Holidays: time to get busy By Natida Wirushsilpa

hether they call it summer break, school break or uni break, the long holidays have just one meaning for most students: free time. Free from school, homework, projects and, of course, waking up early. For me, it’s a time to do things I don’t get the chance to do while I’m busy studying. People might say I’m a workaholic, but I believe that this is the time for every student to find new opportunities and experiences, before they settle down to the drudgery of a job.

Part of the “orderly regulations” regime being launched at Sanam Luang today, the idea will be implemented after the Bangkok landmark is cleared of some 300 homeless people, said Deputy Bangkok Governor Theerachon Manomaipibul, who inspected the area yesterday. The flower market idea is part of a two-year landscape adjustment plan to divide Sanam Luang into a ceremonial ground and an activity ground. The latter will include a plaza for cultural and sports activities as well as a Dutchstyle flower market, said Theerachon.

Cellist Tapalin Charoensook and violinists Visanee Vongvirulh, Chalat Limpisiri and Pongthep Jitduangprem have practised together for three to six hours a week for the last 12 years. That hard work has produced eight albums so far, but the group is still a non-commercial venture. The quartet was launched to the heights by the Sugree Charoensook Foundation’s Talent Education Search Project, which nurtures 20 of the country’s most musically gifted youngsters. they flew through the auditions for the International Youth Chamber Music Competition, only having to play their piece once while other groups were asked for at least three repeats.
Rising stars Before conquering the world stage, the quartet had been playing small events like weddings and exhibitions.
“After we won the competition, we were famous enough to hold a big concert in Thailand,” says Tapalin. She adds that as undergraduate students the four have to balance music practice with lectures and homework. “We’re just like any other teens.” So, what about this Friday’s performance? “The pieces evoke spring, summer, autumn and winter in turn,” says Tapalin. “Instruments imitate the sounds of birdsong and the wind, ” adds Visanee. But like their friends VieTrio at Grammy, Dr Sax enjoy bringing out the lively, fun side of classical music. “Classical is more complex than pop music,” says Visanee. “You have to find the meaning of it by yourself so you need to use more imagination.”

Andy Lau with Malaysian beauty star Carol Chu after arriving at Hong Kong’s international airport on August 25.
Lau did not identify his girlfriend, but public marriage records made available online by the Clark County Recorder’s Office in Nevada show that Lau and Carol Chu wed on June 24, 2008. The records were first reported on Saturday by Hong Kong’s Apple Daily newspaper. Speculation about Lau’s personal life has dominated the entertainment pages in Chinese-language newspapers after he was spotted in Hong Kong’s international airport last Tuesday with Chu, a former beauty pageant contestant from Malaysia. Entertainment reporters had staked out the funeral of Chu’s father in Kuala Lumpur and mobbed Lau and Chu when they returned to Hong Kong. Police searched Garrido’s home at the weekend in relation to a series of prostitute killings in the 1990s, as other bodies had been found close to where he worked. Neighbours described Garrido as a religious fanatic who grew more and more strange, and who lately was intent on spreading his confounding beliefs widely, sometimes accompanied by his two girls. News reports on Sunday said the two daughters Garrido fathered with Jaycee, who are now 11 and 15, have been told that their mother was kidnapped by their father. Her stepfather Carl Probyn told news media that the girl’s mother told him that Jaycee is “fragile” and does not think she ever tried to escape.
A worm in the apple: Macs now target of hackers It all used to be simpler for Mac users: viruses and other malicious software affected Windows computers, not them. That is slowly changing. “The threats have intensified,” says Candid Wuest from anti-virus maker Symantec. The biggest threat comes from hackers trying to sneak viruses onto computers. OSX.RSPlug.A is the name of one that preys on Mac users. It claims to be a video codec required to watch certain porno films, but in fact tries to redirect the surfer to a website forged to look like an eBay page. An attempt is then made to phish for the access data to the user’s real eBay account. Another trojan assumed control of Macs earlier this year, harnessing them into a “Botnet” – a remote controlled network of computers employed by hackers to send out spam. D PA

Then her best friend wins a trip for two to Greece and she goes along, and life is never the same again. “I’ve added another character – the best friend,” Parnrut says. “Part of the reason was that it’s tough finding a Thai actress who could handle the solo performance, but the friend is a single woman too, so you can observe the similarities and differences between the two women.” Parnrut has also shifted the setting and social context to Thailand and stitched in some of her own experiences and

Point of view “Chor Malee Ramluek” is not, she insists, a “feminist” piece. “We’re not protesting or demanding anything. rench skincare firm L’Occitane sets out to push back the years with Divine Cream, an anti-ageing ointment that’s applied in a special way to make the essential oils more effective. It mingles the essences of yellow immortelle petals from Corsica and the white buds of myrtle, hailed as “a source of vitality”. There’s a legend that gives myrtle the power to extend life by 300 years, but more realistically, its essential oil is believed to rejuvenate the skin by restoring youth to mature fibroblast cells. L’Occitane says Divine Cream – due on shelves soon for Bt5,150 – restores vitality to the skin by stimulating the production of collagen and thus making it smoother yet firmer.

