fter a teacher at Bangkok’s Mathayom Prachaniwet School died of a respiratory disease, deputy Bangkok governor Malinee Sukvejvorrakij said yesterday that any suspected type-A (H1N1) flu cases should be reported to city-administration clinics or public health officers as a matter of urgency. Initial findings show the 35-year-old teacher died of lung infection. Autopsy results available soon should determine whether she died of the type-A (H1N1) virus.

Developed heavy cough Deputy school director Kanokphorn Mepholkij said the unnamed teacher had been treated for a separate condition since last Wednesday but developed a heavy cough that doctors were unable to treat successfully. Her cough started soon after the school closed for a week in response to the first student being positively diagnosed with the new flu strain. Malinee had earlier paid a visit to a 57-year-old woman with type-A (H1N1) flu in hospital in Bangkok’s Thon Buri district. She reported that the woman is recovering well. DAILY

hailand’s legendary songwriter Eua Sunthornsanan will go down in history as one of the world’s great personalities after being recognised by Unesco. Born in 1911, Eua founded the Suntaraporn Band in the 1940s. “We will hold a year of celebrations in his honour from next year,” Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch said yesterday. The celebrations will begin on January 21, Eua’s birthday. According to Teera, a Unesco committee has already approved the nomination of Eua as a Personality of the World.

“The Unesco board is expected to officially approve the committee’s decision in October,” Teera said.

Big-band pioneer Eua was a composer and a concert master who pioneered the introduction of Western music into Thai culture. His composition “Loy Krathong” became famous across the world. According to his granddaughter Atiphorn Senawong, Eua penned the song in just 30 minutes at the request of guests at a 1955 Loy Krathong party at Thammasat University. Eua composed a vast number of songs, including some writ-

ten to honour Their Majesties the King and Queen as well as other royals. Suntaraporn, Thailand’s largest MR Kukrit big band, is Pramoj still going strong after 70 years and gives at least 16 concerts each year. Over the years, the band has produced hundreds of musicians and singers in Western-style Thai music (phleng Thai sakol) and created a hoard of classic Thai songs. The Suntaraporn Band offers

Founder of Suntaraporn Band named World Personality by Unesco scholarships to talented young singers and students between the ages of 10 and 25 – a policy initiated by Eua before his death in 1981 of lung cancer.

Kukrit also honoured Teera yesterday revealed that the celebrations for MR Kukrit Pramoj, who is also set to be recognised as a Unesco Personality, will run from 2011 to 2012 to mark the centenary of his birth. Born in 1911, Kukrit made great contributions to the country as a politician, prime minister, National Artist, writer and thinker. He died in 1995.

Michael Jackson’s

‘BILLY JEAN’ was the first music video by a black artist to be aired on MTV

An annual awards show for black entertainers became a star-studded memorial to Michael Jackson on Sunday as the AfricanAmerican A-list turned out in force to salute the King of Pop. Singers, actors, sports stars and television personalities crowded into Los Angeles’ famous Shrine Auditorium for the Black Entertainment Awards, which had been hastily retooled as a night to celebrate Jackson. Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx set the tone for proceedings by appearing in a variety of Jackson’s signature costumes and even moonwalking across the stage at one point. “Is there any question who was the best?” he asked the crowd. Basketball star Lebron James, who won the award for best male athlete, paid tribute to the Jackson family as he collected his award. “I want to say to all of the Jackson family: This night is unbelievable because of you guys. What you did for us and the whole world is unbelievable,” he said. Earlier, stars arriving on the red carpet told reporters personal stories about Jackson, saying his music had been instrumental in breaking down racial barriers. “We miss him and we love him and we just feel devastated,” said singer Alicia Keys, urging people to remember Jackson in a “respectful, positive way”. The organisers announced shortly after Jackson’s death that the annual ceremony would be tweaked to serve as an unofficial memorial for the singer and a celebration of his life. Several stars hailed Jackson’s role in breaking down racial barriers and giving African-Americans a hero to idolise. “He’s one of the reasons why Barack Obama’s the president,” said hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. “He started the change about how AfricanAmericans are perceived.” Actress Taraji P Henson echoed Combs’ words, saying: “He’s the biggest star in America – in the world. I feel like he parted a gap. His rise to fame was the beginning of ‘Oh, black people are okay’.” AFP, Los Angeles

