totally have no idea what people who throw stones at cars are thinking. They should do something useful in life instead of cause damage or, in a worst case, take the lives of others. Imagine if this happens to them or their family, how would they feel? I am torn apart every time I come across such tragic news.

PM gets star help to promote MO-SO project
A T-shirt-design contest hosted by Fat Radio on 104.5 MHz will also be held. Those who want to participate can register via the website to get free T-shirts on which the designing can be done.
MO-SO stands for Moderation Society, which means a society whose members live happily in modest or moderate lifestyles based on the popular self-sufficiency economy principle initiated by His Majesty the King. The MO-SO project has been under supervision of the Internal Security Operations Command. It has an alternative title, “Brave the Economic Crisis Relying on the Self-sufficiency Economy Principle”. The MO-SO project encourages people to live in “modest” based on constant “reasoning”. With these two factors, people will be able to build “immunity” to protect themselves from all social and financial problems. DAILY

7-minute wonder A 17-year-old beats 70 mostly university students to complete MS Word tasks in less than 10 minutes to become world champ By Wannapa Phetdee D A I LY X P R E S S
“I
need to know and understand how to use every command of Microsoft Word 2007. Using the programme accurately and taking as short a time as possible are my keys to success,” Kankawin Kowsrihawat, 2009 MOS Olympic World Champion in MS Word 2007, tells Daily Xpress. Taking only seven minutes out of the available 50 to complete MS Word tasks following 26 main instructions, Kankawin became a record breaker who took less than 10 minutes to complete all tasks. The first runner-up was
from Singapore, the second runner-up from Mexico. Continuous practice two months before the competition helped him understand the instructions quickly and complete the tasks accurately.
Hard practice Kankawin practised in the evenings at home after school and on Saturdays at ARIT Co with a coach for an average two-three hours a day. Though he is only a high school student, the 17-year-old, who studies at Bangkok’s Srivikorn School, beat 70 others from across the world, most of them university students.
Kankawin became the MS Word 2007 champion of Thailand in June, so he was given the opportunity to represent the kingdom in the international contest. “When I am given a good opportunity to perform a duty, I rush to grab the opportunity and use it as effectively as possible to reach success,” Kankawin says.
‘Grab opportunities’ He wants other teenagers to do the same, as a good opportunity does not come often. “I won the first-runner up in 2007 and 2008 for MS Word 2000 and 2003 programs, respectively, and decided to try harder to be the champion of Thailand and the world champion. “Bill Gates is my idol. I like his business perspectives and concentration,” says Kankawin. He’s not only proficient in
using the computer program but is also interested in furthering his law studies. He took the pre-degree course at Ramkhamhaeng University’s Faculty of Law in an attempt to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. His other dream is to be a student at Chulalongkorn University’s Computer Engineering faculty, something he aims to see come true. “I love reading, especially books relating to history. I also wish to be a TV news anchor one day,” he says. “Whenever my parents notice I’m interested in something, they really support me. They have given me things to develop my various interests, such as history and law books and computers.” Kankawin says he tries to take in different information, as it will help him cultivate friends with different interests.

DNA tests clear US man after 23 years in prison A F P , Washington
A
Texas man sentenced to life in prison has been released after 23 years behind bars after DNA tests proved his innocence. A judge in Texas released Ernest Sonnier on bond, said lawyer Alba Morales, who works for the Innocence Project advocacy group.
Sonnier, 46, was convicted for a Christmas Eve 1985 rape that tests show he did not commit. “This is a complicated case, but the bottom line is simple: Ernest Sonnier is innocent, and his long nightmare is coming to an end,” Morales said. “We have conducted nine rounds of DNA testing on multiple pieces of evidence for the last 18 months. “Not a shred of evidence ties Ernest to this crime, but DNA testing has identified the two apparent perpetrators,” Morales said.
‘Happy and sad’ Sonnier’s mother Altha Davis said she always knew her son was innocent because they were together when the crime was allegedly committed. “It’s been long for me, so long,” Davis told reporters. “I’m happy and so sad at the same time.” According to the Innocence Project, Texas is the US state with the highest number of prisoners found to be innocent following DNA testing.

