think we need to change the way we educate our children, because Thai students find study boring and don’t seem to understand its benefits. If we explained what they can get from working hard – better jobs and the ability to think for themselves – perhaps students would be more motivated. Making lessons more fun and easy to understand would help, too.

The LOVE that runs deepest Ahead of Mother’s Day, children and their mothers take time out to share their hopes, worries and feelings for each other with Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong and Wannapa Phetdee of Daily Xpress Taenkhun Jit-issara, TV host and social campaigner
I normally prostrate at my mum’s feet every morning and evening, so Mother’s Day is one of the most important days in my year. I intend to go meritmaking with her at Wat Sothon Wararam Woravihan in Chachoengsao province, then have a family lunch. I’ll also surprise her with a card containing a blessing and picture of us together. My mother still cycles to market and I worry about the risk of accidents. Thanawate ‘Chain’ Limpayaraya of boy band Nice 2 Meet U
Although my mother and I don’t live together, as I’ve left home to work and study in Bangkok, I never forget Mother’s Day. But I have to work this year, so last week I took her on trips to a spa, for shopping and for a meal together. I’ve also bought her a Guan Yin amulet. I recently received an award for being a good son but I’d like to dedicate it to my mum – I owe my success in life to her. Kankawin Kowsrihawat, 17, 2009 MOS Olympic Champion in MS Word
I’m lucky to live with my parents, so we talk and eat together every day and I hug my mother regularly. She’s told me that giving her jasmine garlands is not as important as behaving well. Mum and Dad have always helped me solve problems, and I want to give something back to them. I want to make them proud by doing good deeds for others, such as teaching disad-
vantaged children how to use computers. My mother works hard and I worry about her stress levels. More than anything, I want to see her happy. Nisasinee Kowsrihawat, 44, business owner and also Kankawin’s mother
It’s true we express our love for each other every day in this family, so Mother’s Day is no different. I raised my son to show kindness and do good for those around him, and I hope that stays with him all his life. Children start from zero. As mothers, it is our job to teach them with love and patience so they grow up to be good citizens. Pitchapa Khantitheeratada, 24, gym receptionist
I send my mum an SMS every Mother’s Day telling her how much I love her. Our family dines out almost every year as well. I’ll give her a big hug and a present tomorrow. I used to argue when she criticised my behaviour, but now I know her words were well-intentioned. She wants me to behave well. Now we talk things through calmly. The thing I want to do for her most in life is to be a good citizen and not cause others harm. Wannisa Lahtam, 20, university student
I’ll prostrate to my mum tomorrow and give her a present, then cook her favourite food for a small party at home in the evening. Mother’s Day is really important for our family. She tries to do everything for everybody in the family. Once, I heard
her say: “I’m tired but I want you all to have a bright future.” These words inspired me to study hard to get a good job so that I’ll be able to take care of her in the future. I try to ease her burden by helping her with housework. Giew (not her real name), 24
I won’t have any free time for my mum tomorrow but we celebrated as a family by eating out on Saturday. I prostrated before her with a jasmine garland as I do almost every year. Tears welled up in her eyes and she kissed me on the cheek and gave me a hug, telling me she loved me. Kesinee Wangkhamhang, teacher
Our relatives have organised parties on Mother’s Day for the past five years. We sing karaoke songs together but also use the occasion to speak what’s on our minds, with the condition that no one gets angry. Our family’s relationship has improved since we’ve had the chance to express our feelings in this way. My son studies in another province but we chat through hi5 every day. His graduation will be the happiest day of my life. Amnuai Wongsamran, 52, grocery store owner
My mother and I get a visit from my grown-up children every year on Mother’s Day. They bring presents, and we offer food to monks. This year my children will pick us up from Ratchaburi and take us on a merit-making trip to a Bangkok temple. I’m proud of my two daughters who are graduates at work. But I have two sons who are not old enough to work and I’m still worried about their future.

