Saving a bygone beauty Samphraeng residents fight to preserve the charm of Old Bangkok By Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong D A I LY X P R E S S

he Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is backing similar efforts by locals to conserve the historical charm of Samphraeng with plans for a cultural festival of its own. The 42-rai neighbourhood in Phra Nakhon district is a showcase for King Rama IV and V’s plans to modernise 19th-century Siam with shophouses, fresh markets and trams.

Festival of historical treats “Tarn Arharn, Chim Kanom, Chom Ardee Samprang” (“Enjoy Food, Desserts and Learn About Samphraeng’s DAILY

More than 300 families living in the neighbourhood’s 144 heritage buildings will join the event. Community leader Teeraporn Kachaceevar says about 40 shops will also be part of celebrations, which will include an exhibition on bygone days in Samphraeng. Traditional plays and outdoor cinema will add to the nostalgia. “We’re hoping the Suntara-

The idea of the festival is to bring the area to the attention of the average city resident. “We want people to be able to jump in a taxi and ask for Phraeng Phuthon without adding that

it’s near Chao Por Sua Shrine.” After holding a similar event on a smaller scale in 1998, the community believes this time it can do better. Teeraporn says residents are desperate to promote their case for sustainable development of the area. “There are plans for building and infrastructure but we believe the community should be consulted over all new development.” Samphraeng was home to the country’s first market of luxury goods, opened during the reign of King Rama V. Many of the other commercial buildings that first rose here when roads replaced canals are still operating. “So far 10 to 15 per cent are still in business as shops,” says Samphraeng Community president Kanlawat Talathat.

The Culture Ministry will propose changes to the sevencategory film-rating symbols, including Arabic translations of numerals, Permanent Secretary for Culture Veera Rojpojanarat said yesterday. The proposal, which features ratings of Nor 13+, Nor 15+, Nor 18+ and Chor 20+ to make it easier to understand universally and places an X mark in front of each symbol, will soon be submitted to the National Committee for Film and Video, he said. Film and Video Classification Office director Pradit Prosil said more than 10 movies have been submitted under the new rating system and no complaints have been filed by film producers or cinema operators. He said the office will speed up plans for a public opinion poll asking if the films submitted were properly rated.

Quicker hip surgery The Police General Hospital, the first in Southeast Asia, has completed a sophisticated type of surgery to replace hip joints. Dr Wiroj Larbphaiboonphong, a senior orthopaedist, said the Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty, of the Birmingham type, has been successfully performed on 55 patients. This new computerised technology inflicts smaller wounds on patients. Patients who undergo the Birmingham-type surgery can go home within two days, compared to many days required by conventional surgery.

Well-rounded US model wins hearty applause The appearance in Glamour magazine of a model who fills more of the page than fashion’s usual rake-thin stars is getting big cheers from US women. Lizzie Miller has blonde hair and an effortless smile, but it is her chubby tummy and fuller legs that are winning attention. Miller, 20, graces an article on feeling good in one’s own skin – not something that fashion industry critics believe the regular army of impossibly sculpted youngsters promotes. More than 1,000 readers have responded since Glamour’s September issue came out. “I am gasping with delight ... I love the woman on P 194,” one wrote. “Anyone who thinks that this model is unhealthy should have their head examined. She’s tall, has an athletic build and a bit of a tummy. End of story,” another said. AFP

Jackson estate will pay ‘extraordinary’ funeral costs Among quirky pricing associated with burial will be a bill for a batch of fresh ricotta doughnuts from Connecticut A F P , Los Angeles

M

oney from Michael Jackson’s estate can be used to pay what were described as the “extraordinary” costs of the pop icon’s funeral, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Wednesday. Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved a request from Jackson’s mother after lawyers for administrators of the singer’s estate said they were willing to pay for the send-off at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Jeryll Cohen, an attorney for the administrators, John Branca and John McClain, said

the costs of the service were likely to be steep. “The expenses will be extraordinary, but Michael Jackson was extraordinary,” Cohen said, without specifying the anticipated bill.

