Life’s a mystery – folklore has answers By Songwat “Ozone” Assawanon Painter and art director

H

ow come folklore and superstition are still around even though the world is now run by technology? Perhaps because technology has an answer for everything, which makes life predictable – even dull. The young generation often sees the world in black and white, but I’m attracted to the colour and beauty of folk beliefs. Using only facts and logical argument can sometimes widen gaps between people, gaps that were once filled by old stories and ideas held in common. Personally, I think we need a bit of mystery – otherwise how can we see the beauty?

Burmese boy born in Thailand was unable to hold back tears yesterday when the Interior Ministry refused to support his request for a Thai passport. Mong Thongdee, 12, needs the travel document to fulfil his dream of competing in the upcoming Origami Airplane Contest in Japan. The event takes place on September 19 and 20 in Chiba. “I understand the authorities’ decision,” the boy said tearfully. “But I feel very upset.”

Passport denied Mong has been denied Thai citizenship because his parents, though working legally in Thailand, are Burmese. “As an alien, he may not be allowed back in to Thailand if he leaves the country,” Provincial Administration Department director general Wongsak Sawaspanich said yesterday. He said the Interior Ministry could not relax the laws for Mong, a Grade-4 student at the Ban Huai Sai School in Chiang Mai. DAILY

Paper plane contest Mong was invited to compete in Japan after his paper-plane design stayed airborne for more than 12 minutes to win a local contest. His school director, Duangrit Petima, then decided to help the boy by accompanying him to Bangkok to meet relevant authorities. Aside from the Provincial Administration Department, Duangrit and Mong also

called on the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Ministries want to help Ministry spokesman Wimon Kidchob said they would issue a temporary passport for Mong only if the Interior Ministry gave its approval. Only two non-Thai nationals had been granted such a document, said Wimon. Wongsak said his department had to stick to the laws; if an exception were made for Mong, it would create a loophole that others could exploit. “We must take laws and national security into account no matter how much we want to help,” Wongsak said. After hearing the discussion between Wongsak and his school director, Mong looked distraught. “I have practised so hard. It’s a huge disappointment to miss out on the trip to Japan,” he said. But he is refusing to be discouraged. “I will continue practising. I also want to send my best wishes to the Thai representative who will be competing Japan. But I hope that one day I’ll be able to travel for such contests too.”

Bangkok’s beast tackled Victory Monument is voted city’s worst eyesore by residents and visitors, facelift ordered By Jeerawan Prasomsap D A I LY X P R E S S

After Victory Monument was voted the site in Bangkok most in need of restoration, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to assign a team to solve the problem. Under the project “Transforming Public Spaces”, the British Embassy and British Council asked residents and tourists to post opinions at www.ChangeBangkok.com on which part of the capital most needed a facelift, said BMA deputy governor Thaya Theepasuwan. They were also asked to give reasons and suggestions for restoration, she added.

Ugly opinions Victory Monument got the most votes for Bangkok’s ugliest spot, with respondents citing piles of garbage, homeless people who sleep and beg in the area, run-down stalls, and pollution caused by traffic jams, said Thaya. The BMA was busy gathering the information and suggestions from the survey as part of its effort to find solutions to the eyesore, she said. A working team would soon be sent to clean up the area and tackle the problem of air pollution.

Senators clash over new regulation that permits cockfighting on Saturdays and weekdays D A I LY X P R E S S

A

Senate committee yesterday criticised a new Interior Ministry policy that permits cockfighting on more weekdays and every Saturday in addition to every Sunday, saying it encouraged animal cruelty and gambling. Truengjai Booranasomphob, head of the panel on religion, ethics, arts and culture, said the cockfighting policy would create greater public obsession with gambling. “The ministry should have sought input from animal rights activists to prevent issuing such a onesided policy to permit the blood sport,” she added.