Ex-child star: I fathered Jackson’s daughter Mark Lester says he donated sperm to Michael, believes he’s dad of Paris A F P , London
F
ormer child acting star Mark Lester said in a British newspaper yesterday that he donated sperm to Michael Jackson and believes he could be the biological father of the late singer’s daughter Paris. Lester, who played Oliver Twist in the 1968 film musical “Oliver!”, told the News of the World: “I gave Michael my sperm so that he could have kids – and I believe Paris is my daughter.” He said he was willing to take a paternity test to establish whether or not he is
11-year-old Paris’s father. The 51-year-old Briton became friends with Jackson and is godfather to Paris, and Jackson’s two other children, Prince Michael, 12, and sevenyear-old Prince Michael II, known as Blanket.
‘It’s been a secret’ “It’s a been a secret for so long,” Lester told the newspaper. “In 1996 Michael asked me if I would give him my sperm and I said yes. It was a gift to him, no money was paid, it was something I was honoured to do. He
wanted children so badly.” Lester added: “I do feel a definite bonding with Paris and I think there’s a definite possibility that she’s part of me. “I want to have contact with her, Prince and Blanket regardless of whether any or all of them are mine. I think it’s cruel that I’ve now been excluded from them.” He said that since Jackson’s mother Katherine had been granted custody of the children following the singer’s death, all his phone calls and e-mails had gone unanswered. Lester, who has four children himself, said there was a strong resemblance between his 15-year-old daughter Harriet and Paris.

Pirates flee with $2.7m booty – and toothbrushes Somali pirates vanished within minutes of freeing a German cargo ship, taking with them a US$2.7-million (Bt92-million) ransom – and toothbrushes belonging to the entire crew. The pirates released the 20,000 tonne Hansa Stavanger after holding its crew captive for four months. “The pirates took over all the belongings of the 24 crew members including toothbrushes,” said Torsten Ites, captain of the German navy’s Brandenburg frigate, which arrived on the scene within 12 minutes of the pirates’ departure. The crew were in good health and after “putting a smile on their faces” were looking foward to being reunited with their families, he added. Ites said the pirates appeared to have vanished into thin air despite the frigate’s prompt arrival and a helicopter search. AFP

dding to the heroic aura of Dr Krisana Kraisintu, the award-winning inventor of a slew of anti-HIV drugs that she’s ensured are available to everyone in need, “Cocktail” can’t fail to stir the emotions. Veteran director Dangkamon “Khru Fiat” na Pombejra came across the script of “Cocktail”, the 2007 play by Americans Vince LiCata and Ping Chong based on her life and work.
“I already knew about her from TV and magazines and I was tremendously impressed that she’s so strong, dedicated and compassionate,” says Khru Fiat. The play, he says, is “fun, hilarious, tragic, surprising and touching”, particularly in its revelation that selfishness, narrow-mindedness and ignorance were barring the production and distribution of these life-saving drugs. Khru Fiat researched Aids, the drugs, patent law, patient
rights and the HIV situation from Samui to the Congo for his version of “Cocktail”, coming to the stage later this month.
Inside the Actors’ Studio Portraying Dr Krisana is theatre professor Bhanbhassa “Khru Ning” Dhubtien, the only Thai member of New York’s Actors’ Studio. “I asked her not to ‘be’ Dr Krisana, but instead ‘show’ her fight against all odds,” says Khru Fiat. “I think that’s what people can really relate to, rather than just sitting back and watching this superwoman character and
thinking, ‘Well, I’m not Dr Krisana!’” Produced by Chulalongkorn University’s Dramatic Arts
Department, the production is supported by its Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences’ Health Consumer Protection Project.

The 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea in Seattle, Washington, is a Starbucks like no other. It is an experiment by the chain to enter the neighbourhood coffeehouse culture. It operates without using the standard Starbucks logo or other signs of the corporation and is labelled as “inspired by Starbucks” while serving the same coffee. The Seattle-based coffee giant is trying to break the mould by establishing a “stealth” cafe in the city’s Capitol Hill, a move analysts say is an experiment in going back to basics to attract new customers.

