Visit Dusit Zoo for ‘7 amazing things’

The colourful douc langur cub was delivered on June 18, but its gender is yet to be identified. Douc langurs are on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Animals. They have five colours – grey, dark grey, white, yellow and reddish brown. The zoo is home to 32 douc langurs, including the newborn. Each is worth more than Bt10 million. Douc langurs are one of the zoo’s seven amazing things, so if you visit the langurs, it’s recommended that you take a look at other highlights as well. The last herd of Thai browantlered deer is found only at the zoo now. And the only Albino common barking deer in the world also dwells there. If you don’t have enough money or time to visit the most-popular giant panda family in Chiang Mai, you can get up close with other kinds of pandas – the only pair of red pandas in Thailand can be seen at the Dusit Zoo. A historical teak tree has also been grown in the zoo. It was presented by King Rama V to Prince Valdimar of Denmark to boost bilateral relations. A stone inscription was also presented to the prince to mark his visit. Another historical learning area is the “World War II Air Raid Shelter”. And any visitor to the zoo should not miss the magnificent Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall. DAILY

A question of surrogacy Taiwan warns Thailand-based firm Babe 1001 that it is illegal to seek infertile-parent clients in its country D A I LY X P R E S S
B
angkok-based Babe 1001 company has advertised on the Internet that it provides the services of surrogate mothers to those who are infertile – despite there being no law that allows the procedure in Thailand. Taiwan warned the company against seeking infertile-parent clients there because Taipei’s law bans using surrogate mothers to produce babies, according to the local Apple Daily yesterday. Babe 1001 has been targeting potential Taiwan clients for quite some time through its Chinese-language ad on the
Internet. The ad lists the telephone number of Babe 1001’s headquarters as one in Bangkok, with a telephone number for its branch located in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Says the company on its website: “We provide the best solution for you, no matter what problem you have. We can create the finest procreation conditions for your baby.” The cost of the surrogacy programme is about US$46,000 (Bt1.5 million), but it can vary depending on actual demand and the situation. The company does mention
on its website that the surrogacy contract is not legal in Taiwan, but goes on to state that it is not illegal in the country where the company is located. The Apple Daily also reported that the doctor who introduced infertile parents to a foreign surrogate mother faced losing his licence and being fined up to T$250,000 (Bt255,000). The Medical Council of Thailand says there is no regu-
lation allowing a private company to carry out the business of seeking and hiring surrogate mothers. But the council accepts that there are a few companies involved in the business, with most of them getting the procedure done in medical schools. Some of the women who want to have a baby from a surrogate mother have rushed to a developed country such as the United States, where surrogacy is legal. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is now drafting a surrogate law, which will allow an infertile woman to have a baby from a surrogate mother. The draft is now in the hands of the Council of State, before it is passed on to the cabinet.

Europe’s biggest jackpot finds a winner Residents of a village in central Italy were celebrating after a ticket sold there produced the richest jackpot in European lottery history – nearly ¤148 million (Bt7.2 billion). After weeks of mid-summer lotto madness in Italy, the winning ticket was sold in a bar in the village of Bagnone, central Tuscany. The identity of the winner – who is now ¤147,807,299.08 richer, according to the Agicos agency – is being kept secret. But Italian television pictures showed emotions running high in the picturesque village of only 2,000 inhabitants. “We were watching the football match where Milan were playing when someone came in saying that we had won the SuperEnalotto,” the bar’s manager, Annamaria Ciampini, said. “We immediately changed the channel and we started to hear the name of the village. What more can I say? I didn’t win and I don’t know who did,” she added. AFP
Adult videogamers may face health risks Depression, wellbeing are worse than in non-gamers, study says A F P , Washington

