Teachers on TV Students in remote areas join lessons at one of the country’s top schools

omputers equipped with teaching-aid software are helping students in the remotest parts of the country receive top-quality education, even when their teachers haven’t majored in the lessons being taught.

The electronic Distance Learning Television (eDLTV) project at Hua Hin’s Wang Klaikangwon School under the patronage of His Majesty the King has been satellite-broadcasting its Grade 1-12 class lessons for 14 years to thousands of schools nationwide.

But as the broadcasts don’t

always match lesson times in remote schools, several organisations decided to provide an offline alternative. In 2007, school computers in areas where the Internet and satellite connections are unreliable or unavailable were installed with the new program.

‘An enormous help’ Among them is Wat Pho Tan School, where Suchaya Bumroongkij has been assigned to teach Grade 8 students science even though her master’s is in education.

“I began teaching science 15 years ago but spent all my time reading up on the subject,” says

“It’s like we have two teachers for a class, which helps us to understand stuff better,” says Thanyarat. “Teachers also let us watch repeats of the lessons to catch what we’ve missed.”

Wat Pho Tan is among 33 pilot schools in the province given hard disks installed with the teaching-aid software.

Additionally, computer servers given to 76 schools under HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s IT projects enable students to access the eDLTV lessons on different computers simultaneously.

Avary pleaded guilty in August to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving for the 2008 crash that killed a passenger in Avary’s Mercedes.

Authorities say Avary’s car was traveling at more than 160 kph when it crashed into a telephone pole.

Avary’s wife was ejected from the vehicle and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Avary and Quentin Tarantino share the 1995 Academy Award for writing “Pulp Fiction”.

He also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie “Beowulf”.

The current administrators of Jackson’s estate – attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain – have a probate court’s authority to protect Jackson’s image and likeness and prevent sales of unauthorised merchandise.

The lawsuit claims the Heal the World Foundation had no relationship with Jackson or his family.

Takashi Owada, a 54-yearold unemployed man, demanded money from the 59-year-old female cashier at a convenience store in the northern city of Fukushima on Tuesday, according to a local police spokesman.

Australian students break robot-dance record A group of more than 300 Australian university students grooved their way into the history books on Tuesday, setting a new world record for the largest ever robot dance.

A total of 318 people swung in robotic unison on the lawns of the University of Melbourne to take the record, previously held by a group of 276 students from Britain’s University of Kent.

A few wallflowers were initially overcome by shyness but the fiveminute routine went off without a hitch the second time around, organisers said.

Some were wrapped head to toe in foil while others sported pirate costumes, and a film student captured the event on camera for a robot-dance documentary.

hailand now has a National Bartender to serve its National Drink, the Siam Sunray. Decha Wang-inta, a 25year-old mix master from Chiang Mai, won last week’s Smirnoff Roadhouse Thailand Open in Phuket.

With the Tourism Authority of Thailand watching eagerly, the final round at the Royal Paradise Hotel and Spa had 15 bartenders from across the country competing for points on “flair” and innovation.

They had seven minutes to show their moves and come up with their own variation on the cocktail, and judges including World Flair Champion Tom Dyer and Ultimate Flair Bartending Champion Alex Searle from Britain didn’t miss a trick.

There were a few broken bottles and lots of spilled vodka, but for his part, Decha made it look easy – and tasty.

“I’ve been practising flair for six years, as well as mixology,” he said. “I think it’s a charm most bartenders want. I enjoy tossing bottles around to entertain my customers.”

Shaking and stirring Decha runs his own bar, Symbol, in Chiang Mai and organises free, weekly flair classes for other bartenders. This was his first competition.

Decha stood out here from all the other contestants – he enjoys what he does.”

The Roadhouse Bartender Competition run by Smirnoff, whose vodka is the basis for the Siam Sunray, is aimed at getting Thai bartenders’ attention, explained Kamalas Pattanapaisarn of Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand).

“This is the sort of thing that prods them to take bartending seriously and learn more about mixology. The quality of the drinks and the bartenders’ creativity are still the most important things.”

IT WAS 39 YEARS AGO this month that superstar actor Mitr Chaibuncha plunged to his death while performing a stunt for “Insee Thong” (“Golden Eagle”). He died on October 8, 1970, at Jomtien Beach, after falling from a helicopter. On October 10, the Film Archive remembers Mitr with activities at the Sri Sala Theatre in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom, starting at 2. It’ll be a special commemoration because just last month, director Wisit Sasanatieng started filming a reboot of Mitr’s famous “Insee Dang” (“Red Eagle”) series. fter several years’ absence from films and television, former “bad boy” actor Pete Thongchua is returning in “Suay Samurai” (“Vanquisher”), an action drama by veteran director Manop Udomdej Pete plays Masaru, a Japanese secret agent working with the CIA to track down the movie’s heroine. “It’s a new kind of villain for me with a different style of Pete action from the roles I’ve played before,” says Pete.

