HELP yourself to some happiness Thousands with cancer find hope in the unique holistic care at a temple in Sakon Nakhon – but volunteers are desperately needed By Wannapa Phetdee D A I LY X P R E S S
here’s no such thing as a hopeless case at Wat Khampramong’s Arokhayasarn home. Over the past few years, more than 1,600 people with cancer have benefited from the unique cocktail of holistic care at this temple in Sakon Nakhon province. As an antidote to the cold and clinical atmosphere of a hospital, families of patients are encouraged to take part in the daily routine here. Alongside modern Western-style treatments, residents and their visitors can partake of traditional Thai and Chinese herbal therapies as well as meditation, prayer, acupuncture, breathing exercises, special diets and music therapy. Founded in 2005 by a monk, Phra Ajarn Paponpatchara Jiradhammo (or “Luang Ta”), the home provides free care but is always in need of volunteers to help run the place. “Medical qualifications or even knowledge of patients’ needs are not necessary. If you simply want to help, please come,” says its founder.
Skills not required “There are lots of things to do aside from treating patients. We need skilled people to repair our electrical tools, for example. If you don’t have specific skills, you can help with daily duties like collecting rubbish, mowing the grass, boiling up herbs, cooking and seeing to the needs of patients.” The big-hearted monk has announced a project to encourage more people to work as volunteers at the home for a few years. “Unfortunately, less than 10 per cent of all volunteers are adults; more than 90 per cent are university students who are still in fulltime education. They often feel that, as they are not doctors or nurses, they are not qualified to help the patients in any way.” What he would like to see is more adults volunteering to work at the home. “Volunteers find the happiness they give to patients by easing their suffering rebounds to the giver. Selfish concerns decrease as they learn the truth of life from patients. And as they realise the real value of life, volunteers’ spirits tend to be lifted. Those high spirits are then passed on to the patients.” The project, dubbed “Let’s volunteer for just a day a year (or more)”, is look-

Mamas and Papas singer accused of rape by daughter
‘Sick with drugs’ “My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father. “Had this happened before? I didn’t know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it.” John Phillips died in 2001 aged 65 after a long career as frontman for The Mamas and the Papas, best known during their 1960s incarnation for singles such as California Dreamin’ and Monday Monday. Mackenzie Phillips’s halfsister Chynna Phillips told US Magazine that she believed her sibling’s allegations. Chynna said her sister had confessed the incestuous relationship to her in 1997. “Somebody could have dropped a piano on my head and I probably wouldn’t have felt it,” she said. – A F P
US actor John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston leave the court in Nassau, Bahamas, on Wednesday after he testified against two people accused of trying to blackmail him. AP
The troubled daughter of The Mamas and The Papas singer John Phillips said on Wednesday her late father raped her as a teen before the two later had a consensual incestuous relationhip. Mackenzie Phillips, 49, a former child star with a history of drug abuse, made the claims in a memoir High on Arrival and repeated the allegations on Oprah Winfrey’s television show. In her book Phillips, best known for her roles in the 1973 film “American Graffiti” and sitcom “One Day at a Time”, recalled how she first had sex with her father on the eve of her wedding in 1979. "On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it,” Phillips writes. “I had tonnes of pills, and Dad had tonnes of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.
Travolta recounts son’s death at Bahamas trial Actor is a star witness in a court case against two people accused of trying to extort $25 million from him A P , Nassau, Bahamas
J
ohn Travolta said on Wednesday he tried desperately to save the life of his seizure-prone son and made perhaps his first public description of the boy as autistic as he testified in the trial of two people accused of trying to blackmail him. With his wife Kelly Preston looking on inside the Nassau courtroom, Travolta said that he performed CPR on his son after a nanny alerted him that the teen had fallen ill at a fami-
ly vacation home on Grand Bahama island. Jett Travolta later died from a seizure. “I ran downstairs with my wife to help my son,” Travolta said.
We’re innocent: accused Travolta is the star witness at the trial of two people – paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamian senator Pleasant Bridgewater – who are accused of trying to extort US$25 million (Bt840 million) from the movie star. Both de-
fendants pleaded innocent to extortion charges at the trial that began on Monday in the island chain off the Florida coast. Travolta testified that he and Preston were awakened by a nanny around 10.15am on January 2, the day of Jett’s death. Travolta said when he went downstairs, another caretaker was doing chest compressions and he began administering breathing help. Travolta also said – apparently for the first time in public – that 16-year-old Jett was autistic, confirming speculation that had swirled for years. The developmental disorder is frequently accompanied by seizures.
Boy was ‘autistic’ “He was autistic. He suffered from a seizure disorder,” Travolta told the jury when asked about his son’s condition. The actor said Jett suffered seizures every five to 10 days. He said the seizures would last 45 seconds to a minute and Jett typically slept for 12 hours after each one. The judge dismissed Travolta on Wednesday but said he would be called back later for further testimony. Travolta, 55, has kept a low profile since Jett’s death. He skipped promotional events this summer for his latest film, “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3”.