No objection Margaret Lodise, an attorney representing the interests of Jackson’s three children, said she did not object to using estate funds to pay for the funeral. “It seems to me this particular expense is not going to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back regarding the sol-

vency of the estate,” Lodise said. Among the quirky costs associated with Jackson’s funeral will be a bill for a batch of fresh ricotta doughnuts from a restaurant in Connecticut, the entertainment news website TMZ.com reported. Jackson was to be laid to rest this morning at Forest Lawn in a ceremony which will be attended by only close family and friends. The 50-year-old singer is to be interred in the cemetery’s Great Mausoleum, an elaborate neo-classical building inspired by Genoa’s famous Campo Santo. The mausoleum is also home to the final resting places of Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and Carole Lombard.

An expatriate professor was yesterday jailed for nine weeks for molesting two female students in his office at the University of Hong Kong. Terence Shortall, 54, an associate professor of education at the university, was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault. He was also fined HK$5,000 (Bt22,000). The professor’s first victim, a 21-year-old student, testified how Shortall touched her back and inner thigh when she went to his office for help with her studies when she faced being kicked off her course. Shortall kissed her then grabbed her hand and placed it on his groin. A second student said Shortall pressed her legs between his and tried to kiss her. Shortall claimed the stories were fabricated. “I wouldn’t do anything stupid to jeopardise my career,” he said. – DPA

HK star Andy Lau apologizes for lying about marriage Critics claim that he wanted to protect his image as an idol A P , Hong Kong

eteran Hong Kong actorsinger Andy Lau has apologized for lying about his marriage, saying he behaved inappropriately for a public figure. Lau denied that he was married in an interview with Hong Kong's Cable TV in February, but Hong Kong journalists last week discovered marriage records from the Clark County Recorder’s Office in the US state of Nevada that showed the 47-year-old star had wed Malaysian girlfriend Carol Chu in June 2008. Talking on a hand-held mobile phone and texting while driving are both illegal in Britain. “The film is hitting home because it has a hard edge and it taps into something that lots of people do but know they shouldn’t,” said the film’s director, Peter Watkins-Hughes. The film has been discussed on

graphic British public service announcement about the dangers of sending text messages while driving has become an Internet hit and sparked debate around the world. The Gwent police force in Wales said on Wednesday that an excerpt from a video it made for use in schools has been viewed more than 6 million times on YouTube and other websites since it was posted last month. The 30-minute film shows a bubbly teenager named Cassie – “a nice girl from a nice Gwent Valleys family” – who triggers a pile-up that kills four people when she tries to send a text message while driving. The graphic, slow-motion depiction of the crash shows heads going through windshields, bloodied bodies and the lifeless eyes of a baby.

from Beijing, where he was filming a music video. Critics say Lau lied about his marriage to protect his image as an idol. One of Asia’s biggest celebrities, the star of “Infernal Affairs” and “House of Flying Daggers” has appeared in more than 100 movies since his debut in 1982. Dubbed one of Chinese pop’s “Four Heavenly Kings” in the 1990s, he also enjoys a successful recording career. Lau denied on Tuesday that he and his wife have any children. He said on his website he and Chu had married so they could try to have children through artificial insemination, which is only authorised for married couples in Hong Kong. “I don’t have any children. I don’t have any sons or daughters. The children you have photographed are the children of my relatives or friends,” he said.

Man who ‘smacked children 2,800 times’ goes on trial A man who is alleged to have smacked his children 2,800 times over a period of two years went on trial in Germany on Wednesday for deliberate corporal injury. Smacking children has been controversial round the world. New Zealanders voted by 90 per cent in a referendum last month to legalise “reasonable” slapping. Prosecutors said the man, 47, had punished his five children, aged 1 to 10, for “trivial” errors, mostly hitting them with the flat of his hand, but had sometimes used a stick. The man, appearing in court in Bitburg in the west of the country, also faced four more serious charges of caning his daughters on the bottom, the bare soles and the knees. Sweden is believed to have been the first nation, in 1979, to criminalise smacking. D PA

alaysia’s Cameron Highlands are a popular destination for folks keen to see some natural wonders and the good, green use to which man can put them. British colonial governor William Cameron turned the lush mountain into a posh resort for English millionaires during the 1880s, knowing they’d love the view and the year-round summer breeze that the locale offers 5,000 feet above sea level. Today the orderly terraces of tea plantations and the scented beauty of strawberry farms and rose gardens add to the allure. The BOH Tea Garden, which has won awards for creativity and innovation, is part of a triple-plantation of black tea owned by a firm established in 1929. The Boh, Sungei Palas and Fairlie plantations together cover 1,200 hectares and produce 600 tonnes of leaves a year. That’s about five million cups a day, so bring plenty of biscuits. BOH’s Parthipan Ramadass will give you a tour and explain what it takes to concoct a special taste.