Worry over children’s boxing Former senator Wallop Tangkhananurak, however, said gambling on blood sports was no longer a problem among teenagers, who had turned their attention to illegal betting on football, leaving cockfighting to the older generation. “Fewer and fewer people are interested in cockfighting or horseracing. I think the increase in the number of days permitted for cockfighting will not affect youth,” he added. Wallop said he was more worried about children’s boxing, which he compared to cockfighting’s status as a cultural phenomenon rather than a profitdriven practice. He said rules concerning age limits, health and welfare of child boxers would need to be altered to prevent children being exploited or endangered physically and mentally.

Possible tax windfall Senator Warin Thiamjaras was of a

‘TEENAGERS HAVE TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO ILLEGAL BETTING ON FOOTBALL,LEAVING COCKFIGHTING TO THE OLDER GENERATION.’ different opinion, saying that though the policy might increase gambling, legitimate cockfighting events would generate more revenue at both national and local levels. “Tax income could be increased by issuing a regulation that all betting be done through den operators rather than owners of the gamecocks,” he proposed. Issued on August 6 after Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul visited an event promoting cockfighting, the new policy came into effect on Monday and permits cockfighting every Saturday in addition to every Sunday, and on national holidays which have no religious or royal significance. Unlike previous rules, which allowed open-ended fights to the death, the new rules stipulate that fights must last no longer than eight 20-minute “rounds” with a 20-minute break between each. Fish fights are also allowed in cockfighting dens, which can operate a number of rings as per the approval of local authorities on a caseby-case basis.

American pop icon Madonna danced, gyrated and hopped in front of 50,000 adoring fans late on Tuesday in Tel Aviv, where she is wrapping up her Sticky and Sweet tour with two sold-out shows. “Hello Israel!” yelled the fervent follower of the Jewish mysticism discipline of Kabbalah as the crowd went wild at the Material Girl’s first concert in the country in 16 years. At one point in the show, the 51-year-old megastar wrapped herself in an Israeli flag and at another, called the country the “energy centre of the world”, sparking a deafening chorus of approving shouts and whistles. Although the music diva has not performed in Israel since 1993, she has made two private visits to the country in 2004 and 2007, visiting Jewish holy sites as part of her Kabbalah practice. In an article published in Israel’s largest circulation newspaper, the star recounted the long spiritual search that led her to the Kabbalah, the mystic Jewish religion that has become popular in recent years in part because celebrities like her have begun practising it. wo months after his death, Michael Jackson is to be buried today in a private sunset ceremony that will see the King of Pop laid to rest alongside a galaxy of Hollywood stars. The tragic pop music icon, whose mysterious June 25 death was ruled a homicide by city officials last week, will be interred in an elaborate mausoleum at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the suburb of Glendale. Only close family and

friends of Jackson will be in attendance for the event, in stark contrast to the star-studded public memorial held at Los Angeles’s Staples Centre in July attended by 20,000 mourners. Several streets surrounding the entrance to the cemetery in Glendale will be closed in an effort to keep fans at bay, police said. The cemetery’s massive Great Mausoleum is an elaborate neo-classical building inspired by Genoa’s famous Campo Santo.

Jackson’s gold-plated casket is to be placed in a private section of the mausoleum that is also home to the final resting places of famous names from Hollywood’s golden age such as Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and Carole Lombard. Forest Lawn, which opened in 1906, is also home to exact replicas of some of Michelangelo’s greatest works, including “David”, “La Pieta” and “Moses”. The cemetery also boasts a stunning recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” in stained glass. Other entertainment icons buried at Forest Lawn include Humphrey Bogart, Lon Chaney, Nat King Cole, Walt Disney, Errol Flynn and Jimmy Stewart.

A 14-year-old Japanese schoolboy is suspected of having paid for sex with a schoolgirl aged 13 after meeting her through an online dating service. The Kanagawa Police Department sent the boy’s case to prosecutors on Tuesday on charges of violating the child prostitution law, a spokesman said, adding that it may be turned over to a family court handling juvenile crimes. The junior high school boy met the girl in March after he sent a message to a dating service website, saying: “I’m a man of 18 with a lot of money”. The boy then had sex with the girl at a public bathroom near a railway station in Kagamihara, Kanagawa prefecture, west of Tokyo, and paid her 60,000 yen (Bt22,000), the spokesman said.

