HM in good condition His Majesty the King is in good condition in general, can eat more and is undergoing physical rehabilitation and receiving medication, the eighth Royal Household Bureau statement said yesterday. His Majesty will continue to receive medication until the course is complete, said the statement. Meanwhile, a large number of well-wishers have been signing messages wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery at Siriraj Hospital, where he is being treated. Among them is a sailboat crewman who participated in a regional sporting event in 1967 and worked closely with His Majesty in a series of competitions, which later saw the Monarch winning a gold medal on December 16 that year after racing in a ship he built. During the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games (SEAP Games), MR Somchanok Kridakorn, now 79, said he witnessed His Majesty’s expertise in designing and building a sailing ship himself. Somchanok, a retired Army lt-general, was impressed with the King’s success in building a ship according to design – all with his bare hands and at a time when there was no computerised assistance. His Majesty won gold in the “OK Series”, sailing a ship he built and named – “Mod” [Ant]. Somchanok said the name Ant was given because fibreglass powder used in moulding the ship irritated the skin, like an ant bite. D A I LY X P R E S S

he world has 16,402 Rayong residents to thank for their dedication in volunteering for the globe’s largest HIV vaccine trial conducted in Thailand six years ago. “This is our ray of hope: to keep younger generations from contracting HIV. That’s why I decided to join the trial,” says 32-year-old gardener Aree Khamphonrat, after hearing that the trial result shows it is now possible to produce a powerful prevention against the viral killer. The result was announced by the Public Health Ministry on Thursday. The Phase III vaccine study was launched in 2003 and involved 16,402 non-infected volunteers aged between 18 and 30, the age group at average risk of contracting HIV. Half of them received the prime-boost vaccine combination and the other half received a placebo.

Modest results The

trial’s

result

THE FINAL RESULT SHOWS THAT THE EXPERIMENTAL VACCINE IS 31.2% EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING THE RISK OF INFECTION. shows that the experimental vaccine is 31.2-per-cent effective in reducing the risk of infection. It failed to reduce or kill the HIV virus in the blood of infected persons. The result, though modest, is a light at the end of the tunnel for scientists around the world.

6 vaccinations in 3 years Aree received six vaccinations in the past three years. She socialised like any other normal person, and occasionally went to a healthcare cen-

tre for a routine check. “I was excited when the healthcare staff told us about the blood-test results,” she said. Aree was reported to be in good health and there were no signs of any chronic illness. “They told me to use a condom when I had sex, but during the trial I had no sex and my test result was negative.”

No worries Even though there were reports of two volunteers dying, she said she did not worry about the adverse side effects of the vaccine. Thirty-three-year-old freelance worker Tanad Yommaha also had no fears of being a volunteer as he thought the project would be useful to the rest of the world. “[During the trial] I went about life like any other normal person because I believed that the vaccine was safe enough to prevent me from becoming infected with HIV,” he said. Aree and Tanad do not know whether they received the vaccine or a placebo. They are waiting for their individual results, which are to come in next month.

A not so itsy-bitsy spider bugs the pope President Barack Obama had his fly. Now Pope Benedict XVI has his spider. A large arachnid appeared on the pope’s white robes as he addressed politicians and diplomats in Prague on Saturday. The pope didn’t seem to notice as the spider inched toward his neck. It disappeared from view for a moment, but then could be seen crawling up the right side of the 82-year-old pontiff’s face. When it reached his ear, Benedict gave it a swat. But it didn’t go away – it reappeared on his left shoulder and scampered down his robe. As the pope left the medieval Prague Castle’s ornate Spanish Hall, the spider could be seen hanging from a piece of web. In June, Obama famously swatted and killed a fly that intruded on an interview for CNBC at the White House. AP

‘GUARDIAN ANGEL’

DELIVERS A BOY Biological parents of baby born to a woman implanted with wrong embryo will be ‘eternally grateful’ to her A P , Toledo, Ohio

A

woman who gave birth to a baby boy after a fertility clinic implanted her with the wrong embryo is a “guardian angel”, the boy’s biological parents said.