dult videogamers may suffer higher levels of depression and weigh more than non-gamers, according to a study. Conducted by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Emory University and Andrews University, the study found “measurable correlations between video-game playing and health risks”. The study – “Health-Risk Correlates of Video-Game Playing Among Adults” – is being published in the
October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The researchers surveyed 562 adults ranging in age from 19 to 90 in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington state. A total of 45.1 per cent of those surveyed reported playing videogames. The Seattle-Tacoma area was selected because it has the highest Internet usage level in the country. Female videogame players reported greater depression and lower health status than female non-players while male videogame players reported a
higher body mass index (BMI) and more Internet use time than male non-players. “As hypothesised, healthrisk factors – specifically, a higher BMI and a greater number of poor mental-health days – differentiated adult videogame players from non-players,” said Dr James Weaver of the CDC. “Video-game players also reported lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked videogame playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status, and to mental-health concerns,” he said. The study is one of the first on the health-risk factors of videogame playing in adults.
Big luxury cars are often targeted by thieves, but in Amsterdam compact cars have become sought-after objects. A few locals have taken to pushing small cars into the city’s canals in a practice that has become known as “Smart tipping”, named after the popular European two-person car, the Smart. Hardly a weekend passes without a small car falling victim to youngsters stoned on hashish and beer. De Telegraaf reported a story about small car-owner Casper de Jong who discovered it’s not safe to park along the city’s canals. De Jong parked his vehicle in the middle of Amsterdam’s red light district. It probably did not take much effort for the perpetrators to tip his Smart car into the canal. De Jong should have known that he was testing fate. “A few weeks earlier the same thing happened to my business partner. Both cars were write-offs.” – DPA

Model prays before caning A Muslim model who is to be caned for drinking alcohol said she is planning a pilgrimage to Mecca and seeking solace in prayer as she prepares to face her punishment this week. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, will be the first woman to be caned under Islamic law in Malaysia, a moderate Muslim-majority country where the landmark case has caused a national sensation. She was sentenced to six strokes after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel nightclub last year, and is expected to receive her punishment this week at a women’s prison. Kartika cried when the verdict was handed down last month, but in an interview at her home in Kuala Kangsar, a small Malay village, the slim and soft-spoken Kartika was composed about her fate. “Sometimes I feel sad and stressed as I have tarnished my family’s name. But now after spending time reading the Koran, I feel calm and am not afraid of being caned,” she said. Officials from the sharia religious court are expected to detain Kartika today, and take her to prison where she will undergo a medical check. “I do not know how the caning will be done. No one seems to have any details,” she said. – A F P

Ryan Alexander Jenkins, 32, was charged with murder on Thursday after days of being considered a “person of interest” in the gruesome killing of 28-year-old Jasmine Fiore, but is still on the run. Two Indian presidential bodyguards get life for rape A F P , New Delhi

n Indian court sentenced two presidential bodyguards to life imprisonment for raping a teenage university student in New Delhi six years ago, a report said. The attack in the heart of the city on the 17-year-old girl sparked outrage across India as it involved soldiers belonging to an elite unit at the presidential palace, a tourist highlight in the capital. Two other presidential bodyguards convicted of abducting and robbing the student were sentenced to ten years each in jail, the Press Trust of India report said. The victim, who was strolling in the park with a male friend, was attacked by the four soldiers in broad daylight in October 2003, the prosecution said. While two of them stood guard, the other two raped her, the court was told. The park lies within a kilometre of the British-built, red-stone presidential palace, which is guarded by hundreds of soldiers and policemen. There are often reports of rape in India but many women are reluctant to complain to police because of the stigma surrounding the crime and fears it could jeopardise their chances of marriage.
THE INDIAN EXPRESS NEWSPAPER DESCRIBED THE RAPE AS ‘AN UNPRECEDENTED STAIN’ ON THE PRESIDENT’S BODYGUARD,WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 1773 BY BRITAIN’S GOVERNOR-GENERAL WARREN HASTINGS. Members of the armed forces have been dogged in recent years by accusations of sexual misconduct. The Indian Express newspaper described the October 2003 rape as “an unprecedented stain” on the President’s Bodyguard, which was founded in 1773 by Britain’s GovernorGeneral Warren Hastings.

