GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!
A recipe for staying carefree By Rungtiwa Yongprapat Film producer
“I
’m good, no matter what.” The words shocked me. They were uttered by a new friend of mine recently. I was amazed someone could say this kind of thing out loud. If it wasn’t meant as a joke, he must be a very self-confident person. Of course, he is, but later he explained what’s behind his attitude: In life, unexpected events and people are always popping up to demand our attention. Sometimes, it’s easier just to say: “I’m sorry, it’s your problem. It isn’t my problem ’cause I know I’m good, no matter what.”

Walking tall with Vojta Breakthrough treatment arrives in Thailand to give hope to disabled kids By Pongphon Sarnsamak D A I LY X P R E S S

irindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Centre (SNMRC) yesterday teamed up with the University of Heidelberg’s Orthopaedic Hospital to give children born disabled a better chance of walking and growing up to lead active lives. Over the past 15 years, Thai hospitals have treated 114,381 cases of children with disabilities, many of them with multiple physical impairments.
200 medics to be trained SNMRC director Dr Daranee Suvapan said that under the
collaboration, about 200 healthcare practitioners will be sent on a three-day seminar given by German experts to learn a new multidisciplinary approach to treatment for mobility-impaired children. The new treatment is dubbed Vojta Therapy after its originator Dr Vaclav Vojta, a Czech neurologist concerned with problems of motor rehabilitation. Initially used to treat children with cerebral palsy, Vojta Therapy is well regarded across Europe and Japan. Rather than training the body directly, Vojta Therapy stimulates the brain to create coordi-

Daranee said the therapy would provide an alternative treatment for complex problems that are better tackled with a multidisciplinary approach. Cases of stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and amputation would also benefit from the longterm follow-up care offered by
Vojta Therapy, she added. Thailand currently has 300 medics specialising in physical rehabilitation, but many of them lack the skills to diagnose disease, evaluate function, set goals and monitor a child’s development. “We need to develop our medical worker’s skills to a level where they can diagnose disease and provide appropriate care to patients,” said Daranee.

R&B singer Chris Brown was sentenced to five years of probation and 180 days of community labour for assaulting his former girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, in February. The 20-year-old singer, who appeared before a court judge with his mother, best friend and bodyguards, was also ordered to stay at least 90 metres away from Rihanna until August 2014, a distance that can be reduced to nine metres during industry events. Brown will be able to serve his sentence in his home state of Virginia, but will be required to return to Los Angeles every three months to update Judge Patricia Schnegg on his progress. “I wanted to see actual physical labour as opposed to community service,” Schnegg said.
Picking up the trash, cleaning cars Brown will perform labour such as “trash pickup, car cleaning and maintaining grounds”, she said, and will participate in counselling at a Catholic charity. He is also ordered to complete a one-year domestic violence programme. Schnegg said she was aware of broadcast “chatter” that mentioned possible meetings between the two performers, and warned Brown that such encounters would be unacceptable. “This is a felony conviction with the potential for state prison if probation is violated in any way,” the judge said. District attorney spokesman Sandi Gibbons said the DA’s office felt the sentence for Brown “is an equitable one. It’s in his hands”. Brown said he understood the sentence. Upon leaving the courtroom, he and his lawyer declined to speak with reporters. According to a court report, Brown was also involved in two other violent assaults against Rihanna prior to the attack in February, hours before the Grammy awards. AFP

Dinosaur hatchery?

Though still in its infancy, the research could eventually lead to hatching live prehistoric animals, but Larsson said there are no plans for that now, for ethical and practical reasons – a dinosaur hatchery is “too large an enterprise”. “It’s a demonstration of evolution,” said Larsson, who has studied bird evolution for the last 10 years. “If I can demonstrate clearly that the potential for dinosaur anatomical development exists in birds, then it again proves that birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs.” The research is funded by the Natural Sciences and
fter years spent hunting for the buried remains of prehistoric animals, a Canadian palaeontologist now plans to manipulate chicken embryos to show he can create a dinosaur. Hans Larsson, the Canada Research Chair in Macro Evolution at Montreal’s McGill University, said he aims to develop dinosaur traits that disappeared millions of years ago in birds.
Flipping genetic levers Larsson believes by flipping certain genetic levers during a chicken embryo’s development, he can reproduce the dinosaur anatomy.