‘Difficult journey’ Paul and Shannon Morell of Detroit said in a statement that they would be “eternally grateful” to Carolyn Savage, of Sylvania, for her decision to give birth to their child despite the clinic’s mistake. “It’s been a long, difficult journey, and we’re thrilled that our family is now complete,”

the Morells said. “We will be eternally grateful for his guardian angel, Carolyn Savage, and the support of the entire Savage family. “We’re looking forward to spending the next few weeks getting to know our new baby.” The boy was born on Thursday at 2.2 kilograms at St Vincent Mercy Medical Centre in Toledo. He measures 45 centimetres long. In a statement the next day, the Savages offered congratulations to the Morells. The Savages also extended thanks to people around the world for their support and prayers.

The Savages say a fertility clinic outside Ohio transferred the wrong frozen embryo in February. Ten days later, they got a call from a doctor at the clinic saying she was pregnant with someone else’s child. The Savages said they never considered terminating the pregnancy or trying to fight for custody.

Attorneys hired They have hired attorneys who say they are working to make sure the fertility clinic accepts responsibility. The Morells and the Savages knew nothing about each other. Shannon Morell feared that the pregnant woman would choose abortion, ending their chance to give their two-yearold twin girls a sibling.

Conan O’Brien is expected to be back on the job today after hitting his head during a Tonight Show stunt. The accident on Friday halted production of Tonight, NBC said. The network did not say what the stunt entailed. O’Brien was examined at a hospital on Friday and was released, although the network did not say when. A Tonight rerun with guest Jeremy Piven aired on Friday. According to NBC’s website, the scheduled show was supposed to include “Desperate Housewives” actress Teri Hatcher and Seth McFarlane (“Family Guy”). Actress Drew Barrymore and jockey Joe Talamo are the scheduled guests for today. – AP

Robbers blow themselves up Two would-be bank robbers were killed when they used too much dynamite to crack open a cash machine, blowing themselves up and demolishing half the bank in a Belgian town. Police found the victims – one bearing Kosovo identification papers – amid the rubble of the bank in the town of Dinant, 90 km southeast of Brussels. The police were called to the Record Bank at 3.20 in the morning after residents were startled by the huge blast that wrecked a large section of the building. They found one of the would-be robbers immediately. He died shortly after from head injuries. The second was not found until Saturday afternoon when firemen had cleared much of the rubble. – DPA

he debate about skinny models resurfaced at the London Fashion Week when a stylist was forced to deny she stormed out of a show because the designer was using largerthan-normal models. Erika Kurihara told The Guardian newspaper that she left the show by up-and-coming knitwear designer Mark Fast because they “did not have the right walk for the catwalk” – but said she had no problem with larger women. Jackson fans camp out for tickets to star’s film A F P , Los Angeles

M

ichael Jackson devotees have been camping for days in downtown Los Angeles to get tickets for the debut of a film about the fallen pop star rehearsing for a concert tour derailed by his death. By Saturday morning about 300 people were ensconced in a queue in front of the Nokia Theatre, where commemorative tickets for debut showings of “This Is It” went on sale the first minute of yesterday. About 3,000 tickets went on sale for the behind-the-scenes concert film’s October 27th debut in Los Angeles. “We didn’t sleep, we stayed up all night,” said Leticia Martin, who had staked out a spot near the front of the queue. The 26-year-old medical technician spent the night learning dance moves to Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” song from costumed zombies that entertained those waiting in line. Some fans snuggled in sleeping bags on the concrete, while others napped in folding chairs. “We’re like one big family,” Martin said. Theatre operators expecting a crowd had used metal barriers to cordon off eight rows, three of which were empty leaving plenty of dancing room for a group reminiscent of a small tribe of pop music refugees.

