t’s great to win the Asian Championship for the first time for Thailand. For us, hard work eventually paid off. After our big win against China in the showdown to claim the title, e-mails have been pouring in from foreign clubs saying they want to hire the new Thai stars. It’s good news as it means we’ll get to earn more income for playing a game we love.

THAILAND SHOT DOWN TAT angry at new batch of travel shows they say tarnish country’s tourist industry By Suchat Sritama D A I LY X P R E S S
T
he Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is tackling a growing scandal surrounding a series of video clips they say damaged the country’s touristfriendly image. Chairman of TAT’s board Weerasak Kowsurat says a foreign video-production company hired locals to shoot eight short travel shows in Phuket, Samui, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and other popular destinations.
‘Sleazy and run-down’ Most featured information on how to get places and the sights
to see, but the TAT thinks the shows threaten tourism by portraying a sleazy and run-down image of destinations. Some of the clips have already gone out on cable in London and other European cities. Weerasak has asked three agencies to tackle the problem, with the Sport Ministry’s Office of Tourism Development commissioned to find out whether the production company had shooting rights and if they broke any laws in filming. Meanwhile, the Tourism Council of Thailand has been asked to urge tour operators at all major tourist destinations to improve
their quality of service to avoid similar incidents. The Foreign Ministry will provide clarification about issues brought up by the clips to the public in countries where the clips are being shown. In a related development, Phuket Jet Ski Operator Association chairman Anusorn Saleh said all operators would meet tomorrow to discuss how best to improve their service after a spate of complaints from customers. Asked whether he thought the adverse publicity from the travel shows had hurt his business, Anusorn said, “We haven’t seen much negative impact yet. But it’s low season, so there are few tourists around anyway”.
Bangkok Police searched a dormitory in Bang Khen district yesterday after student tenants complained to the Paveena Hongsakul Foundation that the landlord had violated their rights by installing security cameras in their rented rooms and toilets. Arriving at the four-storey commercial building-cumdormitory located in Soi Paholyothin 53, police searched room 119 on the ground floor and discovered cameras installed in the bedroom’s electricity box and in the toilet’s ceiling, with cables linked to the front office.
AV cables everywhere While photographing their finds as evidence, police noticed AV cables running to other parts of the building, provoking suspicions that cameras were installed in other rooms. With no evidence that actual recording of footage was taking place, police initially aimed to make an arrest for illegally breaking into a residence. But charges are pending further investigation and a detailed interrogation of the landlord. A source reported that the security cameras looked like they had been installed for a long time.

TV chef Keith Floyd dies after heart attack
AP
Keith Floyd, who died yesterday aged 65, was one of the UK’s first celebrity chefs, known for his charm and relaxed demeanor, as well as for enjoying a glass or two of wine while cooking. Floyd, who rose to fame in the 1980s with programmes such as ”Floyd on Food”, died of a heart attack at the Dorset home of his partner, Celia Martin. Four failed marriages, bankruptcy and a battle with alcohol did little to dent the Floyd’s popularity with fans. More recently, he opened a brasserie in Phuket. He was a pioneer in television and his programmes are still wonderful when you watch them today, the chef Rowley Leigh said in a telephone interview. They have that spontaneity that carried on into early Rick Stein but you dont see now. In a chequered career, Floyd was an army officer, a journalist, a dishwasher, a bartender, a cook, a restaurateur, with restaurants in France, Spain and Britain. He wrote at least 25 books, presented about 20 television series, which are still being shown in over 40 countries worldwide, and had recently toured the country with his award winning one-man show ”Floyd Uncorked”. He lived in Provence near Avignon. Tributes are expected to follow at his Phuket restaurant, Floyds Brasserie.