Google’s App Status Dashboard, a website which tracks the performance of its various Web-based services, reported that the problem was “affecting a majority of users”. Google’s last major technical problem occurred in May, leaving millions of people unable to use popular services such as its main search page, as well as Gmail and Google News. A HANDLE ON HORROR Veteran producer Visute Poolvoralaks takes a seat in the director’s chair for the five-segment frightfest ‘Phobia 2’ By Parinyaporn Pajee D A I LY X P R E S S

A

fter a long career in show business, GTH producer Visute Poolvoralaks has donned a director’s cap to realise the dream that was forefront in his mind when he signed up as a rookie with a film company 25 years ago. His debut, one of five shorts in the horror omnibus “Haa Phrang” (“Phobia 2”), marks the first time he has called “action” and “cut!” “When I started, I really wanted to be a director. Now, at 51, that feeling has evaporated so when I was first asked to direct a segment, my first answer was no,” he says. He was asked to step in on

the “Haa Phrang” project following Yongyooth Thongkongtoon’s serious car accident during the filming of his “Khwamjum Sun Tae Rak Chan Yao” (“Best of Times”). Yongyooth was set to direct a

segment for “Haa Phrang”, which needed to start filming. Other GTH directors pleaded with the studio chief and he reluctantly agreed. He says his duties on the set were mainly supervisory, as he had plenty of help from a recovering Yongyooth as well as producerdirector Jira Maligool and Komkrit Treewimol, who was working as acting coach for the cast.

His contribution to the new horror flick is “Hong Tiang Ruam” (“Ward”) and stars singer-actor Worawech “Dan” Danuwong as a teen hospitalised after a motorbike accident. He shares his room with an old man (Kecha Plainwithee) who is in a coma with his family about to pull the plug.

Out of control Visute says that while he had every shot clear in his head after reading the script, the actual shooting wasn’t quite as clear cut. “Everything was late and there was so much I just couldn’t control,” he says. But he admits the experience taught him a valuable lesson about what his directors go through on the set. He says that while directing is not difficult, it is depressing to have to work to a schedule. “Afterwards I asked my filmmakers if being a director could

be described as happy work,” he says. “The truth is exactly as Jira has told me time and time again: if we want perfection, we need to invest time and money. I don’t know whether he had a hidden agenda in making me understand that through this project,” says Visute with a laugh. Asked how he sees his movie coming out, the producer says it’s up to standard but nothing exciting. “It is like made-to-order food, not really different from the basic recipe. And it’s quite a short film, so there’s no real surprise in the story. Maybe if I had the opportunity to direct a fulllength feature, it would be a little more exciting and interested,” he says. Does that mean he’s eyeing a new project? “No,” he says firmly. “It may be years before – or if – I ever want to do it again.”

The Oscar goes to ... GET OUT the calculator, because Oscar voting has become more complicated. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken a long-expected step to ensure that this year’s best-picture winner won’t be hated by 90 per cent of its members: preferential voting. Under the system, votes for the least popular first-choice movie are eliminated and those members’ second choices are taken into account. The process continues until a nominee receives more than 50 per cent of the votes. Academy spokesperson Leslie Unger confirmed that the organisation would apply the same preferential voting system it uses in the nomination process. The move has been in the works since the Academy decided in June to expand the number of best-picture nominees from five to 10. – LOS ANGELES TIMES

For his latest project, though, “32 Thunwa” (“32 December”), Rerkchai has put pen to paper and casts Worawej “Dan” Danuwong, Nong Cha Cha Cha and Apinya “Saipan” Sakuljaroensuk in a romantic comedy about a guy (Dan) who’s suffering from partial amnesia about his involvement with three different women. “Writing on my own has allowed me to drawn on my own experiences, though that doesn’t mean I’m bringing my own love stories into the plot,” he says. Rerkchai also confirms that “32 Thunwa” will be different from his earlier films like “Dumber Heroes”.

“My previous movies used comedy situations pieced together like a patchwork. This one has a more subtle story, though it’s still funny.”

