However, the Dental Council has called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the sale of dental supplies to anyone but dentists from next week. The FDA said yesterday that it would ask the Medical Supply Committee to list fashionable tooth braces as a medical item so that they become controlled products. The move follows headlines about a Khon Kaen student who died from a mouth infection after undergoing an orthodontic operation performed by an amateur to fit the fashionable braces. The president of the council’s sub-panel for dental consumer protection, Thongchai Wachirarojpaisal, said a “Google” search found 57,000 websites offering trendy orthodontic services, selling dental supplies and offering orthodontic courses.

hanks to Her Majesty the Queen, the Fine Arts Department has established an institute devoted to khon.
HM’s immense interest Her Majesty has always expressed immense interest in the art, over the years commissioning new costumes and props for khon performances. She is also keen that all aspects of the dance – including mask-making techniques – be
passed on to the younger generation. “In response to Her Majesty’s intention to conserve this art, we have set up the Institute of Khon,” Fine Arts Department director-general Kriangkrai Sampatchalit said at a press conference yesterday.

“We will develop a modern archive on khon. We will also put on show khon costumes and props,” he said. He added that the institute will work with other educational institutes in not only promoting performances but also producing khon artists. The institute is now up and running, with a launch budget of Bt804,800. “We will officially inaugurate the Institute of Khon in December,” Kriangkrai said, adding that 50,000 visitors were expected each year.
The Fine Arts Department is planning to set up a board for the institute, with members comprising khon experts and other specialists.
Road shows Office of Performing Arts director Karun Suttipoon says the Fine Arts Department will organise a tour to promote the Institute of Khon. “The first show will be staged on September 1 in the central region,” he says. The tour will then head to Suphan Buri, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Sukhothai and Nakhon Ratchasima, where it is scheduled to end on September 28.

Malaysia bars Muslims from Black Eyed Peas concert Malaysia’s government has barred Muslims from a concert by US hiphop stars the Black Eyed Peas next month because the event is organised by Irish beer giant Guinness. The prohibition comes amid a clampdown on alcohol consumption among Malaysia’s Muslim majority. A Muslim woman who drank beer in public was sentenced to caning by an Islamic court last month, though authorities this week agreed to review the penalty. Officials also recently curbed retail sales of liquor in a central state. The Black Eyed Peas will perform at a theme park near Kuala Lumpur on September 25 as part of worldwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of Guinness’ flagship brewery in Dublin. The Malaysian show’s official website said “the party is only open to non-Muslims aged 18 years and above”. – A P

H
alf a dozen new cases of “exploding iPhones” emerged in France on Wednesday, as Apple faced an official inquiry and calls to come clean over possible risks linked to its wildly popular smartphone.
Ten French consumers have now come forward saying their iPhone screens exploded or cracked without explanation, according to an Agence FrancePresse tally, including a first case in mid-August in which a teenager suffered an eye injury.
Batteries overheat Cracked screen An 80-year-old pensioner from the Paris suburbs said on Wednesday his iPhone screen cracked up in his hands, a day after a supermarket watchman claimed he was hurt in the eye when his screen suddenly shattered this week.
Apple is accused of trying to hush up 15 cases of iPod music players heating up and bursting into flames in the United States and in one similar British case, all apparently due to overheated lithium ion batteries. None of the incidents has
caused a serious injury, but Apple was forced to defend the safety of its flagship smartphone before the European Union this month, insisting the exploding screen cases were “isolated incidents”. The US technology giant, which has sold 26 million iPhones and 200 million iPods to date, said it had been informed of the French cases, but would not comment until it had examined the damaged phones.
French probe But France’s official competition, consumer affairs and fraud watchdog, the DGCCRF, has launched an investigation to find out whether the Apple smartphone could pose a threat to consumers.