He also recently uncovered the remains of a new carnivorous dinosaur in Argentina.
Hong Kong women have been urged not to use a face cream after it was found to contain more than 43,000 times the acceptable level of mercury. The Department of Health issued the warning after a 58-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with mercury poisoning after using the cream. The woman fell sick with headaches, dizziness, tremors and a tingling sensation on her feet after using the cream twice a day for a month. Officials are now investigating the source of the cream, which has only a Chinese name. Mercury has long been used as a whitening agent in cosmetic creams, especially so in Asia where pale skin is seen as a sign of beauty and nobility. – DPA
Bidder can’t pay for crypt The chance to spend eternity on top of Marilyn Monroe is again available after a Japanese person withdrew a US$4.6-million (Bt156-million) bid on eBay for the burial space above the film legend. “The person who was supposed to buy it turned out to be someone who couldn’t buy it,” said Steve Miller, a mortgage broker and banker who represents Elsie Poncher, the seller of the crypt space. Jackson pleaded for his ‘milk’ to quell agony of insomnia King of Pop’s final days saw him begging his doctor for drugs, including propofol A F P , Los Angeles
A
t his apex, Michael Jackson moonwalked his way into a billion hearts as music royalty, but his final days saw him plunge into desperate addiction, begging his doctor for drugs, including propofol – the “milk” that ultimately killed him. Severe insomnia tormented the King of Pop just weeks away from launching a series of 50 concerts in London to seal a comeback, revive his tarnished reputation and help lift him out of financial trouble. While trying to put the agonising condition to rest, the star found himself sucked into a vortex of prescription drug addiction facilitated by practitioners who provided him with a medicine cabinet full of Valium, the sedatives lorazepam and midazolam, and the dangerous anaesthetic propofol, among others.
Jackson’s personal doctor Conrad Murray, now in the crosshairs of an investigation into the star’s death, “stated that Jackson was very familiar with the drug [propofol] and referred to it as his ‘milk’ ”, Los Angeles Police Department detective Orlando Martinez wrote in a warrant affidavit.
Craving to sleep The chronology of Jackson’s final hours reveals a 50-year-old whose musical talent, long the envy of millions, took a back seat to his final extravagant craving: to fall asleep in his home aided by a drug cocktail so potent that experts describe it as a potential killer. “There are no treatments for insomnia on Earth that include propofol,” said Drew Pinsky, an internist and addiction specialist. “His problem wasn’t the insomnia, it was his drug addiction.” According to the affidavit, Murray admitted to police that in an effort to help rid Jackson of his insomnia, he administered the pop icon intravenous injections of 50 milligrams of propofol nightly during the six weeks prior to his June 25 death.
Houston schools ban ‘sexting’ In Houston, Texas, thousands of students are returning to school to discover a new rule: no “sexting” – the distribution of nude or semi-nude photographs or videos by text message. In Houston, one of the biggest school districts in the United States, education authorities decided to adopt the new rule before some 200,000 students returned to classes after their summer vacation. “Some principals raised the issue, so we included a provision saying sending, receiving, possessing sexually suggestive messages is forbidden,” said Hans Graff, assistant general counsel at the Houston Independent School district. A recent study found 22 per cent of US teenage girls and 18 per cent of teenage boys have sent messages or posted images or video online showing them nude or semi-nude. – A F P