Manhunt on Jenkins, who recently vied with 16 other contestants on the VH1 television show “Megan Wants a Millionaire”, is now “the subject of an international manhunt”, said Tom Monson, police chief in Buena Park, a town 45 kilometres south east of Los Angeles. He is suspected of having fled to his native Canada, where police are now searching for him. Toronto police had received a tip-off from federal police in Vancouver that a person resembling Jenkins was on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver
to Toronto, arriving at 11.30pm local time. Authorities believe he may have crossed the Canadian border from a remote area in northwestern Washington state, abandoning his 2003 BMW SUV and a boat trailer at a boat launch in Blaine, Washington state, and travelling over water to Point Roberts, then on foot into Canada. According to reports, Jenkins’ mother Nada lives in Vancouver. Officials said it was Jenkins himself who reported Fiore missing on Saturday, the day the suitcase was found by a man searching the garbage dumpster for recyclable bottles. He has not been seen since. Fiore and Jenkins had married in Las Vegas earlier this year after his stint on the VH1 reality show, but according to media reports the marriage was annulled a short time later.

Tata wore a daring metallic mini-dress for her music video of ‘Ready for Love’, the title track and first single from her new album. The video was directed by South Korean star-maker Rainmaker Cho.
The title track, which has been airing for a couple of weeks, “feels cool and energetic like in the ’60s”, Tata says, saying she learned the “big voice” techniques of American R&B singers Aretha Franklin, Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. “My Bloody Valentine” will be the follow-up single. “Mission is You” and “Shine Like a Superstar” are Silom Soi 2-style rousers. “Burning Out” and “Suffocate” get melancholy. “Ugly” is a return to the catchy form of “Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy” and “Love is the Law” sounds like Madonna’s “Rain”. Tata calls “Boys Will Be Boys” her favourite track, and “Exposed” the “opposite of her real life”.

iving rooms these days have to be multifunctional places – an area where you can relax, read, watch television, play games and sometimes even work. It’s not easy to balance everything and still have an attractive space. In fact it’s the equivalent of creating a little piece of art.
Step 1: What a living room needs Sofa, coffee table, shelf: A wide range of furniture can go in the living room, but nothing says they must. What’s needed and what is wanted, more so than in other rooms, are individual choices. Living rooms commonly have souvenirs from various vacation destinations collecting dust on the shelves. Add to that furniture and accessories that have gathered over the years and that don't necessarily fit together. People who go on holiday to other continents
often have items from Africa in one corner, knickknacks from Asia in the other. Typically, there's a piece of furniture that’s been inherited and a few new acquisitions from a furniture store. There are cases in which these items together hit the mark, but these are exceptions. Usually, it looks like a pot of stew with too many ingredients. Always remember less is more and a tidy, consistent look forms a good base. And when a bit of North African flair arrives in the home after a vacation in Morocco, that means it’s time for the Buddha statues and the silk pillows brought back from Thailand to move out.
Step 2: Create defined areas The more events and parties that take place on in a home, the more important it is to define individual areas. Try deep-pile, comfortable rug to separate it the living room or family room from another area that is more func-