Info highway London police ‘steal’ from unlocked cars British police are combing the upscale London neighbourhood of Richmond, looking for things to steal. Scotland Yard said that officers in the southwest London borough would be checking unlocked cars for precious items – and sometimes taking them – as a reminder to owners to keep their doors locked, their windows closed and their valuables with them. “The message to car owners is: ‘Help us to help you’,” Richmond Police Chief Inspector Duncan Slade said in a statement. The force said officers would either write to owners of the unsecured vehicles telling them to be more careful or – if they spotted high-value items in the car – “remove the property for safekeeping”.
Nude model arrested It seems the only nudes allowed at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are the ones in the collection. Police say they arrested a 26-year-old woman who was posing naked for a photographer, and in full view of visitors, in the museum’s arms and armour department on Wednesday. Model Kathleen “KC” Neill faces a charge of public lewdness. Defence attorney Donald Schechter says the museum is full of nude art, and to call what the model and her photographer were doing obscenity “is ridiculous”. Photographer Zach Hyman directed the shoot. He’s been getting some attention locally for photographing nude models on subways. – AP

ITALIAN PM’S WIFE: LIES LED TO DIVORCE Veronica Lario wanted to seek a last way out to ‘respect myself’ at the outset of a sex scandal A P , Rome
he estranged wife of Premier Silvio Berlusconi says in a book published on Wednesday that it was her husband’s alleged lies that pushed her to file for divorce at the outset of the sex scandal involving the Italian conservative leader. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi and his wife Veronica Lario in 2004. reported in the media and sparked a series of allegations over Berlusconi’s purported fondness for young women. Berlusconi has denied having any improper relationship with Letizia or any other women. “Tendenza Veronica”, (“Veronica’s Trend”), is a re-
vised edition of a book first published in 2004 by journalist Maria Latella. In the new edition, she quotes Lario as saying that the Naples incident was only the latest problem in her relationship with her husband. “It was the latest lie. Better
then to try to seek a last way out to respect myself, better to divorce,” said Lario, 53. “He put me in this situation.” Lario, a former actress with whom Berlusconi has three children, said her husband’s actions were embarrassing him at a global level. “I cannot be his baby sitter and I cannot stop him any more from making himself ridiculous in front of the world,” she said. “I’m done.” Lario set off a political storm when she announced her decision to divorce. Since then, the media have competed for every tawdry detail of new allegations linking the 72-yearold premier to models and even a prostitute. Berlusconi has denied ever paying a woman for sex, and has dismissed all the allegations as lies fabricated by the opposition and left-leaning media.

She was also found to be suffering from anaemia and malnutrition. Lee admitted causing bodily harm and unnecessary injury to his daughter and was jailed for two years and three months. hey call themselves glam rockers and profess love for Andy Warhol, Charles Darwin, Jimmy Page and, yes, David Bowie. You don’t get much sassy rock these days, but London’s Raygun might fill the gap.
The quartet’s first single “Just Because” from their self-titled debut is the touchstone for an extensive tour that brought the band to Malaysia for the “MTV World Stage” concert earlier this month. We had a chat on the shore of Kuala Lumpur’s Sunway Lagoon.

What on earth’s going on here? Ray Gun: Actually we were going to form a heavy-metal band, but I prefer soul and the Beatles. Me and The Adj met at music school and started writing songs together. We met a lot of bass and drum players but nobody wanted to stay. Then we met Ben and Sam. The Adj: We were lucky, actually, because they were already half a band as well and have similar aspirations.
Ray Gun: We’re all very diverse in terms of music.
Glam rock? Ray Gun: I think it’s glam, because we draw a lot of elements from David Bowie, T-Rex and other ’70s stuff, which I like because it’s very visual. It’s like fantasy music, with lots of art and colour. It sparkles. Bands like Oasis are great, but visually they’re not imaginative.
Can we expect remix versions later on? The Adj: We’ve got Calvin
Harris working on some tracks already.
What’s “Just Because” about? Ray Gun: It’s about indulgence – when you do too much and
you drink too much.
Among the new crop of bands, how different are you? Ray Gun: We’re more flamboyant than the rock bands coming out. And I love to dance. Ben: We want to entertain, not like a lot of bands that are so self-important about what they’re doing. We enjoy what we do and therefore the people enjoy it too.
How about that sci-fi name? Ray Gun: There’s a David Bowie song called “Moonage Daydream” where he sings “put your ray gun to my head”. I thought it was kind of cool to stun people with a ray gun.

How, we asked him, can he possible be prearing for that? “I’m working on my new album,” he says, trying to sound nonchalant. “It’s coming out on Deep Medi Musik early next year, and my Back to Chill party
has its third anniversary next month and I’m starting Back to Chill Osaka at the same time.
What did you grow up on? I was listening to Kraftwerk when I was 11. In my teens I was crazy about techno music like LFO and Nightmares on Wax and listening to early-’90s rave music, jungle, abstract, hiphop, electronica, dub and industrial. After my first and second singles, I got more into experimental music. I made effects pedals and instruments to create original sounds. I’ve written for the movies, the theatre and fashion shows.
Since your breakthrough in 1998, how have you evolved? I’ve released six albums and toured for seven years, expanding my horizons. At first my music might have been about self-satisfaction, but now I’m into the dance floor, DJing, listening and meditation.
Describe the scene in Japan now. Techno, house and electro are big. Dubstep is still small but slowly getting bigger. The good point about the Japanese underground-music scene is that different genres can cross over in a single night.

