eigo Zato, the nineyear-old Thai-Japanese boy whose search for his father made headlines in May, shed tears of joy yesterday after learning that his absent dad, Katzumi Zato, would be travelling to visit him this week. Following his mother’s death, Keigo roamed Phra Aram Luang Temple in Muang Phichit each day, showing his father’s picture to Japanese tourists in the hope one of them would recognise him.
Flying in from Japan Yesterday, teacher Chaichana Sriwicha, who acted as interpreter during a phone call between the boy and his father on Sunday, said Katzumi told his son he would arrive in Bangkok from Japan on Friday and stay for five days. Katzumi also asked Keigo what he wanted to be when he grew up. Hearing Keigo’s answer – “a doctor” – his father encouraged him to follow that dream and study hard. A tearful Keigo told reporters he was overjoyed to learn his dad would be arriving in Phichit in just a few days. He said he would go to greet him at the airport and ask his aunt to teach him how to make papaya salad as a welcoming treat. DAILY

A legend returns Petchara Chaowarat steps back into the limelight after three decades for a TV appearance tomorrow By Achara Pongvutitham D A I LY X P R E S S

ll eyes will be on Petchara Chaowarat tomorrow when the veteran star makes her return to TV screens as honorary presenter for the Mistine cosmetics brand. After blindness seemingly ended her career more than 30 years ago, the “actress with the puppy-dog eyes” is making her comeback with a Bt70-million campaign for the “Diamond” lipstick collection.
Stage fright “It is not easy for a famous actress to return to the limelight after so long. She told us she’s worried about being ig-
nored because her looks have changed so much,” said Danai Derojanawong, managing director of Better Way, which owns the Mistine brand. Petchara says the comeback will be a one-off to help her charity work for the blind. Her decision was made easier when the company agreed to give a percentage of the lipstick’s sales revenue to the Thailand Association for the Blind.
A special goodbye Danai said that as this will be the last time we see Petchara on our screens, the company has created something special to remember her by. “We want to bring down the curtain on

Last year they spent Bt100 million on “To Be Number 1”, which tagged a drug-prevention message onto the launch of a limited-edition lipstick in a campaign that starred Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya. In addition to her TV cam-
paign, an exhibition based on the 20 things Petchara most values in life is running at CentralWorld shopping complex in Bangkok. Tomorrow will be the first time viewers see Petchara’s face since she gave up appearing in public three decades ago. Confirming that she is still an extraordinary beauty, makeup artist Apichart Norsetthaporn says it will be the highlight of his career to work with such a screen legend.

Director’s arrest could be his path to freedom Roman Polanski’s arrest could elevate his case into an international ordeal – involving the governments of Switzerland, France, Poland and the United States – and potentially complicate his possible extradition. Nevertheless, some believe the arrest of the 76year-old Academy Award winner could lead to a resolution that will allow him to once again travel freely. “I think he will finally get his day in court,” defence attorney Steve Cron said, “and there’s a good chance his case will be dismissed or the sentence will be commuted to time served.” Meanwhile, Poland and France are making a joint appeal to Switzerland and the United States to have Polanski released from his detention, said Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski. Sikorski said he and his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner also plan to ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to offer Polanski clemency. “The good news for him is he’s been living under a cloud all these years wondering who would swoop in and arrest him,” Cron said. “Now he can get this thing finally worked out.” – A P

EXTRADITION Swiss Justice Ministry awaiting US request to fly out Polanski, wanted for sexual intercourse with a minor A F P , Zurich
R
oman Polanski’s lawyers vowed to fight his extradition to the United States after he was arrested in Switzerland over a 1977 child sex case in Los Angeles.
Pleaded guilty The 76-year-old PolishFrench director, who pleaded guilty three decades ago to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, has been held since late Saturday, when he arrived in Switzerland to receive a life-
time achievement award at the Zurich film festival. US authorities have been pursuing the controversial director of “Rosemary’s Baby”, “Chinatown” and “The Pianist” for many years. The Swiss Justice Ministry said it was now waiting for a US extradition request.
Demand to free him “We will be demanding that he be freed. Then we will fight the extradition,” his lawyer Herve Temine told France’s Le Figaro daily.
“Humanly, it seems to me unbearable that more than 30 years after the incident a man of 76 who poses no danger to society and whose artistic and personal reputation are clearly established, should spend a single day in prison,” he said.
16-year-old Australian has dismissed calls for her to abandon an attempt to become the youngest sailor ever to undertake a solo journey around the world. Jessica Watson said on her website she would not be deterred by a September 9 collision that damaged her boat and forced her back to port. Watson’s 10.4-metre yacht was dismasted when in the dead of night it hit a 63,000-tonne coal carrier on the way to Sydney to start the eight-month voyage.
Youngest to attempt voyage “Jessica Watson and her team wish to advise all of her supporters that she remains on track to achieve her goal of being the youngest to sail solo around the world,” a posting on her website said. “The team is now undergoing final preparations on Ella’s Pink Lady on the Gold Coast, with Jessica planning to sail to Sydney later [this] week.” Watson has refused to say whether she was asleep below decks when her fibreglass boat was battered and almost sunk by the Chinese ship near Brisbane.
Family shocked Polanski fled the United States in 1978 before sentencing on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. He admitted the charge at the time and has never returned, even missing the Oscar award for “The Pianist” in 2003. “His wife and his children were very shocked by the arrest,” Temine told Le Figaro.
She probably ‘dozed off’ Maritime Safety inspectors, in a report leaked to Brisbane’s Courier Mail, concluded that Watson “most probably dozed off before her vessel was hit”. They also said she “could not produce a clear, plotted plan for her journey”.