f a movie’s outrageous leaps from reality have ever made your jaw drop, Sonthaya Suchada has a funny story to share. Since winning the Sodsai Award as a senior at Thammasat University in 1994, Sonthaya has consistently presented thoughtprovoking and entertaining shows, “The Insane and Sudsakorn” among them. In 1997 the playwright and director adapted Win Leowarin’s short story “48-Hour Literature” for the first Bangkok Fringe Festival. The satire on contemporary Thai fiction had a retired author taken hostage at a writer’s association party. The other scribes have to save him by completing a melodramapacked novel within 48 hours. “In the end we realise that what happens in life can sometimes be as melodramatic as popular novels,” says Sonthaya. Last year he recruited four directors at a Makhampom workshop to re-stage the play, this time satirising the creation of contemporary Thai theatre. That hilarious version, “24Hour Theatre”, closed the 2008 Bangkok Theatre Festival.
Put on the mask And now, since most people know more about movies than theatre, Sonthaya has come up with “Insee Dang Plang Rit”. Call it “24-Hour Cinema”. “In this version, a former indie film director is taken hostage by a thug wearing an Insee Dang mask,” he says, referring to screen actor Mitr Chaibancha’s best-known role. “The hostage taker wants

Now he’s hard at work on a Thai production with a role in “Sam-Pan-Boke”, also known as “The Sanctuary”, which is scheduled for release in Thai cinemas on October 7. Directed by Thanapon Maliwan (“Brave”), the Chinese-American actor plays a former military reconnaissance expert turned businessman and antiques collector. “Russell’s character is well suited for the script. And once we started worked together, I was very impressed by his ded-

In “The Sanctuary”, an American gangster hires Wong to locate the treasure that an ancestor has stolen from the palace and hidden before being killed, along with his fellow thieves, by a royal guard. But the guard’s offspring, played by “Brave” star Pairote “Mike B” Boongerd, knows the story and is determined to prevent the treasure from being retrieved. He gets help from a young and beautiful archaeology student (Intira Jaroenpura). Pathawarin Timkul also stars. Thanapon is a son of Chokchai, an action-film director and producer from the 1980s, whose movies were released upcountry rather than on the main circuit. This teen’s no square Matt McGovern is the hottest square-dance caller in the US Northeast. He livens things up By Elizabeth Sile THE WASHINGTON POST
rom far away, Matt McGovern, a 16-year-old from Ludlow in the Atlantic US state of Massachusetts, looks and sounds twice his age. He wears a crisp, navy polo and flashy gold necklaces that clink when he moves around the stage. With microphone in hand, his voice is a commanding presence in the dance hall. He calls moves rapid-fire and sings along to the songs. McGovern has become a soughtafter square-dance caller in the region, an odd thing when so few people his age square dance. He primarily calls and dances with people who are much older. The teen has been perfecting his calling style and square dancing since age 11. Confidence came with time, he says. Square-dance caller Gene King, who helped teach McGovern, calls him “a phenomenon”.
Matthew McGovern, 15, makes his calls during a square dance at the Edmond Town Hall in Newton, Conn.
“He has a great voice, really knows his choreography and knows how to move dancers really well. He’s got it all.” McGovern got his start accompanying his grandmother to dances. Other dancers, callers and his family encouraged him to try calling because he could sing and dance so well. He started taking lessons when he was 12, then did guest “tips”, or square-dance sessions, with other callers, until he broke away on his own. Even though he doesn’t have his driver’s licence yet, he still manages to travel as far as Maine, Vermont and upstate New York with the help of his parents and grandmother. And since he started, he’s called for more than 30 squares – groups of eight dancers – at the New England Square Dance Convention. In the 1970s and ’80s there were more square-dancing clubs and more younger people were interested, McGovern says. But many square-dancing organisations still exist, as well as hundreds of clubs such as the Hayloft Steppers, to which McGovern belongs, and festivals held nationwide. He views calling not only as a hobby but an unconventional parttime job. He can pocket a decent wage if the event is large. McGovern’s grandmother, June McCarthy, says that even though he has had much less experience,

he manages to stack up to the veteran callers. “I think he’s a little more upbeat,” she says. “He does a lot of the more modern music.” McGovern acknowledges that he puts a lot of energy into the routine. He bounds from one song to the other without seeming the least bit tired. “Some callers don’t really get into it,” he chuckles.