ost people believe today’s mothers are less patient and tolerant with their children than Thai mothers of 40 years ago. In a recent survey, 61.8 per cent of respondents said mothers’ patience was running thin because a materialistic viewpoint and desire for physical comfort now ruled their lives.
Pressured lives The respondents also pointed out that today’s mothers face more complicated problems and greater pressure in their everyday lives. Conducted by Assumption University’s Academic Network for Community Happiness Observation and Research to mark tomorrow’s Mother’s Day, the survey asked
MANY SAID THEY WOULD SEEK THEIR MUMS’ ADVICE,PROSTATE THEMSELVES AND OFFER GIFTS,FLOWERS OR MONEY ON MOTHER’S DAY TOMORROW. adult members of 1,703 families about their mothers. Just over two-thirds (68.6 per cent) said they were planning a special show of gratitude tomorrow. Many said they would seek their mothers’ advice, prostate themselves and offer gifts, flowers or money. Other favourite ways of showing gratitude include taking their mothers out for a
meal, or on a merit-making or sightseeing trip, as well, of course, as giving them a hug.
Love is communication Speaking at a press conference on mothering, Dr Suriyadev Tripati from the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health said mothers should spend quality time with their children so as to develop close, loving ties.
“Show them your love, offer supportive words and hug them,” he said.
Path to happiness Suriyadev emphasised the part that mothers can play in guiding their children on a path to happiness. “When a mother teaches her children to be givers, they know about a caring community,” he said. “And if she encourages them to take part in positive or religious activities, they won’t be obsessed with materialism or computer games.” He added that if a mother explains to her children that telling lies is a bad thing, they will neither tolerate nor embrace dishonesty. “Mothers should give quality time, love and proper life skills to their children.”
Then came yesterday’s prize draw, which was presided over by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti. Wanon Niwat district resident Maliwan Pilasri, 57, whose granddaughter Praifa won the big prize, said she bought eight panda postcards worth Bt40 for Praifa. After hearing the news that one had been picked out, the family has been celebrating along with neighbours, said Maliwan, adding that some of the money would be kept to pay for Praifa’s education and to make merit. Prasertsak Boontrakulpoonthawee, chief of the panda research project, reported yesterday that Lin Ping frequently touched its mother Lin Hui’s face, which suggested the cub’s eyesight was good, and had also started feeding at regular hours. After more than two-thirds of visitors responded positively to the idea of a panda fan club, Chiang Mai Zoo has decided to open Facebook and Twitter accounts for Lin Ping. An Hi5 account for the cub is open at http://MyLittlePanda.hi5.com.

S
ources “very close” to Michael Jackson’s family denied claims by former British child acting star Mark Lester that he could be the biological father of the singer’s daughter Paris, People magazine reported. Lester, who played Oliver Twist in the 1968 film musical “Oliver!”, reportedly told British tabloid News of the World: “I gave Michael my sperm so he could have kids – and I believe Paris is my daughter.” The 51-year-old Briton, who was a friend of Jackson and is godfather to all three of his
children, said he was willing to take a paternity test to establish whether or not he is the father of 11-year-old Paris. But People, citing sources close to the King of Pop’s family, said Lester has never claimed to be Paris’s father, although they acknowledged he had donated sperm to Jackson, who died on June 25 aged 50. “They twisted his words around. He’s not claiming to be the father of Paris Jackson,” one source told the magazine, which specialises in news about entertainment stars. Jackson family attorney
LESTER HAD REPORTEDLY TOLD NEWS OF THE WORLD: “I GAVE MICHAEL MY SPERM SO THAT HE COULD HAVE KIDS – AND I BELIEVE PARIS IS MY DAUGHTER.”
Londell McMillan downplayed the reports, saying “these are just merely claims with no legal standing whatsoever”. The probate court, he added, has no reason to go against its finding that Jackson was the father of Paris, Prince Michael, 12, and Prince Michael II, 7. The birth mother of the two eldest children is former nurse Debbie Rowe, and the youngest, who is known as “Blanket”, was conceived by a surrogate whose identity has not yet been revealed. Lester “has known Michael for many years and his children play with Michael’s children”, long-time Jackson family associate and former attorney Brian Oxman told People,
adding that Lester had never hinted he was Paris’s father. Marc Schaffel, another Jackson associate, said the pop star made Lester godfather to all three of his children in October 2003. According to Lester, Jackson first confided in him in 1996 that he was desperate to be a father. Both were then aged 37 and Lester already had three children. Jackson agreed and the donation was arranged through a clinic in Harley Street, London, in February 1996. Eight months later, Jackson announced he had married nurse Debbie Rowe and three months later, the couple revealed the birth of Prince.