he Goethe Institut continues to spice up contemporary dance in the region, showing us new possibilities of what can be considered dance. Besides the upcoming website TanzConnexions, it’s hosting a visit by experimental dancer Xavier Le Roy of Berlin, whose intellectual concepts are more important than physical technique. At the institute’s headquarters in Jakarta next Saturday, Le Roy will stage the lecture-performance “Product of Circumstances”, exploring notions of self and paradoxes in art and science. He has a PhD in molecular and cellular science.
At Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre Studio on October 16, Le Roy will conduct the audience as a symphony orchestra in “Le Sacre du Printemps”, with the help of nifty acoustics and the Berlin Philharmonic’s recording of Stravinsky classic. Finally, on October 20, Le Roy will make his much-awaited Bangkok debut with his signature work “SelfUnfinished”. Born in France, he’ll be co-hosted here by the Alliance Francaise.
Le Roy will present ‘Self-Unifinished’ at the Alliance Francaise.
Little chicken wings In an all-white space with just a table and chair and no music, Le Roy will tackle the dance dilemma of “to have” or “to be” a body. “The main section of the piece relates to the unsettling shapes that the body can form,” the Observer noted when it was staged in London earlier this year. “Imagine a naked man halfway through a somersault, so that his head is invisible and his back is facing you,
topped by his buttocks, which in the case of Le Roy are narrow and bony, like a frog’s. The result is a phallic column of flesh, apparently supported by
spindly little chicken-wing legs.” Dancers and choreographers can sign up for Le Roy’s workshop the next morning.

Bardot makes birthday plea
PHOTO EXHIBITION
RECLUSIVE FORMER “sex kitten” Brigitte Bardot marked her 75th birthday yesterday with another call to Italian screen goddess Sophia Loren, who turned 75 on September 20, to give up fur once and for all. “I wish a happy birthday to Sophia Loren, my splendid twin, and I ask her to stop wearing fur – that is the best gift she could offer me.” In the mid-1990s, the actress-turned-animalrights activist wrote to Loren over ads in which she modelled fur coats, accusing her of “wearing a cemeBardot tery on your back”. The Italian actress never responded. A Paris exhibition, “Brigitte Bardot: The Carefree Years”, opens today and runs until January 31 at the Espace Landowski with some 2,000 photos, films and mementos spanning BB’s life and times from her teens to her retirement in 1973. – AFP

‘City of Life and Death’wins CHINESE DIRECTOR Lu Chuan’s account of the Japanese occupation of Nanjing in 1937, “City of Life and Death”, won the top award at Spain’s San Sebastian International Film Festival, which wrapped up over the weekend. A Spanish actor with Down’s Syndrome, Pablo Pineda, picked up the best-actor prize for his role in “Yo, Tambien” (“Me Too”), which also picked up best-actress honours for Lola Duenas. The best director prize went to Spain’s Javier Rebollo for “La Mujer Sin Piano” (“Woman Without Piano”) while the four writers of the Australian film “Blessed” took the best screenplay award. “City of Life and Death” also won for best cinematography. The film deals in gruesome detail with the killing of what China says were 300,000 defenceless civilians and prisoners of war by Japanese invaders. But it has angered some Chinese ultra-nationalists, earning Lu at least one death threat, because of its portrayal of the Japanese soldiers as ordinary people caught up in the tragedy of war, rather than blood-thirsty monsters as they are often depicted in China. – AFP