The club’s president, Sirina Chokwatana Pavarolarvidya, says the chief criterion for the honour was being able to balance home life and job responsibilities. “Whether their jobs are at
the executive level or the grass roots, all of the awardees manage perfectly both at work and at home.” The recipients included Science Minister Kalllaya Sophonpanich, school owner Darika Punnakan and Supawadee Santayanukul of the private firm Baan Parchab, but Sirina is a fine example of the criterion too. “I’m lucky in love as well as at games,” the mother of two says with considerable modesty. “My great-grandmother raised me while my parents
ran the family business, but it was my parents who taught me to only associate with people who have good minds or are intellectually inclined.” And Pravara Ekaraphamich, Sirina’s 33-year-old daughter, says her mother, now 72 but looking much younger, has passed the “family philosophy” on to her and her elder brother, Panitarn Pavarolarvidya. “Mum and Dad always support us and give us freedom, but they’ve kept an eye on our friends, especially when we were teenagers,” says Pravara,

THE SPORT briefly The skipper of Spanish top flight side Espanyol, Dani Jarque, has died from a heart attack while on a pre-season training camp in Italy. The 26-year-old Jarque died at the hotel where the team were staying in the town of Coviciana. He was discovered in his room after team-mates realised he had not appeared for a meal. The club said that team doctors as well as Italian paramedics tried to revive the midfielder but without success. Espanyol confirmed the diagnosis of heart failure and said the club doctor's attempts to revive the player had failed. "He was talking to his girlfriend when he suddenly began to feel unwell. He told her and then stopped talking. His partner got in touch with the hotel and explained what had happened but it was too late to do anything," de la Cruz told La Sexta television. Jarque had played for Espanyol since the 2002-2003 season. - AFP
Flavia Pennetta capitalised on an error-strewn performance by Maria Sharapova to win their semi-final on Saturday and set up a final against Samantha Stosur at the LA Women's Championships in Carson, California. Pennetta, the 10th-seeded Italian, won 6-2 4-6 6-3 as the former world No 1 Sharapova committed 61 unforced errors and 16 double faults. England pull out of India-hosted event England have pulled out of the World Badminton Championships starting in Hyderabad today over concerns about the squad featuring Olympic silver medallist Nathan Robertson being targeted by a terrorist act. The decision follows media reports of a specific Lashkar-eTaiba terrorist threat against the Championships, a statement issued yesterday by Badminton England, declared.
“Following those reports Badminton England felt the risk to the safety of the team was one they could not take,” the statement continued. Adrian Christy, Badminton England’s chief executive, said: “This was an incredibly tough decision and one we didn’t take lightly. “After the Olympic Games, this is the most prestigious championships in the world but we were not prepared to risk the safety of our [eight] players, coaches and staff in what we felt could have been a very volatile environment.” – AFP

29-17 Wallabies. A deflated Wallabies coach Robbie Deans just shook his head in the post-match press conference, saying the series of errors had made “life very difficult”. “It certainly makes it a lot harder,” he said, adding his team had held up well in the 10 minutes before the end of the first half when the two yellow cards left them with only 13 men. “It was a pretty good response under duress,” he said. “Some very good things came out of this game for us. Our scrum was excellent, our defence was excellent ... [but] we still made unforced errors which provided field position and South Africa is very effective in turning field position into points.” The world champion Springboks, who have been on a winning streak under De Villiers, leave for Perth on August 24 to continue the southern hemisphere championship with two matches against Australia. Home coach Pieter De Villiers cautioned against too much optimism, warning the tournament was only at “half-time” with three matches left to play.

pringbok captain Smit pegs the team’s current game as the winning formula which saw the Wallabies crumble under pressure and concede seven penalties, handing victory to the home team. South Africa steamrolled through the three-match home series, finishing it off with a 2917 triumph over Australia at Newlands on Saturday, with flyhalf Morne Steyn making a record 24 points from penalties against the Wallabies. “It’s just the manner in which we play. If you can say what we did prioritise in the last three games it would be discipline. We pride ourselves on being accurate on the breakdown and not getting involved in those scuffles.” “The game that we play just puts so much pressure it forces a team to step over the line a little bit,” said Smit. Despite putting the first numbers on the scoreboard with a try just two minutes into the match, the Wallabies faced several setbacks including two yellow cards and the injury of captain Stirling Mortlock. However, the pressure mounted on the Australian side whose frequent infringements were well capitalised on by Steyn, fresh from setting a Tri-Nations record in the last match, scoring all 31 points against the

Michael Owen has been overlooked again by England, with coach Fabio Capello prolonging the striker’s international exile despite his strong pre-season with new club Manchester United. But Capello suggested the 29-year-old Owen’s chances of an England recall have been boosted by joining the Premier League champions from Newcastle last month. “I think [Manchester United] is a fantastic chance for Owen to play again with a really important team in the Champions League – it is another chance and that is really important for the player,” Capello said. “He has to play well and score goals. He has to get back to what he was before last season. “It is very important to play with a really important team. He is young, he is only 29. He is not old so why not [return]?” Owen, who scored four goals on United’s preseason tour of Asia, made the last of his 89 international appearances against France in March 2008, early in Capello’s reign. He has since struggled with a series of injuries and