STAR HAD FAINT PULSE AFTER LAST BREATH Doctor denies using strong painkillers on dying star; clarifies inconsistencies By Michael White, Andy Fixmer BLOOMBERG

ichael Jackson wasn’t breathing when his doctor discovered the dying singer, though a faint pulse was detected, according to the physician’s lawyers. Conrad Murray, who tried to revive the self-proclaimed King of Pop on Thursday, never gave Jackson any powerful pain medications, Miranda Sevcik, a spokeswoman for the doctor’s law firm said yesterday. Murray is considered a witness and not a suspect in Jackson’s death, Los Angeles Police Department spokes-

woman Norma Eisenman said yesterday. The doctor met for three hours with police detectives on Saturday to answer questions about the singer’s death, the law firm said. Dr Murray helped identify the circumstances around the death of the pop icon and clarified some inconsistencies. He rode in the ambulance and stayed at the hospital for hours, comforting and consoling the Jackson family. Attorney Edward Chernoff was with Murray during the meeting with police, according to the statement. The doctor continued efforts to resuscitate Jackson, 50, on the way to the

though no more meetings with police are scheduled, the doctor will voluntarily remain in Los Angeles and be available for any further questions.

Final goodbyes The Jackson family is starting to make funeral arrangements, Rev Al Sharpton said. A second autopsy was performed at the family’s request to resolve unanswered questions they had, Alford said. An independent pathologist performed the autopsy, Matt Alford, a partner at the law firm, said. A second autopsy is normal in a celebrity’s death, he added. “It’s also so that when conspiracy theories start coming out, you have a second opinion that validates earlier findings.”

Soothsayer, fighting for Nina Wang’s billions, allegedly said he could improve her health

A

n ailing Hong Kong tycoon gave her feng shui master millions in the hope that it would help to prolong her life, a court heard yesterday. Tony Chan, a bartender-turnedsoothsayer who says he is the sole beneficiary of Nina Wang’s HK$13billion (Bt57.1 billion) estate, told Hong Kong’s high court he had received three lots of HK$688 million each from Wang between 2005 and 2006.

Gift claims challenged Lawrence Lok, lawyer for Chinachem Charitable Foundation, a group controlled by Wang’s siblings, which is challenging Chan’s claim, asked the feng shui master why he was given the lavish sums of money. “It’s a gift to me. She addressed me as her hubby. She loved me. So it’s a gift,” said Chan. However, Lok pointed out that the

money was advanced during a time when Wang’s health was deteriorating, after she was diagnosed with cancer in late 2004. She died of the disease in 2007, aged 69.

‘Useless’ magic Lok reminded the court of earlier testimony by a doctor who had said that a feng shui master had told Wang he could improve her health by taking her hair and clothes to China. The lawyer added that another witness who travelled with Wang to Singapore for treatment in 2006 said she had overheard Wang on the phone with Chan saying: “You are useless and I am not getting any better.” “You told Wang that you have means to prolong her life,” Lok told Chan, who denied the allegation, saying that he did not have such abilities. Chinachem says a will awarding the huge fortune to Chan is a fake.

Thammarat Duangsiri, aka Jack, a rock guitar instructor at Prart Music School, a columnist for guitar magazine Overdrive, as well as producer, composer, arranger and studio musician, has just walked off with the title Worldwide Guitar Idol 2009. “I was confident I could win as I was very well prepared for this second guitar contest,” says the 30-year-old musician during a party on Sunday night at Overtone on RCA to celebrate his victory. Jack was among the 120 victorious qualifiers out of a total of 1,000 guitarists who uploaded video clips of their guitar performances to YouTube and sent them to GuitarIdol.tv. In the final online round of 12 contestants, Jack was one of the eight guitarists chosen by the judges but just missed out of being in the Top 4 from the public vote. He was crowned Guitar Idol 2009 after playing live in front of thousands of guitar fans at the London International Music Show in the UK on June 13.