Bang, you’re dust If you’re searching for a new aim in life, then perhaps clay shooting’s for you By William Weir THE HARTFORD COURANT

ave you considered skeet or clay shooting? There are a few clubs here in Thailand but as you might expect, there are many more over in the US, even if most are private clubs that require membership fees. Regis Koontz, president of the Connecticut Skeet Shooting Association, says he’s always looking for new people to bring into the sport. Skeet shooters say it’s a safe sport, but anything that involves shotguns and flying objects requires serious precautions. Koontz will give new shooters safety training and vision tests. Earplugs and eye protection are required.

Chris Civitillo, 63, of Newington, Connecticut, gives a skeet-shooting lesson to Cathy Morfopos, 34, of Montreal.

holds 780 targets for skeet shooting.

XTRA TRIGGER HAPPY >> The second Thai skeet shooting compe-

tition of the year takes place this Saturday and Sunday at Hua Mark sports complex. >> The third and final competition for 2009 is scheduled for December 19 and 20 at the same venue. >> For more information, call (02) 369 1935 or (02) 319 0313 between 10 and 4.30 or visit www.ThaiClayShooting.com.

A round of skeet involves shooting from eight positions in a semi-circle. Clay disks, called skeet or “clay pigeons”, are launched from two directions; some shoot out of the “high house” and the others from the “low house”. There are 25 skeet in a round. “At first, it appears to be very difficult,” Koontz says. “But most people will start breaking targets the first time they’re out.” Koontz started skeet shooting 12 years ago when he was 55. He recently competed in a tournament at the Hartford Gun Club with 130 shooters from New England. Neither age nor

body size play much of a factor in who can participate, he says. Income, on the other hand, is another story. A new shotgun will run you at least $750 for a basic model, says Tom DeVito, manager of the gun club. A custom-made shotgun could set you back “tens of thousands.” A box of skeet runs $5 to $11. And most clubs require annual fees. Hartford Gun Club membership is $540 a year plus a $150 initiation fee. On the other hand, you can hold off buying your own shotgun; Koontz says most clubs have loaner guns or rent them for $10 or $15 an hour. “It’s not a cheap sport by any

means,” Koontz confirms. And you don’t see too many 20somethings shooting clay pigeons. “It’s because they don’t have the money,” he says. “It’s a financial thing at that age. They can’t really afford it.” But if you do join a club, DeVito says, getting started is easy: “There’s always someone glad to give a newbie some instruction.” Time is another reason you don’t see more young people skeet shooting, DeVito says. They’re either in school, trying to get their careers established or raising families. Generally, he says, the typical skeet shooter is middle-aged.

Managing medicine

Thailand continues to earn a strong reputation in the field of quality healthcare management By Kupluthai Pungkanon D A I LY X P R E S S

W

ith Thailand aiming to become Asia’s main medical hub, all its health organisations need to adapt a more proactive approach in terms of quality, cost and access to care. That’s according to Dr Manyat Ruchiwit, dean of the nursing faculty at Thammasat University and director of the university’s international courses – a master of science programme and a doctor of philosophy programme in healthcare management programme. She goes on to say that the programmes’ graduates are imbued with a thorough understanding of current technological advances in the modern world as well as leadership skills that allow them to initiate up-to-the-minute changes in healthcare management. “Healthcare management cannot be administered in a principally profit-seeking manner,” she empha-

sises. “Leaders must be highly trained but ethical. People deserve the right to choose a high standard health service. “Research from an American study in 1997 showed there would be in shortfall in healthcare practitioners – doctors, nurse and so on – for the first 15 years of this century and that this would have a massive impact on society. The biggest shortage would be in the ninth year, which is 2009.” Manyat says that the reasons for deficit vary but include a declining interest in medicine as a career choice are that among young people, rapid changes in technology, over treatment and access to legislation, especially in the West. “Today, a lot of unnecessary laboratories tests are carried out simply to prevent malpractice cases from arising,” she says. “Students should be able to develop analytical skills and make ethical decisions related to health-

care management based on theoretical principles. They should also be able to provide services that are based on the health policies, laws, and the cultures of nations,” Manyat notes. The two-year course provides not only a through grounding on health systems, policies, legal frameworks and ethics, both at the national and global levels, but also helps develops business acumen. In this, the department receives assistance from the faculty of commerce and accountancy as well as the George Washington University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the World Health Organisation’s regional office and the Pan-American Health Organisation. A former student in this field herself, Manyat notes that Thailand’s clinicians, hospitals and administrators need to work continuously to increase their effectiveness in healthcare management.