Smart and sassy too At less than Bt9,000, the new Nokia E63 is a bargain for a smart phone By Smiley Byte D A I LY X P R E S S
A
down-to-earth and highly affordable hand phone, the Nokia E63 is ideal for writing e-mails and text messages. The QWERTY board is tiny but you’ll soon become sufficiently familiar with it to be able to type quickly using your thumbs. It comes with Edge and Wi-Fi data connectivity so you can check mails and browse web pages on the go. And of course it supports Nokia Messaging, the mobile phone maker’s own push mail technology.
I tested it on the True Move Edge system and had no problem checking my hotmail account and company emails. The E63 supports IMAP4, Mail for Exchange, POP3, and SMTP mail protocols. Setting up the phone to connect to your hotmail and your company account is easy thanks to the e-mail setup wizard but remember to get your firm’s email server address off the IT department first. The phone will know automatically whether your mobile phone operator supports the Nokia Messaging technology. However, you should be aware that once you set up an e-mail account or go online using the phone, it will be online all the time. Nokia staff showed me how to deactivate the online connectivity but for some reason, the phone inevitably went back online a few seconds later. This is apparently because the E63 is designed to make most of the Nokia Messaging technology that requires it to be connected all the time so that the new e-mails can be sent directly to the handset. As a result, E63 users should sign up for an unlimited GPRS package or else the online costs will be astronomical. Compared to Nokia E75, the E63 is a great deal retailing at Bt8,700 compared to the E75’s price tag of Bt15,790. But there again, the E75 has a stainless steel body while the E63’s is plastic.

The history of Sony’s Playstation 3 (PS3) is littered with bad luck, bankruptcies and a series of glitches. But there’s hope that the worst days are behind with clear sailing ahead. European gamers had to wait more than a year for the console to hit markets - until March 2007 - because problems with the blue laser diodes in the system’s Blu-ray drive forced multiple launch delays. The lull let competitors snap up Sony’s customers. But those days seem to be in the past. “The Playstation seems to have found solid footing, especially during the last Christmas season,” says Markus Schwerdtel, chief editor of GamePro, a German gaming magazine. Indeed, according to Sony Computer Entertainment's German operations, 8.5
million of the consoles have been sold in Europe so far. Additionally, 1,100 games have been produced for the PS3 - 20 per cent by Sony directly, the rest by third parties. The PS3 has let Sony focus more on its core market of young, tech-savvy men, says Schwerdtel. The heart of the PS3 is a multi-core cell processor developed jointly by IBM and Toshiba. That processor makes the PS3 faster than modern PCs in some ways. On top of that, the Blu-ray drive lets the PS3 double as a home entertainment centre. But the PS3 is about more than games and watching movies. Thanks to interfaces for digital cameras and MP3 players, the console can be used for showing pictures or playing music. The current model has an 80-gigabyte hard drive and costs about 400 euros (Bt18,000).
And while E75 has 3.2 megapixel camera, the E63 has just two megapixels. The E75, supports up to 16 gigabytes of microSD card while the E63 supports only 8GB microSD. If you don’t want to use the E75’s side-slide keyboard and larger screen, you can save a lot by going for the E63. But E63 lacks HSDPA connectivity, which the E75 supports. If you love to chat on the go, you can also download mobile live messenger to use on the E63 or visit mobile.live.com to use the Web-based instant messaging service.