SWAYZE BOWS OUT A P , LOS ANGELES
P
atrick Swayze personified a particular kind of masculine grace both on and off screen, from his roles in films like “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” to the way he carried himself in his long fight with pancreatic cancer. Swayze died from the illness on Monday in Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 57. “Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” Annett Wolf said in a statement on Monday evening. When the actor first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was “considerably more optimistic”. “I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better

And that’s exactly what he did. In the September 2008 live television event “Stand Up to Cancer”, he pleaded: “I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, a life not lived in the shadow of cancer, but in the light. ... I dream that the word ‘cure’ will no longer be followed by the words ‘is impossible’.” Celebrities and fans inspired by Swayze’s struggle poured out their condolences. Demi Moore, who played Swayze’s fiancee in “Ghost”, wrote: “Patrick you are loved by so many and your light will forever shine in all of our lives.” A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the
He went on to earn three Golden Globe nominations, for “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost” and 1995’s “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar”, which allowed him to toy with his masculine image. Fear stalks Yale as slain student’s body found stuffed in lab basement Police suspect killing was an inside job; victim was to be wed on Sunday
C
lues increasingly pointed to an inside job Monday in the slaying of a Yale graduate student whose body was found stuffed inside a wall five days after she vanished from a heavily secured lab building accessible only to university employees. Police on Monday sought to calm fears on the Ivy League campus, saying the death of 24-year-old Annie Le was a targeted act but would not say why anyone would want to kill the young woman just days before she was to be married. “We’re not believing it’s a random act,” said officer Joe Avery, a police spokesman. No one else is in danger, he said, though he would not provide details other than to say that
police believe no other students were involved.
‘Could happen to anyone’ “I’m not walking at nights by myself anymore,” said student Natoya Peart, 21, of Jamaica. “It could happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.” Police found Le’s body about 5pm on Sunday, the day she was to marry Columbia University graduate student Jonathan Widawsky, lovingly referred to on her Facebook page as “my best friend”. The couple met as undergraduates at the University of Rochester and were eagerly awaiting their planned wedding on Long Island. Police have said Widawsky is not a suspect and helped detectives in their investigation. The body was found in the

K
anye West used Jay Leno’s prime-time television debut on Monday to offer another apology for ruining Taylor Swift’s night at the MTV Video Music Awards and to say he’s going to take some time off for reflection. West said he knew he was wrong the moment he handed the microphone back to Swift, when he was bathed in boos. He had interrupted Swift on Sunday night as she accepted a best female video award for “You Belong With Me,” arguing that Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” was more deserving. “It was rude, period,” West said. He posted a second apology to Swift on his blog on Monday, and told Leno he wanted to apologise to the country music star in person. “So many celebrities, they never take the time off,” he said. “I’ve never taken the time off to really – you know, just music after music and tour after tour. I’m just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else’s hurt … But I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyse how I’m going to make it through the rest of this life, how I’m going to improve.”
,, IT WAS RUDE,PERIOD. I’M JUST ASHAMED THAT MY HURT CAUSED SOMEONE ELSE’S HURT.
Le was part of a research team headed by her faculty adviser, Anton Bennett.
Captured on CCTV Campus officials have said that the security network recorded Le entering the building by swiping her ID
card about 10am Tuesday. She was never seen leaving. The death is the first killing at Yale since the unsolved December 1998 death of Yale student Suzanne Jovin. The popular 21-year-old senior was stabbed 17 times about five kilometres from campus.

he Thailand Entertainment Expo 2009 – touted by organisers as the largest platform for the Kingdom’s entertainment industry – gets under way today at Siam Paragon. This year’s event not only promises to be bigger and better than last year’s inaugural expo, but it also features another major draw. This year, the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Export Promotion is collaborating with the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (Kofice) to organise a Thai-Korea’s Friends concert featuring several South Korean artists. The line-up includes such favourites as SHINee, Kara, Ryan of the boy band Paran

SHINee, the R&B boy band featuring Lee “Onew” Jinki, Kim Jonghyun, Kim “Key” Kibum, Choi Minho and Lee Taemin, will introduce “Juliette”, a new single off their latest mini-album “Romeo”. Girl group Kara features Park Gyu Ri, aka Gyuri, Han Seung Yeon, aka Seungyeon, Jung Yong Joo, aka Nicole, Koo Ha Ra, aka Hara, and Kang Ji Young, aka Jiyoung. Their song “Honey” shot to the top of the M Net M Countdown chart show, beating out Girls’ Generation’s “Gee” for the No 1 spot. On July 28, the next single “Wanna” was released and immediately started climbing various music charts. Jaeng-E features a group of students from the Percussion Department of the National Music College at Joong-Ang University. They’ve globalised a new style of percussion by blending traditional beats with modern rhythms.
More than music Approximately 80 companies, agencies and organisations have booths at this year’s expo, which is expected to draw at least 200 visitors from overseas along with at least 15,000 locals. Its aim is to promote Thailand as a hub for the entertainment industry in Southeast Asia and stimulate investment in such sectors as film, music, broadcasting, animation and computer graphics, advertising and talent agencies.