he joy of childbirth often yields to the agony of postpartum pain in the neck, shoulders and back. One source of relief is the traditional yu fai, which involves massage and steaming herbs, but there are modern choices as well. Dr Montanat Rojjanasrirat of the Chirofit Chiropractice Fitness Centre notes that a body can gain up to 30 kilograms during pregnancy, with much of the weight out front, shifting the skeletal and muscular structure. All of that has to be compensated for after birth to bring the body back into balance. Nine months of having
a bent back, weakened hips and stressed muscles demand careful restabilising, he says. Then there are the hunched back and problems with the shoulder muscles that can result from poor posture while breastfeeding. When the spine is no longer properly aligned, the nerves are affected, leading to pain, spasms, spinal-cord stress and disc degeneration. Chiropractors restore normal body mechanics by remodelling the spine, Montanat explains. They get you back into the correct posture through manipulation and exercise and sometimes use acupuncture and massage.
At the Ariya Wellness Centre, therapists capture electronic images of the body structure to evaluate your postpartum condition, then assign a detoxification programme that can range from the hi-tech “Far Infrared System” to very low-tech sweating. The muscles are thus relaxed and blood circulation improved to encourage new cell formation and get the internal organs functioning properly. Throughout the process, tapes of Buddhist chanting are played to help soothe the mind. But ultimately, says Ariya therapist Penpitchayakorn Sandkhum, the easiest and most basic thing a mother should do is make sure she sits, stands, walks and sleeps in a healthy posture.

t’s no secret that childhood obesity is a widespread problem, both in the US and increasingly in Thailand. But keeping your children active and getting them off the couch every day can go far in keeping them healthy. How do you do it? Here are some suggestions from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention: ■ Set a positive example by lead-
ing an active lifestyle yourself.
■ Make physical activity part of your family’s daily routine. Go for walks or play games together.
■ Give your children equipment that encourages activity, such as balls or bikes. ■ Make physical activity fun. If your children don’t enjoy something, don’t force it. Encourage them to try something else. ■ Encourage your children to do something other than watching TV or playing on the computer after dinner.

Today’s Birthday: Making plans and not following through will lead to emotional upset and unexpected changes in your personal life. This is a good year to take a look at who you are and consider what’s required to update your appeal. Don’t back down when you have so much to gain.
Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
ARIES ***** March 21-April 19 Get a better handle on your finances and then budget to suit your current needs. Once you feel better about your spending habits, you will be able to move on to a new project with confidence. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 There may be a conflict between the changes you want to make at home and those willing to go along with your plans. Don’t back down but do compromise. GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 Take the time to listen to someone who interests you and you can form a coalition that will benefit you both. A change in plans will help you manipulate your professional situation.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★
CANCER *** June 21-July 22 You’ll get all worked up over nothing. Not everyone will agree with you, but does it really matter? Organisation and good preparation will help you prove your point without rancour. LEO ***** July 23-Aug. 22 You can win at whatever you do if you go about it the right way. Concentrate on making everyone comfortable with your plans and you will get help from someone who really matters to you.
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY
VIRGO ** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Be careful with whom you share information. Someone may not be as honest as you hope. You can excel but only if you are willing to do the work yourself. Uncertainty will be your downfall. LIBRA **** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 You can talk your way into any deal or activity or group that you wish to be a part of but be sure that you really want to be involved. Chances are good that your motives may not be in the right place. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 A work problem may leave you feeling emotionally down. Don’t let this stand in the way of moving forward with one of your own plans. You don’t have to spend to get something off the ground. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You can skilfully market your talent and grab interest but if you cannot follow through, you will face the wrath of someone with more experience. Massa to go to the US for tests Brazilian F1 racer Felipe Massa is to travel to the US tomorrow for more tests during his recovery from head injuries sustained in a Hungarian qualifying crash a month ago, Formula 1 officials said. Massa will be examined by the chief doctor of the US-based CART series, Steve Olvey, they said on the official F1 website. aomichi “Joe” Ozaki, holder of 35 professional career titles, has been officially re-appointed as Asian Team captain to continue his successful leadership during the fourth edition of the Royal Trophy. The Royal Trophy is an emotionally-charged inter-continental clash, where Asian and European golfers compete furiously over a three-day series of matches for stewardship of the solid-silver sixteen-kilogram Trophy, graciously donated by His Majesty the King. Ozaki was first appointed captain of team Asia in 2007 for the second edition of the Championship, but suffered a punishing defeat that year. However, he led the team to a historic and resounding victory in 2009, shocking the Europeans with a tremendous performance. “We are determined to keep the Royal Trophy in Asia. It started on a high with our Asian Team’s magnificent win over Europe and now YE Yang scored a terrific win at the