hree skydivers claim to have made the highest parachute landing ever at a drop zone high in the Himalayas of Nepal. The feat comes only one year after the previous world record was set in the same area when Nepal first started allowing skydiving in the high altitudes around Mount Everest. British nationals Leo Dickinson, 62, and Ralph Mitchell, 24, and Indian Ramesh Tripathi, 45, jumped from 6,100 metres on Tuesday and landed on Gorakshep, a frozen lake bed, at 5,164 metres near Mount Everest, said Surendra Sapkota, chief of Nepal’s mountaineering department. The previous world record landing was also in the shadow of Mount Everest at a drop zone at 3,764 metres. Sapkota said officials from his department, police and the home ministry escorted the skydivers to the area and witnessed the jump. They were still trying to confirm whether it was the highest landing on record.

T
he former boyfriend of late model Anna Nicole Smith was hit with five more charges stemming from the late centrefold’s 2007 death. Howard K Stern pleaded not guilty to four counts of obtaining fraudulent prescriptions and one count of administering a controlled substance to an addict. Stern and two doctors – Sandeep Kapoor and psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich – had already denied earlier charges of funnelling drugs to Smith, who died in February 2007 from an accidental overdose aged 39. Prosecutors say Stern, Kapoor and psychiatrist Eroshevich “repeatedly and ex-
cessively” provided Smith with prescription drugs prior to her death. Stern’s lawyer Steve Sadow on Wednesday decried the charges against his client, insisting he had been “concerned over Anna Nicole’s health and safety” throughout their relationship.
‘It makes no sense’ “They’re throwing something against the wall and hoping that it sticks – it makes no sense at all,” Sadow said. According to affidavits and search warrants unsealed in Los Angeles this week, pharmacists had raised the alarm about the drugs sought on Smith’s behalf by Kapoor and Eroshevich.
A fugitive wearing slippers who managed to escape Hong Kong police after a movie-style car chase was on the run yesterday. In scenes reminiscent of an action film, the man drove at speeds of more than 100 kilometres per hour on Wednesday night, circling roundabouts several times and ramming a car and mini-bus that blocked his way. He also jumped a red light and reversed his car into a police car five times in a bid to evade capture as he led police on a 16km chase along highways. The chase came to an end after the driver lost control of the car and knocked down three bollards in a street. He then jumped out of the car and fled on foot. It was at this point that it was noticed he was wearing slippers. – DPA
Pay up or else... Here’s another of the Mafia’s trademark offers-you-can’trefuse: pay or be eaten by a crocodile. Italy’s anti-Mafia police unit has seized a crocodile used by an alleged Naples mob boss to intimidate local businessmen from whom he demanded protection money. Officers searching for weapons in the man’s home outside the southern Italian city
last week found the crocodile living on his terrace. The crocodile, weighing 40 kg and 1.7 metres long, was fed a diet of live rabbits and mice, police official Sergio Di Mauro said. He said the suspect, an alleged boss in the Naplesbased Camorra crime syndicate, used to invite extortion victims to his home and threaten to set the animal on them if they didn’t pay or grant him favours. The man was not arrested but placed under investigation for illegal possession of an animal, Di Mauro said. Investigators are also working on extortion charges against him. – AP
Toddler shot Police say a two-year-old northern California girl is dead after her eight-year-old brother accidentally shot her. Police say the boy was playing with the gun at the family home in Vacaville when it discharged, shooting the toddler in the head, according to The Reporter newspaper. The girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Vacaville police Lieutenant Craig Courtemanche says the children’s parents were home at the time of the shooting. Both the parents and the boy were being questioned, with investigators hoping to determine how the boy got his hands on the weapon. – AP