wealthy Australian socialite and her daughter are “perplexed” over claims their luxury yacht was involved in the mysterious disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann. Rhonda Wyllie and Melissa Karlson have denied any link to the May 2007 incident after investigators appealed for information about a Victoria Beckham-lookalike with an Australian accent.
‘We weren’t in Spain’ The pair, widow and daughter of property tycoon Bill Wyllie, have denied being in Spain on the night the agitated woman allegedly asked a bystander if he was there to deliver her “new daughter”. Their yacht Willpower is believed to have been moored in the Barcelona marina where the encounter took place. “Rhonda and Melissa are perplexed by the media coverage of the past 24 hours, especially given that neither of them was actually in Spain on the night in question,” their spokesman told national news agency AAP.
Devastated British media have said Wyllie was “devastated” over the reports and has agreed to cooperate with investigators. One Australian woman has already been forced to deny any connection to the case after private investigators launched their worldwide appeal and released a computerised image of the woman seen in Barcelona three days after McCann disappeared.

T
he death of an Indian queen who personified a lost era of aristocratic privilege and exotic glamour has sparked a bitter inheritance dispute among her surviving family. Maharani Gayatri Devi was one of the most celebrated beauties of the last century, mixing traditional palace life in the royal city of Jaipur with private aeroplanes, cocktail parties and shopping trips to London.
Idolised in Jaipur She and her dashing husband, the Maharajah of Jaipur Man Singh, whom she married in 1940, were idolised by Jaipur’s local population and the international press, but her death has revealed a family at odds over property and money. Indian newspapers have reported that many relatives are in conflict with each other and that, since Gayatri Devi’s death
One of Britain’s biggest comestic surgery clinics claimed on Sunday to have carried out the nation’s first-ever eyelash transplant on a 19-year-old with a hair-pulling disorder. During a four-hour procedure that cost £3,500 (Bt198,000), hairs were removed from the back of the teenager’s head, then replanted into cuts in the eyelid. The lashes should gradually thicken between four and six months after surgery, said Transform, a network of 22 cosmetic surgery clinics. The teenager suffered from trichotillomania, or trich, an impulsive control disorder in which sufferers compulsively yank hair off their bodies, leaving bald patches. – AFP
on July 29, they have been positioning themselves for the coming battle over her will. The Times of India predicted an “ugly showdown” over a fortune estimated at between US$200 million (Bt6.8 billion) and $400 million, with the lease of the stunning Rambagh Palace in Jaipur likely to be one of many areas of dispute. Gayatri Devi and the maharajah lived in Rambagh before it was converted into an 80-room “heritage” hotel. After her husband died in 1970, she lived in Lilypool, a smaller house in the palace grounds. Gayatri Devi’s only son Jagat Singh died in 1997, and the Times reported that her grandchildren Devraj and Lalitya have been waiting until official mourning finished at the weekend to press their claims. The Statesman newspaper suggested that she may have changed her will at the expense of her two grandchildren.
An Australian man was jailed for five years yesterday for the manslaughter of his partner after he attacked her and left her bleeding and then went out to drink beer and watch sport. David John Reid, 51, was found guilty of manslaughter and recklessly causing injury after he hit 62-year-old Nola Ritter over the head with a ceramic cup for finishing the last drop of cheap wine. Reid, who has struggled with alcoholism, then left their Melbourne home to drink beer and watch sport with his brother after the incident in May 2006, Victoria Supreme Court heard. “You chose to abandon her in her moment of need,” Justice Simon Whelan told Reid, who was shaking as the sentence was handed down. Ritter’s daughter Lindy later said she was pleased with the sentence. – AFP
Gang makes snake bite boy A gang pinned down a 14-yearold boy and attacked him with a snake, forcing the reptile to bite the teenager on the arm, British police said on Sunday. Police said they were interviewing two teenagers over the attack in the southeast English city of Bristol, which they suspect was racially motivated.
The boy was taken to hospital for treatment after the nonvenomous snake, thought to be a python about 1.2 metres long, sank its fangs into his arm, leaving two puncture wounds, police said. “The teenager had been subject to racist comments and then reportedly held down as a snake was held in front of him, which bit his right arm,” a spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said. “The boy was taken to Frenchay Hospital with breathing problems, where he was treated for the injury to his arm.” The boy gave a description of the snake to ambulance officers who contacted experts. – AFP