RIP Teddy US Senator Edward Kennedy, who died on Tuesday, fought for equal rights for gays on many fronts and was an early defender of people with HIV. Kennedy was one of only 14 senators who voted against the 1996 Defence of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a union only between a man and a woman. He warned that the bill would “drive a wedge between one group of citizens and the rest of the country, solely for partisan advantage”.
,, By Paisarn Likhitpreechakul SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S
T
hanks to the Thai Network of People Living with HIV/Aids, I recently attended their forum on sexual rights and found it delightful to be among 200 HIV-positive new friends, laughing and having fun talking about the kind of fun that doesn’t involve laughter.
‘Love across barriers soothes the heart and cures the soul,’ reads
the message on this T-shirt by reality show ‘Project Runway’s HIVpositive model-designer Jack Mackenroth.
Of course, there were serious moments too, as stories were shared about the all-too-common prejudice and discrimination. A woman told of being chided for effectively “passing a death sentence” on her HIVnegative husband. Sadder still, he signed the consent form for her sterilisation behind her back after she delivered his child. A sero-discordant relationship (in which one partner is an HIVer, the other not) is certainly not easy for straights, even with family support and the legal commitments that come with marriage. What about among gay men? What are the chances in the overwhelmingly superficial gay culture for a “magnetic” relationship where opposites attract? Most of us seem to assume that we will never have anything to do with HIV, as long as we stick to the tenets of safe sex. We also take it for granted that none of our friends are infected. HIV/Aids is treated as something to stay as far away as possible, physically and mentally. In many ways, the Thai gay world still seems like a closet where exclusive membership is only for the HIV-negative, looks-conscious, middle-class,
singles in their 20 and 30s. Those that don’t fit the description are shoved into small boxes inside the closet. The HIV box is the one pushed away furthest away and firmly locked. There’s a wall of silence around the issue that presents our positive brothers and sisters with only two options: talk to professionals or keep it to themselves. A positive friend unintentionally “came out” to me about his HIV status. When he told me the whole story, I felt really happy to be so trusted. At the same time, I can’t help wondering if more of my acquaintances are also living with HIV. Have I perhaps been unconsciously shutting the issue out so they haven’t feel safe to share it with me so far? It made me realise that we need a safe open space beyond the bedroom to discuss HIV issues and allow our positive friends to know that they are a vital part of our life, no matter what. Our society is a poor place, if it can’t be a “magnetic community” where love and understanding prevail over all barriers including sero status. Share ideas on gay issues at asiantrekker@yahoo.com.
WHEN HE TOLD ME THE WHOLE STORY, I FELT REALLY HAPPY TO BE SO TRUSTED. AT THE SAME TIME, I CAN’T HELP WONDERING IF MORE OF MY ACQUAINTANCES ARE ALSO LIVING WITH HIV.

A 17-year-old British sailor has become the youngest person to sail around the world without assistance. British sailor Mike Perham grabbed the solo record after completing the 45,000-kilometre trip in nine months and crossed the finish line yesterday in Cornwall, in southern England. Perham is a few months younger than Zac Sunderland, a 17-year-old from Thousand Oaks, California, who completed a similar trip in July in 13 months. – AP