errari will wait for the results of Brazilian driver Felipe Massa’s medical examination in Miami today before deciding who will partner Belgian Grand Prix winner Kimi Raikkonen at next month’s Italian Grand Prix. This became clear yesterday when team boss Stefano Domenicali outlined his and the Italian team’s considerations ahead of their home race at Monza in the wake of seeing Raikkonen win and team-mate Italian Luca Badoer finish 14th and last in Sunday’s race. Raikkonen’s victory was his first in 25 races and the team’s first this year, but his future remains uncertain amid unconfirmed claims that Ferrari have signed two-times champion Fernando Alonso from Renault as his replacement for 2010. Similar unconfirmed reports have said that the team are set to recruit Belgian race runner-up Giancarlo Fisichella of Force
FIA probe Alonso’s S’pore win Formula One’s ruling body the FIA confirmed it has launched an investigation into Fernando Alonso’s victory in last year’s Singapore Grand Prix. According to respected website autosport.com the FIA wants to examine the circumstances of various alleged events surrounding Alonso’s win, including his then-Renault team-mate Nelson Piquet’s crash, which led to a safety car intervention. Alonso’s victory came after he had enjoyed the advantage of refuelling just before Piquet’s crash, which introduced the safety car period. Piquet has denied all suggestions that he was ordered to crash and instead he has insisted that he spun off because he was pushing too hard. Ferrari and Fisichella were denying any contacts had been made late on Sunday. However, good sources in the paddock have said that Fisichella’s move to Ferrari only needs formal completion once it is known how long injured Brazilian Massa is likely to remain absent. Massa suffered head injuries when he was struck by debris and crashed during last month’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Domenicali said: “With regard to what we are going to do for the next races, we will tell you in
the next three days. We will use all our consideration following the medical check that Felipe will do and then we will put on the table all the different things that are correct and have been considered and then we will make a decision.” Massa is due to see respected American neurosurgeon Steve Olvey in Florida. According to Force India commercial director Ian Phillips, Fisichella will be contacted by Ferrari when the results of Massa’s examination are known. “We expect a move will probably be made in the next 24 hours or so,” he said.
ady Luck turned her back on Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday as the Thai rider was forced to retire by engine breakdown with only three laps to go in the MotoGP’s 250cc division. The Thai Honda PTT SAG rider, who won a point with an 11th place finish in the Czech GP after ending up with nothing in the preceding two races, was left to rue his luck once more when his bike lost power while he was fighting for fifth place. In his debut race at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Thai rider made a good start from the third row and was battling with four riders – Roberto Locatelli, Hector Barbera, Hector Faubel and Lukas Pesek – for fifth place. Unfortunately the performance of his engine dropped considerably with just three laps to go, forcing him to pit. The 21-year-old has a chance to make up ground in a week’s time at the Italian circuit of San Marino. “I made a good start and caught the second group where I was comfortable fighting for fifth. “When Jules Cluzel crashed I had to dodge pieces of his bike and also rubbed up hard against Alex Debon. “Unfortunately the run-in with Debon damaged my exhaust pipe which affected my engine’s performance badly. It was sad to end that way. “Over the weekend we improved a lot and in the race we were strong, but we lacked the luck,” said Ratthapark, who is in 14th place in the overall standings with 43 points. “I hope things go a little smoother at the next race.”

Capello keeps Owen in World Cup exile
ADE IS ADORABLE Hughes impressed by revitalised Togolese striker AFP, Portsmouth, England
anchester City manager Mark Hughes believes Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor is flourishing again because he is happy to have found a club that appreciates him. Adebayor wasn’t missed by many at Arsenal when City paid £25 million to sign him during the close-season after an acrimonious final 12 months in north London. Arsenal fans were angered by Adebayor’s constant flirtations with the likes of AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea, while several Gunners players hinted that the dressing room was a happier place without the forward. But Adebayor has made a superb start to life with City and Sunday’s bullet header at Portsmouth, which clinched a 10 win, took his tally to three goals in three games for his new team. Adebayor’s form has played an important role in fouthplaced City’s 100 per cent start to the season and Hughes said: “It’s clear to see he is happy where he is. “He’s enjoying playing with good players again and the fans love him. That maybe was missing from his life before. “I thought he was superb. There was a lot said about Ade as a player and a person, a lot of it with a negative slant. You can only judge people on how you find them and he’s come in and wants to be successful. Those negative things people said I

He could be at the start of something special and wants to play a big part in that.” After spending over £100 million to strengthen his team since the end of last season, Hughes had to deliver immediately and there can be no questioning results so far. The City boss believes the likes of Gareth Barry, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Carlos Tevez – who all followed Adebayor to Eastlands – have added a winning mentality to his squad. “Last season we were in similar situations and at times we went under on those occasions,” Hughes said. “I sense now that happens they thrive

on it rather being apprehensive about it. That is a shift in mentality. “We’ll have stronger tests.
I just sense that I have players who are confident. When you go into games against Arsenal [City’s next opponents] you have to go in with confidence.” Portsmouth manager Paul Hart, meanwhile, was encouraged by his side’s performance despite a fourth successive defeat that left them bottom of the table. “I thought we played very well, I was pleased with the way we went about our job,” he said. “I think we lacked a bit of forward movement because when we got behind them we caused them problems. “It was a great opportunity [for David Nugent] to score at the end and I’m disappointed we didn’t.”
Michael Owen’s chances of playing in the World Cup finals suffered another blow on Sunday when coach Fabio Capello snubbed the striker for next month’s qualifier with Croatia. The 29-year-old Manchester United player, who scored his first competitive goal for the English champions in last week’s Premier League defeat of Wigan, is his country’s fourthhighest goalscorer. But Capello was not convinced enough by the striker’s form to include him the squad which faces Slovenia in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday or the Group Six qualifier with Croatia on September 9 where victory would guarantee England’s place in the finals in South Africa. Capello has instead decided to keep faith with Tottenham star Jermain Defoe, who has been in fine form this season. Goalkeeper David James misses out for the third squad running after being forced to sit out Portsmouth’s home defeat to Manchester City, leaving West Ham’s Robert Green likely to continue as the first-choice stopper. Manchester United keeper Ben Foster had been earmarked by Capello as the main understudy to James, but some nervous displays may have damaged his chances. In defence, the absence of Rio Ferdinand with a thigh strain has provided Man United team-mate Wes Brown with a surprise return. Brown was sidelined for much of last term with an ankle injury. AFP