Hi-tech tea It takes hi-tech machines these days, to wither, crush and ferment the leaves. Baking them at 100 degrees Celsius halts oxidation, and finally what’s left is sorted by size, with the dregs destined to become fertiliser.

“Plueang” – a Thai musical i nspired by Terrence McNally’s stage adaptation of the British film “The Full Monty” – was originally staged a year ago at the Rangsit campus. Now it’s come downtown to M Theatre. The popular movie was also a big hit with “Plueang” playwright and director Pannasak “Khru Tu” Sukhee, an assistant professor at BU. “These six men are ordinary people, neither rich nor goodlooking,” he chuckles, “but they have to perform a strip show to prove their worth – not just as human beings, but as men, fathers and husbands. “I was thinking what if this actually happened in Thailand, where all kinds of people, including university graduates, are now losing their jobs.” Khru Tu not only transplants the characters and the locale from England to Bangkok’s Chimplee Alley, he ties the story to Buddhist teachings. “Buddhism suggests we plueang – strip off – what we use to cover our true self.” Among the cast changes this year, the lead character Chartchai, a university grad forced to drive a taxi, is portrayed by Sasit Suthikasem, a BU

The Black Russian in the fridge Smirnoff Black No 55 gets its clever taste from, among other things, a century-old tin pot

COURTESY OF DIAGEO MOET HENNESSY (THAILAND)

you can’t smell vodka on the breath, making it perfect for secret boozing as well as multi-ingredient cocktails. Russians bang it back unattended from the shot glass, of course, or maybe with a splash of beer. Elsewhere, the modern trend is vodka with coke or juice, though there are no rules – it parties well with other spirits, like martini, brandy and liqueur. But yes, all right, if you need to neutralise the alcohol a bit, drop some pickled fruit in it, like olives. Keep the bottle in the freezer – except when you’re actually drinking from it, we mean – and remember that empty stomachs tend to react with alarm to quantities of vodka, so at least get a few slices of toast with caviar down the hole first.

odka lovers, glasses ready? Let Smirnoff fill them with its Black No 55, boasting more “style and substance” than the customary red label. It’s purer, still disarmingly smooth and has more flavour – yes, flavour, but not that artificial fruity flavouring that robs vodka of its crazedCossack-riding-across-the-steppe realism. There’s a rich, distinctive flair in the aftertaste of every sip, keeping it enjoyable even when taken straight. The Black series gets its character from the copper pot used in the fi-

nal stage of distillation, just before it’s filtered through birch charcoal. There’s only one copper pot – the original Smirnoff family pot that’s been in use for 150 years – so they can only make one small batch a day. Smirnoff likes to tell people (after a few snootfuls) that back in the day, Russian peasants loved its vodka, but so did the tsars and other elite types. Vodka was the favourite tipple of Tsar Peter the Great. No surprise there – that’s why he was great! Tsarina Catherine Also the Great handed out bottles as gifts to visiting aristocrats. They discovered, like millions of teenagers since, that

Olympic boxing hero Worapoj Petchkhoom would be banned from the sport for three months for appearing in a gay magazine. Compared to the underwear ads featuring another Olympic champ, Somrak Khamsing, Worapoj’s images in the July edition of Stage were pretty meek. General Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of

Thailand, admitted at a press conference that the shots weren’t obscene, but he insisted that Worapoj (who says he’s straight) had tarnished the reputation of the national athletes.

IF THE SAME PICTURES HAD APPEARED IN A WOMEN’S MAGAZINE,THE PUBLIC WOULD BE CLAMOURING FOR MORE AND THE BOXING ASSOCIATION WOULD BE SMILING.