alance exercises are quick, easy and effective, experts say. They can be done with or without specialised equipment, depending on how advanced you are. When starting out, however, make sure to do them near a chair or a wall so you can steady yourself if need be. As always, talk to a doctor before starting a new exercise regimen if you have any concerns. A few examples:

■ Stand on one foot. You can do

this anywhere, anytime. Do it while brushing your teeth. Or

waiting around somewhere. The National Institute on Ageing recommends that older people hold the pose for up to 10 seconds, and repeat it 10 or 15 times before switching to the other foot and doing the same.

■ Heel-toe walk: Take 20 steps while focusing on a spot ahead of you. ■ Stand, sit or kneel on a half-ball, a piece of exercise equipment with a hard, flat bottom and an air-filled, rounded platform. Balance-training guides for older people are available from the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Institute on Ageing.

No Ferrari deal for Fisichella Giancarlo Fisichella, widely touted for a move to Ferrari for the Italian Grand Prix next week, will instead be remaining with Force India at Monza, team boss Villya Mallya insisted. Fisichella move appeared on the cards after Force India’s commerical director Ian Phillips said he was expecting an offer from Ferrari. But Mallya dismissed the notion of losing his number one driver, telling the BBC: “Fisichella has himself clarified that he has ‘not received any invitation from Ferrari’ and went on to add that ‘he was looking forward to driving the Force India car at the Monza GP’,” Mallya said. – AFP

Tamarine Tanasugarn slumped to a 6-3 7-5 first-round defeat at the hands of Latvia’s Anastasia Sevastova in the US Open on Tuesday. The Thai veteran, who was playing her first match in a comeback from an elbow injury that’s still bothering her, was up 3-1 in the second set but let her lead slip. Tamarine hasn’t been beyond the first round since 2004, the year after she made a splash at Flushing Meadows by reaching the last 16. The 32-year-old decided she’s not fit enough to play the US Open doubles. – Daily Xpress

ENGLAND COMING Worawi extracts promise from PL chairman Richards D A I LY X P R E S S

T

hailand will host a glamour fixture with crowd favourites England either at the end of this year or the beginning of the next said the Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi. Many local fans had abandoned their hopes of seeing stars such as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard in the flesh after earlier rumours of a possible England trip seemed to have come to nothing. However Worawi, who had a meeting with Sir Dave Richards, the Barclays Premier League chairman, during his recent trip to Britain, delivered the news fans have been waiting to hear: a star-studded English team would certainly visit the country. “He [Richards] gave me his word that the England side would come to Thailand.

I planned my exit last year: Alonso Real Madrid midfielder has admitted he planned to quit Liverpool from the moment Anfield boss Rafa Benitez tried to sell him last year. Alonso was disappointed to hear that Benitez was willing to let him go and resolved to leave when the right opportunity arose. “It was a very difficult decision for me to make,” he told Sky Sports News. “After five years I have experienced wonderful nights at Anfield, to have experienced the support of probably the best fans in the world. That’s why I have always been very grateful and I will always have them in my mind and it has been a pleasure. “Last year the club proposed me that I might have to be sold to find funds for new players. It was a difficult decision or difficult moment to accept that. I accepted that as a professional and I thought that maybe it was time for a change.” – AFP

However, the date is yet to be decided because they want to wait until the draw for the 2010 World Cup finals at the end of this year.”