YE Yang was a member of my Asian Team for the Royal Trophy in 2007 and it is great to see him achieve such great success,” stated Ozaki. Vijay Singh has changed putters and caddies throughout his career. Now comes one of the more significant changes. The 46year-old Fijian is leaving his management company. Singh says he has ended his management agreement with IMG. He will use longtime adviser David Lightner of FSM Capital and Charley Moore, a former IMG agent who now is an operating partner of New York-based Falconhead Capital. Singh had been with IMG for 18 years and was close friends with IMG owner Ted Forstman, his frequent partner in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. “I have been represented by IMG for quite some time and am thankful for their years of service,” Singh said in a statement. “I have many good friends there, and nothing is changing at that level. However, I feel this is the appropriate time to take my career management in a new direction. “I spoke with Teddy last week, who is a personal friend, and we had a productive conversation. He knows I wish him and everybody at IMG the best.”

first-half hat-trick from new Argentinian signing Lisandro crushed Anderlecht’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League group stages as Lyon showed their last 32 credentials in a 3-1 win in Belgium. Thanks to their 5-1 victory over the Belgian side at the Gerland stadium last week, giving them an 8-2 aggregate result, Lyon were the most convincing team of the five who qualified for the group stage on Tuesday. Elsewhere Maccabi Haifa joined the lucrative stages of Europe’s premier club competition with a 3-0 win over FC Salzburg which gave the Israelis a 5-1 victory over the Austrians. Debrecen secured their ticket in similar fashion, becoming the first Hungarian side to qualify for the group stages since Ferencvaros in 1995 by beating Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia 2-0 at home on the night for an aggregate of 4-1. Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said: “That was an achievement. It was difficult up against a pretty strong Anderlecht side.”

Real Madrid fans back Dutch midfielder Sneijder as management rips off his shirt The fans of Real Madrid are supportive of the decision of Wesley Sneijder to stay at the club, according to a poll taken by sports daily AS. Eighty-four per cent of the 47,163 readers who participated in the poll voted in favour of the Dutch midfielder staying at the Estadio Bernabeu. Real director general Jorge Valdano has been trying to offload Sneijder all summer, in order to make way for the
club’s new signings. On Tuesday Sneijder seemed poised to sign for Inter Milan, but apparently backed out of the move at the last moment. According to Spanish media reports, Atletico Madrid – who on Tuesday booked their place in the group phase of the Champions League – are also interested in the Dutchman. Sneijder, 25, was bought
Wesley Sneijder’s number has been taken away by Real from Ajax in 2007 for around US$38.62 million.
He was an immediate success in the famous white shirt, helping the club to win La Liga in his first year, but struggled with injuries and poor form last season. Earlier, Sneijder refused to travel to Italy, where he had been expected to sign a new contract with Serie A champions Inter Milan. According to the online editions of Spain’s major newspapers, the midfielder
has refused to budge although the Spanish giants have taken away his number 10 shirt and locker in the team’s locker-room. “After the deal had been completed between the teams, the footballer was expected in Milan this afternoon to sign the terms of his new contract. But the playmaker has already told [Real Madrid] that he is not going to catch a plane.