If the same pictures had appeared in a women’s magazine, the public would be clamouring for more and the Boxing Association would be smiling. The obvious subtext here is that anything associated with homosexuality is bad. In supposedly less tolerant Britain, David Beckham told BBC Radio he is “honoured” to be known as a gay icon. “I’m quite sure of my feminine side,” he told Sports Illustrated, “and I’ve not got a problem with that at all. These days it’s the norm, and it should be.” Attitude magazine’s current “Sex” issue has revealing photos of rugby player Nick Youngquest, not the first time he’s graced gay publications. With a dozen other players, he also appeared in the gay-targeted 2009 “Gods of Football” calendar, a fund-raiser for a breast-cancer charity. These straight sportsmen can do this without fear of hurting their career. What matters is how they perform on the field, not the macho image they need to uphold. The moral in all of this for gay Thais is clear: Don’t fantasise about national sports heroes, or even dream of becoming one. This will push Thai gay athletes deeper in the closet, and stop many younger gays from taking up sports seriously. Thailand may never know the likes of Australia’s Matthew Mitcham and, I guess, it doesn’t deserve to anyway.

Hull snap up Vennegoor Hull have recruited former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to bolster their bid to stay in the Premier League. The 30-year-old Dutchman was a free agent after leaving Celtic at the end of last season, so Hull were able to complete his signing outside of the transfer window, which closed on Tuesday. He has signed a two-year deal. – AFP

The 20-year-old Obertan was struggling with the back complaint when he joined United on a four-year contract from Bordeaux in the off-season. He was signed for around £3 million to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Real Madrid. – AFP

Loeb gains early edge on Hirvonen French defending champion Sebastien Loeb gained an early advantage over series leader Mikko Hirvonen after the opening Australian round of the World Rally Championship yesterday. Loeb’s factory Citroen was marginally quicker than the Finn around the two special stages held at Murwillumbah in northern New South Wales, although both drivers were off the outright pace. Loeb’s team-mate Sebastien Ogier led after the second of the rally’s 35 stages with a combined time over the two brief runs of three minutes 35.1 seconds. Norwegian Ford driver Henning Solberg was in second, 3.5 seconds back while Loeb was 0.8 of a second further away in third place. Hirvonen finished in sixth spot. – AFP

PRESSURE ON MESSI Argentine star must shine in qualifier against Brazil A P , Sao Paulo, Brazil

razil are not too worried about Argentina star Lionel Messi ahead of their World Cup qualifier tomorrow. Brazil coach Dunga said yesterday he does not plan any special defensive scheme to try to contain the Barcelona playmaker when the rivals meet in Rosario. “Every player deserves attention,” Dunga said after Brazil’s practice at the Granja Comary training camp just outside Rio de Janeiro. “You can’t mark only one player and let 10 others remain free.” Dunga praised Messi’s skills and recognised the dangers he can create, but said Brazil have to play their own game and not worry too much about the opposing players. “It’s natural to have some precautions,” Dunga said. “But we have to play like we normally do.” Messi has told Argentine media that although both teams

Football, rugby fight over pitch Football and rugby are involved in a bizarre tug of war over Fiorentina’s Franchi stadium due to a fixture clash. The Italian football association announced on Tuesday that the Serie A match between Fiorentina and Parma would be held on November 21. However, the date and stadium have already been booked for a rugby union international between Italy and world champions South Africa, for which tickets are already on sale. Neither Fiorentina nor Parma have commented on the clash but a spokesman for the Italian Rugby Federation said all parties, which includes the city of Florence, which owns the stadium, were working on a solution. One possibility is that the football match will be moved to either December 2 or 16 or the rugby match would have to be moved to another stadium. – A F P have great players, he thinks Argentina have what it takes to beat the Brazilians. Messi, who is from Rosario, says he is motivated, and reportedly scored five times in practice on Wednesday. Tomorrow’s match is key to Argentina, who are only fourth in South American qualifying for next year’s World Cup in South Africa. Brazil lead the group with 27 points, one more than Chile and three more than third-place Paraguay. Argentina have 22 points, and a loss could put the team in danger of missing out on football’s biggest

showcase for the first time since 1970. The top four nations automatically qualify, while the fifth-place nation will face a play-off with the fourth-place finisher in the Concacaf region. Although Argentina were under the most pressure, Dunga said he doesn’t expect the Argentines to play overly aggressive or violently. But some of the Brazilians are bracing for a physical match. “As always, they will be playing hard,” Brazil striker Robinho said. “We know they will give all they have to beat us.”