t didn’t take long for YE Yang to appreciate the celebrity status that comes with being the first player to take down Tiger Woods in a major championship. During a whirlwind week after Yang rallied from two shots behind to beat Woods in the US PGA Championship, the 37year-old South Korean headed to Carlsbad, California, for a meeting with TaylorMade, one of his sponsors. He met with the marketing and production crew, and felt like a rock star during a sales meeting when employees chanted his name. Then he strolled over to a practise facility and met former president George W Bush. “He came up to me very casually, like a next-door neighbour, started talking with me,” Yang said. Turns out Bush had been to Jeju Island, Yang’s hometown in South Korea for a speech, and
they chatted for 30 minutes about Bush’s relationship with South Korea President Lee Myung-bak and the coincidence of Bush’s visit to Jeju Island coming so close to Yang becoming the first Asian-born player to win a major. “He asked me whether it was nerve-racking to play with Tiger for 18 holes, especially on the 18th hole,” Yang said. “And before I could answer, he said it must have been less nerveracking than his eight years in office.” They also arranged for a round of golf. Bush and Yang both recently moved to the Dallas area. “We sort of promised to have a round of golf sometime when our schedules were okay,” Yang said. “And I told him that I would actually be willing to skip a tournament or two if he were willing to play golf with me. So, I’m looking forward to that, as well.” Winning the US PGA Championship has been slow to sink in for Yang. Not many remember that he won the HSBC Champions in Shanghai by two shots over
Woods in 2006, perhaps because they did not go head-tohead as they did in the final round at Hazeltine two weeks ago. His only US PGA Tour victory had been the Honda Classic in March. Celebrity showed up quickly. Yang thinks he slept only 20 hours during the week after the US PGA Championship as he tried to handle media requests from all parts of the world. His press conference on Wednesday at The Barclays was broadcast via satellite because of interest from the South Korean media. More than two dozen South Korean reporters were on site, and the first 30 minutes were devoted to Korean-only questions. “It just seems that I have become more famous, and that’s about it,” Yang said. About the only person he hasn’t met since Hazeltine is the guy he beat. “I have not interacted with Tiger again,” Yang said. “The only thing that I really did was today before the pro-am, I just passed by him. We never even made eye contact. So that’s about it.”
he Football Association of Thailand secretarygeneral Ong-art Korsinkha has slammed outgoing national coach Peter Reid as a disgrace for orchestrating a move to English Premier League club Stoke City behind the association’s back. The Englishman claimed that he had already reached an agreement with the FAT to allow him to leave the job he has held for nearly a year. “Once everything was sorted out with the Thai FA, which was important because I did have three years left on a deal there and I didn’t want to upset anyone there, I was delighted to say yes and be part of it,” the ex-England player told BBC Radio Stoke. The 53-year-old coach, who signed a four-year contract with the association, also revealed the move would not have happened had he not met Stoke manager Tony Pulis by chance. “I saw him on a social occasion and he flagged it up. I was due to fly out to Dubai last Friday and I got a call in the morning [saying] could I get down here ... we had a chat and we clicked. I’ve known Tony for many years.” Reid’s words are unlikely to placate Ong-art, who criticised the ex-England playerfor engineering the move without the consent of the organisation. “It’s certainly not appropriate conduct. The story came only from his camp. He really should have talked with us before making it public,” said Ong-art. Ong-art also questioned the former Sunderland manager’s desire to take up a secondary role as assistant manager of the Potters. “I don’t know what he really thought. But if my calculations are correct, he will receive a weekly wage of about Bt3 million, which is the amount he gets from us monthly.”

Sneijder exits Madrid with head held high
DEVILS MAY CARE Wenger vows to attack United at Old Trafford AFP, London
rsenal manager Arsene Wenger plans to go on the attack as his team bid for revenge in tomorrow’s Premier League showdown at Manchester United. Wenger believes Arsenal were too timid as they slumped to a 4-1 aggregate defeat against United in the Champions League semi-finals last season. But the Gunners have made a flying start to the new campaign and travel to Old Trafford on the back of four successive wins after securing their place in the Champions League group stages with a 3-1 win over Celtic on Wednesday. That play-off second leg victory followed hot on the heels of crushing Premier League victories over Everton and Portsmouth and Wenger is convinced Arsenal are in the right frame of mind to make amends for that lacklustre European exit against United. Wenger was encouraged by the way his young team set the tempo during a goalless draw at Old Trafford in the league late last season and will send them out to do the same again on Saturday. “In the Champions League we were too passive but in the league game we went forward more. It is more mental than tactical,” Wenger said. “I’m happy to go there now because it is the first big, big test. You want always to have a high level of confidence when you go to Old Trafford. “Beating Celtic is the perfect

We are organised and structured to go forward and score. The price we pay is we concede occasionally but as long as we score we don’t worry too much. “Someone told me that our team’s average age is 23. We still have things to improve and we want to show we have made a big improvement by the end of the match against Manchester United.” After confounding the critics who wrote off Arsenal as alsorans this season, Wenger knows his team need a strong performance at United to underline their title credentials. But the French coach may have to do without captain Cesc