Shadow puppets, contemporary dance and multimedia mix to create a ‘Carmen’ like never before By Pawit Mahasarinand S P E C I A L T O D A I LY XPRESS

t’s been 12 days since we saw our last production of “Carmen”. Time for another helping! The appetiser, an extraordinary version from Ukraine that lifted more from Merimee’s novel than Bizet’s opera, is followed this weekend and next by a rendition from a new veteran-filled troupe called 12 Inch. This “Carmen”, a co-production with Alliance Francaise de Bangkok, promises an even more exciting concept than the Kiev production. Imagine nang talung – the shadow puppets of southern Thailand – performing French opera. Director Kriengsak “Victor” Silakong, who’s also artistic director of the World Film Festival of Bangkok, loves intercultural experimentation. His last production was the 2007
likay version of Marivaux’s “The Island of Slaves”, and was a great success. Victor says “Carmen” has been close to his heart ever since he translated it from French to Thai when he was a student at Cours Florent. A Yala native himself, he’s added a character to the story for this presentation – I Teng,
the most famous clown in nang talung. “He steps in again and again, making remarks, misinterpreting things and contradicting himself, in the southern Thai dialect,” Victor says.
Can’t settle down This “Carmen” – with Meuanphun Ampunsang as Carmen, Yuko Nakamura as Michaela and Kampanath Ruangkittivilas as I Teng – also features video, contemporary Western dance and Rapeeporn
Pratum-Anon singing opera, accompanied by Weeraphong Thaweesak. “We shouldn’t find something we’re comfortable with and then just settle down until we die,” insists Victor’s co-director and choreographer, Jitti Chompee, acclaimed for “Remember What You’ve Done in 24 Hours” and “In Tune”. “We should be able to keep searching for what we are and what we want to say.” We know the story and we know the music. Caster’s ordeal changes the rules Banning the ‘intersex’ runner because natural gave her extra male hormones would be like barring tall women from basketball

Ole, and cheers!

A Fighting bulls is supposed to be the height of machismo, so this is one advertising spot that’s bound to raise eyebrows.
Citizen caning The government of Indonesia’s Aceh province has declined to adopt the shariah bylaw that sees adulterers stoned to death and homosexuals whipped, says the Jakarta Post. Lower-level authorities, however, can punish homosexuals with 100 lashes of the whip, a fine of a kilogram of gold or 100 months in prison.
tersex person. Regardless of social belief in a clear line between the sexes, nature doesn’t observe such divisions, and sometimes produce individuals who are between male and female – often regarding their genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics, but sometimes it can involve only chromosome and hormonal levels. According to the report, Semenya has three times the usual level of the male hormone testosterone. If that’s
s our Olympic hero Worapoj Petchkhoom is slapped with a three-month ban for posing innocently in a gay magazine, the ongoing case of South Africa’s Caster Semenya provides a glimpse of the future of sports in which human rights and dignity are respected. After winning the 800-metre gold in Berlin’s 2009 World Championship in Athletics, the 18-year-old runner Semenya had to undergo both blood and chromosome tests as well as a gynaecological exam to prove she’s really a woman. Semenya is lucky to have the support of her family and country, being given the red-carpet treatment, all the way to meeting Caster Semenya the president. The South African government has filed a complaint with the United Nations over how Semenya’s case was handled. An unofficial report now claims that Semenya is an in-
true, the question is whether it’s okay for her to compete with “unfair advantage” over other female athletes. The same can be asked about maleto-female transgenders. This isn’t the first time an intersex person won an international event. Stella Walsh won the gold medal for 100 metres in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and silver in the 1936 Berlin Games – in the same stadium where Semenya triumphed. It was only when Stella died in 1980 that her autopsy revealed that she was intersex, having male genitalia – although displaying some female characteristics – and both male and female chromosomes. Gender testing began in international sports in 1966, but in 2000 the International Olympic Committee (IOC), influenced partly by Stella’s case, suspended the tests, absent “valid suspicions”, in a decision arguing that genetic gender was not necessarily equal to biological or social gender. Little-known Spanish matador Joselito Ortega has broken with a tradition by agreeing to have the name of the energy drink Gay Up embroidered on his cape in big script.
Should we not allow a tall woman to compete in basketball because she has an advantage over shorter women? The obvious answer is no and, by this reasoning, it would be wrong to bar intersex or transgender women from competing. Gone are the days when male athletes from the Eastern Bloc competed in female disguise. Such blatant deception can now be easily detected with a simple mouth swab and, if doubts remain, further investigation regarding the gender roles they actually live their daily lives can be easily made in today’s borderless world. That’s why the only way to go – like the 2003 IOC rule changes to allow transgenders in the Olympics – is to permit all people, across the whole spectrum of gender diversity, to participate in the gender with which they identify. From now on, the rule of the game should be non-discrimination and respect of human dignity, regardless of sexual or gender differences.

