The 42-rai neighbourhood in Phra Nakhon district is a showcase for King Rama IV and V’s plans to modernise 19th-century Siam with shophouses, fresh markets and trams.

The Culture Ministry will propose changes to the sevencategory film-rating symbols, including Arabic translations of numerals, Permanent Secretary for Culture Veera Rojpojanarat said yesterday. The proposal, which features ratings of Nor 13+, Nor 15+, Nor 18+ and Chor 20+ to make it easier to understand universally and places an X mark in front of each symbol, will soon be submitted to the National Committee for Film and Video, he said. Film and Video Classification Office director Pradit Prosil said more than 10 movies have been submitted under the new rating system and no complaints have been filed by film producers or cinema operators. He said the office will speed up plans for a public opinion poll asking if the films submitted were properly rated.

Quicker hip surgery The Police General Hospital, the first in Southeast Asia, has completed a sophisticated type of surgery to replace hip joints. Dr Wiroj Larbphaiboonphong, a senior orthopaedist, said the Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty, of the Birmingham type, has been successfully performed on 55 patients. This new computerised technology inflicts smaller wounds on patients. Patients who undergo the Birmingham-type surgery can go home within two days, compared to many days required by conventional surgery.

An expatriate professor was yesterday jailed for nine weeks for molesting two female students in his office at the University of Hong Kong. Terence Shortall, 54, an associate professor of education at the university, was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault. He was also fined HK$5,000 (Bt22,000). The professor’s first victim, a 21-year-old student, testified how Shortall touched her back and inner thigh when she went to his office for help with her studies when she faced being kicked off her course. Shortall kissed her then grabbed her hand and placed it on his groin. A second student said Shortall pressed her legs between his and tried to kiss her. Man who ‘smacked children 2,800 times’ goes on trial A man who is alleged to have smacked his children 2,800 times over a period of two years went on trial in Germany on Wednesday for deliberate corporal injury. Smacking children has been controversial round the world. New Zealanders voted by 90 per cent in a referendum last month to legalise “reasonable” slapping. Prosecutors said the man, 47, had punished his five children, aged 1 to 10, for “trivial” errors, mostly hitting them with the flat of his hand, but had sometimes used a stick. The troupe’s dance-theatre spectacle “Maha Janaka” toured Thailand and was presented in Prague, and earlier this year they premiered “Dear Death” in Singapore. Students form most of the cast, but professors and guest artists on the production team ensure that the quality of the productions is professional.

“Plueang” – a Thai musical i nspired by Terrence McNally’s stage adaptation of the British film “The Full Monty” – was originally staged a year ago at the Rangsit campus. Now it’s come downtown to M Theatre. The popular movie was also a big hit with “Plueang” playwright and director Pannasak “Khru Tu” Sukhee, an assistant professor at BU. “These six men are ordinary people, neither rich nor goodlooking,” he chuckles, “but they have to perform a strip show to prove their worth – not just as human beings, but as men, fathers and husbands. “I was thinking what if this actually happened in Thailand, where all kinds of people, including university graduates, are now losing their jobs.” Khru Tu not only transplants the characters and the locale from England to Bangkok’s Chimplee Alley, he ties the story to Buddhist teachings. “Buddhism suggests we plueang – strip off – what we use to cover our true self.” Among the cast changes this year, the lead character Chartchai, a university grad forced to drive a taxi, is portrayed by Sasit Suthikasem, a BU

Russians bang it back unattended from the shot glass, of course, or maybe with a splash of beer. Elsewhere, the modern trend is vodka with coke or juice, though there are no rules – it parties well with other spirits, like martini, brandy and liqueur. But yes, all right, if you need to neutralise the alcohol a bit, drop some pickled fruit in it, like olives. Keep the bottle in the freezer – except when you’re actually drinking from it, we mean – and remember that empty stomachs tend to react with alarm to quantities of vodka, so at least get a few slices of toast with caviar down the hole first.