Your charm will take someone by storm. Before getting all worked up over nothing, make sure that you want the type of relationship being offered. You are in the driver’s seat and have the right to say no if you want to. Be selective.
Step 3: Place lights skilfully
CANCER June 21-July 22
You’ll be sizzling hot when it comes to love and emotional matters. State your case, your intentions and your desires and you will get a favourable response. Love is a heartbeat away and a stable and lasting relationship within reach.
The furniture has been carefully selected, the accessories have been properly matched, and despite all that, the room still hasn’t come together. When this happens, the room’s lighting often is to blame. Soft lights from multiple sources will work better than central ceiling lights.
LEO July 23-August 22
You don’t have to settle for someone who is following you around. Look outside your immediate surroundings and take part in something that interests you. You will find someone more suitable in every way possible. VIRGO August 23-September 22
Step 4: What to avoid
Someone you trust will feed you false information. Don’t let your pride or your gullibility lead you astray. Ask questions and make your own assessment regarding who is good for you and who is not. A change of heart is apparent.
All too often, living rooms are taken over by children's things. Stuffed animals lie on the sofa, puzzles occupy space on the bookshelf and toy cars sit on the television. Children should learn early to keep things in their rooms, and parents should be consistent about taking things out of the living room to avoid letting a giant mound of toys grow.
LIBRA September 23-October 22
You’ll meet someone who will offer you a unique type of relationship. Consider the long-term outcome before you decide to stand by someone who may not think the same way you do or share your values. There is a price to pay. SCORPIO October 23-November 21
Let your emotions lead the way and you'll score big in the romance department. Someone with similar interests and a serious demeanour will capture your heart and show you how gratifying it can be to meet someone who mirrors you. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21
Whatever you do, avoid any sort of commitment or conversation that may put you in an uncompromising emotional position. Uncertainty regarding the way you feel or the way someone feels about you will cause heartache. CAPRICORN December 22-January 19
An instant infatuation may be exciting but it isn’t likely to end the way you want. Protect your heart and you will avoid having to backtrack when you realise that you’ve let someone without much substance get too close for comfort. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18
Your open and imaginative way of expressing your likes and dislikes will attract the attention of someone who can help you fulfil your personal dreams. Prepare to spend some time getting to know this person a whole lot better.

Fergie expects 100-goal Rooney to get even better
A
lex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney will score “many more” for Manchester United after he joined a select band of players to net 100 goals for the club. Rooney reached the milestone after opening the scoring during his side’s 5-0 victory at Wigan on Saturday. The England striker ended the match with two goals as United’s season exploded into life after a low key start, which included a surprise 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Burnley. “It’s great for Wayne,” said Ferguson after United made it two wins from their first three Premier League games. “He’s still a young lad and some players are at a club for many years and don’t reach that total. Because of his age I’m sure he’ll go on and score many more
goals for us. He’s a very important player for us.” United paid Everton £20 million Rooney in 2004 ago but the 23-year-old has easily repaid that fee over the years. He has shone from the moment he opened his United goal account with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League at Old Trafford. Rooney could have left the DW Stadium with four goals but for two fine saves from Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland. Ferguson also singled out Michael Owen for praise after the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal in a United shirt. Owen produced a fine finish for his side’s fourth goal which will have done his chances of earning an England recall no harm at all.“Strikers have to score and when they don’t they think it’s the end of the world,” added Ferguson. “Michael needed a goal. It was a fantastic goal. He has proved
over the last decade that he is one of the best strikers in England.”
PSG, Lyon set French pace Paris St Germain, seeking only their third title and first since 1994, and Lyon are setting the pace in the French League after both posted key away successes on Saturday. Marseille lost ground following a 1-1 draw at Rennes where the Mediterranean club missed a hatful of chances to make it a three-way overnight tie at the top on seven points with PSG and Lyon. Peguy Luyindula’s opener and further goals from Mevlut Erding and Christophe Jallet were enough to send PSG joint top with Lyon following a 3-2 win at Valenciennes, for whom Siaka Tiene and Rudy Mater were on target. Lyon raced past Auxerre 3-0 with Jean-Alain Boumsong, Jean II Makoun and Miralem Pjanic all hitting the net for Claude Puel’s side.
hiang Mai-native Supoj Saenla joined the elite band of players who have won the national crown twice, defeating Kobkit Palajin 5-1 in the SangSom Nong Khai Cup final yesterday. There are not many players who had achieved the feat and even Thai snooker great Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm (James Wattana to international fans) has won the title only once in his long career. Supoj entered the final as pre-match favourite and he lived up to the expectations of the large local army of snooker fans, who had thronged the venue. Supoj, who won his first national title in 2007, played brilliantly throughout the tournament, compared to his younger opponent who is now on a comeback trail and still remains a pale shadow of his best. Fireworks, that were expected from the two finalists, never materialised, but the two were still able to produce some quality snooker that kept the crowd engrossed in the match throughout. With the exception of two frames, all were evenly contested with Kobkit surprisingly opting to go for safety shots more often than he normally does. Supoj picked the first frame on the black and had it tough in clinching the second. He was a bit more in control in the third to open up a 3-0 margin. Kobkit then showed the crowd that he can score freely when opportunity comes his way and produced a break of 92 to take the fourth frame. However, that proved to be Kobkit’s last hurrah as Supoj walked away with the next two frames to win the match and the crown. Supoj received the winner’s prize of Bt100,000.