any filmmakers worry about censorship, but perhaps none more than Ing K, who had a bad experience in 1998 with “My Teacher Eats Biscuits”, which had a screening that was raided by police. “Not only was it banned, I was also grilled by the parliamentary house committee on culture, arts and religious affairs,” Ing says. “My life turned upside down and I didn’t make another film for 10 years.” Her follow-up is “Citizen Juling”, a four-hour tableau of Thai politics and culture that sprang from the 2006 mob beating of schoolteacher Juling Pongkunmul in southern Thailand’s Narathiwat province. It opens tomorrow in a limited theatrical run at House. To make sure her film would make it past censors, Ing was cagey. “Instead of becoming more compromising, I’ve made a conscious decision to be as true to whatever film I’m working on as possible; to always take it as far as it wants to go and let it be whatever it really wants to be, whatever that might mean. I suppose I feel that I should’ve fought harder back then instead of wimping out, and I was fully prepared to fight for ‘Citizen Juling’,” she says.

few of Ing’s fellow filmmakers believed such a strongly political film would be allowed. SKIN DEEP Post-acne blues – in dark splotches My skin broke out and left dark spots all over. What happened, and what can I do about it? The dark spots that appear following acne outbreaks are known to dermatologists as “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation”. The inflammation caused by acne can lead to excessive melanin production because the pigment becomes hyperactive. The dark spots can last for months. This is why it’s so important to treat acne early and properly. If you failed to do so and wound up with dark spots, they can be treated with a topical skin-lightening cream that gradually slows the production of melanin. Another highly effective approach is laser treatment. This selective treatment speeds the spots’ fading when the laser is absorbed by the melanin and breaks it up. The body then dispenses of the melanin pigment. The number of laser treatments needed varies according to the spots’ size and intensity and the depth of the abnormal pigment. But after the first treatment, the area should lighten within three or four weeks. Before you undergo laser treatment, make sure you see a dermatologist. Thanisorn Thamlikitkul, MD, is a member of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery and certified in dermatological laser surgery. Internet radio comes of age What’s better, Pandora or LastFM? A look at the online options By Jay Dougherty DEUTSCHE PRESSEAGENTUR Washington
B
ack at the turn of the century, Internet radio was a novelty. Stations largely mimicked the radio that most of us knew from car stereos, doing little to distinguish themselves as products of the information age. Today, the best Internet radio stations incorporate all that the Web has to offer with a seemingly unlimited palette of music and information.
The result: a product that just might have you turning to the Internet first for your radio listening pleasure – and tapping your feet a lot in the process. Here’s an overview of some of the most innovative and popular radio sites around. Pandora.com
Legend has it that Pandora’s box is full of surprises, and that’s what Pandora.com gives you. The surprises, though, are largely pleasant. Billing itself as the radio station that plays “only music you
like”, Pandora is big on customisation. Once you create a free account, Pandora prompts you to create a new radio station based upon an artist or song that you enjoy. Once created, the station begins playing, typically with the song or artist around which the station was defined. Subsequent musical selections, however, are taken from artists or songs that are likely to be appealing to those who enjoy the artist or song that you originally created the station around.
Pandora makes full use of the information and community available online, too, so you aren’t limited simply to listening to the songs as they play. You aren’t limited to listening at the computer. Pandora Mobile, also free, is available as an installable application on BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm Pre and Windows Mobile. Last.fm
Last.fm (www.Last.fm), like Pandora, is built around the concept of customisable radio: you define the artist or group you like, and Last.fm picks the selections – both from the artists themselves and from those that are similar in genre or mood. Last.fm tends to play more songs from an individual artist before moving on to selections from other, similar artists. Last also distinguishes itself by incorporating video heavily into its interface. Still clips of artists are panned and zoomed around the YouTube-like video window for the duration of each song. This may be an appealing feature to you or a distraction. The good news is that you can turn off the video slideshow if you wish. A dedicated Videos section gives you instantaneous access to the latest music videos from artists of all genres. Because there’s no registra-
tion required, you’ll be up and running with Last.fm faster than you will with Pandora. The downside is that Last won’t remember your preferences from computer to computer unless you sign up. Last.fm is also not as readily accessible on mobile devices as is Pandora. And finally, Last.fm is not free. After a trial period of 30 songs, Last.fm charges $3 per month. AccuRadio.com
Compared to Pandora and Last, AccuRadio (www. AccuRadio.com) comes across as something of a throwback to the way Internet radio used to be. With pre-defined stations and pseudo announcers, AccuRadio is more similar to traditional radio stations than it is to the customisable fare on Pandora. But thanks to its wide selection of existing channels and stellar sound, AccuRadio stands out as one of the best of the old breed. Using AccuRadio is simple. You can either choose a genre or type the name of an artist or album into the Search field, and then select from a list of stations that are likely to feature the music you most enjoy. Stations open in a small browser window, which can be moved unobtrusively to one side of your monitor or minimised altogether.