ational coach Peter Reid’s exit plans reached a conclusion with the Englishman due to make an appearance in Stoke City’s dugout during the Premiership club’s League Cup second-round tie later yesterday. Worawi Makudi, the Football Association of Thailand president, reportedly travelled to England to plead with the veteran coach to return, but found Reid adamant in his decision to take up the role of assistant manager at Stoke. Bowing out as Thailand coach less than a year into his three-year contract, Reid was planning to introduce himself to fans at his new club as they entertained League One side Leyton Orient yesterday. The 53-year-old coach, whose last managerial job in England was at Coventry City four years ago, confirmed that he was happy to be moving into a back-seat role at the Potters. “I did the same thing at Manchester City and England Under-21s, so it’s not a problem. The role is fine for me as long as I can have an impact here and help this club grow stronger. “The club has done fantastic to get to the Premier League and my job is to help the players and Tony [Pulis, Stoke City manager] to improve,” Reid told BBC Radio Stoke. Reid stated that the opportu-

The players are technically good and it’s a great place to live,” said Reid. “But the Premier League is the greatest league in the world, and although it was very difficult to leave, it was always my ambition to come back here and work.” Meanwhile, Ong-art Korsinkha, the FAT secretarygeneral, dismissed a report that Reid decided to leave because the organisation had failed to pay his salary for the past few months.

Lippi to quit coaching Italy’s national team coach Marcello Lippi has said he won’t continue coaching after he ends his stint at the helm of the world champions. Speaking on the Internet TV show KlausCondicio, Lippi said that “after the experience with the Nazionale you won’t see me coach a club”. He added: “Never again, also because I wouldn’t be able, right after a game that possibly didn’t go well, to stand for an hour and a half answering questions from journalists. I could not do it. It would be too much for me.” Lippi, 61, has been back in the Azzurri’s dugout for a second term since the summer.
ngland defender Joleon Lescott completed his move from Everton to Manchester City, the latest arrival in City’s big-spending bid to end decades without a major title. Signing a five-year contract, the 27-year-old centreback is the latest big star to move to the vastly wealthy but underachieving club which has also bought Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor and Sylvinho during the transfer window, spending around £120 million. “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Joleon to Manchester City,” said City manager Mark Hughes. “He is an England international who has proved his Premier League ability during his time at Everton.” City last won the league in 1968 and the FA Cup in ’69 but the backing of a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family has given them a big advantage over their rivals. “The way this club is moving on, I’m really looking forward to being a part of that,” Lescott said after signing a deal which was opposed for weeks by Everton. He was expected to take his place alongside former Arsenal star Toure at the heart of the City defence. “In bringing Joleon to the club I feel we have recruited a defender of the very highest quality,” Hughes said. “He can play in a number of defensive positions, and I’m positive he will make a significant impact for us.”

THESPORT British police were yesterday hunting
those responsible for “large-scale” violence at a match between London rivals West Ham and Millwall, which revived memories of the hooliganism of past decades. A 44-year-old man was in a stable condition after being stabbed in the chest and two other men were treated for non life-threatening injuries after fighting flared before Tuesday’s League Cup match at West Ham’s Upton Park ground. Inside the stadium, fans invaded the pitch and interrupted the match while police and stewards attempted to remove them. More than 200 riot police and 20 police on horseback battled to contain the violence inside and outside the stadium. John Whittingham, who lives nearby, said supporters were bombarding each other and police with anything they could find. “People were throwing bricks but I haven’t got a clue where they were finding them. Some people were trying to rip bollards off the pavement. There were also some small fires lit,” he said. A 19-year-old man said: “People were chipping bricks off buildings and throwing them at police. I saw one officer getting kicked as he was on the ground.” Television pictures showed fans bleeding from head wounds. London’s Metropolitan Police, which made at least 10 arrests, said the violence was “large-scale” and appeared to have been pre-meditated. “It looks like there has been some planned trouble from fans,” a Metropolitan Police spokesman said. “We will be reviewing all the events, looking at CCTV both inside and outside the ground to identify offences and offenders.” A Football Association spokeswoman condemned the incidents as a throwback to the bad old days of English football in the 1970s and 1980s, when matches were frequently scarred by fighting between rival fans.