rtist, songwriter and producer Bun Suwannochin has long been fascinated by the vintage sounds of old Thai classics. And it seems he’s not the only one. His latest effort, “Look Thung Hi Fi”, has come about as a result of his unexpected success with“Rak Yuk Hi Tech”, an upbeat version of “Ton Chabub Siang Waan” by 1960s singing sensation Sweetnuch. “It’s a by-product of Sweetnuch’s unexpectedly successful album and a song that’s topped the charts of radio stations that spin tunes for teens and young people,” he says. “Today, teenagers have become fans of the 67year-old singer, just like my mother-in-law and her friends.” Bun Suwannochin The successful album
rather than blending strings and songs-for-life like today’s artists,” Bun says. “Siang Khruan Khong Noom Thai” (“A Moan of Thai Boy”) is the first cut and it’s already very popular with its biting satire on Korean-crazy people. One line warning girls against becoming fascinated with Korean boy has caused much discussion – and dissatisfaction – in Internet chatrooms. “Why are you blaming people for being crazy about Korean boys?” asks one poster at Pantip.com. “Korea is in our minds but Thailand is in our veins,” reads another at Siamzone. com. “I think that most of those who post messages on the Net are in their teens,” says Bun. “The song just reflects my views on society today.” Bun adds that, in his view, the charm of retro look thung is “the live recording that’s hardly ever heard these days.”

Today’s Birthday: You’ll have plenty to deal with that will require hands-on applications. Don’t leave any room for error. You have a lot to gain from the changes you face this year. Don’t give false hope or be taken in by it when it comes to love. Be concise to avoid someone’s misinterpreting your intentions.
Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
ARIES *** March 21-April 19 Don’t point the finger or nag when an empathetic point of view will bring better results. The more understanding you are, the more knowledge you will receive for making a sound judgement. TAURUS ***** April 20-May 20 Make the effort to deal with people in person. You will get a much better response and more accomplished if you can offer your ideas and plans directly. Your preparation will lead to success. GEMINI ** May 21-June 20 Don’t do something stupid because you are all wrapped up in a personal matter. Separate your business and personal needs or mistakes will be made. Confusion is apparent. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 Someone will try to talk you into doing something you don’t want to do. A little aggression on your part will set the record straight. Good things are heading your way, so stay in control.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY
LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 You’ll have trouble controlling your emotions, especially when dealing with personal matters and relationships. There will be a fine line between buying and winning friendship. VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Not everything will be made available to you. You have to refrain from jumping into a situation too quickly. The more time you spend listening, the better off you will be. LIBRA **** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Asking for help may be daunting but, in doing so, you will connect with someone who can contribute something in return. Greater opportunities will be made available if you are willing to give back. SCORPIO ** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Don’t find out things the hard way. Dig deep and you’ll discover who is working with you and who isn’t. Don’t divulge your secrets or they will be used against you by someone you least expect. SAGITTARIUS ***** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 If you let an emotional matter distract you, you will lose sight of important matters. If someone wants to make changes, don’t fight him or her but, if it isn’t something you want to take part in, take a pass.