American Riley,Spaniard Garcia share the lead at rainy Wyndham Championship Sergio Garcia and Chris Riley were both 13 under par through 10 holes to share the clubhouse lead when play was stopped midway through the third round of the rainplagued Wyndham Championship on Saturday. Steve Marino, Fred Couples, Kevin Stadler and Justin Rose were 12 under and Brandt Snedeker and Bill Haas were 11 under when play was suspended due to dark-
ness. Tournament officials said the round was scheduled to resume early yesterday. “These are tough weeks,” Riley said. “Seems like we’ve been doing this all year but, you know, going to bed at 10pm and waking up at 5am to play golf ... we’re athletes. So I guess we can do it.” During yet another long day with abbreviated play at the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country
Sergio Garcia lines up a putt on the fourth hole.
Club – where two weather delays combined to last nearly 5 1/2 hours – there were a few highlights. Marino, who started the round six strokes off the pace, had seven birdies to vault up the leaderboard – including one on the par-3 No 16 in which his tee shot landed 7 inches from the flagstick. He shot 63 to move to 198, and was one of 24 players to finish the round.
“We were talking about it when we went back out on (No 14), if we were going to make it or not,” Marino said. “We knew it was going to be close. The guys in front of us motored and we made it. I’m really thrilled about that.” Couples, the US President’s Cup captain who’s still considering his final picks, birdied four of his first eight holes to move into contention for his first victory since 2003.

urope rallied to win the fourballs and split the foursomes to finish in an 8-8 tie with the United States going into the last day of the Solheim Cup on Saturday. The Americans need 14 points to win a third straight Solheim Cup, while Europe need 14 1/2 points to claim it on US soil for the first time. “We won today. We’ve got back that point that we were behind, and it’s all looking good for tomorrow,” Europe’s Becky Brewerton said. “We all feel confident.” With singles on Sunday, the Americans are confident of retaining the cup. The US have lost only three times in singles. The last time was 2003, also the last time Europe won the cup. “I’m just really proud of them the way they came back. It was not looking too good for us for a while,” US captain Beth Daniel said. “They really rallied in the afternoon, that was huge. Also, it should be a huge momentum swing for us to come back that way. They feel like they’re ahead, and they should feel that way.” Michelle Wie’s and Christina Kim’s easy 5-and-4 victory over Helen Alfredsson and Tania Elosegui in the opening fourball match looked as if it might be the start of a big day for the Americans. While Wie and Kim partied at the green, the rau-