ABOUT 3,000 TICKETS WENT ON SALE FOR DEBUT SHOWINGS OF ‘THIS IS IT’, A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT WHAT WAS TO BE JACKSON’S COMEBACK CONCERT IN LONDON. Jackson fans were eager to get their hands on some of the first 500 movie tickets, which the film’s promoters said will commemorate “This Is It” concerts Jackson had planned in London. For some waiting here, getting a Jackson-designed piece of pop music history like the tickets was worth missing work and sleep for. But fans in the queue expressed surprise that excitement surrounding the pending film release had thus far not matched the huge outpouring of emotion that followed Jackson’s death on June 25th at the age of 50.

She said: “Two of the bigger girls, although their faces were beautiful and their bodies beautiful, did not have the right walk for the catwalk. The walk is very important, and I wasn’t happy. “Mark was very upset that I didn’t share his vision, as he saw it, so he asked me to leave.” Fast was unavailable for comment but the Canadian designer’s managing director, Amanda May, told The Daily Telegraph newspaper that there were “creative differences with regards to the casting of those girls”. “There was a team change

and we’re glad we stuck to our vision,” she said, adding: “There’s this idea that only thin and slender women are able to wear Mark’s dresses and he wanted to combat that.” Fast had been working with one of the models, Hayley Morley, a British size 12 (European size 40, US size 10), as part of a photo exhibition showcasing some of the best of design talent on different sized women aged 17 to 65. Sarah Watkinson, director of 12+ UK Model Management, which provided the three models for Fast’s show, welcomed their inclusion. The fashion industry has been criticised for using “size zero” models – those who fit a US size zero – particularly after the deaths of two South American women who had suffered from eating disorders. A British report on the health of models in 2007 resulted in a ban on girls under 16 taking part in London Fashion Week.

Blurring visions A new exhibition blends Chinese landscape painting with digital photography D A I LY X P R E S S

C

hinese artists Lu Jun and Feng Fangyu construct digital landscapes using the visual elements of tradition in “Landscape Architecture”, which is showing at La Lanta Fine Art. Lu Jun’s work transcends the categories of painting and photography. His body of work takes its cue from Chinese traditional landscape painting. He patiently observes the movement of ink in water. The natural ebbs and flows of the ink is captured with a camera, then combined digitally to create scenes that resemble a traditional landscape painting. Through this process, the ink becomes the subject rather than the medium. In his series “May Rain”, Feng Fangyu’s mise-en-scene style of photography reflects his concern at how the

tourism industry is outpacing the conservation measures at Suzhou’s traditional gardens and Kun Opera, both cultural treasures listed by Unesco. In response, the artist has created a series that serves as a collection of love letters to his hometown, photographing more than 10 traditional gardens over the course of a year and inviting the participation of professional opera singers. Ironically, the focus and desire for perfection has resulted in works that expose man’s impotence to exert control over circumstances. The work titled “Misguided” shows the protagonist on a rooftop as strong winds buffet him. It’s difficult to say whether he’s standing in defiance or wonderment of the mischievous forces.

A chip off the old Chuan Former prime minister Chuan Leekpai knows plenty about stuff, but his son Surabot, known as “Pluem”, seems to have drifted outside his sphere of knowledge. Pluem’s love life has been generating some decent gossip lately, beautiful Pluem girls falling like leaves, so reporters quizzed the old man. What about MR Mannarumas “Yingmann” Yukol? “Is that the mother or the daughter?” Chuan needed to know. “You don’t hear many old-fashioned names these days.” He didn’t mean it as a joke, but everyone was laughing. Well then, what about Ploy the Gig? Never heard of her. Told that Ploy is a teen film star, Chuan first ascertained that Ploy is female. “Well it’s good that he’s seeing a woman!”