But the actor says he’s not afraid of doing his own stunts.

Rather, he’s been enjoying it – riding motorcycles at high speeds, shooting and flying.

“It’s an action movie that blends Thai and other Asian styles. Those who have

watched Manop’s films will know that he always has a good script and that’s enough to make his movies interesting and enjoyable,” he says.

The titular “Suay Samurai” is played by Sophita Sribanchean – a rogue CIA agent being hunted by her former colleagues.

Jacqueline Apithananont, Kessarin Ektawatkul and Saranyoo Wongkrachang also star.

The son of the former actor Phinyo, Pete started his acting career as a youngster, starring in several movies before becoming a teen idol in the late 1980s.

Chaowarat stopped making movies decades ago after losing her sight, but she’s never been far from the public consciousness.

She made a rare appearance on television yesterday for cosmetics brand Mistine, and her likeness, in a 1970svintage beehive hairdo, was used on the posters for this year’s Bangkok International Film Festival.

And at CentralWorld until Saturday, in the first-floor Dazzle zone, there’s an exhibition of Petchara’s awards, colourful movie costumes, formal gowns and swimwear, along with classic posters.

“I don’t want to be on any TV show because then it’s hard to say no to the rest,” Petchara has said, but she may be obliged to give a few interviews for Mistine. Rumour has it that she’s being paid almost as much as Patcharapa “Um” Chaichua to promote the makeup.

Regardless, Petchara will be gracing the cover of Lips magazine’s October edition, looking lovely and more svelte, having just shed two kilograms.

Fans have long heard that apart, eyesight or not, Petchara remains the same sweet, beautiful woman. Now we’re seeing that it’s true.

i Weiwei, one of China’s most controversial artists, may be the son of a poet who was a cultural icon for a new communist China 60 years ago – but he has nothing but scorn for those in power today.

“They’re just so terrible,” he says at his home in Caochangdi, an artists’ colony in the northeast of the capital.

“They carry on as before, but all they’ve done is distance themselves even more from the people and how they think and feel."

In his battle against government propaganda, which was in full swing ahead of today’s celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, the 52year-old deployed his best weapons: art and the Internet.

In addition to opening his first solo exhibition in Beijing this month, Ai has a widely popular (and often censored) blog, on which he writes political commentaries.

“Before coming to power, the authorities spoke about democracy, the end of oneparty rule and the need for freedom of expression,” he

His father, Ai Qing, was a member of the Communist Party and became one of the cultural celebrities of the newly created PRC in 1949. Eight years later he was denounced and sent to a labour camp.

Ai leads a group of volunteers investigating the collapse of schoolhouses in the massive May 2008 earthquake in southwestern Sichuan

province that left more than 87,000 people dead or missing.

Schools bore the brunt of the quake, fuelling angry charges from parents that corruption had led to shoddy construction.

Last month, police prevented Ai from testifying at the trial in the Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu of a fellow quake activist, Tan Zuoren, who was charged with “inciting subversion of state power”.

“Police officers struck me and detained me for 11 hours so that I could not attend the trial,” Ai says.

In the Chinese news media, only his mainstream projects – like his work helping to design the Bird’s Nest stadium for last year’s Olympics – are mentioned.

His new exhibition features a map of the world made of thousands of layers of cotton, symbolising China’s position as the “workshop for the world”.

From October 12 to January 17 he will have a much bigger show in Munich, entitled “So Sorry”.

He describes his latest efforts as “complicated and huge”, exploring a variety of themes, from Adolph Hitler to modern China and the Sichuan earthquake.

avid Engwall’s only companion when he goes jogging in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, on the US east coast, is his dog Beans. That’s because he runs barefoot.

It isn’t that his fiancee is embarrassed to be seen with him. She’s just worried about stepping on a piece of broken glass.

Engwall is part of a minimovement of barefoot runners that’s taken shape over the past decade and appears to be gaining ground.

One driving force behind it is an underground theory that the expensive running shoes everyone is wearing contribute to jogging injuries.

The runners say our feet have become weak because the fancy sneakers with their arch supports and thick cushioning do all the work.

They point to cultures with long traditions of long-distance shoeless running, to the barefoot Ethiopian athlete who won the marathon at the Rome Olympics in 1960, to Zola Budd, the world-class South African runner who trained and competed without shoes.