Someone will give you information that may cause you to make a costly mistake. Don’t act too fast. AQUARIUS *** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Your future will be influenced by the choices that are made by those close to you. Speak up and let your feelings be known. Love is in the picture and a relationship will open up some new options. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 If you are oblivious to what everyone around you is thinking and doing, you will not have a say in what’s going on. FA charges ‘violent’ Adebayor
Swiss firm buys BMW Sauber Formula One team BMW Sauber has been bought by Swiss firm Qadback Investments for around US$116.8 million. The agreement was signed yesterday and the team will continue to be based in Hiwil, Switzerland, with engines provided by Ferrari. There is no news whether BWM Sauber’s current drivers Nick Heidfeld of Germany or Robert Kubica from Poland will continue racing for the new team. – AFP
India win series in Sri Lanka A century from Sachin Tendulkar and five wickets from Harbhajan Singh helped India beat Sri Lanka by 46 runs to win the the tri-nation cricket championship in Monday’s final. Tendulkar scored 138 for his 44th limited-overs hundred and was supported by innings of 56 from Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh to lead India to 319-5. Sri Lanka started their chase well but succumbed to pressure as wickets fell at crucial times. “It feels good to win the match, of course it was close, but good to be on the winning side,” Dhoni said. – AP
8-4 The Tampa Bay Rays ended their 11-game losing streak, using a 15-hit attack to beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor was yesterday charged by the Football Association with violent and improper conduct over a challenge on former Arsenal teammate Robin van Persie and his provocative goal celebration. “Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised the FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge,” the FA said. – AFP

LOTUS BLOOMS FIA awards team spot on the 2010 Formula 1 grid AP, Putrajaya, Malaysia
L
otus are returning to Formula One racing. FIA, the sport’s governing body, yesterday awarded Lotus the 13th spot on the grid for the 2010 season. Lotus have been out of F1 since 1994. The team, initially based in Norfolk, England near the Lotus car factory, is funded by a partnership between the Malaysian government and a consortium of Malaysian businessmen. The team headquarters is expected to relocate to a purposebuilt facility at Sepang International Circuit, home of the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix for the last 11 years. FIA turned down an application from BMW Sauber, but said the team would be granted a spot in 2010 if a vacancy arises. FIA said it is consulting urgently with teams about a possible expansion to 14 teams and 28 cars for 2010. Lotus’ team principal will be
Tony Fernandes, owner of the Air Asia airline. The team technical director is Mike Gascoyne, who held the same role with Force India, Toyota, Renault and Jordan. Lotus has reached an engine supply deal with Cosworth. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak held a news conference yesterday to outline details of what was called the 1Malaysia F1 team. “The 1Malaysia F1 team is a government and private sector initiative combining the collaborative experience of Proton and Lotus, coupled with world class expertise,” a Malaysian government statement said ahead of the news conference. Najib said the team would integrate Malaysian technical and pit crew, with the future design, research and development, manufacturing and testing conducted near the Malaysian capital. The driving line-up is set to be announced by October 31 from a short list of six candidates. Najib refused to give investment costs or other details, but said the future design and testing would be conducted in
Malaysia, but declined to give investment costs. He said the venture would be a big boost to local automaker Proton, a government-owned company which has suffered in recent years because of increased competition from foreign car makers after the liberalisation of the auto market. “If we want to export Proton we need to establish our brand name so that it is accepted globally,” Najib said. “We are determined to do our best to make our mark in this arena.” The investors in the venture are Proton, budget airline AirAsia and Naza Motors, a local auto group. Najib said the creation of the team is a “natural progression” since Malaysia has hosted a leg of the F1 race since 1999 and national oil company Petronas has been a sponsor of BMW Sauber team for the last four years. Lotus competed in F1 from 1958-94, winning 79 Grand Prix races and seven constructors’ titles. Lotus had world champion drivers in Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi.

IBRA RISKS JEERS Striker braced for Inter ire as Barca begin CL defence AFP, Paris
efending champions Barcelona travel to Inter Milan in today’s stand-out Champions League fixture, with Barca’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic set for a swift reunion with the club he left in the summer. The Swedish striker’s switch to the Nou Camp was one of the sensations of the close-season transfer window, after Barca paid an eye-watering ¤46 million to secure his signature and threw Cameroonian forward Samuel Eto’o into the bargain as well. Both men have made goalscoring starts to life at their new clubs but Ibrahimovic provoked the ire of his former employers by suggesting that he was the main reason for the three Serie A crowns they won during his time at the San Siro. Inter’s Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari was quick to remind his former team-mate that there was more to Inter’s title successes than Ibrahimovic’s goals. “Ibra says Barcelona are stronger than Inter, but I think we are stronger than they are,” said Muntari. “Why? Because I play for Inter. One of those players who ran for Ibrahimovic, the man who thinks he won it all by himself.” Ibrahimovic, though, says he will not be perturbed by the reaction of the crowd – or his excolleagues – when he returns to his old stomping ground. “I’m not interested in how the crowd reacts, it is not important,” said the former Juventus