Today’s Birthday: Get involved with people and things that have meaning for you. Let the old, outdated and impossible people and pastimes go. This is a time to reach your own goals. Accomplishing your goals will lead to peace of mind. If you feel good about who and where you are in life, you will do well in the future.

Hamilton backs Piquet for return World champion Lewis Hamilton believes the disgraced Nelson Piquet junior could return to Formula One despite his part in the Singapore race-fix scandal, but other drivers are not so sure. “He’s a good driver and he’s had a great career, so who knows?”, Hamilton said of his old rival in the GP2 Series, the traditional Formula One feeder championship. “For sure, there are opportunities for him in the future and I can only wish him the best.” – AFP
New boys fire Inter Milan top Inter Milan brushed aside the absence of manager Jose Mourinho to climb to the top of Serie A on the strength of a 3-1 success over Napoli . Samuel Eto’o put aside his financial dispute with former club Barcelona to open the scoring in the third minute and his new strike partner, Diego Milito, doubled up two minutes later. Another Inter newboy, Brazil World Cup winning defender Lucio made it 3-0 just after the half hour mark.
3-2 AJ Burnett struck out 11 as the New York Yankees won a series at Anaheim for the first time since 2004.

West Indies’ little-known paceman Gavin Tonge grabbed four wickets, but failed to stop Pakistan from posting a five-wicket victory in the Champions Trophy on Wednesday. Pakistan were reeling at 61-4 following Tonge’s incisive opening spell, but teenager Umar Akmal helped his side achieve a 134-run target with a responsible 41 not out in the day-night match on a lively track. Tonge finished with 4-25 off 10 overs in only his third onedayer. – AFP

A REAL CLOSE CALL Thankful Lam leads Panasonic Open in Japan AFP, Kyoto, Japan
L
am Chih Bing grabbed the joint lead after the first round of the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open yesterday, days after a freak golfing accident which he at first feared may have blinded him. The Singaporean fired a fiveunder-par 66 at Joyo Country Club but admitted later he had been lucky to even be playing after countryman Mardan Mamat accidentally hit him in the face with a driver during
Monday’s practice round. Lam was struck near his right eye as Mardan, who didn’t realise the 32-year-old was in his way, took a practice swing. Doctors did not stitch the gash because it was too near the eye but Lam was thankful his sunglasses had reduced the full impact of the club. “I was standing on the first tee box waiting to tee off and the next thing I was lying on the ground thinking if it’s the end of my golf career,” Lam said. “Thank God when I removed my hands from my right eye, I was praying that I could still see.” “I’m just very happy that I got
to tee off today and it’s an even bigger bonus that I played good,” added Lam, whose score was matched by Japan’s unheralded Tetsuya Haraguchi. There were high expectations of teen prodigy Ryo Ishikawa of Japan but he struggled home with a 73. Instead, it took another 18year-old to hog some of the limelight as South Korea’s Noh Seung-Yul, 2008’s Asian Tour rookie of the year, fired a 67. He shares third with three Japanese – Tomohiro Kondo, Yuji Igarashi and Katsumasa Miyamoto – at the US$1.5-million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.