And many new converts

seem to have been inspired by Christopher McDougall’s “Born to Run”, released in May. At its heart is the true story of the Tarahumara Indians, a tribe isolated in some of Mexico’s most treacherous terrain and whose members can run hundreds of kilometres with ease – and without Nikes.

A herbal extract may lessen symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis for some sufferers

C

ould an ancient Chinese herbal remedy relieve the painful swollen joints of rheumatoid arthritis?

A recent study involved 121 adults with rheumatoid arthri-

tis who had swelling in at least six joints. They were randomly assigned to take an herbal extract made from the peeled root of thunder god vine or the anti-inflammatory drug sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) daily. After nearly six months, about 65 per cent of those taking the herb, compared with 33 per cent of people taking the drug, reported an improvement of at least 20 percent in such symptoms as pain, swelling and use of their joints. Nearly 60 per cent of both groups reported side effects, most often gastrointestinal problems.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, especially those who have not found relief through standard drug treatment could be helped by the herb.

Symptoms, which most often

afflict the wrist and fingers, can come and go. The disease usually starts in adults younger than 55 and can be short-lived or might last a lifetime. It affects women more than men.

About 38 per cent of people taking the herb and 59 per cent of those taking the drug did not complete the study, usually blaming side effects or unsatisfactory results. Herbal treatment was not compared with methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall), the drug used most often in the US for rheumatoid arthritis.

Long-term effects were not tested. Different preparations of the herb might yield different results.

aradorn Srichaphan, who suffered a defeat in his comeback match yesterday, sees a bright future for himself and is expected to return to competitive tennis sometime in January next year.

Paradorn hadn’t played an ATP match since being forced out of the game by a wrist injury in March 2007. Yesterday, he made his return to tennis alongside compatriot Danai Udomchoke and showed glimpses of his talent before fading away with a 2-6 6-1 10-6 loss to Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Peya of Austria in the first round doubles match of the US$608,500 PTT Thailand Open.

The former world No 9, however, was not disappointed by the result, preferring to apply some positive spin after only resuming practice a few days before the tournament. “I hit the

ball well but I have to improve on my fitness. The time out [of ennis] didn’t seem that long to me even though I haven’t played for two and a half years. I was happy with my game and I’m now focusing on returning to [singles] competition,’’ said the 30-year-old, who set January’s Chennai Open as his comeback tournament for the singles.

Paradorn won in India in 2003, one of his five career titles.

The former Thai No 1 has felt no pain on his wrist lately, which prompted him to enter the Thailand Open just a few days before its start.

However, he cautioned that he would be more selective about his schedule now that he’s a married man and running several businesses.

“I can’t travel as much as I did in the past. I have a wife [former Miss Universe Natalie Glebova] and a tennis academy, a restaurant and male-medication products to take care of,’’ said Paradorn, who has made it to the semi-finals of the Thailand Open twice.

Meanwhile, Danai’s Open campaign has come to an end

with losses in both the doubles and singles. He was beaten by American Robby Ginepri in the singles on Tuesday. The 28year-old can now focus on his upcoming marriage to Charinporn Pinidchob.

The couple will receive sacred water from HRH Princess Sirindhorn tomorrow. The wedding is due on November 20.

iverpool manager Rafael Benitez insisted his team will bounce back in Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea following their Champions League defeat to Fiorentina.

Liverpool were virtual spectators in a mesmerising first 45 minutes from their hosts here on Wednesday in which the Merseysiders were fortunate to head into the dressing rooms at half-time with just a two-goal deficit.

Fiorentina’s fluid passing and busy movement had left the Reds chasing shadows as two-goal hero Stevan Jovetic proved unplayable.

And that is the football Benitez wants to see at the weekend in a match Liverpool really can’t afford to lose.

The Spanish oufit ran out easy winners thanks to second-half goals from Abdoulay Konko, Adriano, Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute but that doesn’t tell the full story of a fiery encounter, which saw Nacho Novo score a late consolation for the home side.

Erikkson took centre stage when he denied the home side a clear first-half penalty when Konko tripped Steven Naismith in the area.

Smith claims the referee was in the perfect position to see the incident which should have led to a spot-kick and a red-card for the right-back.

“He was perfectly positioned,” said Smith.

“They are there to make big decisions as they are chosen as the best referees. They are times when you can say that people make errors but that was fairly clear-cut. It was a clear penalty but the problem they have is that they have two decisions to make.

“They also have to send the player off and that makes it awkward for them.

But he opted out of a very clear-cut decision. At Champions League level you expect a better decision for a clear incident. I also didn’t think it was a free-kick for their first goal.