“I achieved my championship victory thanks to my newly written song and stage experience,” he says. “During ‘Jack’ Thammarat Duangsiri the final, a competitor was so frozen by stage fright, he just couldn’t move while he was playing. We had no time to do any soundchecks before performing though we were allowed a one-hour rehearsal with a backup band the day before.” Jack’s instrumental, titled “On the Way”, is a rock number with Thai hints, a pentatonic scale and an easy-listening melody. “Prior to the contest, I looked at the video of last year’s contest to find out why the Brazilian guitarist won. I figured it was down to his striking stage performance and a song that communicated with the audience and judges, more than his guitar technique,” he says. Jack’s prizes include two guitars – a Paul Reed Smith and a Mayones Regius 7 – plus a full stack of Marshall JVM410H amps and speakers. “The award has also made me better known, both local and internationally,” he smiles. “But I hope I’m more than just a guitar hero.”

Dove’s ‘NanoComplex’ technology might end the daily damage you do to your hair D A I LY X P R E S S

t’s no wonder we all have badhair days, says Unilever haircare expert Peter Bailey. “Every day when we brush, wash, dry or style our hair, we’re slowly damaging it,” he says. “Over the years this damage accumulates, and we end up with split ends, frizz, fly-away hair and general unmanageability.”

Split ends, Dr Bailey warns, indicate extreme hair damage. “It’s impossible to fix them, but you can halt and reverse the process.” Short hair is easier to deal with because the cuticle layer of hair closest to the scalp is healthiest. Longer hair has the cortex layer exposed, so it gets weak and frayed. The Thai climate makes clear

what extra moisture in the air can do to hair, Bailey says. “Healthy hair is hydrophobic – it repels water. But if the cuticle is eroded, as is the case with damaged hair, water gets absorbed, making the hair fluffy and harder to manage. “And with the daily damage we inflict on our hair, we open the door to a vicious cycle. Every time we style it, we damage the hair, forcing us to use more intensive treatments and damaging it further.” Bailey’s 16 years in product research and development have led to the creation of Dove’s latest line of haircare products, which boast “NanoComplex” technology. “There are small particles that contain a dry conditioning core, with a wet silicone polymer surrounding it,” he says. “The size of NanoComplex particles is smaller than the conditioning particles in other shampoos. This implies a larger surface area, which means more complete coverage and a more comprehensive protective layer of lubricant over the hair.” Conditioning is crucial to beautiful hair, keeping it smooth and soft, but for long-term protection, products with smaller NanoComplex particles make haircare worry-free, Bailey says. “There are so many things that women already have to worry about – work, families, friends, relationships and their bodies. It would be nice to be able to eliminate bad-hair days from that list!”

You will be able to motivate and inspire people to get involved in something you believe in. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 You may be offered help but keep in mind that nothing is for free. Pattaya to host marathon Pattaya City has set its sights on hosting the 2012 Asian Marathon Championships. And this July the beach city will showcase its talents by hosting the Pattaya Marathon. Pol Maj Col Surapong Ariyamongkol, vice president and secretary general of the Amateur Athletics Association of Thailand, said the Pattaya Marathon, due on July 19, should boost the chances of the city, which is pitted against 45 other cities in the continent. “The marathon course in Pattaya is good enough to win votes from the Asian Amateur Athletics Association. If we win, it will develop into a major marathon event,” he said. Pattaya will employ up to 1,000 officials for the Pattaya Marathon next month. The city will organise a special campaign called “City Discount for A Whole Day” which offers discounts for tourists who use services of hotels, golf courses, restaurants and other establishments during the competition. – Daily Xpress

Greg Norman will play the Australian Open for the next three years, including this year’s event at New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney from December 3-6. Norman, 54, a five-time Australian Open champion, last played the Australian Open in 2005. “You hope that the top Australian players will support it,” Norman said. “I’ve been a huge proponent of that for more than 30 years. It’s up to the players. We’ll give them thechance.”

A FAB TOURNAMENT Fabiano is the toast of Brazil in the Confed Cup AFP, Johannesburg