Kirkland will present his iconic Hollywood portraits, which include Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Nicole Kirkland Kidman and Angelina Jolie, at 6 at the Chatrium Suites. The 15-minute-presentation features a live performance by De Cirque and Erika Lemay. Kirkland started his career at Look and Life magazines in the 1960s. He’s worked on the set of more than 100 movies including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, “2001: A Space
Odyssey”, “Out of Africa” and “Titanic”. His books include “Light Years”, “Legends”, “Body Stories”, “An Evening With Marilyn” and “Coco Chanel, Three Weeks” published last autumn. He has received numerous awards, among them a Lucie for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography in 2003 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Capic in Toronto in May 2006. Among his exhibitions is “Freeze Frame”, which is in the permanent collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In September of 2008, Vanity Fair Italy organised a retrospective of his work at the Museum of the Triennale in Milan. When he is not travelling on assignment with his wife and business partner Francoise, he’s at his home and studio in the Hollywood Hills.
managing director at the GMM indie record label Sanam Luang, get the nickname “Pa Ted”? Originally it was just “Ted”. Does it refer to his seniority, his music expertise, because he warrants heavy-duty respect like Gen Prem “Pa Prem” Pa Ted Tinsulanonda? You’d think that after almost two decades in the music biz – as DJ, founder of Fat radio and now at Sanam Luang – Pa Ted would have spilled the beans. Finally, all was revealed when he appeared on the Channel 9 show “Idol”. “When I first joined A-Time Media I loved drinking yoghurt,” he explained. “Whenever the [vendor] came into the office I felt uncomfortable being the only one ordering any, so I always asked if anyone else wanted some, and then I treated everybody. Eventually they started calling me Pa Ted.”

oudoir styles, once a trademark of Italian fashion, are back for spring/summer 2010. But rather than the sex pot numbers, which brought out the best in designers such as Dolce&Gabbana and Gianni Versace, this round the look is demure and yesteryear. Corset tops worn over a jeans bubble skirt, panties peeping out of a pair of short shorts and bra tops veiled in silk chiffon all combine to create a romantic rather than raunchy mood. Culottes are pulled out of Grandma’s trousseau to become contemporary shorts, worn over loose silk tops. There is also an enticing lightness and unfinished touch to these collections, with profuse use of chiffon and gauze, and shredded fabric as if cut but not stitched. Layering is a big part of next summer’s fashion and designers often team lingerie items with shirts, vests, dusters or the latest coverall – the chiffon apron.
Dolce&Gabbana fetching lace, crochet and floral printed silk. The transparent effect of lace is used on jackets, dresses, skirts and even shoes and bags. A three-piece tuxedo with cropped jacket and jodhpur pants serves as a reminder that
you don’t have to take your clothes off to be sexy.

light gauze for protection. Everything from the old-fashioned bras and panties to bubble skirts, shorts and even the high-heeled shoes is covered in a thin veil, lending an ethereal effect to the new spring/summer collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Many of the outfits have a frayed look, with unfinished seaming and off-white or black colours, which add to the “once upon a time” feel of the clothes. And yet the collection is also ultra modern with a brand new shirtwaist made up of shorts and a shirttail back, leather worked to look softer than fabric and the latest Fendi bag with its exchangeable surfaces.
MARNI Marni makes dressing up look easy. From the layered styles held together by a striped knitted belt with matching striped leggings to the upbeat flowers, checks and polka dots of the prints, Marni’s latest collection presented in Milan is all about a laid-back summer 2010. The outfits are feather light, and each piece can be worn individually from the sporty shorts to the shirt-dresses to the dustcoats. True to designer Consuelo Castiglione’s style, the clothes take on the personality of the woman who wears them whether they are casual jersey trousers or elegant silk jackets.

Today’s Birthday: Stick to your plans and follow through. Don’t let other people sidetrack you with possibilities that have little substance. Focus on what’s important to you this year if you want to advance emotionally, mentally and financially. Your intuition will steer you in the right direction.
Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
ARIES **** March 21-April 19 Offering your time, skills or service will take you into a new group that has a lot to bring to the table. The favours, proposals and knowledge you will acquire will help to establish your position. TAURUS ** April 20-May 20 Show confidence and stability. Changing your plans because someone else does will not leave you in a strong position. Refuse to let your emotions cause you to act impulsively. GEMINI ***** May 21-June 20 Don’t leave anything to chance or count on someone else to do your job. Put your priorities in order and finish what you start. A relationship with someone may not be as good for you as you thought.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★
CANCER *** June 21-July 22 You can have a new-you in no time if you make alterations to your lifestyle, appearance or even your skills — all bringing beneficial results. You will have a better chance to follow your dreams. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 A relationship is possible but be honest about what you are bringing to the table. Too much talk may give someone you are dealing with a false impression. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY
VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 The most unlikely situation or set of circumstances will turn out to be the most satisfying and profitable. Trying new things will enable you to offer more to people you work with. LIBRA ***** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 You may face a learning curve but it will set you apart from everyone else. Your intellectual input coupled with your unique skill to develop something with substance into something bold. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 You’ll have trouble getting your point across to someone you are close to. Question whether you are being told the truth. Sort through what’s real and don’t be fooled by false impressions. SAGITTARIUS **** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You must stay on course and refrain from making any abrupt changes that will alter the way you live or the lifestyle you lead. Travel for pleasure will ease stress but will cause financial problems.