“You can’t say the penalty decision was a turning point overall. But when you play teams like Sevilla you need the complete set of circumstances to go your way and that didn’t happen.”

ith a quarter of an hour left in Tuesday’s Barcelona-Dynamo Kiev Champions League clash, there was an air of unease and uncertainty in the massive Camp Nou. Barca were 1-0 up and playing their usual smooth, silky, attractive passive game – but the second goal would not come.

and Bojan Krkic were missing through injury and Andres Iniesta had been taken off at half-time, after making his first start after an injury-ruined summer.

Xavi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi were looking weary. So the question was: who possessed the spark, imagination and craft to deal the killer blow to welldrilled Dynamo? The emphatic answer came in the 76th minute.

Little Pedro Rodriguez, who had come on for Iniesta, took a short pass from Ibrahimovic, deftly moved the ball on to his left foot close to the penalty spot – and calmly made it 2-0 with a low far-post drive.

The Camp Nou celebrated, not only a classy goal but also the fact that a new star had been found for the sparkling Barca constellation.

Pedro is something of a

throwback to an earlier, more romantic era: a genuine winger with the speed and dribbling skills to get past his man and get to the byeline – or instead cut inside and shoot.

He is nominally left-footed, though almost as strong with his right. Guardiola normally uses him out on the left, particularly when Henry and Iniesta have been missing through injury.

US college gridiron star was recovering in hospital Tuesday from seven hours of emergency surgery following a weight-lifting accident at the University of Southern California.

USC Trojan runningback Stafon Johnson was listed in stable condition yesterday (Bangkok time) after having his throat crushed by a weight bar on Monday.

The 21-year-old American was on his back doing a series of bench presses in the gym when the bar slipped out of his hands and landed on his neck.

Johnson, who leads the Trojans in touchdowns with five, was coughing up blood through his mouth and nose and was rushed to California Hospital Medical Centre for surgery. “This is a very tight

“He took instruction very

well. All this combination and his physical fitness contributed to his outcome.”

Johnson will have to undergo extensive therapy to try and get his speech back.

Carroll said that doctors told him that Johnson would be able to play football again, although, probably not for the Trojans.

Johnson, who has carried the ball 32 times for 157 yards this season, is in his senior, or final, year of US college.

“It was just an absolute accident. It just hit him wrong, and he’s had obvious consequences,” Carroll said. “This guy is an expert lifter. He just lost control of the bar on his first rep of his last set and dropped on him.”

Johnson’s complex surgery involved realigning his larynx.

“None of us really think about what’s going on in your throat,” Carroll said. “But from the things that control speech and breathing and digestion and all of the different issues, everything got affected.”

ormer England captain Bryan Robson is hoping to revive his managerial career by leading Thailand to the 2011 Asian Cup and the London Olympic Games in 2012.

The 52-year-old agreed to take over the national post after compatriot Peter Reid left to become the assistant manager at Premier League club Stoke City last month. Robson, who captained both Manchester United and England as a player, has a signed a four-year contract and becomes the third Briton after Reid and Peter Withe to coach the Thai team.

Though he hasn’t coached since leaving Sheffield United in February 2008, Robson said he perceives no problem in adding the role of national-team manager to his current job as ambassador for Manchester

Utd. “The reason the job was appealing is because I get the best of both worlds,” Robson told Inside United magazine.

“It’s a great opportunity to get back into management, but hopefully I’ll continue to be an asset to United, perhaps even more so now that I’m based in Asia.

Though he enjoyed a stellar playing career, Robson’s record as a coach is mixed. He twice guided Middlesbrough to promotion into the Premier League but has also has been fired as manager by Sheffield United, West Bromwich Albion and Bradford.

He began his playing career in 1974 with West Bromwich Albion. He moved on to Man United in 1981, where he scored 99 goals in 461 appearances and earned the nickname Captain Marvel, before finishing his career at Middlesbrough and taking up coaching.

In other news, beleaguered Argentina coach Diego Maradona is seeking divine intervention as he ponders his side’s chances of reaching the World Cup finals. “The bearded one [God] saved me many times before – and I hope he will do so this time,” Maradona said.

Tevez vows to take revenge on Man Utd The souring of Carlos Tevez’s relationship with Manchester United has been underlined by the Argentinian’s revelation that he will enthusiastically celebrate any goals he scores against them in the future.

Now at Manchester City, Tevez won widespread praise for his discreet acknowledgements of his two goals in Monday night’s 3-1 win over West Ham, the club that brought him to England. “I decided not to celebrate my goals out of respect to West Ham,” Tevez said. “They were my first club in England and, in my heart, part of me will always be a Hammer.