LURKING TIGER Harrington leads Woods by three strokes after the third round
Glover and Stewart Cink, who each had a 68. Harrington has virtually disappeared this season while searching for the right swing. He only recently found the answer and finally has seen some results. He has a 54-hole lead for the first time since the 2007 Irish Open. Woods, already a four-time winner this year, is going after his record seventh victory at the Bridgestone Invitational and his 16th victory in a World Golf Championship. It will be the first time Woods and Harrington have played in the final pairing since the 2006 Dunlop Phoenix on the Japan Golf Tour, which featured a rare collapse by the world’s No. 1 player. Woods blew a three-shot lead with six holes to play, then lost to Harrington on the second playoff hole.

adraig Harrington responded to a late charge by Tiger Woods with one of his own on Saturday, shooting a 3-under 67 to build a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational. Woods put some life into a dreary, rainy afternoon at Firestone with four birdies over his last six holes for a 65 that left him tied for the lead when he walked off the course. It didn’t last long, however, as Harrington ran off three birdies in a four-hole stretch to seize control. And even after the Irishman made a careless bogey on the par-5 16th, he answered with a 20-foot birdie on the 17th to restore his three-shot lead. He was at 10-under 200. Of his 69 victories on the PGA Tour, Woods has only won five times when trailing by three shots or more after 54 holes. Two of those came earlier this year, when he made up a five-shot deficit at Bay Hill and a four-shot deficit at the Memorial. Tim Clark also was tied for the lead early on the back nine. The rain made Firestone play even longer, and Clark had to hit longer clubs, which eventually caught up with him. It got

John Rollins doubled his lead in the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open in Reno, Nevada, shooting a 5-under 67 on Saturday to move four strokes ahead. Rollins, who tied the course record with a 62 on Friday, has a three-round total of 17-under 199, putting him four clear of Ryan Palmer (66). That set up a final-round pairing between two good friends who live a mile apart in Texas and started Saturday by eating breakfast together. Rollins had three birdies and three bogeys on the front nine.
Hosts top medal standings Major-General Charuek Ariratchakaran, the secretary-general of the Olympic Committee of Thailand, expressed satisfaction with Thailand's organisation of the Asian Martial Arts Games, which concluded yesterday, with the hosts topping the medal standings. The curtain came down on the event yesterday with the hosts winning 21 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze. Thailand received the honour from the Olympic Council of Asia to host the games featuring nine sports, including Muay Thai. About 1,500 athletes and officials from 32 countries participated in the weeklong tournament. Although not everyone might be pleased with the tournament organisation, Charuek believed the hosts did a good job. “I’m satisfied with the work we did in hosting the event. I think we were successful as the host country. The OCA also sent a letter to praise our effort.” However, Charuek stated that if there was something to improve in the hosts’ administration, it would be publicity work educating people about the rules of each martial art. Charuek also confirmed that the Asian Martial Arts Games would no longer be staged following the OCA’s resolution last month. DAILY XPRESS

The Thai team tries a double block against a spike from Poland’s Anna Baranska.
Thailand lost their touch in their last match Pool E match against old foes Poland, going down in straight sets in the World Grand Prix preliminaries at the Macao Forum here. The Thai girls yesterday suffered a disappointing 24-26 1325 22-25 loss to Poland, a big letdown here as they lost all their three pool matches. For the Poles, it was a sweet revenge over the Thai side after having lost to them on home
soil in Kielce. The Thai girls began strongly, leading 24-20 in the first set but played inconsistently after that, allowing the Poles to save three set points to tie the score at 24-24. The Poles then stormed on to clinch the hard-fought set 26-24. The Poles were in total control thereafter, winning the next two sets easily at 25-13 25-22. “We played well in the first set as my girls played according to plan. However, the script changed eventually as they gradually lost their confidence,” Thai head coach Kiattipong
Radchatagriengkai commented. The second encounter saw Brazil, the defending and seventime champions and Olympic gold medallists, struggle to beat Asian power China 3-2 (25-21 25-20 19-25 22-25 15-12). After three days here, world No 1 Brazil topped Pool E with six points, winning all their matches, followed by China with five points from two wins and one loss. Poland finished third, collecting four points from one win against two losses, with Thailand in fourth place with three points.