GB and Ireland strike early blows in Vivendi AFP,Saint-Nom-La-Breteche
G
reat Britain and Ireland made a strong start to the 2009 Vivendi Trophy yesterday, despite going into the biennial team event as slight underdogs. At 1345 local time on the tournament’s opening day, Paul McGinley’s side were ahead in four of the five four-ball
matches out on the course. A birdie from Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell on the first hole put him and compatriot Rory McIlroy one-up against Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen and Alvaro Quiros of Spain and they were two-up after nine holes. Europe’s strongest pairing of
Swedes Henrik Stenson, the world No 5, and 2008 European Order of Merit winner Robert Karlsson, were three-down against English duo Anthony Wall and Chris Wood. Wall and Wood are both making their debuts in this event, which was formerly known as the Seve Trophy, but Wall stead-
ied their nerves with an eightfoot birdie putt on the first before Wood birdied the second and their opponents could only produce a bogey at the parfour third. English pair Simon Dyson and Oliver Wilson were twoup against Denmark’s Soren Hansen and Sweden’s Peter Hanson.

Joe Cole returns for Chelsea
OH BOY, DANNY! Sizzling strike sets up possible family reunion for Fergie AFP, Manchester, England
anchester United coach Alex Ferguson is praying for one outcome when the draw is made for the last 16 of the League Cup tomorrow – a tie against son Darren and his Championship club Peterborough. Ferguson junior reached the fourth round of the competition with victory over Newcastle on Tuesday, 24 hours before a 1-0 win for the ten men of United earned his father’s League Cup holders their spot in the fourth round. The two managers have never competed against each other in a competitive contest and, while the odds are obviously stacked against that particular outcome, Ferguson is clearly relishing another extended run in a tournament he has used so successfully to blood young players over the years. “Peterborough at home,” replied Sir Alex when asked whom he wanted to meet. “All the family will be happy with that! But blooding the young players is the only thing we can do. Give them the experience of playing at Old Trafford in front of 50,000. It’s a good crowd and it’s a good tournament for young players. “The quality of not knowing when you are beaten is a quality this club has. You have to have it. The young players have come in and responded. They’ve accepted the challenge and enjoyed it.” One of those young players, Danny Welbeck, scored the decisive goal for United on

Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck scores past Wolverhampton goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann. Wednesday after a 66th minute exchange of passes with Michael Owen. Unfortunately for United, Welbeck’s teenage team-mate Fabio Da Silva, endured a less successful evening as the Brazilian defender was shown a straight red card before the half-hour for a professional foul on Michael Kightly. Ferguson has been an unashamed admirer of Welbeck, even talking of the 19year-old Mancunian as a candidate for next year’s England World Cup squad. “The goal was fantastic. I think it was difficult for him because of the way we had to play when we went down to ten men,” said Ferguson.
...A MAGNIFICENT ONE-TWO WITH MICHAEL OWEN,A GREAT RETURN AND A MAGNIFICENT FINISH. Alex Ferguson on Welbeck’s goal against Wolverhampton
“But the goal told you about the boy’s quality. It was a magnificent one-two with Michael Owen, a great return and a magnificent finish. He has earned his plaudits.” Welbeck took those plaudits in his stride, as Ferguson’s emerging players are supposed to do, and confessed he was disappointed with his display. “I didn’t know Sir Alex had said that about England, but it doesn’t drive me on,” said Welbeck. “It’s a great plus to hear it.” Fabio’s experience was altogether less satisfying although his manager, initially and contrary to everyone else at Old Trafford, believed referee Peter Walton had been hasty in dismissing him.
Joe Cole insists he still has some way to go before he is back to his best after completing his first 90 minutes since damaging knee ligaments last January. Cole’s performance was one of the highlights of a pedestrian Chelsea display as the Premier League leaders struggled to overcome Championship club QPR Rangers, eventually edging to a 1-0 victory in the League Cup third round clash at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The England midfielder was crocked in an FA Cup tie against Southend nine months ago and he knows he has to keep working to reach a high enough level to press for a regular starting spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s first team – as well as pressing for a recall to Fabio Capello’s England squad. “This is a stepping stone for me,” he said. “It’s not a case of saying I’m back or anything like that. “This is just another step and I will keep working hard and get back to the top of my game and beyond as soon as I can. “You have to get the knee used to all the movement and all the twisting and turning which is a big part of my game.” League Cup results 3rd round: Aston Villa 1 (Agbonlahor 3) Cardiff 0; Chelsea 1 (Kalou 52) QPR 0; Hull 0 Everton 4 (Yakubu 11, Jo 20, Gosling 24, Osman 57); Man City 2 (Barry 52, Toure 111) Fulham 1 (Gera 34) aet; Man Utd 1 (Welbeck 66) Wolves 0; Preston 1 (Brown 83) Tottenham 5 (Crouch 14, 77, 90, Defoe 37, Keane 87)