Europe rallied to win the fourballs 2 1/2-11/2 and tie up the tournament, then took an early lead in foursomes with two easy wins. And just when it looked as if Wie and Cristie Kerr had the tie comfortably in hand, everybody came unglued, which made for some ugly, uncomfortable golf as the sun went down over Rich Harvest Farms. Wie and Kerr were 2 up on Maria Hjorth and Anna Nordqvist until Hjorth made a 3-footer for birdie on the 16th. Kerr is one of the steadiest players on the US team, which made her decision on 17 all the
more surprising. Wie’s tee shot had gone into the rough on the right side, and there was a big pond between Kerr and the green. Kerr decided to go for it and, sure enough, the ball skipped through the water, nearly hitting one of the fake swans in the middle. Wie mishit the next shot and it flew the green, landing in deep rough. Kerr made a nice chip that skirted the hole, but it wouldn’t drop. On most holes, that would mean a loss. But not on this one. Hjorth went in the sand off the tee and Nordqvist muffed the approach shot. Needing to make a 6-footer for bogey and the hole, Hjorth missed. Wie then rolled in a 3-footer to halve
the hole. The Americans caught more breaks on 18. Kerr’s drive hit a tree, and kicked out into the fairway. She hit a bad chip shot, and it flew the green, leaving Wie with an 18-foot downhill putt. The ball curved around the edge of the cup and the US team started to jump to its feet to celebrate. But the ball wouldn’t drop, leaving the players stunned. All Hjorth had to do was make a 6-footer, and Europe would have halved the match. But she couldn’t do it, and the Americans had the 1-up win. Despite the scrappy end, Wie was clearly the American who carried the day. “She was so pumped up, I was worried about it,” Daniel said.
weden’s Peter Hedblom shot a six-under 64 on Saturday to take the sole lead after the third round of the KLM Open. Hedblom has a 14-under 196 total to sit two strokes ahead of Ireland’s Peter Lawrie ahead of yesterday’s final round. Lawrie shot a 65 and is one shot ahead of defending champion Darren Clarke (67), with Jamie Donaldson, Kenneth Ferrie, Sam Little and Terry Pilkadaris all trailing at 10 under. “The start I got off to calmed me down a little bit, and after that I started to feel really good,” Hedblom said. “If I can keep playing like this, I’ll be very happy.” Clarke, bidding to become the first player to defend the title since 1978, shared the lead with Heblom at halfway stage.
Bryant has 2-shot lead Brad Bryant shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke advantage over Mike Reid into the final round of the Jeld-Wen Tradition in Sunriver, Oregon, on Saturday. Bryant padded his lead to go 15 under after three rounds at Crosswater Golf Club. He has stayed atop the leaderboard after shooting a careerbest 10-under 62 in the opening round, matching a tournament record. WINNING AGAIN Pato, Ronaldinho help Milan overcome pre-season blues AFP, Rome
razilians Pato and Ronaldinho proved there is life after Kaka as they inspired AC Milan to a 2-1 victory at Siena in coach Leonardo’s opening Serie A match in charge of the Italian giants on Saturday. Pato scored a brace but it was his Brazilian compatriot Ronaldinho who created both goals to help countryman Leonardo begin his reign with a win and instantly ease the pain felt by Kaka’s switch to Real Madrid. The teenage Pato paid tribute to his strike partner. “Everyone’s talking about Ronaldinho, but he’s brilliant, he’s number one,” he said. “He creates many chances for the other forwards. We’re really happy with him, he’s on his way back and it’s easy playing with him.” It was a marked turnaround for Milan, who had lost eight out of 11 pre-season friendlies and although this success against relative minnows will not be decisive in the scudetto race, Ronaldinho’s performance inspired some hope. He may not have his explosive burst of pace of old, but he was incisive and creative, and almost scored with an ingenious second-half bicycle kick. Leonardo praised his team for turning around their poor preseason form. “I’ve just seen a very positive response,” said the coach. “And most of all great pride following a pre-season that wasn’t great. scouting network. “Peter Reid was in the directors’ box at Birmingham and we are hoping to do a deal in the coming week to bring him in as my number two,” said Pulis. “He wants to come back to England. My current assistant, David Kemp, is going to South America to look after our scouting options down there.” The Potters boss added: “Peter is a typical Scouser - a very bubbly bloke who I have known for a long time. We need characters around the place with his experience. There is a minor issue about securing his release from his job with the Thailand FA but we don’t believe that will present a problem for us.”
Samuel Eto’o says Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola never told him why he was sold to Inter Milan. The Cameroon striker moved to Inter as part of the deal that took Zlatan Ibrahimovic the other way despite scoring more than 30 goals for Barcelona last season, including the opener in the Champions League final win against Manchester United. “I was waiting to be told the reason why they wanted me to go, but there wasn’t one,” Eto’o said yesterday on French television. “I never got an answer and I’m not waiting for one anymore. For me, it’s over.” Eto’o achieved the rare feat of scoring in two Champions League finals, having also found the net in the 2-1 win over Arsenal in 2006. He scored more than 100 league goals in five seasons with the Catalan club. “I would never criticise a coach if another player is better than me,” the 28year-old Eto’o said. “But it’s what you do on the field that matters. And until there is proof to the contrary, I deserved to play every Sunday.” Eto’o now hopes to impress Inter coach Jose Mourinho. “The coach wanted me for several years,” Eto’o said. “I spoke to him two or three times on the phone and it was easy to make my decision after that.” Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas is a major doubt for Arsenal's Champions League clash with Celtic after the midfielder was forced out of the 4-1 win over Portsmouth with a hamstring injury.