All Blacks recall fly-half Carter Star fly-half Dan Carter was yesterday recalled to the All Blacks squad for the remainder of their Tri-Nations campaign six months after suffering a torn Achilles tendon. Carter has played in domestic games over the past three weeks and declared himself fit to return to international duty. “He is a key member of the All Blacks, has recovered well from his injury and has made a great return to rugby so now is the right time to bring him back into the squad,” coach Graham Henry said. The 27-year-old Carter, rated the world’s best pivot, was injured playing for the French side Perpignan against Stade Francais in February while on a New Zealand Rugby Union-sanctioned break from Super 14 duties. – AFP
Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, last year’s National Hockey League Rookie of the Year, was arrested early on Sunday after an altercation in his hometown with a cab driver. Buffalo television station WIVB reported that Kane pleaded not guilty to charges of felony robbery and misdemeanours of theft of services and criminal mischief that both he and a cousin face following the incident. Kane, 20, caught a cab from the city’s nightclub district and a police report says the driver claimed he was punched and hit by two men because he did not have 20 cents in change for them, leaving cuts to his face and damaging his glasses. – AFP
Dixon takes the lead in IndyCar Series New Zealand’s Scott Dixon, the reigning IndyCar Series champion, reclaimed the season points lead on Sunday at Lexington, Ohio with a victory in the Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio for his fourth triumph of the year. Dixon set a record for the 14year-old series with his 20th career triumph, although that fails to include much of Indycar history dating back a centu-
ry. Dixon cruised to victory by 27 seconds at the 13-turn, 2.258mile road course. – AFP
Ashraful ton sets up Bangladesh win Bangladesh crushed hosts Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the first of five one-day internationals at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo Sunday. Zimbabwe, put in to bat after Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field, were restricted to 207 before Mohammad Ashraful’s third one-day century lifted the tourists to the win. The hosts’ Mark Vermeulen scored an impressive 92 returning after five years in the wilderness. – AFP