We could, but … That gung-ho expression “Yes

Shoaib Malik smashed a brisk century to set up Pakistan’s 54run victory over arch-rivals India in the Champions Trophy on Saturday. The middle-order batsman hit 128 for his seventh hundred in one-dayers as Pakistan posted a challenging 302-9 before restricting India to 248 in a pressure match to boost their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals. P

aradorn Srichaphan, yesterday, was quite hopeful of his injured wrist holding up to the rigours of tennis after some practice sessions in preparation for the US$608,500 PTT Thailand Open. Testing his game with fellow players Danai Udomchoke and Sonchat Ratiwatana, the former top 10 star showed that he still possess the big serves and heavy strokes. The positive outcome will give him plenty of confidence when he plays his first match in two and a half years. He and Danai, who were given wildcards, were pitted against Michael Kohlmann of Germany and Austrian Alexander Peya. “This is the first time I seriously hit the balls and I didn’t feel the pain. But I was really tired. My game is still there but I need to work more on the breathing rhythm and running shots,’’ said the two-time

Thailand Open semi-finalist. Paradorn last played in an ATP match in March 2007 before going out of action because of tendinitis on the right wrist. He underwent two surgeries but never fully recovered. People started questioning his commitment and doubted whether he would ever make a comeback. Retirement looked a possibility when he started a restaurant and launched an adult diet supplementary for men. Last Thursday, however, he announced his comeback. “I am not a quitter. I never quit. I still can play tennis and do some business which is something I plan to do after I retire. “I chose this tournament to test myself and I realised that I have to work harder on my fitness if I want to make a full return,’’ said the 30-year-old Paradorn, who has not decided on a tournament to make his singles comeback. Danai and Sonchat said Paradorn is capable of competing in the singles if he practices seriously and regain his fitness. “He has been out of action for too long. But he can be very

competitive if he is really fit,’’ Danai said. With no Thais surviving from the qualifying competition, fans will pin their hopes on the Ratiwatana twins and young Kittipong Wachiramanowong when the trio take centre stage in today’s main draw. Sonchat and Sanchai will play German Benjamin Becker and Argentine Leonardo Mayer in the doubles at 2pm while Kittipong faces big gun John Isner at 7pm in the singles. The other singles first round main draw match is between Brazilian Thomaz Belucci and Guillermo Garcia Lopez of Spain.

After 10 days, the aggregate points of each participating reader will be counted. The two readers with the highest points will win the Bt45,500 Longines Sport Collection Conquest (lady) and the Bt38,500 Longines Sport Collection HydroConquest (gentleman) respectively. Question: Apart from Paradorn Srichaphan, who was the other Asian player with the best singles result in the Thailand Open history? Longines, Tennis Tradition and Elegance United supported by Longines Longines is making its mark on the world of tennis, a sport that shares many of the values of the watchmaking brand, such as tradition and elegance. As a team, Liverpool have scored 22 times in seven games, their best opening to a campaign since 1895, although the demanding Benitez believes Torres, still only 23, is only scratching the surface of his ability. “I think he can do better,” said Benitez. “The last three games he has played well and was improving his mentality, his work rate. But the main thing is his mentality. “When I talk about Fernando I say that he is keen to learn, that’s the main thing. That means he will improve, how much he improves is down to him. “When you think about the money we were spending when we signed him, 20 million pounds was a massive figure for us. But we thought it was a really good figure and the main reason we decided to bring him here was his quality, his age, his potential and the future he has. “We had confidence he would get better and we’re really pleased now. But he can improve.” Hull showed spirit in the first half, Geovanni equalising

Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, right, scores against Hull City during the English Premier League match at Anfield. Torres’ first goal, before the visitors capitulated and conceded twice more to Torres before Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel, who scored twice, piled on the misery. “For me, it was demoralising,” said furious Hull manager Phil Brown. “I hope it was for the players as well. I was disgusted at some of the defending, individually, collectively. “To throw away the third goal as easily as we did was disgusting. It killed us off and killed any spirit we had shown in the first half because one or two towels went in after that. “It’s going to be uncomfortable for one or two of them this week, myself included. There is a little bit of pain flying around