Manchester United forward Michael Owen after scoring.
ichael Owen admitted it was a relief to fire home his first Manchester United goal in the Premier League as the defending champions handed Wigan a 5-0 mauling on Saturday. The 29-year-old England striker came off the bench on 71 minutes and, after being put through by Nani, produced a vintage finish five minutes from time.
“I probably scored the hardest chance I’ve had,” said Owen, who had failed to find the net in United’s two opening league games against Birmingham and Burnley. “I had two chances at Burnley and one against Birmingham, but this was the fourth real opportunity I’ve had. “I don’t think I missed a chance in pre-season, but I’ve missed a couple since the sea-
son started and as ever everyone is quick to write you off. It was as if I hadn’t scored for a couple of years. Owen added on www.manutd.com: “That’s something I’ve had to deal with for ten odd years now and I don’t think that will change until I hang up my boots. “It was certainly a great feeling to score. “I’d got a few in pre-season but there’s nothing quite like
doing it in a competitive game.” Owen, who arrived at Old Trafford from relegated Newcastle in the summer, said he believes more goals will come. “I’d be disappointed if people didn’t think I could go on from here,” said Owen. “I obviously believe I can as I have done throughout my career and I certainly expect to score more goals in the red shirt.”

Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello drives on the Valencia Street Circuit
Brazilian veteran Rubens Barrichello claimed his 10th Formula One victory yesterday when he drove his Brawn GP car through a perfectly-judged race in searing heat to win the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain. It was his first win this season and his first triumph in five years since the 2004 Chinese Grand Prix at Shangai for Ferrari. Barrichello’s win lifted him from fourth to second in the drivers’ championship standings. Briton Jenson Button, his Brawn team-mate, now leads with 72 points ahead of the Brazilian on 54 with Australian Mark Webber third on 51.5. The 37-year-old driver from Sao Paulo delivered one of his finest races of modern times as he came home ahead of defending drivers champion Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren and Finn Kimi Raikkonen for Ferrari under a high sun and blue skies over the Mediterranean street circuit in eastern Spain. Hamilton had started from pole but his hopes of victory were dashed by a muddled second pit-stop when the McLaren team had not prepared his tyres. Another Finn, Hamilton’s McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, came home fourth ahead of German Nico Rosberg of Williams and local hero twotimes world champion Fernando Alonso of Renault, who was sixth. Button came home seventh to improve his place in the title race with Pole Robert Kubica finishing eighth for BMW Sauber.

‘I want to prove critics wrong’
Solheim Cup fight delicately poised
Michael Owen insists his first goal for Manchester United will be a springboard to prove the critics wrong. The 29-year-old’s goal was his first since January but he believes it offered a compelling response to the pundits who claimed he had little to offer Alex Ferguson’s team after missing several chances in pre-season. >PAGE 27
Defending champions America and Europe are neck and neck heading into the final day of the Solheim Cup . Europe edged the United States with 4-1/2 points to 3-1/2 points on Saturday to level the contest at eight points apiece. The Americans have traditionally dominated singles and have never lost on home soil, but Europe had a very good Saturday. >PAGE 25