K

aka might steal all the headlines but Luis Fabiano has emerged from the Confederations Cup as one of Brazil’s new golden boys. The Sevilla striker was the tournament top scorer with five goals, including his crucial brace in the final on Sunday that helped Brazil recover from two down to beat the United States 3-2. With his team in trouble, the athletic, lithe and technically gifted striker rose irresistibly to the challenge to underline his

status as the undisputed number one goal-getter for the South American champions. But it hasn’t always been so easy for Fabiano, who has battled with several other players, including injury-plagued star striker Ronaldo, for the coveted number nine shirt. “He scores goals, he’s always doing it,” said his coach Dunga. “I’m extremely happy with him. He is very hungry to play and get goals.” The 28-year-old joins Romario, Ronaldinho and Adriano as the fourth Brazilian to go home from the Confederations Cup with the Golden Shoe. He was also voted the tournament’s second best player, after

new Real Madrid signing Kaka. “I’m delighted that everything worked out as planned in the final,” he told FIFA.com. “I hadn’t scored in my two previous games but as it turned out there was no better way for me to reach that target of five goals in as many games.” Brazil are now looking towards the World Cup and the possibility of a sixth title. Fabiano is excited at the prospect and has set his own personal goal of scoring a goal a game if Brazil qualify and make it back to South Africa next year. “It would be nice to keep the average going at the World Cup here next year. I’ll be working hard to do just that,” he vowed.

No softening despite blunder

US goalkeeper Tim Howard struggles with Kaka’s header.

The failure by a linesman to award a goal scored by Kaka in Brazil’s 3-2 Confederations Cup final defeat Sunday of the United States does not appear to have softened Fifa president Joseph Blatter’s attitude towards goal-line technology. Kaka’s second-half header – when the Samba Boys trailed 2-1 – came off the underside of the bar and clearly crossed the line but Swedish referee Martin Hansson waved play on. “There should be no technology on the field,” said Blatte when asked about the incident. Blatter reiterated Fifa’s stance that if there is technology it should only be along the goal-line, citing the experiment in this season’s Europa League where games will be played with two extra assistant referees behind the goal-lines. “We are too conservative,” he said.

razil defended their Confederations Cup title on Sunday with a crushing come-from-behind 3-2 victory to inflict a cruel loss on tenacious underdogs the United States. The five-time world champions looked out for the count after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan put the Americans two up at half-time but they bounced back with a Luis Fabiano brace drawing them level with 16 minutes left. It set the scene for an exciting finale and captain Lucio made it a memorable night with a powerful header from an Elano corner with six minutes remaining. The victory sparked wild celebrations on the bench with Brazil now having won a gruelling seven games over the past 20 days – five at the Confederations Cup and two in World Cup qualifying. It was their third Confederations Cup crown following triumphs in 1997 and 2005 and coach Dunga was a happy man. “All the players were very concentrated on what needed to be done. I told them at halftime that we needed an early goal and to play the game we play. We wanted to win. We were very determined,” said Dunga, the World Cup winning captain from 1994. “It is difficult to overcome a 2-0 deficit but if you have committed players who always want to win then it is possible.

Brazil’s captain, Lucio, holds the Confederations Cup trophy aloft after the 3-2 win against USA. “If we can win this we can do much more in the future. I believe in these players.” Brazil had won 14 of their 15 previous encounters with the US and beaten Bob Bradley’s men 3-0 in the group stages. But since that match the US fortunes changed dramatically. After trouncing Egypt 3-0 to sneak into the knockout rounds on goals scored after finishing equal of points and goal difference with Italy, they shocked European champions Spain 2-0 in the semi-finals. But their luck ran out against Brazil. “That defeat really hurt,” said Bradley. “I’m extremely proud of my players, but it still feels pretty

lousy to let this one get away. “I hope though that people around the world see we have good team and great players and it is a big step forward.” On a cold winter’s night, his giantkillers began in an attacking mood with Fulham’s Dempsey making the first attempt on goal with a long distance strike that fizzed wide. Brazil started feeding the ball to Maicon on the right and he lofted several crosses into the box that put the US under pressure before Real Madrid’s new signing Kaka, the man-ofthe-match, glanced a header wide. But it was the US who stunned Brazil after 10 minutes.