ir Alex Ferguson claimed Michael Ballack should have been sent off for the foul on Patrice Evra that ignited a furious row during Chelsea’s Community Shield victory over Manchester United on Sunday. Ballack pole-axed Evra with a cynical elbow during the second half at Wembley and Chelsea then ignored United’s appeals to allow the defender to receive treatment by breaking to score through Frank Lampard. The Blues eventually won 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to end United’s two-year reign as
Community Shield holders and Ferguson was quick to point the finger at Ballack and referee Chris Foy. “If the referee sees it properly it is a red card. He has clearly elbowed him. The referee had a clear view of it, he was in line, he should have seen it,” Ferguson said. “The referee made a rod for his own back. He stopped play twice, once when Nani was tackled, then on the second occasion Ballack went down, which we’ve seen before! The ref said it was a serious incident when Ballack went down but he was up straight away. “So I don’t under-
stand why he didn’t do it with Evra. When you see the replay you see Ballack has elbowed him. But it’s hard to blame the Chelsea players for carrying on. It’s a professional game.” Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea’s new manager, agreed that his players had done nothing wrong by opting to carry on playing rather than kicking the ball out. “A referee can stop the play and also the players can put out the ball,” Ancelotti said. “They didn’t see Evra on the pitch so they continued. If they had seen him a Chelsea player would have put the ball out.”

IF THE REFEREE SEES IT PROPERLY IT IS A RED CARD.HE HAS CLEARLY ELBOWED HIM.THE REFEREE ... SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT. Sir Alex Ferguson Chelsea midfielder Lampard added: “Anyone should look at the rules. It’s up to the referee to stop it but Man United just
stopped when their man was down. “It’s in the rules, when the referee stops it he stops it. We carried on and I’m sure United would have done the same in that position.” Ferguson’s mood wasn’t improved by the news that Portgual winger Nani, who had scored in the first half, had dislocated his shoulder after falling under a tackle from John Terry. Nani will miss Portugal’s friendly against Liechtenstein on Wednesday and could be sidelined for several weeks. Ancelotti was pleased to win a trophy in his first match but he revealed he delivered a halftime dressing down to his players. “I’m very happy now for sure, but I was not happy at half-time. In the first half Manchester played very well and we didn’t play for 30 minutes.”

dropped off the computer,” said Murray, returning to the game after five weeks off following Wimbledon. “I only have my US Open points to defend.” Murray, who lost to Roger Federer in last year’s US Open final, has not allowed the possibilities to affect his game. “It really doesn’t feel any different to me but I’m in a good position to challenge for the number two ranking,” he said. “I’ll have to play well. I have a tricky draw but I would love to get the ranking. There is still a lot of tennis to be played before I could get there. Murray also warned: “If you get caught up in the rankings, you start to lose matches and start hoping that other guys lose. “If I win my own matches, the rankings will take care of themselves.”

Scotsman Andy Murray is preparing to challenge Rafael Nadal’s world No 2 ranking, but it will take special circumstances for the third seed to see his dream come true. Murray pondered the possibilities on Sunday at the ATP Montreal Masters, where he opens after a bye against either Taiwan’s Lu Yen-hsun or Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. Should holder Nadal – testing his knee tendinitis after two and a half months out of the game – fail to win more than a round or two, a Murray semi-final showing could send the 22-year-old Briton to the highest ranking of his career ahead of his title defence at the Cincinnati Masters the following week. “My [2008 Canadian semi-final] points have

Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro won back-to-back Legg Mason Tennis Classic titles with a 3-6 7-5 7-6 (6) win over top-seeded Andy Roddick in Sunday’s final. After 14 points in the third-set tiebreaker and 2 hours of tennis, Roddick and del Potro stood at the net, waiting for the scoreboard to tell them if they would continue to play. Del Potro had apparently won the match with a crosscourt forehand winner, but after Roddick challenged the call, both players expected play to continue. “I actually thought it might have been out, and I asked him and he said it might have been out,” Roddick said. “So imagine the disappointment when it wasn’t.” The replay system confirmed the ball hit the outer portion of the sideline, giving defending champion del Potro the title. Del Potro raised both arms above his head in celebration before embracing Roddick across the net. It was the first loss for the top-seeded Roddick in four Washington finals. Roddick won the tournament in 2001, 2005 and 2007. Roddick had not played in a match since losing an epic Wimbledon final to Roger Federer on July 5.