Don’t make a fuss if you don’t get your way. Someone is trying to save you from making a poor choice. Listen to the advice being given and slow down. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 You’ll be in the mood to conquer and accomplish but don’t be too quick to share your ideas, plans or success. Someone may try to take advantage of you. Lions victory ends long losing streak At last, the Detroit Lions are back in the National Football League winner’s circle. The long-luckless Lions ended a 19-game losing streak that stretched back to 2007 on Sunday with a 19-14 victory over the Washington Redskins. Detroit’s skid equalled the second-longest in NFL history, and the Lions didn’t mind admitting they were relieved not to be heading toward Tampa Bay’s record 26-game losing streak of 1976-77. “We not only got the monkey off our back, we got King Kong off our back,” Lions owner William Clay Ford said. “I’m hoping that this gets us over that hump and gives us a winning attitude.”– AFP

Fashionably late, O’Neal arrived at 11.15pm as fans cheered on the sidewalks and took pictures of the town’s newest superstar, O’Neal has had a good first impression of Cleveland, where he’ll join the NBA’s reigning most valuable player LeBron James. “It’s a nice town,” he said. “The entertainment is already here.” – AFP

owering American John Isner survived a scare from local No 2 Kittipong Wachiramanowong before summoning all his experience to win 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-5) in the opening round of the US$608,500 PTT Thailand Open yesterday. The eighth seed, 2.06 m in height, was down 4-5 with the young Thai serving for the match. But he hung on to outlast his opponent in a gruelling match. The world No 48 from America, who ousted Andy Roddick from the US Open third round, dashed the hopes of the local with his big game, unleashing 21 aces. In earlier action at the Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, the Ratiwatana brothers were dumped out of the doubles in the first round. In today’s first-round action, fan-favourite Marat Safin of Russia will take on Germany’s fifth-seeded Philipp Petzschner in a repeat of last year’s opening round that ended in the German’s favour. The match is due to start at 7pm and will be followed by the encounter between Danai Udomchoke and American Robby Ginepri. Sonchat and Sanchai, doubles champions here two years ago, could not handle the fast and flat shots of Germany’s Benjamin Becker and Argentine Leonardo Mayer, who showed the local twins the exit with a 6-3 2-6 10-3 win. “Becker came up with several return winners in the eighth and found his confidence. That was the turning point in the first set,” said elder brother Sonchat. “In the tie-break it was difficult to come back after we lost

ITALIAN JOB BECKONS On-song Liverpool hope to keep momentum going AFP, Paris
ive-time European champions Liverpool bid to take command of Champions League Group E with a win in Fiorentina tonight despite having laboured to a 1-0 over Debrecen of Hungary at Anfield in their opening match. Rafael Benitez’s side travel to Florence on a high thanks to Saturday’s 6-1 crushing of Hull. With a tough Premier League match coming up against Chelsea next weekend, the Reds are determined to keep their current momentum going, says Fernando Torres, hat-trick hero against Hull. “As a team we are now in a good moment,” the Spaniard, who helped to see off Inter Milan two seasons ago in his club’s last visit to Italy, told Liverpoolfc.tv. “We are still not at our best –

Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, right, has promised fans the Reds will soon be at their best. but we will be soon,” he promised fans who, while they would be delighted if Benitez could deliver another continental title after the 2005 miracle of Istanbul saw them come
back from the dead against AC Milan, are also demanding a first league title since 1990. While Torres fires up Liverpool, Fiorentina, currently fourth in Serie A two points be-