razilian magician Diego teased and toyed with AS Roma as he inspired Juventus to a crucial 3-1 victory over their Serie A rivals in the Italian capital on Sunday. The Turin giants went top of the table after the former Werder Bremen star’s brace at the Stadio Olimpico secured a second consecutive win and condemned Roma to a second defeat in two games.
Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara paid tribute to his star player. “He already showed last week the quality he has. Technically he is very good but he’s also very useful in the defensive phase,” said Ferrara. “Of course we had some difficulties during the game but overall we played as we should and deserved to win. “This win gives us confidence and confirms that we have great players here but I’m
not reading anything into the six points at this time, even if we are doing well.” After a quiet opening the game quickly became a personal battle between the central figures on each side: Juve’s attacking midfielder Diego and midfielder enforcer Daniele De Rossi of Roma. And Roma coach Luciano Spalletti admitted not all his players have the same will to win as De Rossi.
“It’s also my fault if the rest of the team does not have the same desire to fight,” said Spalletti. “De Rossi did but [Jeremy] Menez and [Francesco] Totti have different abilities. They lack a bit of fighting spirit.” Diego was at the centre of everything the visitors created. Diego scored a brilliant solo goal after Marco Cassetti inexplicably dithered on the halfway line.

Slocum shot a four-under 67 for a nine-under total of 275. Woods and Harrington also carded 67s, while Els posted a five-under 66 and Stricker shot 69. Those four shared second on eight-under 276. With the win, Slocum leapt from 124th on the FedEx Cup points list to third behind Woods and Stricker. “That’s what is unbelievable about this system,” said Slocum, who earned US$1.35 million for his third US PGA Tour win. “I was sweating it out last week not knowing if I’d even be here. Hur pumped her fist and started laughing after sinking the putt on the par-4 No 17 hole at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club north of Portland. She was then chased around the green by a friend trying to douse her with champagne. Hur shot a final-round 65, while Norway’s Pettersen and American veteran Michele Redman each finished with a 67 to finish at 13-under 203 and set up the play-off. Redman was knocked out when she missed a short putt for par on the first playoff hole, the par-4 No 18. NO SWOOP FOR ROBINHO Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s Brazilian winger Robinho is not on the European champions’ shopping list. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims Manchester
United tried to kick Arsenal out of their stride by playing “anti-football” in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over the Gunners. Wenger was infuriated by the way United set out to disrupt Arsenal’s smooth passing game by flying into tackles with aggressive intent. Although Arsenal collected six bookings and United were only shown three yellow cards, Wenger hinted that the champions’ approach was a stark contrast to his own purist principles. The French coach seemed to be particularly angered by United midfielder Darren Fletcher’s challenges, but stopped short of accusing the Scot by name. “I have seen a player who plays on the pitch only to make fouls,” he said. “For me, this is a point that is more urgent than diving. “The players who are never punished, who get out of the game without a yellow card ... I think it is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did. “Look at how many deliberate fouls some players get away with. That’s a bigger problem because it cuts the flow of the game. And people pay to see football, not free-kicks.” Asked if he was referring to Fletcher, Wenger just laughed and said: “Why do you say the name?” Fletcher insisted he had done nothing wrong and was just playing his normal game. “I enjoyed the challenge of going up against Arsenal in a big game,” he told the Sun yesterday. “I did what I normally do – made some tackles, got about the opposition, no different to any other game.”
DIRTY DEVILS!
Bowyer blameless Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric insists he does not blame Lee Bowyer for the tackle that broke his leg. Modric will be sidelined for at least six weeks as a result of the injury he sustained in a collision with Bowyer at the start of the second half in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Birmingham at White Hart Lane. Bowyer has been no stranger to controversy throughout his career but Modric does not believe the Birmingham midfielder intended to hurt him. “It was not a ferocious tackle but it hurt awfully and I knew something was wrong the moment it happened,” Modric told the Sun yesterday. “It’s like my whole world has crumbled because I’ll be out for at least six weeks. I’m terribly sad.”