THE LAST THREE GAMES HE HAS PLAYED WELL AND WAS IMPROVING HIS MENTALITY,HIS WORK RATE. Rafa Benitez at the moment and it’s all com-

ing my way. I think the players should show more pride in the shirt and their performance.” Liverpool, meanwhile, now start preparations for a midweek Champions League game at Fiorentina and Sunday’s visit to Chelsea, a game that takes on added significance after the London club surprisingly lost at Wigan on Saturday. And, with 22 league goals under their belts this season, Liverpool suddenly look capable of mounting a title challenge. Benitez, certainly, expects the championship race to be far more open in 2010. Benitez said: “The top side will lose games and I think you will see the top side losing more games this season than last.”

Carlo Ancelotti has promised Chelsea will provide a response when they travel to Apoel Nicosia after suffering their first defeat under the Italian. The Blues head to Nicosia for Champions League duty on Wednesday hoping to make up for a miserable 3-1 defeat at Wigan on Saturday. It was the first time they have been beaten since March and the first time they had lost since former AC Milan coach Ancelotti took over at Stamford Bridge in the close-season. The concern for the Italian is that Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel could both miss the Champions League match after sustaining injuries at the DW Stadium. Cole picked up a knee injury that forced him to be carried off while midfielder Mikel suffered an ankle problem. Ancelotti is also facing up to the fact that Henrique Hilario will have to fill in for Petr Cech against Liverpool next Sunday, after the Czech goalkeeper was sent off in the defeat to the Latics. But while Ancelotti wants to see more from his team in Nicosia, he expects to fight United all the way in the title race. He said: “I think that there will be a lot of competition until the end of the season. “I don’t know why we lost at Wigan because we prepared very well and we knew what was important. “This can happen after a lot of victories and we have to accept this loss and fix it.”

lex Ferguson paid tribute to Ryan Giggs for the inspiration he provided in the 2-0 defeat of Stoke which sent Manchester United to the Premier League summit for the first time this season. United manager Ferguson believes Welsh midfielder Giggs will play a crucial role in the champions’ attempt to retain the English title this season af-

ter another decisive display in Saturday’s win at the Britannia Stadium. Giggs already has 11 Premier League winners medals to his collection, but the 35-year-old showed he is still razor-sharp in body and mind as he produced a 20-minute period of mayhem, after replacing Portuguese international Nani, that secured a seventh straight victory for United in

all competitions. He will be 36 in November and benefited from being given some rest after his excursions in the Manchester derby last Sunday, before emerging to set up goals for Dimitar Berbatov and John O’Shea, on the Irish international’s 350th appearance for the club. “Ryan is just so important to us as a player and he is so intelligent,” Ferguson said. “It was

marvellous movement from Ryan for the first goal and an excellent ball to Dimitar. “He had had a difficult game the previous weekend, because he used up so much energy and put so much into his performance. “I thought it was best to have him on the substitutes bench, but he just gives us something else when he is in the team.” Ferguson said.

MAXIMUM CLUBS Five from five for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Ibra A F P , Madrid

B

arcelona joined Real Madrid on a maximum 15 points at the Spanish League summit with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring for the fifth consecutive game as the champions won 2-0 at Malaga on Saturday. Ibrahimovic started on the substitutes bench after turning his ankle but came on for the injured Thierry Henry in the 28th minute and needed just 11 minutes to net the opener. The Swede is now the only player to score in every game notching five goals, one behind Valencia’s David Villa in the goal-scoring charts. “He [Ibrahimovic] is a key figure in this team and we can play a bit more direct if we need to,” said Barcelona’s