ifa says it has banned Chelsea from signing any players for the next year because it encouraged a French player to break his contract and sign for the club. Fifa said yesterday that Chelsea can’t register new players, from England or abroad, during the next two transfer windows – in January 2010 and the next off-season. Fifa’s Dispute Resolution Chamber made the ruling after Lens complained that Chelsea lured Gael Kakuta to break his contract with the French club and move to London. The dispute panel banned also Kakuta from playing for four months, and ordered Kakuta and Chelsea to pay Lens ¤780,000 in compensation. Chelsea must pay Lens a further ¤130,000 as a training fee. Chelsea can appeal the decision.

Trezeguet to leave Juve David Trezeguet plans to leave Juventus at the end of the season, the French striker announced yesterday. “Sooner or later there’s an end to everything. Nothing has changed regarding my relationship with the club and I never asked to leave, the contract was never a problem. It’s a decision that I made some time ago,” Trezeguet said. Trezeguet has fallen down the pecking order for Juventus strikers, behind Vincenzo Iaquinta, Amauri and captain Alessandro Del Piero at times. The 31-year-old Trezeguet is in his 10th season with Juve, having scored 116 goals in 195 Serie A games, but only one goal last season. Trezeguet wouldn’t commit when asked about where he might play in the future. “I don’t know. It’s not the time to talk about that. We’re only two rounds into the season.”

TRAGEDY LIFTS DEFOE Striker reveals heartache behind his new lease of life AFP, Watford, England

ngland striker Jermain Defoe has revealed the secret torment he went through watching his half-brother die at the age of just 26 and says it has inspired him to produce the best form of his life. Defoe, who has scored six goals already for Tottenham and England this season, is rapidly becoming a key player for his country and is a serious contender to partner Wayne Rooney as Fabio Capello’s side prepare for the World Cup. The 26-year-old hopes to play a part in England’s friendly against Slovenia tomorrow and the crucial qualifier against Croatia at Wembley four days later when victory would be enough to ensure the team reaches South Africa. But Defoe admitted his impressive form has been fired by personal tragedy. Just five months ago his halfbrother Jade, a talented rapper and DJ, died of head injuries in hospital after being attacked on the street in Leytonstone, east London. “I remember the day he died,” Defoe said. “I was training on the Friday before the Man United game and my mum turned up at the training ground. The manager said to me, ‘Your mum’s in the car park.’ “I knew straight away when I saw her face. She basically just said to me, ‘I think he’s got two hours to live.’ So I had to get myself to the hospital and just be there for him. “I was there when he died, it was crazy. All the family were

Tottenham Hotspur’s Jermain Defoe is in blistering form for Tottenham and England. there and his close friends too. I missed the Man United game but obviously some things are more important than football. “It was strange to be honest. The year before that I had lost my nan. But look at my brother. He was 26 years old. You don’t expect to see that. “When people die it’s easier to understand when they’re ill and you prepare yourself. “You know it’s going to happen at some time, but when you just get a phone call like that it’s terrible. It hit the family hard. It was hard with him being so young. You can’t really understand it.” Defoe’s response has been to concentrate even harder on achieving his potential on the

I KNEW STRAIGHT AWAY WHEN I SAW HER FACE.SHE BASICALLY JUST SAID TO ME,‘I THINK HE’S GOT TWO HOURS TO LIVE.’ Jermain Defoe pitch and so far this season it has reaped rewards.

“It changed me,” he admitted. “I actually sat down with my cousin just recently and said that the last year has been really difficult. “But sometimes in life you get difficult times and at some point you get good times. This is my good time now and I’m really enjoying it. I just want to keep myself strong and keep focused and make sure I have a good year. “I think when you’re playing it’s the only place you get away from everything. You focus on football when you’re on the pitch. When you’re off the pitch you think about things. The reason why you play, get on with it and do so well is because that’s where you get your peace.”