Reid persuaded to stay Worawi’s England trip proved fruitful in other matters, as he managed to persuade Peter Reid to continue his job as national coach despite the Englishman looking poised to accept the assistant manager’s post at Premier League club Stoke City. Worawi said he would be asking the veteran coach to look into the possibility of staging a na-

tional training camp in England.“Given his strong relationship with several Premier League clubs, I might ask him to contact them about the possibility of holding training camps at their facilities. “We will see when the time comes and choose the most suitable one,” said Worawi. According to Ong-art Korsinkha, the FAT secretarygeneral, Reid, who is still in Britain, would return to the Kingdom next week to begin preparations for a double-header against Singapore in the Asian Cup qualifiers.

hai golfing hero Prayad Marksaeng is the first player selected by Asian team captain Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki for the fourth edition of the Royal Trophy that will take place at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi from January 8-10. Ozaki’s selection of the 43year-old Thai is the first step in the Japanese golfing giant’s building of an Asian team that will defend the Royal Trophy against Europe. The appointment is well deserved after Prayad registered his best career season in 2008 with three Japan Tour victories including the prestigious Dunlop Phoenix Tournament. He was arguably the best performer for the Asian Team at the Royal Trophy 2009, delivering a perfect score of three victories from his three matches against the Europeans. “I am delighted to be selected by captain Ozaki to represent Asia at the fourth edition of the Royal Trophy. Defeating the Europeans on Thai soil and securing the trophy for Asia for the first time ever was extremely special. It was definitely one of the greatest achievements of my career. “It was especially meaningful because we defeated Europe which is a continent with a tremendous golf history and a big pool of great players. It was the first time Asia won the trophy and it earned us a place in golf ’s history books. “But more importantly, we were playing for stewardship of the trophy which was graciously donated by His Majesty, our beloved King of Thailand. Winning the matches and securing the right to keep the Royal Trophy in Thailand was a great honour,” said Prayad.

Arsenal mull appeal on diving verdict

WAS IT FOUL PLAY? Croatia say Modric was targeted ahead of crucial qualifier AFP, Watford, England

ngland winger James Milner has ruled out conspiracy theories that Croatia midfielder Luka Modric was deliberately injured ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifier at Wembley next week. Croatia FA chiefs are frustrated that key midfielder Modric broke a leg in a tackle with Birmingham’s Lee Bowyer just 10 days before a match against England that could decide the World Cup fate of both teams. They already have bitter memories of how key striker Eduardo also suffered a broken leg playing against the same opposition for Arsenal in February 2008 and Croatia FA supremo Vlatko Markovic on Tuesday said: “First Eduardo, now Luka Modric. This is horrible. I can only ask myself if it was really an accident. “I’m close to thinking it was done to us deliberately before the England match. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what happened to Luka. He is irreplaceable.”

Just bad luck: Milner But Markovic’s claims have been quickly dismissed in Fabio Capello’s camp with Aston Villa star Milner, speaking at England’s team hotel in Watford, saying: “It’s just bad luck, that’s the way it is in football. People are making more of it but obviously it’s nonsense. We just go out there and try and play as well as we can. You don’t look at who you are tack-

He added: “You’ve seen what a good player Modric has been since he’s been in England, he makes Tottenham tick and it’s the same at international level. He will be a big miss. “But as players you want to play in the best competitions in the world against the best players. “In a way it helps you if the best players aren’t there but also you want to challenge them.

YOU’VE SEEN WHAT A GOOD PLAYER MODRIC IS.HE MAKES TOTTENHAM TICK .HE WILL BE A BIG MISS. James Milner That’s what being a professional in any sport is all about.” Milner, 23, is hoping to make a big impact against Croatia and

also against Slovenia in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday, having finally made his debut in the recent draw in Holland after winning a record 46 caps at Under 21 level. He showed great potential as a youngster, becoming the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer at the age 16 years and 309 days – just three months after Wayne Rooney had set the previous record. But his progress has always been slower in comparison to the Manchester United striker. He said: “That goal put me on the map but Wayne came through at a very similar time and progressed very quickly at a very similar age. In a way, he took a lot of limelight off me.”