Olympic boxing hero Worapoj Petchkhoom would be banned from the sport for three months for appearing in a gay magazine. Compared to the underwear ads featuring another Olympic champ, Somrak Khamsing, Worapoj’s images in the July edition of Stage were pretty meek. General Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of

Thailand, admitted at a press conference that the shots weren’t obscene, but he insisted that Worapoj (who says he’s straight) had tarnished the reputation of the national athletes.

IF THE SAME PICTURES HAD APPEARED IN A WOMEN’S MAGAZINE,THE PUBLIC WOULD BE CLAMOURING FOR MORE AND THE BOXING ASSOCIATION WOULD BE SMILING.

If the same pictures had appeared in a women’s magazine, the public would be clamouring for more and the Boxing Association would be smiling. The obvious subtext here is that anything associated with homosexuality is bad. In supposedly less tolerant Britain, David Beckham told BBC Radio he is “honoured” to be known as a gay icon. “I’m quite sure of my feminine side,” he told Sports Illustrated, “and I’ve not got a problem with that at all. These days it’s the norm, and it should be.” Attitude magazine’s current “Sex” issue has revealing photos of rugby player Nick Youngquest, not the first time he’s graced gay publications. With a dozen other players, he also appeared in the gay-targeted 2009 “Gods of Football” calendar, a fund-raiser for a breast-cancer charity. These straight sportsmen can do this without fear of hurting their career. What matters is how they perform on the field, not the macho image they need to uphold. The moral in all of this for gay Thais is clear: Don’t fantasise about national sports heroes, or even dream of becoming one. This will push Thai gay athletes deeper in the closet, and stop many younger gays from taking up sports seriously. Thailand may never know the likes of Australia’s Matthew Mitcham and, I guess, it doesn’t deserve to anyway.

Hull snap up Vennegoor Hull have recruited former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to bolster their bid to stay in the Premier League. The Italian football association announced on Tuesday that the Serie A match between Fiorentina and Parma would be held on November 21. Neither Fiorentina nor Parma have commented on the clash but a spokesman for the Italian Rugby Federation said all parties, which includes the city of Florence, which owns the stadium, were working on a solution. Trezeguet to leave Juve David Trezeguet plans to leave Juventus at the end of the season, the French striker announced yesterday. “Sooner or later there’s an end to everything. ngland striker Jermain Defoe has revealed the secret torment he went through watching his half-brother die at the age of just 26 and says it has inspired him to produce the best form of his life. Defoe, who has scored six goals already for Tottenham and England this season, is rapidly becoming a key player for his country and is a serious contender to partner Wayne Rooney as Fabio Capello’s side prepare for the World Cup. The 26-year-old hopes to play a part in England’s friendly against Slovenia tomorrow and the crucial qualifier against Croatia at Wembley four days later when victory would be enough to ensure the team reaches South Africa. But Defoe admitted his impressive form has been fired by personal tragedy. Just five months ago his halfbrother Jade, a talented rapper and DJ, died of head injuries in hospital after being attacked on the street in Leytonstone, east London. “I remember the day he died,” Defoe said. “I was training on the Friday before the Man United game and my mum turned up at the training ground. It’s hard to remember now that the Swiss has won 13 straight match-ups. The two set up another showdown by winning their secondround matches on Wednesday. Federer beat Germany’s Simon Greul 6-3 7-5 7-5 while Hewitt defeated Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3 6-3 6-4. “On any given day, a former world No 1, a guy who’s won Majors, is very, very dangerous,” Federer said. “That’s why I have to make sure I get into the match quickly, not give him the lead, because we know he’s not going to go down without a fight.” Hewitt won at Flushing Meadows in 2001. Marat Safin, relaxed about his impending retirement after a first-round loss at the US Open, had one final passionate Grand Slam message to deliver – quit picking on his little sister. Safin defended women’s world No 1 Dinara Safina on Wednesday, a day after she struggled past 18-year-old Australian Olivia Rogowska into the second round of the year’s final major tournament. “I have to protect my sister,” he said. “The poor girl, she’s trying her best. She’s doing really well.