Kaka celebrates with Ronaldo after opening his account.
eal Madrid kept pace with champions Barcelona at the top of the Spanish First Division defeating 10-man Villarreal 2-0 at El Madrigal on Wednesday with Cristiano Ronaldo continuing his goal-a-game record while Brazilian Kaka scored his first Real goal from the penalty spot. Ronaldo scored a great solo goal in the very first minute to
make it five goals in four games and Kaka converted a controversial penalty for his first goal in Real’s colours. “It was important to start [the season] winning games,” said Ronaldo. “I am really happy to win here and also to continue scoring goals. “Villarreal are strong at home but we managed to get the three points.” It was a fourth straight win
for Real as they joined Barcelona, who defeated Racing Santander 4-1 on Tuesday, on a maximum 12 points. It was a special win for Real coach Manuel Pellegrini – who spent five successful seasons at Villarreal – and also captain Raul who came on as a substitute to equal Manolo Sanchis’s league appearance record of 504 games. It was a great day for Real but
new Villarreal coach Ernesto Valverde is feeling the heat as he searches for his first win in charge after two draws and two losses. “The sending off changed the match and I don’t think the handball [for the penalty] was intentional but the referee decided otherwise,” bemoaned Valverde. Ronaldo has so far not had any problems living up to his world record fee.

FORMULA ONE
THE DRIVING FORCE? Crash was Piquet’s idea, says Symonds AP, London
F
ormer Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr has been accused of instigating the plot to deliberately crash his car during a race by ex-team official Pat Symonds, according to documents released by Formula One’s governing body. Symonds quit as Renault’s engineering executive director and Flavio Briatore as their team principal last week amid allegations by Piquet that he was ordered to drive his car into a wall at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix to help team-mate Fernando Alonso win. However, Symonds wrote a letter to the World Motor Sports Council for its hearing into the incident in Paris on Monday claiming that
Flavio Briatore was ‘personally and directly involved in the conspiracy’. Piquet came up with the plan. “I was the one who, when the idea was first suggested to me by Nelson Piquet Jr, should have dismissed it immediately,” Symonds said. “It is to my eternal regret and shame that I did not do so. I can only say that I did it out of a misguided devotion to my team, and not for any personal gain whatsoever.”
The WMSC said in its findings that it had received differing accounts of who suggested the idea but ruled it “immaterial” as the breaches “arise from the execution of the crash plan itself”. Alonso had already made his pit stop ahead of the rest of the field when Piquet’s crash brought out the safety car. That
allowed Alonso to move up the field when the other cars had to later refuel. Piquet, the son of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, was fired by Renault in July. He spoke to the hearing after being given immunity by FIA. Briatore was banned indefinitely from any F1 activities and Symonds was suspended for five years. The WMSC also said Briatore was directly involved despite his claims in a written letter that he had no knowledge of the scam. “In the light of the overwhelming evidence, the WMSC cannot accept the account that Mr Briatore has offered,” the ruling said. “The evidence strongly indicates that Mr Briatore was personally and directly involved in the planning of the conspiracy.” The documents also reveal that a mystery witness, referred to as Witness X, also knew of the plot but was not part of it.

Briatore ban too harsh, says Ecclestone Formula One ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone said yesterday the lifetime ban meted out to Renault team principal Flavio Briatore was too harsh. But he also made clear his friend should have owned up before the hearing this week into Nelson Piquet junior’s deliberate crash at the Singapore Grand Prix last year. “There were three people who knew what was going on and that is it. No one else was involved,” the sport’s powerful commercial rights holder said at public relations function here, autosport.com reported. “Those people have been dealt with – in my view quite harshly in [regards to] Flavio. I don’t think it was necessary, but I was on the commission so I am probably just as guilty as anyone else. On reflection it wasn’t necessary.” He added: “It was too much. Definitely too much.” AFP