afael Benitez insists Fernando Torres is not for sale at any price after the Liverpool manager revealed he received offers from Premier League clubs for the Spain striker during the close-season. Torres underlined his value to Liverpool as he took his goal tally for the season to eight in seven games with a hat-trick in Saturday’s 6-1 win over Hull at Anfield. The former Atletico Madrid star has established himself as one of the best forwards in Europe since joining Liverpool in 2007 and it is believed Manchester City and Chelsea both enquired about buying him before the start of the season. But Benitez has warned any potential suitors they would be wasting their time trying to prise Torres away from Anfield. “How much is he worth? “Well at least £70 million, you would say,” Benitez said. “I’m not saying he’s the best in the world because he is young and can get better, but of course he is one of the best, and he can still improve if he wants to. “This year we had some agents acting for other English clubs who were
coming to us asking about the price of Torres, with big, big figures, but we said that he’s not for sale. “I would say at this moment in time he is not for sale at any price.”
Saudi prince buying Liverpool? A Saudi prince is negotiating to buy a stake in Liverpool Football Club, his office said, in a deal the media said could be worth as much as £350 million. Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah, a businessman based in Al-Khobar in eastern Saudi Arabia, is currently discussing the deal with the owners of Liverpool, Azhari Kowa, a spokesman for the prince’s Fama Group, said. “Prince Faisal is in London now discussing the purchase,” Kowa said, without elaborating. Al-Riyadh newspaper reported that the prince was negotiating with the heavily-indebted English club’s US owners for a 50-per cent stake. “It is going to be finalised soon. It will cost us £200 to 350 million,” he said, according to Al-Riyadh. Prince Faisal told the paper that Liverpool was saddled with £245 million in debt. Liverpool’s American coowners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have been reported seeking new investment in Liverpool.
hind pace-setters Sampdoria, have an even more combustible talent driving them forward in the shape of Romanian maverick Adrian Mutu. Mutu’s Premier League stint ended in well-documented ignominy when, playing for Chelsea, he tested positive in 2004 for cocaine use and was promptly sacked. After hauling himself back into the limelight at Juventus, following a seven-month ban, Mutu, now 30, moved on to Fiorentina. Mutu has dovetailed well with Alberto Gilardino – but the latter is suspended for today’s encounter, heaping added responsibility on Mutu’s shoulders as the Italians look to bounce back from a first round loss at French side Lyon. Fiorentina last played in the competition in 2000 while their last meeting with English opposition saw them defeat Liverpool’s city rivals Everton on penalties in the
Uefa Cup two seasons ago. La Viola coach Cesare Prandelli will trust that his substitute appearance for Juventus in their 1985 final win over Liverpool will constitute a positive omen. Arsenal, like Liverpool, will similarly chase down a second win in Group H. Now the Gunners meet fellow first-day winners Olympiakos of Greece, coached this term by Brazilian legend Zico. “I would like a fight against Nishioka next. I believe I have a good chance of beating him,” said Poonsawat. Niwat Laosuwannarat, the new champion’s manager, couldn’t confirm whether Poonsawat would be granted his wish. “We have our reward for the hard work we put in dur-

Speculation grows Alonso will join Ferrari Double world champion Fernando Alonso is set to join Ferrari in 2010 with a decision coming as soon as next weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix, reports said yesterday. Speculation has been rife in the Formula One paddock of an impending move and the driver himself said his mind was made up. “I don’t think the podium changes the decision on who I drive for next season,” he said after finishing third for Renault at the Singapore Grand Prix. “I have taken the decision already. Sunday was the ninth time that golf’s two biggest stars finished 1-2 in a tournament. Never have they shared the spotlight, each going home with a trophy that was meaningful in its own way. Mickelson capped off a tumultuous summer at home with a spectacular rally at East Lake, closing with a 5-under 65 to go from four shots behind to a three-shot victory, his first since his wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring. It finished a season in which he won six times and was no worse than second in nine of his 17 tournaments. “I like the way today went,” Mickelson said. “I was two back of him, I beat him by three. He gets the $10 million cheque, and
I get $1 million. I’ve got no problem with that. I just love holding this finally.” He motioned towards the crystal trophy of the Tour Championship, which has not belonged to him since he won in 2000 at East Lake by again rallying in the final round to

It was his third victory of the year, the 37th of his career and it lifted him back to No 2 in the world ranking. “It means a lot to finish the year off on such a good note,” Mickelson said. “We’ve been through a lot, and I’m very proud of my wife and my mum on the fight that they’ve been through. We’re in good shape. Although day-to-day is tough, and it’s not easy for them, we’re fortunate that our long-term outlook is good.” Woods stood on the 18th green with his biggest rival, perturbed by his inability to make putts inside 20 feet, trying to remind himself that he had a remarkable season coming off major knee surgery. “I’m trying to beat Phil, he’s trying to beat me ... we’re all there, and it was just a great leaderboard,” Woods said.