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema after scoring against Tenerife. Brazilian star Dani Alves. “He can help us a lot with his goals and overall quality.” Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in Real’s 3-0 home win over promoted Tenerife earlier on Saturday that maintained their perfect start and they sit marginally above Barcelona on goal difference. Europe is the next port of

call for both teams with Barcelona facing Dinamo Kiev in the Champions League tomorrow while Real take on Marseille 24 hours later. Barcelona had crushed Racing Santander 4-1 in midweek – scoring three times inside the first 26 minutes – but found Malaga tough going so Ibrahimovic’s goal six minutes

before the break was a real relief. Real coach Manuel Pellegrini paid tribute to substitutes Guti and Kaka for turning the game in Real’s favour. “It was a poor first half and the changes helped us in the second half,” said Pellegrini. “Guti took control in our half and Kaka did it in our opponents’ half of the pitch.” “We will lose at some stage but we know what direction we are heading in and the squad looks good.” It was a historic day for Real captain Raul, now 32, as he became the club’s all-time leading league appearance holder notching his 505th game to beat the previous record of Manolo Sanchis. It was also a special day for brothers Xabi Alonso and Mikel Alonso, who faced each other in an intriguing midfield battle. Portuguese centre-back Pepe returned for Real.

TAKING A SHOT Perry races past Woods in Tour Championship A P , Atlanta

K

enny Perry birdied his opening four holes as he made 6-under 64 to overtake and lead Tiger Woods by two shots going into the final round of the US Tour Championship on Saturday. Winning the $10 million for the FedEx Cup remains a long shot for Perry but he gave himself a shot at his third victory this year at East Lake. “Four birdies in a row puts you in a good mood is all I can say,” said Perry, who was at 8under 202. “That set the tone for the day.” Woods had a 12-foot birdie putt on the first hole that slid by the cup, and that set the tone for his day. He missed a half-dozen chances from 15 feet or under, yet his only significant birdies

Kenny Perry celebrates after a birdie on the 17th hole. came on putts of 20 and 55 feet. The other was a two-putt on a par 5. He wound up with a 69, his eighth consecutive round in the 60s during the FedEx Cup play-offs, yet this one cost him the lead. “I got fooled a few times there,” Woods said, confused by the slope and grain on the greens. Perry will be in the

final pairing with Woods, and even though he has a two-shot lead, he is approaching it as though he has nothing to lose and even playfully challenged the world’s No 1 player. “Here I am at 49, I’m still trying to beat him,” Perry said. “I have fun with it. He’d better bring his ‘A’ game is all I’ve got to say.”

For Perry to win the FedEx Cup, he would need a victory and for Woods to finish in a three-way tie for third or worse. That remains a possibility, given the players stacked up behind them. Phil Mickelson continued to ooze confidence with his putter and shot a 4-under 66, suddenly believing he can make any putt whether it’s from 4 feet or 40 feet. He was at 4-under 206 along with Sean O’Hair (70), who was tied with Woods until pulling a tee shot into the water on the 17th to make double bogey. Padraig Harrington, playing with Woods for the ninth time this year, stopping making birdies to offset his mistakes and shot a 71, leaving him at 207 with Steve Marino (67). Steve Stricker, the No 2 seed in the FedEx Cup standings behind Woods, got back into the picture, no matter how blurry, with a 66 and was six shots out of the lead.

Poosawat knocks out Irish fighter Poosawat Kratingdaenggym marked his first overseas fight in fabulous style, knocking out Bernard Dunne of Ireland to snatch the World Boxing Association super bantamweight title. The Thai challenger stunned the partisan crowd at the O2 Arena in Dublin by condemning the Irish to second loss of his career and ending the reign which lasted only six months. Dunne entered the fight as the favourite against the Sakon Nakhon native. However, the Thai lived up to his word that he would knock the champion out. Surprisingly, it came earlier than he had expected as the fight ended in the third round. The 28-yearold managed to floor the home fighter three times, each with a powerful left hook. He improved his record to 39 wins and one loss. DAILY XPRESS