Twelve of the 20 clubs that spent the most money on players in Europe’s five biggest leagues went on to win the title over the last four years, and 90 per cent of the top-spending clubs in those leagues have gone on to finish in the top three, according to research published Wednesday. The Castrol Performance Analysis predicts that Real Madrid may be right in thinking they can loosen Barcelona’s grip on the Spanish League title after spending $372.5 million during the transfer window, far more than any other football team. Manchester City also have grounds for optimism in their bid to win the league title for the first time in 42 years. The Sky Blues have invested £124 million in new players, making the club the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer. “This level of expenditure should be enough to break open the closed shop at the head of the table where Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have filled the top four places for the last four years,” the analysis said. Manager Mark Hughes’s spending spree has brought in Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure to the City of Manchester Stadium to join existing players, including Brazil forward Robinho. City’s expected progress mirrors a trend that runs through the league table, underlining the link between spending money on new players and eventual league position, the research says.

uud van Nistelrooy believes his recovery from a serious knee injury has given him the confidence to stick it out and fight for playing time at Real Madrid. Madrid have spent about $360 million to revamp their squad, buying scoring threats Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka. Despite the wealth of talent, the 33-year-old Van Nistelrooy is confident he

can break into coach Manuel Pellegrini’s line-up even with Gonzalo Higuain and captain Raul Gonzalez ahead in the pecking order. “The easiest thing for me to have done would have been to leave for a lesser team. But I’m not going to leave Real Madrid,” Van Nistelrooy said yesterday. “I want to know what I’m capable of. There are still a lot of options when it comes to playing.”

Van Nistelrooy said it was just a matter of time before he got back to his best form. “I know I can play at the highest level. Physically, I feel better than before the injury,” he said. “I only need to find my rhythm and that will come with matches.”

Sidelined in November Van Nistelrooy had been sidelined by knee surgery since last November.

The Dutchman has scored 60 goals in 89 appearances and won two league trophies since joining from Manchester United in 2006. He was the Spanish league’s leading scorer during the 2006-07 season. “The doctor who operated on me said that I could play three more years and then when I retire from football I won’t have any problems,” Van Nistelrooy said. “Before the injury I didn’t feel good. I lost three years.”

flight to Krabi province right away, according to Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT). The Spaniard will be staying at the Rayavadee Resort for a week and will involve himself in promotional activity for the southern province. oger Federer used to wonder how he was ever going to beat Lleyton Hewitt, but the situation will be reversed when the world’s No 1 and one of his predecessors meet in the third round of the US Open. Hewitt dominated their matches back when the Australian was in the midst of winning two Grand Slam titles and Federer was still chasing his first Major championship. It’s hard to remember now that the Swiss has won 13 straight match-ups. The two set up another showdown by winning their secondround matches on Wednesday. Federer beat Germany’s Simon Greul 6-3 7-5 7-5 while Hewitt defeated Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3 6-3 6-4. “On any given day, a former world No 1, a guy who’s won Majors, is very, very dangerous,” Federer said. “That’s why I have to make sure I get into the match quickly, not give him the lead, because we know he’s not going to go down without a fight.” Hewitt won at Flushing Meadows in 2001. Three years later, Federer beat him in the final – the first of five straight titles that he’s seeking to turn into six. “He started his run here in 2004 in the final, so it would be nice if I could finish it,” Hewitt said with a smile. Roger Federer on his way to victory over Simon Greul at the US Open. the court like a guy with two healthy knees on Wednesday. He defeated Richard Gasquet 62 6-2 6-3 in his first Grand Slam action since May 31, when Nadal’s 31-match French Open winning streak ended in the fourth round at Roland Garros. Tendinitis in both knees sidelined Nadal for more than two months. He pulled out of Wimbledon instead of defending his title, saying he couldn’t play without thinking about the injury, but not anymore. “I don’t have pain, so I don’t think,” Nadal said. The defending women’s champion, Serena Williams, needed just 53 minutes to dispatch 51st-ranked Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-1 6-1.