I had a good relationship with my team-mates and I’ll greet them with pleasure. I have nothing against them. After all, you don’t easily forget three Scudetti in three years.” With Barca and Inter set to fight it out for superiority in Group F, the pressure will be on Dynamo Kiev and Russian Champions League debutants Rubin Kazan to get off to a good start when they meet in the Ukrainian capital. matches, and manager Rafael Benitez says they must hit the ground running in Europe. “We lost our first game a couple of seasons ago – that caused us a lot of problems,” said the Spaniard. “We must be in control of the group straight away.” Lyon and Fiorentina will provide a strong challenge to Benitez’s side in Group E. The Tuscan outfit travel to France today and will be looking to avenge a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon in November 2008 that knocked them out of last season’s competition. Lyon themselves were eliminated at the quarter-finals by Barcelona but coach Claude Puel feels they’re well-placed to improve on that showing.
Arsenal forward Eduardo will be under the microscope in his side’s Champions League clash at Standard Liege today as he returns to European action after being granted a surprise reprieve by Uefa. Eduardo was due to miss Arsenal’s opening two matches in Europe’s elite club competition following his suspension for allegedly deceiving the referee to win a penalty in the Gunners’ qualifying-round victory over Celtic last month. But Arsenal appealed the decision and the Brazil-born Croatian discovered on Monday that Uefa had overturned the original verdict after reviewing video evidence, allowing Eduardo to join Arsene Wenger’s squad in Belgium. The 26-year-old admitted he was relieved to have cleared his name and immediately set his sights on making a positive impact today. “I’m very pleased that we have finally arrived at the truth. All we needed to do was to prove what happened and we have managed to do that. This decision makes me feel a lot better,” Eduardo said.“I just want to say that I’m a fair player. To score goals you must take your opportunities and I’m not the type of player who needs to be dishonest to score goals. “Now I just want to forget about this and think about our match against Standard Liege on Wednesday. “I was always prepared for the match in Belgium because I had a good feeling and I always remained positive about the outcome.” AFP

IT’S A HUGE BLOW I’ll get over it, Federer says of US Open loss AFP, New York
osing his US Open title and 41-match winning streak was a huge blow, but Roger Federer says he will spend no time in brooding over it. The Swiss star was finally beaten at Flushing Meadows for the first time in six years, going down 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 62 to an inspired Juan Martin del Potro. The player who is widely viewed as the greatest player of all time was clearly in low spirits at his post-match press conference, but he said he had more reasons to be happy than sad. “This one I think is easy to get over just because I’ve had the most amazing summer,” he said. “I tried everything, you know. Didn’t work. I missed chances. He played well and in the end it was a tough fifth set. It’s acceptable. But life goes on. No problem.” Federer’s comments reflected his magnificent run through the summer, during which he finally completed his career Grand Slam at the French Open and then took the all-time lead in Grand Slam titles to 15 with his win at Wimbledon. More joy came in late July when Federer and wife Mirka celebrated the start of a family with the birth of twin girls. “Unbelievable. Unbelievable run. Being in all major finals and winning two of those, and losing the other two in five sets. “Sure, I would have loved to win those two as well. Being so close, I think I was two points away from the match today.