ASHES SERIES
Agent says all-rounder was devastated by decision not to play him in 4th Test A F P , Leeds, England
A
ndrew Flintoff declared himself fit before being left out by England ahead of their crushing fourth Test loss to Australia, the all-rounder’s agent told Monday’s edition of The Times. Andrew Chandler said team management were not satisfied that the fast bowler and hardhitting batsman, who has been struggling with a knee injury throughout what he has said will be his final Test series, would last the distance. As it turned out, England were beaten inside three days at Headingley, losing by an innings and 80 runs as Australia levelled the Ashes at 1-1. Flintoff, 31 was due to see a knee specialist yesterday as he
bids to make the side for the fifth and final Test at the Oval, which starts on August 20. But Chandler was adamant he could have played at Headingley. “I’ve never seen anybody as low as Flintoff was on Thursday night when he was told he would not be selected,” Chandler told The Times. “He told them that he was fit enough to get through, that he felt no different to how he felt at Edgbaston and that he could get through and do his bit. They didn’t want him. “He was prepared to do whatever it takes, was prepared to put whatever needed to be put into his knee. “The whole point of announcing his retirement when he did was to clear his head and
prepare to do whatever needed to be done to play the final Test matches of his career. “He just didn’t see it coming. He wanted to play and they didn’t want him, and he didn’t see that coming at all.” Flintoff ’s pace bowling led England to a 115-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s and top-scored for the hosts in the drawn third Test at Edgbaston. “What they didn’t take into account during Thursday’s practice was that there was no adrenaline,” he said. “That was why he looked as though he was struggling so much and why he became so much worse on the final day at Edgbaston, when it was clear the game could not be won. “He was hurting at Lord’s but the adrenaline got him through. It would have got him through this week as well.”

TIGER WINS TIME TRIAL AP, Akron, Ohio
T
iger Woods won the Bridgestone Invitational with an 8-iron that stopped a foot from the cup on the 16th hole and a 5-under 65. He believes Padraig Harrington lost because of a stopwatch. Even after his 70th career victory, Woods was upset on Sunday that he and Harrington were told on the 16th hole that they would be put on the clock for being out of the position from the group ahead of them. Harrington, while not blaming the slow-play policy, conceded that he was rushed during a series of shots in the rough on his way to making a triple bogey, going from a one-shot lead to a three-shot deficit. Woods, who won by four strokes, was more direct in his comments to the Irishman as they shook hands on the 18th
green. “Like I was telling him out there, ‘I’m sorry that John got in the way of a great battle,’ because it was such a great battle for 16 holes,” Woods said. “And unfortunately, that happened.” John Paramor, chief referee for the PGA European Tour and one of the international officials at this World Golf Championship event, made no apologies for playing the rules. He said the final pairing was 13 minutes over their time limit after 11 holes and could have been put on the clock, except that a player well ahead of them was struggling on the 16th with various rulings. When they reached the 16th green, Paramor said Woods and Harrington were 17 minutes behind schedule. “The 16th hole had opened up before they cleared the 15th green,” he said.

American John Rollins shot an even par 72 to win the Reno-Tahoe Open by three strokes on Sunday in reno, Nevada to post his third career USPGA victory. The 34-year-old Rollins had an eagle and rolled in three birdies to finish at 17under-par 271 for a three-shot victory over Jeff Quinney and Scotsman Martin Laird. “It’s huge. It was a struggle out there though,” said Rollins. “I had to battle a lot of emotions. It was kind of an up and down day.” “I felt like I started off kind of poor, then started to right it, then started to make mistakes again,” Rollins said. “It was a hang on kind of day and I am just proud that I managed to come out on top.” Quinney shot a six-under 66, while Laird fired a threeunder 69 at the Monteux Golf and Country Club. They tied for second at 14-under-par 274. AP