ON ANY GIVEN DAY,A FORMER WORLD NO 1, A GUY WHO HAS WON MAJORS,IS VERY, VERY DANGEROUS. Roger Federer Her third-round opponent is Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who pushed Williams to three sets in a dramatic match at the same stage of the French Open.

Williams insisted the ball went off Martinez Sanchez’s arm on a point that helped the Spaniard win the first set; she later accused Martinez Sanchez of cheating. “She plays a fun game,” Williams said Wednesday. “She’s a tough cookie.” Venus Williams had heavy strapping on her left knee, which began bothering her when she struggled through a first-round win Monday. But like Nadal, Williams looked fine Wednesday, and she easily eliminated Bethanie MattekSands of the United States 6-4, 6-2. Kim Clijsters was away for two years, not two months, but she’s rolling, too.

oger Federer is not accustomed to taking second billing to anyone in tennis, but he settled for being a world-class warm-up act for Serena Williams yesterday (Bangkok time) at the US Open. US Tennis Association officials switched the typical order of US Open night matches and put Federer’s best-offive match against Germany’s Simon Greul on ahead of Williams’s best-of-three meetings with Hungary’s Melinda Czink. Defending champions Federer and Williams each won in straight sets to provide an expected early night for everyone in the first Arthur Ashe Stadium night test of putting the men ahead of the women. “We’re very happy from the men’s side,” Federer said. “It’s a cool thing to start off from day to night. I was the one who could do it so I’m very happy.” Federer made the case for the switch after years where certain matches went from nearly straight-set romps to early morning finishes thanks to a collapse from a men’s leader or an epic fightback from a valiant foe after losing two sets. “I think it’s fun to mix it up a little bit. It gets really late for us too sometimes,” Federer said. “I think it was great.” And Federer saw no problem in the break with tradition, playing the warm-up act for what proved to be a record night session crowd of 24,206. “I guess it is a bit like that,” Federer said. “It feels fine. This is more unique, more special.”

MAGICIAN SLAMS THE DOOR After 20 years of pro tennis and a record 69 Grand Slam appearances, "The Magician" is finally pulling a disappearing act. Fabrice Santoro ended the longest Slam run by any man with a loss.

LEAVE SAFINA

ALONE

Marat Safin questions a call during his match against Jurgen Melzer.

Marat Safin, relaxed about his impending retirement after a first-round loss at the US Open, had one final passionate Grand Slam message to deliver – quit picking on his little sister. Safin defended women’s world No 1 Dinara Safina on Wednesday, a day after she struggled past 18-year-old Australian Olivia Rogowska into the second round of the year’s final major tournament. “I have to protect my sister,” he said. “The poor girl, she’s trying her best. She’s doing really well. She gets the attention, but not the kind of attention that a person deserves, especially when you’re No 1 in the world.” Safina has yet to win a Grand Slam title but has ascended to the throne in the WTA rankings and will remain there after the US Open even if Serena Williams defends her title for her third Slam crown of the year. “Everybody is giving her hard time,” Safin said. “Why is she No 1? Is she a real No 1 or not? She made eight double faults, 43 unforced errors. She struggled, almost lost to an 18-year-old. “Who cares? I mean, she’s No 1 in the world. On this ranking, she’s No 1. Serena, even though she won two Grand Slams this year, she’s No 2. “Sorry, but that’s the way. Deal with that.” Acting every bit the big brother, 29-yearold Safin – six years older than Safina – made it clear he has had it with people diminishing 52-week ranking success in favour of twoweek Slam success. “They ask, ‘Are you really No 1 in the world?’ Yes, she’s really No 1 in the world. Go check on the ranking. She didn’t do the ranking,” Safin said. “Personally, I’m really like, I have to protect her. She deserves a little bit more than what she’s getting right now. You can’t imagine how crazy she is about sport. I don’t think there is one person in the world more professional than her.” Safin hit out at reporters for questioning Safina’s credentials.“Everybody is like hitting on her and giving her a hard time about this – what happened to this, what happened with that? Leave her alone,” Safin said. “Give her a little bit less questions. Make her happy.”