Arsenal will study Uefa’s justification for handing Eduardo a two-match European ban for diving before deciding whether to appeal against the verdict. European football’s governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatia international for “deceiving the referee” after he tumbled theatrically to win a penalty in last week’s Champions League play-off against Celtic. Despite there appearing to be no contact with Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez awarded the spotkick, which Eduardo converted himself to set Arsenal on their way to a comprehensive 3-1 win and into the lucrative group stages. The dive caused a storm of controversy and Uefa took action against Eduardo on Tuesday. Arsenal are understood to have made a 19page submission to Uefa ahead of the hearing, which clearly made little impact on the panel. The Gunners have three days to lodge an appeal against the suspension which, if upheld, would rule Eduardo out of the Champions League group matches away at Standard Liege on September 16 and at home to Olympiacos on September 29. “The club is disappointed with Uefa’s decision to suspend Eduardo for two Champions League matches starting with Standard Liege on September 16,” a statement from Arsenal read. “Once we receive Uefa’s rationale, we will make a decision on the next steps.”

Berbatov has been dating Elena Shtilianov on and off.

anchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has been threatened for sending flirty texts to a gangster’s lover. The £30 million star allegedly made a series of great passes on model Nikoleta Lozanova, who was Playmate of the Year in his Bulgarian homeland in 2006. Nikoleta’s boyfriend, Georgi “The Head” Stoilov, a mobster with a reputation for extreme violence was furious when told

of the suggestive messages. The gangster replied to the texts warning Berbatov to keep clear for his own good, the Sun quoted a Bulgarian magazine, as saying. Stoilov became head of one of his country’s most feared clans when a bomb in a lift wiped out his father Stoil Stoilov and his minders in 2004. Berbatov has been dating Elena Shtilianov on and off for three months and there is talk of pregnancy and

marriage. Friends of Berbatov dismissed Nikoleta, 31, a former lover of Liverpool reserve goalkeeper Nikolai Mihailov as “a fantasist”. They claim she invented the texts to wind up Stoilov, and that Berbatov was surprised to receive threats from the mobster. Berbatov was quoted as saying: “I've met her once, when she was with Nikolai, but nothing happened.” A book last year claimed that

a warlord kidnapped Berbatov in order to persuade him to switch teams when he was 18.

No Klinsi for Germany The president of Germany’s football federation dismissed speculation that former coach Juergen Klinsmann may return as an adviser to his successor, Joachim Loew. Theo Zwanziger said: “I have heard nothing of the possibility of installing Juergen as an adviser.”

Sharapova makes comeback at US Open with fluid win AP, New York

fter missing last year’s US Open with a shoulder injury, former champion Maria Sharapova returned to Flushing Meadows with an impressive 6-3 6-0 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria on Tuesday. Several hours after her Russian compatriot Dinara Safina went perilously close to becoming the first No 1-seeded woman to lose in the first round of the Open, 2006 champion Sharapova gave a much stronger performance. The three-time Grand Slam titlist produced 29 winners – 23 more than her 98th-ranked opponent. Sharapova showed no signs of the shoulder tear that forced her to have surgery in October and kept her off the tour for nearly 10 months. “This is a Grand Slam. You’ve got to get going from the first match,” Sharapova said. “After being gone, this is what it’s all about.” In addition to the tennis skills and grit that once took her to No 1 in the rankings, Sharapova always has placed an emphasis on fashion. On this night, her black dress carried bold, metallic accents, paired with a matching, ’60s-style silver headband to create an outfit she described as a tribute to New York’s skyline. Nearly undone by 11 doublefaults and 48 total unforced errors, Safina was a point away from a 4-0 deficit in the third set before coming back to beat Olivia Rogowska of Australia 6-

It’s a bit weird.” In other upset results: 276thranked Jesse Witten of the United States downed No 29seeded Igor Andreev 6-4 6-0 6-2 on the men’s side; Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium defeated No 16 Virginie Razzano of France 6-4 6-3; and Shahar Peer of Israel eliminated No 32