Ahead of joining new club Real Madrid, Brazil midfielder Kaka was awarded the Golden Ball on Sunday after being voted best footballer at the Confederations Cup. Striker Luis Fabiano, a team-mate in the side that came from two goals behind to defeat the United States 3-2 in the final, finished second and American midfielder Clint Dempsey third. Fabiano collected the Golden Boot as leading scorer with five goals and USA goalkeeper Tim Howard received the Golden Glove as the best in his position at the dress rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Kaka paid tribute to his team-mates for taking Brazil to the title and allowing him to win the player of the tournament. “I’m very happy to be player of the final and championship,” said the former AC Milan man whose transfer to Madrid becomes official today. “Most important, as I’ve said before, I can only be player of the tournament because Brazil are the champions and if they weren’t then I wouldn’t get this award, so I would like to thank my teammates.” Asked about his new start at Real Madrid, Kaka said: “With respect to my new life at Madrid, I will talk about it on Tuesday when I’m officially their player. “I’ve managed to get my first cup and I hope the winning ways will continue in future in this new phase of my life.” AFP

F

ormer Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari blames goalkeeper Petr Cech, midfielder Michael Ballack and forward Didier Drogba for costing him his job, according to newspaper reports yesterday. Scolari was sacked in February after an unsuccessful seven-month spell in charge of the west London club. “The real owners of footaball today are the players,” he told O Globo. “They are the ones who decide everything. “Coaches on most of the big European teams are not strong enough to disagree with their demands. “Who do the teams prefer to

sack? The stars – who earn US$5.6 to 12.6 million a year with contracts of up to five seasons – or the coach? “Of course, the first to be dismissed will always be the coach. And the major footballers already perceive their power and do what they wish. “This was my major problem at Chelsea. Drogba, Ballack and Cech did not accept my methods of training nor my demands.” The three, he claimed, all made specific requests that went against his general policy. “Drogba appeared with a muscular contusion and said he required two months to take care of it – in Cannes,” he said. “And Ballack, alleging he had

Wayne Rooney believes he can fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez if he is played in his favoured central role and supported by new attacking talent. Ecuador winger Luis Antonio Valencia is set to join the Red Devils from Wigan, and Rooney is hoping more players will be signed. “We’ve lost two key players and obviously I hope we can get a few players in,” Rooney said. “Between them, Cristiano and Carlos scored a lot of goals for us last season and the season before, but I would like to think I’m capable of filling that gap.”

“With Cech, there was another problem. He had a personal trainer for goalies but only for himself and I was totally against this. “Look, the goalie trainer has to train all the goalies of the group, not only one. “He became furious and began to treat me coldly. In the dressing room it immediately became apparent I had strong opposition. “And they ended up backed by the directors of Chelsea.” Scolari became coach of the Uzbek side Bunyodkor earlier this month.

END Ana Ivanovic, right, cries as she hugs Venus Williams after their match.

Defending champion Venus Williams took the express route into the quarter-finals at Wimbledon as Ana Ivanovic was forced to quit yesterday’s fourth round match with a thigh injury. Williams was already well on course for the last eight after taking the first set 6-1 before Ivanovic called for treatment on her left leg during the opening game of the second set. The Serb, seeded 13th, served out the game but was unable to carry on and left the court in tears. Venus will next face Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, the 11th seed, as she strives to keep alive her bid to become the first woman to win a hat-trick of Wimbledon singles’ titles since Steffi Graf claimed three in a row from 1991 to 1993. The five-time Wimbledon champion has yet to drop a set in four rounds this year and her winning streak at the All England Club has now reached 18 matches. Even more remarkably, she has won 30 consecutive sets here since Japan’s Akiko Morigami took the second set of their third round match in 2007. Meanwhile, Elena Dementieva hardly broke sweat in yesterday’s sizzling Wimbledon heat as she cruised into the quarter-finals. Fourth seed Dementieva, a semi-finalist last year, beat fellow Russian blonde Elena Vesnina 6-1 63 in 70 minutes on Court 2 as temperatures rocketed towards 35 degrees. Vesnina fended off a set point and took the sixth game on a deuce but there was no stopping the Russian number two on her serve and Dementieva wrapped up the first set inside 29 minutes. AGENCIES

Scolari blasts Gang of Three

Striker Fabiano the Golden Boy

Luiz Felipe Scolari, some five months after his sacking by Chelsea, has come out all guns blazing and pointed the finger at three players he accuses of plotting against him – Petr Cech, Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba. Each of them has received stinging criticism from the Brazilian coach. >PAGES 27

In shock after being blasted by two first-half goals in Sunday’s Confederations Cup final against USA, Brazil staggered off the pitch at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park stadium with a mountain to climb. Less than a minute after the restart, the Samba Kings had pulled one back through striker Luis Fabiano. The same man used his golden boot to level matters 18 minutes later. >PAGE 24