Roger Federer reacts while playing against Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina during the final. “That’s the way it goes sometimes. “But the year has been amazing already and it’s not over yet. Got married and had kids, don’t know how much more I want.” Still, the manner of Federer’s defeat came as a surprise as, in contrast to the French Open where he struggled all the way, the Swiss star had looked imperious throughout the fortnight. The wins in Paris and London appeared to have lifted a weight off his shoulders and he was once again playing with the flair and panache that marked his game in 2006 and 2007, when he won three out of the four Grand Slam titles in each year. tion of Novak Djokovic and his loss to Juan Martin del Potro, a player seven years his junior, was hard to decipher for Federer. He said that his new responsibilities as a father and the travel complications of moving them and his wife over from Swizerland to North America for the hardcourt season had not posed a problem. Neither had Del Potro’s play been that different from previous meetings between the two although Federer did concede that the Argentinian was “rock solid”. But he did admit that he had finished the tournament and the year’s last Grand Slam in dire need of a good rest.
Serena Williams apologised on Monday for the abusive and threatening tirade she launched at a line judge in a semi-final loss to eventual champion Kim Clijsters at the US Open. But the 11-time Grand Slam champion’s actions, which have already brought fines of US$10,500, remain under investigation by the Grand Slam Committee and could result in greater fines or suspension from future Grand Slam events. “I really wanted to apologise sincerely,” Williams said. “I think the lady was doing the best she could. She was just trying to do her job. “I would like to give her a big old hug and put it behind us.” Williams called Saturday’s outburst and the controversy that has swirled around it a humbling experience. “It definitely is,” Williams said. “If it wasn’t I don’t think I could learn from the past.” One day after issuing a statement in which she admitted she “let my passion and emotion get the best of me” and “handled the situation poorly” but did not apologise for the incident, Williams released an apology. “I want to sincerely apologise first to the lineswoman, Kim Clijsters, the US Tennis Association and mostly tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst,” the statement said in part. “I handled myself inappropriately and it’s not the way to act – win or lose, good call or bad call in any sport, in any manner. We all learn from experiences both good and bad. I will learn and grow from this.” - A F P
atriots quarterback Tom Brady, back in the National Football League spotlight, came up with a characteristically big finale. Brady threw two touchdown passes in the final 2min 06sec as the Patriots handed Buffalo a heartbreaking 25-24 defeat yesterday. It was a thriller of a return for Brady, who missed the 2008
season after tearing knee ligaments in the season-opener. Under pressure through much of the game, Brady rarely looked like the record-breaking quarterback who piloted New England to an undefeated 2007 regular season. But when Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin fumbled a kickoff return after the Patriots had narrowed the deficit to five points, Brady rose to the occasion.
Patriots placekicker Stephen Gostkowski recovered the ball at the Buffalo 31 yard line. Three plays later, Brady connected with Benjamin Watson over the middle for the decisive 16-yard touchdown with 50 seconds remaining. Little more than a minute earlier he had hit Watson for an 18yard TD. “Two-minute drives always are fun for a quarterback,” Brady said.

THESPORT Roger Federer, owner of the most Grand Slam titles in history and maybe the best player of all time, finally lost at the US Open. But not to Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick or even Andy Murray. Rather, it was sixth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, the 6-foot-6 Argentine with the big serve and the bigger forehand, who did the deed – a 36 7-6 (5) 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-2 upset victory on Monday in his first Grand Slam final. “It’s difficult to explain this moment,” del Potro said. Inexplicable. That’s another way to describe the loss of the top-ranked Federer, who was two points away from victory in the fourth set in a windy Arthur Ashe Stadium but couldn’t get his serve to click and had no answer for del Potro’s forehand. Thus ended a streak of 40 straight wins for Federer at Flushing Meadows and the quest to become the first person to win six straight titles at America’s Grand Slam since Bill Tilden in the 1920s. “Five was great. Four was great, too,” Federer said. “Six would have been a dream, too. Can’t have them all.” Federer beat everyone who got thrown at him in his five straight US Open final victories: Roddick, Murray, Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Novak Djokovic. Big hitters, finesse players, youngsters, veterans. Everyone. Until he met up with the lanky player from Argentina, nine days away from his 21st birthday. “When I would have a dream, it was to win the US Open, and the other one is to be like Roger,” del Potro said. “One is done.” Del Potro had 37 forehand winners. And with the forehand working so well, del Potro saw no need to ramp up his powerful serve. Instead, he simply spun it in, got himself into a rally, then waited for his chance to strike. Federer, meanwhile, couldn’t get his first serve on track. He got only 50 per cent into play after averaging about 66 per cent through his first six matches. That gave him few easy points, and as the strain built up, it became more than just physical. A staunch critic of the review system used in tennis, he lashed out at the chair umpire during a changeover for allowing del Potro to challenge a call well after the point was over. “Don’t tell me to be quiet, OK? When I want to talk, I talk. I don’t give a ... what he said,” Federer said in a profanity-punctuated exchange.
