did something extra that he was asked to do,” Rocco Mediate said.

The best thing for golf would be the arrival of another Arnold Palmer. Especially if his name was Tiger Woods.

THESPORT Steven Gerrard wants England coach Fabio Capello to give him more freedom to produce the kind of matchwinning heroics that have fired Liverpool back into the Premier League title race.

Gerrard’s dynamic displays have hauled the Reds to within one point of leaders Manchester United and also helped humiliate Real Madrid in the Champions League. The Liverpool captain hit a hat-trick against Aston Villa on Sunday to cap a superb run of form that has seen the midfielder come into his own in a more advanced position just behind Spanish striker Fernando Torres.

After two seasons being used in a variety of ways by Kop boss Rafa Benitez, who found it hard to tame the sometimes tactically undisciplined star, Gerrard is thriving in his new role and is hopeful Capello has taken note ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Slovakia at Wembley.

“I’ve never been happier than I am now in my career,” Gerrard said. “I played a couple of years on the right when Rafa first came to Liverpool. I had a little moan and a little complain that I was there every week.

“Now I’ve got two holding midfielders behind me doing an awful lot of running for me and freeing it up for me.

And I feel that’s when you get the best out of myself, when I’m free to run at defenders and cause danger in the attacking third.

“Rafa’s certainly helping me to improve in this position. I’m getting my head around it and really enjoying the freedom of playing in there.

Jose plots Inter revolution Jose Mourinho wants to rejuvenate Inter Milan by bringing in two or three younger players for next season, and has indicated he may stay with the Italian club for “another four or five years”.