Fabregas as admitting the Spain midfielder, who missed the Celtic game with a hamstring injury, is not certain to recover in time for the United clash. Wenger will give Fabregas until the last minute to prove his fitness but he was at least able to rest Robin van Persie against Celtic, while Andrey Arshavin only made a late appearance as a substitute. “We have to recover quickly physically because Man United didn’t play this week,” Wenger said. “ Cesc looks to be short for Saturday. Aaron Ramsey has an injury as well, I don’t know how serious it is yet. They checked his knee.”
Dutch international midfielder Wesley Sneijder said he is leaving Real Madrid for Inter Milan with his pride intact. “I am going with my head held high,” the 25year-old, who had reportedly been refusing to budge from the Spanish giants. Asked if leaving a newly revitalised Real for the Italian side was a good move, he replied: “Yes, I am going to a great club. There is no doubt about it.” Inter Milan have agreed to sign Sneijder from Real for five years in a deal worth around ¤16 million which will see the player earn four million euros per year, some ¤500,000 more than he currently earns in Spain, Spanish and Italian media reported Wednesday. Sneijder, who joined Real from Ajax in the summer of 2007 on a five-year deal worth ¤27 million, is one of several players who the Spanish side are trying to offload to counterbalance the mega-millions purchase of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso. Real’s Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini hinted in July that Sneijder could be one of the Dutch players who would stay at the club. Sneijder told Marca that Pellegrini told him as recently as Wednesday morning that he was counting on him for the upcoming season. “What happened was really bizarre. The coach said he was counting on me but there are people at the club who did not count on me,” he said. – AFP

Arjen Robben is surplus to requirements at Madrid.
ayern Munich have been linked to Real Madrid’s Dutch winger Arjen Robben, according to reports in the German press yesterday, with the transfer window set to close here next week. The 25-year-old has been linked to a Bayern team which has so far struggled to their worst Bundesliga start in 43 years having taken just two points from their first three
games and were humbled 2-1 by minnows Mainz on Saturday. Bayern team manager Uli Hoeness has hinted there may be more transfers before the deadline on August 31 while Robben looks set to struggle for first team football in Madrid after Real signed Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. And Bayern’s director of sport Christian Nerlinger told the Munich Merkur: “We are not looking for a right-sided de-
fender or a goalkeeper and we will not rush into buying someone.” Bayern got back to winning ways after Saturday’s horror result in Mainz with a 3-1 win over Berlin’s second division side FC Union as goals by Ivica Olic, Brazilian Breno and defender Edson Braafheid all scored. Robben’s arrival would complement Bayern’s play-maker Franck Ribery and give the German giants more options in
attack, but their Dutch coach Louis van Gaal says he letting Munich’s bosses Hoeness and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge look after any transfers. “I still have no influence on who Bayern buy and I have not yet got the team to buy into my philosophy,” said the Dutchman. AS and Marca websites said that Bayern would pay around ¤25 million for winger Robben. Real paid around ¤35 million to Chelsea for Robben in 2007.

NEDVED CALLS TIME Pavel Nedved is retiring from football, ending an 18-year career at the top despite numerous offers to continue. Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith wants Uefa to punish Arsenal striker Eduardo for diving in the Champions League play-off round second leg against Celtic. Eduardo won a crucial penalty in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday after tumbling theatrically to the turf as Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc came out to make a save. Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati called for Eduardo to be banned in the immediate aftermath of the match and Smith wants Uefa to act retrospectively to punish the Croatia international in the same way they dealt with Lithuania striker Saulius Mikoliunas, who cheated to earn a spot-kick against Scotland at Hampden Park in September 2007. Video evidence was used to sanction Mikoliunas, who was banned for two matches. Smith said: “Eduardo is a terrific player who has battled back from a serious injury to resume playing at the highest level. However, he showed disrespect to the game by his actions in winning a penalty against Celtic. “We have shown the courage to use retrospective punishment when it comes to simulation and I would urge Uefa to do so in this instance. Everything that can be done to stamp it out must be done – starting right now. We can talk all we want about Fair Play campaigns, but taking action would be a much more powerful deterrent and would send the right message to players everywhere.” Even Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted it was not a penalty. “Having seen it again on television it doesn’t look to be a penalty. But I’m not sure if the keeper touched him. Eduardo might be a bit cautious because of the injury that he had. He might have jumped out of the way. I never asked in my life any player to dive to get a penalty but sometimes the player goes down because there is no way to get out of the way.”– A F P