THIS IS A GRAND SLAM.YOU’VE GOT TO GET GOING FROM THE FIRST MATCH Maria Sharapova Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-2 62. Otherwise, winners included 2004 US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, past runners-up Elena Dementieva of Russia and

Serbian Jelena Jankovic, No 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Russian No 13 Nadia Petrova. Men’s winners included second-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland, 2008 Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia and that tournament’s runner-up, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, along with Spanish No 10 Fernando Verdasco, No 11 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, No 16 Marin Cilic of Croatia, Czech No 17 Tomas Berdych and No 22 Sam Querrey of the United States. Neither Safina nor Rogowska played particularly well. They combined for 24 double-faults, 113 unforced errors and 15 service breaks over 2 1/2 hours.

ust 15 months after winning the French Open and becoming world No 1, 11th-seeded Ana Ivanovic made her first opening-round exit in 20 Grand Slam appearances on Tuesday at the US Open. The 21-year-old Serbian beauty squandered a match point and was ousted by Ukranian Kateryna Bondarenko 2-6 6-3 7-6 (9/7) in a match-up of injured rivals trying to outlast each other. “Obviously it hurts,” Ivanovic said. “I’m really disappointed that I made a few mistakes in the important moments and my forehand let me down on a few occasions. “I set myself up and made the mistake in the net every time. It’s a little frustrating.” Ivanovic reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the French Open and the third round at the Australian Open after fighting back from a shoulder injury, results that will leave her pondering a lost year in her career. “It’s very disappointing. It hurts. I’m sure I will have sleepless nights,” she said. “But I have to accept it and try to put this year behind me and try to learn from it. “As much as it hurts and was disappointing, I learned a lot about myself and what I have to do in order to become a better player. Ivanovic’s instincts and thoughts are at war with each other when she is on the court and her results has slipped as a consequence.“When I follow my instincts, I play great,” Ivanovic said. “Then I think I can make other shots and I feel maybe I should go different direction. That’s when bad shot selection comes. That’s just mind and emotions.”

ANNIKA GETS A BIRDIE Swedish golfing great Annika Sorenstam announced the birth of her first child, daughter Ava Madelyn McGee, who is six pounds 10 ounces and 19 inches long.

A LITTLE BIT UGLY

World No 1 Dinara Safina pumps her fist after defeating Olivia Rogowska of Australia.

Among the few positives Dinara Safina could take from a sloppy performance and narrowly averting an epic first-round upset at the US Open was that her brother had the same start to his Open title run. World No 1 Safina, still seeking her first Grand Slam crown, outlasted 167th-ranked Australian teen Olivia Rogowska 6-7 (5/7) 6-2 6-4 yesterday, doing nothing to justify her lofty ranking. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing,” Safina said. “It happens that you have a bad day and you want to say, ‘I hate everything.’ But at the end of the day, you win the match like this, I would say a little bit ugly, and you made it. “Everything goes wrong, but you still somehow manage to pull the match out, and that’s what counts for me. Hopefully from today it’s going to get better.” Safin’s brother Marat, playing in what he expects will be his last Slam event, won his first Slam title at the US Open in 2000 after struggling through the first round. Safina hopes to duplicate that feat. “I remember he said he was struggling from the first round, but he made it. So maybe I’m following his steps this time,” Safina said. “When he won US Open, he almost lost to [France’s Sebastien] Grosjean in the first round. He won 7-6 in the fifth set. He was up and the rain started, so they finished another day. Then he had another like difficult match.” Safina was reluctant to look beyond her next foe, German Kristina Barrois, but allowed herself a moment to imagine lifting the championship trophy on the same court where her brother did the same nine years ago. “If it happens, definitely it will be the best day of my life, because it will happen here where my brother won it,” Safina said. “For me it would be even more special. I will do everything to hold it.” Safina, whose best US Open showing was last year’s semi-final run, lost to Serena Williams at this year’s Australian Open final, to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open final and to Venus Williams in a Wimbledon semi-final.“In the French Open, I won all the matches 6-Love, 6-1. Did it help? Not really,” Safina said. “Definitely it happens like this sometimes. I know that.” – AFP
